Estelle Hurtik, nee Sulak, known to hundreds as simply “Grandma,” may be one of the few to ever walk this earth for whom living a century seemed inevitable. It’s high school football season in Texas! Pictured above are Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club members Tanner, Hunter, and Cotton Wood. Tanner is a freshman at Miles High School, Hunter is in eighth grade, and Cotton is a third grader. The boys, who are all playing football this year, enjoyed painting the hay bales to support the Miles Bulldogs.

VĚSTNÍK them. The Camp Kubena Strategic Plan covered six key areas with multiple reference points within each area. The outline of the plan is:
Supreme Lodge approves Camp Kubena strategic initiatives for 2020 and beyond By Brian Vanicek SPJST President Like a lot of boys and girls, I attended summer camp. These were week long sessions where we got up early, went fishing with cane poles, rode old bikes, played putter golf and — because it was church camp — devoted a good amount of time to Bible study. For most of us, this was our first time away from home and family . . . Knowing that, the counselors were good at guiding us through the experience and even helped us to write letters home — fully aware of the fact that we would beat that letter to our home mailbox. Camp was a wonderful experience on two levels: First — plain and simple — it was fun. And second, there were the skills that we learned just by being there — ones that I didn’t recognize at the time, but which have lasted a lifetime: emotional and social skills like how to work as part of a team, how to cope with separation, and how to become more selfreliant. Fast forward 50 years. Now here I am — part of the SPJST Supreme Lodge — helping to define and to deliver the SPJST Summer Camp program through Camp Kubena. That’s an exciting position to be in, and it was even more exciting last week as the SPJST Supreme Lodge met for their quarterly meeting and received an update from SPJST Camp Director Rob Clift. You’ll recall that Brother Clift joined the SPJST team in February 2019 to lead the next phase of Camp Kubena’s growth and development. Rob’s past success with groups like Sea Scout Base Galveston and the National Park Conservation Association demonstrated that he has the track record and capacity for managing and growing an exctiting camping experience at Camp Kubena. In addition to covering all of the routine matters — summer review, camp upgrades, and 2020 bookings secured — a significant part of our Tuesday afternoon session was devoted to reviewing and discussing Camp Kubena’s Strategic Plan. We’ve talked about strategic plans in this column before and how important it is to have clearly defined written objectives along with the accountabilities and deadlines for achieving

Astronomy SPJST recognizes the important role — perhaps “obligation” and “opportunity” would be better words — that it has to make a positive difference in the lives of its young people — and others — by committing itself through its fraternal programming to developing a greater appreciation, understanding, and involvement with the natural world. Following Brother Clift’s presentation, a motion was made by Chief Financial Officer Leonard Mikeska and seconded by District Six Director Karen Kaspar to support each of the six strategic initaitives. The motion carried unanimously. While running a camp can be considered a noble endeavor, it is also a business. It’s no accident that camps which are run well as businesses are usually effective in executiving their mission. Detailed accounting procedures are in place listing revenue and expense categories enabling SPJST to monitor receipts and disbursements and compare current and prior year receipts and disbursements in all of the accounts. As stated by the American Camp Association, “The same talents and skills required to run a business — focus, persistence, attention, and intelligence— are also required to run a quality camp program.” Camp Kubena: Something for Everyone That’s just a little peek behind the scenes at Camp Kubena. For a more detailed look at Camp Kubena — and from the comfort of your armchair — please

