hat a wonderful day it was in La Grange, Texas, at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center on Saturday, March 16. It was the dedication and grand opening of České Noviny Muzeum, or Czech Newspaper Museum, in the Czech Village. The museum is a tribute to early Czech newspapers. It was a very proud day for SPJST as the Věstník is prominently featured in the display among the other Czech newspapers. The Czech Newspaper Museum is a replica of an early print shop and tells the story of the many early Czech newspapers printed across Texas. A significant part of the history of the settlement of Czechs in Texas is the story of their newspapers. Their desire to communicate and stay abreast of the news resulted in the founding of newspapers in their communities and in their Czech language. This was not only about communicating the news, but also learning how to adapt to a lifestyle in a new country. Some papers were published for only a few years; however, others - like the Věstník - continued and eventually became newsletters or journals written in the English language. I encourage you to plan a visit to Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center to see the beautiful newspaper museum and all of the other areas of the Center - especially the Czech Village. And, a great day to plan a visit will be on Saturday, May 19! That is the rededication of SPJST Lodge19, Velehrad’s hall which was recently relocated to the Czech Village and is being restored. President Vanicek and I stepped in to the lodge building for a brief moment after the newspaper museum dedication. What a wonderful tribute this hall will be to all SPJST pioneers and to all lodge and fraternal
members. I can’t wait to see this hall come alive once again and be shared with visitors to TCHCC. Stay tuned for scenes from the Czech Newspaper Museum dedication and more details about the May 19 event. We all love to get “presents.” Winners of the 50/50 dollar game were Agnes Saldana and Libbie Vrla. We had lots of happy winners. Congratulation to all! Following the meeting, and since we had previously voted to have fish for Ash Wednesday - which didn’t happen, we had fried fish anyway, and it was greatly enjoyed. All the other food complemented fish so we had a great feast.

Hostesses for the day - Carolyn Irby and Patti Williams - were thanked. They did a super great job. Thanks also to Betty Krenek who always places the order for the chicken/fish a few days before our meetings. After lunch, games were played, and a good time was had by all. Other News Helen Skrasek enjoyed the visit from granddaughter Dr. Stephanie Myers of Knoxville, Tennessee, who came for a couple of days to visit in February. They enjoyed going to church together, eating Mexican food, and visiting Helen’s sister Adele Strand. Helen really enjoyed the visit. Now, Helen has a trip planned to Oklahoma City on March 25 to April 1, via Amtrak, to visit with grandson Ron Skrasek, Jr. and his eight-year-old daughter Milla from Portland, Oregon. They will be visiting Ron and LeAnn Skrasek, and Helen wants to get in on the visit. I had a fun day on Saturday as my sister Lil Kosarek and I went to Waco to attend the first birthday celebration of Lil’s great-grandson Charlie. He is so sweet and cute and is the son of Ben and Sara Kosarek. Now, I am looking forward to seeing Lil’s great-granddaughter Hazel who is the daughter of Melanie and Barrett Hall who live in Norman, Oklahoma, and was born on March 4. I talked with Lydia Alholm, and she was so excited to tell me all about her recent trip to WinStar. She said when she got on the bus at the Wellington, her bus seat had lots of balloons and a “welcome” sign. She already plans to go again around the end of March. She didn’t say if she was a big winner or not so I imagine not a really big winner as she would have told me. The next meeting will be Wednesday, April 3. We will have fried chicken so bring a side dish to share to complement chicken. I look forward to seeing everyone then. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 154, Fort Worth youth tries out for cheer squad
Dear Readers, I attended the District Seven Spring Meeting and helped with the flag ceremony. I painted an alligator rock and got second place. Fraternally yours, Colt Pruski, age 6 —SPJST—
I just had cheer tryouts. I am on the cheer squad for the 2018-2019 team, but I had to retry out for the 2019-2020 team. I was super scared! I was more confident then last year because I have experience. I was scared about messing up on the dance and about my jumps. I hurt my hamstring about a month before tryouts. I was so worried about my jumps because what if I couldn’t do them or if I hurt myself even more. I practiced all week on the dance, cheer, and chant.
I tried out . . . and I did amazing! I didn’t mess up, and I smiled the whole time. The judges looked happy, too! I was super sure I made the team. After I tried out, I waited outside with the other girls. About two hours later, they posted the results . . . I made the team! I was so happy, relieved, and excited. I can’t wait for next year’s cheer season. Reagan Hernandez age 13 —SPJST—
