SPJST shares a fresh new way to help control your healthcare!
With medical rates and out-ofpocket costs skyrocketing, Americans need help. SPJST is excited to introduce a new solution called freshbenies! In a nutshell: freshbenies gives you practical tools to control your healthcare (and more) . . . in one easy membership. freshbenies saves you $$$ This program helps save hundreds to thousands on your family’s healthcare costs for just $18/month (plus, a one-time $15 application fee). This isn’t insurance and doesn’t replace insurance, but it’s great for those with or without insurance. freshbenies is a membership program - after you register and receive your member packet, you’ll have full access to these great services for your family (at no additional cost) through the member portal or app . . .
• Call a doctor 24/7 and get a prescription written, if medically necessary. This can save doctor, urgent care, and emergency room visits. • Email specialists for personalized and reliable medical advice. No more searching WebMD and Google for answers. • Access expert health advisors who help navigate “the system” including medical billing issues and help finding prices before you need a medical procedure. • Save 10 to 85 percent (average 46 percent) on prescriptions. This gives another option to your health plan. • Eight additional best-in-class savContinued on Page 4.

I send a special thanks to Helmer’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren for making Helmer’s birthday wish come true.” Helmer is pictured above celebrating his 95th birthday with his 20 great-grandchildren - Beau David Reinach, Kayla Marie Noren, Kallie Elaine Noren, Natalie Hope Sawyer, Garrison Wesley Sawyer, Nathan Michael Sawyer, James Thomas Sawyer, Elizabeth Grace Sawyer, Jeremiah Woodrow Morris, Elijah Jarrels Morris, Peter David Morris, John Ryder Berckenhoff, Eleanora Leigh Berckenhoff, Sophia Elizabeth Berckenhoff, Aislyn Nicole Wampler, Alexa Brielle Wampler, Matthew Hayden Cramer, Westen Grant Cramer, Jonah Michael Wampler, and Aurora Alamara Elam.

T
he rain is winning . . . at least for now. We rescheduled the May 4 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration to May 18 after heavy rains soaked Seaton, Texas, on May 2 and 3. We were really hoping that the grounds would dry by May 18, but another inch fell - on top of the seven or so that had already fallen - plus 100 percent rain was predicted for May 18. The event planning team met earlier in the week to talk about the options. A local weatherman discussed the El Niño situation with us. He mentioned that the rains may continue into June. So instead of setting a June date and running the risk of rescheduling once again, the team decided to plan the event for Saturday, October 5, 2019. We apologize for any inconvenience. We have hosted 13 years of shows with perfect or near-perfect weather. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Heartfelt Sympathy We send sincere sympathy to Claims Specialist Margaret Campbell and her family - including 2018-2019 SPJST State King Nash Campbell. Margaret’s mother (Nash’s greatgrandmother) Cecilia Elizabeth Williamson, age 95, passed away on May 9, 2019. Her funeral service was Tuesday, May 14 at St. James Catholic Church in Gonzales with interment at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Gonzales.
Saturday, October 5 Please save the date - Saturday, October 5 - and plan to be in Seaton, Texas - seven miles east of Temple on Highway 53. We will kick off Czech Heritage Month in Texas in a big way! Even more fun activities will now be part of the event. Invite your family and friends. Visit spjstcarshow.com and SPJST’s Facebook page for the latest information on the event, and stay tuned to the Vestnik.

