This week’s Vestnik features more
than 200 Valentine’s Day greetings. Special thanks to our readers for participating in this tribute and sharing their messages with us. Here’s a bit of history on this very early and famous Valentine’s Day message:
Our thoughts and prayers are with Mortgage Loan Specialist Carol Wolf and her family. Carol’s brother, Ronnie Wolf of Holland, Texas, passed away on Monday, February 4. Ronnie was also the brother-in-law to State Fraternal Director Frank Horak. We send heartfelt sympathy to Carol, Frank, and all of their family.
Roses are red, Violets are blue. Sugar is sweet, and so are you!

This famous Valentine’s Day poem has many versions and can be traced back as far as 1590 by Sir Edmund Spenser from his epic The Faerie Queene:

She bath’d with roses red, and violets blew, And all the sweetest flowres, that in the forrest grew.
The rose is red, the violet’s blue, The honey’s sweet, and so are you. Victor Hugo was likely familiar with Spenser, but may not have known the English nursery rhyme when, in 1862, he published the novel Les Misérables. Hugo was a poet as well as a novelist, and within the text of the novel are many songs. One sung by the character Fantine contains this refrain, in the 1862 English translation:
We will publish three Věstníks per month in 2019. The publication dates and deadlines will be announced in advance in this column. Chairman Victorick shared this article with the Supreme Lodge. How to Fix a Failing Business Excerpts from Adam C. Uzialko Every failing business has a failing owner or management. Management is making poor decisions and remain unwilling to change their pattern of thinking. Common to encounter “every excuse in the world” from those failing. Eliminate excuses—costs too high, the economy is poor (This is the first step in repairing a struggling business.) Accept responsibility for poor decisions. Be open to change the old habits. When a business is struggling, it is easy to become obsessed with expenses and try to cut all spending. This is the wrong approach! Next step is to boost revenue rather than cut costs.
VĚSTNÍK Get new customers. Keep them as repeat customers. Incorporate new spend enhancements like rebranding and capturing more customers. Owners/management who are open to learning and rectifying past mistakes generally survive. Most failures are driven by simple outlooks or deep-seated emotions. Such as fear, ego, scarcity, time, circumstance. Biggest indication of failure by far is resistance to change. Let go of resistance and listen to the advice of others. This is the prerequisite to turn things around. The ultimate responsibility for success or failure lies with the owner/management and their ability to adapt to the needs of the business setting aside ego and challenge assumptions. Admit you are failing is the first step! BUDGET Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services Vajdak proceeded to review the 2020-2023 budget. DIRECTOR STAVINOHA Director Stavinoha shared in 2007, we had a surplus of $24 million. “In 2008, the surplus dropped to $13 million. We have gained our surplus back halfway in 10 years. Mr. Tobleman of our actuarial firm made a good explanation; we need to look at youth camp and youth achievement day. We should charge kids for one of those two events to keep the costs down. How important are these youth activities? They are costing SPJST $1,000 per kid. Director Rollwitz told us these are areas we need to cut. I really miss him.” DIRECTOR KASPAR Director Kaspar shared the last three months since the last Supreme Lodge meeting have been very different for her personally. She would like to extend sympathy to the families of Director Rollwitz and past Director Ahlstrom and also past State Field Representative Jerry Kucera. She sincerely thanked all for the kind words of sympathy, all who attended visitation, the rosary, and funeral service for her dad, Jerome Dorotik. She said her dad truly appreciated SPJST and loved going to State Youth Achievement Day for many summers. He was one of her biggest cheerleaders when she made her decision to run for district director. She appreciates everyone’s support and to keep in mind each and every day is a blessing and valuable. Director Kaspar welcomed Director Davis and offered congratulations to Director Bayer for 30 years of service and to Vice President Dixon for 10 years of service. Director Kaspar expressed sincere thankfulness that through the SPJST Foundation, it was tremendously rewarding for her to award $1,000 donations to each of the following

