By Brian Vanicek SPJST President I’ve devoted this week and next week’s “Fraternal Focus” columns to sharing with you the overview which I presented to A.M. Best, as a preamble to our May 23, 2019, conference call. This isn’t an “annual report,” per se; however, I believe that it will provide you with greater insight into SPJST’s routine management processes. Founded in 1899, A.M. Best is a credit rating organization dedicated specifically to rating the insurance industry. A.M. Best issues financial strength ratings measuring insurance companies’ ability to pay claims and measure risk. The rating process is quite extensive and includes quantitative and qualitative evaluations of balance sheet strength, operating performance, business profile, and enterprise risk management. SPJST currently maintains an A.M. Best “B” rating with a stable outlook. The results of the 2019 examination are expected in late June. SPJST’s annual A.M. Best review is not a legal requirement. Historically, the SPJST Supreme Lodge has viewed this annual evaluation as an opportunity to be transparent about our fraternal order’s health and continually strive to improve operating performance. Introduction For SPJST, 2018 was a year characterized by improving life insurance sales and progress in establishing long-term strategies for achieving sustainable membership growth, fraternal relevancy, and a high quality portfolio of fixed-income investments. Moving forward, the Society continues to integrate strategic and operational measures and new technology with the intent of building a more dynamic platform for growth. SPJST’s mission, “Insuring and Enriching Lives,” complements its vision statement, “To provide a wholesome family environment; to encourage cherished Czech traditions; and to provide high quality, competitive life insurance for our members.” There were no significant changes to either our management structure or board structure in 2018; however, this is an area
VĚSTNÍK that the SPJST Supreme Lodge and delegates will be addressing at its 2020 Convention. Once every four years, the members hold a convention and elect delegates to attend and vote on issues concerning SPJST as a whole. On a related note, SPJST mourned the loss of District Four Director Billy Rollwitz who died on October 19, 2018. His alternate, Bobby Davis, now serves in that capacity. The Supreme Lodge’s first pre-convention planning meeting will be June 11 and 12, 2019. Among the topics to be addressed will be the identification and designation of the steps that it will be necessary for SPJST to complete in order to comply with the tenets of the NAIC’s (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) Corporate Governance Annual Disclosure (CGAD) Model Act and Regulation. Legislative Considerations Correspondingly, SPJST has been assisting the American Fraternal Alliance (AFA), our national trade association, on state legislation to enhance regulatory oversight of fraternal solvency. It remains SPJST’s belief that this common sense, pro-consumer legislation will protect individuals who purchase life insurance and annuity products from fraternals from the potential loss in the value of those policies that would incur as the result of an insolvency. This strengthens both the solvency oversight and reputational integrity of the entire fraternal community. Both the House and Senate versions of the Texas solvency measure (HB 1251 and SB 1958) have been approved by Committees and are awaiting action by the full chamber. SPJST received notice on May 23 that the Alliance-sponsored fraternal solvency legislation was approved yesterday by the House of Representatives and is headed to Governor Greg Abbott’s desk for his signature.
Year 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018
Net Admitted Assets $230,578,498 $234,251,749 $235,999,512 $238,089,763 $238,948,693 $243,741,390
Strategic Planning SPJST’s strategic planning workshop in September 2018 focused on Enterprise Risk Management and identifying the practical and timely steps management needed to take to ensure that its key risks were being addressed. Risks were identified in three key areas: (1) Risks associated with investments; (2) Risks associated with operations; and (3) Risks associated with underwriting. Five key business objectives — the same as those which were identified in the prior year’s strategic planning session — were identified. They are: 1. To update the three-year business revenue and expense projections for growing SPJST. 2. To increase premium income in line with business plan targets. 3. To remain a relevant fraternal force in the lives of our members. 4. To invest in technology that helps to attract and to engage new members as well as meet the needs of our current members. 5. To enlist the services of qualified new sales agents and to address their continuing education needs. Correspondingly, each department has identified and is working to achieve goals which support these broad strategic objectives. SPJST’s business philosophy — to work to establish a reputation for quality among members, sales agents, employees, and management remains an ongoing initiative. Efforts towards servicing the needs of current members continued in 2018. Reestablishing contacts with
members who have not been contacted — in some cases for many years — is producing positive results. As such, 2018 was a year of notable growth for SPJST in terms of insurance sales and with regards to maintaining its various operational ratios. More on that later. The decision was made in January 2019 to change SPJST’s investment advisor to Wellington Management. We believe that Wellington Management is well-equipped with the resources and specialized expertise to help SPJST to meet its asset/liability and capital management requirements well into the foreseeable future. SPJST management is working with Wellington to rebalance its investment portfolio to reduce risk and achieve a more consistent bond strategy. On a related note, SPJST changed its actuary in 2017, enlisting the services of Lewis & Ellis, Incorporated to provide assistance in areas of product pricing and analysis. Lewis & Ellis is currently working with SPJST on repricing all of its life insurance products. Business Operations SPJST was licensed to transact business in the State of Texas only. SPJST offered annuities and wrote term and whole life certificates to its members. Business was produced through 305 independent licensed and appointed agents. The Society’s maximum retained risk on any one life was $100,000. Comparative financial data, as reported in SPJST’s financial statements, appears in the chart below. To be continued in the June 12 Vestnik. —SPJST—