Strategic planning for your lodge: There’s no time like the present There are dreamers and there are planners; the planners make their dreams come true. —Edwin Louis Cole One of the items presented under my new business during the April Supreme Lodge meeting was the broad topic, “Reinventing SPJST’s Fraternal Future.” As a preamble to this discussion, statistical data was shared which reflected a general decline in member engagement in various nationwide civic organizations. Groups like Rotary International, the Elks, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts have all suffered from declining membership in recent years. SPJST recognizes the importance of fielding a fraternal program that is relevant and in touch with the lives of its members. Whereas some lodges are experiencing a resurgence in member participation others have been less fortunate. There are reasons for this: While it is certainly possible for a lodge to experience a level of success without a plan, those lodges whose members have invested the time and resources into developing a specific strategy and plan can look forward to achieving success at a much quicker pace. According to Wikepedia, “Strategic planning is an organization’s process of defining its strategy or direction and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital or people.” A strategic plan can be your lodge’s blueprint for carrying out its mission. The process of strategic
VĚSTNÍK planning is a critically important element of successful lodge management. Volumes have been written on the topic and any bookstore with a strong business and management section will have more than a few feet of shelf space devoted to the subject. As daunting as that may sound, please don’t let that stop you! Amazingly, for about the time that it takes to cook dinner, your lodge can lay the groundwork for a meaningful strategic plan. Brainstorming: A Great Place to Start A great place to start is by conducting a simple — and fun — brainstorming session that helps to answer, “What is my lodge doing to make a positive difference for its members and for the community?” And, please know, with a little bit of advance notice, I’d be more than happy to lend a hand with the process. With just a little preparation, it is possible to conduct this three-step exercise in an hour or less! In the end, the information that is collected can be useful in constructing a strategic plan for the lodge. What you will need: One flip chart. Marker. Tape. Egg timer. Tickets. Participation prizes. This makes it fun! Step One: For the first seven minutes, encourage everyone assembled to identify all of the positive factors that the lodge has working in its favor. And don’t be picky. If somebody has an idea, write it down and give them a ticket. If they have two ideas, that’s good for two tickets — and so on. The idea is to get people to express themselves and identify all of the lodge’s positive attributes. Step Two: For the next seven minutes, encourage everyone assembled to identify the negative factors which may be keeping the lodge from achieving its full potential. Just as in Step One, this is also a rapid-fire process. It keeps people coming up with ideas but does not permit them to dwell excessively on negative items. And — just as in Step One — participants receive a ticket for each idea that is contributed.
Step Three: At this point, the flip chart pages are taped to the wall. Positives on one side; negatives on the other. With the remaining time that is allowed — at least 30 minutes — the facilitator alternates between the positive and negative lists, with the simple directive, “What can we — as a lodge — to accentuate the positives and what can we do to eliminate the negatives?” Once again, participants receive a ticket for each response. At the end of the brainstorming exercise, participants sign the tickets that they have acquired and they are placed in a box for a prize drawing. As a follow-up, lodge officers will want to review the re-

sults of the brainstorming session and collaborate with the members — at the next meeting, perhaps — to establish some clearly defined goals and timetables — a strategic plan — for the coming year. In the end, the lodge will have a plan which identifies lodge goals for the year ahead and deadlines for achieving them. The plan may then be shared and adopted by lodge members and revisited on a regular basis. Happy Planning! And, please, keep me in mind if you’d like to collaborate on a strategic planning session for your lodge! —SPJST— like to discuss how freshbenies might be a fit for your family. Lodge 180, Burleson lends hand to Trinity Mission Lodge 180, Burleson was brought to order on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, by President Nancy Kelly followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by youth member Logan Almonte. At the completion of the Pledge, a moment of silent prayer was said for all of our members in need of prayer for themselves as well as those in their families. Also included in our prayer session were all of our military and all others that strive to protect each and everyone on a daily basis.
State Fraternal Director Frank Horak and District Three Director John Engelke were able to join us for our monthly meeting. Also present were Patricia and Robert Sill. It’s always a pleasure to have these folks in our midst. A new Lodge 180 officer was named by President Nancy Kelly and presented to the members. John Babino was named Sergeant-at-Arms for Lodge 180. His former experience as a police officer and school teacher will come in handy at our meetings. Our Lending Hand chose a donation to Trinity Mission Health and Rehab of Burleson. We had such an enjoyable time when we last visited this institute, that we felt the need for them to be our Lending Hand outreach. I made a delivery of dental hygiene kits, brush and comb sets, and Back the Blue ‘gimme’ hats. We had enough goods for each person to receive one set of each, and the hats were going to be utilized as gifts for the lucky bingo winners. We also presented a check in the amount of $500 to the Center. Hopefully, the next time that we attend Trinity Mission Health Center all of our members will be able to attend. Fort Worth Friendship Club Fort Worth Friendship Club met Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at St. Thomas Church Parish Hall. President Barbara Becknell called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. Guest Teresa Farley was welcomed. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Minutes were read by the president. Treasurer Margaret Sears gave the financial report. Correction was made that $276 was donated to St. Vincent DePaul Society rather than $265. Thereafter, both reports were approved. Our speaker, Teresa Farley of Ridgmar Place, which is a Pegasus Senior Living Community in Fort Worth, was introduced. Betty Krenek attended a luncheon at Ridgmar Place and invited Teresa to speak to us as she was most impressed with the Senior Living Community and said the food was outstanding. Teresa gave us all the details of Ridgmar Place, said they have studio and one- or two-bedroom apartments, talked about all the services they offer including transportation, and even gave the cost range of the apartments. She stated they have excellent pastry and food chefs, and she even brought three pies for our dessert. Teresa stated her job is to meet folks and fill the apartments. Teresa was invited to join our Club and said she gets these kinds of offers everywhere she speaks. She did invite anyone interested to have lunch with her. Before our meeting was over, she offered to bring all of us lunch in June - lasagna and Caesar salad plus three pies. So ladies, you do not need to bring your dish to share as Teresa is bringing the food. Isn’t this great! Thanks, Betty, for inviting her to our meeting. It was reported that Joyce Helgeson and Darlene Tompkins have volunteered to serve as hostesses in December. Everyone was reminded of The Festival at St. Thomas Church, and any donated cakes for the cake walk will be appreciated. Barbara reported that Wes, the arborist, will come speak to us at a later date on what Indians do for trees. Hostesses for June will be Rose Ann Spann and Lynn Cummings, and the theme will be Native American with the color being turquoise. Vice President Betty Carter said she has some Indian artifacts, and she will bring them to put on display. The singing of “Happy Birthday”

