It was a lot of hard work, but very rewarding.” More on page 22.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. A new school year has begun! Best wishes to all students, teachers, and school personnel for an inspiring year. Here’s an interesting story (author unknown) with a lesson to be learned! One evening four college students went out to the movies instead of studying. They paid no mind to the test they had scheduled for the next day and didn’t study. In the morning, they hatched a plan to get out of taking their test. They covered themselves with grease and dirt and went to the Dean’s office. Once there, they said they had been to a wedding the previous night and on the way back, they got a flat tire and had to push the car back to campus. The Dean listened to their tale of woe and thought. He offered them a retest three days later. They thanked him and accepted his offer. When the test day arrived, they went to the Dean. The Dean put them all in separate rooms for the test. They were fine with this since they had all studied hard.

SPJST Scholarship programs help support tomorrow’’s’ leaders By Brian Vanicek SPJST President One of the many benefits SPJST offers to its members is the Scholarship Program. In 2019, 49 General Scholarships and 11 Leadership Grants were awarded. In addition, at the 2019 State Youth Achievement Day, five District Merit Scholarships, one State Merit Scholarship, and two Royalty Scholarships were awarded for a total of 68 scholarships and grants presented for the year. The SPJST Scholarship is more than a passing trend: Since the program’s inception, more than $1.6 million has been awarded. General and Technical Scholarships are funded through an annual allocation by SPJST and through voluntary contributions received through our 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive and memorial donations received throughout the year. One hundred percent of every donation you make to the SPJST Scholarship Program goes to helping a young person – and 100 percent is tax deductible. Donations can be made year-round in the name of the donor, anonymously, or in honor of a loved one, leaving a legacy of compassion. 2020 Applications Available Now Applications for scholarships are sent out from September through January upon request. The Fraternal Department must receive the completed application and all requested information by February 1, 2020. The recipients will be announced in April. The following scholarships are available through the program:

*Must be an active SPJST to apply for the Leadership To receive a General Schol *Leadership Grant Applicat Office Fraternal Departmen or download an application

• General and Technical Scholarships – For all SPJST members. • Leadership Grants – For active SPJST youth club members – An applicant may only apply for this grant in his/her senior

VĚSTNÍK year of high school. (*Note: Active youth club members are strongly encouraged to apply for the General Scholarship (or Technical Scholarship if attending a technical school) and the Leadership Grant; however, applicants are only eligible to receive one. All interested SPJST members who wish to apply for a scholarship must meet the following criteria: • Have an SPJST insurance certificate in force for at least one full year as of February 1; if the membership is in the form of an annuity, the amount must be at least $10,000. • Be a full-time student. • Maintain a valid SPJST insurance certificate and/or annuity for the duration of the scholarship payout period. • Be a high school graduate or equivalent. • Attend an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or technical college – as designated by one of the six regional accrediting bodies in the United States. SPJST Endowed Scholarships Provide a Lasting Memorial Donors who wish to make a positive difference in the life of a young person and establish a lasting memorial may wish to establish or to contribute to an SPJST Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship may be established in your name or the name of the individual you wish to

h o n o r . SPJST End o w e d Scholarships may be established starting at $10,000. By definition, an endowed scholarship is one in which the Vernell Foyt principle remains intact and only the interest is awarded each year. Once established, your scholarship will be managed by SPJST. Your endowment creates a permanent funding source that will grow over time and will support deserving students today and in the future. Currently, SPJST has 12 endowed scholarships in place, honoring the memory of the following members: Ben and Martha Trcalek (1), Ben F. Trcalek, Jr. (1), Bessie Petr (1), Denisse Wuensche (1), Ernest A. Wentrcek, Sr. (1), Frank E. Klinkovsky, Sr. (1), Gladys Yates (1), Johnnie R. Krizan (1), Myles Marek (1), Otto Hanus (2), and SPJST District Six (1). Efforts are currently underway to establish an endowed scholarship to honor the memory of longtime SPJST Lodge 88, Houston fraternalist Vernell Fojt who passed away on August 9 of this year. To help facilitate collection efforts, a PayPal account has been set up under the “Program” tab of the SPJST.org website. This innovation will enable contributors to donate online by credit card. SPJST Scholarship Applications For The 2019-2020 School Year Available Now! General Scholarship and Leadership Grant* Applications are available How To Apply call the SPJST Home Office at 800-727-7578 or download an application at www.spjst.org *Must be an active Youth Club member to apply for the Leadership Grant.