It’s a multi-use property available year-round to host any type of organizational, church, school, or family events, including reunions and organizational team-building events. Camp Director Clift is a very friendly and knowledgeable overseer, and he will be happy to visit with you and discuss options — including meals, hayrides and other amenitites — for your upcoming event. Please note the following SPJST Youth Program dates for 2020 at Camp Kubena: District Youth Counselors’ Spring Meeting January 24 to 26 Youth Leaders Workshop March 20 to 22 LIT/Teen Camp June 24 to 28 Junior Session One July 8 to 12 Junior Session Two July 15 to 19 Postscript: At the outset of this column, I stated that I had attended “church camp” and not “SPJST camp.” Why is that? For the simple reason, Reverend Milton Maly, who was our pastor at Seaton Brethren Church, thought enough about the program to pay a personal visit to see my mom and dad and explain the benefits of attending. That made all the differnence in the world. I certainly knew about SPJST camp as many of my friends attended. Looking back, I was simply too shy at the time to ask my parents why I couldn’t go to SPJST camp. I thought it was probably very expensive and would be something that they couldn’t afford . . . Seriously! In a very real way, Reverend Maly’s role in my attending camp is very much analagous to the important role that SPJST’s Supreme Lodge members, District Youth Counselors, youth leaders, sales agents, parents, and grandparents play in our SPJST camp program. Typically, it takes an adult who believes in the the merits of camp — and the SPJST Youth Program — to get a young person involved. My sincere thanks to everyone who is working — and spreading the word — to make this happen! —SPJST—

Guadalupe Mountains National Park Guadalupe Mountains National Park is located in the dry high terrain of far West Texas on U.S. Highway 62/180. Many people do not realize the beauty this National Park has to offer in the fall. It is located 100 miles east of El Paso and almost 200 miles due west of Midland. Well, here’s what Guadalupe has to offer: Texas’ tallest peak, most dramatic landmark, most beautiful canyon, and best fall colors, in addition to trails that lead to hidden thickets, forests, and woodlands. “The park’s fall colors are very brilliant yellows, reds and oranges,” said Elizabeth Jackson, chief of interpretation for the park. “It is largely from the big tooth maple that grows in the park, although we do have lovely evergreens, Texas madrones with lovely red berries, too. It’s quite unique and beautiful to look at.” Guadalupe Mountains National Park is located in far West Texas on U.S. Highway 62/180. The driving distance is 110 miles east of El Paso, Texas, or 65 miles north of Van Horn, Texas. 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive Everyone spread the word! 727-7578 or email Sandra at sandrad@spjst.com. You can also download the scholarship applications at www.spjst.org. Click on Scholarships under the Programs tab. Officer Elections The end of another year is rapidly approaching. Many lodges have had a very productive and successful year. This is the time of year when lodges across the state will be electing leaders for the coming year. Has your lodge moved forward? Has your lodge met all of its goals? Has your lodge completed all of its projects planned for the year in your community? Has your lodge set goals for 2020? Keeping this in mind may help you make choices on who you will elect to keep your lodge moving forward in the coming year. It is the duty of all members to provide the leaders of their lodge with suggestions, ideas, and assistance. When asked to assist with activities throughout the year, please help your lodge officers. Fraternalism works best when every member is involved in the process. While lodges are electing new officers, this would also be an excellent time to check the back page of the Vestnik for your meeting date and time. Several lodges are not listed. This would be a perfect time to get the information listed. If any of this information has changed, please contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at 254-773-1575, ext. 122 or melaniez@spjst.com and have her update your lodge information. Outgoing Officers With the election of new officers, do not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not elected to serve in 2020 and does not
5
seek re-election in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meeting. Veterans Day On November 11, please find a moment to remember to honor our veterans who have bravely answered the call to defend our right of freedom, aided and comforted our friends and allies, and have turned away countless aggressors. We, as a nation, can never repay our debt of gratitude to the many men and women who died or were wounded to protect the right of our freedom. Please pause on this day and at your local lodge meeting (even if it is after November 11) to recognize and thank the veterans and the many military men and women who have fought in the past and are still fighting today to protect our freedom. Happy Thanksgiving Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a public holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. It originated as a harvest festival. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, after Congress requested a proclamation by George Washington. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens,” to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader fall/winter holiday season in the United States. The event that Americans commonly call the “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621. This feast lasted three days, and — as accounted by attendee Edward
From the Fraternal Department — at this time of Thanksgiving celebration — our thoughts turn gratefully to you — our members with warm appreciation. We are all very thankful to be part of the wonderful SPJST statewide family that does so much for each other and our communities. As we celebrate the holiday, let us give thanks to our Creator and His Son and reflect on what is important, our family and friends. Cherish the time you have with each other and always let them know how much they mean to you. Temple Christmas Parade Please make plans to be in Temple on Monday, December 2. This is the date of the City of Temple’s Annual Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting. SPJST will participate in the parade so come out to see the SPJST Float and State Royalty. Progressive 42 Domino Tournament The first SPJST state tournament of 2020 will take place on Saturday, January 11. This will be the Progressive 42 Domino Tournament to be held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Please include in your New Year’s Resolution to become actively involved in all state and local lodge activities in 2020. Calendar of Events Please remember to mark your calendars for the 2020 SPJST State Tournaments. State tournaments will be held at the SPJST Home Office. Entry for the tournaments will be $20 for members and non-members. There will be Czech pastries in the morning, a catered meal

