Readers Write Member appreciates receiving Sid Pokladnik Scholarship I appreciate receiving the 2019 SPJST Sid Pokladnik Scholarship. I learned that Mr. Pokladnik was a great musician and orchestra leader in Dallas. I feel so honored and humbled to receive a scholarship in his honor. I know he brought much joy to the Czech people of the Dallas area and Lodge 84, Dallas for many years. I am currently a freshman at Texas A&M University majoring in business finance with a minor in marketing. I have been accepted into Mays Business School. I attended Needville High School where I played volleyball, and we won the state championship in 2017 in Dallas. The following year in 2018, we earned second place . . . almost back- toback state champions! I have been involved with SPJST for many years and served as the 2016-2017 SPJST District Five Queen. I also attended SPJST camp for several years. Thanks, Baley Stavinoha Lodge 81, Needville —SPJST—
District Four Youth Counselor resigns It is time for me to step down as District Four Youth Counselor (DYC). I resigned as of October 18, 2019. Please do not think it has anything to do with my SPJST family. There are several reasons for my action. The most important reason I stepped down before the spring meeting is so that Assistant Laura Pospichal has time to transition into the DYC position before the new youth year begins in January 2020. There are several personal reasons for my resignation. I needed to resign last year, but I could not bring myself to leave my SPJST family. Now is the time

Fort Hood Memorial Pavilion hosts 10th Anniversary Remembrance By Brian Vanicek SPJST President For six years, SPJST was involved in raising awareness and funding for the Fort Hood Memorial Pavilion, a project conceived by then SPJST Fraternal Field Manager Hiram Dixon as a way to pay tribute to the 12 American soldiers and civilian contractor who were killed and the 31 who were wounded at Fort Hood on November 5, 2009. The unborn child of one of the soldiers also died. The memorial was dedicated on March 11, 2016, with considerable fanfare throughout the region and state. The memorial honors the victims and provides a historic record of this tragedy, delivering a message of vigilance for generations to come. On Tuesday, November 5, the men and women who lost their lives were remembered during the “10th Anniversary Remembrance” held at the Fort Hood Memorial Pavilion. U.S. Representatives Roger Williams and John Carter, who were in attendance, released these statements Tuesday morning: “The act of sheer evil on United States soil 10 years ago today was unthinkable, as 14 innocent lives were taken, including an unborn child. Over the last decade, we have seen extraordinary resilience and an outpouring of support from our community coming together to heal – and because of
VĚSTNÍK it, we have showed the world the very best of America. I am forever grateful for the heroic actions of those who brought an end to the violence, and my prayers are with the families of those taken far too soon. Our men and women in uniform put their lives on the line every day to protect our freedom, and we will never forget the stories of our fallen brothers and sisters. May God bless our troops, and may He continue to bless the United States of America.” — Rep. Roger Williams (R) District 25 “Ten years ago today, pure evil struck The Great Place when a terrorist killed 13 men and women and wounded more than 30 others. No matter how many days pass, the horrors of that day remain on my mind, and our community still carries the weight of grief for those we lost. On the anniversary of this tragedy, Erika and I are praying for the families that were forever changed. I also want to convey that I’m immensely proud of the Soldiers at Fort Hood, the greatest fighting forces the world has ever seen. Their strength and commitment to their fellow brothers and sisters in arms is how they’ve healed since that day. We will never forget their service to our country, or the sacrifices they made when facing evil. God bless Fort Hood.” — Rep. John Carter (R) District 31 As SPJST President, it was my privilege and honor to guide attendees through the program; moreover, it was a proud and gratifying experience for SPJST to have championed this important and patriotic initiative — a lasting tribute to those who gave their all for their country — not on the distant soils of Iraq or Afghanistan — but here — on American soil in Fort Hood, Texas. The photos which appear elsewhere in this week’s Vestnik capture the scope and solemn tone of the event. Looking Back . . . In preparing for last Tuesday’s program, I couldn’t but help to reminisce: Hiram’s Visiting after the 10th Anniversary remembrance, left to right, are Keely Cahill Vanacker, whose father CW2 (Ret.) Michael G. Cahill was a victim of the November 5, 2009, shooting; SPJST Vice President Hiram Dixon, sculptor Troy Kelley, and SPJST President Brian Vanicek.