Applications and all required information must be received by the Home Office on or before February 1, 2020.

accounts are concurrently being set up for all existing SPJST endowed scholarships and should be operable during the first week of September. In establishing an SPJST Endowed Scholarship, you also have the opportunity to set the criteria for your SPJST Endowed Scholarship. For example, you may wish to direct your scholarship fund to reward high achievement students who are pursuing a specific field of study. Other criteria for you to consider are specific colleges or universities, areas of academic interest or extracurricular involvement, community service, or hometown. Please know that in establishing restrictive criteria, you will be limiting the pool of qualified recipients. The Gift That Keeps Giving . . . SPJST Endowed Scholarships differ from others in that they are truly the gift that keeps giving. Instead of the entire amount of the donation being awarded outright, the total amount of the endowment is invested. With appropriate investment and spending policies, the endowment’s staying power is preserved. Each year, only a portion of the invested income earned is awarded while the remainder is added to the original principal. Endowed scholarships are a wonderful way to honor a loved one or link your legacy with the future. The minimum gift needed to establish a named, endowed SPJST scholarship is $10,000. This amount can be paid all at once or in payments. Once the fund reaches the $20,000 amount, the scholarship will be awarded annually in the honoreeʼs name. Until $20,000 is reached, the interest gained is reinvested in the fund. At the primary donorʼs request, an endowed scholarship will be awarded every other year, provided that the endowment balance totals at least $10,000. There are numerous ways to fund an endowed SPJST scholarship, including outright gifts of cash, bequests, securities, life insurance, retirement assets, or properties. Providing funding through inclusion in a will or another estate planning vehicle such as charitable gift annuity, pooled income fund, charitable remainder trust, personal property, and real estate is also possible to increase the level of an established scholarship. For assistance with establishing an endowed scholarship or any related questions, please contact me at 800-727-7578 or vanicek@spjst.com. —SPJST—

District seven director celebrates birthday at corpus getaway; anticipates convention

District Seven Director Bob Bayer is serenaded by his family and attendees at the Corpus Christi Getaway on Friday, August 9. Brother Bayer celebrated his 80th birthday at the event.

I want to thank all of you members and friends who attended the Corpus Christi Getaway on Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10. Again, it was a very good turnout. I really want to thank all of you for attending my 80th birthday. This was the largest birthday party I ever had. Thank you to my new friends and my old friends for attending. This was a surprise because I thought that my family was going to have a small party at my table. They kept this a secret. Now for business. This board is a pleasure to work with. I like it when they ask me questions about the past. I try to answer their questions. I am noted for some of the phrases I come up with. One of my first phrases was - “What next?” which the board picked up on. I came up with a new phrase in the July board meeting. It goes something like this - “Look out future, we’re coming!”

This coming convention will be one of great interest and changes in SPJST. I hope that the delegates will be well versed in what will happen. It is time that some of the changes take effect. Some of these should have been done years ago. We need to elect people that will get the job done for SPJST. We do not need to elect someone just because he or she is popular. They might be popular with some of the delegates, but they might not know enough about SPJST. We need leaders that will grab the bull by the horns and go forward. That’s why I say, “Look out future, we’re coming!” Fraternally, Bob Bayer District Seven Director P.S. I hope all of you delegates have voted for the six changes to the by-laws that we have asked for. These are very important. —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, August 8, 2019, at Sokol Club Room. The coffee was made, the tables arranged, and we stretched the quilt we started at Ellis County Quilt Show at Sokol Hall on July 19. I want to thank everyone who came to help that day. We had a good group. I also want to thank everyone who came today to quilt, but we still haven’t finished it. We will quilt on it again in September and work on two baby quilts. Come, everyone. We need you all. At lunch time, President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed our wonderful sandwiches, salad, chips, and dessert for lunch. They were all so good. I wish I had a sandwich now! After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the “Our Father” for all our sick members. Treasurer Dolores gave her report, and Dee Anderson read the minutes of our last meeting. Both were approved. President Irene introduced and welcomed two new members - Regina Lummus and Karen Woolheater. We hope you both enjoyed yourselves, and please come again. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Dorothy Kudrna, Kay Lynn Kovar, and Dee Anderson. We wish you many more. A thinking of you card was signed for Pat Fowler. We hope you are feeling okay by now. Ginny read two funny stories. She

