SPJST Mourns Loss of District Four Director Billy Rollwitz SPJST District Four Director William (Billy) Joseph Rollwitz of Rowena, Texas, passed away Friday, October 19, 2018. He was 80 years of age. Brother Rollwitz was State Field Representative for District Four for five and one-half years from 2001 to 2005. He then succeeded the late Stanley Broz serving on the SPJST Supreme Lodge for the past 13 years as District Four Director since May 2005. He had 18 years of service to the SPJST Home Office. Brother Rollwitz also served on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Board for 25 years, and he held the position of treasurer for many of those years. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena. Billy was born January 24, 1938, to Raymond and Isabella (Moeller) Rollwitz in San Angelo and lived in Rowena all his life. He married his high school sweetheart, Sylvia Franke Rollwitz, on May 10, 1960, in Rowena, and they shared 58 years of marriage. He started working at Middleton Chevrolet during high school where he learned his mechanic skills. He then owned and operated a welding and tractor mechanic shop in Rowena. Billy later went on to farming full time but then returned to what he loved the most and opened a welding shop in Rowena where he built hay buggies and utility trailers. He loved nothing better than going to farm equipment sales and finding all the best deals. Billy organized the Rowena Farm Equipment Sale every spring for the past 30-plus years. Billy served in the United States Army and Reserves. He was a member of Post 8 American Legion in Ballinger
serving as Post Commander, District Zone Commander, District Finance Officer, and District 21 Commander. Billy was instrumental in getting the Runnels County Veterans Memorial Monument erected in Ballinger, which he was very proud of. He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus. As District Four Director, he represented SPJST in many ways by attending lodge and district functions and meetings throughout the district and state. He participated in many community services, including giving presentations at events. Billy was preceded in death by his parents; infant son Richard; sister Dorothy Capes; brother Curtis Rollwitz; father-in-law Tony and mother-in-law Leona Franke; sisters-in-law Rose Marie Franke and Floy Franke; and
brothers-in-law Leon Franke and Duane Weller. Survivors include his wife Sylvia; daughters Jackie (Jerry) Pospichal of Rowena and Donna (Curtis) Kalina and Connie (Mac) Dodson, both of Miles; son Brennan (Lee Ann) Rollwitz of Rowena; grandchildren Laura Pospichal, Matthew (Britney) Kalina, Jacob (Shelby) Kalina, Clint Dodson, Nathanial (Brittany) Gallion, Anthony (Kim) Rollwitz, Richard Rollwitz, Kaycee Rollwitz, Joseph Pospichal, and Ana Fuentes; step-grandchildren Theresa Pospichal and Jason Pospichal; six great-grandchildren; brother Roy (Sandra) Rollwitz; sister Pauline Rollwitz; sisters-in-law Carolyn Rollwitz and Eileen Weller; brothers-in-law Ross Capes, Wilfred Franke, and Harold (Dolores) Franke; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A rosary service was at 6 p.m. Monday, October 22 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena. Mass of Christian burial was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 23 at St. Joseph with Father Ariel Lagunilla and Deacon Alan Pelzel celebrating. Burial followed at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons Matthew Kalina, Clint Dodson, Anthony Rollwitz, Jacob Kalina, Nathanial Gallion, Richard Rollwitz, and Joseph Pospichal. Honorary pallbearers were SPJST Staff and American Legion representatives. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or a favorite charity. A special memorial tribute to Billy is included on pages 4 to 6 of this week’s Vestnik. —SPJST—

hat a very sad time it was on Friday afternoon, October 19, 2018, when we learned that District Four Director Billy Rollwitz suddenly passed away. Brother Billy was just at the Home Office for the Supreme Lodge meeting earlier in the week on Tuesday and Wednesday. I always enjoyed talking with Billy. He was a good man filled with integrity and common sense. I especially enjoyed our visits in District Four at Youth Achievement Days and lodge events. It seems like that’s when we shared some real heart-to-heart talks. Billy loved SPJST, his country, and his tractors/farm equipment collection. But even more, he loved his precious wife Sylvia and their beautiful family. A special memorial tribute appears on pages 4 to 6 of this week’s Věstník. We extend sincere sympathy to Billy’s wife Sylvia and their family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers, and may God bless and comfort them during this very difficult time. And the winners are . . . Thanks to all members who submitted entries in this year’s Věstník Czech Heritage Month activities that appeared in the October 3, 10, and 17 issues. We received hundreds of entries, and 12 names were drawn. These lucky winners will receive Czech-themed prizes. A tribute in honor of District Four Director Billy Rollwitz January 24, 1938 - October 19, 2018
I’m Free
William “Billy” Joseph Rollwitz
Don’t grieve for me for now I’m free, I’m following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard Him call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day to laugh, to love, to work, or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way; I found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy a friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah, yes, these things I, too, will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow; I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full, I’ve savored much good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me; God wanted me now. He set me free.

