and learned the art of brewing beer from some of the finest beer makers in Europe, and the proof is in the product! Šteští Brewing Company currently produces seven beers year-round: Bohemian Rhapsody, Pivo Pils, Bohemian Lager, Blueberry Lager, Dark Lager, Kazbek Czech Ale, and Czexan Wheat as well as a variety of seasonal brews such as their Moravian Blackberry

raveling to the Piney Woods of East Texas has always been fascinating; the trees and foliage, the roads, the general landscape, the history, and the people are what make it so. A recent, leisurely, two-day sojourn into that part of our great state led to many new discoveries. The main reason for our trip was to treat Cindy Vrazel Strmiska’s parents, SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts members Alfred and Bernice Vrážel, to their longanticipated Christmas gift we arranged for them. Cindy is also a member of Lodge 15.
We first paid a visit to the Šteští Brewing Company near Lovelady, where their motto is Na vaše z draví a štěstí! (To your health and good luck!) Owners Dennis and Ana Gore greeted us warmly and served us several cold sips of their delicious, Czech-inspired craft beers. Brew Master Dennis studied
Lager, and Czerry Dark Lager, just to name a few. Should we have the pleasure to visit in person anytime soon just ask, and I’ll be sure and share with you my personal favorites! The couple’s small but expanding operation sits near their stately residence which is tucked away - down a hidden lane - far from the hustle and bustle of the big city life they abandoned in Houston, as evidenced by the free-range ducks, chickens, and rabbits that leisurely stroll about the property. Dennis and Ana were very eager and open to share their story of how it all got started, how their current operation functions, and the where’s/why’s/how’s of their Continued on Page 4.

Recent Trip Continued from Page 1. distribution efforts. Tastings and tours are by appointment only so be sure and contact them before you plan your visit; please tell them where you heard about them! I want to personally thank my good friend, “Chicago” Larry Hodek and his wife Jean for telling me about this wonderful place. To learn more about Šteští Brewing Company, visit online at StestiBrewingCompany.com.
Since we were in the area, we decided to make a slight detour and stop by 281 SPJST Road in Crockett and take a look at the “old” SPJST Lodge 74, Lovelady hall. I have very fond memories of the times I spent there with my father, the late Nick A. Morris (SPJST Věstník Editor 1962 to 1969 and SPJST Supreme Lodge President 1969 to 1984). Not only did I spend time there with him, since I was very active in the SPJST Youth Program, I also got to visit the hall on the occasions when Lodge 74, Lovelady hosted District Two Youth Achievement Days. In 2004, the hall and surrounding acreage was for sale as a commercial property. So in my capacity as thenSPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, I went along on a trip there to assess what shape the property was in and to visit with potential buyers. The hall is no longer a commercial property, but was purchased around 2012 by a very nice couple named Robert and Cyndy Keys, who now use it as their residence and indoor storage for some of their antique vehicles.
It was near dusk when we arrived, and our small group found the couple outside doing chores. The Keys met us
at their gate, adorned with an overhead sign that read, “Last Frontier.” We introduced ourselves and explained the reason for our visit. Without hesitation, Robert and Cyndy opened the gate, opened up their home, and gave us the grand tour! It was really intriguing to see what they have done with the property,
while at the same time recalling what it used to look like all those years ago. In its heyday, the hall was a vibrant gathering place for its lodge members and the community-at-large for lodge functions, weddings, reunions, dances, and even roller-skating! Speaking of dances, Alfred spoke fondly of how the Vrážels’ Polka Band played many dances there over a nearly five-year span.
