SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration
77 Saturday, October 5 77
The 14th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration on Saturday, October 5 will be filled with classic cars, arts/crafts, food, music, Czech heritage, kids’ activities, and family fun at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall! Star Hall is located at 10842 State Highway 53, seven miles east of Temple in the community of Seaton. The event opens to the public at 9 a.m. Meet Miss Texas Special guest is Miss Texas 2019 Chandler Foreman. Chandler is a 22-year-old senior at the University of North Texas pursuing a degree in broadcast media with a minor in communications. Her talent is playing the flute. During her 12month speaking tour, she will make more than 250 appearances and speak before over 100,000 people about the Texas Cares for

Children Program, the Children’s Miracle Network, and her personal platform “The Leader Within.” Some interesting facts about Chandler: she was born with 12 fingers, and she can play three instruments. She has been the entertainment anchor for three UNT television shows, designed “Queens Have No Size,” was in the Houston Youth Philharmonic, and National Elite All-American in Track and Field. 200 Cars Anticipated Car show registration begins at 8 a.m. The show is organized into 40 classes. Vehicles will be independently judged, and more than 100 trophies will be awarded. Special trophies will also be presented to Miss Texas’ choice and the Continued on Page 7

Let’s celebrate Czech Heritage Month!
Czech Heritage Month in Texas is about to begin, and we are so excited to celebrate! We will kick off the month in a big way at the 14th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration on Saturday, October 5 in Seaton, Texas, which is seven miles east of Temple on Highway 53. The event was originally scheduled for May, but the spring rains caused us to postpone the event twice. So what better time to host a Czech Heritage Celebration than October! A big shout-out to Lodge 47, Seaton and its members for hosting this event at Star Hall. We enjoy working with the lodge and appreciate the use of their beautiful facility and grounds. We invite everyone to come on out and enjoy Saturday, October 5 at Star Hall. Many vendor booths will be offering unique items. It’s a perfect opportunity to start your Christmas shopping! Booths are open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Music starts at 10 a.m. Beseda dancers and Miss Texas will perform during a ceremony that begins at 1:45 p.m. The silent auction - with lots of fantastic items - closes at 1:45 p.m. Car show awards are at 2:30 p.m. Thanks to our friends at Farm Equipment Service, Inc. in Temple, we will be giving away a Bad Boy MZ Magnum Zero-Turn Mower. Get your tickets today! See more details on page 8. Proceeds benefit the SPJST Foundation. This amazing mower will be displayed at the car show. More car show information, including an entry form, is on pages 6 and 7. Plan to be in Seaton on Saturday, October 5 to celebrate Czech heritage!

service available. Please join us! Submitted by, Patricia Hoelscher Lodge 47, Seaton Editor’s Note: The church’s congregation was in the midst of planning for the celebration of the 125th anniversary of completion of the church building when a fire broke out Monday morning, July 29, 2019 and destroyed the 124-year-old church. The church was known to be one of the largest wooden church structures in the state. —SPJST—
Cyclone-Marak KCs to host Oct. 27 blood drive Knight of Columbus Council 10186 of Cyclone-Marak will have a blood drive at Cyclone Church hall on the fourth Sunday of October, which is October 27, 2019. The drive will start at 8 a.m. and continue until 11:30 a.m. A free breakfast will be served if you donate or not. All items associated with the drive will be on hand. This writer owes the last 10 years to the blood drive as he had too high of an iron count at 600-plus. After tests, it was determined that there was a six-centimeter tumor on the left kidney. It was removed, and it was malignant. He was advised if it had not come out of his kidney, he would have been a dead man walking. So whatever you are doing on October 27, make your way to Cyclone, as it may extend your life. If you can donate, you will be helping to save lives. Bobby Hoelscher Lodge 24, Cyclone —SPJST—