Flag Day — June 14 The week of June 9 to 15 is designated as “National Flag Week.” During National Flag Week, the President will issue a proclamation urging United States citizens to fly the American Flag for the duration of that week. In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August

1949, an Act of Congress established National Flag Day. Please take a few moments on this date to pause and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag; and we encourage you to talk to your children, grandchildren, and friends about what the flag means to you. It’s important to remember that so many others have given their lives to secure our freedom so please participate in this national observance. Your lodge may want to join with a veterans organization in your community and be a part of the celebration. This would count as a service project/community outreach. Member Referrals Wanted: Participate in the Monthly Prize Drawing! When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there is no substitute for member referrals. Referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Walmart gift cards. Father’s Day—June 16 A big driving force behind the establishment of the integration of Father’s Day was Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Creston, Washington. Her father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children in Spokane, Washington. She did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. The first June Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Unofficial support from such figures as William Jennings Bryan was immedi-

Ennis Sewing Circle Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at the Sokol Club Room around 8 a.m. We stretched the Junior Sokol quilt for next year. We had quilters all around. Thank you to everyone who came early and quilted. The quilt top was made by Ann Clagett. It was the color of green. If you like green, as I do, you probably would love it - I do!
We had 22 members. President Irene still had her workshop going. Everyone is doing really well. We quilted till noon then President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you all for the wonderful dishes. As usual, I ate too much. But you know, I want to taste everything! After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. We all recited the “Our Father” for our sick members and for Dorothy Holt and Bobby Hollingsworth who have passed away. Let’s remember them all in our prayers. Secretary Dee Anderson read the minutes of the last meeting, and Treasurer Dolores Vrana gave her report. Ginny Svehlak read several funny short stories that we all enjoyed. Joan Brown and Dorothy Prachyl were absent. Joan had been in the hospital. We hope she is better by now, and Dorothy Prachyl has a bad knee. We hope all is well with her by now.
Lodge 80, Holland members Coleman and Virginia Benner honored The weekend of Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19, 2019, was a super busy one for SPJST Lodge 80, Holland! On Saturday, May 18, Lodge 80 donated the lodge facilities for the reception held for Holland leaders Coleman and Virginia Benner. The couple celebrated 65 years with Holland Volunteer Fire Department. The reception was elegantly ap-

May birthday celebrants were announced - Ann Clagett, Ginny Svehlak, Dorothy Prachyl, and Lorane Marusak. “Happy Birthday” was sung to them. We discussed and voted on purchasing an ad in the Sokol Slet program book that will be held in June at Ennis Sokol Hall. In June, we will quilt for Nina Walker; In July, we will have a white elephant sale and show-and-tell. Members, start getting all your items priced and ready to sell and items for show-and-tell. We enjoy seeing all your items and hearing your stories about them. President Irene had two pages of helpful hints for quilting that she read. They were all good, but I have to say, I can’t remember them all. If anyone needs a copy, call President Irene, and she will make you a copy. The May 29 National Senior Fitness Exercise Day was announced. Don’t forget about it. It is free, and we have a delicious lunch after the exercise hosted by Sokol. We all enjoy it and have a great time. Come if you can; we would love to have you all. It was announced we will quilt baby quilts in September. If you have one almost ready, try and get it ready by then. The 50-50 dollar winner was Kay Lynn Kovar. Winner of a coffee mug with mug run was Dolores Vrana. Pat Fowler made a motion to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Kay Lynn Kovar. President Irene reminded all that the next meeting would be Thursday, June 13. We will quilt, have lunch and a meeting. Thanks for coming, stay well and happy. See you all in June. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

