Next Week’s Vestnik Next week’s Vestnik will include scenes from:

Westfest The 2018-2019 SPJST State Royalty completed their first appearance on Saturday, September 1 at Westfest in West, Texas. King Nash, Queen Grace, Duke Tyson, and Duchess Dakota represented SPJST well at the parade, in the city, and on the fairgrounds at the festival. Great job, State Royalty! In addition to the State Royalty entry in the parade, close to 100 District Three members participated in the parade riding the two SPJST floats. With Czech music and Czech flags waving, our members handed candy to the many parade attendees as the floats traveled through downtown West. A special thanks to District Three for hosting the floats and to District Youth Counselor Mary Steinman; Lodge 183, Arlington Youth Leader Debra Daniel; and Director John Engelke for coordinating the members.

Under new business, Barbara Pavelka will be checking on getting someone else to pick up our trash. The service we are using now has gone up too much in price for us to keep using them. Hopefully, we can get someone else at a cheaper rate. Happy birthday, President Randy Pavelka. He celebrated his birthday on

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth met on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, with 44 members and guests attending. Although it has been such a miserably hot summer, everyone gave up on staying inside and just got out anyway. We ended up with a nice group of lovely ladies and men. President Cathy Simmank announced that we lost one of beloved members: Lorinda Manasco a few days before the meeting. Cathy asked for a moment of silence in her honor. Even though she had just passed away, her daughter and granddaughter Karen and Aleesha Barrett came because they knew how devoted she was to the Circle. There were many hugs, tears and sympathy messages extended to them. Arrangements for Lorinda’s services were scheduled for later in the week. President Cathy then led the attendees in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and welcomed everyone. Next came the inspirational message for the day. Entitled “The Passing Years,” it contained valuable insight into life as we age. Thank you, Lucy Martinez, for bringing the comments and to Janet Basham for sharing them. Business continued with the acceptance of the minutes and update on finances. Marlene Bass announced that a get well card was sent to Sunny Kercho for her recent foot surgery, and a sympathy card was sent Wanda Moree and Christine Apperson on the loss of their brother. Pauline Morbitzer was also mentioned to be in need of our thoughts and prayers. She fell while in Oklahoma for a grandson’s wedding. She has been unable to come home and is in rehab there. Our prayers go out to everyone who needs comfort and strength to get through “tough” times. We think of you daily.

Many members brought school supplies this month, and we will continue to collect them again in September. The children and teachers are counting on us, and we thank you for all that you do. We are also collecting pennies, labels, and soda tops for education. Cake Roulette The Ladies Circle will host the cake roulette for Heritage Day on Saturday, September 15. We need cakes so we are asking our members to please donate a cake or cash if you don’t have time to bake. We’ll go buy or bake one for you. Dance Class In October, we are going to have a dance class! Line dancing, that is. It should be fun trying to figure out if we are to go forward, backward, left, or right. By the end of the session, we WILL be experts. You recon (Texas slang)! Our hostesses for this day were Mary Ann Krivanek, Jeanette Tesar, Joyce Tesar, Marie Keller, Lupe Esparza, and Darlene Tompkins. Our appreciation and thanks go out to each of you for setting up lunch and providing the main entree. Yummy, it was all so good! Now for birthdays! Evelyn Scaff is in her ninth decade and still going strong. Mary Ann Adcock is another one who is a go-getter, and I must say both ladies are examples for us to follow. We need to “keep on keeping on” like they do. Betty Krenek and yours truly also celebrated another year on this earth. By the way, it was wonderful to see Betty attending after going through some of her treat-

ment for cancer. She is also an example for us to follow. Janice Record was absent, and we send out a “Happy Birthday” to her a little late. Jon Durham and the lodge team are busy completing some of the upgrades to the lodge building and preparing for the Czech Heritage Day celebration scheduled for September 15. Put it on your calendar, and come enjoy the festivities. At the end of the day, after the door prizes were given out, Janet Basham shared some funnies with us. Laughter is really good medicine, and we enjoy such foolishness. Last of all, the blessing for lunch was given, and bingo followed. Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire —SPJST—

SPJST State King’s Notebook State Royalty enjoys Westfest by 2018-2019 State King Nash Campbell of Lodge 24, Cyclone

Greetings to all!

