odge 19, Velehrad was rededicated on the 19th day of May in 2019! And, what a wonderful day it was at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange. The hall has been restored beautifully, and I’m sure SPJST’s founders and Lodge 19’s charter members would be proud. Please plan a trip to TCHCC to see the hall and all of the other houses and buildings in the Czech Village. It is a very moving experience. Walking into and through the old Czech houses brings back so many memories of my grandparent’s home. It is worth taking the time to travel to La Grange to see all the TCHCC displays - including the Lodge 19 hall. You will be amazed! Lodge 151, Wharton member Janie Bucek is seeking photos of the original Velehrad lodge hall when it was a larger building. If you have any historic photos of the Velehrad community or stories about the Velehrad community, please contact me, and I will put you in touch with Janie. Janie and husband David were closely involved early on with the efforts to restore the lodge hall as well as the efforts which resulted in Texas state historical markers for the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery. Janie also said that an SPJST Lodge 19 pall cloth was in the Velehrad lodge hall when they first were allowed in the building; however, it was in poor condition and falling apart. The pall cloth was used at funerals that were conducted in the Velehrad lodge hall. Janie is asking if anyone has ever taken a picture of an SPJST pall cloth. This photo would be a great addition to the display in the Velehrad lodge hall. If you have a photo or any information, please contact us. It will be most appreciated!

By Brian Vanicek SPJST President Continued from the June 5 Vestnik. A total of 1,240 life insurance certificates were issued in 2018, representing an increase of more than 20 percent over the 989 certificates issued in 2017. Insurance issued also increased by more than 17 percent — from $63,383,000 in 2017 to $77,075,000 in 2018. (As an aside, insurance production through the first quarter of 2019 reflects notable gains over the same reporting period last year.) Total insurance in force at year-end 2018 was approximately $989 million, up by approximately $23 million from the year before. Net income for 2018 was ($930,884,) down incrementally from the negative ($907,312) recorded at year-end 2017. This decline can be attributed to the increase in aggregate reserves. Sustainable growth is growth that is repeatable, systematic, and aligned with the mission of the Society, and it represents the underlying strength and vitality of SPJST’s core business. Thanks to improved management oversight, SPJST’s lapse ratio has improved significantly in recent years. Whereas that number was

VĚSTNÍK extremely high — in excess of 12 percent in 2008, that has improved greatly, down to 4 percent in 2018. Sales persistency has also stabilized. The 13-month persistency was 95.3 percent in 2018, consistent with the 95.3 percent recorded in 2017. A marketing specialist was added to the team in January 2018 to advance efforts to build a quality sales force and build new business. SPJST’s regional general agent team was introduced in the second half of 2018 in an effort to reduce expenses associated with this area and to establish a more responsive and productive sales team. Additionally, SPJST implemented a new and improved sales agent website for its sales team in 2018. Under the new system, agents have a member’s entire account information at their fingertips; moreover, the new system enables agents to track pending business and know the status of that pending business in real time. The marketing department’s emphasis is on achieving sustainable, year-overyear growth that is aligned with the mission of the Society. Life insurance represents the underlying strength and vitality of SPJST’s core business. Moving forward, SPJST’s marketing thrust remains twofold: (1) On achieving organic and sustainable growth. Working to identify and fulfill the life insurance needs of our current members, extended families, and circles

of friends with high quality life-insurance represented a key component of SPJST’s efforts to achieve new growth. (2) Additional growth has also been achieved by expanding existing distribution channels within its traditional markets as well as in those geographic areas where SPJST enjoys good name recognition and a strong fraternal presence. Noncontractual Benefits On the fraternal front, our watchword is “relevancy” — doing those things that bring meaning and substance to SPJST’s fraternal mission. The prescription for relevancy is strategic planning — making a conscious effort to regularly address what we as a society and our 104 lodges are doing to deliver redeeming value to our members and to society. On a related note, SPJST Foundation - a 501(c)3 non-profit organization - has emerged as a funding source for various organizational and charitable endeavors which heretofore received their primary funding from SPJST. At its April 2019 meeting, the board voted to launch SPJST’s new line-up of three web-based fraternal benefit options. It’s an inviting set of offerings that will extend benefits — at no cost to the Society — in three key areas, including: • A practical web-based program to control healthcare costs; • A web-based program for travel insur-

