In 2018, more than 20,000 people turned out for the event — which I might add is still Continued on Page 18.

Members stood for a moment of silence for deceased members Royella Roessler and Michael Pausewang. May God bless their families in this time of sorrow. Fort Worth Friendship Club Members of the Friendship Club met on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at St. Thomas Church Parish Hall. President Barbara Becknell called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. We had no guests. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Secretary Laurie Dawson resigned as she has taken a job in teaching line dancing and is unable to make the meeting at 10:30 a.m.; however, she will come for lunch and play games. Libbie had written the minutes from the March meeting which were read by President Barbara, and she asked for any volunteers for a secretary. There were none, and hopefully, a new secretary will be appointed at the next meeting. Treasurer Margaret Sears reported on the financial position. Both the minutes and financial report were approved as presented. It was reported that Wes Caldwell, ar-
VĚSTNÍK borist, was supposed to make a presentation on what Indians do for trees; however, he was unable to attend. Hopefully, he will be available for next month. A discussion was held that whenever a guest comes and brings a dish to share, they should not have to pay the $5 for lunch. This was tabled until September when changes to the guidelines are voted on for the directory for the following year. Sunshine Person Darlene Tompkins reported on sending get well cards to Jimmy Spann, Rose Ann’s husband, who had surgery; to Lorraine Cross who has missed a few meetings due to illness; and to Tracy Horn, who fell and is now in Parkwood Care Center in Bedford. It was also reported that Carolyn Iry is in the hospital; Christine Strieff asked for prayers for her husband; Elizabeth Creamer reported her daughter Sally fell and crushed her pelvis and asked for prayers; and that Christina Azavedo is on the sick list. Get well
cards will be sent to all the above. It was further reported by Kathy Thome that Tracy Horn is slowly beginning to walk in taking small baby steps. A thinking of you card will be sent to Lois Smith who has been on the sick list and missing our meetings. It was reported that St. Thomas Church will be having its festival on May 15 and asked to borrow our bingo cards which we will loan to them. It was further reported they have prize drawing tickets for $5 each or six for $25 and that if anyone would like to donate a cake from the Friendship Club to be used for the cake walk, it would be greatly appreciated. April is a designated month in which we voted to support St. Vincent DePaul Society since St. Thomas Food Pantry closed. A total of $265 was collected for this very worthy cause. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to April celebrants - Kathy Thome, Patti Williams, Marie Keller, Rose Ann Spann, and Lydia Alholm.
May all of you have many more. Our theme was Easter, and we did have eight ladies who wore their Easter bonnets. By vote taken, Betty Carter was the winner and was given a prize a ceramic bunny. Several of the tables carried out the Easter theme as ladies sitting at the various tables decorated their own tables. Everything looked lovely. The first winner of the 50/50 dollar game was Linda Powell with Betty Carter being the winner of the second game. Congratulations, ladies! Hostesses Anna Marie Moncrief, Sharon Connelly, and Lola Taylor with Libbie picking up the chicken were thanked. Anna Marie, Sharron, and Lola did a great job. Hostesses for May will be Jo Ann Wilcox, Darlene Tompkins, and Marie Keller. The theme will be floral/spring. Following the meeting, grace was said, and a great fried chicken lunch with all the side dishes and desserts were enjoyed. Everyone did enjoy Sharron’s fresh apple cake.

Other News Lydia Alholm asked that I make a correction this month. It seems she was a jackpot winner on her first trip back to WinStar in early March following breaking her leg in late October. She made two trips in March and one trip so far in April. She always says she is a big winner. Congratulations! Sokol Fort Worth had an exclusive event for its members on April 7. Since Lydia Alholm is the oldest Sokol member and has the longest tenure in Sokol membership years, the event was a surprise birthday Czech luncheon of pork, sauerkraut, and dumplings with kolaches, and birthday cake in her honor. Lydia will be 99 years young on April 30. Her parents were two of Sokol’s founding members. Lydia, her husband Roy, and her parents sponsored the Sokol/SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth Easter picnics down on the farm for many years. The event was a complete surprise to Lydia, and she asked me to thank all who attended, the ones who planned the event, the decorators, caterer, and anyone who played a part in this big surprise. She thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, and she especially enjoyed the fellowship. Last Friday, I needed to go to the Ridgmar area so I stopped in to visit
with Annie Whitsell. I have to admit that I didn’t recognize her at first until she spoke, and I knew that voice. She asked about all the oldtimers and even about Kathy Ormsbee, the lady who always picked up our chicken for lunch. I was amazed at her memory. She wanted to know if I ever see Camille Bolcer as they both went to St. Paul’s Church. I told her I would stop in to see Camille as she is in an assisted living nearby. I asked Annie if someone delivers communion to her as she delivered communion to others for years. She said someone brings it to her on Sunday and again on Wednesday. She said all she does every day is to pray the rosary over and over. Her eyesight is bad. She said she isn’t able to get up out of bed, but other than that, she is fine. I have to say that I enjoyed our visit. Annie will be 95 years young on April 18. On Sunday, I ran over to Willow Park to see Betty Landsfeld. She is doing fine, still keeps up with everyone in Ennis, and we had a good visit. Betty reminded me that she became 95 years young in January. On my way home, I stopped by The Vantage at Cityview to see Camille Bolcer to report on Annie Whitsell. She was so glad to hear all about Annie especially that someone takes her commun-
ion twice a week. Camille is 102 years young. When I become 95 or older, I hope my memory is as good as Annie’s, Betty’s, and Camille’s. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 1. Best wishes to everyone for a happy Easter. So Until, Keep Smiling, Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

