Editor’s Note
Thankful, Grateful, Blessed Happy Thanksgiving!
The trees are turning colors, and the smell of pumpkin pie is in the air. That means Thanksgiving is here! I love this time of year for so many reasons, but my favorite is being reminded of all the incredible things I have in my life. From a wonderful family to great friends to working for an awesome organization, I have a lot to be thankful for. I have begun the holiday season by celebrating my blessings. Thank you, dear Věstník readers, for your continued support throughout the year. May you and all of our SPJST members enjoy a thankful, grateful, blessed holiday season. Convention Delegate Elections Majority of Meetings Clarification Local lodges across the state are now electing delegates for the 2020 SPJST Convention which will be held June 14 to 16 in Killeen, Texas. SPJST By-Laws state that a member must have attended a majority of meetings during 2019, to qualify to be elected as a delegate to the 2020 Convention. The Supreme Lodge has clarified what constitutes a majority of meetings: For lodges meeting monthly, the number of meetings that constitute a majority is six. For lodges that meet quarterly, the majority is two meetings. For lodges that meet every other month, the majority is three meetings. Proud mom appreciates son’s SPJST Scholarship, Youth Program involvement Dear SPJST, I just wanted to drop a note to share the news that Laramie Cass of Lodge 17, New Tabor was accepted to Texas A&M University in the spring to pursue a degree in rangeland management. He is currently attending Blinn College and will transfer in January. We cannot thank SPJST enough for the scholarship he received his senior year at Caldwell High School and the years of memories we have had with both boys (Laramie and Coy) in SPJST. We still reminisce of the year Laramie was State Duke 2007! Mary Cass Lodge 17, New Tabor —SPJST—

SPJST 2020 VISION An Open Letter to the 2020 SPJST Convention Delegates and Members Dear Brothers and Sisters, Thank you for your willingness to serve as a delegate to the 33rd SPJST Convention taking place Sunday, June 14 through Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. Your attendance and participation are vital to the success of our fraternal order. The SPJST Supreme Lodge depends on the cooperation and goodwill of its convention delegates. Because every area of SPJST operations has its unique challenges and opportunities, it’s important that the SPJST Supreme Lodge do its part — in the months leading to convention — to inform you — and the entirety of our membership — of the matters that will be brought to the floor of the 2020 Convention for discussion and action. This will be an educational process to be communicated primarily through the Vestnik and member forums — namely our 2020 spring District meetings and delegate meetings which will be held in each of the SPJST’s seven districts. The educational aspect of the 2020 SPJST Convention process will extend to the convention itself. Exhibit space is being planned for the event which will enable SPJST’s business partners to visit with delegates and explain the role that they play in our organization’s ongoing mission to remain a strong and relevant fraternal benefit society. Additionally, a series of short videos are being produced that will help to identify the pillars of strength upon which the SPJST is founded.
The objectives of the 2020 Convention — which we are referring to as the 2020 Vision Convention — are threefold: (1) Experience! That delegates to emerge from the 2020 convention process with a greater understanding and appreciation of SPJST, the forces that define and guide our industry, and the elements which can help to drive its success into the future; (2) Discover! That delegates to understand the forces that impact the fraternal life insurance industry, including new and emerging technologies as well as what we can expect to see in the areas of corporate governance, marketing, and fraternal partnerships; (3) Connect! That delegates to expand their personal fraternal network through opportunities to meet one-on-one and in a group setting with fellow delegates, SPJST leaders, and business partners from across Texas and the United States. Your job as delegates to the 2020 SPJST Convention is not to just repeat the past, but to use it to shape the future. As Supreme Lodge President, my driving objective is to ensure the financial security and fraternal relevancy of SPJST. Everything else plugs into that primary objective. To that end, the Supreme Lodge at its July 2019 meeting voted unanimously to conduct a ballot in lieu of convention (referendum) on six bylaw amendments that would better position the Society heading into its 2020
CONVENTION June 14 - 16, 2020 Killeen Civic and Conference Center
