the american flag and what it means to me
DAR, Temple Mayor honor SPJST employees for flag diligence
Megan Ohnheiser • Lodge 185, New Braunfels 2019 Flag Day Essay Contest Winner Congratulations to Megan Ohnheiser, 12, of Lodge 185, New Braunfels for submitting the winning essay, “The American Flag and What It Means To Me” in SPJST’s 2019 Flag Day Essay Contest. For her efforts, Megan will be receiving a $100 gift card, a U.S. flag, wooden pole, and hanging bracket that will be presented at State Youth Achievement Day on Saturday, August 3. Congratulations to Megan for submitting the winning essay, and thanks to all SPJST youth for participating in this year’s contest. The first flag representing the United States of Amer ica was designed and sewn by Betsy Ross in 1776 and adopted by Congress on June 14, 1777. With 13 stripes and 13 stars, signifying the original 13 states, our flag has undergone a few changes since that time. Though we still have the 13 stripes, alternating red and white, we now have 50 stars, one for each of our 50 states. But the American Flag means more to me than just these bare facts. From my earliest recollection, I have heard historical accounts, family stories, and have par ticipated in school and community activities which have inspired in me a deep respect for our flag. I have studied history and learned about some of the critical events in our nation’s past. I know that many people have fought in the military under the American Flag. Their purpose was to protect and defend the free doms our flag represents. When I think of their bravery and what they endured, my heart skips a beat. Some gave their very lives. I am humbled to know their sac rifice preserved the freedoms I enjoy today. All my life my family has stressed patriotism. They have shared many stories with me about my ancestors. They came to America from England, Scotland, Ireland, France, and Germany. They left their families and their native lands seeking freedom. They participated in the
American Revolution and every other conflict in early American history. My greatgreatgrandfather was wounded twice in France during World War I. Two greatgrandfathers participated in World War II. My greatuncle served for three dec ades, from Viet Nam to Desert Storm. I am over whelmed with gratitude for their service. How could I not have a deep respect for the Ameri can Flag? I experience a variety of emotions when I see it. My first reaction is always to rise to my feet and place my hand over my heart. Sometimes, I sense that my heart swells. Often, I feel the sting of tears in my eyes. These feelings are best described as joy, pride, and pa triotism. I feel joy that I am blessed to live in this great country, where I can be anything I want to be. I feel pride in the contributions made by my family and others in preserving the freedoms we all enjoy. I know that I will do everything in my power to be a good citizen and to defend my country and my flag. I am grateful to my family for teaching me and for setting a good example of what it means to be a patriot. I am proud to stand and repeat the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag every morning at school, at every meeting of every organization, and at every sports event. I look for

City of Temple Mayor Tim Davis and members of the local chapter of Daughters of American Revolution (DAR) recognized Maintenance Manager Rudy Constancio and Director of Accounting/ITS Roy Vajdak for their efforts in maintaining the Home Office flag that flies proudly each day overlooking Main Street. More on page 6. ward to Veterans Day and Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Look for me at all the celebrations. I’ll be the one, right up in the front, waving the American Flag. —SPJST—