Robert and Cyndy even used to operate a restaurant inside the hall, and recently hosted a large birthday party for Robert. It is worth mentioning that they removed the old stage (from the north end of the building) to reveal the beau-
tiful 12-foot fireplace that was added to the hall in the 1970s (during a hall expansion by membership), and rebuilt a beautiful, spacious wooden stage on the east side of the building. To learn more
about the history of SPJST Lodge 74, take a look on pages 218 and 219 in A History of the SPJST: a Texas Chronicle 1897 1980 by Nick A. Morris, affectionately referred to as “the red book.” Contact the SPJST Home Office on availability and how/where to obtain a copy. Our next stop was late in the evening at the Pint and Barrel in Palestine (Palestine was our target destination for our next day’s adventure; more on that in a bit). The Pint and Barrel had an impressive selection of local craft beers and beverages, and a diverse menu from which to choose. Lucky for us, they were open late and eager to serve us! Our dishes were flavorsome, affordable, and the service was efficient. You’ll find them online at pintandbarrel.com. The next day found us aboard the Texas State Railroad for a relaxing fourhour round trip from Palestine to Rusk
– our gift to Alfred and Bernice. Now, I’m sure you’re wondering why the 25mile trip from Palestine to Rusk took four hours. Well, the 1940s-era diesel engine pulls the train at a leisurely pace (about an hour and half of travel each direction) then there’s a 45 minute layover in Rusk where the crew spins the engine around on what they call a “turntable,” which places the engine on the other end of the train so that it can pull everyone back to Palestine.
In addition to the engine, all of the cars have been handsomely restored and refurbished to their original glory, which lent a special, vintage touch to our entire experience. Passengers can choose from a variety of cars on which to travel, and we chose the Presidential Class car which featured limited, living roomtype seating, a champagne toast at departure, table service for beverages and
light snacks, great views, access to an outdoor observation deck, and the freedom to move about the entire train. For more information, or to experience this state treasure for yourselves, logon to TexasStateRailroad.net.
We wrapped up our two-day trip with dinner at The Junction Steakhouse in Palestine. It is a very family-friendly establishment that has an indoor arcade and outdoor go-kart track to keep the youngsters entertained. The food was outstanding - especially the fried squash and jalapeño cakes! The owner even came by our table to make sure that we were happy and satisfied with our food and overall experience. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re out that way. Visit them online at mydogwoodjunction.com. Now, a few words about the day we left home for Palestine. I want to send a special thanks to the “gentleman” who shares my name, date of birth, and general description, for having those outstanding warrant(s) for his arrest. I thoroughly enjoyed being detained by two Franklin police officers for a roadside body search and interrogation. I know that Cindy and her folks were watching in nervous anticipation trying to figure out how much bail money they were going to need, and who would have to drive the rest of the way. Well . . . at least I got away with just a warning for speeding. Happy and safe travels, y’all! —SPJST—

SPJST experiences insurance growth, books capital losses in second quarter By Brian Vanicek SPJST President SPJST’s second quarterly report for 2019 was submitted to Texas Department of Insurance last week. An annotated version of the report appears at right. From a new business development perspective, SPJST again posted good numbers through mid-year, recording Insurance and Annuity Premiums for the six-month period of $6,928,738. This compares to $7,626,895 reported over the same period in 2018. Additionally, the Society posted net income investment income for the sixmonth period of $5,037,089. This compares with net investment income of $5,121,785 reported over the same period in 2018. Congratulations and a note of appreciation are in order for our SPJST sales force for their continued efforts to put good, new business on the books; likewise, investments are performing well. Conversely, you will also see that the Society posted a net loss of Net Realized Capital Gains of $2,348,552. This compares to a net loss of $261,598 reported over the same period in 2018. SPJST’s unallocated cash surplus remained essentially unchanged at $16,721,070. This compares favorably to the $16,871,163 reported over the same period in 2018. So, what was the reason for the capital gains loss, and why didn’t it have a greater impact on surplus? The short answer is that the capital gains losses from common stocks were already factored into the surplus. Losses in the common stock investment portfolio are factored in as they are experienced; however, they do not appear as losses to the Net Income until they are sold or otherwise dispersed from the investment portfolio. The losses that were recorded in the second quarter of 2019 were accumulated over a period of approximately 11 years. To keep that in perspective, it is important to acknowledge that during this same eight-year period, total assets of the SPJST increased from $185.5 million at year-end 2008 to