Convention. Trust, honesty, and responsibility to the membership and the public are the key pillars of fraternal life insurance. These pillars are generally reinforced through the maintenance of good corporate governance. Corporate governance in the fraternal life insurance industry continues to be a growing focus among state regulators. Broadly speaking, the term describes the processes, practices, and structures through which a society manages its business and works to meet its financial and fraternal objectives and achieve long-term sustainability. Of the six amendments which were approved, two of the measures speak directly to ensuring good corporate governance: (1) Enabling members who attended a majority of the regular meetings of the lodge during one year preceding the Convention to serve as delegates. The pre-existing by-law requirement of three years was considered overly restrictive. If your lodge meets monthly, it will take six meetings to qualify to serve as a delegate. (Please note that this number was changed from seven to six at our most recent October Supreme Lodge meeting.) If your lodge meets bi-monthly, it will take three meetings to qualify to serve as a delegate. If your lodge meets quarterly, it will take two meetings to qualify to serve as a delegate. As this pertains to Supreme Lodge officers, the management positions have become increasingly specialized, demanding a demonstrated ability to per-
form. As such, it is important to ensure that the pool of qualified candidates not be narrowed to such a degree that it limits SPJST’s ability to fill key positions with qualified individuals. (2) Enabling individuals who have been a member for at least one year to serve as Supreme Lodge officers or directors. This was previously a three-year requirement. As this pertains to Supreme Lodge directors, corporate governance standards may mandate that directors possess a specific degree of industry experience, knowledge, and skill, as well as managerial, technical, or other expertise that will better enable them to effectively perform necessary governance and oversight responsibilities. The wholesale modernization of SPJST’s By-Laws which commenced with the 2012 Convention and which were approved by delegates to the 2016 Convention reflect a thoughtful evolution in the history of our fraternal order. We will continue this dialogue leading into the 2020 Convention through the traditional rule-making process as provided for in our SPJST By-Laws. I look forward to the Supreme Lodge finalizing its recommendations to the 2020 Convention at our upcoming January meeting and sharing these with you. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

From the Fraternal Department State Fraternal Director shares December updates
5. 6. 7. 8. 9.
Warm Wishes from the SPJST Home Office Fraternal Department Veselé Vánoce! Christmas is upon us! It seems to come faster and faster each year. I found a quote by Calvin Coolidge and wanted to share it with you: “Christmas is not a time or a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” I truly believe these words. Christmas is what you make of it. In my mind, it’s time to place a log on the fire and curl up on the couch in a blanket with a good book, hot chocolate, and also a time to think back and count our many blessings. It is also time to give thanks to our King Jesus Christ and time to hold those we love close to our hearts. Please let us remember those who are less fortunate and are in need of a helping hand this Christmas. We can all make a positive difference in another’s life. I wish you and your family many blessings. Wishing you a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Give the Gift of Christmas on Any Budget Christmas is the season for charitable giving. It’s the time of year when we should all give a little to those who have less. For those who can afford it, there’s endless opportunities to give someone a merry Christmas. And for those who are already living on a shoestring budget, you’d be surprised at how much you can do. For instance, if you meet the requirements, you could try hair donation. You’ve been wanting a new look anyway. Or how about making a trip to your local blood bank to donate blood? What better gift to give than the gift of life? (And that’s coming from someone who is very grateful for the blood transfusion I received.) So how about it? Are you ready to put a little merry into someone’s Christmas? You can find more ideas at this website. https://holidappy.com/holidays/give-astranger-a-merry-christmas Donation and Volunteer Ideas for Christmas 1. Help a Needy Family 2. Don’t Just Sit There . . . Go Out Into Your Community and Volunteer! “Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another.” —Erma Bombeck SPJST Lifetime Achiever Award The definition of lifetime is the duration of a person’s life. This award is to recognize individuals or couples who have made a significant impact in their lodge’s success and growth over a lengthy period of time. Those individuals or couples should be of a mature age. In the past couple of years, the Home Office has received nomination applications for many young members that still have many years of