Governor Abbott Signs Solvency Legislation Better Protecting Texas Fraternal Members By Brian Vanicek SPJST President Thanks to those of you who have taken the time to offer feedback on the “Fraternal Focus” column! It’s good to know that you’re reading and find it enlightening. I wish I had started long ago! There’s so many things that we are involved in at the Home Office on a routine basis that I want to share with you. Most recently, on June 10, the SPJST Home Office received notice that Texas Governor Gregg Abbott signed House Bill 1251, the American Fraternal Alliance (AFA) sponsored fraternal solvency bill, into law. This represented a significant victory for the Texas fraternal community and for AFA, as enhanced fraternal solvency legislation is among the organization’s most important strategic objectives. With the Governor’s signature, the new law enhances solvency regulation for fraternal benefit societies in the state of Texas and better protects the thousands of Texans who rely on fraternals for their life insurance and retirement income needs. SPJST worked cooperatively with other Texas fraternal organizations, American Fraternal Alliance, and staff at Texas Department of Insurance on achieving the legislation which enjoyed widespread bipartisan support in both chambers of the Legislature. You may view the new legislative document online at https://legiscan.com/TX/bill/HB1251/2019 AFA Spring Symposium Addresses Best Practices Maintaining and building a Society for the future represents an exciting and thrilling experience with the potential for great rewards. It is an experience that can put new membership in the books and new life into our lodges. It is worth the demands of energy and time. Sometimes it means taking a road trip! Two weeks ago, SPJST Supreme Lodge Chairman/
VĚSTNÍK District One Director Donnie Victorick and I had the privilege of representing SPJST at the American Fraternal Alliance (AFA) Spring Symposium in Chicago. This was my first national AFA event in three years and a wonderful opportunity to get recharged and excited about the work that we do — providing our members with the opportunity to secure their financial futures through the purchase of life insurance and annuities and help to build stronger communities through our lodges and programs that reflect our members shared values. The three-day program featured 15 breakout sessions covering best practices in three separate tracks — Governance, Growth, and Communication and Community Service, plus roundtable sessions and networking events. The networking events were especially productive in that they enabled us to evaluate new vendors and to learn more about industry trends and how they are being implemented. Too, it was an opportunity to reconnect with our fraternal colleagues and to establish new alliances. In that we were in Chicago, I was also able to visit one afternoon with one of our dear Sokol friends, Jean Hruby, who serves as President of American Sokol, which is based
there in the Windy City. The American Sokol, which includes many SPJST members among its ranks, celebrates the ideal of a “sound mind in a sound body” and provides fitness and community for individuals and families through physical, educational, and social programs. Many SPJST lodges and Sokol units share bonds that span the generations. The year 2020 will be a convention year for SPJST. Of particular interest and relevance was the session that we attended entitled “Modifying Conventions” which provided insights into what our fraternal peers are doing to breathe life into their convention process. One of the most effective ways fraternal organizations are turning their conventions into memorable learning experiences is by creating convention opportunities that enable delegates and their guests to be exposed to new and relevant fraternal information — to motivate, to engage, and to educate participants. That’s being done in a number of ways: Through superior keynote speakers, informative exhibits, and even audio-visual presentations. The Supreme Lodge will be working to include all of these elements in what we are already referring to as the 2020 Vision Convention. It should be a good one! —SPJST—

Lodge 18, Elgin welcomes Lost Cause band this Sunday Another school year has ended. Lodge 18, Elgin awarded one scholarship. At the next meeting, we will present the scholarship winner to the members. We had no Lodge 18 youth apply. We have so few youth members; they are missing out on a lot of opportunities for camp, scholarships, etc. SPJST has so much to offer. Life insurance is just one part of the organization . . . plus purchasing life insurance at a young age is so affordable. Check us out - we meet the third Tuesday of each month at the lodge hall on Highway 95 North. Trustees are busy getting necessary repairs done. Thank you, Charles, F.L., David, Mike, and Jeanette for all you do at the hall.
Charles Wilson is recuperating from back surgery. It’s good to see him up and around. We hope you will be 100 percent before long, Charles! The Corpus Christi Getaway still has openings. I hear it is a lot of fun and affordable. Call the Home Office to check it out. Sorry this is late. I lost it in the computer. Maybe some day things will work better; for now, I battle internet, television, and cell service. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Doris Brian. On Sunday, June 30, we have Lost Cause playing - this is a polka band that is the former Central Texas Sounds. “Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365-page book. Write a good one.” —Brad Paisley

the April minutes. David Kerlin made a motion to accept the minutes as read; Gilbert Bohac seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. Brenna Bohac gave the treasurer’s report and included expenditures, income, and the balance. Fraternal information for the month consisted of a reminder of the Corpus Christi Getaway. Old business discussed was that Gilbert temporarily fixed the kitchen floor. It was discovered that the water heater had a very slow leak that had rotted out a section of the floor. Further repairs to permanently repair floor are still needed. Under new business, Bridget informed us that she discovered water spots on the stairs. A window that has not been repaired was allowing rain to come inside. In addition, a roofer was consulted, and it was found that the roof is in need of repairs. She said the roofer gave her two quotes: $16,500 for a thinner covering with a shorter warranty period and $22,000 for a thicker covering with a longer warranty. It was discussed to use some of our savings account to have repairs done. District Two Director Jesse Pospisil suggested getting a loan from the Home Office to cover some of the cost. Bridget recommended we proceed with having the $22,000 repair done. Gilbert made a

