y favorite part of serving as Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication is seeing and visiting with our members around the state. David and I enjoyed a fantastic time with the members of Lodge 142, Houston in Tomball on Saturday, November 17 and the members of Lodges 92, Fort Worth and 154, Fort Worth on Sunday, November 18. Those were two of the first Christmas parades of the season, and they were both special events! Plus, a trip to anywhere north of West always warrants a stop at Slovacek’s in West. What a pleasure it was to see and visit with my good friend and Slovacek’s employee Willie Zahirniak of Lodge 54, West. See you next time, Willie!

VĚSTNÍK

= = = Fraternal News = = = State Fraternal Director shares December updates Warm Wishes from the SPJST Home Office Fraternal Department Veselé Vánoce! Christmas is upon us again! It seems to come faster and faster each year. I found a quote by Calvin Coolidge and wanted to share it with you: “Christmas is not a time or a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” I truly believe these words. Christmas is what you make of it. In my mind, it’s time to place a log on the fire and curl up on the couch in a blanket with a good book, hot chocolate, and a time to think back and count our many blessings. It is also time to give thanks to our King Jesus Christ. Please let us remember those who are less fortunate and are in need of a helping hand this Christmas. We can all make a positive difference in another’s life. I wish you and your family many blessings. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Holiday Stress? Try These 5 Tips for a Heart-Healthy Holiday Season He’s a mean one, alright. If the Grinch has stolen your healthy holiday, check out these tips from Richard Stein, professor of medicine and cardiology at New York University School of Medicine in New York City and a spokesman for the American Heart Association. 1. Go in with a plan. For example, make a pact with yourself during the holidays: “For these three weeks, I will get at least 30 minutes of activity per day, I’ll have a reasonably healthy breakfast and lunch, and limit the sweets. I’ll leave my meds out on the dresser so I won’t leave the house without having taken them.” 2. Beware of party perils. Special holiday events often serve up extra helpings of high-fat foods. If you’re a guest, plan on eating a healthy snack before you go and consciously choose to eat less at the event. If you’re the host, challenge yourself to whip up a delicious and heart-healthy menu. Your guests will probably thank you! 3. Stay active—even in the hustle and bustle of the season. Sprinkle in some healthy behaviors

with your daily activities. If dinner is going to be a feast, opt for a light lunch, then take a vigorous walk. When the kids are home from school, squeeze in some active chores and trips to the park. 4. But not too active. Give yourself the gift of peace. Control your own schedule and don’t overbook yourself. 5. Lay out a plan for January, February and beyond. Your poinsettias are drooping and the eggnog’s gone. Now what? It’s great that you want to start doing healthy things—like exercising 30 minutes a day or making an appointment to get your blood pressure checked—but don’t go dashing through your to-do list too fast, or you might not stick to your plan. Lay out realistic steps for the months ahead. For example, instead of joining a gym, you might want to start a vigorous walking program first. It’s free, and it’s a great way to take in more physical activity. SPJST Lifetime Achiever Award The definition of lifetime is the duration of a person’s life. This award is to recognize individuals or couples who have made a significant impact in their lodge’s success and growth over a lengthy period of time. Those individuals or couples should be of a mature age. In the past couple of years, the Home Office has received nomination applications for many young members that still have many years of service to the lodge and its members. Think about it . . . if a young or middle-aged member receives this award, is this telling them that they have achieved their significant impact to their lodge and here on out they are finished contributing to their lodge and its members? The Lifetime Achiever Award form can be found online at www.spjst.org. Please complete and return the form to SPJST Fraternal Department.

Outgoing Officers With the election of new officers, do not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not elected to serve in 2019 and does not seek reelection in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meeting.

forms even if there are no changes from the previous year. Fraternal Activities Coordinators, it is very important to enter and complete your hours by Friday, January 18, 2019, to receive those refunds and other incentives. Please look for the 2019 officer listing that was mailed out the first week of November from Receptionist Tamara Gettys. This listing needs to be updated and turned into the Home Office after you have your elections. All other deadline dates remain the same. They are:

Fraternalist of the Year Nominations It’s time to start thinking about selecting your lodge’s fraternalist of the year for 2018. This is your chance to recognize a stand-out individual who through example and accomplishment, provided outstanding service to your lodge or community this past year. This year, we will again be recognizing your lodge’s fraternalist at your district spring meeting. Please know the fraternalist of the year information sheet and application can be found online at www.spjst.org. Thanks for tending to this item at your October, November, or December meeting. If you have any questions, please give me a call.