service to the lodge and its members. Think about it . . . if a young or middle-aged member receives this award, is this telling them that they have achieved their significant impact to their lodge and here on out they are finished contributing to their lodge and its members? The Lifetime Achiever Award form is available on the spjst.org website. Please complete and return the form to SPJST Fraternal Department. Outgoing Officers With the election of new officers, do not forget to honor your lodge officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor these outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not elected to serve in 2020 and does not seek re-election in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at the local lodge meeting. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Everyone spread the word! October 1 started the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive to benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST
has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will run through March 31, 2020. Important Paperwork Everyone, please know that the forms listed below are very important in receiving your enhanced premium refund and other incentives. Please return these forms even if there are no changes from the previous year. Fraternal Activities Coordinators, it is very important to enter and complete your hours by Friday, January 17, 2020 to receive those refunds and other incentives. Please look for the 2019 officer listing that was mailed out the first week of November from Receptionist Tamara Gettys. Lodge 187, Round Rock members enjoy Věstník Czech activities Lodge 187, Round Rock met in October. We discussed the Texas State Fair, the SPJST Convention in Killeen, and our charities. We voted, and now we have our delegates for the convention. Congrats to Rubie Volek and Carla Krenek! Linda Johnson relayed all the local upcoming events. She also reminded all to please continue with giving to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and that all youth will receive two merit points if they donate $2 or more to the fund. Thanks bunches to Carla Krenek for leading the entertainment. The program on Czech heritage was great, and the Czech music set the mood. The kids loved that the Vestnik added a coloring page for Czech Heritage Month. I loved that all members did the word search. It was my personal favorite! Thank you, Rubie Volek, for the door prizes and the idea for all the kiddos to go trick-or-treating to each lodge member. I think that was a brilliant idea! For Make a Difference Day, the youth from the lodge stacked pumpkins, painted pumpkins, and played pumpkin checkers with others at church in Georgetown. October birthday celebrants were Janie Barron, Mona Larson, Karter
Meyer, Xavier Salinas, Sherry Kubicek, Donald Franzen, Joan Boydston, Eugenia, Miller, Emory Leschber, Pauline Urbanke Hoehn, Sandra Hipshir, Sharon Klaus, Kelly Fuessel, Janiece Nelson, Heather Delancy, Charles Parker, Karl David Knape, Mason Stifflemire, Allison Heintze, Lexie Grance Faris, and Vincent Kadlubar. President Barbara Becknell on Wednesday, November 6, 2019, at St. Thomas Community Room. Everyone was welcomed, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. We had 31 present plus two priests. It was a delightful meeting/social. We had some guests Elizabeth Creamer’s daughter Sally and Mary Schaffer’s husband. Barbara Collins, guest of Christine Strieff, joined us and became a new member. We enjoyed having all of you! We missed Betty Carter as her daughter-in-law passed away, and Lorraine Cross who fell and broke her arm. Our sympathy goes out to Betty, and get well wishes go out to Lorraine. Before I start reporting on the November meeting, I need to apologize to two of our members who I failed to write about in my October report: first, to Sharron Connelly who celebrated her birthday on October 7, and we did sing to her, and to Jo Ann Wilcox who brought about 16 of the 18 door prizes we had for the day. Almost everyone won something, and it was such fun getting a “present.” Even Stanley Krenek enjoyed the neck scarf he won and wore. It looked good on him. It was voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes from the last meeting. Treasurer Margaret Sears gave the financial report which was approved as presented.
