ast week, our Supreme Lodge members were at the Home Office for an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) meeting on Monday, September 10. Officers, directors, and a few Home Office staff members serve on three subcommittees - investment risk, underwriting risk, and operational risk. The subcommittees and the main ERM committee met. Tuesday, September 11 and the morning of Wednesday, September 12 included an investment policy statement review; strategic planning sessions from fraternal, insurance, investments, accounting, and communication departments; and the 2019 preliminary budget review. I learned a lot of good information during the three days. Discussions included terms like IMR, PBR, RBC, IPS, portfolio coupon, and ALM which are frequent terms that our Supreme Lodge members hear. Fraternal life insurance societies are a
regulated industry and have many state and national requirements and regulations. The meeting also included discussing 2019 departmental plans and activities.

Fort Worth Friendship Club The members of Fort Worth Friendship Club met Wednesday, September 5, 2018, for their monthly meeting/social at St. Thomas Parish Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell. Guests were Father Jerry Ward, our guest speaker and brother of Mary Agnes Ward, and Linda Powell, friend to Elizabeth Creamer. Everyone was welcomed. Elizabeth made the comment that she met Linda at church the other day and invited her to our meeting. In their visit, Linda made the comment that Elizabeth sure did look familiar. As it turned out, Elizabeth used to pick her up for school when the children and Linda were small. Linda recalled that one day Elizabeth didn’t pick her up and she ran behind the car until she stopped,

and Elizabeth did remember this. Our guest last month Betty Carter joined the Club this month. So happy to have you. It was nice to have Rose Ann Spann back after a long absence. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Since we were having a speaker, it was voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes from the last meeting. Treasurer Margaret Sears presented the financial report which was approved as presented. Libbie gave a notebook with all the 2018 Vestnik articles about the Club. The president stated that a nominating committee will be appointed in October with elections in November and the new slate assuming duties in January. She asked if anyone would like to serve on the nominating committee or to fill the vacant position of vice president to let her know. Barbara stated the theme for October will be Halloween and colors being black and orange, and if you like, wear a costume. Sunshine Person Darlene Tompkins was missed, but it was reported she sent a get well card to Shirley Martin who had an accident, Mary Schaffer who had surgery, and Betty Krenek who is taking treatment. Get will wishes go out to all of you. We must say more about Shirley who had one of those freakish accidents. She was taking a pitcher of ice water out of the refrigerator when it fell and broke, then a dozen of eggs that were on the door fell then Shirley fell and couldn’t get up. She hit her head and has a concussion; broke three ribs; had cuts on her arm, elbow, and leg - all of which required stitches; and had to have shoulder surgery due to the fall. She spent several days in the hospital. Good thing that her husband was home and was able to get her medical attention. After six weeks, she will need to take therapy. Shirley told