DIRECTOR BAYER Director Bayer thanked everyone for the wonderful 30-year celebration that he was given, and he congratulated Vice President Dixon for his 10 years of service. Lodge 18, Elgin: a good place to celebrate Yes! Lodge 18, Elgin is a good place to celebrate . . . and that is just what we did! Johnny and I planned to celebrate our 60th anniversary at the January dance. We made chicken salad, pickles, and cookies. Little did we know that our children planned to surprise us! They came early and decorated our tables, brought a cake, and invited family and friends to join us. How wonderful it is to have family and
VĚSTNÍK friends to help us celebrate! That is how the Elgin SPJST likes to see families and friends come and have a great time. The Czech Melody Masters provided great dancing music, and everyone there had a great time! Needed: Youth Leader We are still looking for a youth leader to help start our youth program again. We see other lodges with all the activity with the youth, and that is what Elgin needs. We need to keep this great hall going. We are told that we have the best dance floor in the state. Come check us out! We will need help in the next few months. Charles Wilson will have surgery, and we wish him the best. Johnny is unable to help as he has health issues himself, and at 83, it’s getting a little harder to do things that he did before. These golden years are not so golden. We have the Valentine dance on Sunday, February 10 with Dujka Brothers. On Sunday, February 17, we have a country band - One Ton Country. Lodge 88, Houston brings pool proposal to membership Over almost the past year, many of you may have seen in the Věstník a discussion about our plans to bring a pool back to Lodge 88, Houston. We cannot tell you how excited we are that we are bringing the final proposal for approval to our membership at our next meeting this Monday, February 18, 2019, at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall, located at 1435 Beall Street in Houston. In order for you to vote on the Swim Club proposal, it will be necessary for you to have your lodge dues paid and attend the meeting in person. If you have not paid your dues, please arrive early to pay your dues. Annual dues are $9 per adult member. Proxy voting is not permissible in a fraternal organization. For anyone who has been attending monthly meetings over the past year, they have been walked through the details of how the pool would be funded, constructed, and managed in line with the wishes of our membership. We certainly recognize that every member cannot make every meeting and that executing an initiative of this size is complex. To that extent, we wanted to offer this brief to help clarify how we got where we are today and why we are so excited about the pool project. Additionally, we hope to clarify a couple of the most frequently asked questions we have heard from those that have not been able to attend the meetings.
Happy Birthday, Andrew of Lodge 187 Round Rock!

