aster is a very special time of year. For Christians, it is a time of renewed hope and a reminder of the greatest love. With Easter usually comes warmer weather, new growth in the land, beautiful flowers, and a refreshed spirit. For many, it symbolizes an awakening from a cold, long, dreary winter and a hope that warm, sunny days are on the way. Easter reminds us that hope must never be lost for as dark as the road may seem, there is always light at the end of it. Happy Easter! Veselé Velikonoce!

Save the Date - Sunday, May 19 at TCHCC in La Grange Grand Re-Opening of Lodge 19, Velehrad Hall SPJST members, family members, and their guests are cordially invited to participate in the Grand Re-Opening of the SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad lodge hall on the campus of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange. The event takes place on Sunday, May 19 in conjunction with TCHCC’s annual Slavnost - Mayfest: A Tribute to Czech-Texas Immigrants of All Years. Admission is $10 per person and includes the meal and all events. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. with the opening ceremony. A fried chicken dinner starts at 11:30 a.m. with music by the Texas Dutchmen from 12:30 until 5 p.m. The Grand Re-Opening of the SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall takes place at 1:30 p.m. and will be followed later that afternoon by the traditional May Pole dance. The Velehrad lodge hall was previously located on a two-acre tract in the northern part of Lavaca County in the Velehrad community. The area was settled in the 1850s and was named Velehrad or “Big Castle” for the Czech city of the same name. The Velehrad lodge hall was built in 1895 by Lodge Radhost 114 C.S.P.S (Cesko Slovanska Podporujici Spolek), which pre-dated the founding of SPJST in 1897. Not only did the lodge hall serve as a community center lodge room, it also served as a school. When the enrollment of the 1883 Velehrad School became too large, school was conducted in the Velehrad Lodge Hall. During the spring of 2006, the outside of the hall was restored by members of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Association. The SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall is in the final stages of restoration and will be the latest addition to the TCHCC Czech Village which will also be open for tours on May 19. “The SPJST Foundation expresses tremendous gratitude to those District Six members who rescued this historic SPJST charter lodge hall from obscurity in 2006,” says SPJST Foundation President Brian Vanicek. “Thanks to those caring individuals and the generous support of SPJST Foundation contributors, the Velehrad lodge hall will be a place where history comes to life and new memories are made.”

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center is located at 250 West Fairgrounds Road in La Grange, Texas. Stressed Out? You’re Not Alone! Do you know anyone who isn’t, at least at times, stressed out these days? Stress is a normal mental and physical reaction to the ever increasing demands of life. In looking at the causes of stress, remember that your brain comes hardwired with an alarm system for your protection. When your brain perceives a threat, it signals your body to release a burst of hormones to fuel your capacity for a response. This has been labeled the “fight-or-flight” response. Once the threat is gone, your body is meant to return to its normal, relaxed state. Unfortunately, the nonstop stress of modern life means that your alarm system rarely shuts off. That’s why stress management is so important. It gives you a wide range of tools to reset your system. Stress Relief from Laughter? The Doctor Says It’s No Joke When it comes to relieving stress, more giggles and guffaws are just what the doctor ordered. Although a good sense of humor can’t cure all ailments, data is mounting about the positive things laughter can do. Short-Term Benefits ✴ Stimulates many organs. Laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, which stimulates your heart, lungs, and others muscles. It increases the endorphins that are released by your brain. ✴ Activates your stress response. A rollicking laugh fires up and then cools down your stress response, and it can increase your heart rate and blood pressure. The result? A relaxed feeling. ✴ Soothes tension. Laughter can also stimulate circulation and aid muscle relaxation, both of which can help reduce some of the physical symptoms of stress. Long-Term Effects ✴ Laughter isn’t just a quick pick-meup, though. It’s also good for you over the long term. Laughter may: ✴ Improve your immune system. Negative thoughts manifest into chemical reactions that can affect your body by bringing more stress into your system and decreasing your immunity. In contrast, positive thoughts can actually release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially more serious illnesses.

The Committee presented four recommendations to the SPJST Supreme Lodge, which were approved. The recommendations are: • All communications from SPJST will include a request for the member’s email address. • To be added to the Operations Manual: We recommend that the Editor/Director of Communication serve as co-administrator for all new and pre-existing websites including but not limited to SPJST websites and all forms of social media. This applies to all SPJST Home Office, District, and Local Lodge communications. (This is not to manage your website and social media pages, it

is simply to step in, in the event of a crisis situation.) Any television, radio, print, or internet ad placed on behalf of a local lodge or sales agent must be approved by the office of the Vice President before placement. With a convention year coming up, finance areas will need to be discussed. SPJST Supreme Lodge members are the brain and heart of the organ-