From the Supreme Lodge Supreme Lodge presents Results of Ballot in lieu of a Special Convention Dear Members, During the July Supreme Lodge meeting, the Supreme Lodge considered By-Law amendments needed and voted unanimously to send a ballot to the delegates of the 32nd Convention. A ballot in lieu of a special convention is authorized in Article VI, Section 12 of our ByLaws. Six proposals for amendment were submitted to the delegates for their vote. If all delegates had voted for each proposal, the total of eligible votes was 33,385. To provide confidentiality, the votes were counted by Henry L.S. Jezek, CPA of the accounting firm of Henry L.S. Jezek in Temple, Texas. All of the proposals were approved by more than a two-thirds majority. The following is a description of the proposals and the votes cast for and against each proposal. Proposal No. 1 - To amend Article XV, Section 97. Resolved to add following paragraph to end of Section 97: “If the SPJST’s reserves for any class of the SPJST’s benefit certificates becomes impaired, the Supreme Lodge Board of Directors may require the certificate holders to pay the SPJST an equitable proportion of the deficiency as determined by the Supreme Lodge Board of Directors. The aggregate amount for the impaired reserves may not exceed the total amount required to comply with section 885.408 of the Texas Insurance Code.” Reason: This is newly approved language passed by the Texas Legislature that is required to be included in the ByLaws of every Fraternal Benefit Society doing business in Texas. We need to add this to By-Laws to be in compliance. Votes FOR.................................25,585 Votes AGAINST .........................1,798 Approved by .............................93.4% Proposal No. 2 - To amend Article VII, Section 24. Resolved to amend Section 24 as follows to allow odd votes to be divided proportionally among the lodge’s delegates:
“Votes. A lodge represented by its delegate or delegates is entitled to one vote for every adult member. Delegates from each lodge shall divide their lodge’s votes equally among themselves. In the event the votes do not divide equally among its delegates, the extra votes shall be assigned proportionally to all of the lodge’s delegates. (Example, a lodge with four delegates and 405 votes would result in each delegate having 101.25 votes.)” Reason: The current method of assigning odd votes to the “ . . . delegate receiving the highest number of votes . . . ” makes it impossible to develop any method of electronic voting and tabulation. Amending the by-law to allow proportional assignment of odd votes will allow development of time-saving vote tabulation and greatly reduce possibility of errors during the counting process. Votes FOR.................................26,081 Votes AGAINST .........................1,302 Approved by..............................95.2% Proposal No. 3 - To amend Article VII, Section 26 (c). Resolved to amend this article requiring that a member must attend the majority of meetings during the three years preceding the Convention to be elected a delegate. Amend the article as follows: Amend the first sentence in Section 26 (c) which currently reads: “Attended a majority of the regular meetings of the lodge during the three years preceding the Convention.” to read: “Attended a majority of the regular meetings of the lodge during one year preceding the Convention. Lodges meeting quarterly, majority would be two meetings.” Reason: Current by-law meeting attendance requirement of three years is too restrictive to new members or old members becoming active who may be well qualified otherwise. Some lodges are not able to elect a full slate of delegates because of not having enough members meeting the three-year attendance requirement. Votes FOR.................................22,767 Votes AGAINST .........................6,279 Approved by .............................78.4%
Proposal No. 4 - To amend Article XI, Section 60. Official Publication Vestnik. Resolved to amend the last sentence of Section 60 to read as follows: “The Vestnik will be published twice monthly and in color.” Reason: The amendment, if approved, allows for publication of the Vestnik twice monthly instead of weekly. The primary reason for the change is to increase efficiency. SPJST will expand its communication by integrating new media tools and strategies to increase brand relevance. After consulting with the Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication and the Publication Committee, the Supreme Lodge concluded that a twice monthly printed newspaper will be sufficient to continue to provide good communication with our members. Votes FOR.................................25,256 Votes AGAINST .........................1,990 Approved by .............................92.7% Proposal No. 5 - To amend Article VIII Sections 29, 31, and 41 and Article IX Sections 49 and 50. Resolved to amend Sections 29, 31, 41, 49, and 50 by changing the name of Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services in all places that it appears to “Controller.” Reason: The only effective change here is changing the name of the position in Sections 29, 31, 41, 49, and 50 from “Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services” [Financial Secretary] to “Controller.” The name “Controller” better describes the position in more professional terms. The current position name is too long and cumbersome. Votes FOR.................................23,215 Votes AGAINST .........................4,008 Approved by .............................85.3% Proposal No. 6 - IX, SUPREME LODGE OFFICERS, Section 43 (a.) to read as follows: Resolved to amend article “(a.) To be a member of SPJST for at least one year preceding the election or appointment.” Resolved to amend Article X, SUPREME LODGE DIRECTORS, Section 51 (b.) to read as follows: “(b.) Be an active member for at least one year prior to the time of election.”