Where else can you come and have a party with family and friends and not have to pay rent? We love to see families come. You couch potatoes come get some exercise; it’s good for your health. We have elected officers for 2019, they will be installed in December at the meeting. With the Christmas season here, we will have refreshments at the December meeting - just a little something to thank the officers and trustees for working so hard to keep the hall going. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Jeanette Peterson. The First Flight — Importance to the Space Program The Wright Brothers' first flight lasted just 12 seconds and made it into only four newspapers the next morning. The pioneering, 120-foot flight in a fragile airplane over Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, may have gone off with little fanfare that day in 1903, but it would soon have enormous implications that flew around the world. Brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright did not invent flight, but they became the Internet of their era with their invention of the Flyer. It was the first manned, powered, heavier-than-air and controlled-flight aircraft. It brought people and ideas together like never before. In just a few decades, the basics of their science and engineering became instrumental in warfare, put globalization on the map and man on the moon. On December 17, 1903, Orville climbed into the primitive cockpit and lifted the Flyer from the level ground of Kitty Hawk into the air. The Flyer flew for 12 seconds before landing with a thud 120 feet away. The brothers made four flights that day, the last one soaring 852 feet and lasting almost one minute. These flights launched the world into the aviation age and later the space program for good. Source: https://www.space.com/16634-wright-brothers-first-flight.html

Background Leoš Janáček composed The Cunning Little Vixen in 1924. “This is one of the most delightful operas ever written - a charming, funny, touching story about love and life cycles, based on a popular Czech cartoon series - a sort of ‘Charlie Brown’ of Czech opera,” said Jonathan Eaton, UNT College of Music Margot and Bill Winspear Chair in Opera Studies. The opera charts the adventures of a charming, feisty, cunning little vixen and contrasts the fierce vitality and exuberance of the animal world with the human world. It’s a perfect evening for newcomers to opera and cognoscenti alike. This delightful kid-friendly opera is a sample of true Moravian culture! The students worked with professors at Masaryk University in Moravia earlier this year to perfect their Czech pronunciations. This is part of a performance tour sponsored by the Czech Education Foundation of Texas (CEFT). The opera will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4 at Rudder High School in Bryan; at 7 p.m. on Wednes-

day, December 5 at Sokol Activity Center, Ennis; at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 6 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Austin; and at 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, December 8 at Sokol Dallas. The entire opera was performed at UNT earlier this month. “The quality of the singing and music was excellent as always with the CEFT tours,” said Susan Chandler, museum administrator at Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple. “But the costumes for all the woodland creatures were full of surprises and color. I hope they will win awards for this show.” About UNT College of Music The College of Music is one of the nation’s largest and most respected comprehensive music schools. It offers fully accredited degrees from the bachelor to doctoral levels and is home to the world’s first jazz studies degree program. TCGS presents Christmas Ornaments made in Czech Republic hunting as a sport, waking in the This article will be the last in a se- room early morning hours and heading to the

ries that has featured the Legend, Symbol, and Tradition ornaments available from Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Gift Shop, located in the downstairs gallery of the SPJST Home Office building at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas. Anyone who intends to visit our gift shop is urged to do so quickly, as we will be open only through 4 p.m. on Friday, December 14. We will return on Wednesday, January 9, 2019. We would like to highlight five beautifully crafted mouth blown ornaments that were made in the Czech Republic: This simple clear glass ornament is highlighted with petals resembling the popular Christmas flower, the poinsettia. The glittered ornament will shine beautifully on your tree this year. CO15110 - $9 A clear glass ornament, mouth blown, and expertly decorated in gold would be a truly beautiful addition to your tree this year. CO15071 - $9 This extremely desirable ornament stands out because of its deep red color and contrasting white scroll design that reminds one of snow. It is also made by a prominent Czech ornament factory in Moravia. CO15528 - $9 Mushrooms are a commodity that is widely used in the Czech lands. They are a symbol of good luck, and they are believed to give one good health and strength. Mushroom soup, mushroom gravy, and mushroom strudl are common uses for this plant. Families treat mush-