A tribute in honor of District Four Director Billy Rollwitz January 24, 1938 - October 19, 2018 † You always knew where Billy stood on any issue. When I was elected District Two Director in 2012, Billy treated me as if I had been on the board for years. He always respected people even if they did not agree with him. At the last board meeting which was only two days before he passed, I tried to beat him to his usual, “Mr. Chairman, I move to adjourn this meeting.” I made the motion but was told we still had another issue to address. After the discussion, I let Billy adjourn the meeting, not knowing it would be his last motion. Now I feel very thankful that we had that last issue that needed attention. I want to thank Billy not only for being a very important member of the Supreme Lodge but also for being my great friend. Rest in peace, my friend. —Jesse Pospisil District Two Director
† I will miss Billy very much. Billy
and I were very close friends. We talked on the phone at least once a week discussing SPJST or his farm equipment shop and how he would go out to farms to buy old equipment. We would talk about the weather and crops and the lack of rain in the San Angelo area. At board meetings in Temple, we would ride together to supper most of the time. We talked about what happened at the meeting that day and how things could be corrected the next day. Billy stood up to his convictions and would not back down. I admired him for that. He was very dedicated to SPJST. He did not like to be led down the wrong path. Sometimes it seemed like we could read each other’s minds at the meetings. I will miss him very much. What a friend to have. “What’s next?” —Bob Bayer District Seven Director
† Billy and I were State Field Representatives together from 2001 to 2005 and Supreme Lodge Directors from 2012 to 2018. As I have known and served with Brother Billy for several years, I realize that he believed in SPJST and worked hard for his district areas and the membership of SPJST. He has been like a big brother to me, and he will sincerely be missed. —Karen Kaspar District Six Director
† I will miss Billy because he was a friend, and if you were his friend, you would be a friend for life. He was kind, gentle, and a genuine fraternalist. We will miss Billy on the board because one could always count on his ability to weigh all of the facts and make sound, level-headed decisions. He brought stability to the board. When I think of Billy, I feel a sense of gratitude for his patriotic service in the military and for his years of splendid leadership in the American Legion. Billy was a patriot. And for those of us who have an affinity for old tractors and farm equipment, Billy was our star expert. Most of all, Billy was an inspiration. I can only imagine the glory he is experiencing now. —Leonard Mikeska Supreme Lodge Chief Financial Officer
† Billy would have a drink ready for us (directors) after a stressful board meeting. Whiskey, Sprite, and orange juice was the concoction he made. He looked forward to it after the board meetings in his room. We met in his room after the day’s meeting to blow off steam and to prepare to leave for the evening supper. Billy always moved to adjourn the board meeting. We compared notes on our other passion, which was American Legion, and how they did things in his area compared to my area in District 9. I loved his no nonsense business personality at board meetings. He sat across the table from me at board meetings, and I loved the looks he gave me during some of the presentations, votes, or discussions we had. —Bradley Stavinoha District Five Director