LEFT PHOTO: Steven Phenix displays a donation check from Lodge 187, Round Rock. Steven is the Public Relations Director at The Refuge Ranch for DMST. Other photos show The Refuge Ranch.
For Join Hands Day, Lodge 187, Round Rock raised funds to help support The Refuge Ranch. The Refuge Ranch is a 21-building, $7 million, labor of love, nestled among the Bastrop County pine trees. Developed by The Refuge for DMST™ (Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking), a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Refuge Ranch, is a long-term, residential, therapeutic community for 48 girls, minors through age 19, who have been rescued out of sex trafficking. Built from the ground up on 50 acres in a beautiful and restorative setting, The Refuge Ranch provides trauma-informed, holistic care for the girls on site, including a University of Texas Charter School program, a medical clinic staffed by community partners and various therapeutic programs uniquely designed for the development of a child survivor. The Refuge Ranch, with 48 beds, is the largest long-term, live-in rehabilitation facility for child survivors of sex trafficking in the United States.
Here’s why The Refuge Ranch is needed: • Child sex trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the world. • In the United States, there was an 846 percent increase in reported child sex trafficking cases from 2010 to 2015. • There are currently 79,000 young adults and minors being sex trafficked in Texas. • Texas has the second most reported number of child sex trafficking cases in the United States. • There are less than 600 beds available nationwide for child sex trafficking survivors, but we have over 13,000 animal shelters. • Prior to the opening of The Refuge Ranch, Texas only had 24 beds available for child survivors’ long term recovery from trauma. Throughout the day, I met many new people and was able to help with the ribbon cutting at the SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad Hall that had been restored and taken to Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. I was also able to step back in time and experience the small community of original buildings set up to honor our past as Czech descendants. Walking through the working printing press, saw mill, bar, homes, and barn was an experience I’ll never forget. Canoe Safety Tips LIFE JACKETS: When you’re in a canoe or kayak, a life jacket – aka a PFD (personal flotation device) – is not a suggestion – It is law! It doesn’t do one bit of good laying on the floor of the boat. You need to wear it! It doesn’t matter how well you swim or how warm the water. Make sure you have a life jacket; make sure it’s in good condition; and wear it! PACKING: As you pack your canoe with your gear, think “balance” – side-to-side and front-to-back. Keep your gear – especially the heavy stuff – low in the boat. This promotes stability more than anything else. STAY LOW: The same goes for the weight of the occupants. The lower you can stay in the craft, the more stable it will be. This is why native American canoes seldom had seats. Paddlers knelt on the floor of the canoe, putting their weight as low as possible. STAY CENTERED: If you are paddling a canoe alone, you’ll have the best control positioned just rear of the center. Solo canoes most often have their seat in this position. This is especially important in the wind as it will be easier to keep the canoe going the direction you want to go.
Congratulations to Kaillan Honza of Lodge 25, Ennis! She was inducted into National Junior Honor Society in Ennis. Kaillan is pictured with her parents Jodie and Sharon Honza. She is the granddaughter of Adell Rejcek and the late Clement Rejcek.
SPARE PADDLE: Nearly as important as a life jacket is a spare paddle. Where do you think the phrase “…up a creek without a paddle” comes from? If you lose or break your one and only paddle, you have no way of controlling your boat and you’ll be at the mercy of the wind and current.

Lodge 154, Fort Worth youth: fun field day with snow cones
The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas met on Sunday, May 19, 2019, at 2 p.m. The meeting was brought to order by Youth Leader Lynda Novak. Flag Bearer Josh Tucker led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance, youth club motto, and a moment of silence for the troops serving overseas and our departed members. Youth Leader Lynda discussed old and new business and brought everyone up to date on all the district events including Youth Achievement Day (YAD), camp, and State YAD. She thanked everyone for working so hard on YAD cards and read the thank you card from Restored Hope for our toilet paper donation. She also reminded us that the June community service project will be to collect socks for the Buckner Organization. Before starting on our Vestnik projects, we elected officers for the 20192020 year. They are President Kendall Tucker, Vice President Ryan Ruzicka, Sergeant-at-Arms Megan Ruzicka, Reporter Josh Tucker, and Flag Bearer Kalyne Tucker. We then adjourned and enjoyed our svačina. Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club volunteered at Atascosa Animal Shelter in Jourdanton for its Join Hands Day project. Along with bringing much needed donations of towels, cat toys, and dog toys, youth club members and parents helped walk the dogs in the shelter and play with some of the kitties. Even though it was lightly raining off and on, the kids and dogs seemed to have a great
time! The dogs were so excited to be able to get outside of their pens for a while. The youth members enjoyed their time so much that we are planning to return for another day of volunteering in the summer, and we even had one youth member go back and adopt a kitten! Se skupinou ředitelů navštívili kancléře univeritní systému Texaské zemědělské a me chanické university v College Station, Tx.