Nominating committee - Joyce Helgeson, Shirley Martin, and Lupe Garcia - reported they met. On behalf of the committee, Joyce reported the new slate of officers to serve for 2020 are President Barbara Becknell, Vice President Betty Carter, Secretary Mary Schaffer, and Treasurer Margaret Sears. After a vote, all were approved. Further, on behalf of the president, Joyce reported on Barbara’s appointment of committee chairpersons as Historian and Reporter Libbie Vrla; Sunshine Person Darlene Tompkins; Telephone Committee Debbie Skrasek, Elizabeth Creamer, and Linda Powell; and Decorations Lupe Garcia. A special farewell recognition and thanks was given to Jo Ann Wilcox who is moving to Allen, Texas. She and her husband will be living with their son. Jo Ann is a longtime dedicated member having joined the Club on January 7, 2009. She served as treasurer from 2011 to 2016. In looking through my Vestnik reports, she baked several turkeys and hams for our holiday luncheons, brought Christmas decorations over the years, served on the nominating committee, and was always willing to help in any way possible. She also donated many door prizes over these 10 years. She will be greatly missed. Allen isn’t all that far so maybe she can sometimes surprise us with a visit. Our Christmas social/meeting was discussed. Barbara will purchase the ham for our lunch so all of us need to bring a dish to complement ham. Rather than exchanging gifts, Liz Caron from St. Vincent de Paul Society suggested we bring Walmart gift cards, and they
23
will either buy toys for the children or use however needed. Each member can decide on the amount of gift card to give. Hostesses for December will be Joyce Helgeson and Darlene Tompkins. Sunshine Person Darlene Tompkins reported on sending a get well card to Jimmy and Rose Ann Spann, and sympathy cards to Harold Strand and Helen Skrasek on the death of Adele Strand. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Harold and Helen. Rose Ann thanked the Club for the get well card she and Jimmy received. Libbie reported on Adele Strand’s funeral in Waco which I wrote about in my last Vestnik article. Harold has since moved in with daughter Donna Feuge in Hurst. A sign-up sheet was distributed for each member to select the month they wish to serve as hostesses and to pick up the fried chicken. Remember, if you have a disability, you are excused. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to November celebrants Liz Caron, Elizabeth Creamer, and Mary Agnes Ward. May you all have many more. This was a special birthday for Elizabeth who will be 100 years young on November 22. Daughter Sally brought her, and had Elizabeth decked out with a 100-year birthday sash and tiara. Before the meeting, Barbara called each member to bring her a birthday card, and Lupe decorated a box for the cards. As it turned out, Elizabeth got so many cards that the box could not hold all of them. Barbara also brought a birthday cake with “100” on top so we had a fun 100-year birthday party for Elizabeth. Barbara read a list of things that took place 100 years ago which was enjoyed by all. We had several door prizes with one being a special donation from Lydia Alholm, who is a member but has not been attending our meetings. It was two sets of kitchen towels. The lucky winner was our new member Barbara Collins. I hear that Barbara sent Lydia a nice thank you note which Lydia enjoyed and appreciated very much. Thanks, Lydia, for your donation. The 50-50 dollar game drawing was held. Winners were Marilyn Llewellyn and Kathy Thome. Congratulations, ladies! This was a designated month in which we support St. Vincent de Paul Society. A total of $117 was collected and donated. Thanks, ladies, for your support.

Kathy Thome who takes communion to Tracy Horn each week reported that Tracy spent a few days in the hospital, but is now back at the assisted living facility. Tracy called me the other day. She said she is feeling much better and thanks everyone for all the cards she has been receiving. A get well card was signed by all for Tracy. I had lots of good comments on our former member Kitty Rippen’s trip to visit the Museum on World War II in New Orleans. I have since learned that she has been invited to go on a same type of trip to Washington, D.C. She leaves on December 6, and I believe she said it was a two-day trip. Pearl Harbor will be featured, but she does know they will visit the White House. I asked her to call me when she returns so that I can write about it. She did say they will have wheelchairs for everyone, and she is worried about the cold weather. Hostesses for December will be Joyce Helgeson and Darlene Tompkins. For the last two months, some of us have been bringing scratch-off lottery tickets as extra game prizes, but it was reported that this is optional. But, if you don’t bring a lottery ticket, you are not eligible for one if you win a game. I have to admit, I did win two games last month, and ended up with four lottery tickets. After all the scratching off, I didn’t know if I won anything or not! I took the tickets in where I had bought my tickets earlier, and won $1 on one ticket and $5 on the other. Guess what? I’ll bring lottery tickets next month again! Sharron Connelly and Anna Marie Moncrief enjoyed attending the 35th anniversary celebration of the Carmelite Auxiliary with Mass at the Carmelite Monastery and lunch following at the Rose Garden Tea Room in Arlington. Sharron said it was a beautiful affair. It seems for the past few months, I have written about a member of our Club passing away. This has been another sad week. While they are not members, they are related to our late members. First, Curtiss Dougan passed away suddenly on November 9. Curtiss was the grandson-in-law of the late Emil and Sally Milan. Emil was the son of Anna Milan (original Club charter member) and brother to the late Milan Club members - Mary Renfro, Joe and Carrie Bell Milan, Jeanie Mason, and Rosie Steinman. On November 16, Donna Rose Parker passed away unexpectedly. She was a daughter of the late Rosie Steinman. Our sympathy goes out