Reason: The effective change is reducing a three-year membership requirement to one year. In the case of Supreme Lodge Officers, the positions have become highly specialized requiring technical skills and the three-year membership requirement narrows the field of applicants too much. In the case of Directors, it appears that future regulations will impose the need for qualifications in Directors in experience and skill areas specified by regulators. Czech Moravian folk ensemble performing in Texas in October By Brian Vanicek SPJST President Hoping to see you at the 14th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Day, Saturday, October 5 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton, seven miles east of Temple off State Highway 53. The event is free and open to the public and a great way to kick off Czech Heritage Month in Texas. Several SPJST lodges and communities will follow suit with festivals and special performances of their own during the month of October. Look to the Vestnik for dates and times. In addition and in conjunction with Czech Heritage Month, five Texas venues will be hosting Mužátske Sbory Charvačané a Valtičan, a 16-piece folk ensemble which comes from the Moravian region of the Czech Republic. Music has long been an important part of daily life for the people in the Czech lands, offering both a means of expres-
sion and a vent for their emotions. To this day, traditional celebrations, including weddings, the welcoming of spring and giving of thanks for a successful harvest are still celebrated in song and dance. Mužátske Sbory Charvačané a Valtičan will be presenting a program of traditional Czech folk music, song, and dance at five performances throughout Texas: Saturday, October 19 Muziky, Muziky Festival Evening Performance Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center 250 West Fair Grounds Road La Grange, Texas 78945 Sunday, October 20 Czech Heritage Day Celebration Afternoon Performance Sokol Athletic Center in Dallas 7448 Greenville Avenue Dallas, Texas 75231 Tuesday, October 22 West Knights of Columbus Club Evening Performance 2547 Jerry Mashek Drive West, Texas Thursday, October 24 SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall Co-hosted by Czech Heritage Museum Evening Performance 10842 State Highway 53 Temple, Texas 76501

Thanks to each of the hosting organizations for their collaboration in welcoming Mužátske Sbory Charvačané a Valtičan to Texas. Your attendance at a performance near you will be appreciated! Watch the Vestnik for exact performance times as the date approaches. Thanking You in Advance . . . As you can imagine, securing funding to finance international travel for a performing group as large as Mužátske Sbory Charvačané a Valtičan represents a major challenge! To help facilitate travel expenses, a limited number of sponsorships are being offered to organizations, businesses, and individuals. In exchange, the group will have a sign that travels with them from performance to performance, acknowledging the generosity of their sponsors. Groups or individuals interested in sponsoring may contact me directly at vanicek@spjst.com or by telephone at 254-534-2902. No offer of support is considered too large or too small! —SPJST—

The Power of Tax Deferral By Richard Hrbacek SPJST Operations/Marketing Manger With a tax deferred investment, the earnings on your money is reinvested and no money is taken out for taxes. You potentially have more money to compound and grow. That means when you withdraw the funds, your investment may be larger than a similar investment that is subject to tax each year.
The chart below illustrates the potential benefits of a tax-deferred investment versus a taxable investment assuming $100,000 deposit in Year 1 earning an annual return of 3 percent for 20 years and the investor paying 24 percent in federal income tax on taxable earnings.