Naši nadaci representovaly Lynette Urbanovsky and Jo Ann Zaeske.a Brian Vaníček. President nadace Woody Smith nyní oganisuje kulturní činnost, pozval otce a syna Slováčkovi na koncert a spolu s ním spolupracuje Clarice Snokhous. Předseda James Sassín přečetl finanční zprávu naší finanční tajemnice Cindy Belknap, která nebyla přítomna. V pokladně máme slušnou částku peněz, avšak Cindy ráda přijme jakokoli podporu pro naší nadaci v jakékoli podobě. Šeky vyplněny na naši nadaci s poznámkou donation pošlete na adresu: Cindy P. Belknap, 2520 Willing Avenue, Ft. Worth, Tx 76110.
—SPJST—

Czech Center Museum Houston Founder Effie Rosene passes away Published May 15, 2019 in Broadway World Houston by BWW News Desk Effie Marie Sojak Rosene passed away early Mother’s Day morning, Sunday, May 12, 2019. She was born November 10, 1932, to Frank Sojak and Christine Lezak Sojak, Czech immigrant farmers, in the Frydek/Simonton area of Texas. She grew up in the Rio Grande Valley with 15 brothers and sisters and graduated from Rio Hondo High School. She attended St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Houston. She was working as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital when she met the love of her life, Willard George (Bill) Rosene. They married in 1953, and they raised three daughters while she worked in both hospital and school settings. Deciding that she wanted to continue her education, she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from St. Joseph College in Maine and a master’s degree in health care administration from Texas Woman’s University in Houston. She eventually became assistant administrator of the Northwest unit of the Memorial Healthcare System in Houston. When Bill retired, Effie decided to

Trips to Europe inspired them both to learn about their heritage, especially as the former communist Czechoslovakia became more accessible to visitors. Hence, they built a vacation home in the wine village of Hlohovec, South Moravia, in the Czech Republic, giving them a base for exploring the region, as well as a comfortable place for extended family to visit. They had the idea to create an organization to showcase not only the historical achievements and heritage of Americans of Czech descent, but also offer and present the European culture of past and contemporary Czechs and Slovaks that is so rich in artistic accomplishments. The Czech Center Museum Houston

was incorporated on March 8, 1996, as a non-profit educational and cultural organization, made up entirely of volunteers. Initial office and retail space were established in the Northwest Mall. Over the subsequent years, Effie worked tirelessly to help bring forth a permanent home to showcase the best of her heritage. Monetary support from more than 6,000 individuals, with assistance from local as well as national and international sources eventually culminated in the current Czech Center Museum Houston, which was completed in September 2004 in Houston’s Museum District. The outpouring of support for the center has enabled Czech language classes, scholarship awards, dinners, programs, and events to take place in the Czech Center. Effie worked tirelessly in all facets of the organization, from sales in the allvolunteer gift ship to the administrative head of the organization. Her devotion and perseverance in the mission of the Czech Center were well known. She served on the boards of American Friends of the Czech Republic and the Texas Czech Physicians Exchange Program and advocated for many other Czech and Slovak organizations locally and abroad. Her organization was recognized by the Czech government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a prestigious Gratia Agit award for its work in the furthering of and advocacy of a Civil Society in the Czech Republic and for increasing knowledge of the impact those of Czech heritage have made here in their new homeland. She and Bill were also presented an award by Houston Business Alliance for a significant asset to the City of Houston in building the unique Baroque architecture building in the Museum District. She was honored with a Mayor’s Volunteer Houston Award in 2010 and will be honored with the 2019 Civil Society Vision Award by American Friends of the Czech Republic. Effie is survived by her husband of over 65 years, Bill; daughters Sherry Pierce and husband Lindsey, Cathy Anderson and husband Larry, and Christie Johnson and husband Eric; grandchildren Sarah Pierce, Matthew Anderson, Christopher Anderson and wife Mary, Rory Johnson and wife Alexis, and Eric Johnson, Jr.; brothers Clem Sojak and wife Miki and Jim Sojak; sister Mary Gray; sister-in law Dorothy Moore; cousins, nieces and nephews, and nu-