VĚSTNÍK to Curtiss’ wife Christy Dougan and Donna Rose’s husband Jerry Parker. Following the meeting, grace was said, and we enjoyed a wonderful lunch of turkey, dressing, and gravy which was prepared by Jon Durham of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth, and it was delicious. We all signed a thank you card for him. The next meeting will be Wednesday, December 4. Happy Thanksgiving to all. So Until, Keep Smiling. Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

State Fraternal Director shares December news Happy Holidays I hope you and your families have a wonderful Thanksgiving. There is so much that we need to be thankful for — the gifts that God provides us, family, friends, and the SPJST Youth Program. Let me be the first to wish you all a merry Christmas! Christmas is a month away, and we are fast approaching the final days of 2019. We will be saying hello to 2020 and ringing in a new decade. I know the SPJST Youth Program has gone through some changes; however, one thing is for certain, and that is this program creates future leaders within SPJST, school, their future careers, and the communities they serve. I want to see this program be successful and grow again. Youth Leaders, I want to work with you and have roundtable discussions at this year’s Youth Leaders Work-
shop at Camp Kubena. You are an important part of this program. I want to find solutions to the changes we face; afterall, our youth are worth it, and I can’t do it alone! I know some of the challenges are out of our hands, but together, we can brainstorm and come up with creative solutions. I will leave you with a quote from former Chick-fil-A Vice President Dee Ann Turner, “Be vigilant in teaching and modeling the reason you do what you do. Remember that the purpose of the organization is much bigger than the individuals of which it is composed. It can be a powerful unifying force in the culture.” 2020 Vestnik Projects In 2020, our theme is “Superheroes Unite!” Each month, the Vestnik Project will reflect upon a great Czech, American, or Texas Superhero. This will be a great opportunity for your youth to learn about some of the great men and Women of history.

Washing Your Hands
How many times did you hear that today? Probably a lot. But why are adults so hung up on hand washing? Why are they so in love with lather?
Chris does not want to get sick. First help him decide when he needs to wash his hands, and second help him learn the best way to wash his hands. Check the Yes or No below to let Chris know if he should wash his hands or not.
Junior Camp Session 1 Thursday, July 9 to Sunday, July 12, 2020 Camp Kubena in Ledbetter
Washing your hands is the best way to stop germs from spreading. Think about all of the things that you touched today — from the telephone to the toilet. Maybe you blew your nose in a tissue and then went outside to dig around the dirt. Whatever you did today, you came into contact with germs. It’s easy for a germ on your hand to end up in your mouth. Think about how many foods you eat with your hands.
Junior Camp Session 2 Thursday, July 16 to Sunday, July 19, 2020 Camp Kubena in Ledbetter
You can’t wear rubber gloves all day long, but you can wash your hands so those germs don't get a chance to make you or someone else sick. When germs go down the drain, they can’t make anyone sick.
State Youth Achievement Day Saturday, July 25, 2020 Cultural Activities Center in Temple —SPJST—
So when are the best times to wash your hands? • Before eating or preparing food. • After using the bathroom. • After blowing your nose or coughing. • After touching pets or other animals. • After playing outside. • After visiting a sick relative or friend. Now you have the when and the why of hand washing. But did you know that a lot of people don't know how to get their paws perfectly clean? The next time you're told to step up to the sink and scrub up, remember these handy hints: 1. Use warm water (not cold or hot) when you wash your hands. 2. Use whatever soap you like. Some soaps come in cool shapes and colors or smell nice, but whatever kind that gets you scrubbing is the kind you should use. Antibacterial soaps are okay to use, but regular soap works fine. 3. Work up some lather on both sides of your hands, your wrists, and between your fingers. Don’t forget to wash around your nails. This is one place germs like to hide. Wash for about 10 to 15 seconds - about how long it takes to sing “Happy Birthday.” (Sing it quickly two times or just once if you go nice and slow.) 4. Rinse and dry well with a clean towel.