ance; and • A website (smile.amazon.com) operated by Amazon.com which donates 0.5 percent of the purchase price to the SPJST Foundation. The intrinsic value of SPJST’s fraternal lodge system is conservatively expressed as the cumulative total of the assessed value assigned to SPJST lodge properties by the various tax appraisal districts throughout the state of Texas. Through 2018, 37 of SPJST’s 104 subordinate lodges owned real estate. Based on 2019 tax roll data, these properties are valued at more than $27 million. From an accounting perspective, SPJST’s subordinate lodges maintain independent financial records, bank accounts, liabilities, and assets; moreover, SPJST’s lodges offer a clearly defined market for the development of new life insurance business. SPJST lodges represent the face of the Society in the communities where SPJST members live, work, and play. A tremendous amount of organizational goodwill is generated by SPJST lodges through their volunteerism and monetary support of their local communities and statewide initiatives. SPJST continues to maintain close relations with the leadership of its peer fraternal benefit societies within the Texas market. Through active fraternal alliances, we have been collaborating on multiple fraternal fronts, building a

VĚSTNÍK bridge which may lead to future business alliances. As was reported in 2017, the SPJST Education and Nature Center mortgage note was vanquished by SPJST in 2016 in an amiable deed in lieu of foreclosure transaction. This has proven to be a positive move as Camp Kubena — which is categorized as an investment property — is staffed with qualified camp professionals and has been aligned in pursuit of a two-fold mission: (1) To provide a central focus for SPJST’s youth and fraternal program; and (2) To generate revenue. The property affords multiple branding and marketing opportunities for SPJST. The SPJST Supreme Lodge and camp management are currently engaged in establishing short-, intermediate-, and longterm goals — including profitability objectives — for Camp Kubena. Accounting, Operations, and Investments Moving forward, SPJST’s investment objectives are twofold: First: To grow a sound fraternal society for the benefit of our members, and Second: To improve our A.M. Best rating. The Society performed its data processing and maintained its books and records at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas. The SPJST used Microsoft Windows and IBM O/S 400 as its operation systems. SPJST used Insurance Plus, a purchased application from United Systems and Software, Inc.

Wednesday, June 12, 2019 (USSI), for ceded reinsurance, reserving, underwriting, and claims activities. Investments were tracked and maintained on both Insurance Plus and Portman, a purchased application from Advanced Business Systems. The Society used Insurance Plus for its general ledger and financial reporting. SPJST remains committed to these efforts as well as to efforts to reduce future volatility to surplus. Even as SPJST has been able to lower its product and investment risks in recent years, working with our advisors, we have taken actions in the spring of 2019 that should substantially improve the credit quality of SPJST’s investment portfolio on a going forward basis. Total SPJST assets at year-end 2018 were approximately $244 million, up incrementally from $239 million the year before. SPJST’s unallocated surplus decreased to $16.871 million at year-end 2018, from the $18.328 million recorded at the end of 2017. The decrease was primarily attributeable to the $4,616,271 in additional set asides for reserves. While an increase in unallocated surplus is always desirable, one of our key objectives was to maintain a solid ratio of surplus to assets. In 2018, this ratio was 6.9 percent, consistent with the 7.8 percent ratio posted in 2017 and the 7.8 percent ratio of surplus to assets ratio reported at the end of 2016. At year-end 2018, the SPJST continued to post an impressive Risk-Based Capital Ratio of 609.3 percent. SPJST continued to lower its exposure to assets carried on the books at market value and, at year-end, represented 1.6 percent of invested assets. Fixed income securities with an average

