State King’s Notebook by Nash Campbell • 2018-2019 SPJST State King • Lodge 24, Cyclone - District Two Hello, Vestnik Readers! Here’s a quick update on what I have been doing since Westfest. It was a fast and furious fall season for me. I completed my first semester of my junior year at Rogers ISD, and I also was enrolled in two dual credit college classes at Temple College. I had a great year playing football on the Rogers Varsity Football team. We made it to the first round of the playoffs, although we lost that game. It was really close, and I am looking forward to an even deeper playoff run for my senior year in the fall. I had a great year in the Rogers High School Band as well. I play in the percussion section, and we had an awesome marching season. I am looking forward to a fantastic concert season this spring. Since September, I have been keeping

busy working a part-time job, taking care of my show animals, which include pigs and turkeys, and keeping up with my

schoolwork. We celebrated Thanksgiving in November, and the Saturday after Thanksgiving, my brother Cade, my mom, my grandma, and I participated in the wreath laying at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. We have been doing this for about four or five years now. It is a somber time, but very rewarding to see all the people honoring the Veterans who have sacrificed for the freedoms we have and enjoy on a daily basis. Our youth club also went to the Gaylord Texas Resort in Grapevine for the ICE exhibit and lunch at Rainforest Cafe. We had a really great time. The ICE exhibit theme this year was Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and it was stunning! Continued on Page 19.

We look forward to receiving your valentines! The Trouble Tree The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the

branches with both hands. When opening the door, he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles, and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward, he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier. “Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles on the job, but one thing’s for sure, troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and children. So I just hang them on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again.” He paused. “Funny thing is,” he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick ‘em up, there ain’t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.” —Author Unknown

Lodge 88, Houston member shares alternative swimming pool proposals Dear Members, Lodge 88, Houston is bringing back the swimming pool! For nearly three decades, Lodge 88 had a pool – and many of you grew up there or raised your children there. The original Lodge 88 pool was open to all members for a usage fee, and it was instrumental in recruiting our membership base to 10,000-plus lodge members (more than double what it is

today). This pool was an asset to the entire community, and that is what it should be in the future. I personally think a pool is essential to ensure the future of Lodge 88. At the annual meeting on December 9, 2018, members approved moving forward with the pool project and officially established the Swim Committee. Below are my ideas and thoughts for alternative pool proposals for members of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston to consider. Please contact me by email kat@whyilovehouston.com or on my cell at 713-376-3011 with any questions or for more information. Modifications to the Current Pool Proposal • Present all details of construction plans and line-itemized costs publicly to all members – in writing – and solicit comments and questions before final budget is approved.

9

• Remove all Lodge 88 website references to limited pool memberships and wait lists to align with the rules passed at the annual meeting. • Notify all wait list members and members of the Greater Heights community (through local neighborhood online and printed media, preferably through organic articles so that we don’t need to pay for advertising) that we are actively recruiting members to Lodge 88, that pool plans are being actively considered, and that they can participate in plans for the new pool and become members as well once they join Lodge 88 – create an online survey (or dedicated email) for interested parties to respond with oversight by the SPJST Home Office. • Notify by mail every member of Lodge 88 within a 100-mile radius (according to the Home Office’s records) that we are planning to build a pool at Lodge 88 and are surveying how many members envi-

sion themselves using the pool if we had one, survey for specifics (lap pool, family pool, splash pad, heated therapy pool, etc.), and how often in order to establish usage fees – also provide ability to respond online, with someone at the Home Office being copied on all responses. Must provide plenty of time to accommodate for mail transit and delays in processing mail within members’ homes – no less than four to six weeks (advertise in the Vestnik – and have that issue sent to all Lodge 88 members within a 100-mile radius of Lodge 88 with a copy of the survey and directions for mailing it in or responding online). • Once we have received the survey results, advertise regularly in the Vestnik regarding the upcoming pool to solicit interest and engagement regarding alternative pool financing plans, including publishing alternative proposals presented well in advance (no less than four weeks and repeated thereafter) of a vote on such proposals. • Using the survey results, in addition to the new members who signed up for the pool or on the wait list since July 2018, create a cultivated list of potential pool # of Families

VĚSTNÍK users to establish a membership and/or usage fee regime and costs for alternative pool financing proposals. • Overview of Alternative Financing Models, assuming we need approximately $2 million in capital and that operating expenses are $350,000 per year (I make no representations as to the accuracy of these projections presented by Swim Club Committee)—see chart below. We Need to Create an Ongoing Stream of Income for our Capital Reserve The Challenge With The Current Pool Plan From An Ongoing Capital And Income Perspective: • As long as the pool bonds are separate and distinct from Lodge 88 in general, there is no ongoing source of income to pay for capital improvements to the main buildings and facilities as they are needed.

