hanks to all of our readers who are participating in the Czech Heritage Month activities that we have featured in the past three Věstníks. We have received many entries and will be drawing 12 lucky names on October 24 who will receive Czech-themed prizes. Winners will be announced in next week’s Věstník. Best wishes to all participants! I visited my parents one evening last week. I brought in the mail which included the October 17 Věstník. My parents usually have a race to see who gets their hands on the Věstník first! This time, my 89year-old dad was the winner! As he sat in his comfy rocking chair, he immediately spotted the picture of the Czech couple dressed in kroj on the back page. While I was doing a few of their household chores, he commented several times about the picture to be colored. I pulled out the box of crayons and set them on the table. Dad made his way over to the table and started his coloring masterpiece! He enjoyed the project, and from the comments that we are receiving from many of our dear readers, they, too, are enjoying the activities. We will certainly work to include more of these fun activities in future Věstníks! S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Needs Your Assistance S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living in Taylor is in need of volunteers to assist with activities at its skilled nursing home in
Taylor. Activity Director Tara Schlesinger is asking for people to come and play dominoes, do puzzles, color, etc. on Saturdays or during the week for a couple of hours. Supreme Lodge Continued from Page 1. * Junior campers are encouraged to attend their designated district camp session; however, they may attend either session. “Parents and guardians are encouraged to allow their sons and daughters to participate in SPJST’s summer camp program,” says Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. “It’s about having fun, and it’s about learning life skills. Camp Kubena provides an ideal setting for such an adventure.” The mission of Camp Kubena is to provide a caring environment in which children, youth, and adults can have a meaningful educational experience in the outdoors. SPJST Teen Camp will enable campers to participate in SPJST’s longstanding Leader-in-Training program which is designed to promote responsibility and leadership. In 2019, teens between the ages of 13 and entering high school senior will have the opportunity to apply to serve in an LIT position at one of the two junior camp sessions. The deadline to apply to the LIT program is Thursday, February 28, 2019. Applications to serve as a 2019 LIT are expected to be posted on the SPJST website in November. “SPJST recognizes the opportunity that it has to make a positive difference in the lives of its young people by committing itself through fraternal programming that develops a greater appreciation, understanding, and involvement with the natural world,” says President Vanicek. “The board is pleased with the progress that has been made at Camp Kubena,” he says. Correspondingly, Camp Director Jeb Lapeyrolerie received a vote of confidence from the Supreme
3
Lodge for the efforts that were being made to field a meaningful camp experience and run the camp in a professional manner. In response, Mr. Lapeyrolerie gave high marks to SPJST chaperones and campers for their efforts to make the 2018 SPJST Summer Camp program a success. A big part of that success comes from the support that the camp program receives from SPJST members, including its adult chaperones, youth leaders, DYCs, and their assistants.
Camp Chaperone Training Three dates have been designated in 2019 for chaperone training. These are Saturday, April 6 at 1 p.m. at Camp Kubena; Sunday, April 28 at 12 noon at SPJST Home Office in Temple; and Sunday, May 5 at 1 p.m. in the Dallas/Fort Worth area (location to be announced). Prospective chaperones will have the opportunity to participate in the training session that is closest and/or most convenient.
Youth Leaders Workshop The annual SPJST Youth Leaders Workshop will be a one-day program and will be held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple on Saturday, March 23, 2019. All youth clubs are encouraged to send at least one representative to this workshop. Lodges that do not have an active youth club may also wish to send a representative to the meeting to learn about the many facets of the SPJST Youth Program.
Changing Times “Each generation tends to look at the world and claim that things aren’t as they used to be,” says President Vanicek. “Within our generation, the bar has been dramatically raised on the camping industry. Increased regulation, insurance, and liability demands all contribute to the challenge of fielding a camping program.”