maturity of approximately 10 years comprised nearly nine-tenths of SPJST’s invested assets with the remainder consisting of mortgage loans, real estate, cash and short-term investments, and certificate loans. Exposure to mortgage loans was lowered to 4.1 percent of assets at the end of 2018 from approximately 4.7 percent of assets at the end of 2017. At its April 2017 Supreme Lodge meeting, the decision was made to discontinue SPJST’s mortgage lending program. There was no exposure to preferred stocks. SPJST worked diligently to maintain good asset cash flows in relation to the expected cash outflows of the liabilities. Focus was maintained on limiting and reducing annuity product exposure in order to further mitigate risk. A consistent trend of growth in unallocated surplus combined with these other positive attributes help to establish a platform for future success and growth of SPJST. In addition to reducing surplus volatility, we believe that SPJST is wellpositioned to continue to maintain its superior BCAR score calculated by A.M. Best. SPJST Continues to Build Upon Fraternal Business Model During 2018, the Texas Department of Insurance conducted its five-year examination of the Society. This examination covered the period of January 1, 2013, through December 31, 2017. The examination was planned and performed to evaluate the financial condition, assess corporate governance, identify current and prospective risk of the Society, and evaluate system controls and procedures used to mitigate those risks. This ex-

5

amination also included identification and evaluation of significant risks that could cause the Society’s surplus to be materially misstated both currently and prospectively. As a result of the examination, all accounts and activities of SPJST were considered in accordance with the risk-focused examination process. In 2019, management and membership observe the 122nd anniversary of the founding of SPJST. We celebrate an organization that remains vibrant and relevant in the lives of its members. Thanks to my fellow officers and directors for what we have been able to accomplish in the preceding year and for taking action in areas that will help to ensure the membership growth as well as financial strength and stability of SPJST in the future. Special thanks to our devoted members for their continued support of SPJST life insurance products and their commitment to SPJST’s fraternal mission. SPJST mourned the loss of District Four Director Billy Rollwitz who died on October 19, 2018. His replacement, Bobby Davis, now serves in that capacity. We appreciate the wisdom of our SPJST founding fathers. They founded an organization that provided as much for the future as it did for themselves and their families. By establishing life insurance as the dominant feature, they provided a valuable benefit to their members. At the same time, they recognized the intangible value of doing business as a fraternal organization. The fraternal business model is the bedrock upon which we build. —SPJST—

History comes to life on TCHCC campus with re-dedication of SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall History resonates within the walls of the SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall. On Sunday, May 19, 2019, SPJST members and well-wishers celebrated the grand re-opening of the SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall on the campus of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange. The event took place in conjunction with TCHCC’s annual Slavnost - Mayfest: A Tribute to Czech-Texas Immigrants of All Years. The lodge was moved from its original site in northern Lavaca County in the Velehrad community to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center on November 9, 2017, by Kana Brothers, Inc. Beginning in the spring of 2018, SPJST Foundation directors started making repairs. By the end of 2018, the building was ready to be painted both inside and out. Hutton Painting of La Grange was selected for the job, including the sanding and sealing of the longleaf pine wood floor. From the selection of paints to the refinishing of furniture and other interior appointments, efforts have been made to restore the hall’s exterior and interior condition much the way it would have appeared in the summer of 1897 when SPJST (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas) was established and SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad received its charter as one of the SPJST’s first 25 charter lodges. The grand re-opening of the SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad Hall in La Grange represents a continuation of the restoration efforts which commenced on March 12, 2002, when the initial SPJST District Six Cemetery Association Board

of Directors met. They were Michael Ahlstrom (incorporator) of Lodge 32, Victoria; Philip Vahalik of Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Alvin Jurena and Eddie Vrana, both of Lodge 23, Moravia; Vlasta Bartos of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje; Charles Garrett of Lodge 97, Placedo; David Zielonka of Lodge 148, El Maton; and David Bucek of Lodge 151, Wharton. “Many hours, days, and weeks went into the original restoration of the building and cleaning of the cemetery in the early to mid-2000s,” says SPJST District Six Director Karen Kaspar, who concurrently serves as a director of the SPJST Foundation. “David and Janie Bucek were instrumental in the research and development of this project. I am also so very appreciative to the volunteers, SPJST Foundation, and the many hours, days, and weeks that have gone into this past couple of years of moving the Velehrad