The Velehrad lodge hall was previously located on a two-acre tract in the northern part of Lavaca County in the Velehrad community. The area was settled in the 1850s and was named Velehrad or “Big Castle” for the Czech city of the same name. The Velehrad lodge hall was built in 1895 by Lodge Radhost 114 C.S.P.S (Cesko Slovanska Podporujici Spolek), which pre-dated the founding of SPJST in 1897. Not only did the lodge hall serve as a community center lodge room, it also served as a school. When the enrollment of the 1883 Velehrad School became too large, school was conducted in the Velehrad Lodge Hall. During the spring of 2006, the outside of the hall was restored by members of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Association. The SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall is in the final stages of restoration and will be the latest additional to the TCHCC Czech Village which will also be open for tours on

Lydia Faust Continued from Page 1. free admission! September 14, 2019 will mark 35th anniversary of the Kolache Festival. Well know this: Lydia has been at the heart of that event from Day 1 — and before! In fact, she baked the first kolaches that were sold at the Harvest Bake-Off which led to the organization of the Kolache Festival . . . She was a charter member of the Kolache Festival and is still going strong with that annual celebration. And, again from Day 1, Lydia has co-chaired the Kolache Bake Show . . . which is a tremendous task . . . and includes the sonication of sponsors and judges, defining the categories of competition and judging criteria, set up for the event, the instruction of judges, and awards presentation. An aside here: In 1989 — under House Concurrent Resolution No. 171 — the 71st Texas Legislature designated Caldwell the official “Kolache Capitol of the State of Texas!” I’ve got to say, too, Miss Lydia and her husband — the late Mr. Moody Faust — were crowned Kolache Queen and King in 1999 . . . We lost Mr. Faust in 2012 . . . But you know, Lydia and Moody had 59 wonderful years together and produced quite a family. Her three children are Bruce Faust, who married Tammy Kouba, who live in Snook, and between the two of them, they have seven children and four grandchildren; James Faust, who lives in Snook, and he has three children; and daughter Melinda Faust Wilson and her husband Mike, who lives in Leona where they have three children and two grandchildren. I mentioned earlier that Lydia makes her home in Snook. I’m proud to say that Lydia is a 66-year member and a longtime volunteer at SPJST Lodge 9, Snook. In fact, she helped to organize the lodge’s first youth club which is now the largest SPJST Youth Club in District One! In addition to meeting all of the prescribed responsibilities of an SPJST youth leader, Lydia also made it her job to share her Czech heritage with

youth club members. She taught the Czech language to her youth club members, and she also taught them how to bake kolaches! For the past 18 years, Miss Lydia has been holding kolache-baking and noodle-making workshops for SPJST as well as 4-H youngsters in her community. I mention 4-H. Lydia also organized the 4-H club in her community where she was the leader for 18 years during which time she helped so many young people with their projects, record books, and scholarship applications. This is in addition to supporting the youth of the community in so many of their other activities including fundraising. A member of the Snook Brethren Church, Lydia taught Sunday School classes for several yards and has held multiple offices within the Christian Sisters group as well as multiple church committees on the local and state level. And, like all good parishioners, Lydia contributes her time and energy to all of the church barbecues and turkey and dressing suppers . . . and helping at vacation Bible school! Something else church-related I should mention . . . I love church revivals, and so does Lydia. I don’t know how far back this goes; however, she has been instrumental in helping to organize her community’s interfaith revivals bringing together as many as five different congregations.
That’s inspiring! Finally, Lydia has been involved with the Extension Education Association (EEA) — you may know it better as Home Demonstration — for 45 years — promoting and presenting programs to educate families in ways that lead to better living . . . Through the Extension Education Association, Lydia has volunteered her time at the county fair registering fair entries and serving as a judge in many categories. Along the way, she has chaired a multitude of extension committees on the local, county, and district levels. I could go on: Lydia is also a member of Texas Czech Genealogical Society and Snook Lions Club . . . Why does she do it? “For the love of her community,” she says. She loves doing her best to help others . . . —SPJST—