December 15— Quarterly Reports Due Please make every attempt to submit your quarterly reports by December 15. This is the report for September, October, and November. This report is used to help determine youth club funding and incentives. Not turning in a report could mean losing hundreds of dollars for your youth club. With the changes of the SPJST youth year, leaders, you will complete only the month of December on the next quarterly report and turn the report in by January 15. New sheets for the youth year that starts on January 1, 2020, are available at spjst.org. 2020 SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design “SPJST — Superheroes Unite!” is the youth year theme. The exclamation
mark will be a lightening bolt. Complete information and an official entry form are available at spjst.org. I would really like for youth leaders to encourage some discussion on this topic during your next couple of meetings. Please encourage all of your youth club members to enter. The grand prize is a $100 Visa gift card and a free tee-shirt for the winner. Contest deadline is January 31. All participants receive two merit points and a participation certificate. 2020 Changes Youth Leaders please be advised of the changes with junior camps. We have decided to go back to our camping schedule from years past. Junior camps will start on Thursday and go through Sunday. Registration for junior camps is
from 2 to 3 p.m. This will help cut the cost of camp and will benefit chaperones from using their vacation time to help at camp. This will be a time of transition for the youth year, and we will make accommodations for all youth on camp ages and YAD ages. Youth from June 1, 2019, to December 31, 2019, need to have attended a majority of meetings which is four meetings instead of seven. However, if any SPJST active youth have not made those four meetings in that time period, they do have the time from January 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020, to make that up. Since this year is a transition year, we will review all issues that may arise and strongly consider the issue in favor of the youth. We are working on the 2020 Youth Handbook right now. The new
27
book will be on the website January 1, 2020, but will be printed later with the youth tee-shirt design on the cover before the Youth Leaders Workshop. Youth Leaders Workshop The 2020 Youth Leaders Training will be held at Camp Kubena starting Friday evening, March 20 with a hayride, social time, discussion around the campfire, s’mores, etc. On Saturday, we will kick off at 8:45 a.m. with breakfast, 9:30 a.m. - reviewing the 2020 youth handbook, outside training, and team building. Camp Kubena Director Rob Clift will be certified for the Child Welfare and Protection training in 2020. SPJST will not be using Expert Online training any more. All SPJST Youth Leaders and
Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club makes a difference in the community with fall activities SPJST Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club has had a busy fall, participating in the Burleson County Fair and Parade, dancing at Kolache Festival in Caldwell, playing school volleyball and football, and studying. Two beseda circles danced at Brazos Valley World Fest in College Station on Saturday, November 9. It was a chilly morning, and the provided CD player wasn’t working properly so we performed the entire beseda with no music. The youth did an excellent job remembering the dance. The youth have also been in a very giving spirit as we begin to prepare for the holiday season. The youth
club had two Make a Difference Day projects. At the November meeting, we donated fruit and snacks and made goodie bags that we then distributed to the elderly and shut-ins of the community. Thanksgiving greeting cards were also made and attached to the goodie bags. Second, the youth and adult lodge along with Snook Brethren Church Christian Sisters have been collecting items for Operation Christmas Child Boxes. The boxes were packed full of personal necessities as well as toys and school supplies. Boxes will be distributed to less fortunate children around the world.

The Lodge 9 Christmas social and youth Christmas program will be Sunday, December 15. A blessed Thanksgiving is wished to all. Fraternally, Loree Lewis, Youth Leader —SPJST—

Naše finanční tajemnice Mary Lou Mynář předala velmi pěknou zprávu o našich financích a peníze v obou bankách pěkně přibývají Připravila seznam spolků a organisací, kterým chceme darovat nějaké peníze, když nás opět potěší tancem na naši letošní vánoční besídce. . TCGS presents 2019 Christmas Ornament Collection Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) is happy to introduce our fourth installment of Christmas ornaments that connect to various traditions, legends or symbols. There is still plenty of time to order or to visit our gift shop in the lower level of the SPJST Home Office, 520 North Main Street, Temple, Texas. We will be open the following dates and times: Monday, December 2 to Friday, December 6 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, December 9 to Friday, December 13 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ornaments may be ordered for shipment by contacting Nancy Machu at 512-218-1559 or sending an email to nbmachu@gmail.com. Shipping charges depend on the number of ornaments ordered. The TCGS Gift Shop will be closed from December 14, 2019, through January 7, 2020, and will look forward to serving you in 2020, beginning on January 8. Our entire organization wishes you a most blessed and joyous Christmas and a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year 2020. Thank you for your friendship and patronage in 2019. Nativity Relief Ornament TSL56 - $18 This beautiful, glass ornament, created in a relief design, depicts the Christmas Story. One view shows the stable that sheltered the Holy Family as they marveled at their tiny baby. The shepherds, who had been guarding their sheep, along with the three wisemen, who came from afar, bearing gifts for the new baby, are illustrated. The opposite side shows the city of Bethlehem, with the star shining brightly above the place where Jesus lay.