Congratulations to all of you winners! Marilyn Llewellyn stopped by to say hello to everyone on her way to an appointment. She and her husband celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary and were blessed at Mass. Marilyn had a knee replacement recently and is slowly getting back to par. She too has been missed at our meetings. Gary and Debbie Skrasek celebrated their 45th anniversary with a family dinner outing. Mary Agnes Ward gave everyone a memorial card used in the Thanksgiving and celebration of 50 years of pastoral service of her brother, Father Jerome A. Ward, who was her guest and our speaker. President Barbara said she had a call from Mary Agnes that since we didn’t have a speaker scheduled, her brother would be available to speak to us. So Barbara called him, and he asked, “What would you like me to talk on?” She told him she would need to think on that, and it only took her five minutes to return the call. Barbara said she asked him to speak on how and when he became a priest. She said that she is a convert, was raised in the Baptist church, but it never felt right to her. At age 17, she dated a boy who asked her to go to midnight mass at his Catholic church. Barbara said the minute she walked in this church, something came over her, and she knew this is where she belonged. Finally, at age 25, she converted and now loves her faith and church. I asked Barbara if she married this boy and she said, “No.” After she graduated college, she started teaching in Louisiana and he went to law school at LSU. She said their lives
VĚSTNÍK became very different so they drifted apart. Barbara said she married her husband Ron in Louisiana. They had a daughter, and after eight years of marriage, he became suddenly ill and passed away. The daughter is now 34 and is an agriculture teacher in Cypress. This is such a beautiful and yet sad story. Barbara, thanks for sharing this with us. Father Jerry spoke on his life in upstate New York, his life as a priest, and a race car driver. He said his family lived on 45 acres of land. His dad worked at the Navy ship yard in Pennsylvania, and his mother did housework. He went to school in New York and worked at various jobs. He went on a men’s retreat and was given a card - would you be interested in becoming a brother, a priest, and something else (which I don’t recall). Anyway, he filled the card out and checked “priest.” After college and seminary, he served in various parishes, later joining the military. All during this time, he liked going “fast” - whether it was in his little red wagon or bike as a child, and later in his car, he would go as fast as possible. So while serving in the military, along with a friend, he built a race car and started racing. He has raced all over the United States and even abroad. He said after hearing confessions on Saturday, he would go race, and after mass on Sunday morning, he would race. He got the name “Honkin’ Padre.” Everyone thoroughly enjoyed his presentation which also was most entertaining. He is now retired as a priest and from the military and lives here in Fort Worth. Thanks go out to you, Father Jerry! Come again! It was reported that Tracy Horn has sold her house and currently is spending a couple of weeks with her daughter as her son Kenny and his wife are on a cruise. Kathy Thome enjoys taking her communion as they get to visit. As for the last few years, everyone is asked to decorate their own table for our Halloween social. A prize will be given for the best decorated table. Our hostesses for October will be Mary Ann Krivanek and Agnes Saldana with Sherrill Gustavson picking up the chicken. Our sports theme for September was a huge success. We had a table (Father Jerry’s) with the race car theme with a picture of Father Jerry and his race car, a Texas Rangers table with various statues of ball players, Sokol Gymnastics table with Czech clags, and TCU and all sports of football, baseball, and basketball table with popcorn, peanuts, and Cracker Jacks. Dallas Cowboy shirts were the most popular with Sokol shirts being next. Then we had some Texas Rangers shirts, a Take Me Out to the Ball Game shirt, and Texas A&M of Commerce
Wednesday, September 19, 2018 shirt. I wore a TCU shirt loaned to me by Debbie. All had a good time. Hostesses Lupe Esparza and Marie Keller along with Alma Feil picking up the chicken were thanked. They did a super great job. Father Jerry led us in grace. A great luncheon was enjoyed, and games were played. The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 3. Bring your side dish to share and Halloween decorations for your table. So Until, Keep Smiling Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

In Memory of Barbara Rieger Barbara June Rieger of Bryan, Texas, went to join the Lord on September 3, 2018. Visitation and a rosary was recited at the funeral home on Friday, September 7, and a mass of Christian burial was held on Saturday, September 8 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bryan. Interment followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lott. Barbara was born on January 20, 1936, in Lott to Barbara Rieger William and Mary Hammond. She attended Lott High School where she played basketball and volleyball. She was of Baptist faith, but joined the Catholic church when she married Gerald William Rieger at a very young age on June 16, 1953. They were married at Sacred Heart Church in Lott and recently celebrated their 65th anniversary. Gerald served in the Air Force, and she moved with him as he was stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Blytheville, Arkansas, where Barbara worked at Montgomery Ward. When Gerald got out of the Air Force, they moved to Temple and raised their family in the shadow of St. Mary’s Church, where she was a member of several Catholic organizations. They moved to Bryan in 1979 where she continued her work at Montgomery Ward. In Bryan, they were devoted parishioners of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where Barbara belonged to the Women’s Guild, the Adoration Chapel ministry, Communion ministry, as well as Martha and Mary’s Wellness. Barbara and Gerald were very active with Brazos County Senior Citizens Association and members of SPJST Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station where Gerald serves as secretary. Barbara loved sports, especially sports that her children and grandchildren played. She was a big fan of the Aggies and the Astros. She could tell you the earned run average of any of their pitchers. She loved basketball as well, and would often join her sons in the backyard or driveway to shoot some hoops. She also loved a good game of dominoes. There was not one of her children or grandchildren that did not love

pairing up with her in a good game of 42. Besides being devoted to her husband, she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. Her life revolved around family - nothing was more important to her. If one of them was playing a ballgame somewhere, she insisted on being there. None of her children or grandchildren had a bigger fan. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren always knew where to look in the stands
for her. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station. Her parents and her six siblings preceded Barbara in death. She is survived by husband Gerald; children Nancy Ramsey of Pflugerville, Gerry Rieger near Burnet, Ken Rieger of Cypress, and Paul Rieger of Bryan; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews. —SPJST—

Mary loved her family dearly; she would say, “her family was worth more than gold to her.” She was known to make chicken noodle soup for Christmas and her chicken salad sandwiches quite often. She would look forward to her Sunday afternoon drives with her husband Richard checking on their crops and cattle. After Richard, Sr. passed, the kids would continue the Sunday afternoon traditional rides around the ranch. Mary and Richard did everything together; she would even follow behind him, on the combine, in the trail car to Temple. They would also travel all over the state to attend soil conservation conventions. She was a hard worker and worked until she went to the retirement home. Mary was very involved in her community and had memberships in The Mutual Aids Society, SPJST Lodge 9, Snook for more than 75 years, Soil Conservation, and was president of the