original idea for the memorial was for a simple gazebo and garden encircled by 13 trees to honor the victims. I still have the layout which we presented to the community at a press conference held at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center on February 10, 2010. It was following that press conference that Salado artist and sculptor Troy Kelley stepped forward to enhance our plan for a simple gazebo and garden with his incredibly personal and moving concept for the memorial. Throughout the spring and summer months of 2010, considerable efforts were made by a committee designated by then Mayor Tim Hancock to determine the exact name, location, design, and budget for the project. Working alongside Mr. Kelley, Killeen area homebuilder Don Farek, a member of SPJST Lodge 35, Elk, provided project oversight taking the project from artist’s conception and working with engineers to develop completed structural plans. An unveiling ceremony of the project design was held on November 5, 2010, for the community and for the families of those who lost loved ones. For the next five years, the Fort Hood Memorial Committee toiled to get the project built. That was such a monumental task with many victories and some disappointments along the way. In the end, so many SPJST lodges and members contributed to this initiative, along with the support that SPJST received from private citizens, veterans groups, civic organizations, and our sister fraternal organizations. Even so, a monumental project such as this carries with it monumental costs, and this is where the Fort Hood Memorial Committee under the devoted leadership of Mayor Hancock and with the support of past Mayor Fred Latham really came through — rallying the support of the community, contributors, and contractors in order to get the project completed. Groundbreaking for the memorial took place July 24, 2015. Esteemed guests at the event included survivors of the shooting, families of those who were taken from us, and first responders. The dedication of the memorial and the presentation of Texas Purple Hearts by
Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Major General John Nichols took place on March 11, 2016. Tuesday’s “10th Anniversary Remembrance” was a time to pay tribute to our fallen brothers and sisters for their sacrifice to our nation and for the personal attributes that made each of them so very dear and special to their families and those who knew them. That the ceremony took place at the Fort Hood Memorial Pavilion also serves as an opportunity to remind ourselves of the important fraternal role that SPJST has played in the lives of its members and in the communities that we serve. It’s not about living in the past, but respecting the noble deeds our Society has accomplished in the past that help to define the mission of our fraternal order and the positive difference that it has made in the lives of others. I’ll summarize with a quote from Dee Ann Turner, former Chick-fil-A Vice President, who helped to shape that company’s culture for 30 years, “Sure, every business, hopefully, wants to make money, but that is usually not the purpose of the organization. The purpose is about something bigger than any one individual, and it’s about the difference that a business can make through its product, service, and influence.” —SPJST—

Commentary I requested action on an agenda item asking the Supreme Lodge to revisit scholarship payment for recipients who enlist in the military. My reason was that military pay is minimal, and servicemen/women need money for uniforms and other necessities which they lack funds for. Conclusion of the discussion was that such payment would not be consistent with the SPJST Scholarship guidelines which says funds are paid to an educational institution and never to an individual. the Southwest, written by Henry Maresh in 1934 during The Great Depression. In the middle of the worst economic times in American history, the author devotes an entire chapter (XLI) to SPJST and states what a great, vibrant organization it was in the early 20th century. Out of all the many Czech organizations that were active at that time, he dedicated a chapter to the free thinkers of SPJST. Maresh also wrote a chapter on past SPJST President C.H. Chernosky who was elected in 1924 at the Ninth Convention in Houston. Chernosky was a graduate of the University of Texas in 1912. He served Fort Bend County Judge from 1916 to 1920 during World War I. He spoke three languages. He was appointed to the State Board of Education in 1929. Chernosky was a true rock star of his time! In 1933, SPJST had 152 lodges, 11,141 adults, and 621 youth members. The author credits SPJST for keeping the Czech people in financial well being during those hard times. Early leadership from past presidents like Judge Chernosky helped SPJST make it through the challenging economic times during The Great Depression. This fraternal insurance business model that has been handed down through generations will see us through 2020 and beyond. We, as members of the Supreme Lodge, have a great legacy to uphold and to preserve for future generations. “History repeats itself” and “History never repeats itself” are about equally true . . . We never know enough about the infinitely complex circumstances of any past event to prophesy the future by analogy. ~ G.M. Trevelyan Fraternally, Bradley Stavinoha District Five Director

