Coming Soon: SPJST’s New Fraternal Line-Up! A

t its April meeting, Supreme Lodge members voted to launch SPJST’s exciting new line-up of three web-based fraternal benefit options. It’s an inviting set of offerings that will extend benefits in three key areas including: • A practical web-based program to control your healthcare costs; • A web-based program for travel insurance for travelers of all ages and occupations; and • A website operated by Amazon with the same products, prices and shopping features as Amazon.com which donates

0.5 percent of the purchase price to the SPJST Foundation. “I’m thrilled and looking forward to delivering these web-based benefits to SPJST members,” says SPJST President Brian Vanicek. “In each case, we will be introducing partnerships with industry leaders that complement SPJST’s longstanding mission and values. These three programs are wonderful in that they possess the potential to provide SPJST members and in some cases — their ex-

tended relationships — with services that SPJST could not have done alone. “Additionally, the revenue stream generated by these affiliations could go a long way towards supporting the growth and continued success of SPJST’s fraternal program.” The Fraternal Department will be working with the SPJST Communication Department closely in the coming days and weeks to begin introducing and integrating the new web-based fraternal options.

We will begin profiling each of the benefits, starting with Freshbenies in next week’s May 22 Vestnik. Freshbenies offers practical tools to control your healthcare (and more) in one easy membership - allowing you to control your dime, your time, and your peace of mind. Watch your Vestnik and SPJST social media to learn how you can save hundreds to thousands of dollars on your family’s healthcare (and more)! —SPJST—

ue to the heavy rains (7-plus inches over two days) that soaked Seaton, Texas, we rescheduled the SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration to Saturday, May 18 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. The spectator parking area was not feasible for use on May 4 due to the soggy ground conditions. This is the 14th car show, and thankfully, the weather has been nice for the past 13 years. We hope that the field where the spectators park will be dry by this Saturday so we can continue with the event. Please visit spjstcarshow.com and SPJST’s Facebook page for the latest information. The day will include many activities and beautiful cars on display. Vendors booths are open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Music starts at 10 a.m. Beseda dancers and Miss Texas will perform during a ceremony that begins at 1:45 p.m. The silent auction - with lots of fantastic items - closes at 1:45 p.m. Car show awards are at 2:30 p.m. Thanks to our friends at Farm Equipment Service, Inc. in Temple, we will be giving away a Bad Boy MZ Magnum Zero-Turn Mower through a drawing benefitting the SPJST Foundation. The mower will be displayed at the car show. Tickets will be available there - or give us a call at the Home Office 254-773-1575 for more information on tickets. Once again, please visit spjstcarshow.com and SPJST’s Facebook page for the latest information and updates on the car show event.

I apologize if I offended anyone, but I do not apologize for my passion for doing what is best for SPJST. We must all remember we are here to serve and not to be served. There is one thing which I have stood for and that is doing what is right, truthful, and transparent. Our position should never be to take an issue and only have one solution or approach only one side. Individuals should have the right to voice their objections within reason and cause no harm to our lodges or the organization. I will continue to be open-minded and earn the trust and respect of our members. We are the servant of our members, and we must never say or do anything which would cause a loss of respect for anyone. It is up to us to continue to be transparent in the things we do and to let everyone know we are doing what is best for SPJST. We cannot create controversy or perceptions which are inaccurate. We must be diligent and honest in everything we do. I pray we can continue to grow SPJST in a way that will bring pride and respect for what we stand for. If we have done this, we have something to be proud of. Don’t be afraid to apologize for mistakes and make sure we do the right things. In our eyes, SPJST must be number one, and let no one put this aside. We as officers and directors must always remember, we are here to serve and expect nothing else.”

Grand Re-Dedication of Lodge 19, Velehrad Hall this Sunday, May 19 at TCHCC in La Grange By Brian Vanicek SPJST President SPJST members, family members, and their guests are cordially invited to participate in the Grand Re-Dedication of the SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad lodge hall on the campus of Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange. The event takes place this Sunday, May 19 in conjunction with TCHCC’s annual Slavnost - Mayfest: A Tribute to Czech-Texas Immigrants of All Years. Admission is $10 per person and includes the meal and all events. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. with the opening ceremony. A fried chicken dinner starts at 11:30 a.m. with music by the Texas Dutchmen from 12:30 until 5 p.m. The Grand Re-Dedication of the SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall takes place at 1:30 p.m. and will be followed

VĚSTNÍK later that afternoon by the traditional May Pole dance. Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center is located at 250 West Fairgrounds Road in La Grange, Texas. The Velehrad lodge hall was previously located on a two-acre tract in the northern part of Lavaca County in the Velehrad community. The area was settled in the 1850s and was named Velehrad or “Big Castle” for the Czech city of the same name. The Velehrad lodge hall was built in 1895 by Lodge Radhost 114 C.S.P.S (Cesko Slovanska Podporujici Spolek), which pre-dated the founding of SPJST in 1897. Not only did the lodge hall serve as a community center lodge room, it also served as a school. When the enrollment of the 1883 Velehrad School became too large, school was conducted in the Velehrad Lodge Hall. During the spring of 2006, the outside of the hall was restored by members of SPJST District Six Cemetery Association. The SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall is in the final stages of restoration and

