Most impressive is what the Czech people have accomplished, in all aspects of their lives and the country’s wellbeing, in less than 30 years especially considering the wreckage that was left after eight years of Hitler and 40 years of Stalin and the Soviet Union.

The experience was truly amazing. Everyone on the trip wanted an Uncle Laddie and Aunt Helen Gajdica! And, one last note . . . always remember: Bring the pivo before the cheesecake, prosim. —SPJST—

Heat the milk. Dissolve yeast in 2 Tablespoons of the milk. Place flour in a bowl; add sugar and half the remaining milk along with the slightly beaten egg, Mix well. Add the mixture and melted butter that is cooled; mix well. Slowly add enough milk so the dough is fairly stiff. Beat until smooth. Cover. Let rest for about 30 minutes.

Cut dough into 4 pieces. Roll 1 piece out to about 1/4 inch thick on a floured pastry cloth. A good 4-inch square will make 4 dumplins, 2x2”. Place plum in center and moisten edge of dough; seal. Fill a deep pot with a lid with at least 3 inches of water and bring to a simmer. Cook 8 minutes then turn over and cook for 7 minutes more, always with the fitted lid. Top with: Melt 1 stick of good butter in a heavy skillet. Add enough cream of wheat and cook to a golden brown - not too dark. Add enough sugar to your taste. Place a spoonful over your warm dumplin and enjoy. —SPJST— WANTED: Your Recipes! = = = Fraternal News = = = State Fraternal Director shares October updates Fall Fun Days Underway District fall fun days are underway. Remember, these are fun events. Any business should be limited to emergency issues only. What a great time to meet fellow members in your district, renew old acquaintances, and make new ones! Dates for the fall fun days are:

800-727-7578 or sandrad@spjst.com. For more information about scholarships, contact Sandra Dubcak at 800.727.7578 or email Sandra at sandrad@spjst.com. You can also download the scholarship applications at www.spjst.org. Click on Benefits, Scholarships, then SPJST Scholarship/Grant Program. You will then find the pdf files to download.

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive Everyone spread the word! October 1 starts the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive to benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive will run through March 31, 2019.

Officer Elections The end of another year is rapidly approaching. Many lodges have had a very productive and successful year. This is the time of year when lodges across the state will be electing leaders for the coming year. Has your lodge moved forward? Has your lodge met all of its goals? Has your lodge completed all of its projects planned for the year in your community? Has your lodge set goals for 2019? Keeping this in mind may help you make choices on who you will elect to keep your lodge moving forward in the coming year. It is the duty of all members to provide the leaders of their lodge with suggestions, ideas, and assistance. When asked to assist with activities throughout the year, please help your lodge officers. Fraternalism works best when every member is involved in the process. While lodges are electing new officers, this would also be an excellent time to check the back pages of the Vestnik for your meeting date and time. Many lodges are not listed. This would be an excellent time to get the information listed. If any of this information has changed, please contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at 800727-7578 and have her update your lodge information.

2019 Scholarship Applications 2019 scholarship applications are now available and must be submitted to the Fraternal Department by February 1, 2019. Please contact Sandra Dubcak at

This event has been picking up steam in recent years and is a wonderful venue for families to enjoy. This year the date is set for Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20 at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. Entertainment will be music, antique farm equipment, train rides for kids, arts and crafts, and much more. This will take place in the Czech Village around the museum. Celebrating Heritage Day In years’ past, regarding Czech Heritage Month, members have traveled to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas to partake in Heritage Day. This year, Celebrating Heritage Day will take place Sunday, October 28 at Dallas Sokol, located at 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas. Due to cost of tickets for the performers, the Heritage Day partnership had to make new arrangements for the festivities. What better place than Dallas Sokol! There will be food, refreshments, dancers, parade of kroj, performances, Czech band, and dancing. More information about the event can be found in the lodge and Czech sections of this week’s Vestnik. This will be a key agenda item at the meeting of Lodge 28, East Bernard to be held on Sunday, October 28 at 2 p.m. at Wharton County Library, located at 746 Clubside Drive in East Bernard. In order to vote on this proposed transaction, it will be necessary for you to be in attendance at the meeting. The Supreme Lodge operational procedures does not allow absentee voting or voting by proxy. In the event the members vote to sell or not sell, this would be an opportune time to discuss the future of Lodge 28 in East Bernard. Thank you for your attention. Watch for Meteor Showers in October In the month of October there will be two meteor showers you can view in the night sky. They are the Draconid and Orionid meteor showers. Draconid Meteor Shower The Draconids owe their name to the constellation Draco the Dragon, and are created when the Earth passes through the dust debris left by comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. The comet takes about 6.6 years to make a single revolution around the Sun. You don't need any special equipment or a lot of skills to view a meteor shower. All you really need is a clear sky and lots of patience. The following tips can help maximize your shooting star viewing experience. Peak time to view the Draconid meteor shower is October 7 - 10 in the northern sky. Orionid Meteor Shower Orionid meteor shower is named after Orion, because the meteors seem to emerge or radiate from the same area in the sky as the Orion constellation. The Orionid meteor shower is the second meteor shower created by Comet Halley. The Eta Aquarids in May is the other meteor shower created by debris left by Comet Halley. Halley takes around 76 years to make a complete revolution around the Sun. It will next be visible from Earth in 2061. Peak time to view the Orionid meteor shower is October 21 - 22 in the Southeast sky. Source: https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/meteor-shower/draconid.html

Písek Stone Bridge This Gothic bridge may not be the most famous bridge in the Czech Republic, but the town of Písek prides itself with the oldest stone bridge in Bohemia. It has seven arches and is decorated with replicas of Baroque statues, St. John of Nepomuk with Angels, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Anne, and the Calvary. Built in 1270 at the reign of Přemysl Otakar II, Písek Stone Bridge provides a crossing over the river Otava, southward from Prague. During Charles IV’s reign, the Golden Route connecting the Czech lands with Bavaria and Upper Austria led across the bridge. Over the centuries, pack animals carried salt, expensive fabrics, southern fruits, wine, and spices to Bohemia, while taking cereals, malt, honey, lard, and fish to Bavaria. Name three other old bridges in the Czech Republic. 1.____________________________ 2.____________________________ 3.____________________________ https://www.tyrkys.cz/page/the-oldest-bridges-in-the-czech-republic.html https://www.jiznicechy.cz/en/destinations/22-stone-bridge https://bohemia-trip.cz/en/81-trip-chateau-hluboka-holasovice-ceskykrumlov-unesco/
