Editor’s Note

2020 SPJST Calendars coming soon

Lodges around the state host many great events throughout the year. I have enjoyed attending several of these events over the past few weeks including Lodge 66, Waco’s anniversary luncheon on November 2; Lodge 88, Houston’s grand opening of its new, beautiful playground; and Lodge 54, West’s Christmas party on December 1. Christmas parades are also in full swing, and it has been fun visiting with the members who are hosting the float in their community parades. Thanks to our lodges for the wonderful hospitality at these events. In addition, it was very special to witness the award recognition ceremonies for three SPJST members who have poured their hearts and lives into Czech heritage. Congratulations to Retta Slavik Chandler of Lodge 25, Ennis; Bill and the late Effie Rosene of Lodge 232, Houston Midtown; and Alice Sefcik Sulak of Lodge 47, Seaton. 2020 SPJST Calendars We will soon be mailing 2020 SPJST Calendars to all members who are receiving the mailed Věstník and to those who have requested a calendar. Pending the mail service, calendars should be received prior to Christmas. If you know of an SPJST member who would like a calendar, please complete the form at spjst.org, and we will mail a calendar to the member. Sincere Sympathy We extend heartfelt sympathy to State Fraternal Director Frank Horak and his family. Frank’s father, Ed Horak, passed away on Saturday, November 23 in Temple. Funeral service was at Crotty Funeral Home on Saturday, November 30. Burial followed at Bellwood Memorial

Park Cemetery. Mr. Horak was a member of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland. His obituary appears on page 16 of this week’s Věstník. Correction The total Liabilities and Reserves number in the “SPJST Financial Statement as of September 30, 2019” that appeared in the November 25, 2019, Věstník on page 5 is incorrect. The correct total is $244,930,266. We regret the error. Stay Tuned! Upcoming Věstník features include scenes from Lodge 54, West Christmas party; scenes from Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy Christmas party; and District Six youth participate in the El Campo Christmas Parade.

Building relationships remains key element in growing SPJST Dear Brothers and Sisters, That SPJST continues to thrive as a fraternal benefit society after more than 122 years is a testament to the power of a good idea. Generations of fraternalists have supported and built upon this idea of doing good for each other and the communities that we serve. Achieving success within the fraternal realm is dependent upon building relationships. A Harvard study found that 85 percent of professional success comes from people’s networking skills while 15 percent has to do with related technical skills and job knowledge. Simply stated, SPJST’s past successes and future success depends on our ongoing ability to connect with our members and with others in the community. I’ve always believed that building and maintaining relationships is the most important aspect of growing the SPJST. That applies as much to nurturing a strong lodge program as it does to nurturing a strong business. It builds trust. Our founders intimately understood the perspectives and needs of their members to whom their products and services were targeted and felt personally connected in a way that unleashed their energy and humanity. Even

VĚSTNÍK today, lodges with strong fraternal leaders are ripe with members who have the ability to communicate and collaborate. It goes on throughout the year; however, it’s especially evident during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. Here’s a good example of what I’m talking about: SPJST Lodge 88, Houston is our largest lodge in the state. They have a beautiful lodge hall in a spacious parklike setting in the Houston Heights area. In recent years, the lodge hall has emerged as one of the most popular Thursday night entertainment venues in the city . . . thanks to bingo! “If you arrive less than an hour before SPJST Lodge 88 bingo night starts, good luck finding a parking space,” writes Morgan Kinney in a recent issue of Houstonia in an article entitled, “A Look Inside Houston’s Best Bingo Night.” He continues, “Most Thursdays, a capacity crowd of more than 700 floods the Heights-area compound as it transforms from a sleepy community center into a boisterous celebration overflowing with a hip, all-ages crowd.” Talk about networking opportunities! I joined in the pre-Thanksgiving Thursday night bingo party and can attest: I had a wonderful time! Great efforts are being made at Lodge 88, Houston to position the lodge as a progressive, family-oriented activity center while holding on to traditional Czech celebrations and amending them with engaging new options like the Friday night beer garden. On a related note, SPJST Lodge 88, Houston has experienced a dramatic influx of new members in recent months, thanks, in large part, to the lodge’s idyllic Heights location and opportunities to add ad-