Effie always lived by and was inspired by the words of John Ruskin who said, “When we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be such for present delight nor for present use alone. Let it be such work, as our descendants will think of us for. And let us think, as we lay stone upon stone, that a time is to come when these stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them and that men will say as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, ‘See this our father did for us.’” Funeral service and burial was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Frydek, Texas, on Thursday, May 16 at 11 a.m. A celebration of her life was held at the Czech Center Museum Houston on Friday, May 17 at 3 p.m. The family requests donations be made to the Czech Center Museum Houston in Effie’s name. —SPJST—
LIPNÍK NAD BEČVOU – WHERE GAME OF THRONES GOT ITS SHIPS You do not have to be a Game of Thrones fan to be in awe at the television’s shows’ detailed props, CGI, and high production values. However, few know that the workshop responsible for many of the ships visible in the series can be found in the landlocked Czech Republic. If you are wondering where some of Hollywood’s biggest films and television shows get their ships, look no further than the small Moravian town of Lipník nad Bečvou. There a team led by Radim Zapletal has constructed ships for the Iron Fleet, Ragnar Lodbrok, and Tristan and Isolde. He says his workshop
really got going in 2012 when, out of the blue, he was asked to build some of the ships for the History Channel’s Vikings television show. “I was having a normal day hammering away in my workshop when suddenly I get a phone call. I don’t speak any English, so I put the phone down. But then half an hour later, they were already calling me in Czech.” In his early years, Mr. Zapletal focused on historical weapon production. Then in the late 1980s, he decided to take part in the 500th anniversary celebrations of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America in proper style – by building a replica ship from the explorer’s fleet and sailing it to the New World.

The ship was built, but he never got to realize the dream of sailing it. However, his talent was noticed, and he was soon contacted by the Barrandov Studio in Prague. The relatively cheap cost of shooting in the Czech Republic, coupled with its historic towns and skilled film staff, meant that the country was chosen by many Hollywood productions who went on to film there in the early 2000s. Radim Zapletal’s ships started appearing in movies such as Van Helsing and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. But by 2012, business had slowed down in Barrandov and Mr. Zapletal’s team was out of work. The phone call from the Vikings Television Series caught them at the perfect time. The shipwright set up his own workshop, aptly named Kolumbus 92 and has built 30 ships and boats since. This includes a number of ships for the world famous HBO Game of Thrones series. For a team that usually constructs historical vessels, he says that building ships for that show was quite different. “Game of Thrones is a fantasy show so when it comes to the ships, these are always made according to the design of the artist. Due to the scale of the project there are, of course, many people involved, which can sometimes lead to complications. Everyone wants to contribute their bit. But in the end, it has to float.” While there are only three of them, Kolumbus 92 are a productive team, sometimes constructing three ships in a space of two months. Asked about what is his favorite ship, he says he holds particular respect towards Viking ships, due to their technologically brilliant design. He also admits that things can get emotional when the product is finished. “It is true that you develop feelings towards the ship while you are building it. Not every ship can be constructed easily. Artists, of course, do not respect ships’ technology and often their designs are

quite complicated. Then when it is finally finished, you push it out of the door, and the delivery men, although they are professionals, just take it, load it up, and drive away.” Although time and financial constraints mean that the prop ships cannot be constructed with original historical tools, he says his Viking ships are guaranteed to last 10 years. ~ Tom McEnchroe https://www.radio.cz/en/section/curraffrs/lipnik-nad-becvouwhere-game-of-thrones-got-its-ships. Czech celebrity singer songwriter, guitarist teaches in USA this summer Do you like music and play at least a little bit on guitar? Learn from the best, the master of many guitar styles, European star, Vladimír Merta, in personalized guitar lessons, during the first week of July 2019, at McDaniel College campus in Westminster, Maryland. From my experience, all guitar playing levels would benefit, you might have played guitar for 20 years, and you still would see the instrument with new eyes, which might help you to play like you, not just copy somebody else! You can even plan your vacation around it, and besides the guitar course, visit famous Baltimore inner Harbor, Washington, DC, memorials and museums, or drive to a beach in Ocean City. This opportunity to meet and learn with Vladimír will likely not be repeated in the future!
