SPJST, Texans join Czechs in celebrating 100 years of independence on October 28 by Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek On October 28, 1918, the sovereign state of Czechoslovakia was established when the National Committee in Prague proclaimed independence from the Austrian Hapsburg emperors. The Czechs were supported in this move by President Woodrow Wilson, who sent a note to the Austro-Hungarian foreign minister urging that the various nationalities of the empire be allowed to determine their own political future. And thus, the First Republic came into being under the presidency of the much celebrated philosopher and statesman Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. Despite a storied hundred years that included occupation by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, and the separation of the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993, Czech National Day — observed annually on October 28 — remains a day of celebration in the Czech Republic. In addition to observing the 100th anniversary of independence from the Aus-

We shall always be a small minority in the world, but, when a small nation

accomplishes something with its limited means, what it achieves has an immense and exceptional value . . . It is a deliberate and discerning love of a nation that appeals to me, not the indiscriminate love that assumes everything to be right because it bears a national label. Love of one's own nation should not entail non-love of other nations. Institutions by themselves are not enough. —Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk

tro-Hungarian Empire, 2018 is the 50th anniversary of “Prague Spring,” the period of political liberalization in Czechoslovakia which took place in 1968 during the era of its domination by the Soviet Union after World War II. Prague Spring appealed to democratic values of freedom, tolerance and sovereignty and rejected the dictates of Communism, planting the seeds for the ‘‘Velvet Revolution’’ in 1989 which resulted in the downfall of the Communist regime. The Czech Republic is also observing

25 years as a sovereign nation in 2018 following the peaceful separation of the Czech Republic and Slovakia and the formation of the new Czech state on January 1, 1993. As an emerging nation on the world stage, one of the early objectives of the Czech Republic’s foreign policy was to join the Euro-Atlantic security community and become a full NATO member. This goal was realized when the Czech Republic joined NATO on March 12, 1999. Correspondingly, the Czech Republic, which has long shared European civilization and cultural values, became a member of the European Union on May 1, 2004. In 2018, relations between the Czech Republic and the United States of America are excellent. The long friendship of the United States and the Czech Republic is cemented by the millions of Americans Continued on Page 20.

Decorum at SPJST Lodge Meetings

Meetings are an important part of SPJST’s business and social planning. In conducting the business of our Society, it’s important to show respect — to each other and to the fraternal ideals we seek to advance. The following is a suggested guideline to some of the things we can do to ensure that our lodge meetings provide an inviting platform for members to exchange their views and achieve solutions benefitting the lodge and organization.

• Come to the meeting with a positive attitude. • Treat members with respect before, during and after the lodge meeting. • Be prompt in arriving to the meeting and turn cell phones off or to vibrate. • If you must take urgent calls on the cell phone, please take your conversation outside. • Maintain your dignity and present yourself in a positive manner. • Have a strong agenda. This is part of being prepared. The President should have a good, strong agenda so that he or she can stay on track. If discussion gets off tracks, it is up to the President to get back on track. • Talk one at a time, waiting to be recognized by the President. • Limit side conversations. • Be patient when listening to others speak and do not interrupt them. • Members need to stay on the topic being discussed. • When a topic or agenda item has been discussed fully, do not bring the same subject back up. • Don't make threats or rude comments. • Address any concerns about the discussion or the meeting with the President. It is the President’s job to keep the meeting on course and to keep order. • Be respectful of other people's ideas or situations when they talk. • A disruptive and/or intoxicated member has to be handled gently to avoid more disruption. A good way to deal with this to avoid the escalation of such behavior is for a couple of members to speak with the offending person privately and let him or her know that the behavior is unacceptable, since it is disrupting the meeting. If this proves to be ineffective, it may be necessary for the offended party(ies) to file a grievance as outlined in the SPJST By-Laws. • The lodge shall comply with all local, county or state laws governing smoking. If smoking is lawful, the lodge shall adopt rules and regulations regarding smoking during meetings and social functions. The rules and regulations governing smoking shall be considerate of all members and provide smoke free areas. It is recommended that smoking be prohibited during all meal functions.