SPJST is working diligently to ensure that we are meeting those challenges. On a related note, many of the time-honored SPJST Summer Camp activities remain from decades past. These include cookouts, evenings around the campfire, hiking, hayrides, and team games to bolster camaraderie. There have also been some changes. SPJST has ramped up its camping program and put a premium on fielding a well-trained and motivated camping staff, engaging programming and team building activities to demonstrate to parents — and to the government — that SPJST is running a solid program in a way that meets all health code and safety regulations. “To that end, we expect that SPJST’s Camp Kubena will soon be receiving recognition as an American Camping Association (ACA) certified camp,” says President Vanicek. “ACA certification represents a mark of excellence that will enable Camp Kubena to demonstrate that key standards of the camp’s operation — partic-
VĚSTNÍK
ularly those items relating to program quality and the health and safety of the campers — are being protected.” The Supreme Lodge also voted in its October meeting to engage the services of a camp professional to assist the Society in establishing short-, intermediate-, and longterm objectives for Camp Kubena. “SPJST owns the camp now,” says President Vanicek. “It’s a wonderful op-
portunity and one that requires disciplined management and fiscal responsibility. It’s also about running a camp that holds firm to SPJST’s mission and contributes to the personal and social growth of our young people.”
Camp Eligibility If your child has completed kindergarten, is a current youth club member,
and has made seven out of 12 meetings, he or she will be eligible to attend camp at no charge. Youth who attend lodges with no youth club can attend seven adult meetings and qualify to attend camp at no charge. The lodge secretary will need to provide the SPJST Home Office with copies of the membership roster of each meeting the youth attended. Youth who have not made at least seven meetings may attend camp at the prorated rate of $35 per meeting missed. The rate for attending camp with no meeting credits was $250 for the 2018 camping year. Youth can make up a meeting by attending another local youth club. All campers must submit an online application to the State Fraternal Director between November 30 and May 26, 2019. The application will be available in late November on the spjst.org website. Be watching the Věstník and SPJST Facebook page for updates! —SPJST—

State Duke enjoys lock-in activities I attended the District Two Lock-In at the Wilson Recreation Center in Temple. It was pretty cool because there was a lot to do. They had a video game room, air hockey, ping-pong, volleyball, and basketball. I even got to bring a friend to hang out with. We had a great time! Texas Czech Genealogical Society introduces 2018 Christmas Ornaments associated with a legend, symbol or tradition In week two, the Texas Czech
Genealogical Society introduces four more of its 2018 collection of Legend, Symbol and Tradition ornaments. The ornaments are available in the TCGS Gift Shop, located in the lower level of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street, Temple, Texas, or by contacting Nancy Machu at nbmachu@gmail.com or calling 512218-1559. The Star of Bethlehem TSL-56- $18 This exquisite glass ornament, created in a relief design, tells the Christmas story. It depicts the little town of Bethlehem, the stable that sheltered the Holy family as they marveled at their tiny baby, the visiting shepherds, and the three wise men who came from afar.
Mushroom TSL-38- $7 Crafted of glass in the Czech Republic, the mushroom is a symbol of good luck. Mushrooms provide health
13
and strength. At a traditional Czech Christmas Eve dinner, mushroom soup would most likely be served. Like garlic, mushrooms play an important role in Czech lives; in fact, mushroom hunting is considered by some to be the national sport of the Czech Republic. Entire families are known to wake at dawn, get their wicker baskets, and head for the forest to find the treasured delicacies. In many cultures, finding a mushroom in the woods is considered to be a symbol of good luck and a harbinger of prosperity. Mushroom ornaments are displayed on Christmas trees in reverence for nature and in hope of good luck in the New Year. Four-Leaf Clover TSL-46 - $7 The four-leaf clover is an age-old symbol of good fortune and one’s chances of finding one are 1:10,000. The four leaves symbolize hope, faith, love, and luck. Possessing
a four-leaf clover is especially lucky if the clover is received as a gift. A Christian legend tells the story that Eve took a four-leaf clover with her when she was expelled from Paradise. Anyone lucky enough to be in possession of a four leaf clovers has, consequently, a piece of the blessed Paradise. Elephant TSL-32 - $13 The beautiful elephant with her baby calf by her side reminds us of the well-known phrase, “an elephant never forgets.” They are known for their alleged intelligence, remarkable memory, and the fact that they live long lives. The elephant is also a symbol of gentleness and strength. Elephants are amazingly sensitive to their group and family members, and they can be observed helping each other when hurt, or by mourning the loss of their loved ones.