This chart illustrates the potential benefits of a taxdeferred investment versus a taxable investment. This chart is for illustrative purposes only using a hypothetical rate and is not indicative of investment performance or future incomes. In addition, it does not reflect
any federal income tax that may be due when an investor receives distributions from a tax-deferred investment. This information should not be construed as legal or tax advice. Consult a tax advisor regarding your specific situation.
Annuities provide tax-deferred growth An annuity is a tax-deferred insurance product which can be used to accumulate funds for retirement and other long-term objectives. Annuities provide interest earnings on the deposits, but also earn interest on the interest, which is known as compounding. In addition, interest is earned on money that would have gone to pay taxes had the principal been placed in a taxable investment. This enables all earned annuity income to compound without being reduced by current income taxes. Taxes on tax-deferred annuity contributions and earnings are deferred until the plan owner makes a withdrawal.
Tax-deferred products such as annuities are designed to help you save for longterm goals; as a result there are restrictions when funds can be withdrawn without penalty. Early withdrawals may be subject to sales charges and fees. Withdrawals prior to age 59 1/2 may be subject to a 10 percent income tax penalty. Annuities should be considered a long term commitment. Call your SPJST Sales Agent today to discuss annuity options they may be right for you. —SPJST—

Claire Cantey was voted in as a new member of our lodge. FAC/Youth Leader Holly Narro gave her reports. District One Fall Fun Day is Sunday, October 20 at Lodge 186, Caldwell, and she encouraged members to participate in the trunk-or-treat. She reminded everyone of Kolache Festival on Saturday, September 14 and Muziky Muziky in La Grange on October 18 and 19. The youth club participated in the back to school blast and handed out more than 300 packs of markers to those who attended. Youth held their annual awards/grandparents’ banquet after their meeting, and lodge officers were invited to attend. She reported that both beseda circles would be performing at the Kolache Festival at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, and youth would be participating in the Burleson County Fair Parade on Saturday, September 21. October is Czech Heritage Month, and she asked who wanted to help to bring homemade cookies to the next meeting.
Cookie trays will be assembled and taken to the schools in the area in observance of Czech Heritage Month. Susan Skrabanek gave the hall report. Workers are needed for Kolache Festival, and she had a sign-up sheet. She also stated that the concession account was using proceeds from the teen dance to pay for the youth banquet expenses. There was no old business. Under new business, it was brought up to make changes to our annual memorial service since the first Sunday in December falls on Thanksgiving weekend. Instead of a traditional turkey/dressing meal, we will serve a catered meal of chicken fried steak with all the trimmings. Susan will contact local caterers for bids on the meal. It was also discussed that the hall is in need of exterminating for insects and spiders. Kyle Skrabanek will contact a local exterminator and get this taken care of. Next Meeting—October 6 There was no further business and the meeting was adjourned until our next meeting on Sunday, October 6 at 2 p.m. Fraternally submitted, Susan Skrabanek, Reporter —SPJST—
Lodge 18, Elgin hosts large crowd at August dance Well, the summer is almost over, and it is still hot! I have this problem. I put things in a safe place so that I don’t lose them, then I can’t find them. That happened with my July pictures . . . that’s why they are late. Anyway, Mark Halata had a great dance in August. The band is a great group that provides wonderful music. It was the largest crowd we have had in a long time. The curtains are being made. We are still waiting on bids from painters, to get the hall painted. The trustees are hoping to have the hall in great shape for the holidays. That will be here before you know it. We have had some noise issues, bands playing too loud at the rentals. Hey, guys, that is not an SPJST rule that is a city ordinance. When we ask the band to comply, please support SPJST and ask the band to keep the volume down. The band can be fined, so can the hall which would force us to raise the rental rates. We want to keep the neighbors who live close to the hall happy. We hope all students have a great school year. Come join SPJST; we have so much to offer. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Mike Mogonye. Lodge 18, Elgin hosts Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six Sunday, July 21, 2019 • Lodge 18, Elgin Hall • Submitted by Irene Vrabel, Reporter On Sunday, July 21, 2019, Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six had a great dance. I don’t know for sure, but the crowd may have been smaller than usual. But those there had a great time. We had many celebrating birthdays, including the Hodde group’s Betty, Diane, and Megan. Edward Merka cele-
brated, and my husband Johnny Vrabel celebrated his 84th. It was great to see Susan and Henry Machicek at the dance. Henry has been going through a bout with cancer. We were so happy to see him doing better and getting his strength back. He got on stage with Fritz and the band to play his
accordion. Another couple that has had a battle is A.J. and Patsy Kubicek. A.J. had a stroke two years ago. It was great to see them on the dance floor. I know it’s a little step, but hopefully, you will be doing the polka again. Diane and Jolene got in the act and
joined the band. I must admit, I was on stage as well. What fun! Alice Morgan’s grandson got in on the act as well. He had a great time. We hope to see him again. Fraternally, Irene Vrabel, Reporter —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club Fort Worth Friendship Club met on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, at St. Thomas Church Parish Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell. Guests were Barbara Collins, guest of Christine Strieff, and Gary Schaffer, husband of Mary Schaffer. Everyone was welcomed. It was voted to dispense with the reading of the last minutes. Treasurer Margaret Sears presented the financial report which was approved as presented. The president reviewed each guideline, and each item was discussed. There were a few additions of clarifications made. In the review of the guidelines, it was suggested that in the event some chicken and rolls are left over, the hostesses for the day should have first choice to take this home. The guideline still exists that one must have permission from the donor to take other food home. New guidelines will be distributed for all to read and study. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to September celebrants - Mary Ann Krivanek, Sherrill Gustavson, Mary Schaffer, and Libbie Vrla. May you all have many more. Sunshine person Darlene Tompkins reported sending sympathy cards to Camille Bolcer on the death of her son and to Margaret Hoenig on the death of her brother-in-law. Get well cards were sent to Jim Wilcox, husband of Joann Wilcox, Lorraine Cross, and to Adele Strand who spent a few days in the hospital. We had five door prizes, and happy winners were Libbie Vrla, Christine Strieff, Mary Agnes Ward, Stanley Krenek, and Debbie Skrasek. Special thanks to the donors. Winners of the 50/50 dollar game were Joyce Helgeson and Lupe Garcia. Congratulations to all winners! Special thanks go to Sherrill Gustavson for assuming her duties as secretary for the first time. She looked very comfortable, and I know she will do a good job. It is with a sad heart that I report on the death on September 13 of Frances Matthews, our longtime homebound member. Frances’ mother, Frances Tirk, was one of our original members and her sister, Lydia Alholm, continues as our member. Our sympathy goes out to her great-nephews and nieces - Matt, Dan and Tim Alholm, and Tony Mi-