Wednesday, August 14, 2019 $245.1 million as of mid-year 2019, representing an increase of more than 32 percent. During this same time period, unallocated cash surplus increased from $13,022,948 at year-end 2008 to $16,721,070 as of mid-year 2019, representing an increase of more than 28 percent. As you may recall, the Supreme Lodge decided in January 2019 to secure the services of Wellington Management as the Society’s financial advisor. Wellington has a stellar reputation within the financial services sector and received unanimous support from Supreme Lodge members. During the second quarter — and at the direction of the Supreme Lodge — Wellington commenced the deployment of a conservative long-term investment strategy designed to enable SPJST to meet its future asset/liability and capital management requirements. The persistent low interest rate environment has had a notable impact on many segments of the economy, including the life insurance industry. Moving forward, the strategy, in part, has been to sell those common stocks which were carrying losses and/or others that could present problems in the future. Summarily, that resulted in a loss in Realized Capital Gains. On the flip side — and something that doesn’t appear on the balance sheet — in each case the lackluster investments were replaced by high-rated corporate bonds. On a related note, SPJST also purged its investment portfolio of several of its Brated bonds in the second quarter. In turn, the proceeds generated from the sale of these investments were likewise directed into high-quality corporate bonds. While SPJST’s Investment Policy Statement allows for investing in the stock market, the appeal of bonds is that they provide a much more predictable future cashflow for the Society. Simply stated, the process of rebalancing SPJST’s investment portfolio is all about taking the necessary steps which will ensure the long-term strength and viability of the Society. In the long term, achieving consistently positive results — on all fronts — will spring from an intelligent strategy and disciplined execution. Through its most recent actions in managing SPJST’s investment portfolio, the Supreme Lodge is sending an implicit message that the past is over and tomorrow is another day. A healthy SPJST culture is established and maintained by focusing on the right goals and advancing an organization that truly recognizes and builds upon its strengths. —SPJST—

∂ from the supreme lodge∂ 2016 Delegates to vote on 6 proposals in Ballot in Lieu of Special Convention As provided by Article VI, Section 12, Ballot in Lieu of Special Convention, the Supreme Lodge has voted unanimously to conduct this referendum providing for six by-law amendments. The wording of each amendment is shown on the ballot (and appears below) for each proposition as well as the reasons for the change. After review and study, a motion was adopted in the July Supreme Lodge meeting to submit this resolution to the delegates of the 32nd Convention to amend the following By-Laws: Article XX, Section 97; Article VII, Section 24; Article Vii, Section 26 (c.); Article XI, Section 60; Article IX, Section 49; Article IX, Section 43 (a.) and Article X, Section 51 (b.). Ballots have been mailed to the eligible delegates who served at the 2016 SPJST Convention. Delegates are asked to vote “FOR” or “AGAINST” each of the six proposals, sign the ballot, enter the lodge number, and enter the number of votes. The ballot must be mailed in the envelope addressed to Henry L. S. Jezek, CPA and postmarked or delivered to the Home Office no later than Tuesday, August 23, 2019. Do not place any other items in the ballot envelope. The Supreme Lodge recommends that you vote “FOR” each of the six proposals to amend our by-laws. Fraternally submitted, For the Supreme Lodge SPJST Leonard Mikeska Chief Financial Officer
Proposal No. 2 - To amend Article VII, Section 24. Resolved to amend Section 24 as follows to allow odd votes to be divided proportionally among the lodge’s delegates:
Proposal No. 1 - To amend Article XV, Section 97. Resolved to add following paragraph to end of Section 97:
Amend the first sentence in Section 26 (c) which currently reads: “Attended a majority of the regular meetings of the lodge during the three years preceding the Convention.” to read: “Attended a majority of the regular meetings of the lodge during one year preceding the Convention. Lodges meeting quarterly, majority would be two meetings.”
“If the SPJST’s reserves for any class of the SPJST’s benefit certificates becomes impaired, the Supreme Lodge Board of Directors may require the certificate holders to pay the SPJST an equitable proportion of the deficiency as determined by the Supreme Lodge Board of Directors. The aggregate amount for the impaired reserves may not exceed the total amount required to comply with section 885.408 of the Texas Insurance Code.” Reason: This is newly approved language passed by the Texas Legislature that is required to be included in the By-Laws of every Fraternal Benefit Society doing business in Texas. We need to add this to ByLaws to be in compliance.