Lodge 18, Elgin trustees work on hall improvements The trustees at Lodge 18, Elgin are working to improve the hall. The new curtains are up, and we will soon have the painter in to repaint. It takes a lot work to keep the hall in good shape. Thank you, trustees, for all your work. We sure could use some help. I remember when we had 25 or more members attending a meeting; now, we are lucky to have eight. I don’t know how long that can continue. We have rentals, but only two per month. We limit the number as three people have their hands full with the rentals and two dances each month. Thank you to President David Meyer, Secretary-Treasurer Charles Wilson, and Trustee F.L. Meyer for all the hard work you do at the hall. We have a great dance coming up on Sunday, November 17. We will host the Czechaholics with their great dancing
music. Dancing is such great exercise and fun; you don’t know you are getting a workout. We had Fritz Hodde for the October dance. There were several couples celebrating anniversaries - Agnes and Richard Martin - 60 years; Martha and Gilbert Lefner - 55 years; and Cindy and Raymond Tousek - 14 years. State Queen’s Notebook Dear Věstník Readers, On Saturday, October 5, 2019, I attended the SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration in Seaton, and I had such a fantastic time! The night before the event, I cheered at my school’s football game, and thankfully, we won! At the car show, I got to see so many beautiful cars. For the Queen’s Choice award, I chose a 1957 Ford Thunderbird. It was a perfect car; the color was a gorgeous greenish teal color. The car was in good shape, with pretty interior, and not a single dent. After choosing my favorite car, I sang the national anthem and the Czech national anthem - Kde Domov Můj? I also got to meet Miss Texas -
Chandler Foreman. She was super nice! Throughout the day, I helped hand out ballots then I helped hand out trophies to car show winners. I even had a chance to dance with State King Luc and State Duchess Aubrey. It was so nice to see all the nice faces from the SPJST Home Office. Overall, I had such a great time meeting up with Luc, Aubrey, and State Duke Hudson! I can’t wait until my next event! Until next time, Misty Dvorak, age 16 2019-2020 State Queen —SPJST—

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club hosts Halloween Campout
SPJST Lodge 88, Houston kicked off Halloween Week 2019 with a campout for all lodge members on Saturday, October 26. This was a first for us, and I couldn’t be more proud of the turnout. We had just over 100 ghosts and goblins of all ages who descended on the lodge grounds for some frills, thrills, and chills. Everyone enjoyed Halloween movies, bubbles, and the fog-filled
haunted house area. In addition, we watched our hometown Houston Astros win Game Four of the World Series on our two outdoor televisions. The youth provided all the decorations and food for everyone to enjoy. For the ultimate dessert, we roasted marshmallows around a campfire and made homemade s’mores! After a good night’s rest in the back-
yard tents, the youth were already asking for the next campout. So everyone would not go home hungry, breakfast tacos and doughnuts were served as we said “goodbye” . . . until the next time. It was such a great time to get to know everyone and spend some time to share special memories and many firsts with our fraternal family.
I would like to give a special thank you to my family, parents, and lodge members who helped me pull this off. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without all of your help. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Fraternally, Vanessa Guerrero Youth Leader —SPJST—

In Memory of Frances Matthews Frances Catherine Tirk Matthews, age 94, passed away Friday, September 13, 2019. Frances Tirk Matthews grew up on her family farm in Colleyville. She would go on to teach girls’ physical education for 25 years at Carter Riverside High School in Fort Worth. However, it was on the family farm that her ca- Frances Matthews reer in athletics began. Although there were no treadmills, stationary bikes, or workout rooms, there were plenty of cows that needed milking and chores that needed to be done. The outdoors served as Frances and her sister Lydia’s workout room. Frances attended high school in Grapevine where she participated on the girls’ teams and her passion for sports flourished. Once, during a championship game against rival Lewisville, Frances went 11 for 11 from the free throw line to lead her team to victory.
