T
his week’s Věstník features a memorial tribute to Honorary District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom who passed away on November 15, 2018. Brother Mike was a good, honest, and smart gentleman. He could always make me laugh. I have so many memories of Mike that I will always treasure. It was Mike’s idea back in 2002 for SPJST to get involved in parades. He saw the merit of promoting our organization in the small community and big city parades as a way to get our name out to a crowd of people. Mike secured both trailers that the two floats are built on. He also helped design the first float in its folding formation. David and I accompanied Mike and Kathy to New York City on August 14, 2003. As we arrived in the City, we noticed chaos on the streets as people were emptying building and running in the streets, walking across vehicles that were stranded because traffic lights were
no longer working. We then realized that we were stuck in the Northeast Blackout of 2003, a power outage that affected 45 million people in eight states. I always dreamed about seeing the big lights of New York City, but it was all dark. And, what a special experience it was. We walked the streets at night and were able to see the stars in the sky and even find the Milky Way - from where we were standing in Times Square. I will never forget that once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I will never forget Mike. My life has been blessed because of Mike’s guidance, leadership, and friendship. My heart breaks for his very special wife, Kathy. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and their family during this difficult time. May God’s love grant peace and comfort to them and courage to face the days ahead. —SPJST—

Traditional Czech Christmas Eve menu and customs It was once the custom to fast for the whole day on Christmas Eve, for only the person who didn’t eat until Christmas Eve dinner would be able to see the golden pig on the wall that evening. That morning the Christmas tree would have been decorated - mostly with red apples, walnuts, gingerbread, and other sweets, and on the tip of the tree the star of Bethlehem was set. It was also customary for the tree to be mostly decorated by the children because the mother had too many other things to do. Candles also had to be fastened to the tree branches, to be lit in the evening and give Christmas Eve an even greater sense of magic. The whole family would be finishing up their final preparations before the Christmas feasts, which were just beginning on Christmas Eve at nightfall. The table was covered with a white tablecloth and the legs were wreathed in garlands, so there’d be no thieves stealing from the fields. Under the table was put a bowl of grain and on it a bowl of garlic. Garlic was believed by all Slavs from ancient times to have special pow-
VĚSTNÍK ers of strengthening and protection. At that time, garlic was always present at Christmas in the Czech Lands, and used to be as important a part of Christmas as the tree and sweets. Besides garlic, the cross and the candlestick with a candle stood for the sanctity of Candlemas. The mother then layed out on the table a loaf of bread and a pot of honey. The father then tied together some shocks of grain, dipped them in holy water, and sprinkled the whole house with them, not forgetting the fire in the oven, so it wouldn’t be troublesome and burn down the house. Even if it was getting dark early on Christmas Eve, nothing could be lit until the first star came out. As soon as it did, the family all sat down together to dinner. This dinner was always plentiful in every household, for even the poorer ones tried to fill the Christmas table with the greatest number of dishes. Before dinner, the father recited the family prayer and then dinner was begun by the cutting up of a loaf of bread into many slices. Each was daubed with honey and passed out, starting with the oldest, to everyone present. If a slice or two was left then that meant that someone would arrive in the family. If one was missing, then in the next year someone would die. Then all the other courses followed, which that evening were more than usual, for it was believed that the more courses there were, the more grain there would be in the field. The traditional Czech Christmas Eve menu had different forms in different regions. In some places, the bread was followed by soup, most often mushroom,

but a traditional Christmas Eve course everywhere was kuba, which was prepared from grouts, wild mushrooms, and garlic. Like garlic and honey, mushrooms also have a special position in Christmas. According to old myths, they are ascribed a heavenly origin. Another part of the feast were peas, which were prepared in the Old Czech style sweetly, sprinkled with sugar, and gin-
gerbread. At the end, desserts were passed around, combined with fruit, which unlike today were dried: apples, pears, plums, and nuts. Traditional Christmas desserts were strudel and vánočka, a special Christmas bread. From the previous list, it’s clear that the abstinence that ruled the period of Advent gave way on Christmas Eve to plenty.