“Votes. A lodge represented by its delegate or delegates is entitled to one vote for every adult member. Delegates from each lodge shall divide their lodge’s votes equally among themselves. In the event the votes do not divide equally among its delegates, the extra votes shall be assigned proportionally to all of the lodge’s delegates. (Example, a lodge with four delegates and 405 votes would result in each delegate having 101.25 votes.)” Reason: The current method of assigning odd votes to the “ . . . delegate receiving the highest number of votes . . . ” makes it impossible to develop any method of electronic voting and tabulation. Amending the by-law to allow proportional assignment of odd votes will allow development of timesaving vote tabulation and greatly reduce possibility of errors during the counting process. Proposal No. 3 - To amend Article VII, Section 26 (c). Resolved to amend this article requiring that a member must attend the majority of meetings during the three years preceding the Convention to be elected a delegate. Amend the article as follows:
Reason: Current by-law meeting attendance requirement of three years is too restrictive to new members or old members becoming active who may be well qualified otherwise. Some lodges are not able to elect a full slate of delegates because of not having enough members meeting the threeyear attendance requirement. Proposal No. 4 - To amend Article XI, Section 60. Official Publication Vestnik. Resolved to amend the last sentence of Section 60 to read as follows:
“The Vestnik will be published twice monthly and in color.” Reason: The amendment, if approved, allows for publication of the Vestnik twice monthly instead of weekly. The primary reason for the change is to increase efficiency. SPJST will expand its communication by integrating new media tools and strategies to increase brand relevance. After consulting with the Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication and the Publication Committee, the Supreme Lodge concluded that a twice monthly printed newspaper will be sufficient to continue to provide good communication with our members. Proposal No. 5 - To amend Article VIII Sections 29, 31, and 41 and Article IX Sections 49 and 50. Resolved to amend Sections 29, 31, 41, 49, and 50 by changing the name of Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services in all places that it appears to “Controller.” Reason: The only effective change here is changing the name of the position in Sections 29, 31, 41, 49, and 50 from “Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services” [Financial Secretary] to “Controller.” The name “Controller” better describes the position in more professional terms. The current position name is too long and cumbersome. Proposal No. 6 - IX, SUPREME LODGE OFFICERS, Section 43 (a.) to read as follows: Resolved to amend article “(a.) To be a member of SPJST for at least one year preceding the election or appointment.” Resolved to amend Article X, SUPREME LODGE DIRECTORS, Section 51 (b.) to read as follows: “(b.) Be an active member for at least one year prior to the time of election.” Reason: The effective change is reducing a three-year membership requirement to one year. In the case of Supreme Lodge Officers, the positions have become highly specialized requiring technical skills and the three-year membership requirement narrows the field of applicants too much. In the case of Directors, it appears that future regulations will impose the need for qualifications in Directors in experience and skill areas specified by regulators. We must be careful not to limit the field of qualified candidates by a long membership requirement. —SPJST—

Decorum at SPJST Lodge Meetings Meetings are an important part of SPJST’s business and social planning. In conducting the business of our Society, it’s important to show respect — to each other and to the fraternal ideals we seek to advance. The following is a suggested guideline to some of the things we can do to ensure that our lodge meetings provide an inviting platform for members to exchange their views and achieve solutions benefitting the lodge and organization.
• Come to the meeting with a positive attitude. • Treat members with respect before, during and after the lodge meeting. • Be prompt in arriving to the meeting and turn cell phones off or to vibrate. • If you must take urgent calls on the cell phone, please take your conversation outside. • Maintain your dignity and present yourself in a positive manner. • Have a strong agenda. This is part of being prepared. The President should have a good, strong agenda so that he or she can stay on track. If discussion gets off tracks, it is up to the President to get back on track. • Talk one at a time, waiting to be recognized by the President. • Limit side conversations. • Be patient when listening to others speak and do not interrupt them. • Members need to stay on the topic being discussed.
