Dear Brian Vanicek and Directors, We would like to take this opportunity to thank SPJST for letting us enjoy a day in which we get to indulge in playing taroks. You can be assured that we appreciate SPJST hosting the annual SPJST State Tarok Tournament. As you are aware, we are trying to hold on to our heritage traditions. SPJST is instrumental in furthering these goals. A special thanks goes out to Frank Horak and Tammy Martinez, onsite hosts. They did a fantastic job of hosting the tournament. Both interpret the rules, make decisions, and best of all, cater a “super” lunch. We, the undersigned, applaud SPJST’s effort and support. Thank you for continuing our ancestor’s heritage. more, as I lost the count - and we did have a lot of happy winners! I just happened to be one of the winners, and I got a pair of valentine socks and a valentine scarf. I was delighted to receive both as I certainly enjoyed wearing them to the Ennis Sewing Circle on Valentine’s Day. Following, we had show-and-tell of what all we won which was a lot of fun. Winners of the 50/50 dollar game were Barbara Becknell and Mary Agnes Ward. Congratulations, ladies, and to all the winners of the door prizes! President Barbara asked if I had a report, and I was delighted to report on my visit to some of our long-time members who are on our home-bound list. My first visit was to Betty (Liska) Landsfeld who resides at the Willow Park Rehab Care Center. She was so delighted to see me, and we had lots of conversation about folks in Ennis as we are both from there. I had taken her a couple of bulletins from St. John Church that my sister, Georgie Morales, saves me as we both enjoy reading them and seeing all the names on the prayer list. Betty became 95 years young on January 13. My next visit was to see Camille (Bruzel) Bolcer who resides at the Vantage Assisted Living at City View. I had taken her and Betty some chocolates, and Camille was so glad to see me and the “chocolates.” She told me she was wondering who she could ask to buy her some since she was having a craving for chocolate! We had a lovely visit. I went to see her a week later to take her the obituary of her friend Marie Gill, who passed way and was a short-time member of the Friendship Club. She had seen the obituary in the Fort Worth Times and knew of her passing. I became acquainted with Marie when Camille asked me to pick her up to go to the Friendship Club a few times. Camille turned 102 years young on December 8. The Christmas card the Club mailed to Kathy Ormsbee came back as “no longer lives at Heartland Health Care Center.” Kathy used to always pick up the fried chicken for our lunch, and we always lovingly called her the “Chicken Lady.” If anyone knows where she is, please let us know as we do want to keep up with her. Then, I always mailed my Vestnik newsletter to Annie Whitsell, and the January issue came back “unable to deliver” on the same day as Kathy’s Christmas card. Annie always used to call and thank me for the newsletter, and I had tried to call her and always the answering machine came on so I would leave a message for her to call me. A few days later, I get this phone call, “Are you the person looking for Annie Whitsell?” It was her son Darrell returning