gets us all laughing, which we need. President Irene announced next month, we will quilt our Christmas quilt and two baby quilts. Come everyone! We thank Libbie Vrla for purchasing and donating paper plates and cups to our Circle. Libbie said since she doesn’t quilt, she will donate these items. If I remember correctly, Kay Lynn said she will bring tea in September. We do have wonderful members. Thank you all! Libbie also said she talked with Joyce Ehrenberger, who is in North Carolina. They had a nice, long visit. Joyce sends everyone hello! President Irene read a full page of quilting bad habits, and guess what - I have lots of them. Our 50-50 dollar winner was Kay Lynn Kovar. Congratulations! We will serve regular food as always, we will quilt, and meet on Thursday, September 12 at the usual time. Kay Lynn Kovar made a motion to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Maggie Holy. Thank you, everyone, for coming and quilting. Stay well, happy, and cool. See you September 12. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

In Memoriam In Memory of Charles Wilkerson Charles “Weldon” Wilkerson, 87, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2019, at his daughter and son-in-law’s home in Pearland, Texas. Weldon was born to Carl Willie Wilkerson and Amanda Abigail Collins-Wilkerson on February 21, 1932, on the family farm near Hope. As a young child, he Weldon Wilkerson was baptized in a river in the Baptist faith tradition. Growing up in the Hope-Yoakum area of Texas, he loved to ride horses and hunt with his father. Due to the tomato crop failure, the family was forced to move in the mid-1940s to Galveston. It was here where Weldon attended and graduated from Ball High School in 1950. While living on the island, he saw Marjorie Lee Meyer at school and fell in love at first sight. They dated for five years and married. After the devastation of Hurricane Carla in 1961, they moved to Angleton and later, Pasadena. An excellent provider for his family, Weldon worked as an office manager for 32 years for the Texas Employment Commission starting in Galveston, and later, in Pasadena where he retired 32 years ago. Prior to that, he also worked as a soda fountain jerk at Farb’s Drug Store in Galveston as well as a bank teller at John Hutchins Sealy National Bank, along with other odd jobs. Endowed with a strong work ethic, he was a witness to those who were from America’s greatest generation. An exemplary citizen, he was invited to be an Ambassador by the Mayor of Pasadena. He also proudly served in the Texas National Guard and United States Army Reserves for many years respectively. Weldon and Marjorie’s children are Charles Ray Wilkerson, Sondra Schaaf, and Father Wayne Wilkerson, affectionately known as “the caboose.” Strongwilled and in control until the end, he led the family by example. He always placed his wife first in his life, living by the motto that “when mama’s happy, every-

body’s happy.” Weldon married Marjorie, his high school sweetheart, on February 9, 1952, at First Lutheran Church in Galveston. A few years ago, while attending a wedding in Round Top, he gave wise advice to the newlyweds, saying, “Never go to bed mad and marry your best friend” - a mantra for life that he lived by. Weldon and Marjorie enjoyed 67 years of happy marriage, most of which they lived in Pasadena (19612012). He treasured being Paka and grandpa to his grandchildren and those whom he dearly loved as his own - Robert, Kevin, Stefano, Victoria, Madelyn, and Jacquelyn. Through the example of his wife and her parents, who were devout Lutherans, Weldon wanted to raise the family under one faith. And so, on the same Sunday that his daughter Sondra was baptized, he was confirmed into the Lutheran faith. A man of faith and trust in God, he was a founding member of Peace Lutheran Church in Pasadena, and an active member of the Peace Lutheran Brotherhood, Kiwanis Club-Pasadena, SPJST Lodge 172, Pasadena, T.P.E.A., Prime Timers, Sunshiner’s, and most recently, Trinity Lutheran Church in Frelsburg. He was preceded in death by parents Carl and Abbie; sister who was stillborn; and brother Walter Ray Wilkerson. Weldon is survived by children Charles Ray Wilkerson (Debbie), Sondra Schaaf (Stacy), and Father Wayne Wilkerson; grandchildren Brian Sr. (Tonja), Darren, Emma, and Tyler; great-grandchildren Susie (Austin), Brian Jr., and Kayla; great-great grandson Easton; brother-in-law Ferdinand Leo Meyer Jr.; sister-in-law Sue Wilkerson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was Sunday, August 25 at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus from 5 to 9 p.m. A vigil for the deceased was at 7 p.m. The funeral service was Monday, August 26 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Frelsburg, followed by the rite of Christian burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 245, New Ulm, Texas 78950. —SPJST—