chelle, Terry, and Joey Tirk. I shall miss Frances as I used to visit her at the Wellington Retirement Home where she lived and always had a fun time. Of course, she was always watching football or baseball and always read the Fort Worth Star Telegram front to back. We have had several of our members on the sick list. Helen Skrasek spent a few days in the hospital, but she is home now and doing well. Her sister, Adele Strand, our homebound member, has been and still is in the hospital. Lydia Alholm was in the hospital overnight. She fell at home, and her caregiver took her to the hospital to get her checked out, but nothing was broken so she is back home now. I hear she is a little upset about the trip to the hospital as she was planning on going to WinStar that day. I talked with Tracy Horn the other day. She continues to live in the Parkwood Assisted Living Center in Bedford. She said she is doing well and is fine, and she sends greetings to all. Hostesses for September - Margaret Hoenig, Agnes Saldana, and Mary Agnes Ward with Sherrill Gustavson picking up the chicken - were thanked for their great job. Our theme was sports, and we did have some Cowboys and Rangers shirts, and one Texas Longhorn shirt - me! Hostesses for October will be Debbie Skrasek, Marilyn Llewellyn, and Libbie Vrla with Mary Schaffer picking up the
chicken. Our theme will be Halloween, so all wear your Halloween costume or something in black or orange. Following the meeting, grace was said, and a great fried chicken lunch with lots of great side dishes was enjoyed. A good time was had by all. Other News I had occasion the other day to talk with Kitty Rippin, our former member. My friend Vivian Vrana of Ennis died, and I went to the funeral. Since I had known that Kitty and Vivian were long ago dancing friends, I called to tell her. It pleased Kitty that I would remember this. She said Vivian and her late husband, and Kitty and her late husband, used to go dancing all over the state. She talked about the fun they had in going to all these Czech halls and also in eating out. I also attended the after-funeral lunch at KJT Hall. A nice couple by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Melton Vrla sat with us, and we had a nice visit. I learned they were from the other Vrla side of the family. My cousin, Arnold Vrla, married a Helen Vrla of Dallas. This Melton was from this Helen Vrla’s side. Anyway, they were a lovely couple, and my sister Georgie Morales and I enjoyed visiting with them. They told us that they enjoy reading our Vestnik articles. I told them I am always glad that someone reads them. So, hello, Melton Vrlas!