We had one door prize with May Agnes Ward being the winner. The 50/50 dollar games were won by Agnes Saldana and Marie Keller. Congratulations to all; we just love to get prizes! Betty Carter and Lupe Garcia prepared a game for us to play which was in connection with old movies. It was questions as to who was featured in a movie, a famous line from what movie,
etc. It was a lot of fun. They will prepare more questions for us next month. Hostesses Darlene Tompkins and Marie Keller along with Margaret Laymance picking up the chicken, were all thanked. They did a great job. Following the meeting, grace was said and a great fried chicken lunch was enjoyed. Games were played, and a good time was had by all. The next meeting will be June 5.
Other News Anna Marie Moncrief, Margaret Sears, Sharron Connelly, Kathy Thome, and Libbie Vrla enjoyed attending the installation of new officers and tea at Colonial Country Club recently for the Auxiliary to the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of the Most Holy Trinity. It was a lovely affair. I recently received a phone call from Tracy Horn who is in assisted living and seems to be doing well. She caught me up on all her grandchildren, and she asked about everyone. She said for me to extend her greetings to all. Lydia Alholm enjoyed the visit from grandson Daniel Alholm of Nashville, Tennessee, on April 30, which was her 99th birthday. He brought a party (cake, balloon bouquet, roses, and party hats for all the residents in the dining room to enjoy). Jerry and Henrietta Milan and I stopped in so we got to celebrate with her again. Of course, since then she has made another trip to WinStar and as she always says, she came home a winner. For Mother’s Day, my sister Lil Kosarek and I were invited to have lunch with Danny and Lynn Tomanek. Danny is a brother to Mari Kosarek who is the wife of Mike, Lil’s son. While there and visiting with the husband of the youngest Danny and Lynn’s daughter Natalie, we found out that her husband is Jared Patoskie, who is a grandson to the late Joe and Mary Ann Kozel. Jared’s mother is Karen (Kozel) Patoskie and is the one that called to see if I could get the word out about the estate sale they recently had. Mary Ann and Joe were active members of the Friendship Club, and both Jared and I shared lots of stories about Joe and Mary Ann. I told

I told him that Joe was probably more interested in playing with the grandchildren than playing the accordion. We had a very nice visit while spending the day with the Tomaneks. Danny and Lynn, thanks for inviting us - I know you read the Vestnik. Update on my hiking nephew Travis. Some of you may recall me writing about my great nephew Travis Kosarek who hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2017 which took him six months - well, he is now off to hike the Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James) trail in Spain. His dad Mike is going with him, and this hike should only take about five weeks. This route is considered the French trail since it goes along the border of France and goes through Spain. There seem to be a lot of trails, but this is the most popular. Travis plans to have a tracking device so that those of us at home can keep track of them on the trail. This will be an easier hike than the Appalachian Trail as there are villages and towns all along the way, and they won’t have to sleep in tents or in shelters. Hostels are along the way so they will be able to sleep in a real bed. But in reading the little book on the trail, bedbugs can be a problem. The water is safe to drink all through the trail unless so noted so they will not need to take purifying equipment, and with towns being so close, they will not need to carry food except for that one day. I also asked if the trail is marked (don’t want anyone to get lost), and it is. The trail sign is a scalloped shell, and at each town, they need to get two stamps to get a certificate of completion. These stamps can be obtained from hostels, churches, bars, and town halls. They also need to wear one of these shells attached to their backpack visible for all to see. More about the hike later. Mike took Spanish at Nolan during high school so let’s hope he can recall or understand some of the words. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla —SPJST—