Lillian had two favorite Bible verses that meant more and more to her as she neared the end of her life: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” —Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’” —John 11:25-26 (NIV) She was a member of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard.

Good Grief News Now That My Husband is Gone, it was like he took all my friends and social life with him! By Sabrina N. Young, CFSP Lodge 47, Seaton “Now that my husband is gone, it was like he took all my friends and our social life with him!” I completely understand this as I have seen it time and time again. We have gone through various stages in our life that are very similar. Think back to high school when you had a falling out with a friend in your circle. You found yourself either changing your whole circle of friends because it was too awkward to stay in the same group, or you outgrew your friendship. Just like when a spouse passes away, it can be awkward for the whole group since they could be closer to your spouse. It could be awkward because they are not sure how to adjust to the loss. It was always a couples’ gathering, and now you feel as the third wheel, which means you have outgrown your friendship. I want you to know that it is okay to move on. It is okay to stay and reform yourself. I encourage you to find yourself after the transition of the loss. It will take time. We have grown into who we are because of our spouse, and without them, we feel utterly lost. Take this time to redevelop yourself and find what inspires you to be you. This could be relying on that social friendship or moving on to another group that brings out a new you. Whatever you decide to do - either trying to find yourself within your friends or venturing off - let your friends know so they can support you. If you would like to have more encouragement, please contact me at 254-251-0099 for transition assistance and grief journey stepping stones. I am a Certified Funeral Service Practitioner and a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. —SPJST —

2018 State Duchess shares exciting year

As the 2018-2019 SPJST State Duchess, I had a blast with SPJST and State Queen Kelly House. We were in the Belton Fourth of July Parade. We helped out in La Grange at the Czech museum; met many people; we went to camp; and had fun at District Seven Youth Achievement Day. I want to thank Kelly for choosing me as her duchess and for making it a very special year. She is really kind and sweet, and I had the best time hanging out with her. Kelly is an awesome role model and is someone I look up to. I want to be just like her when I grow up! Good luck, Kelly. I will miss you and our fun together! Thank you, SPJST, for your support. Lodge 20, Granger Youth Club participates in Lights of HOPE Lodge 20, Granger Youth Club is participating in a very special event. It is called Lights of HOPE. We are honoring those whose lives have been touched by cancer. We decorated a bag. It is being sent to Washington, D.C., for the big event on September 10, 2019. More than 33,000 Lights of HOPE bags bearing the names of those touched by cancer will circle the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial in an experience to fight back against cancer. About Lights of HOPE Lights of HOPE began in 2011 at the

National Leadership Summit and Lobby Day. 1,200 bags lined the Capitol’s Reflecting Pool that year celebrating the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network’s (ACS CAN) 10th anniversary. In 2012, 7,000 Lights of HOPE bags lit up the Capitol in honor of cancer patients, survivors, and loved ones lost across the United States. 2013 gave way to a record 14,000 Lights of HOPE, and during the ceremony, ACS CAN honored the American Cancer Society’s 100th year with a birthday cake recognizing the many accomplishments achieved together. 2015 marked the fifth anniversary,

and Lights of HOPE boasted a display of 20,000 lights. While it was a very rainy event, hundreds braved the elements including Celgene, a returning sponsor for a second year. In 2018, the event was held on the steps in front of the historic Lincoln Memorial, displaying over 33,000 Lights of HOPE around the Washington Monument Reflecting Pool. Join us in 2020 We hope all youth clubs will consider taking part in this event next year. For more information, visit fightcancer.org. Sterling Marshall, age 12 —SPJST—