• When a topic or agenda item has been discussed fully, do not bring the same subject back up. • Don't make threats or rude comments. • Address any concerns about the discussion or the meeting with the President. It is the President’s job to keep the meeting on course and to keep order. • Be respectful of other people's ideas or situations when they talk. • A disruptive and/or intoxicated member has to be handled gently to avoid more disruption. A good way to deal with this to avoid the escalation of such behavior is for a couple of members to speak with the offending person privately and let him or her know that the behavior is unacceptable, since it is disrupting the meeting. If this proves to be ineffective, it may be necessary for the offended party(ies) to file a grievance as outlined in the SPJST By-Laws. • The lodge shall comply with all local, county or state laws governing smoking. If smoking is lawful, the lodge shall adopt rules and regulations regarding smoking during meetings and social functions. The rules and regulations governing smoking shall be considerate of all members and provide smoke free areas. It is recommended that smoking be prohibited during all meal functions.

Lodge 187 Round Rock members observe anniversary of moon landing
sey Evans, Kenneth Meyer, Bradley Scott Barron, Ty Roman, and Mallorie Roman. We ended with a great July potluck of hot dogs and all the fixings.
Hello! The July meeting started with Kadnce Meyer leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had many discussions of all the ongoing improvements and maintenance to the lodge. Thank you to Carla Krenek and Rubie Volek for the door prizes. We also discussed and voted “yes” for all to attend the District Two Fall Fun Day on Sunday, August 18 at Lodge 80, Holland. Entertainment was fascinating and done very well by Carla Krenek. Mrs. Carla talked about the 50-year anniversary of the Apollo moon landing. We learned that there was a Czech astronaut. Astronaut Eugene Cernan was of Slovak and Czech origin. Cernan died on January 16, 2017, at the age of 82. He was the last astronaut on the moon and also one of three people who flew to the moon twice. He has been in space three times: June 1966 when he attended the Gemini 9A mission; May 1969 with the Apollo 10 mission; and December 1972 for the Apollo 17 mission, which was the last one with a human crew that flew to the moon. Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth This month’s meeting of the Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth was Tuesday, July 9, 2019, with 29 members and one guest attending. While we were short in number and while we missed those of you who did not attend, it was an enjoyable meeting with a lot of chatting and sharing of hugs and laughter. President Cathy Simmank opened the meeting by leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance after which Vice President Janet Basham read an inspirational message given to her by Lydia Alholm. Sandi Celusniak also shared a meaningful short story with the group. Business proceeded with reports being given, and Marlene Bass announced that she sent get well cards to Carolyn Irby (who has just finished chemo and was with us looking beautiful with her smile), and Theresa Clay who has been in the hospital several times this month. We’re thinking of all of you who might not feel well at this time. Feel better soon. President Cathy announced that the staff at Ridgmar Place would be bring-
VĚSTNÍK ing lunch and snacks for our August meeting. We encourage all of you to come and enjoy the “freebies.” We understand they have a really nice facility, entertainment, and good food. And, in September, President Cathy is planning on making “homemade” ice cream for our picnic-themed meeting. I don’t think we’ll have any “ants” to deal with since it will be held inside. It was also determined that we would bring school supplies in August and September to be donated to an elementary school as yet to be determined. Last year, supplies were delivered to Castleberry Elementary. The meeting proceeded as hostesses Bennie Thieme, Norma McLendon, and Mary Ann Krivanek were thanked for setting up lunch. We appreciated all they did since they were short in number due to several illnesses. July birthdays were celebrated. Stanley Krenek (playing dominoes), Margaret Laymance, Cathy Simmank, and Sandi Celusniak were serenaded. To all of our members who had July birthdays, we send our best wishes for another year, and we hope to see you soon. Jon Durham announced Heritage Day for Lodge 92, Fort Worth would be Saturday, September 21. Keep the date in mind and plan on coming for an ‘ole time gathering. It will be fun with a cake walk, food, polka music, dancing, and other stuff.