This past weekend I was honored to attend my first event as SPJST State King. I along with all the Royalty Court attended Westfest. My day started out at the parade. I had a great time riding in the Corvette and handing out candy with SPJST State Queen Grace Lewis. Next, we went to eat lunch at West Station Roadhouse with many SPJST dignitaries. It was really good! During lunch, District Three Director Mr. John Engelke and his wife Diana surprised Queen Grace, State Duchess Dakota, State Duke Tyson, and me with a $15 gift card to the Westfest booth sponsored by SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood. I got some sausage kolaches and tea. It was so good! After lunch, we all went to the Westfest Fairgrounds, where we handed out fans to lots of appreciative people because it was really hot on Saturday afternoon. State Fraternal Director Frank Horak then introduced myself, Grace, Dakota, and Tyson to the crowd. We received a warm welcome by all. My family and I had a great time at tion. Thanks to the following donors and buyers . . . we appreciate your supporting our youth. Prior to the silent auction, I explained that a District Two Lock-in was in the plans. We are hoping to rent a gym as in the past where youth will be able to have a variety of games such as basketball and volleyball. Rental on the gym has gone up considerably since our last lockin several years ago. The cost to rent the

We are hoping that the silent auction will get us closer to this goal, and the proceeds will go towards the rental. Well, low and behold, District Two Members and Friends, you did it! We thank you for $566 that you donated to our youth fund! Each of you who participated in the silent auction, you are mighty special friends. We thank you for the love and support you show to our youth!

I am sure most of you are aware that Saturday was also opening day of dove season. I was able to make it home in time to go on the evening dove hunt with my dad, my older brother Cole, and some friends. I want to also thank my twin brother Cade (he does not like to dove hunt) for going to our part-time job and doing the work for both of us so that I was able to go dove hunting. I was not all that successful in my hunt - only getting two doves, but it was a great ending to an awesome day! I will celebrate Labor Day, by going to football and band practice! TCGS celebrates 100th anniversary of founding of Czechoslovakia at Sept. 29 event The independence of Czechoslovakia was officially proclaimed in Prague on October 28, 1918, in Smetana Hall of the Municipal House, a physical setting strongly associated with nationalist feeling. The Slovaks officially joined the state two days later in the town of Martin. A temporary constitution was adopted, and Tomáš Masaryk was declared president on November 14, 1918. The Treaty of St. Germain, signed in September 1919, formally recognized the new republic. In support of the year-long 100th year national anniversary celebration of this astounding event in Czech history, promoted by the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C., Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) will be hosting “Celebrating the Centennial of the Founding of Czechoslovakia and the U.S. and Czech Partnership” speaker event on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at Caldwell Civic and Visitor’s Center, 103 Texas Highway 21 W. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the program beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding at 4 p.m. Speaker presentations will center around World War I and the role played by immigrant communities, including Texas Czechs. Pamatnik Cechoslovaku, originally published in Czech in 1920, is a tribute to Texas Czechs who worked together during the World War I years to form a sovereign Czech country. Carolyn Loydasek Holub, who has worked on translating the book into English, will review this upcoming TCGS publication, which is a history of the Czech National Alliance Branches throughout Texas. Texas Czechs banded together under the Czech National Alliance to raise funds, hold lectures by influential speakers and to publicize the plight of the Czech peo-

ple living under the Austrian yoke. Other speakers include Dr. Lila Rakoczy, a noted speaker with the Texas Historical Commission, who will present Texas and the Great War: The Impact on Immigrants and Immigrant Communities; Carroll Brincefield, TCGS President and frequent historical conference speaker, who will discuss The TCGS World War I Memorial Wall and Display Project with the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogical Center in Temple; and Dotty Davis, TCGS Vice President, who will present a video on Sergeant Stubby, World War I Dog, and his role as the official mascot of the United States 102nd Infantry Regiment. A silent auction will be held, and TCGS members are reminded to bring items for the silent auction table. A sales table, featuring TCGS publications and Czech gift items, will also be available. Registration fees paid on/before September 20 are $40 for TCGS members and $45 for non-members. Fees paid after September 20 are $45 for TCGS members and $50 for non-members. Registration at the door is $55 for both members and non-members. The registration fee includes a catered lunch. Registration forms are available on the TCGS website (http://txczgs.org). To register by credit card, go to https://squareup.com/store/TXCZGS/ite m/registration. You may also send a check payable to TCGS and mail it with your registration form to Carolyn Holub, 2741 Falcon Way, Midlothian, Texas 76065. Petra’s methods and studio process also consider the concepts of time and serendipity, and often her previously shown materials transform into new pieces after they become “mentally outlived,” reappearing as new ideas and forms. Her work goes beyond the traditional scope of drawing and painting and creates 3dimensional collages the artist refers to as “knife drawings” or “spatial images.” The act of cutting into the materials con-