Doris Jane Skrdla was born June 6, 1939, in McLennan County, Texas, at the farm east of West to Henry Frank and Lydia Emilie (Hegar) Krizan, and passed from this life on Monday, May 6, 2019, at her home southeast of Renfrow, Oklahoma. She attended West Elementary Doris Skrdla school for her first seven years and later attended Dennison High School where she graduated in 1957. She took the entrance exam for Jefferson Davis Hospital School of Nursing in Houston and was awarded a three-year scholarship, completing her studies and practice and received her certification as a Registered Nurse (RN). She went on to practice as a nurse at Baylor University Hospital where she especially enjoyed her work in the maternity ward. On September 16, 1964, she married Emil Skrdla at Czech Brethren Church in Seaton. She moved to Renfrow, Oklahoma, where she farmed with her husband and began to raise a family. Doris enjoyed gardening, raising poultry, sewing and embroidery work, and baking while at the farm, hosting many family holiday dinners. During those family get-togethers, she enjoyed playing board games with her children and grandchildren and watching them grow up. She and her family made many trips back to Texas to see her many dear

uncles, aunts, cousins, and other relatives at family reunions. To feed her husband, five kids, and mother, on those long, hot car rides, she often would make a large batch of fried chicken and when everyone was good and hungry, she had a roadside picnic waiting. Doris spent many Sunday afternoons with her young family at Great Salt Plains so the kids could splash and play in the water and served many more picnics there. She shared the love of music with Emil so when away from the farm, they enjoyed listening to and dancing to polkas and waltzes. She used her sewing and embroidery skills to make Czech costumes for her kids to wear to the Czech days at Sumner County Fair at Caldwell, Kansas. Later, Doris and Emil joined the #1 Oklahoma Polka Club and began going regularly to polka dances and Czech festivals with their five children while enjoying spending time with friends. She was a member of and served luncheons for the women’s group at Congregational Church of Christ in Medford, Oklahoma, where her family attended regularly until its closing. She later became a member of First Baptist Church of Medford, and she was a longtime member of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Doris loved to travel with her husband and kids, and they made many trips together including driving through Yellowstone, Washington, Oregon, and the Grand Canyon on a round trip adventure when their girls were young. They drove to Carlsbad Caverns after having their third child and made many trips to the Colorado Rockies visiting Rocky Mountain National Park, Pikes
Peak, and many other natural attractions in the Colorado Springs area after having her last two children. After her children were grown, she traveled with her children and grandchildren to Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, Oregon, and Washington, and enjoyed taking the ferry rides from Victoria Island to Washington. She traveled southwest with them to San Francisco, Las Vegas, and the Hoover Dam. Then she went northeast to New York, Pennsylvania, and to the Mall of America. But road trips weren’t her only mode of travel; she enjoyed flying north to Alaska to take two cruises. She enjoyed a Caribbean cruise to the Yucatan Peninsula and a cruise from Florida to California through the Panama Canal. She was preceded in death by husband Emil Skrdla; parents Henry and Lydia Krizan; and infant sister Gladys Ann. Doris is survived by children Linda Pray and husband Todd of Bluff City, Kansas, Arlene Wilson and husband John of Braman, Joseph Alan Skrdla of Medford, David Skrdla and wife Ji Young of Oklahoma City, and John Skrdla of Renfrow; grandchildren Caitlyn, Grayson, Emily, and Jessa Ann Pray, Luke and Sara Wilson, Emilee, Abigail, Austin, Erick, and Lydia Skrdla, and William and Wesley Skrdla; and cousins, other relatives and many friends. Memorials may be made to Deer Creek Fire Department and sent to Schaeffer Mortuary, 6 North Main, Caldwell, Kansas 67022. Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11 at Schaeffer Mortuary Chapel in Caldwell, Kansas. To share a memory or leave a condolence, please visit www.schaeffermortuary.info. —SPJST—

Lodge 202, Jourdanton youth appreciates opportunity Dear Vestnik, Today, I went to volunteer at my local animal shelter. I walked about eight dogs and played with four cats. My little sister’s dog pulled her around the gravel yard when she was walking him. The last dog of the eight that I walked was a beautiful shepherd dog. She was the most obedient dog that I walked. I went into a small play area and could let her off her leash. She would sit by my ankles. If I didn’t have three dogs already, I would have adopted her. I want to thank Mrs. House and Lodge 202, Jourdanton for the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful program. Going to meetings, camp, and outings have been a wonderful experience for me so thank you for letting me be a part of this program. Sincerely, Kayla Fair, age 13 —SPJST—