A tribute in honor of District Four Director Billy Rollwitz January 24, 1938 - October 19, 2018
† We all have different memories of good and useful life of service. Our old
Brother Billy, but one thing that they all have in common is his solid determination. His love of family, country, and God provided the Supreme Lodge with an old-school sensibility that will be dearly missed. For 13 years, Billy served SPJST District Four as a director, actively participating in the SPJST decision-making processes and promoting life insurance sales, home and ranch loans, and fraternalism. During that time, Billy and I shared the south end of the large conference table during Supreme Lodge meetings. You can get to know a person pretty well in that amount of time! I greatly valued Brother Billy’s common sense perspective, his patriotic spirit, his warm sense of humor, and his friendship. We have been all been touched by Billy’s passing, but the sadness in our hearts and in the hearts of his loved ones is tempered knowing that he lived a
SPJST ritual book included a section referencing the passing of an esteemed member of our Society. The words, I believe, are especially applicable here. “The final gavel has been sounded by the Supreme Architect and the curtains of fraternal love and fellowship have been drawn together on the life of our departed brother. Those of us who were close to Billy and came in contact with him frequently knew that he spent a great deal of this time in an earnest effort to lessen the hardships, sufferings, and various problems of the members of his immediate family, as well as his fellow members in our Order, and of all his fellow men. He lived and served according to the instructions and teachings he received in our Order on Benevolence, Humanity, and Brotherhood. May honor be given to his memory now and forever.” —Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President
† Billy was a man of his word. He never hesitated to say exactly how he felt on issues being discussed. I have had the pleasure of serving on the rest home board and the SPJST Supreme Lodge for many years and have never had a truer friend. I always discussed matters with him and on many of the issues, we did not see eye to eye. However, this never affected our friendship. It got to the point of us just looking at each other, and we knew what each other was thinking. Billy stood firm in what he believed, and I respected him for his decisions even though I did not agree at times with him. We respected and accepted each other’s decisions, and our friendship never wailed. We at SPJST will miss him in our quarterly and special called meetings. His hotel room was always the gathering place for us after meetings recessed to have a drink and share stories. His “Rollwitz Specials,” as
they were called, were a specialty. On the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Board, he served as treasurer for many years, and until he stepped down in March of this year, I never realized how time consuming the treasurer’s position was. I found that out as I served as interim treasurer until we filled the position with his replacement. He deeply cared about both organizations and always did what he thought was right to make them successful. Our friendship went further with phone calls to each other on a regular basis. I always turned to him for advice on many things, especially when it came to purchasing farm equipment or trailers. There was no one else better than Billy at this, and I never knew anyone more adept to this trade. He could buy something for $1,000, fix it up, and sell it for $5,000 or $10,000! What a dealer! I am sure some of you helped him make a living! We will miss him dearly and wish his family the best in the future because we all have lost one heck of a man. God bless you, Billy, and may you rest in peace. —Donnie Victorick District One Director Supreme Lodge Chairman S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Board President

The October 3, 2018, meeting of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 7:05 p.m. District One Youth Counselor Sharon Russell led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Lodge 18, Elgin: we need you, your ideas to keep hall activities alive Finally, I have a printer that works; for the time being that is. Two years ago, I purchased a printer. For the last three months, I have tried to get ink, to no avail. So new printer it is. They don’t tell you that the necessary supplies are being discontinued when making a purchase; you have to find out the hard way. What an ordeal! Computers are supposed to make life easier. What a laugh! A couple of weeks ago we went to the grocery store and were turned away because the computers were not working. What is going to happen to all these modern products that are computer driven when the computer is upgraded? Guess what, you will be buying new re-
7
placements. We had a great attendance at the Corpus Christi Getaway, and everyone had a great time. The Home Office sponsors that every year. October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas, and there are many activities planned for the month. I was hoping to make some Czech pastries, but due to doctor appointments, that didn’t happen. Hopefully, I will be able to make something in November. We have had air conditioners worked on or replaced at the hall. Charles Wilson had knee surgery. That puts the hall in need of help. We need new members as all of us that are active are up in age. SPJST has so much to offer. How do we get the word out and let people know all that SPJST has available? Other companies advertise on television, mail flyers, etc. Should we be doing that? We tried hosting an open house, but we had a very small turnout. I just don’t know what the answer is. If you have suggestions, we sure would like to hear them. We have lost another one of our members who moved to an assisted living home in Austin. The same is happening at the dances where attendance is down. We see lodges talking about selling their hall. Lodge 18 donates the hall for benefits and fundraisers. How long can this go on? We need you and your ideas to keep the hall activities alive! Some hearts, like evening primroses, open more beautifully in the shadows of life. ~Sarah Wells Irene Vrabel, Reporter —SPJST—