will be the latest addition to the TCHCC Czech Village which will also be open for tours on May 19. A tremendous amount of gratitude goes out to those District Six members who rescued this historic SPJST charter lodge hall from obscurity in 2006. Thanks to those caring individuals and the generous support of SPJST Foundation contributors, the Velehrad lodge hall will be a place where history comes to life and new memories are made. While May 19 will certainly be a time of celebration, I see the restoration of the SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad lodge hall as being part of a larger and ongoing effort. Whereas many of the physical elements of the lodge hall have been redressed: change of location, structural stabilization, interior as well as exterior reparations and painting, and furnishings restored, the grand re-dedication on May 19 sets the stage for the next phase of the reclamation process — and that is sharing the “Velehrad story” with others. Even as the Velehrad story is replete with

specific names, dates, and places, it is a story of immigration, determination, and assimilation — a story that each of us as pioneer descendants and SPJST members have in common. A tremendous amount of background research as it relates to Velehrad — the community, the lodge, and the cemetery — has already been done thanks to the devoted research overseen and conducted by Janie Bucek of Lodge 151, Wharton. Janie and her husband, David, were closely involved early on with the efforts to restore the lodge hall as well as the efforts which resulted in Texas state historical markers for the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery which is adjacent to the hall’s former location. There are lessons to be learned from the past and the Velehrad story. The more we learn from the past and by discovering how things were and how they evolved, the better-positioned we will be to rediscover the strengths that define SPJST as an institution and — for many families — a part of life. That’s one of the things that I find most exciting about the Velehrad project. It isn’t just about fixing up an old building: It’s about remembering where we come from, who we are as a society, and where we are headed. I hope to see a lot of you in La Grange on May 19! —SPJST—

He remembers his family not having electricity until he was about 17 years of age Alton loves gardening, ranching, fishing, and just riding around on his cart with his best friend LeRoy, his dog. Alton also loves to dance. Again, we congratulate Brother Alton M. Lange on attaining the grand age of 96. Ripper got his uniform and, as a crew member on the Battleship Colorado, saw action in 10 sorties in the South Pacific. He relates his frightening and gratifying experiences in Chapter 21. In Chapter 22, Dennis B. Rudloff recollects an event during his first bombing mission to Germany. “One of our 500pound bombs got hung up on a torn up shackle in the bomb bay, so its nose was hanging out of the ship. It was ready to go off at any second. The bombardier and I rushed through the open bomb doors to fix the problem. We had to stand on a six-inch wide catwalk, 2,000 feet above the ground. We couldn’t wear a parachute because of a lack of room on the catwalk, although we had to wear our oxygen bottles, which made it even worse. The weather was plenty cold,

The radio operator said ice was forming on my eyebrows and chin, but I was still sweating to beat heck . . . ” The memories that Thomas has gathered from veterans and female civilians reflect the courage and determination that defined ‘The Greatest Generation.’ These stories are not limited to veterans on the front lines, but also include those serving in support roles. Many of the veterans profiled were farm boys of Czech and German descent who had never traveled further than the county seat of La Grange. Some were called upon to put their lives on the line time after time while others served stateside in support roles. Nine women on the home front also shared their memories. Each of these patriots, in his or her way, helped the Allies win the war. Fewer than 500,000 of the 16 million Americans who served their country in

Lodge 185 New Braunfels youth wins hamster Dear Vestnik Readers, Every year, my school holds “The Great Hamster Giveaway” during Catholic Schools Week. The mayor of Seguin comes to our school and draws the names of several lucky students that get to take a hamster home. It is all part of a science experiment where the winners report on the progress of their hamsters for the rest of the school year. This year, I was one of the lucky winners. I am happy to report that hamster Elizabeth is doing well! Sincerely, Megan Ohnheiser, age 12 —SPJST—

hen you get off a plane, a train, a bus, what first greets you is signs, signs, and more signs. True, some of them are in English, or other languages, too, but in smaller towns at least, you’ll have to rely on your knowledge of Czech. We’re going to explain at least some of the most common signs. As you get off a plane, you’ll probably look for Passport Control or pasová kontrola and Customs or Celní kontrola. After you pass those, you’ll be looking for the Exit sign, which is východ. This word can be easily mistaken for its

exact opposite vchod which means entrance. Now repeat them once again V ý c h o d means exit and vchod is entrance. If you want to know which way to run in an emergency, look for the sign Nouzový východ or Emergency Exit. Another two signs which might sound and look frustratingly similar to a foreign visitor are Otevženo - Open and Zavženo - Closed. If you’re not 100 percent sure if a place is open or closed, you should try the door. In that case, you’ll want to

Muži and Ženy in public toilets. Well, Muži - Men and Ženy - women. There is another pair which is also used frequently - páni and dámy. The first word, páni, stands for gentlemen, and dámy for ladies. And that’s all for today’s edition, but the ABC of Czech will have more useful vocabulary and phrases next time!

know whether you push or pull it open. In Czech, the signs read sem, which actually means here and tells you to pull the door towards you, and the other is tam, meaning there, in which case you have to push the door to open it. In many public places, you’ll find the sign Zákaz koužení which means No Smoking. If a sign reads Zákaz vstupu, it means No Entry. There is another pair of signs, which could, at times, be really important. Unless there are internationally comprehensible symbols on the doors, you simply have to be able to tell between the words