Since our meeting will be the day before the July 4 holiday, wear something patriotic - you know the colors! Master Arborist Wes Caldwell was introduced. He spoke about how Indians shaped trees to mark directions to burial sites, water, low places to cross a body of water, etc. He showed photos on a screen which were most interesting. Various trees in the area were discussed which are probably ones that were shaped by the Indians years ago. It was a very interesting presentation, and Wes fielded lots of questions. Lodge 81, Needville member Natalie Silhavy achieves Grand Age of 96 SPJST congratulates Sister Natalie Elsie Silhavy of Lodge 81, Needville, who celebrates her 96th birthday on Friday, June 21, 2019. As such, Natalie is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessment. Natalie was born to Joe Henry Michalec and Elsie Hluchan Michalec on June 21, 1923, in Needville, Texas. She had two brothers Odell Michalec (deceased) and J.D. Michalec (living) and two sisters Irene Coker and Corinne Michalec, both deceased. Natalie graduated from Richmond High School in 1942. Natalie married John Joe Silhavy in June 1946 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. They were blessed with two sons Larry and wife Patricia Silhavy of Richmond and Danny Silhavy (deceased) and wife Helen Silhavy of Rosenberg. John and Natalie were married for 45 years. She worked at Hughes Tool of Houston as a machinist during World War II. She also worked at H&L Bar-B-Que in Rosenberg as cashier for many years. Some of Natalie’s favorite stories and recollections were of the many
good times that she and husband John, their boys, and her brothers, Odell and JD with their families have had together hunting deer, squirrels, and armadillos on their lease in the Cat Spring/New Ulm area. Being with family and friends playing dominoes and playing penny-ante poker whether at the lease or at home on Friday and Saturday evenings always created great memories. She also loved traveling to Lake Somerville, Matagorda, and the Freeport Jetties for a good day of fishing. Natalie’s hobbies and special interests were growing a vegetable garden and cooking or canning the vegetable crop. She also enjoys working in her yard with her plants and doing the lawn. For many years, Natalie has collected antiques and enjoys going to Warrenton and Round Top for the antique fair. Again, we congratulate Natalie Elsie Silhavy on attaining the Grand Age of 96. Thank you, Sister Natalie, for your devotion to our SPJST Society for all these years. May God bless you and your family. —SPJST—

Harold Strand’s birthday was on June 1, but he celebrated his special day on June 2 at a country/western dance at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth with all his family in attendance. He has two children living in the area, and both were there plus all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Since Adele Strand is Helen Skrasek’s sister, Helen along with Gary and Debbie Skrasek, Ada Marie (Skrasek), Wendel Withrow, and myself were all invited. It was a fun afternoon, and Harold so graciously danced with all the ladies. But, I believe his favorite dance was with his greatgranddaughter. In a phone conversation with Tracy Horn who resides in Parkwood Care Assisted Center in Bedford, she talked about her relatives in Ennis and that apparently they all have gone to cell phones rather than land lines and how she missed talking with them. Tracy’s mother was a Matous from Ennis, and some relatives are Baraks. Tracy’s maiden name was Luza; she was raised in Bryan, and each year attends the reunion in Bryan. I attended the Sokol Slet last Sunday at Sokol Ennis, and in visiting with a M. Barak, one of the Ennis Czech beseda dancers, asked her if she knew Tracy Horn. She immediately called her husband over whose name is Allen Barak, and he did recall his mother talking about a cousin named Tracy Horn. I got his mother’s name (Helen Barak) and her cell phone number. I immediately called Tracy the next day. Hopefully, they have already talked. The reunion is coming up in Bryan, but Tracy feels she may not be able to go. At the end of May, I flew to Charlotte, North Carolina, to visit my friend Joyce Ehrenberger. I had taken lots of trips with her and her late husband Joe over the years, and we had lots of visiting to catch up on. We did a little side trip to Brevard, North Carolina. I certainly enjoyed the mountain drive and seeing Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock Falls. Thanks Joyce, for an enjoyable visit. Wednesday, June 26, 2019 States on May 18 and flew into Paris where they had a six-hour train ride to St. Jean Pied de Port. They picked up their Camino de France pilgrimage passports which allowed them to stay in hostels along the way. Next day was the first day to hike which was over the Pyrenees mountain range in the rain. I hear that this was a tough day for the 15.3 miles. Miles hiked each day between towns ran from a low of 10 miles to 19.5 miles. Of course, blisters on their feet surfaced, but it was known that one could ride the bus or take a taxi to the next town. I did hear that Mike did select this option on one of those long days. I also heard that an ice cold beer at the end of the day did take away some of the pain. Both sent a lot of photos of the trail, villages, and beautiful churches - both inside and outside. One photo was of a village fountain with two spouts, one marked “Agua” and other spout marked “Vino”. On the short days of hiking, they did manage to take care of hiker chores of cleaning up, laundry, and
grocery shopping, but it was always early to bed. Right now at this writing, they are nearing the end of the trail. I’ll write about the finish next time. So Until, Keep Smiling, Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—
Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth President Cathy Simmank opened the Tuesday, May 14, 2019, meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and welcomed our visitors. Janet Basham’s inspirational comments included submissions by Lydia Alholm and Lucy Martinez. Business then proceeded as usual. We had a very interesting speaker Leslie Kilton, who is associated with the Deaf Action Center and the State of Texas. She discussed telecommunica-
13
tion systems (phones) that are available at no charge through her office and the State. She stated that she was available to speak to anyone who had special needs while speaking on telephones. It was a worthwhile program and very interesting. All taxpayers in Texas are eligible for this service. The website is HLAA. Birthdays were celebrated with song, and plans for a “Christmas in July” event were discussed. Door prizes were given away, and the blessing for lunch was offered. We enjoyed the meeting and looked forward to gathering again in June. Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