She was also a cheerleader who was beloved by her peers, and she was once voted “Outstanding Student of the Year” by her classmates. Shortly after graduating from the University of North Texas, Frances met her husband Buel Matthews at a dance in the Blackstone Hotel in Fort Worth. They married in 1948 and were together until his passing in 1995. Frances was a passionate supporter of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. Frances was what many would call “a character.” She was mischievous and loved a good laugh. She will be missed by many. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth. Frances was predeceased by husband Buel Matthews; younger brother Joseph Tirk; and older brother Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Tirk, Jr., who was killed in World War II. She is survived by her beloved older sister Lydia (Tirk) Alholm. Burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Fort Worth. —SPJST—

Good Grief News CHILDREN’S GRIEF AWARENESS DAY By Sabrina N. Young, CFSP
❖
Lodge 47, Seaton
What is Children’s Grief Awareness Day? This year, it will be celebrated on November 21, 2019. Children’s Grief Awareness Day was created in 2008 by the Highmark Caring Place, A Center for Grieving Children, and Adolescents and Their Families. Since then, it has been recognized by organizations around the world. Did you know before a child graduates from high school, one out of every 20 children will have a parent die - and that number doesn’t include those who experience the death of a sibling, a grandparent, or even a friend. Children who have experienced the death of someone important to them often feel like their struggles are not understood, and they are left to fend for themselves. These children need advocates, letting all know that the death of someone close is the beginning of many weeks, months, and years of finding ways to go on without that special person in their lives. That simple fact is, children’s grief is often unrecognized so children become disenfranchised grievers - meaning they have been stripped the right to grieve because we think they cannot understand, or we wish to protect them and ourselves. In other cases, the “tell-tale” signs when children are grieving are they often feel set apart, different from their peers, alone, and not understood. It is very common that we may misunderstand the ways their grief is expressed; perhaps in behavioral issues, bedwetting, or even play. I am delighted we have set aside a day to acknowledge their grief - and their need for support. This day raises awareness of grieving children and seeks to change the culture in order to make death and grief a topic that can be spoken of openly and compassionately. Every school and every community has children who have experienced some type of loss. Even if they keep their loss and experience to themselves, there are many children who are grieving among us. These children can be helped to not feel so alone. Children and adults together can show their support for grieving children and show their awareness of what grieving children might be going through by participating in Children’s Grief Awareness Day by wearing blue. It is our goal with the upcoming Young’s Daughters Bereavement Center to educate school staff and provide educational presentations for children to help cope with loss. Loss for children is deemed hard to understand for most. If you would like to participate or have a representative from Young’s Daughters Funeral Home and Bereavement Center come out to give a presentation to the children, please call 254-251-0099 or email Youngsdaughtersfuneralhome@gmail.com for booking a free educational presentation for the staff or for a children’s class. Thank you for your support, and lets color Texas blue on Thursday, November 21. —SPJST —

BROTHERHOOD
★ Založené roku 1897 a tím umožnit naším členům a příznivcům rozšířit známost o naší nadaci mezi širší krajanskou veřejnost. Doposud jsme vykonali kus záslužné práce, když jsme ustanovili katedru českého jazyka, literatury a kultury na Texaské universitě v Austinu, Tx., založili jsme Hlavinkovo stipedium na katedře anglistiky na Zemědělské a mechanické universitě v College Station, Tx a založili jsme hudební katedru na Severotexaské universitě v Dentonu. Tx.
. . Stručně řečeno si tito důležití pracovníci přejí, aby spolupráce mezi nadací a universitou se rozšiřovala po umělecké i finanční stránce ku prospěchu naší hudby, kultury a veřejnosti. Jakoukoli částku, snad i milion dolarů, pošlete na adresu: Cynthia P. Belknap, 2520 Willing Avenue, Fort Worth, Texas 76110. Potřebujeme získat finanční podporu, abychom mohli pokračovat v podpoře dosavad ních tří stipendií a případně zvětšit podporu stipendia v College Station, Texas.
studuje jídlo a potraviny v Čechách a v rámci Evropskeho společenství. —SPJST—

TCGS presents 2019 Christmas Ornament Collection This week, we are pleased to feature six lovely, exquisite 2019 Christmas ornaments that are sure to provide enjoyment this Christmas and for years to come. The majority of our 2019 collection of ornaments was made by the mouth-blown method in the Czech Republic. The ornaments featured this week are associated with traditions, symbols, and/or legends, many of which are associated with the birth of Christ, His crucifixion, or in some form have a spiritual meaning. The entire collection can be seen and purchased at the TCGS Gift Shop, located downstairs at the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street, Temple, Texas. They may be ordered for shipment by contacting Nancy Machu at nbmachu@gmail.com or by calling 512-971-4284. Shipping charges will be added, based on the number of ornaments ordered. Legend of the Nutcracker Red: C19-15 and Green: C19-16 $17.50 each Nutcracker figurines originated in the Erzgebirge area of Germany as early as the 1700s. The first nutcrackers were made of wood due to the ample supply of wood in the