The 2019 officers of Lodge 151, Wharton are, left to right, Vice President Charles Bucek, President Gerald Macha, Second Vice President Edith Molberg, Secretary/FAC Janie Bucek, and Treasurer Carolyn Bucek.

• Though the initial proposal dedicated $1,000 per initial bond to go to the “Raise the Roof” fund, that is a one-time-only influx of cash to Lodge 88 because the bonds must be paid back in full when they

are surrendered. So when a new member pays their $6,000 bond, we must give that full $6,000 back to the surrendering pool member. Lodge 88 never sees any more than the initial approximately $350,000 in Year 1.

• While this would necessarily result in some amount of exclusivity of the pool with regards to the general membership, it is more reasonable a barrier than $6,000 intended specifically to keep the family count arbitrarily low.

• If we structure the financing of the pool as dedicated donations to a Capital Reserve with an approved plan to build an aquatics facility within certain parameters already on the books, then the pool gets built out of Lodge 88 Capital Funds, but we can use the additional funds for other capital improvements if we are under budget.

• If the ongoing capital contributions from new members (or existing members who later decide to join the pool) results in a violation of the Texas Insurance Code governing fraternals or would result in the loss of our total property tax exemption, we can make the capital contribution voluntary and encouraged (and perhaps offer a $100/year discount on annual dues to members choosing to make the capital contribution – or rather increase the annual dues for the pool by $100/year for those who cannot or choose not to make a capital contribution).

• When we recruit new members after the pool is built, we can then solicit a general Capital Reserve contribution even after the pool is fully built and operational. If a new member wishes to use the pool on a membership basis (through an annual pool dues arrangement), we can likely require, or at a bare minimum, highly encourage them to make a capital contribution to Lodge 88 in the amount that other families using the pool regularly have contributed. That gives us ongoing capital reserves to maintain, preserve, and improve the pool and all Lodge 88 facilities over the long-term, especially if we go through a period where pool membership dwindles or the pool needs major improvements.

One-Time Day-Use Fees for Members and Guests • Members not desiring or able to make a capital donation or purchase a bond – or who do not envision using the pool more than a few times per year and cannot justify the annual dues – can still use the pool for a daily rate. • Guests of members – whether the members are swim club members or not – can use the pool for an increased daily rate. This rate should be high enough to entice those guests enjoying the pool to join SPJST and the swim club, but low enough so as not to be cost-prohibitive for members to bring their guests.

• Example of a Day-Use Fee Schedule that Incentivizes Joining Lodge 88 and Allows Reasonable Access to Lodge 88 Members who choose not to join the Swim Club:

* SPJST Members (non-Swim Club or other lodges visiting): $15/day * Guests - Adult: $20/day * Guests - Children ages 5-18 years (Infants-4 years old FREE): $10/day * SPJST Youth Members (all lodges, children with policies): $ 5/day * Lodge 88 Youth Members (before or after a youth club meeting/event): Free * Lodge 88 Swim Club Member Families paying Annual Swim Dues: Free Pool Rentals for Member Parties and Events • If a member wishes to host a party in the pool and outdoor area, they can pay a flatfee that will cover admission for a group of guests, additional lifeguards as needed, tickets for the snack bar or perhaps use of the Annex or Main Kitchen, if desired. • Exclusive use of the pool should not be allowed for parties in general, except perhaps for major lodge-wide fraternal events (such as Splash Day and Homecoming) or

Swim Team (lap pool only). • This would be similar to rentals of the ballroom, the Red Room, the Annex, etc. • Party times should likely be limited to time blocks that are set and standard so

that all Swim Club members know there may be parties going on those days and at those times. • The ability to host parties is essential to keep ongoing community awareness about SPJST membership benefits and

