Minutes of the October 16 and 17, 2018 Regular Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST held at the Home Office, Temple, Texas PRESIDING The meeting was called to order by Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at 8:09 a.m. ATTENDING Supreme Lodge—Brian Vanicek, President; Hiram Dixon, Vice President; Leonard Mikeska, Chief Financial Officer; Roy Vajdak, Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services; Donnie Victorick - District One/Chairman; Jesse Pospisil District Two; John Engelke - District Three; Billy Rollwitz - District Four; Bradley Stavinoha - District Five; Karen Kaspar - District Six/Vice Chairman; Robert J. Bayer - District Seven. OPENING OF MEETING The meeting was opened by Supreme Lodge Chairman Victorick with a welcome and recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed in respect to our departed members and in honor of our military troops, law enforcement, and EMS workers all over the world. Chief Financial Officer Mikeska led the Supreme Lodge in an opening prayer. Supreme Lodge Chairman Victorick distributed a handout from a seminar that he attended. The Leadership Excerpts document was written by Army Ranger Keni Thomas. LEADERSHIP EXCERPTS Keni Thomas, Army Ranger Leadership is an example we are setting for the people we serve. Set an example for people to follow. If you fail to plan, plan on failing. Know your mission and train those who are counting on you. You do not get further alone! We need each other. Leadership is a choice we make. Know why we are here. Your biggest gift is who is on your right and who is on your left. Always know the five W’s when you do something (who, what, why, when, and where). Leadership is the process of influencing others to accomplish a mission by providing purpose, direction, and motivation. You do not have to like everyone you work with. You just have to count on them. You have got to have faith that the people in charge are consistently making good decisions and acting in your best interest. Leadership is not a position. It is the example you set. That means everyone must lead. Good is never good enough when better is expected. As a leader, you do what is right because it is the right thing to do. Sometimes the burden of leadership requires hard choices to be made based on difficult situations with lot less information than you would like. At the end of the day, you will have to live with the choices you make. The burden of leadership quite often makes you a target and will throw you into the line of fire. You can be certain others are going to judge you, your actions, and the choices you make. When you stop trying to better yourself, you no longer lead by example. When you no longer lead by example, you stop making a difference. When you stop making a difference, then what are you doing here? You are only taking up space! Lead, follow, or get out of the way! President Vanicek shared that he spent time with Commissioner Clyde Fitzgerald. Mr. Fitzgerald oversees the largest Port of Houston, and any item shipped into Texas comes through this port. SPJST officers and directors were offered a private tour of the port.

Texas Czech Genealogical Society introduces 2018 Christmas Ornaments associated with a legend, symbol or tradition T
exas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) introduces four more of its 2018 collection of Legend, Symbol, and Tradition ornaments. The ornaments are available in the TCGS Gift Shop located in the lower level of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas, or by contacting Nancy Machu at nbmachu@gmail.com or calling 512-218-1559. Symbol of the Fish SL-16 - $9 Jesus was a shepherd of souls and a fisher of men. He fed the crowd of 5,000 with two fish and five loaves of bread. He called his disciples “fishers of men.” Accordingly, people use a fish as the ultimate symbol to distinguish themselves as Christians. Fish represent fertility and renewal of life. Just as fish are born in water, Christians are born in the water of baptism through Jesus Christ, who invites us all to become “fishers of men.” The letters of the Greek word for fish, “Ichthys,” are the first letters of the Greek phrase for “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.” Symbol of the Lion and Lamb SL-18 - $10 The characteristics of the lion and the lamb form a vivid contrast of expecta-
tions when used metaphorically. Christian beliefs attribute the qualities of both the powerful lion, known for its strength and ferocity, and the lamb, regarded as a gentle and dependent creature, to Jesus Christ the Son of God. The depiction of a lion lying down with a lamb symbolizes peace and harmony. The Bible tells us that when Jesus returns to Earth, all who are enemies will live together in harmony, even the animals. The powerful lion will lie down with the gentle lamb, and love and peace will reign. Embodied within Christ are the lion’s majesty and might, as well as the lamb’s innocence and gentleness. Love the complete Christ, both lion and lamb, and rejoice that He is King! This very meaningful ornament includes an inspiring explanation of the symbol of the lion and the lamb on the reverse side. The Tradition of the Pickle SL-10 - $6 Several different countries claim the tradition of the pickle. According to German tradition, as the Christmas tree was decorated, a pickle was hidden in the innermost branches of the tree. On Christmas morning, the first child to find the pickle was rewarded with an additional small present left by St. Nicholas. This
tradition is observed by many families today, and as the children grow, the family purchases smaller and smaller pickles to make it more difficult to find. The pickle tradition encourages people to take time to enjoy the moment with family and friends and, while searching for the pickle, to enjoy the beauty of the tree and its many ornaments along with the beauty of the season, rather than focusing immediately on the gifts under the tree. Baby’s First Christmas SL-32 (boy) - $13 SL-34 (girl) - $13 There is no more fitting gift for the 2018 baby girl or baby boy than a special Christmas ornament commemorating his or her birth! This ornament will be cherished for a lifetime, and is often the basis for a collection which the parents or other family members add to each year. A 17- or 18-year collection of beautiful and meaningful ornaments will be a wonderful beginning of that child’s own collection in years to come. Brazos Valley CHS hosts Czech opera Saturday, Dec. 4 in Bryan
Taylor Czech Chorus celebrates 50 years Music filled the air as an estimated 385-plus attendees helped the Taylor Czech Chorus celebrate its 50th anniversary on Sunday, October 28, 2018, at SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor. Keeping true to a Czech tradition and characteristic that is proudly practiced still today, no one went home hungry. Everyone was treated to a variety of foods and traditional Czech pastries. There was food, food, and still more food! The center of the table featured a customized cake honoring Taylor Czech Chorus. Taylor Czech Chorus was formed in 1967 when several individuals got together to sing Czech songs as a way to have fun and preserve their heritage. Soon after, the group was invited to entertain at a variety of events and gatherings. Throughout the years, many of the same faces remained adding new ones along the way. Taylor Czech Chorus singers and band
were the featured afternoon entertainment. Big thanks to Scooter Dubec (saxophone) and Edward Kopecky (accordion) for joining in with the band. At one time, Kopecky was a member of the Taylor Czech Chorus and accompanied the singers with his accordion. Charter members Carolyn Hickman, Alvin Kubala, and Patsy Bartosh were honored during a special presentation. Bartosh served for many years as the pianist and director when the group was first formed. The newest CD, “Still . . . Carrying on the Tradition” was introduced and sold publicly for the first time since its release in October 2018, as a special tribute to Czech Heritage Month. To purchase a CD, contact Diane Volek at 512-4229652 or Nolin Werchan at 512-595-9520. Taylor Czech Chorus would like to thank everyone for the continued support throughout the years, and the group looks forward to entertaining you in the future.