After finishing dinner, no one got up from the table quite yet. The father first took a walnut and an apple from a bowl in the center of the table. If the nut was rotten when cracked open, it was an omen of sickness, or even death. But everything could still be saved by the apple; if a star was revealed when it was split in half, this foretold health and long life. Not so fortunate was if the cross discovered in the middle of the apple. As soon as the man of the house had read his fortune, the process was repeated by all present, from oldest to youngest. After dinner was finished, everyone tried to stand up from the table at the same time, for it was believed that whoever stood up first would die within a year. The leftovers were then taken by the father out to the livestock. The poultry received a different treat - peas or poppy seeds so they’d lay plenty of eggs. The rooster, gander, and dog got garlic in their food so they would be as sharp as they should be in the next year. With dinner over came the time that children then and now looked forward to most: opening the presents left under the tree by Baby Jesus. After this came time for another customary practice: A very common custom, the floating of little boats made of nutshells on water. A bowl of water was set on the table and everyone put in their half-shell boat, in which was fixed a burning candle. The fortune of each boat-owner was read from the fate of their craft. If the boat made it across the bowl, then a long life lay ahead for the boat’s owner. If it sank, then something less pleasant lay in wait for the unlucky captain.

There was another custom connected with walnuts. After dinner, three nuts were cracked open and their insides removed. The first walnut shell was refilled with dirt, the second with a little piece of bread, and the third with money. The shells were then stuck back together and placed back among the other ones. At midnight every took a walnut from the bowl on the table; if someone got the nut with the dirt inside then poverty awaited them. Getting the nut with bread foretold a comfortable life, and the one with money inside naturally was a prophesy of great wealth. Other customs were practiced in particular by girls eager to marry. One way they could look into what the future had in store was throwing their shoes over their heads. If the toes pointed to the door then the parents knew to get a wedding dress ready, for the girl would be married within the next year. If, on the other hand, the toes of her shoe pointed back into the room then their daughter had another year to wait. If a girl discovered by her shoes that she had to wait for her wedding and wanted to know for how long she had to wait, she had to give up a strand of her hair. On this hair, she would tie a ring and hold it as close to a glass as she could. The number of times that the ring clinked against the glass before it settled was the number of years she had to wait. A girl curious about the physical make-up of her future husband could find out by pulling wood - closing her eyes and taking a piece of wood out of a pile. The shape of this piece of wood would reveal to her how well-built, bent, slim or fat the partner future held for her would be. This fortune could also be read by younger girls, who wanted to know about their future husbands. Single girls could attempt to get an even better idea of what their future betrothed would be like. All she had to do was to take three slips of paper with the names of her probable partners and tie them up in handkerchiefs so that not a bit stuck out. Then she tie up a fourth handkerchief and put them all under her pillow on Christmas Eve. On the morning of God’s Feast (Christmas Day), she would choose one of the hankies and untie it. If it was empty then she was never going to marry. This gloomy fate could still be averted, however, if she put the three slips of paper with the names into three dumplings, which were cooked for the Christmas Day feast. The husband-fate held for her would then be revealed by the first of the dumplings cut open. Christmas Eve ended with Midnight Mass, which was held in every church. In some regions, Christmas plays were