O O O Presenting 2019 Officers and Trustees O O O SPJST Lodge 187, Round Rock
LEFT PHOTO: The 2019 officers of Lodge 187, Round Rock are, front, left to right, Financial Secretary Joann Oman, Vice President Janie Barron, Fraternal Activities Coordinator Carla Krenek. Back: Treasurer Rubie Volek, Secretary Deborah Rohlack,
As background, our lodge had a pool that was open until 1996 when ongoing maintenance and repair costs exceeded what membership was willing to pay to maintain it. Since before then, our membership has slowly been declining and there has been a stated desire to create a stronger connection with the neighborhood immediately surrounding the lodge hall, the Houston Heights. The neighborhood has been redeveloping over the past 10 to 20 years. New families are moving in and staying, and a strong connection could offer a path to long term viability for our lodge and its mission. Re-establishing the swim club was proposed at the February 2018 members’ meeting to attempt to bridge that gap while also offering more fraternal opportunities to our legacy members. A feasibility committee of seven long-time members was formed to assess viability of the project. The general membership made three requirements clear for any proposal from the feasibility committee: • The lodge should not take on debt to build a swim club • The people using the swim club should be the ones bearing the costs, not the membership at large • The swim club should not take up the whole back yard (~ 4 acres)
Lodge 187, Round Rock member Andrew Smith recently celebrated his 22nd birthday. Happy birthday, Andrew!
15
Working diligently over the past year within those confines, we have come to the proposal that we seek final approval on February 18. The two most common questions that we get related to the project are the costs to join and the fact that we are proposing a limited membership. We wanted to explain those elements here to hopefully clarify for everyone.
President Linda Johnson, and Reporter/Youth Leader Jennifer McCarthy. RIGHT PHOTO: Board members are, front, Johnnie Haak, left, and Rose Etheredge. Back: Tom Etheredge and Greg McCarthy.
First, with borrowing (rightfully) out of question to finance the pool, we needed to find a way to pay for construction. We decided to fund construction through membership deposits that are paid up front and refunded when a family decides to resign from the swim club and a replacement membership is sold. We came to the amount of $6,000 per family by estimating our construction costs with assistance from architects, engineers, pool builders, and other industry experts, adding on some extra for general lodge capital improvements and then dividing by the expected number of families the swim club can service based on its size. While $6,000 is certainly not an insignificant sum of money, its refundability makes it more like putting money in a safety deposit box than paying a large fee. We think this is a great solution where neither the lodge nor the members are forced to pay unnecessary interest. Additionally, members must pay annual dues equal to the annual operating budget divided by the number of families. This ensures that the people using the pool are in fact the ones that are paying for it. Second, why not just have membership be open to as many people as would sign up? Our rationale here was pretty simple: We wouldn’t sell more tickets to a dance than we knew would be allowed in based on city occupancy restrictions for our hall. Why would we do anything different for a pool? As mentioned above, the lodge membership (rightfully) did not want the swim club to take over the entire back yard. Members agreed to limit all construction to a rarely used 0.8 acre parcel of land in the southwest corner of our back yard. Our budget, once we make allowances for many improvements for all
lodge members’ benefit (general facility maintenance, an outdoor pavilion, and new playground for all) and the infrastructure around the pools (new pool house, decking, storm water detention, deck chairs, etc.) leaves us with enough capital for about 7,000 square feet of pools. We evaluated what we expect the city to allow in terms of occupancy for a pool that size and then used industry standards to estimate daily usage based on membership size. That model suggested that we could manage 410 families without running the risk of regularly turning paying families away from the swim club. If our actual usage ends up lower than what the model suggests, we can always add memberships later. But that’s something we won’t know until after our first summer of usage. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t still opportunities for members to use the pool without paying for an annual membership. Within the proposal, there will be times set aside for any member of our youth club to use the pool; times for water aerobics classes that are open to all members; day passes that can be earned through volunteering at the lodge; and at least one “Splash Day” when the pools will be open to all members. The past year has been a lot of hard work for huge groups of members that are excited about the future of Lodge 88. For the first time in over two decades, our membership increased in 2018. We know that change often draws attention but we are confident that this is a positive step towards the future of our lodge. Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point to lend helping hands at Home & Garden Show Lodge 191, Lufkin welcomes Glenn Lenderman for dance this Friday, Feb. 15 The January dance was great with “On the Double” playing. This is a husband and wife team that plays all kinds of music from the 50s to the present time. They did a little bit of country and a little bit of rock and roll, with something different in between. Thanks to all who stayed after the dance and helped stack the chairs and clean up. We still need volunteers to help each month so the same ones that do it every month will not have to do all of the work. If two couples could volunteer each month, once a year, it would help greatly. We are all about to get too old to do this. Dance This Friday Glenn Lenderman and Friends will be playing this month on Friday, February 15. So make plans to come out and listen and dance to some good music. As usual, please bring a covered dish or snack food for the food table. Thank you so very much! Dues Renewal The 2019 SPJST dues can be paid at the dance or mailed to SPJST Lodge 191, PO Box 3113, Lufkin, Texas 75903. They must be paid by March 1 to remain on the active list. The funeral was Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Please be in prayer for his family and friends, especially his good friend, Wilda Kay. I forgot to mention in the January newsletter about the toys collected for Salvation Army. They were delivered on Saturday morning in time for them to be given to the children. Thank you so very much to all who brought toys for this very special occasion. The next SPJST business meeting will be Monday, February 11 at 7 p.m. Members, please attend these meetings. Lodge 185, New Braunfels youth wins first place with “Preserving Ethnic Culture” essay In November, I entered the North Texas State Music Dep a r t m e n t ’s essay contest. My title was “ P re s e r v i n g Ethnic Culture.” I was surprised when they let me know that I had won first place for my age group (Level 1). They also sent me a beautiful plaque. Sincerely, Camila Cabrera age 9