region. They were traditionally dressed as soldiers and kings. Villagers took satisfaction in having these authoritative figures perform the menial task of cracking nuts and some may still crack nuts, but the real joy is their colorful presence decorating the home. One wonders why the nutcrackers are never seen with smiles on their faces. The people making them in the early years conveyed their everyday hardships into the dolls that they created. Their lives were hard, the working conditions bad, and they did not get paid very well. The book, The Legend of the Nutcracker and Traditions of the Erzgebirge speaks of an old German folktale describing how the nutcracker came into being. It tells about a farmer who offered a reward to anyone who could help him crack the walnuts that grew on his tree. A carpenter told him to saw the nut in half while a soldier told him to shoot the nut. Finally, a puppet maker came along with a beautiful puppet made of wood and
Monday, November 11, 2019 painted in bright colors, which had strong jaws that could be used to crack the walnuts. This method worked, and the farmer rewarded him by giving him his own workshop. The dolls have been made for the past 250 years in Germany, and it is believed that nutcrackers bring good luck and protect the house and its inhabitants. The red and green nutcrackers in our collection were mouth-blown in the Czech Republic. Each one is individually handpainted and will be a valued possession and collectible. The Tradition of the Snowman Red: C19-18 and Violet: C19-19 $9.50 each Snowman building was a popular form of entertainment in the Middle Ages. They were built with great skill and thought. Some were built by famous artists, including a 19-yearold Michelangelo, who in 1494 was commissioned by the ruler of Florence, Italy, to sculpt a snowman in his mansion’s courtyard. The first snowfall of the year brings out children as well as adults who are young at heart to build a “best ever” snowman. This is a tradition that isn’t practiced very often in Texas! We offer two snowmen, one with a red scarf and hat and one with a green scarf and hat. Either or both would make a terrific addition to your tree, The Legend of the Icicle Red: C19-1 and Clear/White: C19-2 $8 each When Christ the Savior was born that first Christmas, the heavenly angels cried in joyful adoration. Their tears of happiness gently fell to earth that crisp winter night, forming icicles on the edges of the stable and nearby evergreens. These tiny pendants of ice twinkled in the radiant starlight. To this day, icicle ornaments are often used on Christmas trees as reminders of the joyous celebration over the birth of Christ. The Tradition of St. Nicholas and Santa Claus C19-24 - $14 The concept of the American Santa Claus originated with St. Nicholas, who was born in Asia Minor about 280. He was known as a kind, generous man, and he was made a saint because of these traits. December 6 became the traditional day in
Europe for exchanging Christmas gifts, and it was also the date associated with the beginning of the Christmas season. As the tradition moved to the United States with immigrants from Europe, this kind gentleman became known as Santa Claus. He is loved by children of all ages today as a symbol of Christmas. Our roly poly Santa Claus was created in the Czech Republic and will be a delightful ornament on your tree for years to come. The Tradition of the Pickle SL-10 - $7 There are several versions of this tradition, each attributing the legend to different countries. According to German tradition, as the Christmas tree was decorated, a pickle was hidden in the innermost branches of the tree. On Christmas morning, the first child to find the pickle was rewarded with an additional small present left by St. Nicholas. This tradition is observed by many families today, and as the children grow, the family purchases smaller and smaller pickles to make them more difficult to find. The pickle tradition encourages people to take time to enjoy the moment with family and friends and, while searching for the pickle, to enjoy the beauty of the tree and its many ornaments along with the beauty of the season, rather than focusing immediately on the gifts under the tree. The Legend of the Donkey C19-30 - $18 The donkey ornament story spans many years in time, reminding us that the Lord always has a place for us to serve, no matter what our age. This legend lets us tell the story of Jesus and His death on the cross (the reason for His birth) in a most unusual way, a way which will capture one’s attention. About the time that Jesus was born, there was a little donkey that fell into a deep pit and, because he was quite old, his owner decided the best thing to do was to just bury him. Knowing this would be difficult and time consuming, he enlisted the help of several friends and neighbors. They proceeded to dig up dirt, shovel by shovel, and tossed it into the pit onto the donkey. Each time, the donkey
29
would bray very loudly and shake off the dirt. The owner and his friends kept up their task and, being very determined, the donkey did as well. Soon the donkey had shaken off so much dirt he was able to walk out of what was to have been his grave. When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, he was riding on this same little donkey. As Jesus walked to the cross, the donkey followed Him and watched from afar as He suffered on the cross before He died. After watching the torture Jesus was enduring, the donkey could watch no more so he turned his back on the cross that held Jesus. As he did, the shadow of the cross fell upon his back and his shoulders and, unto this day, certain breeds of donkeys have a cross mark on their backs. The donkey ornament can be yours for $18. Ornaments and an array of Czech items are available in the TCGS Gift Shop downstairs at the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main in Temple. —SPJST—