Estelle Hurtik Continued from Page 1. was the 100-year-old woman who drank whiskey every day. That certainly doesn’t sound like grandma. But I think the lesson is that there’s more than one way to skin a cat.
VĚSTNÍK From my perch, I think Grandma has done a few things to get this far that we can all learn from. She has always been quick to laugh. I don’t think I’ve ever had a conversation with her that didn’t involve her smiling and letting out her trademark, Czech-accented chuckle. A lot of it has to do with her evenkeeled, calm demeanor. She’s unflappable. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her yell or curse in my 31 years, even when my cousins and I were jumping off couches and crashing into shoddy pillow forts in the middle of her living room. Or when Kaylee and I stayed up too late as kids to watch Saturday Night Live in her living room. If she yelled at Kaylee and Jennifer for feeding me three pennies when I was a baby, well, I was too young to remember. She has always been resilient. Few of us that have descended from her have had to face anything close to the hardships that she tackled growing up. Before she was even in high school, she was tasked with looking after her family in a small farmhouse outside of Temple, Texas. Growing up in the middle of the Great Depression, working to keep mouths fed and backs clothed, learning how to speak English in a community full of Czech immigrants, becoming an adult just as the second World War was beginning, marrying her Purple Heartdecorated husband after the war and then raising five children in the wild rock and roll ‘60s and ‘70s . . . the woman has seen more than her fair share of challenges. Yet she never once complained or spoke with resentment about the past. She spoke with grace and gratitude. I think about that when I feel like screaming because the internet on the plane I’m on isn’t working. She has always been resourceful. You won’t find a more thrifty and clever woman who always chooses to reuse and repurpose rather than waste. Food scraps go into the yard to fertilize, old jeans get patched . . . heck, she made her own soap, the smell of which both my parents still can remember. Her mantra has always been only buy what you need. Excess didn’t exist in her household, and not just because she had five kids on one working class income. She lived simply before it was a trendy thing to say. The woman made her own wedding dress, spending $40 for the materials to make the gown and veil. She actually
ended up making money on her wedding as they charged guests 35 cents per ticket at Sefcik Hall for the wedding dance, bringing in $60 at the door. To me, one of 12 grandchildren who have the honor of calling her my Grandma, I realize how those qualities are priceless gifts that we all have the privilege of learning from. We are all better people for it. And to top it all off, she has given us an identity that we carry forward. I love being Czech. I love correcting all my friends and coworkers on how to properly pronounce kolach and on the difference between the klobasniky most of
Texas calls kolaches and the real thing. I love going to family reunions at Sefcik Hall and drinking cold pivo at that old bar beneath the creaking floorboards from the dancefloor above. I loved going to weekend dances at our old SPJST hall in Burleson and hearing Grandma talk about her days writing for the Vestnik newsletter. I love hearing Grandma talk about her visits to the homeland and having had the honor of visiting Prague and Brno myself. So to Grandma on this very special day, I say thank you for everything and Všechno nejlepší k narozeninám! —SPJST—