Victoria County CHS festival this Sunday Festival Features Czech Accordion, Tarok, and Youth Czech Sing-Along Lessons! When the Victoria Czechs say they are celebrating all things Czech, they mean it! From accordion music to singing, to tarok playing, polka, food, and history, you can find it all at the 32nd Annual Victoria Czech Heritage Festival on Sunday, September 23, 2018, at Victoria Community Center, 2905 East North Street. The festival, sponsored by Victoria County Czech Heritage Society (VCCHS), has consistently drawn about a thousand people each year. Unfortunately, last year, the fest was canceled because of the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey so the Victoria Czechs are ready to party this year! The festival begins promptly at 10 a.m. with five musical events held throughout the day. Shelia Lee, internationally known accordionist, arranger, composer, and teacher from Alto, Texas, will perform first engaging the crowd in traditional Czech entertainment. The Shiner Hobo Band takes over at 11 a.m. and entertains until 1 p.m., followed by the Leo Majek Orchestra from Corpus Christi. Then the Red Ravens will join the Majeks at 4 p.m. for a 30-minute jam session. The Red Ravens continue with good dancing music until 7:30 p.m. And for the first time ever, a fourth band will be added to the festival lineup for your entertainment! It will be held concurrently so you can go back and forth just across the hallway between bands gleaning the various styles of polkas, waltzes, country, and even “Czech-Mex” that makes Texas polka so great! To fulfill this, performing various genres of music for the listening and dancing pleasure of young or matured, Texas Polka News is proud to sponsor the Los Kolaches Band from Shiner performing from 2 to 6

TCGS celebrates 100th anniversary of founding of Czechoslovakia at Sept. 29 event The independence of Czechoslovakia was officially proclaimed in Prague on October 28, 1918, in Smetana Hall of the Municipal House, a physical setting strongly associated with nationalist feeling. The Slovaks officially joined the state two days later in the town of Martin. A temporary constitution was adopted, and Tomáš Masaryk was declared president on November 14, 1918. The Treaty of St. Germain, signed in September 1919, formally recognized the new republic. In support of the year-long 100th year national anniversary celebration of this astounding event in Czech history, promoted by the Czech Embassy in
Washington, D.C., Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) will be hosting “Celebrating the Centennial of the Founding of Czechoslovakia and the U.S. and Czech Partnership” speaker event on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at Caldwell Civic and Visitor’s Center, 103 Texas Highway 21 W. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the program beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding at 4 p.m. Speaker presentations will center around World War I and the role played by immigrant communities, including Texas Czechs. Pamatnik Cechoslovaku, originally published in Czech in 1920, is a tribute to Texas Czechs who worked together during the World War I years to form a sovereign Czech country. Carolyn Loydasek Holub, who has worked on translating the book into English, will review this upcoming TCGS publication, which is a history of the Czech National Alliance Branches throughout Texas. Texas Czechs banded together under the Czech National Alliance to raise funds, hold lectures by influential speakers and to publicize the plight of the Czech people living under the Austrian yoke. Other speakers include Dr. Lila Rakoczy, a noted speaker with the Texas Historical Commission, who will present Texas and the Great War: The Impact on Immigrants and Immigrant Communities; Carroll Brincefield, TCGS President and frequent historical conference speaker, who will discuss The TCGS World War I Memorial Wall and Display Project with the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogical Center in Temple; and Dotty Davis, TCGS Vice President, who will present a video on Sergeant Stubby, World War I Dog, and his role as the official mascot of the United States 102nd Infantry Regiment. He sings with an authority that is guided by compassion, by an unblinking eye for what is beautiful within what is not.” (Sherrod Santos in The New York Times Book Review) “A remarkable achievement, a heady ride, wise and knowing.” (Patricia Hampl) “Richard Katrovas is a fine writer. . . . He makes the [reader] feel gratitude, and, in addition to illumination, friendship.” (James Dickey) “Katrovas is masterful, part Mark Twain, part Henry Miller. He is ferocious, tender, original.” (Gerald Stern) About the Author Richard Katrovas is the author of 15 books of prose and poetry. He’s the founding director of the 25-year-old Prague Summer Program. He taught for 20 years at the University of New Orleans, and for the past 15 at Western Michigan University.