lodge hall to its present home at TCHCC and restoring it once again to its historic beauty.” In the spring of 2006, the exterior of the building was restored by members of SPJST District Six Cemetery Association. The SPJST Foundation expresses tremendous gratitude to those caring individuals whose efforts rescued this historic SPJST charter lodge hall from obscurity. As a result of these past and more recent efforts, the Velehrad lodge hall will be a place where history comes to life and new memories are made. The 2019 SPJST District Six Cemetery Association Board of Directors are Philip Vahalik of Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Kathy Guenther and Elizabeth Holub, both of Lodge 23, Moravia; Yvonne Marcaurele and Karen Kaspar, both of Lodge 30, Taiton; Vlasta Bartos of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje; David Bucek and Janie Bucek, both of Lodge 151, Wharton; and Johnnie Hoffman of Lodge 184, Moul-

ton. Special thanks to TCHCC Manager Mark Hermes for his hands-on support throughout all phases of the project. “I see the restoration of the SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad lodge hall as part of a larger and ongoing effort,” says SPJST President Brian Vanicek, who concurrently serves as president of the SPJST Foundation. “Whereas many of the physical elements of the lodge hall have been redressed: change of location, structural stabilization, interior as well as exterior reparations and painting, and furnishings restored, the grand re-opening sets the stage for the next phase of the reclamation process — and that is sharing the Velehrad story with others.” Even as the Velehrad story is replete with specific names, dates, and places, it is a story of immigration, determination, and assimilation — a story that each of us as pioneer descendants have in common. Considerable research as it relates to Velehrad — the community, the lodge, and the cemetery — has already been done thanks to Janie Bucek of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton. Janie and husband David were closely involved early on with the efforts to restore the lodge hall as well as the efforts which resulted in Texas state historical markers for the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery adjacent cemetery. There are lessons to be learned from the Velehrad story. The more we learn from the past and by discovering how things were and how they evolved, the better-positioned we are to rediscover the strengths that define SPJST as an institution and — for many families — a part of life. —SPJST—

State Duchess enjoys Velehrad rededication Dear Vestnik, In La Grange, I had so much fun as the SPJST State Duchess. The food and desserts were great, and the library was so neat! I loved all the old buildings that were on display so I could imagine how life was a long time ago. I liked handing out the Velehrad buttons. I love you, Vestnik! Love, Jenna Fair, age 8 SPJST State Duchess —SPJST—

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club reports on May meeting SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club met on Friday, May 17, 2019, at Casa Hernandez in conjunction with the adult lodge. We had our awards banquet this evening. We recognized four 50-year pin members. Mrs. Bubela told us to keep up with the Vestnik for upcoming events and guidelines for camp. She reminded us that on Sunday, May 19 was the dedication of SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall in La Grange, and it was going to be a District Six outing. We enjoyed an evening of fellowship with SPJST lodge members. We had a nice enchilada supper. The meeting was then adjourned. Our next meeting is going to be Wednesday, June 5 at Taiton Community Center. I hope to see you all then. Grant Bubela, age 13 —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton youth participates in first beseda performance Dear Vestnik Readers, I am having fun on my first few days of summer break. I am doing swim lessons right now. I am excited for YAD. I got to participate in my first beseda performance at the SPJST annual picnic in Seaton. I liked my first performance. After my first performance, I got to get a free Dr. Pepper. That was exciting because Mommy doesn’t let me drink soda at home. I can’t wait to do it again at YAD. I even got my picture in the Temple Daily Telegram. Have a good summer! Fraternally, Travis Ordogne, age 7 —SPJST—

Dear Vestnik, I am so excited to be going to teen camp. Five whole days without my little sister, yay! I have always loved camp. I love seeing and making new friends. I also love the activities at camp. Sincerely, Kayla Fair, age 13 —SPJST—

Dear Vestnik, After our Join Hands Day trip to the animal shelter, I adopted a kitten. He is so cute! We call him Snuggles. He is gray with light gray stripes. We have to feed him every four hours he is a hog! He is also so hyper. He likes to run all over the place, and he likes it when we give him food from the table. Sometimes he acts like a dog. He’s so funny, but that’s my little Snuggles! Meow! Love, Makenna Poppe, age 9 —SPJST—