The membership is asked to support their director in order to balance the budget. Elizabeth Holub (23) represents District Six on the Insurance Committee. She reported that with the 2020 Convention coming, the Insurance Committee will be setting meeting dates. SPJST Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services Roy Vajdak (88) stated it was a pleasure to come and visit. Mr. Vajdak stated that SPJST is financially strong. He said investments are receiving lower percentages than before. He said the routine audit by Texas Department of Insurance (which occurs every four to five years) lasted six months. It is now complete and SPJST was given a clean bill of health. He said we hope to be able to better economize the Vestnik in the future if more members convert to receiving it through electronic communication. With Convention 2020 coming, delegate elections will soon be held. Mr. Vajdak presented $4,000 to Treasurer Marjorie Treumer (30) for District Six hosting annual spring and fall meetings. DYC Lisa Bubela (30) was presented $750 for District Six Youth Achievement Day (YAD). Mr. Anton D. Machacek (8) was recognized as the 2018 District Six Fraternalist of the Year. Mr. Machacek volunteered his time and talents to renovate the original chairs from the Lodge 19, Velehrad hall. appreciated their commitment and dedication. She thanked Lodge 23 for hosting and wished everyone attending safe travels home. She reported that District Six has 13 active lodges. She appreciates the officers and members along with the youth keeping District Six vibrant. Carolina Covarrubia (30) is the District Six Regional General Agent. Director Kaspar stated that sales need to continue to increase to help SPJST to continue to grow and stay healthy. One area that has been adjusted is the director’s discretionary funds. Mrs. Kaspar (30) reported on the District Six Discretionary Fund donations for 2018. Donations were $500 to Six Mile Volunteer Fire Department; $400 to For the Kids; $300 to El Campo Volunteer Fire Department; $250 to Rose-Rich Softball Association; $300 to Food Bank of the Golden Crescent; $400 to Colorado County Fair Senior Day Program; $200 to Taiton Community Center Fall Festival Raffle; and $250 to Elks Lodge for Veterans’ needs (wheelchairs, ramps, etc.). The SPJST Foundation is an area where members are able to donate funds for use in areas that aid members. In 2017 and 2018, members made donations for Hurricane Harvey relief. District Six Director Kaspar (30) was able to present five fire departments with $1,000 each from the Foundation. The departments were East Bernard, Wharton, Bay City, Placedo, and Blessing. Mrs. Kaspar shared special moments with stories that came from the fire department and how they were impacted.

Director Kaspar (30) asked members to observe a quiet moment in memory of former District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom (32) who passed away in November 2018. The annual District Six business meeting will be held in the spring of each year. Under old business, Secretary Elizabeth Holub (23) provided copies of the minutes from the 2018 spring meeting for members to read. Helen Kelner (28) moved to approve the 2018 spring meeting minutes, seconded by Ardis Bacak (40). Motion passed. the fall meeting be discontinued; however, a district social should be held in lieu of the fall meeting. She suggested that for 2019, the District Six membership attend the dedication of the Lodge 19, Velehrad hall at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange on Sunday, May 19 as a fraternal social event. David Bucek (151) shared that moving the Velehrad hall was a vision of the late Honorary District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom (32), and Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange is a perfect home for the SPJST Velehrad hall. The event takes place on Sunday, May 19, 2019, in conjunction with TCHCC’s annual Slavnost Mayfest: A Tribute to Czech-Texas Immigrants of All Years. The area was settled in the 1850s and was named Velehrad or “Big Castle” for the Czech

city of the same name. The SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall is in the final stages of restoration and will be the latest additional to the TCHCC Czech Village which will also be open for tours on May 19. “The SPJST Foundation expresses tremendous gratitude to those District Six members who rescued this historic SPJST charter lodge hall from obscurity in 2006,” says SPJST Foundation President Brian Vanicek. “Thanks to those caring individuals and the generous support of SPJST Foundation contributors, the Velehrad lodge hall will be a place where history comes to life and new memories are made.” Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center is located at 250 West Fairgrounds Road in La Grange, Texas. —SPJST—

The First American Arbor Day The first American Arbor Day was originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska by J. Sterling Morton. On April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted in Nebraska. Birdsey Northrop of Connecticut was responsible for globalizing the idea when he visited Japan in 1883 and delivered his Arbor Day and Village Improvement message. In that same year, the American Forestry Association made Northrop the Chairman of the committee to campaign for Arbor Day nationwide. He also brought his enthusiasm for Arbor Day to Australia, Canada, and Europe.

lower urban temperatures, help to manage stormwater runoff, improve the health and well-being of residents, reduce crime, and bolster community pride. But between urbanization and increasingly destructive natural disasters, many cities and towns no longer have the trees they need. We must act to green communities worldwide and ensure that everyone has access to the benefits trees provide.

Now find your way through the maze.

Our Forest

Globally, approximately 18 million acres are lost each year — to raging wildfires, insects, disease, climate change, and more. The need for reforestation is dire, and we are committed to revitalizing forests across the country and around the globe — ensuring that they live on to provide life-sustaining benefits for future generations. Community trees are a critical element of urban life. In addition to providing natural beauty, these trees reduce air pollution,

2018 - 2019 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance Third Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2018 to May 2019 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2018-2019 youth year thus far. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2018 to May 2019. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities. What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district, and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards. Contest Dates June 1, 2018 to May 31, 2019 Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Fraternal Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Fraternal Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Fraternal Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Frater-

nal Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal. Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award. Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10 What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the

completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school. Dist Ldg Name Pts Mtgs Dist Ldg

A is for All Week Long: Czech Easter is a nearly week-long celebration that begins on Ugly Wednesday and continues through to the Easter Monday feast with numerous special days in between.

B is for Brunch: Easter brunch is quickly becoming a tradition in Prague with many hotels and restaurants offering special menus throughout the Easter weekend.

C is for Cantata: In Prague, the Bach Easter Cantata or mass at St. Nicholas cathedral commemorate the religious aspects of the holiday, forgotten under the communist regime when Easter was celebrated only as a rite of spring.

D is for Decorations: Aside from colored eggs and hand-made willow whips, Czechs also adorn trees and bushes with Easter regalia as part of a 19th-century European tradition originating in Germany and Austria.

G is for Good Friday: In Czech, Velký pátek, was not recognized as a national holiday under the communist regime, but it’s now officially back. Hello, four-day weekend.

H is for this traditional carol, sung by Czech children at Easter: Hody hody doprovody dejte vejce malovany Nedate-li malovany dejte aspon bily však Vam slepička snese jiny. Give me a colored egg, if you won’t give me a colored egg, give me a white one and get your hen to lay another.