Preserving Ethnic Culture Knowing about the past helps us understand how you got here and feel like you’re a part of the “family.” Let’s look at my family tree. There are Czechs, Germans, and Anglos. Then my fa-
ther was from Uruguay. He is Spanish and Italian. How do we keep our culture going? There are family reunions, all kinds of festivals, SPJST youth meetings, and many organizations. Family reunions are weird. There’s always lots of food like kolaches, sausage, sauerkraut, and lots of other stuff especially dessert. People kiss and hug because some have not seen each other for a while. You can learn information like a Gerick family member played in a Baca band and Great-Great-Great-Uncle August Ludwig played trombone in some German band. Don’t forgot about Silly Leroy. He is silly because he always brings stuff like squeaky chickens to award adult activity through the year. Festivals are all over Texas. Wurstfest is a celebration of sausage. There is lots of beer. On the sausage, they put on a lot of sauerkraut. They have rides there, too. There is a lot of polka music from many Czech and German bands. Other festivals include Westfest, Kolache Festival, German Fest, Maifest, Oktoberfest, Polka Festival, and many more. Czech language is being taught in many towns and online. I remember going to the Texas Czech Heritage and Culture Center in La Grange. We learned Czech words, played Czech bingo, and made apple strudel. At SPJST camp, we learned new Czech words and songs. I want to learn sign language and Czech. There are too many churches and organizations to mention. In conclusion, I think the Czechs and Germans have a lot of fun keeping their culture going. —SPJST—
Lodge 202, Jourdanton youth attends in District Seven skating outing
For our last SPJST outing, we went skating. I learned that I cannot skate. Although I had plenty of fun trying, there were many people who did way better than me. After falling for about five or
sit times, I decided to sit down. That was my favorite part. Sincerely, Katlyn Polasek, age 16 —SPJST—
Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth earns football ring
Dear Věstník, I had a wonderful opportunity to play football on a cold and rainy weekend on December 30, 2018, at Texas State Stadium in San Marcos. We played three games and won the championship 32-0. We also won a ring. Diego Valdez, age 13 —SPJST—
Lodge 202, Jourdanton youth participates in county livestock show; thanks SPJST
Recently, I participated in my last local county stock show at Atascosa County Livestock Show. I have showed goats for nine years and am going to miss it greatly. I would like to thank my local SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton for its support throughout the years. This year, I placed third and fourth with my
two goats, George and Benjamin, and placed second in showmanship. I also placed first in the skill-a-thon and won a buckle. Once again, I would like to say thank you to my lodge for all of its support. Kelly House, age 17 —SPJST—

St. Valentine’s Day in Prague You will not find a more romantic city in Europe to celebrate this day with the one you love - cobbled streets, golden spires, and quiet streets are perfect for a lover’s stroll. February 14 - The Czech nation has only been celebrating this holiday of love since the collapse of Communism rule in 1989. Before that, it was forbidden to embrace any “western” orientated celebrations.

Legend says the day was named after a Catholic martyr St. Valentine a priest during the third century in Rome. Apparently, Emperor Cladius lay down a law banning marriage for young men, believing that single soldiers made better soldiers with no wives or families to care about. Valentine defied Emperor Cladius and married young lovers in secret. After this was discovered, the Emperor ordered Valentine’s execution. ©1996–2011 Český rozhlas