In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy
Resolution of Sympathy
The officers and members of SPJST Lodge 8, Weimar would like to express their heartfelt sympathies to the Alfred Marshall family on the loss of their loved one, ALFRED “AL” MARSHALL. Funeral service for Alfred Stanley Marshall, age 85, of Weimar, was held on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at Trinity Church in New Bielau, Texas, with Reverend Siemsglusz as officiant. Al grew up in Brenham and Houston. He graduated from Reagan High School and the University of Houston. As a petroleum engineer, he had a long career in the oil and gas industry. Al and family moved to the Weimar area in 1969. He loved serving his church as a member of the choir and the church council. We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, New Tabor, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, HENRIETTA HYVL, age 94, of New Tabor, who went home to her Lord, peacefully on Wednesday, August 28, 2019. Henrietta Marie Srubar was born in Caldwell, Texas, on June 2, 1925, to parents John and Mary (Rychlik) Srubar. She attended New Tabor School through the ninth grade and in later years, she received her GED from Caldwell High School. Hen- Henrietta Hyvl rietta fell in love with Willie V. Hyvl and was married on October 27, 1942, at the home of the bride’s parents. They were blessed with three loving children. Henrietta was an active mother in her children’s lives. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor; Christian Sisters of New Tabor Brethren Church; and RVOS. She enjoyed gardening and loved her flowers, watching the cattle as they grazed, playing dominoes, and dancing. However, she was dedicated to her family and made sure her family was well fed. She could prepare a three-course meal “at the drop of a hat.” In her later years, she worked as a secretary for Justice of the Peace in Caldwell, in the county clerk’s office, at the Caldwell Auction Barn, and at Strickland Funeral Home. She was preceded in death by husband Willie V. Hyvl; parents John and Mary (Rychlik) Srubar; and sisters Agnes Urbanovsky and Lillie Sebesta. Survivors include son Dan Hyvl and wife LaVonne of Channelview; daughters and sons-in-law Bettye Langham and husband Bill of Austin and Doris Blackmon and husband Gail of Caldwell; grandchildren Charles Smith and wife Lorena, Dan Smith, Jennifer Smith-Martinez and husband John, Candice Hill and husband Jimmy, Clayton Langham and wife Alischia, Danny Hyvl, and Dana Cast and husband Kevin; step-grand-

Good Grief News What are the Educational Requirements? What does CFSP mean in Texas and is Job Shadowing allowed? By Sabrina N. Young, CFSP Lodge 47, Seaton Sabrina, what do the CFSP initials after your name mean? First and foremost, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read the “Good Grief News,” and second, for noticing the CFSP initials. Individuals who successfully complete certification in the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice may use the designation CFSP (Certified Funeral Service Practitioner). Funeral directors that possess this designation are required to renew membership by submitting 2.0 CEUs (continuing education units), or 20 hours each year, to remain active and continue to use the CFSP designation. Certification is for individuals only and may not be used to imply that a firm/funeral home is certified. In the funeral industry, funeral directors need to take the initiative to enhance their overall education. Texas law only requires an associate’s degree or a certificate with continuing education every other year. The CFSP certification shows that the funeral director went above and beyond the Texas state requirements to earn the educational designation. Sabrina, why would this matter, and what educational background do you have? This matters because just as the trends of the funeral industry are changing, this designation enhances your director to practice the change. In addition to the CFSP designation, I have my bachelor’s degree in mortuary science from University of Central Oklahoma. I am also certified through Insight Books Institute as a certified celebrant. This allows me to offer the latest funeral services to match your needs. Without the educational background and staying up-to-date with trends, various funeral homes are behind the “ funeral trend” curve. I encourage you to meet with your funeral director and find out if they are capable to deliver for your funeral expectations. Not all directors are the same or will provide the trending services. Sabrina, I think I would like to shadow you. Is that allowed? I am thrilled that you have taken interest in the funeral profession. I am always interested in finding the right candidates to groom and make the next generational funeral director, pre-arrangement counselor, or bereavement coordinator. If you are interested, please reach out to me at 254-251-0099, and we can further your interests and make a difference for the industry and our community. —SPJST —