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club had a busy weekend. On Friday night, April 12, 2019, there was egg dyeing and cupcake decorating for the youth. Even some parents enjoyed it. I am excited to announce that 160 people attended the Easter party on Saturday, April 13. Everyone enjoyed the egg hunt, Easter Bunny, face painting, balloon twisting, and dancing. It was nice to see all the kids have a great time with big smiles on their faces. Even when some of the parents were ready to leave,
many of the kids did not want to leave yet. I want to thank all the children who donated their plastic eggs in exchange for a bag of candy. Thank you also to all the volunteers who helped me with this whole experience. I hope to see more of you all at our next youth party. —Vanessa Guerrero, Youth Leader —SPJST—

monetary contributions countless volunteer hours, and numerous in-kind donations from people living in all parts of Texas, some from other states, as well as grants from the Czech Foreign Ministry. All contributors can feel pride in building a Czech Center for future generations to enjoy. Center News TCHCC held a dedication ceremony of the Czech Newspapers Museum in the Czech Village on Saturday, March 16. For the fifth year in a row, TCHCC was voted Best Museum in Fayette County by readers of the Fayette County Record. Now showing in the Museum through November 15: Made in Czechoslovakia - Handcrafted wooden, fabric, and glass items on display. Mark your calendars for Heritage Fest and Muziky on October 18 and 19. Latest project – the center is raising money to move the Czech Brethren Church near Shiner to the TCHCC grounds. The steeple and roof will have to be removed for moving. The goal is to raise $80,000. Visit the website or Facebook page to donate. Thanks to TCHCC supporters, the center was able to raise $50,000 to meet a challenge grant announced by
VĚSTNÍK William Melnar late last year, in which he matched the amount raised. William and his wife, Betty, established an Endowment Fund for the center several years ago with the intention to help pay for the future operation of TCHCC. Donations can still be made to the fund. Perhaps the center’s most popular calendar is the 2019 calendar featuring Favorite Czech Recipes & Chefs. Find recipes of kolace, strudels, liver dumplings, sauerkraut, chicken, Czech traditionals, and more! Visit the website to order yours. Better yet, become a member of the center and get the calendar as a thank-you gift. —SPJST—

ABC of Czech

Welcome to the ABC of Czech. We’ll look at pasta in Czech cuisine. If you have so far associated pasta only with Italy, you have a chance to find out about homegrown Czech pasta těstoviny. First of all, one should try to avoid using the word “pasta” in Czech restaurants because the waiter might bring you toothpaste instead - as the general word is těstoviny which comes from the word testo, meaning dough. Even before the market here was flooded with real Italian products, people could buy Czech versions of it, complete with Czech names. Forget about fusilli or rotini - they are traditionally known as vřetýnka - or little spindles in Czech. No one knows about conchiglie, but everybody likes mušličky - little mussels. One of the most widely available shapes of pasta in the past dec-
ades were elbow macaroni - or kolínka meaning little knees. The type of pasta known worldwide as penne, is commonly called - sekané potrubí - or chopped pipes in this country. Rosa marina was always sold under the name těstovinová rýže, or pasta rice. Most of these types of pasta were eaten as a side dish in the past decades rather than a meal in its own right. On to soup pasta: Stelle are hvězdičky or little stars, alphabets are písmenka or

little letters; ‘letter soup’ - písmenková polévka - is certainly very popular with kids. With some types of pasta, Czechs just mispronounce the name to better suit their mouths. For example, spaghetti becomes - špagety - and macaroni becomes makaróny. But there are types of pasta that seem to have always been prepared in this country. One is ordinary noodles or nudle. thicken meat or vegetable broths. Thicker versions are eaten with ground poppy seeds, sugar, and butter - nudle s mákem. I remember my grandmother rolling out the dough, cutting the noodles, then drying them. Cut into little squares, they are called fleky or flíčky. They are used either as soup pasta or to make a typical Czech meal known as šunkofleky. It is made of cubed smoked meat, cooked fleky and eggs, and it’s all baked in an oven. dumplings made of flour and eggs that are eaten with meat or in clear soups. Although the name sounds similar to the Italian gnocchi, the Czech term comes directly from German. We should also mention the Slovak potato dumplings halušky - which are even more similar to gnocchi and are usually eaten with bacon and Slovak sheep cheese.
But, now, we are out of time. Thanks for joining us, and till next time - dobrou chuť. S bohem. ~ Pavla Horáková Radio Prague