Last of all, President Cathy led the group in organizing the “White Elephant Christmas in July” game. It was kind of wild! Some of our members couldn’t figure out what was happening, and that made it even more enjoyable hearing, “What?” “Huh?” “Why?” and “Oh, okay.” It really took us out of our comfort zone. We did have a couple of door prizes, but I did not have a chance to see what prizes the winners received. However, when the meeting was over, no one left

Good Grief News How long after the funeral ends will people stop checking- in? By Sabrina N. Young, CFSP Lodge 47, Seaton I was asked by someone recently who was experiencing grief and wasn’t used to people bombarding with phone calls, Facebook messages, and the mailing of sympathy cards. She asked me “Sabrina, when will they stop checking in?” I want to share with you our local customs of sympathy and how long it lasts. Now this is typically what I have seen while living in Bell County, Texas. A person who attends church will have either a women’s/men’s group, altar society, or someone from the church typically mail you a sympathy card. If you are listed in the church roster, most likely you will receive sympathy cards to your address provided in that roster. In the majority of churches, a pastor will personally visit or, at minimum, phone call the bereaved along with some of the peers in your support group. These visits and calls typically are done during the immediate processes of death and one or two times to follow-up after the funeral. Once you make the post on social media of your loss, you will get a lot of immediate feedback. The condolences will continue as long as your posts of your grief journey continues. Social media is a responsive technique! If you post on your page frequently about your grief journey then you will be tagged on other bereavement sites and quotes. If you are no longer needing or wanting these posts then I encourage you to kindly private message the person and let them know that you are doing well and no longer need the encouragements. This will let people know that you are okay and what you are needing currently during your grief transition. Then once you stop posting about your grief, they will stop also. Again, social media is responsive so they mimic from your postings. —SPJST —

Lodge 232, Houston Midtown members volunteer at Houston Food Bank
Jelisa and Clay Zapalac, both of Lodge 232, Houston Midtown, joined fellow members of Lodge 232 to volunteer at Houston Food Bank. “This was quite an experience on a Saturday morning,” Lodge 232 Vice President Rudolph Rusnak reports. “We were told that in total, more than 43,000 ‘weekend’ take-home bags were assembled for underprivileged students to take home on Friday afternoon so they had something to eat until they
came to school on Monday. The Houston Food Bank is America’s largest food bank in distribution leading hunger relief in 18 southeast Texas counties. Food is donated to the bank from all over the USA. This food bank is well organized and efficient - that is why it is so successful. Our Lodge 232 is small in size, but we are proud to have volunteered. We are going back again soon and suggest that other lodges do the same.”

State Queen’s Notebook Dear Věstník Readers, It has been such an amazing month so far! On Saturday, August 3, 2019, I attended State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) where I participated in six events including sewing, photography, needlework, science and education, individual talent, and royalty. I received third place in sewing and individual talent, and I received first place in science and education. My lodge also participated in the scrapbook category and received third place. The most exciting part of State YAD to me was the royalty competition. After reciting my speech and answering two interview questions, my nerves were high, eager to find out the results. I am so thankful and honored to say that I was crowned the 2019-2020 SPJST State Queen! Ever since I was little, I dreamed about this day. I am so thrilled for the year ahead of me! I am very grateful for all the people in my life who have helped me reach this title. I would like to say a few words of thanks to a few people. Thank you to my parents, who helped me make sure I knew my speech and the answers to all the questions. Thank you to my lovely sister April for always being there for me every step of the way and being the incredible role model I have looked up to for my whole life. If I could write out “thank you” to everyone I thank, the list would be too long. My last “thank you” for now would be to you, the Věstník readers. Thank you for coming along on my journey through SPJST. I promise, there is more to come. I am forever grateful for each and every one of you. I am so overjoyed for what is to come with Duchess Aubrey Roberts, State King Luc Marcaurele, and Duke Hudson Riha! Until next time, Misty Dvořák, age 15 2019-2020 SPJST State Queen —SPJST—

State Fraternal Director presents August youth news SPJST Camps It was another amazing summer! Our camps were structured differently this year, and many youth said they enjoyed the camps. Now it is time to start planning and improving the program for 2020. I heard from many of the LITs. They enjoy being with the younger youth during the junior sessions. I saw many changes in our teens this year. I am very proud of all of them. They are very responsible and do commend our respect; after all, they are our future. I know change can sometimes be challenging. Let me assure you we will not ever have back-to-back camps again. DYCs, Camp Kubena Director Rob Clift, and myself have all agreed to keeping some days between the two sessions in July, and LIT camp will be at the end of June. 2020 SPJST Camp Dates LIT/Teen Camp Wednesday, June 24 to Sunday, June 28 Junior Camp Session 1 Wednesday, July 15 to Sunday, July 19 Junior Camp Session 2 Wednesday, July 22 to Sunday, July 26

Best wishes go to all our youth at State Youth Achievement Day. Although I was busy. I really enjoyed viewing your crafts and watching your talent. Congratulations to all the winners and to our 2019-2020 State Royalty Court. I look forward to working with you this year. I am looking at some changes to the state royalty program. Changes that will give you the opportunity to learn and grow as a young adult, with the guidance of your DYC, President Vanicek, and myself. Watch your Vestnik for these updates.