my call. Annie is now at the Ridgmar Medical Lodge, Room 104, at 6600 Lands End Court, Fort Worth, Texas 76116. Darrell said Annie’s eyesight is still bad, and she did have congestive heart failure, but is now doing much better. He suggested I stop in to see her as she would love to have some company. I will stop in for a visit soon. First, I’ll have to brush up on my Czech as Annie always wants to speak some Czech with me. Betty, Camille, and Darrell (Annie’s son) all asked me to thank the Club for the Christmas cards we had mailed them. Betty told me she would pick up the card each day and read all the names - saying, “I know this person,” or “This must be a new member as I don’t recognize the name.” Anyway, they all appreciated the Club for thinking of them. During the past month, I also visited with Frances Matthews and Lydia Alholm. Both are doing fine, and Lydia is having trouble deciding if she will go to WinStar in March or wait until April. I also visited with Adele Strand and her husband Harold. Adele is in rehab again, but is looking great. Lola Taylor reported on delivering our Christmas toys to Safe Haven. She suggested we rethink where we will want to make our donation of toys for next year. The Friendship Club has always supported St. Thomas Food Pantry for the months of April, August, and November. We discussed making a monetary donation to St. Vincent DePaul Society these months. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to February celebrants Shirley Martin and Linda Powell. May you have many more! February hostesses - Betty Carter and Linda Powell were thanked for their great service. The president reminded us that hostesses for March will be Carolyn Irby, Patti Williams, and Rose Ann Spann with Betty and Stanley Krenek picking up the fish. Since it will be Ash Wednesday, we will have fish. I’ve heard that Lisa’s fried fish is just as good as their fried chicken. Mary Ann Krivanek stated that she will distribute ashes during the meeting. Following the meeting, grace was said, and a great luncheon was enjoyed. Games were then played, and a good time was had by all. The next meeting will be Wednesday, March 6 - Ash Wednesday. Don’t forget your dish to complement fish to share with everyone. See you then! So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, almost everyone was in red or pink, and the 37 plus attending had a “sweet” time. There were gifts of valentine cards, flowers, and candy . . . candy . . . and more candy. We were slow in getting started and low in number, but by the time President Cathy opened the meeting, we were in our seats. Also of note, each month some of the men come to play dominoes. Janet Pappas brought her husband to make a foursome in the domino room. They come up for air when lunch is being served. The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, and President Cathy welcomed our visitor and new member Judy Martin. Janet Basham read a couple of poems given to her by Sandi Celusniak. Written by Henri Nouwen, they were titled “Memo on Joy” and “Special Thoughts.” Secretary Joan read the minutes (which were approved) and a thank you note from Lucy Martinez thanking us for cards and support over the loss of her mother.
The financial report was given by Margaret Laymance, and Marlene Bass gave the sunshine report. Cards were sent to Betty Loyd (improving after a hip replacement), Lydia Alholm (in rehab after a fall), Teresa Clay (surgery), Ann Cooksey (recently diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease), and Evelyn Scaff. (We are saddened to learn of Evelyn’s passing a couple of days prior to this submission.) The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 will miss her greatly, and we send our prayers to the family. We are late this year in sending donations to a select few organizations. Those that will be receiving funds are Lodge 92 and the Salvation Army. Funds going to the lodge will be utilized to obtain a new stage curtain. In March, our members are asked to bring toiletry items for the ladies at Safe Haven (Dollar Store items, samples we gain when traveling, or anything one thinks that would be appropriate.) We try to bring items almost every month to help those in need. In March, we will also celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day by pretending to be Irish and the wearing of the green. Lucy Martinez has agreed to make a beautiful basket to be auctioned off. Those baskets
are our way of putting a little cash into our kitty. She does beautiful work. February birthdays were celebrated. Shirley Martin, Claire Rooney, and Ray Terrell were serenaded with gusto. The rest were missing in action. A belated happy birthday and wishes for another grand year are sent to Linda Palmer, Brenda Lackey, Pauline Morbitzer, Judy Schlosser, and Bobby Shropshire. There were eight door prizes given away, after which show-and-tell took place. The blessing for lunch was given, and Lucy Martinez, Carolyn Irby, and Lola Taylor set a wonderful table. There was something from every item on the food chart. Good stuff! I know I have probably forgotten something important, but I hope not. Lenten season is fast approaching and remains to be a time for reflection and contemplation. Let’s always be thankful for what we have and share the love of our Savior in life’s journey. Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

Afterward, we went to Wendy’s for our monthly meeting and social. President nadace Woody Smith zahájil schůzi, přivítal řediele a hosty a složili jsme přísahu vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí, Rev.

Pak 1. prosince operní soubor Severotexaské university uvedl představení známé Janáčkovy opery s velkým úspěchem a menší skupina zpěváků pak předvedla úryvky z opery v College Station, Westu, Austinu, Temple a Dallasu, Tx.
přestěhování do Texasu. Předseda Sboru ředitelů James Sassín zahájil schůzi a hned jsme přikročili k práci, protože většina příspěvků byla čtena v předcházející schůzi. —SPJST—
[[3\\ = = =SoundCzech = = = Welcome to SoundCzech in which you can learn Czech phrases with the help of song lyrics. The song for this edition is by the Czech band Psí vojaci - Dog Soldiers called “Nechoď sama do tmy” - “Don’t walk in the dark by yourself.” The phrase is zmizet jako pára nad hrncem to disappear like steam over a boiling pot. Most obviously, one would disappear like steam over a boiling pot when trying to avoid awkward or unpleasant circumstances, or perhaps to avoid punishment. Zmizet means to disappear and zmizet jako pára nad hrncem — to disappear like steam over a boiling pot —suggests vanishing quickly and quietly before any one is the wiser. The English equivalent would be “to vanish into thin air” or “to vanish without a trace”. Another way of describing such a quick exit are these variations: zmizel jako dým – he disappeared like smoke; zmizel jako by se vypařil — he disappeared as if he had evaporated; or zmizel po anglicku — he made an English exit, a saying in Czech which means to leave without a word. If you’re fed up with being someplace or need to make a quick exit, you could also leave quickly, take your legs on your shoulders — vzít nohy na ramena; or vzít na paty — take to your

heels. Incidentally, one well-known dictionary of Czech phrases and idioms offers a different take on steam over a boiling pot that is rarely, maybe even never, used anymore: if you say someone is — like steam over a boiling pot — být jako pára nad hrncem. It means being weak like steam, so weak they would be unable to knock the froth or head off their beer. Another way of expressing such weakness is to say you’re slabá jako moucha —weak as a fly. But enough phrases for the week – it’s time to disappear. ~ Jan Velinger Source: http://www.radio.cz © 1996 - 2008