Sunshine Lady Dorothy announced October birthday celebrants - Georgia Holy, Margaret Martinek, Bertha Podhrasky, and Georgie Morales. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Georgia and Georgie. The others were absent. Quilt scheduler Pat Fowler announced we were quilting the Junior Sokol Traveling Fund Quilt and will continue quilting on it in November and January 2019, if needed. We don’t quilt in December, as we party. It has a lot of quilting, but is very pretty. We will quilt in November till about 11 or 11:30 a.m. then we all get to go out to lunch on the Circle. We are going to Fiesta Grill so everyone come; the Circle is paying. President Irene and Kay Lynn Kovar attended a scissor sharpening event at Ennis Presbyterian Church. They said it was very interesting, and President Irene had a nice talk about it. President Irene will have a workshop on how to make quilt tops in January 2019. It will be interesting. If you’re wanting to learn how to make quilt tops, be sure and attend in January. President Irene announced that we will start selling chances in November on the Christmas quilt so bring your

Fort Worth Friendship Club Members of Fort Worth Friendship Club met Wednesday, October 3, 2018, for their monthly meeting/social at St. Thomas Parish Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell. Our guest was Linda Powell who joined the Club with Chris from the church office who joined us for lunch. Barbara welcomed everyone. Secretary Laurie Dawson read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Margaret Sears gave the financial report. Both were approved as presented. President Barbara appointed Jo Ann Wilcox as chairperson of the nominating committee. If anyone has any suggestions and/or nominations, let Jo Ann know. President Barbara discussed the fact that after 37 years, the original St.
Thomas Food Pantry on Azle Street closed on August 3. Liz Curzon, the former manager of St. Thomas Food Pantry, is now affiliated with St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry in Saginaw. It was discussed that we invite Liz to come speak to the Club with the possibility of our group supporting the Saginaw pantry as for years the Friendship Club has supported St. Thomas Food Pantry three times each year. Barbara will contact Liz. A letter was read from the Alzheimer’s Association as thanks for our donation in the memory of Paula Arsenault who passed away earlier this
year. A report was made on Shirley Martin who had an accident at home with a lot of injuries. It was reported she is slowly recovering and does get out of the house some. It was reported that Adele Strand fell at home and broke the femur bone in her leg. After a few days stay in the hospital, she went to a rehab facility, contacted pneumonia, and is now back at Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital at City View. Let’s remember Shirley and Adele in our prayers. Rose Ann Spann thanked all for the cards sent to her and husband Jimmy. They were all appreciated. It was nice to have Betty and Stanley Krenek back with us at the meeting. They have been missed. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to our only October celebrant - Sharron Connelly. May you have many more. Sunshine person Darlene Tompkins reported she mailed a get well card to Mary Schaffer, which was returned. Darlene asked for a better address. Get well cards were also mailed to Betty Krenek, Adele Strand, Rose Ann Spann, Lorraine Cross, and Claire Keighley. Thinking of you cards will be mailed to Lois Smith, Tracy Horn, Mary Ann Krivanek, Margaret Hoenig, and Joyce Helgeson who have missed a few recent meetings. We did have five door prizes (I didn’t get names of the donors), but our happy winners were Elizabeth Creamer, Lola Taylor, Darlene Tompkins, Agnes Saldana, and Stanley Krenek. Special thanks to the donors - you are always appreciated. Winners of the 50/50 dollar