14th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration Saturday, October 5, 2019 • SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall
We extend sincere thanks and appreciation to all of the 2019 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration sponsors, participants, and volunteers. A total of 222 of the most amazing vehicles in the Central Texas area were displayed at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall on Saturday, October 5. It was a perfect day with lots of sun, and temperatures were in the upper 80s. The hall and event grounds were filled with hundreds and hundreds of spectators. The attendance throughout the day was estimated between 4,000 to 5,000 people. The Czech Heritage Celebration included several folklife demonstrations hosted by the Czech Heritage Museum. These included sauerkraut making, basket weaving, horseshoe making, and accordion music. David Frei entertained for everyone’s listening and dancing pleasure. Vendors, raffles, silent auction, and District Two Beseda Dancers were also part of the afternoon of fun.
Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club hosted the Kids’ Zone. Activities included a bounce house and other games. Camp Kubena staff hosted crafts and cornhole. Special guest Miss Texas 2019 Chandler Foreman was present throughout the day. She performed songs on the flute and entertained the crowd. A special thank you to our sponsors listed on page 23 for their generous contributions. Thanks to the businesses and individuals who donated items for the silent auction. Thanks to the buyers, too! And, a big thank you to the volunteers who helped make the day a success. Proceeds benefitted the SPJST Foundation which supports the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple and Camp Kubena in Ledbetter. And, thanks to Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall members for hosting the event. Visit spjstcarshow.org to view more photos. —SPJST—

President Irene asked if anyone would volunteer to print the new member directory book. As I have said before, we do have wonderful members. Lorene Marusak volunteered to print them for us. Thank you so much. It was announced we have two shutin members - Bessie Laznovsky and Geraldine Zhanel. We don’t want to forget them at Christmas. We will also start selling tickets for the Christmas giveaway quilt. That way, we can purchase tickets for two months. It is really pretty; you will want to purchase more than just one or two. We also want to thank Marita Novak Barah for donating grandmother Antonio Novak’s vintage quilting frame. Her grandmother was one of our early Circle members, and, Marita, we thank you so much. Come and visit with us sometime, Marita. We were asked to bring food for Ennis Helping Hands. We have done this every year, and I’m sure you all know what kind of items to bring. If not, call President Irene, and she can help you out. It was announced the Circle will purchase pizza for the November meeting, and several will bring dessert. I know we will have a great lunch. The 50-50 winner was Joan Markham, and thanks, Lillie Macalik, for finishing our Christmas quilt. You did a great job! It was good to see everyone. Come again in November and bring your food items. We always have a great time! Sincerely, Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club The Fort Worth Friendship Club meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell on Wednesday, October 2, 2019, in the Community Room of St. Thomas Church. Everyone was welcomed, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. President Barbara read the minutes from the previous meeting, and Treasurer Margaret Sears gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as presented. Margaret asked that everyone review their information of address, email address, and phone and cell numbers in the membership booklet as she will prepare an updated one for distribution in January. Claire Keighley was welcomed back after a long absence. It was nice to see her again. Barbara reported that Jo Ann Wilcox resigned as a member of the telephone committee after November as she and her husband will be moving to Allen to live with their son. Debbie Skrasek volunteered to serve on this committee. Thanks, Debbie. Sunshine Person Darlene Tompkins reported get well/thinking of you cards were sent to Adele Strand, Lorraine Cross, Rose Ann Spann, Lydia Alholm, and Lola Taylor. A birthday card was sent to homebound member Ann Conner, and a sympathy card was sent to Lydia Alholm on the death of her sister Frances. Libbie will check with Lydia as to what charitable institution to send our memorial for Frances. The nominating committee will present their slate of officers to vote on for the coming year at the November meet-
ing. November is also a designated month in which we support St. Vincent de Paul Assistance Program. (No food items, only cash is accepted.) Hostesses for November will be Lupe Garcia and Mary Schaffer. As last year, Jon Durham of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth will prepare turkey, dressing, and gravy for the Thanksgiving luncheon. Members are asked to bring a dish to complement the turkey, dressing, and gravy. It is with a sad heart that I report on the death of Adele Strand on October 9. Adele and husband Harold joined our club when they moved to Fort Worth from Waco. Her funeral mass was at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Waco. My sister Lil Kosarek and I attended the service which was very nice. Adele was one of the original members of the parish, and the choir that sang consisted of two ladies and one man. To all our surprise, the last song they sang was in Czech which was “Ta Nase Pisnicka Ceska.” All the Czechs in the congregation joined in on the singing which made for a beautiful tribute to Adele. Our sympathy goes to husband Harold and sister Helen Skrasek. Anna Marie Moncrief, Margaret Sears, Sharron Connelly, Helen Rogers, Kathy Thome, and I enjoyed attending the fall luncheon of the Auxiliary to the Discalced Carmelite Nuns. It was held at The White Room in Arlington. It is always nice to see everyone. When I talked with Kitty Rippen, our former member, about our mutual friend that passed away in Ennis, she told me about going to visit the Museum on World War II in New Orleans. I learned that Kitty was a Wave in the Navy and asked her if I could write about this as I have heard it is a big honor to be invited