forest with their wicker baskets to find this delicacy. While mushroom are never red, the whimsy of this ornament make it truly Czech. TSL-38 - $7 This whimsical owl was also masterfully crafted in the Czech Republic. The owl lives in darkness, and his visual ability to see through the darkness has been compared with the light of Christ dissolving the darkness of the world. This cute ornament will light up your world every time you glance in its direction. TSL-42 - $9 Besides Christmas ornaments, Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Gift Shop holds a large array of other Czech-related items. We invite you to visit us to see our selection of Czech crystal, Czech pottery, jewelry made with Czech beads and crystals, rosaries, dictionaries, maps, bumper stickers, cookbooks, and other novelties. The men on your list may enjoy a baseball cap from the Czech Republic. We have just received a shipment in four colors. For the cook on your list, we have poppy seed, noodles. cook books, aprons, and wooden spoon sets. One or two of the various genealogy books that TCGS has published over the years would make a terrific gift for someone who is interested in family research. Texas Czech Genealogical Society wishes to thank you for your friendship and patronage during the past year. We wish everyone a wonderful Christmas season and a new year filled with good health, warm friendships, and special blessings. Nancy Machu SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—

10 Czech Christmas Traditions By Klara Hajkova December 24, 2014 http://extravaganzafreetour.com/ 10-czech-christmas-traditions/

ple should not touch a single piece of salami and they expect to see a golden pig flying in the sky in the evening. It’s a bit weird but very common among Czechs. As a kid, I was always so disappointed I haven’t seen any golden pig after the whole day fasting.

It’s Christmas. It’s time to slow down, recharge batteries, spend some time with the closest ones, and have fun over some Czech traditions and superstitions! Some of them are rather weird, mysterious, or heartless. Some were forgotten, but a few can still be witnessed during Christmastime in a Czech home. Here is the list of top then known and rather weird traditions, customs, and superstitions.

2. Read the health from the sliced apples. During Christmas dinner, people half the apples, and according to the shape of the seeds, they read a prophecy of how healthy they will be in the coming year. If a star appears, then the person will be well and healthy. If a cross appears, don’t expect anything good. The same could be done with walnuts – if the inside nut is healthy and fresh, it’s a good sign. If it’s black, guess what could happen to the person in the coming year.

1. You’ll see flying golden pig on the sky if you don’t eat meat for the whole day! If you don’t eat meat on December 24, you’ll see a golden pig flying in the sky! This prohibition could be quite difficult for Czechs who are the real meat lovers. Since the morning of December 24, peo-

3. Tell your future out of the nut-boats. Light a candle in the nutshell, and watch what will happen. Both kids and adults love this tradition. It’s romantic, fun but the results of a prophecy could be sometimes heartless. The shells of walnuts are used as tiny

Wednesday, December 5, 2018 into flowers. They named each bud with a boy’s name, then that which flowered first would symbolize their future groom. The chances of getting married bore other superstitions like the girls throwing their shoe behind their backs. If the shoe points outside the door, the girl will leave the house in the next year; if the shoe points in the house, the girl will stay. 6. How to ensure you’ll be loved. Just put honey on your cheeks on December 24, so everyone will love you in the next year. 7. Money stays with you. This is rather weird but carrying one scale from the carp in your wallet supposed to ensure you’ll become rich in a coming year! The main Czech Christmas dish is a fish soup and carp with potato salad. People usually buy live carp, put it in their bathtubs, and on December 24, they kill it. It is meant that one should save a carp’s scale and carry it in the wallet so the money will stick to the person. 8. Your dog – the best guardian. To make sure that your dog will guard your house well, open the main door and push the dog backwards outside. That’s the weird one, huh?

4. Pour lead into the water and read your future. Careful! This is the dangerous one. People used to pour the hot molten lead into water, and according to the resulting shape, they would predict events for the coming year. In the beginning of the 20th century, this tradition used to be very popular; however, due to the two world wars, there was a shortage of this material, so this custom has been almost forgotten.

Being one of the most atheistic countries in the world, this is the only time a year when people actually visit church.

Also, it is very common to have a Christmas crib at home and put little Jesus inside the bed on Christmas Eve. Did you know that in the Czech Republic this cute baby Jesus delivers the Christmas tree and all the presents on December 24? I have no idea how the little toddler handles all that, but let’s keep the little child in our hearts and just believe it! —SPJST—