VĚSTNÍK Grandparents Day Even though Grandparents Day is over a month away — Sunday, September 8 — having this in the August newsletter might give youth clubs a chance to plan something special for grandparents in their lodge. Remember all the wonderful grandparents who have been so special in your lives. It’s also a day for families. Everyone is somebody’s grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day. It can be a time to discover one’s roots and even a time to learn patience, understanding, and appreciation for the elderly — the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations.
Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at the SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration, and you could be the winner! If you have any questions or would like to make purchases for your lodge or organization, please give us a call at the SPJST Home Office at 254-773-1575 or 800-727-7578, and we’ll be happy to work with you! Westfest This year, the Westfest parade and festivities will be on Saturday, August 31 at the fairgrounds in West. This is also when the 2019-2020 State Royalty Court makes its first public appearance. Watch the Vestnik for more details. Vestnik Project The September Vestnik Project will be about National Assisted Living Week. Ask your youth and parents to go to a local assisted living center and visit with the members. This year’s theme is “Capture the Moment.” Fall District Youth Counselor Meeting The 2019 Fall District Youth Counselor (DYC) meeting will be Friday, October 11 to Sunday, October 13 outside of Gruene, Texas, on the Guadalupe River. During the meeting, DYCs talk about guidelines for 2020 YAD constructed items (clay or dough molded), dessert (cookies), and photography (flowers). We also discuss camp, next year’s theme as well as any additions to the youth club handbook that may help things run a little smoother. Next year’s theme is determined by a leadership group discussion. District One will be leading that discussion group. Youth leaders, if you have any items you would like your DYC to discuss at our meeting, please submit your request in writing to your DYC. This way, your voices can be heard and addressed. SPJST Car Show Fundraiser The SPJST Foundation is giving away an incredible MZ Magnum 48inch Zero-turn Mower with 725cc Kohler Engine on Saturday, October 5
District Two hosts successful Youth Achievement Day Dear Members and Vestnik Readers, A wonderful and exciting day was held for our youth on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at Lodge 80, Holland. Thank you, Lodge 80, for allowing us to have District Two Youth Achievement Day (YAD) at your lodge. To all members who helped in so many ways, you are so much appreciated. The beautifully decorated stage for our youth to show off their talent and royalty speeches was awesome! To all families, friends, and guests, you were a tremendous audience. Your attendance showed your love and support for not only each participating youth, but your support for the SPJST Youth Program. We were very proud to have 190 entries this year. It was good to see six of our eight youth clubs in District Two

Back to School Safety Tips Riding the Bus School bus transportation is safe. In fact, buses are safer than cars! Even so, last year, approximately 26 students were killed and another 9,000 were injured in incidents involving school buses. More often than not, these deaths and injuries didn't occur in a crash, but as the pupils were entering and exiting the bus. Remember these safety tips: • Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street. • Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter. • When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are back away from the bus. • Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus. • Stay away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal that it's okay to approach. • Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required to fol low certain rules of the road concerning school buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!
Walking and Biking to School Even if you don't ride in a motor vehicle, you still have to protect yourself. Because of minimal supervision, young pedestrians face a wide variety of decision making situations and dangers while walking to and from school. Here are a few basic safety tips to follow: • Mind all traffic signals and/or the crossing guard -- never cross the street against a light, even if you don't see any traffic coming. • Walk your bike through intersections. • Walk with a buddy. • Wear reflective material...it makes you more visible to street traffic.