Lodge 154, Fort Worth Youth Club Joins Hands to Beautify Property at Evergreen Life Services

Lodge 20, Granger youth bakes cake for fall fun day I am getting ready for the fall fun day tomorrow. I am baking a cake with my aunt Kathy. It is for the cake walk. I wish I could keep it. Hopefully, I will win it! Sterling Marshall age 12 —SPJST—

Lodge 154, Fort Worth Youth Club was given the opportunity to help at Evergreen Life Services for Join Hands Day. We were able to help paint tables and bikes. We planted new plants and moved gigantic pots on the side of the building to the front. After that, we went inside to meet some of the participants in “everyone matters.” There, we could talk about how this organization works and what the purpose is, to allow people with special needs to have something they can do to

help, work on projects to fill bags for nut/bolt/screw manufacturers, or to develop their creativity even more. They made us root beer floats to thank us for all we did. We then went to Cici’s Pizza for lunch. It was a lot of hard work, but very rewarding. I hope we get to go back again some day! Holly Jones, age 13 Reporter —SPJST—

BROTHERHOOD

Lynette Urbanovský připravuje další číslo věstníku a potřebuje zprávy a články.

—SPJST—

CHM presents Sept. 10 Czech Film Night in Belton The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center will present the Czech film Golden Sting for the September Czech Film Night and Matinee at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10, 2019, at The Beltonian Theatre, 219 East Central in Belton. Admission is free. Donations for the Museum will be accepted. For more information, contact CHMGC Executive Director Susan Chandler at 254-8992935 or czechheritagemuseum@gmail.com. Film Synopsis The 2018 Czech film, Zlatý Podraz (Golden Sting), tells the true story of the Czechoslovak national basketball team during the historically tumultuous period of 1938 to 1951. It is based on the book They Were Not Afraid of Their Courage, by Jakub Bažant and Jiří Závozda. Small roles are played by some of the former team members, including Jiří Welsch, who was drafted by the

Philadelphia 76ers. The story plots a path to the 1946 European championship in Switzerland. Titled “FIBA EuroBasket 1946,” it was organized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). It was the first European championship held since 1939 due to World War II and the beginning of the use of the jump shot in Europe. The Czechoslovaks had come in third at the very first championship held in 1935. This was remarkable since basketball had only recently been introduced in the country. A healthy YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) existed with the Sokol athletic movement. Mormon missionaries from the United States, hoping to learn the language and

culture, taught sports at the YMCA Palace in Prague and at YMCA camps. The YMCA Palace was a meeting place for the resistance movement during Nazi occupation. Many resistance fighters were recruited there. The underground periodicals and leaflets were printed there, including the Czech Courier and V Boj (In Combat) magazines.

Nazi troops took over the building in 1941. It was severely damaged in 1945, but United States YMCA funded a restoration. Activities resumed until it was abolished in 1951 by the communist regime. In 1991, the palace was returned to the YMCA and restored. It is an active athletic center today. A plaque commemorating three secretaries of the YMCA who died as participants in the anti-Nazi resistance during World War II was installed in the lobby. This film reveals interesting historical situations by weaving them into the story lines of a team of young men bonding to overcome enormous odds, a touching romance and a close-knit family. Some of the most important points are treated with subtlety and understatement, as is typical in Czech literature. Czech audiences, already keenly aware of the significance and historical context, will not need an explanation. So the historically-inclined will want to watch for clues for what is happening on the broader political stage at the time. Much of the film was shot at Prague’s Industrial Palace, Vystaviste, built in 1891 and one of the first iron buildings in Prague. It was inspired by the 1889 Paris World’s Fair, when the Eiffel Tower was built. The small copy of the Eiffel Tower on Petrin Hill was built at the same time. Beautifully filmed in sepia tones, the visual imagery

is matched with a lush musical score. The film Zlatý Podraz can be found translated many different ways across the internet, including Golden Sting, Golden Ticket, Golden Betrayal, Golden Trick, Golden Joke, and Golden Dirty Trick. —SPJST—