game were Betty Carter and Sharron Connelly. Mary Ann suggested the president contact Jon Durham at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth about baking our Thanksgiving turkey and making the dressing and gravy. A vote was taken, and it was unanimous that we hire him to do this. All members are being asked to bring a dish to complement turkey, dressing, and gravy. It was also voted that table decorations would be brought by the persons sitting at that table and colors for November would be “fall” colors. Decorating your own table is optional and not necessary. Plenty of paper goods, plates, and utensils are on hand. (I’ve eaten some of Jon Durham’s meals, and he is a wonderful cook.) Christmas was also discussed, and Lola Taylor suggested we follow last year’s practice and bring an unwrapped $10 gift for a child in lieu of us exchanging gifts. This was voted on and approved. October hostess Agnes Saldana and her helpers in lieu of Mary Ann Krivanek, along with Sherrill Gustavson picking up the chicken were thanked. They did a splendid job. Special thanks to all who always pitch in to help. This year, all of the tables were decorated in
a Halloween theme. We did have a winner. As I was leaving the house, I ran back inside to get my camera. The batteries were down so none of my pictures came out. I am so sorry about this as we did have some beautifully decorated tables. I do seem to recall that Elizabeth Creamer and Mary Agnes Ward were sitting at the winning table and all got a surprise package. Congratulations to all! Hostesses for November will be Alma Feil, Margaret Hoenig, and Mary Agnes Ward. Several of our members attended Heritage Day at SPJST Lodge 92. All had a good time. Margaret Sears had knee surgery recently and is already walking without crutches or cane, but she still has a way to go. We hope her follow up with the doctor went well. I must also write about Lydia Alholm who lives at Wellington Retirement Home. The other day she rode the Wellington bus to Walmart as she needed to pick up a few items for her use and for her sister Frances. She realized she only had 10 more minutes to be out front for the bus, and in her haste to be on time, she fell and broke her leg. Currently, she is at North Hills Hospital and will need therapy before going back
home. Let’s wish her a speedy recovery and keep her in our prayers. Her grandson Matt from the Chicago area is coming in a few days to visit and check on her. Following the meeting, grace was said, and a great luncheon was enjoyed. Games were then played. The next meeting will be November 7. See you then. Mix in bowl until smooth, put 1 tablespoon oil in bowl. Roll dough around in oil. Cover with Saran Wrap. Let dough rest in warm place 30 minutes to 1 hour. Cut into 3 parts (work with 1 part at a time). Knead for 1 minute. Roll each part to approximately 14- x 16-inches on floured cloth. Brush dough with melted butter. Stay about 1 inch from edge of dough with all ingredients except about 2 inches of dough left on long side, to pull over top of roll to seal it off. Place on each part the following:
Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point donated $150 to community supporter Danny McDonald who was injured recently in a bicycle accident while he was participating in a benefit bicycle ride. Danny suffered several broken bones and is unable to work while he recovers. Danny rides his bike in honor of many individuals to raise thousands of dollars for cancer research. He has also organized fundraisers for various charitable causes helping many people in their most desperate time of need. A benefit was held for Danny on Saturday, October 13 in Belton. 2 cups apples, peeled and shredded 1/3 cup raisins 1/3 cup coconut 1/3 cup rolled fine cornflakes or vanilla wafers sprinkled over all 1/2 cup pecans, chopped 1/2 cup sugar with 1 Tablespoon cinnamon, mixed (sprinkled over all ingredients) 3 Tablespoons butter, melted and drizzled over all ingredients Pick up cloth along the long edge and roll up like jelly roll, stopping when ingredients are covered and leaving about 2 inches of dough with no ingredients on it. Fold in and pinch the 1-inch edges on the 2 sides to keep juice from escaping. You should have dough left on long side to stretch the dough over the top of the roll. With seam side down, place roll on greased foil-lined pan. Brush lightly with butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes on middle rack until golden in color. Brush with butter again. The Fly Who Came In From The Cold by d.knape
It is so dark outside we cannot see a star we are at the edge of Fall and the sun refuses to cooperate it should have been shining by now but it is still stuck somewhere below that slim crack called the horizon waiting for a signal to rise for the sun timing is everything we cannot depend on daylight and its saving grace soon we will turn back the clocks as we turn our backs to Summer we think we will gain on time and finally have the upper hand yet later in a remarkable turnaround we will pay the price when Time with a smirk on its clock face takes that hour back again. —SPJST—
In Memory of Martha Schimek Martha Jane Schimek breathed her last breath on earth on Thursday, October 18, 2018. She is now at peace in heaven and fully renewed in spirit. She was born Marta Johanna Hejtmanek on November 18, 1924, in El Maton, Texas, to Frank Joseph Hejtmanek and Albina Wetzel Hejtmanek. At the age of four, her family moved to Ashby, Texas, which Martha Jane recently referred to Mary Jane Schimek as “my stomping grounds.” She attended school there until she went to Blessing High School, from which she graduated near the top of her class in 1942. Martha Jane moved to Bay City in early 1943. On September 8, 1943, she married Ottmar Schimek. In later years, Martha Jane worked at a few places, the longest as a secretary at Central Power and Light Company. After retiring in 1973, she volunteered with the Salvation Army store in Bay City. Over the years, she helped to care for family members and friends. Martha Jane’s parents were active in