Theretta Makes a Point Theretta Praslicka, accompanied by daughter Kim Bland, points to “her chair” during the Lodge 92, Fort Worth Christmas party. In its efforts to generate member support for recent renovations, Lodge 92, Fort Worth encouraged members to “name a chair” in exchange for a capital fund donation. Like many others, the Praslicka family took full advantage of the opportunity and named 14 chairs in honor of family members, all of whom are longtime and devoted members of Lodge 92, Fort Worth. “We love that hall,” says Theretta. “Frank, who passed away in 2017, and I danced for 65 years on that dance floor. We’ve been there so long and just love what it means to the family.”

ditional amenities, including an expansive new playground and a swimming pool planned for next summer. “We’ve been blessed,” says Lodge 88, Houston Trustee Chairman Ashley Victorick, “We have our longtime and devoted members and now we have lots of new members who are excited and who want to preserve and build upon the old traditions.” “Even the lodge Christmas party,” he says, “is taking on a fresh new look. The youth and adults will be celebrating together and creating Christmas cards for the residents of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville and for men and women who are serving in the armed forces.” Speaking of Christmas parties, Joan and I had a great time at the SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth Christmas party this past

Another Great Networking Opportunity Located at 1435 Beall Street — in the heart of the Houston Heights, one of Houston’s most popular neighborhoods — SPJST Lodge 88, Houston welcomes bingo players every Thursday night with the exception of some noted dates which can be found on the lodge’s event calendar. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. for play which begins at 7 p.m. As it says on the lodge’s website, “Come early, catch up with old friends, meet new friends, celebrate birthdays, engagements, divorces, or whatever floats your boat. We welcome you and your family to the best party ever at the best budget ever.” An energized crowd of approximately 575 players, pictured above, turned out to enjoy the party-like atmosphere of the November 21 game night. All the more amazing when you consider that the Houston Texans were playing at home that night!

Sunday at National Hall. What made it such a wonderful experience was that the event organizers were incredibly hospitable hosts! I even had a chance to “sit in” with the band! All of the ingredients were there: Good food, good music, and good cheer! Everyone was so friendly! On top of that, the lodge hall looked fantastic! In recent times, lodge members have devoted considerable effort and resources towards restoring and upgrading their lodge hall. The resulting “wow factor” was truly worth the effort! The historic detailing reflects a membership that is both proud of its past and ready to take on the future with a fresh new look . . . Having said that, I could identify quite a few of our lodges that have experienced major facelifts in recent years . . . Thinking ahead to 2020: I would love to see a special issue of the Vestnik dedicated to profiling our 39 lodges that continue to maintain lodge properties. My sincere thanks to the men and women, boys and girls of the SPJST who are building new and upon existing relationships and preserving the fraternal spirit of the SPJST. How can you define fraternal spirit? It’s an energy — a soul — that makes its home in a hundred places across our great state — in small communities and large cities. It inspires people to contribute their time, talents, money, and enthusiasm. It fosters a sense of connection and mutual purpose. As long as this fraternal spirit persists, there will always be an SPJST. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

Lodge 88, Houston Playground Grand Opening Friday, November 15, 2019 • Lodge 88, Houston Laughter. Running. Jumping. Climbing. Swinging. Sliding. The evening of Friday, November 15, 2019, was filled with happiness and a sense of accomplishment as youth and adults gathered in the backyard of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston for the grand opening of a new playground. “This was a great experience where the adults and youth worked together,” Lodge 88, Houston Youth Leader Vanessa Guerrero said. “The youth told us what they wanted, and the adults worked hard to make it happen.” Youth club members were appreciative to

everyone who helped with the project. “We had more than 75 families contribute to the playground, and I would like to thank every single one of them for making this dream come true,” Youth Club President Anahi Guerrero said. Robert and Raycene Hilsher represented all of the families who donated to the project. “I wish we would have everyone here who contributed, but that’s not possible,” Anahi added. “I am very proud to be a member of this great organization.” Youth Club Secretary Megan Pflughaupt thanked the lodge’s board of trustees for matching the donations that were given. “We