The Jimbo Fisher Football Training was Sunday, June 2 to Tuesday, June 4, 2019. On the days of camp, I got to learn a lot such as techniques on stances and ways to get to the ball faster. While I
was there, I made a new friend name Mario. Mario was also the guy that was my roommate. Mario and I also shared pizza one night. He bought pizza then I would pay for the pizza the next night. Another thing we did at camp was play a game called Aggie Ball, which is basically the same thing as two-touch football. My team did okay. We got maybe fourth or fifth. We also all got to play on Kyle Field, which was very fun. So in conclusion, I had a blast at the camp. I also got to take a picture with the man, himself - Jimbo Fisher. My sister, brother, and I gave him Jeep wave shirts to match that day. He has a Jeep so we thought it would be cool to get him a Jeep shirt! The second thing we got him were Marvel swim shorts. My dad loves Marvel and anything superhero. Also speaking of Marvel, on Saturday night - the day before Father’s Day, my sister, my dad, and I went to the movies to go watch Marvel Avengers Endgame. It was really good but super long! After he opened his presents, my sister, my brother, my stepmom, and I went to eat at his favorite restaurant which was Old South Pancake House. Czech Republic musical experience set for July 27 Dear Friends, I would like to invite you to a special musical experience in the Czech Republic - your ancestral home. The first event is being held on Saturday, July 27, 2019, and is called Kosi na Vsi (The Blackbird in the Village) which is aimed at younger people and their families. This festival will be full of attractions and workshops for small children and their parents. On Sunday in the same place, there will be a brass music festival. This second event is organized for older people and for lovers of Czech traditional brass music. We would be very happy to receive you and prepare a very interesting program for further days which will be led by a guide in English or Czech language. We offer many possibilities for day trips in the surrounding countryside, Prague, or other beautiful locations. We are collaborating with the aristocratic family of Kinsky dal Borgo. This family for many centuries has had a big say in the historical and cultural life of the whole country. They are owners of both the baroque castle Karlova Koruna
VĚSTNÍK (Charles Crown) in Chlumec and Cidlinou and romantic castle Kost (Bone) in Eastern Bohemia. There is the possibility for overnight stay near or in these castles. Count Kinsky dal Borgo will be very pleased to invite you to his manor. Live the unique atmosphere, meet interesting people, and enjoy your time in the Heart of Europe. Looking to Catch a Bird? Welcome to an edition of SoundCzech, Radio Prague’s Czech language course in which you can learn Czech phrases with the help of song lyrics. Some days you may find yourself being convinced to do something, perhaps against your better judgement. If so, the Czech band ‘Kabát’ - ‘The Coat’ - has just the song for you called “Když ptáčka lapají.” In Czech, you will often hear the saying když ptáčka lapají, pěkně mu zpívají - when they are trying to trap a bird, they sing to him nicely. In other words, they are ready to tell the bird whatever it is that he wants to hear in order to get their way. ‘Kabát’ sings that když ptáčka lapají, pěkně mu zpívají a v jednom kuse lžou. This means that people often lie to get what they want. A liar - lhář - who makes empty promises which later lead to unrealistic expectations is said to be painting magpies on a willow tree - maluje straky na vrbě.

If someone promises you the world in return for a favor, you can say on mně sliboval hory doly, meaning that “he promised me the mountains and the valleys.” You may also use the expression “he promised me the blue from the sky” - sliboval mi modré z nebe. If you are not cautious enough you may fall into a trap - spadnout do pasti; or to use a more common expression naletět - which means to fall for something. Ušil na mně boudu means he set a trap for me; and sežral jsem mu to i s navijákem – means I swallowed the bait with the reel. In that case, you can say zůstali mi jen oči pro pláč - all I had left was eyes to cry with. ~ Clare Profous https://www.radio.cz/en/section/SoundCzech/looking-to-catch-a-bird ©1996 - 2019 Radio Prague

Visit the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple this summer Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center is located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, Texas. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is 254899-2935, and the website is czechheritagemuseum.org. The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center is a small niche museum located on the border of the central business district and the historic residence district of Temple. It is housed in a charmingly mosaic-tiled 1931 store front located on a main artery through town. Many Temple natives have fond memories of the space, when high school students would gather at the soda fountain of Northside Drug Store. Although the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center was established as a non-profit entity in 2000, the collection itself had been accumulating since 1963 under the name of SPJST Library, Archives and Museum.