This fly is out of place and out of line a fly who comes into the house this late in the season not a typical summer fly that comes with summer heat but a fly who has the audacity to show up in October a holdover or just a late bloomer he’s here to buzz our heads and harass us in the kitchen landing on the stove, the table, the plates this morning oddly enough he came into my office as if to say hello and then to show his cleverness he landed on the keyboard knowing he was safe the fly that appeared out of nowhere is crafty and incredibly lucky I have to hand it to him he knows when the swatter comes out and disappears

the Evangelical Czech-Moravian Brethren (now called The Unity of the Brethren in Texas) church at which her father helped organize the local congregation. Martha Jane (and later Ottmar) continued to be active in that denomination until about 1953, when they joined First Presbyterian Church in Bay City. She was busy and an involved member, including being an elder, visiting, and being active in Women of the Church. Martha Jane was proud of her and Ottmar’s Czech heritage, and she provided extended family with genealogical information that she gathered. Martha Jane and Ottmar were able to make several trips to visit relatives in the Czech Republic. Her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren enjoyed going to her house where they enjoyed her wonderful cooking, especially her delicious kolache. She spoke frequently of fond memories of her teachers and schoolmates, and she worked to put together class/school reunions over the years. They were a very close-knit group. Martha Jane was a member of SPJST Lodge 148, El Maton. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years; her parents; siblings Anna Mae Jurek, Georgia Lostak, Alice Jurek, Frank Hejtmanek, and George Hejtmanek; and great-granddaughter

Honorary pallbearers were Jud Austin, Clyde Workman, Tom Uher, Gene Klepac, Greg Westmoreland, Crayden Dennard, nieces, and nephews. Visitation was Sunday, October 21 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Taylor Bros. District Two youth: games, food, fun at lock-in Dear Members, District Two youth members and friends had a great time on Friday evening, October 12, 2018, at the Temple Youth Recreation Center. Even though it was not the usual 12-hour lock-in we have had in the past, youth had plenty of time to enjoy all the outstanding games and activities, pizza, and ice cream. The gym was one of the favorites with exciting volleyball and basketball games. The game room which included air hockey, ping-pong, table tennis, bas-
ketball, and several other games was another huge hit. Even with the center offering video games, most all youth joined in the other games to keep busy and enjoy their friends. There were some awesome and fun crafts made also. And, of course, door prizes were a must. We had some great prizes thanks to Five Below! Thank You! Thank you to all who came to enjoy the evening. A big thanks to the chaperones - Amber Bartek (47), Kelly Taisler (80), Tammy Martinez (47), Sandra Kaderka (29), and Sharon Kaderka (29). President řádu Freddie Kaluža zahájil schůzi, přivítal přítomné členstvo, složili jsme přísahu vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí a uctili jsme památku zemřelých členů.

starými známými a užijeme dobré časy. Narozeniny oslavily v září Cindy Matúš a Marcela Vaculík. —SPJST—