11

opportunities, and will surely result in a steady stream of new members keeping Lodge 88 alive and relevant for generations to come. Community and Corporate Sponsorships • Soliciting community organizations and local companies to sponsor the SPJST Pool would both bring in additional income for capital reserves as well as promote goodwill, branding, and relevancy in the neighborhood. • Selling bricks to sponsors (maybe engraved tiles shaped like sea animals or something fun) is a tried and true way to get community support. Private organizations that contribute to society do this regularly – private or public schools, churches, non-profit charities, etc. This would be an easy sell in the Greater Heights area where most businesses are locally-owned and very committed to the neighborhood, but only if we do not have an exclusivity problem. VĚSTNÍK was baptized and a member of Czech Moravian Brethren Church in Caldwell and her Godparents were her Uncle Joe and Aunt Mary Hejl. She became a member of the SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor. Later, in Florida, she attended First United Methodist Church. The schools she attended in Burleson County, Texas, were Cooks Point - first, Red Hollow - second and fourth, San Antonio Prairie- third, New Tabor - fifth, Snook - sixth and seventh, and Caldwell - eighth to 10th. She could not go to school while married at that time, so later in Florida, she finished her high school education with a GED. Being a cashier at the Boedecker grocery store in Caldwell, Texas, was her first job, at age 15. Two years later, she met Raymond Joseph Marek, Sr. at Deanville Dance Hall. They were married on June 3, 1946, at Czech Moravian Brethren Church in Caldwell by Reverend Henry E. Beseda, Sr. They built their home on Route 1 at the west side of Caldwell. Irene became a housewife, gardener, farmed cotton in the Brazos area, and did ironing for others. In 1958, Ray’s job was transferred to Cape Canaveral, Florida. After moving, she had various jobs ironing and sewing. From 1968 to 1970, she enjoyed working at Montgomery Wards in Cocoa and Sears in Rockledge. From 1971 to 1973, she started working with micro-components at Radiation in Melbourne, at Harris in Palm Bay, then with soldering electronics at Westrex in Cocoa Beach. A change to work at an antique store in Sharpes was closer to home. In 1974, she did laundry at the Radisson Hotel in Cocoa Beach. She then became a lunchroom cook for the Brevard County School System. Being an assistant manager, she then delivered meals to two to

Wednesday, January 16, 2019 three other schools and retired in 1987. Irene enjoyed fishing, traveling, camping, and looking for shells on the beach. She was once on a women’s baseball team. She loved to bake and did pass on her favorite recipe of poppyseed kolaches. Playing dominos was a game that everyone in the family enjoyed together. She loved to grow flowers. Her favorites were sunflowers, amaryllis, and orchids. After living in Cocoa, Florida, for 50 years, Irene and Ray moved back to Bryan, Texas, in 2008. They reconnected with family and old friends in their hometown area. They were able to go to family reunions and made new friends, while living at St. Joseph’s Manor Assisted Living. Then after Ray passed away in 2014, Irene moved back to Florida to be closer to other family members. At Brookdale Senior Living, she enjoyed helping others, making new friends, and learning new games. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Raymond J. Marek, Sr.; son Raymond J. Hello,Vestnik Readers! It was really close, and I am looking forward to an even deeper playoff run for my senior

in Temple. RIGHT PHOTO: State King Nash and State Queen Grace at the Temple Christmas Parade. BELOW LEFT PHOTO: State King Nash, District Two Duchess Tynlee, and District Two Queen Brooke ride in the Taylor Christmas Parade. BELOW RIGHT: Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club in Grapevine.

year in the fall. I had a great year in the Rogers High School Band as well. I play in the percussion section, and we had an awesome marching season. I am looking forward to a fantastic concert season this spring. Since September, I have been keeping busy

working a part-time job, taking care of my show animals, which include pigs and turkeys, and keeping up with my

schoolwork. We celebrated Thanksgiving in November, and the Saturday after Thanksgiving, my brother Cade, my mom, my grandma, and I participated in the wreath laying at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. We have been doing this for about four or five years now. It is a somber time, but

Christmas holidays mean kolache-making and sausage-making time!