Riding in a Car • • • •
You might have heard before that most traffic crashes occur close to home ... they do. Safety belts are the best form of protection passengers have in the event of a crash. They can lower your risk of injury by 45%. You are four times more likely to be seriously injured or killed if ejected from the vehicle in a crash. Everyone needs to be buckled up properly. That means older kids in seat belts, younger kids in booster seats and little kids in child safety seats.
Read the information on back to school safety and answer the questions below. 1. Riding in a car is safer than riding in a school bus. T or F 2. When entering and exiting a school bus list three safety tips that should be followed. (Write on back of page if needed.) _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ 3. When walking or riding a bike to school you should mind all __________ signals and/or the __________ guard-never cross the street against a light, even if you don’t see any __________ coming. 4. What a variety of talented youth . . . some were on the serious side; others put so much joy in their act that you wanted to join in on the fun; and the ones that were just so cute you wanted to give them a hug! I was more than honored to introduce our 2018-2019 SPJST State/District Two King Nash Campbell, escorted by his mom Kim Campbell, as one of the masters of ceremonies for the program. Following Nash to the stage was his State/District Two Duke Tyson Bilbrey, escorted by his mom Chelsea Bilbrey. As always, he had his cute little grin! (Love ya, Tyson!) State/District Seven Queen Kelly House also took the stage
to serve as one of the masters of ceremonies. Thank you, Kelly! We enjoyed having you! Melanie introduced the royalty. Contestants were honored to have their parents as escorts. Contestants were queens Brooke Newsom of Lodge 48, Beyersville, escorted by her mom Michelle Newsom, and Emma Regan of Lodge 47, Seaton, escorted by parents Melanie and Chris Regan; kings Jaysen Burt of Lodge 47, Seaton, escorted by parents Deanna and Jason Burt, and Koby Stone of Lodge 47, Seaton, escorted by parents Donna and Shane Stone; duchesses Tynlee Beckendorf of Lodge 182, Falls County, escorted by parents Jason and Becky Beckendorf, and Sydney Bilbrey of Lodge 47, Seaton, escorted by mom Chelsea Bilbrey; and dukes Everhett Bartek of Lodge 47, Seaton, escorted by mom Amber Bartek, and Travis Ordogne of Lodge 47, Seaton, escorted by parents Chris and Emily Ordogne.
Each of these four king and queen royalty contestants gave a fabulous speech on the topic “Diving Deep With SPJST.” The answers to both of their interview questions, speech content and delivery, and stage presence was unbelievable. I am so proud of each of you! The results were: District Two King Koby Stone (47) First Runner-Up King Jaysen Burt (47) District Two Queen Emma Regan (47) First Runner-Up Queen Brooke Newson (48) Congratulations! You all make District Two so proud! Crafts, individual talent, group talent, scrapbook, and posters were all awesome. What talent you all have! All participants - whether you took home a

Dear Readers, Last week Tuesday through Friday, I had cheer camp. We went to University of North Texas, and we spent the night in the dorms. It was really cool being in the dorms especially since my friend Leslie was my roommate. At cheer camp, we had UCA cheerleaders/staff members teaching us and telling us everything we need to learn in cheer. They taught us cheers, chants, stunts, dances, and a lot of safety rules. The dancing was my team’s favorite. On the third day of camp, we had a big circus-themed pep rally. My whole team was different circus animals, and some were clowns. My coach was the ringmaster. I also made really good friends with three girls from a different team - Kily, Kayla, and Maddie. Cheer camp was super fun, and I’m happy the rest of my team enjoyed it as well. Super summer destination: Czech Heritage Museum, Temple Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center (CHMGC) is located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, Texas. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is 254-899-2935, and the website is czechheritagemuseum.org. CHMGC is a small niche museum located on the border of the central business district and the historic residence district of Temple. It is housed in a charmingly mosaic-tiled 1931 store front located on a main artery through town. Many Temple natives have fond memories of the space, when high school students would gather at the soda fountain of Northside Drug Store. Although CHMGC was established as a non-profit entity in 2000, the collection itself had been accumulating since 1963 under the name of SPJST Library, Archives, and Museum. A call for donations in the organization’s Vestnik weekly newspaper resulted in an almost immediate inundation of items from Czech families around the state. For many years, these items were housed in the basement SPJST Home Office and curated by volunteers. In 2009,
Annual Homecoming