itage Museum. “Beyond the Wall” is a documentary that looks at how the abrupt political changes of the 1980s affected Central Europeans. The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 symbolized the end of the Cold War and spurred on the peaceful revolutions that caused Communism to crumble. Using period film footage and oncamera interviews, film makers Rob Dennis and Mark Byne uncover the complexities of living under totalitarian rule. Featuring dissidents, artists, escape organizers and ordinary people in Ger-
VĚSTNÍK many, the Czech Republic and Poland, ‘Beyond the Wall” humanizes life under Communism and highlights the complex issues that still face the region. “The stories of living in a totalitarian country are often complicated and dichotomic,” said Susan Chandler, administrator of the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple. “People had their basic needs met housing, a job, food, healthcare, vacations. One could live a decent life if they did not think too hard about it. Which made it most difficult for artists, scientists, philosophers and anthropologists. Art was heavily censured. Science was
sacrificed to popular doctrines. Free thinking was criminal – people were jailed for it. The activities of outside cultures were debunked. Travel was strictly regulated. “Free education was provided to some but could be easily denied. If your grandparents had been a bit middle class under the free democracy period, by owning a few acres and farming it, or if your third cousin had left during the Prague Spring in 1968, that could disqualify even a devout communist from a college education, even in 1988, regardless of excellent test scores and school records.
“It was dangerous to question the obviously absurd ideologies, systems, and regulations, so people found ways to survive, psychologically. Therefore young Czech artists such as Vaclav Havel wrote in the genre of the theater of the absurd. It was the actual matrix in which they were living. These works were smuggled out to the West, which eventually brought help,” Chandler said. “From what our European visitors to the Museum have been telling me the last few years, knowledge is once more in jeopardy. They tell me that people are forgetting – or never knew – how things were under communism,” said Chan-
Texas Czech Genealogical Society introduces 2018 Christmas Ornaments associated with a legend, symbol or tradition For week three, Texas Czech Ge-
nealogical Society is pleased to offer four lovely glass ornaments that are associated with traditions and/or symbols. These ornaments, along with a large array of other items suitable for gift-giving may be purchased at the TCGS Gift Shop, located in the lower level of the SPJST Home Office Building, 520 North Main Street, Temple, Texas, or by contacting Nancy Machu at nbmachu@gmail.com, or by calling 512218-1559. We will be happy to ship your order for a small shipping and handling charge. The Tradition of the Christmas Cookie TSL-36 - $8 Baking Christmas cookies is a tradition that is near and dear to many of us. Memories of baking cookies with our mothers, grandmothers, children, grandchildren, and even friends are precious. Through the years, Christmas cookie history can be traced back to Medieval Europe where they were made with ingredients such as cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, almonds, and dried fruit. The Dutch brought the earliest examples of Christmas cookies to the United States in the 17th century. Originally, Christmas cookies were simple sugar cookies, or sugar biscuits. Some were cut into shapes related to Christmas after cookie cutters became available in American markets. Many families baked cookies to hang on their Christmas trees or to use as gifts, not only at Christmas, but also for other occasions and, of course, everyone knows of the tradition of leaving cookies
and milk out for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. Also called Amish sugar cookies, or Nazareth sugar cookies, the modern sugar cookie was created by the Moravians, who settled in the Nazareth area of Pennsylvania. It was adopted as the official state cookie in 2001. The chocolate chip cookie was created by accident in 1930 by Ruth Graves Wakefield at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. Lacking baking chocolate for her cookie recipe, she substituted a chopped semi-sweet chocolate bar, expecting it to melt into the batter during baking. The chocolate did not melt, and the cookie became an instant American classic. Ruth received a lifetime supply of chocolate for the rights to publish the recipe. (Source: Wikipedia) The Symbol of the Peacock TSL-48 - $12 Known as the bird with 100 eyes, because of the iridescent, eye-like patterns in its beautiful tail, the peacock is a symbol of the all-seeing omniscience of God. It is also associated with the resurrection of Christ because it sheds its old feathers every year and grows newer, brighter and more beautiful ones. The regal peacock is a symbol of immortality. Ancient Greeks believed that the flesh of the peacock never spoiled. This symbolism was adopted by early Christianity, and thus, many early Christian paintings and mosaics show the peacock. Veselé Vánoce TSL-30 - $9 This beautiful ornament displaying
the most common way that Czech people around the world express “Merry Christmas” has been offered for several years, but it never fails to sell out before the season for sales is over. Veselé Vánoce is inscribed on the front, along with a picture of a church. Printed on the reverse side is a description of Czech Christmas customs. This Czech greeting is so common and so extensively used that even other nationalities use it frequently! This ornament is a must for every Czech family’s Christmas tree. The Symbol of the Lighthouse TSL-14 - $8 The lighthouse is a tall circular stone structure built upon the highest point of land, closest to the sea and its potential dangers. It stands alone, symbolizing strength, guidance and safe harbor; it is a welcoming sign for all who travel by sea. It guides ships along their route, directing them away from danger and it notifies the sailors of approaching rocks, reefs and other obstacles which they must cautiously navigate. The lighthouse is a comforting sign that the harbor is near. The lighthouse lifts up our spirits and inspires us. It symbolizes guidance through life and serves as a symbol of Christ, the light of the world. Submitted by, Nancy Machu SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—

More than 90 percent of the young population know absolutely nothing; and that’s dangerous,” said John Bok of the Czech Republic. “If you don’t know your history,” he said. “You don’t know your future.” For more on this topic, listen to “Interview of John Bok with Radio Prague’ at https://www.radio.cz/en/section/oneon-one/john-bok-former-dissident-stilldriven-by-anti-establishment-zeal —SPJST—