Lodge 107, Floresville youth enjoys band I have really been enjoying band this year. I play percussion every night we go to the football game and play for your amusement. At one of the games we played at, we were in a drum battle with the other band. We won the drum battle! I even met some new friends when we were doing the battle. The only reason that I joined band was so I can make new friends and play music because I love to play music. It’s my favorite thing to do. I even got to learn some new songs from my brother Nick. He is always there for me when I need him. I am always there for him when he needs me. He has always been supportive of me throughout everything. Caitlyn Petett, age 14 —SPJST—

The stories and memories we collect should be an inspiration and a lesson in life, especially for future generations. These narratives are regularly published on our website www.czechoslovaktalks.com, available in Czech and English. We have also decided to create comic books with selected stories to attract younger readers. The first book was published in the spring of 2019, and we are working on the next ones. We believe the rich heritage of Czechoslovaks abroad needs to be preserved, and we ask you to join us. Do you know anyone of Czech or Slovak origin in your family or neighborhood? We are happy for all contributions, we are open to cooperation, we are looking forward to hearing new stories. The project was created in 2016 by the Dotek Endowment Fund, supporting the development of relations between Czechs and Slovaks living abroad and their institutions for many years. We have had the chance to meet many people around the world, who have shared their amazing and inspiring life stories, and which we want to ensure will not be forgotten. Tons of Angels I

For instance, to look angelic is vypadat jako anděl; and mít andělskou trpělivost is to have the patience of a saint. If someone is being an absolute dear you can say ty jsi učiněný anděl. Slyšel jsem andělíčky zpívat is to see stars after getting a bump on the head - literally translated, it means to hear the cherubs sing. A guardian angel, who with any luck stops you from having to hear cherubs singing, is called an anděl strážný. An angel that has fallen from grace is a padlý anděl, and an angel of peace is an anděl míru. The angel that appears out of the blue signifying death is an anděl smrti - angel of death. An andělíček or an andílek are also common pet names. To say that he is mother’s little angel you can say on je maminčin andílek. If you want to call someone sweetheart or honey you say andílku. Texas Czech Heritage Month is October 1 through 31. All Czech Texans are encouraged to participate in this monthlong celebration. As we celebrate, we remember the past and our ancestors who were proud enough to stand up for what they believed in and loved. The purpose of this month is to preserve and promote the many contributions made by Czech immigrants and Czech Texans, and to honor our ancestors. The Legislature of Texas passed a resolution, signed by then-Texas Governor George W. Bush, designating the month of October to be celebrated annually as “Texas Czech Heritage Month.” The idea for the resolution was introduced by Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka of La Grange. The Travis-Williamson Czech Heritage Society, during the presidency of Dr. Dorothy Bohac, was instrumental in having the resolution passed. The month of October was chosen because of its historical significance— Czechoslovakian Independence was proclaimed on October 28, 1918. This special month of October of each year will give us an opportunity to remember and commemorate our rich Czech heritage. Here are a few ideas: *

It’s Not for You. It’s for Them. If protecting your loved ones financially is a priority, then getting life insurance is an easy step in helping you accomplish that. It means they would be OK financially if anything were to happen to you. And it’s more affordable than you think. In fact, most people overestimate the true cost of life insurance by three times or more.* While life insurance can’t replace a loved one, it can make the path easier for those left behind.