VĚSTNÍK Gold and White Glass Cross C19-23 - $12 To Christians, the cross symbolizes faith, salvation, and eternal life, which was given to believers everywhere when Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross for the sins of mankind and arose from the dead. Because Christ suffered pain and death on the cross, this divine and humbling symbol helps us to be mindful of our beliefs and duties as Christians. Faith in Christ helps us cope with the burden of the crosses we bear. Crafted of glass and embellished with shimmering shades of gold and pearl, the old rugged cross is transformed into something beautiful, just as Christ’s love transforms our hearts! The Holy Cross makes a perfect gift for everyone on your gift list. Symbol of the Fish SL-16 - $9 Jesus was a shepherd of souls and a fisher of men. He fed the crowd of 5,000 with two fish and five loaves. He called his disciples “fishers of men.” Accordingly, people use a fish as the ultimate symbol to distinguish themselves as Christians. Fish represent fertility and renewal of life. Just as fish are born in water, Christians are born in the water of baptism through Jesus Christ, who invites us all to become “fishers of men.” The letters of the Greek word for fish, “Ichthus,” are the first letters of the Greek phrase for “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior. Boxed Set of Nativity Ornaments C19-28 - $13 This set of four identical ornaments, in colors of deep blue, white, and gold depict the Holy Night long ago when Jesus was born. The ornaments tell the Christmas story on a smooth, handpainted glass ball, featuring the manger, the star of Bethlehem, the wise men, and the shepherds. These ornaments will look beautiful on any Christmas tree and would make a terrific gift.
The following three ornaments are ornaments of a whimsical nature. There are no legends or traditions associated with these ornaments; however, they are interesting to a select group of people who have personal memories of similar items in their lives. All three of these ornaments were mouth-blown and handpainted in the Czech Republic. Black Car C19-4 - $17.50 The black car reminds one of bygone days and some of the first cars made in the world, which were always black. Locomotive C19-5 - $15.50 This brightly painted, mouthblown locomotive would make a terrific first ornament for a young child. Starting a child’s collection of ornaments when they are young is a great idea and a gift that will keep on giving as he or she grows up. Happy Hippo C19-6 - $13 Our little brown hippo seems to be a happy fellow. He has a smile on his face! Children love animal ornaments, and the young people who attend Hutto High School would love a hippo for their trees. Submitted by, Nancy Machu Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—

Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas gifts $2,800 to support Blinn College Czech language students Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) has gifted $2,800 to the Blinn College Foundation to establish scholarships for students who take Czech language classes at the BlinnSchulenburg Campus. The Blinn College District is one of only two higher education institutions in the state to offer Czech language classes for college credit. This fall, the Schulenburg Campus began offering college-credit courses that can satisfy foreign language requirements at fouryear universities. The donation will be used to boost
VĚSTNÍK enrollment in Czech language classes, said Becky Garlick, Executive Dean of the Schulenburg Campus. “Our goal is to increase enrollment of dual credit students in our area who want to learn Czech,” Garlick said. “They can take Czech to fulfill the requirement for two years of a foreign language.” CESAT President and Blinn College Czech Language Professor Thadious Polasek said the organization looks for ways to promote the Czech language and culture, and is helping Blinn students meet that goal. “The most important goal CESAT must strive for is the increased ethnic awareness of our people in Texas through the expansion of Czech language classes in Texas,” Polasek said. “CESAT accepts the membership of any person interested in our Czech heritage and the preservation of the Czech
language in Texas.” Mr. Polasek is also a member of SPJST Lodge 67, Schulenburg. Blinn offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced Czech courses online and at the Schulenburg Campus. High school students can take the courses through Blinn’s Dual Credit Program, which allows students to earn credits toward a college degree while satisfying the requirements for high school graduation. TCGS December Book of the Month: Welcome to Hovezi Many Czech immigrants came to Texas from the Vsetin area of Moravia in the Czech Republic. The village of Hovezi is located in Vsetin County and was first mentioned in the County Record Estate Books of Olomouc in 1504. Translated into English by Jan and Jana Vaculik and Tomas Pansky, it was published by Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) in 2007. The Hovezi City Council’s goal in writing the book was to portray the history of the village and highlight the changes that have occurred in the lives of its people, especially in the areas of living conditions, knowledge, lifestyles, and op-