to go on this trip. The trip was September 24 to 27, and Kitty was one of three women with all the rest being men for a total of 40. She was picked up at home, taken to the airport where they flew to Austin, and the next day, she flew on to New Orleans. There were three buses, and wheelchairs were provided for all. Kitty, age 95, said she still can walk but decided to let someone push her instead. The group was treated royally - flags and balloons on the plane, police escort everywhere, and that she has never before shook as many hands. She said she enjoyed meeting Gary Senese. The Museum covered Pearl Harbor through the end of World War II. The movie shown was most realistic, bombs going off and soldiers wading through mud and water. All received various gifts of two tee-shirts, cap, and a lot of other items. Kitty thoroughly enjoy the trip. Congratulations on being invited! Hostesses Debbie Skrasek, Marilyn Llewellyn, and Libbie Vrla were thanked along with Mary Schaffer for picking up the chicken. Following the meeting, grace was said, and a wonderful lunch of fried chicken and all the other side dishes was enjoyed. The next meeting will be Wednesday, November 6. See you then! So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

State Fraternal Director shares November news When November comes around, we think of cooler weather and Thanksgiving. I want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving! To those of you who will be traveling during the holiday, may your journeys be joyous and safe. Here is a little history of Thanksgiv-
ing from our Peanuts’ friend Linus: “In the year 1621, the Pilgrims held their first Thanksgiving feast. They invited the great Indian chief Massasoit, who brought 90 of his brave Indians and a great abundance of food. Governor William Bradford and Captain Miles Standish were honored guests. Elder William Brewster, who was a minister, said a prayer that went something like this: ‘We thank God for our homes and our food and our safety in a new land. We