also thank the board for asking for our opinion on the equipment that was selected for the playground,” she said. Youth club member Addison Brown recognized the Swim Club for its donation and hard work. “We know it wasn’t easy to get this done. The Swim Club organized the donation website, got bids for the project, and oversaw the construction,” she said. Youth Leader Guerrero acknowledged the efforts of former Lodge 88 Youth Leader Barbara Linney-Gonzalez, who retired as youth leader in 2018 after 30 years of service. “Ms. Barbara started the idea of upgrad-

ing the playground,” Ms. Guerrero said. “Because of all of her hard work in the kitchen on Thursday nights at bingo, the youth club was able to donate $15,000 to the playground.” After the dedication, representatives from the youth club, lodge, Swim Club, and bingo kitchen volunteers cut a red ribbon signifying the playground’s grand opening. Youth then enjoyed playing on the swings, merry-goround, slides, see-saws, and climbing web. Congratulations to Lodge 88, Houston on its beautiful new playground! —SPJST—

TCGS December Book of the Month: Welcome to Hovezi Many Czech immigrants came to Texas from the Vsetin area of Moravia in the Czech Republic. The village of Hovezi is located in Vsetin County and was first mentioned in the County Record Estate Books of Olomouc in 1504. Welcome to Hovezi was first published in the Czech language in 2004 by the Hovezi City Council to commemorate the 500year anniversary of the village. Translated into English by Jan and Jana Vaculik and Tomas Pansky, it was published by Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) in 2007. The Hovezi City Council’s goal in writing the book was to portray the history of the village and highlight the changes that have occurred in the lives of its people, especially in the areas of living conditions, knowledge, lifestyles, and opportunities for future generations. This 213-page soft-bound book is a collection of articles and stories from ancient and recent times, including an index of 800-plus surnames and 400-plus villages. Many of the surnames included are found in various parts of the United States, especially Texas. Welcome to Hovezi would be of interest to historians and genealogists. If you order before December 31, 2019, TCGS will waive the shipping and handling fees. To order, send a check payable to TCGS for $20 per book to: TCGS, c/o Nancy Machu, 11 Stillmeadow, Round Rock, Texas 78664. Civil Society Vision Award Retta Slavik Chandler American Friends of the Czech Republic is pleased to present its Civil So-

ciety Vision Award to Retta Slavik Chandler for her leadership in promoting and celebrating the heritage of Texans of Czech ancestry. Retta Slavik Chandler was born in Milam County, Texas, of Moravian ancestry. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics at the University of Texas where she was active in the University’s Czech club. Retta married Charles Chandler in 1956, and together they raised two children, Susan and Ken. (Susan is currently the director of the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple.) Retta taught high school math for 30 years in the Killeen and Cedar Hill school districts. She also served as an adjunct professor of math at Cedar Valley College and co-authored three math workbooks. Always proud of her family’s roots, Retta has been the president of The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center since its founding in 1997. In 1995, Czech-related organizations launched a statewide effort to create a center to preserve and promote the history, heritage, and culture of the people of Czech ethnicity. The project was spearheaded by Texans of Czech Ancestry, an umbrella organization, whose president was Retta. Of the four communities that submitted proposals to host the center, Fayette County, with the largest Czech population per capita and