Lodge 28, East Bernard to discuss selling property at Oct. 28 meeting Dear Members of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard, The officers and members attending Lodge 28 meetings in recent months have discussed selling the property that is owned by Lodge 28, East Bernard. The dimensions of the property are 50 feet wide and 100 feet deep — or 0.1148 acre. The lot is located on Leveridge Street. There is a 288 square-foot portable building on the property that would also be sold with the property. The lot has not been utilized by the lodge in numerous years and property maintenance is the reason for wanting to sell the property. The property would be listed for sale necessitating sealed bids from interested entities. In accordance with the Supreme Lodge operational procedures, a meeting will be held to discuss, consider, and vote on the proposed sale. This will be a key agenda item at the meeting of Lodge 28, East Bernard to be held on Sunday, October 28 at 2 p.m. at Wharton County Library, located at 746 Clubside Drive in East Bernard. In order to vote on this proposed transaction, it will be necessary for you to be in attendance at the meeting. The Supreme Lodge operational procedures does not allow absentee voting or voting by proxy. In the event the members vote to sell or not sell, this would be an opportune time to discuss the future of Lodge 28 in East Bernard. Thank you for your attention. In Memory of Henry Repka Henry Joe Repka, 76, of Hallettsville, Texas, son of Martha and Herman Repka, was born on April 29, 1942. He passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 21, 2018. A lifelong musician, Henry’s love and passion for music began at an early age. He played alto saxophone in the Hallettsville Sacred Heart School band and played with several local bands during his high Henry Repka school years and beyond. In 1991, he was awarded “Male Vocalist of the Year” by Texas Polka Music Association and was recognized for “Song of the Year” and “Album of the Year.” Treasured friendships were formed as he enjoyed a musical career that spanned over 60 years. While living in Aldine, a suburb of Houston, he was affectionately known as the “dog man of Hollyvale” because of his love and companionship with his dogs. Over the years. he loved and nurtured many rescued dogs that became his traveling buddies when commuting between Houston or Sealy and Hallettsville. He loved nature and had compassion for all animals, not wanting harm to come to any. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. Texas Czech Genealogical Society introduces 2018 Christmas Ornaments associated with a legend, symbol or tradition With 2018 winding down, and

with the Christmas season quickly approaching, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) is pleased to announce its 2018 selection of ornaments associated with a legend, a tradition, or a symbol. This is our sixth year to offer ornaments of this nature, and we trust that this offering will be as exciting for our customers as those offered in the past. Orders may be placed for shipment beginning on October 24 by calling Nancy Machu at 512-218-1559 or sending an email to nbmachu@gmail.com. Shipping charges will apply, based on quantity ordered. Please call for charges. Ornaments may also be purchased in our gift shop, located in the lower level of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street, Temple, Texas. This week, we highlight the following: The Star of Bethlehem TSL-40 - $15 Because of its prominence in the nativity story, the star of Bethlehem is one of the most powerful symbols of Christianity. It was the great light of a special star that led the wise men to the stable in Bethlehem where the Christ Child lay. For many nations in the

world, the Christian Christmas holiday begins with the appearance of the first star on Christmas Eve. The star symbolizes the hope for peace and good fortune and demonstrates the fact that people in every corner of the world, regardless of nationality, share the same universe. The Symbol of the Rainbow TSL-50 - $9 After the Great Flood, we read in the Old Testament (Genesis 9:6): “I solemnly promise you and your children and the animals you brought with you . . . that I will never again send another flood to destroy the earth.” He placed a rainbow in the clouds as a sign of this promise. Therefore, the rainbow has become a symbol of reconciliation between God and man; the rainbow has been called by some the “Gateway to Heaven.” The rainbow ornament makes a great gift of inspiration and encouragement. The Symbol of the Owl TSL-42 - $9 This whimsical owl was masterfully crafted in the Czech Republic. Owls have been credited with

19

providing forewarning and good counsel and are associated with wisdom, virtue, and prophecy. There are numerous species of owls, and each seems to have its own legends and lore. The owl lives in darkness and his visual ability to see through the darkness has been compared to the light of Christ dissolving the darkness of the world. Legend of the Christmas Stocking TSL 54 - $11 According to legend, a father was unable to provide his three daughters with a dowry. Hearing of their misfortune and wishing to help, St. Nicholas dropped three bags of gold coins down the chimney. The coins fell into each of the daughters’ stockings, which were hanging by the fire to dry, providing a sufficient dowry. Since then, stockings hung by the fireplace are a traditional part of Christmas gift giving. An empty stocking or sockshaped bag was originally used, but today, decorated Christmas stockings are hung over the fireplace so that Santa can fill them with small toys, candy, fruit, or other gifts. October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas! Texas Czech Heritage Month is October 1 through 31. All Czech Texans are encouraged to participate in this monthlong commemoration. As we celebrate, we remember the past and our ancestors who were proud enough to stand up for what they believed in and loved. The purpose of Texas Czech Heritage Month is to preserve and promote the many contribu- Willa Mae Cervenka tions made by Czech immigrants and Czech Texans, and to honor our ancestors. The Legislature of Texas passed a resolution, signed by then-Texas Governor George W. Bush, designating the month of October to be celebrated annually as “Texas Czech Heritage Month.” The idea for the resolution was introduced by Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka of La Grange, Texas. The TravisWilliamson Czech Heritage Society, during the presidency of the late Dr. Dorothy Bohac, was instrumental in having the resolution passed. The month of October was chosen because of its historical significance Czechoslovakian Independence was proclaimed on October 28, 1918.

This special month of October of each year gives us an opportunity to remember and commemorate our rich Czech heritage. Here are a few ideas: *