A motion was passed to change the SPJST Youth Year from January 1 to December 31 (instead of June 1 to May 31). This change goes into effect starting January 1, 2020. I know your head is now spinning; however, it will not affect any youth in any negative way. This will be a time of transition for the year, and we will make accommodations for all youth on camp ages and YAD ages. I will be sending you each a letter in detail on how it is all going to work. I have also stated that when an issue arises, and it will — we
District One Queen Jessica Enrique crowned Burleson County Fair Queen Dear SPJST Readers, Along with being an SPJST member since the age of five, I have been an active 4-H member showing rabbits in our county fair. My senior year, I decided to run for fair queen. “Wish Upon A Star” was our county fair’s theme. A dream come true . . . I was crowned Burleson County Fair Queen on Wednesday, September 25, 2019. I’m blessed to be a part of this giving community and appreciate all the wonderful people for their support in purchasing fair membership tickets and a big thank you to my sponsor: SPJST Lodge 186, Caldwell. I appreciate Mr. and
Mrs. Donnie Victorick for their continued support for me and the youth of our county. A very special thank you to my parents, Andrea and Jessie, my number 1 fan Jessie (my brother), all my aunts, uncles, and grandparents for their love and endless support! will tackle the issue and work it out for the youth. I know many don’t like change, but right now, there are only two full time positions in the Fraternal Department that work with the youth and adults, and that is Tammy and me. This will be a big benefit for Tammy. This will give her time to add up all merit points for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) and not rush to get it done in June while we are trying to get ready for camps and YADs. You will know way in advance who is eligible to participate in camp and YAD. Please know I am working on this informative letter, and it will be emailed and mailed to youth leaders and printed in the Vestnik. December 15— Quarterly Reports Due Please make every attempt to submit your quarterly reports by December 15. This is the report for September, Oc-
VĚSTNÍK tober, and November. This report is used to help determine youth club funding and incentives. Not turning in a report could mean losing hundreds of dollars for your youth club. Update: With the changes to the SPJST Youth Year, youth leaders will complete only the month of December on the next quarterly report and also turn that in on December 15. I will have your new sheets in the December packet for the new youth year that begins on January 1, 2020. December Vestnik Project The December Vestnik Project is about National Handwashing Awareness Month. Talk to your youth about how important it is to have clean hands. Membership Drives Membership drives can help create a momentum of growth in your group, but don’t just stop there. Continue to host fun events for youth to enjoy throughout the year. Check out www.thesource4ym.com for some really great youth event ideas. Some of the ideas on this page would also be useful when planning your youth club meetings and holiday parties.
The President’s Volunteer Service Award Volunteer hours should be logged into the system no later than March 31, 2020. SPJST will recognize youth for volunteer service during January 1 through December 31, 2019. For more information, please see page 40 of the Youth Club Handbook which is located online at spjst.org.

Why we should observe this day! During the beginning of November, National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week recognizes shelters that provide care and bridge the gap to adoption for many abandoned and stray animals. The day is also dedicated to the hard-working people who support the efforts of the shelters and keep pets healthy.
Help Tiger find his new home.
HOW TO OBSERVE Get to know your local animal shelter and learn the types of support it needs to continue to provide services to the animals and community it serves. Let them know you appreciate them by leaving a donation. Consider volunteering or even adopting if you have been looking for a forever companion. Find a local humane society. Never been inside an animal shelter? Take an hour or two out of your day to stop by your local shelter during public hours and see firsthand how things work. If you’d like to become more involved, find out how you can become a volunteer.

I made an ornament for the contest and won first place. We also had fun with all the things to do. Later, we went to the Monster Jam for my sixth birthday. It was loud, and
we ate popcorn. I saw the monster trucks race each other. Then, I saw some ride on two wheels and do a flip. It was exciting, and some trucks also crashed and broke down. Your friend, Evan Pflughaupt, age 6 —SPJST—

Good Grief News Grief Talk and the First Date: What you might not have expected! By Sabrina N. Young, CFSP Lodge 47, Seaton “Sabrina, I was so embarrassed when I received an invitation to go dancing, and my husband has only been ‘gone’ seven months. Should I go?” My encouragement is do what you feel you are ready to do! If you can take the chance to go out and have a little fun time then go for it. Please do not hesitate because you are worried about what others will think. With grief, there is no proper timeline. There is no required length of time that is socially accepted for a spouse to grieve. It is solely based on you. It may feel overwhelming when someone asks you to engage in social activities. You might have always had that special someone on your arm, and now you have to learn to confidently walk on your own. Another thing is your grief is still very new to you, and you haven’t gotten over the language of grief. Grief Toastmasters is not the thing of the past. Grief Toastmasters is not something to be overlooked. When you sit down with someone new, you want to share your experience and how you have kept your time before this exciting engagement with someone new. This woman shared with me that even though she had an amazing night dancing, when it was time for dinner, the gentleman asked about her past year. She began to cry unexpectedly. She never shared her story with a stranger who was looking at her the way her husband used to. With Grief Toastmasters, it teaches you how to have this conversation, without the tears. It prepares you for the questions you didn’t know people were going to ask you. Toastmasters helps with the language transition that is needed to move forward with your admirer. If you are needing this assistance, I encourage you to join our grief toastmasters’ group. If you are interested, please call Sabrina N. Young, CFSP at 254-251-0099. —SPJST —