Vánočka The vánočka (a special bread made for Christmas) has a long history and is still popular today. The first reference to a vánočka was in the 16th century, and over the long years it has gone through many small transformations. In the past, it went under such names as huska or calta, and in some places in the Czech Republic today it can be found under a wide variety of names: pletenice, pletanka, stedrovice, stedrovecernice, stricka, strucla, zemle, and ceplik. At one time, a vánočka could only be made by a baker who was a guild craftsman. In the 18th century, people began to bake them at home by themselves. The first of the home-baked vánočka had to be given to the master of the house, so that the grain would prosper in the following year. At the end of Christmas Eve dinner, a large vánočka was sliced up. In some areas, a slice was given to the livestock, so they'd be healthy and safe from evil spirits. Vánočka wasn't, and isn't, simple and therefore, a variety of customs are followed in preparing the dough, braiding and baking it to ensure success. The woman of the house had to mix the dough while wearing a white apron and kerchief, she shouldn't talk, and she was supposed to jump up and down while the dough was rising. Another old custom was to bake in a coin. The person who found it in their slice was assured of health and wealth for all of the following
year. A burnt or ripped vánočka was a bad omen. Vánočka is an indispensable and necessary part of the Christmas holidays, whether made at home or bought in a store. There are handy people capable of making the lower braid out of seven strands (it's most often made from four), or else they braid the whole vánočka together at once from six strands. Now, you can try to bake one with the help of this recipe. Vánočka 1 Tablespoon of yeast 1 cup of milk 9 teaspoons of sugar 6 cups of medium flour vanilla sugar pinch of salt a lemon rind a nutmeg nut 1 yolk star anise 4 ounces of butter 3 Tablespoons of raisins 3 Tablespoons of almonds an egg for the icing Crumble the yeast into the room-temperature milk, add in 1 Tablespoon of sugar, sprinkle evenly with flour, and then leave it in a warm place to rise. Put the rest of the flour, 8 Tablespoons of sugar, the vanilla sugar, a pinch of salt, the lemon rind, the grated nut of nutmeg, one egg yolk, and the grated star anise into a bowl with the previous mixture when well-risen and mix well. After this, add in the softened butter and continue to mix well. When the dough no longer sticks to the side of the bowl, stir in the washed raisins and the cleaned, sliced almonds. Shape the dough in the bowl into a smooth loaf, dust it with flour, and leave it covered in a warm place to rise (with a larger amount of dough even all night.) When the dough has risen completely, divide it on a pastryboard into 9 parts to make the vánočka. The first layer is weaved from four strands, the second from three, and the third layer from two strands. Lay greased parchment paper on a baking sheet and gradually layer the strands of the vánočka on it. Leave it for a while on the sheet to finish rising, and then, before putting it in the oven, baste it with the whipped egg and sprinkle it with chopped almonds. Finally, puncture the vánočka at both ends and in the middle with skewers to prevent warping of the dough during baking. Bake slowly for about 45 minutes. http://archiv.radio.cz/christmas/vanocka.html

In Memory of Grace Schiller Grace (Gray) Schiller of Oscar, Texas, passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2018, in a Temple hospital. She was 97 years old. Grace was born October 14, 1921, in Corpus Christi, Texas. She met the love of her life, Rudolph Schiller, when he was stationed at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi during World War II. Rudy was honorably discharged Grace Schiller from the United States Navy in March 1946, and the couple was married on June 6, 1946, by Pastor Roy A. Langston at First Methodist Church in Temple. Grace was a housewife while Rudy farmed in the Oscar area for many years. She also worked at nearby stores and at Oscar Store. Grace and Rudy purchased and reopened Oscar Store in 1973. Together, they operated the store every day until the store was destroyed by a fire on April 28, 2006. The couple lived outside of Temple until they moved next door to Oscar Store in the early 1980s. After 62 years of marriage, Rudy passed away on March 2, 2009. Grace’s personality was one-of-akind. She loved Oscar Store and all of its patrons - both while she and Rudy owned it and later under new owner Thomas Maddux, who rebuilt and reopened the store as a restaurant and event venue in 2009. Grace enjoyed her beer while visiting with friends and reminiscing the good days and times. She touched generations of people with her wit and passion for life. Grace was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. She was of Catholic faith. She was preceded in death by husband Rudolph Schiller and his family – brothers-in-law Edwin Schiller in 1979, Gus Schiller in 1989, and Johnnie Schiller in 1992; sister-in-law Evelyn Henson in 2018; and nephew Albert Schiller in 2018. Grace leaves to cherish her memory sister-in-law Martha Zavodny and husband Milton of Rogers; sister-in-law Tonie Malcik of Seaton; nieces Debbie Veselka (husband Freddie) and Faye
Hudson (husband Carroll), all of Robinson, Shirley Tuerck (husband Michael) of Heidenheimer, and Melanie Zavodny (husband David) of Temple; nephews David Schiller (wife Robin) of Zabcikville and Marvin Schiller (wife Tamara) of Rogers; several great-nieces and great-nephews; special friends/caretakers Thomas Maddux and Lorianne Bland, who entered Grace’s life after Rudy passed away; and many friends. Anyone familiar with Grace knew she loved Oscar Store and its patrons so family and friends honored and celebrated her life on Sunday, December 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Oscar Store where she lived and worked so many years. Private family service will be held at a later date when Grace will be laid to rest with her husband Rudy at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. Hewett-Arney Funeral Home in Temple was in charge of arrangements. Beautiful memories are silently kept, of an Aunt we loved dearly and will never forget. —SPJST—