Under Retta’s unflagging leadership, the Center has evolved from a single desk housed in the La Grange Area Chamber of Commerce, to a one-room office in a professional building, to today’s complex, including the Main Center building with offices, a gift shop, conference rooms, a library, and a museum, complemented by the ever-expanding Czech Village and the amphitheater. Today, the Center celebrates the Czech heritage of many Texans through education, study, and preservation. The Center also promotes cultural exchanges. It hosts performances and exhibitions and provides a library, archives, meeting spaces, and information. In 2007, the Center was honored with the Gratias Agit award presented by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Retta has served as Vice President of the Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas, Director of Texans of Czech Ancestry, and Chairman of the Dallas Czech Historical Society (KJT). She has also been a member of the Dallas Czech Singers, Sokol-Ennis, and the Czech Heritage Society, Ennis Chapter. her Czech heritage, but as an adult she developed a passion to establish and build an organization to showcase the historical achievements and heritage of Americans of Czech descent, and to present the rich artistic accomplishments of past and contemporary Czechs and Slovaks. Once the Czech Center Museum Houston was incorporated in March 1996, Effie and Bill worked tirelessly to establish a permanent home to showcase the best of Texas Czech heritage. They raised more than $4.5 million from more than 6,000 individuals, with assistance from local as well as national and international sources. The permanent Czech Center Museum Houston, a three-story multipurpose facility built in a Baroque style, was completed in September 2004 and is geographically positioned as the gateway to Houston’s Museum District. The Czech Center Museum Houston, one of Houston’s 18 fine museums, provides unique educational experiences based on authentic objects, art, music, and stories about the lives of Czech, Slovaks, and people of other cultures who left their countries to seek liberty and democracy in America. It promotes and celebrates the immigrant history shared by Americans. Effie and Bill have been involved with American Friends of the Czech Republic and the Texas Czech Physicians Exchange Program. The late Effie Rosene and her husband Bill, the founders of the Czech Center Museum Houston, have enhanced cultural life in Houston and preserved the heritage of Americans of Czech and Slovak descent. In May of this year, we lost Effie. But we will forever honor her legacy, as we remember a generous and tireless benefactor of the local, national, and global Czech community. For these reasons, AFoCR presents Effie Rosene, posthumously, and Bill Rosene with this award today. e e

History of the American Friends of the Czech Republic Since its founding in 1995, the American Friends of the Czech Republic (AFoCR) has been the voice of the American constituency supporting the Czech people. AFoCR fosters closer ties between the United States and the Czech Republic. It informs government leaders, the media, and the American public about the history and aspirations of this important country at the heart of Europe, and it enhances understanding, friendship, and respect between the peoples of the two countries. AFOCR has advocated for Czech membership in key Western institutions, especially NATO and the European Union, which were achieved in 1999 and 2004, respectively. In 1998, it received the Gratias Agit award for its NATO advocacy from the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2002, AFoCR built the

and 2019. AFoCR co-sponsors the annual Czech and Slovak Freedom Lecture Series in Washington. In 1989, the Czech people broke free of 50 years of Nazi and communist domination and set out to create a free, democratic, and prosperous future. In just 30 years, the Czech Republic has achieved a vibrant democracy, a thriving economy and has been key to the development of Central Europe. As a NATO member, the Czech Republic has deployed military forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan, incurring casualties in both theaters. In future years, AFoCR seeks to further develop and enhance the American relationship to the Czech Republic, a vital ally in Central Europe and a stable, democratic force committed to freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. —SPJST—

Texas dance hall preservation honors alice sulak with lifetime achievement award More than 200 attendees joined Texas Dance Hall Preservation (TDHP) for a reception and dance honoring Alice Sefcik Sulak with TDHP’s Lifetime Achievement Award at Tom Sefcik Hall on Sunday, November 17, 2019. Dignitaries or their representatives from the US Congress, Governor’s office. Texas Senate and House, Bell County Commissioners Court, Temple Mayor, Preservation Texas, and SPJST Home Office all recognized Alice, who is a 49-year member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. She was praised for her lifelong commitment to the Seaton community, her family, Czech culture, music, and dance and the hall her father built in 1923 in east Bell County. Four generations of Alice’s family attended along with extended family and many well wishers. In addition to the Texas Dance Hall Preservation Lifetime Achievement Award, the City of Temple named November 17 as “Alice Sefcik Sulak Day;” a flag was flown over the state capitol in Austin in Alice’s honor; she received a proclamation from Governor Abbott; and

she was mentioned in the United Congress where her name was printed in the official recordbooks. Sister Alice, who will celebrate her 89th birthday on January 17, 2020, is believed to be the longest-running individual dance hall owner and manager in Texas history. Alice is a renowned Czech vocalist and saxophonist. She is a founding member of Jerry Haisler and the Melody 5, a band she has played with for more than 50 years. Alice was born and still lives in the house next door to the dance hall, which her parents built in 1923. She took over management of the hall from her father, Tom, in 1970. Today, she continues to manage the downstairs bar and upstairs dance hall with the help of her son Kenny and his family. She’s been honored by both the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center and the International Polka Association for her musical contributions to Texas, and she was also featured in the short documentary film, Noc na Tanečku - Night at the Dance. —SPJST—