Lodge 202, Jourdanton youth: volunteering at shelter is wholesome experience Dear Vestnik, On Saturday, May 11, 2019, my youth club and I volunteered at our local animal shelter for Join Hands Day. We also donated goods to help them care for the animals. We were allowed to walk the dogs and play with the cats, and each of us had a blast! The dogs were very excited to play with us, and several of them were even dragging me around. Some of the dogs, however, were very scared, and you could tell their previous home treated them poorly. Giving to the animal shelter helps dogs like those, and knowing that, is what made volunteering so wholesome. Sincerely, Kelly House, age 18 —SPJST—

29th Annual Kolache Klobase Festival set for June 8 in East Bernard
Bremond Polish Festival Days, June 21-22: Lots to see and do!
This is the 29th year for the annual Czech Kolache Klobase Festival scheduled for Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Riverside Hall in East Bernard, Texas. This event brings people together to enjoy good music, good food, and to celebrate ethnic heritage and culture. Beginning at 10:30 a.m. and continuing nonstop until 8 p.m., this year’s festival again features a first-rate lineup of entertainers. Entertainers include the Ennis Czech Boys, Czech and Then Some, Dujka Bros., Red Ravens, Texas Sound Check, and The Road Company. There will be a three-band concert at 4:30 p.m. inside the hall featuring Czech and Then Some, Dujka Bros., and Red Ravens. Dancers are also on the program this year – students from A Time to Dance Studio. Festival admission is $8 per person children 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. The admission fee covers all entertainment and music provided by bands and entertainers in the hall and outdoors in the pavilion. Parking is free of charge, and there are plenty of handicapped parking spaces. Massive water fans will cool the pavilion to provide a more comfortable setting for dancers and spectators. A large, mesh canopy will cover a large area in front of the pavilion to protect festival visitors from the heat of the sun. Arts and crafts booths will be located both inside and outside the hall. Crafts and goods of every kind will be available for sale. This is a good opportunity to shop for all types of hand-crafted items, jewelry, and clothing. There will be a cake walk again this year. A kolache eating contest sponsored by the KJT State Office is scheduled at 2:30 p.m. in the pavilion. This year, there will again be entertainment for the younger set. Kid games and activities will keep the youngsters occupied. They will also enjoy a performance at 2 p.m. by students from A Time To Dance studio. This studio is under the direction and choreography of Morgan Fritz. A plate lunch will be available for purchase again this year featuring sausage, barbecue chicken, sauerkraut, and other trimmings. The sausage and chicken will be prepared on site the morning of the festival by society members assuring a fresh-cooked meal. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. Drive-thru
A visit to Bremond, centrally located between Bryan-College Station and Waco, and just a two-hour drive from Dallas, Houston, or Austin, will tell you the history of how it was established in 1869 and settled by Polish families thanks to a museum, historical church, and renovated buildings. But if you really want to experience the Polish hospitality and flavor of this community, be sure to attend Polski Dzien - Bremond Polish Festival Days held the fourth weekend in June. The 32nd anniversary of Polski Dzien will be held June 21 and 22. The fun kicks off Friday night at 6 p.m. with a variety of food and craft vendors, beauty pageant, barbecue cook-off check-in, with master accordion musician Mason Nesvabda. The Mark Halata Band plays from 8 to 11 p.m. The 2nd Annual Polka and Waltz Dance Contest sponsored by Texas Polka News will be held Friday night. Come out and show off your polka and waltzing skills. This year, we are honoring the Groholski Family. The Groholskis own and operate one of the oldest businesses in Bremond. They are famous for their Polish sausage. Folks from all over coming home for a visit rarely leave

plates-to-go will again be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Festival admission will not be charged for drive-thru plate customers. Of course, there will be hundreds of kolaches for sale throughout the day. As in prior years, hamburgers and sausage sandwiches will be available for purchase in the afternoon. This year will again feature a drawing of a number of great prizes including hand-made beautiful quilts. Drawing tickets are available from each KJT Society member and from various local businesses. They are also available by mail if so desired – contact Edwin C. Marik at 979-335-6402. The Kolache Klobase Festival, in its 29th year, provides fun and entertainment for the entire family. The Festival Committee welcomes and encourages the wearing of Czech costumes to add a festive atmosphere and to further promote the preservation and celebration of ethnic heritage. The P.O.L.K. of A. are also urged to attend in their “red and whites” and to join in the spirit of fun and appreciation of the happy sounds of polka and waltz music. A moving flag tribute is scheduled at 3 p.m. and will recognize attending armed services veterans. This will be followed by a grand march featuring the Czech and festive costumes on parade. For information about game or arts and crafts booths, call 979-531-9747 or srdujka@gmail.com. For general information and band schedules, call 979335-7907.
