erry Christmas to our Věstník Readers! Wishing you a blessed Christmas surrounded by those you hold most dear. May your day and holiday season be filled with peace, joy, and good health, and may memories fill your heart with happiness beyond measure! Best wishes for a happy, healthy, and successful 2020! Best Wishes, Philip McBee! We received a note from Philip McBee, FICF, CFFM of Lodge 204, Stephenville. Philip announced his retirement as of December 20. He was most recently serving as District Four Regional General Agent. He has also served as Fraternal Field Manager in Districts One, Two, Three, and Four over the past 14 years. “I think it is time to take a break,” Philip says. “The thing I will miss the most will be the interaction with the sales agents as I have made a lot of great friends over the years.” We thank Philip for his dedication to SPJST, and we wish him the best in his retirement. Not Just for Kids Appearing on page 25 of this week’s Věstník, you’ll notice the profile article on Astronaut Eugene Cernan. The profile is part one of a 12-part series on “Super Heroes” which will be run in 2020 as part of the SPJST Youth Program’s monthly Věstník project. The idea is that heroes are important and serve a purpose in our society, helping to inspire, giving people hope, and providing examples for success. It’s my understanding that many of the heroes being featured will have a Czech connection like Astro-
naut Cernan whose mother was of Czech descent. I wonder who will be next . . . Stay Tuned! Upcoming Věstník features include scenes from Lodge 24, Cyclone Christmas party; scenes from Lodge 180, Burleson Christmas party; Czech Heritage Museum Christmas Open House scenes; S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Center in Taylor partners with Senior Crimestoppers® and Eagle Bank (a branch of Round Top State Bank); and Home Office assists families in need with Christmas gifts.

SPJST Scholarship Application Season continues through January 31 by Brian Vanicek SPJST President Thank you to each and every one of you who donated money in 2019 to support the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive, Memorial Fund, and SPJST’s endowed scholarships. Your contributions combined with the allocation enabled by delegates to the 2016 SPJST Convention enabled many of our deserving young people to pursue a higher education. Not only do scholarship recipients learn specific subject matter, they learn the importance of philanthropy and giving back. Without the kindness of others, the road to a degree would likely have been much more difficult. Hopefully, this sentiment continues with them through life, and they find ways to donate to scholarships in the future. No Time Like the Present! If you didn’t give, it isn’t too late! Donations are accepted year-round, are always appreciated, and are 100 percent tax-deductible. Established in 1983, SPJST’s Scholarship Program is funded by an allocation of the SPJST Convention and through the contributions of SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available the more scholarships that are awarded. It all adds up. Since its inception, approximately 2,400 scholarships have been awarded totaling more than $1.9 million. In April, SPJST awarded 60 - $1,000 scholarships to its deserving young members. Ten additional scholarships were presented at SPJST’s State Youth Achievement Day on August 3. The Fraternal Department must receive the completed application and all requested information by February 3, 2020. Recipients are announced in April. The following scholarships are available through the program:
General and Technical Scholarships – For all SPJST members; and Leadership Grants – For active SPJST youth club members Active youth club members are strongly encouraged to apply for the General Scholarship (or Technical Scholarship if attending a technical school) and the Leadership Grant. To be eligible for an SPJST Scholarship or SPJST Leadership Grant, applicants must: • Have an active SPJST insurance certificate in force for at least one year as of February 1; if the membership is in the form of an annuity, the amount must be at least $10,000 • Be a full-time student • Hold an active SPJST insurance certificate and/or annuity for the duration of the scholarship
Thanks for Giving to the SPJST Scholarship Fund! SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson President Nancy Kelly, left, and Lodge 180 Treasurer Rhonda Hurtik present SPJST Vice President Hiram Dixon with a $1,000 check for the SPJST Scholarship Fund during the Lodge 180 Christmas Party on Saturday, December 14, 2019. Donations to the SPJST Scholarship Fund are accepted year-round, are always appreciated, and are 100 percent tax-deductible. Established in 1983, SPJST’s Scholarship Program is funded by the Society through an annual allocation of the SPJST Convention and through the generous support of SPJST members and friends. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships that are awarded. Since its inception, approximately 2,400 scholarships have been awarded totaling more than $1.9 million.
• Be a high school graduate or equivalent • Attend an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or technical college — as designated by one of the six regional accrediting bodies in the United States. Generally stated, a school is considered “accredited” if a student can transfer credits from it to another school. Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been members of SPJST for one year or more may submit a request for the scholarships; likewise, recipients must hold
an active SPJST insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship. Students Encouraged to Apply Early Applications for SPJST Scholarships and Leadership Grants are sent out from September through January upon request. To obtain an SPJST General Scholarship Application and/or Leadership Grant application, please contact my assistant, Sandra Dubcak, at 800-727-7578, ext. 127, and she will be happy to send you an application. —SPJST—

This award is to recognize individuals or couples who have made a significant impact in their lodge’s success and growth over a lengthy period of time. Those individuals or couples should be of a mature age. In the past couple of years, the Home Office has received nomination applications for many young members that still have many years of service to the lodge and its members. Think about it . . . if a young or middle-aged members receive this award, is this telling them that they have achieved their significant impact to their lodge and here on out, they are finished contributing to their lodge and its members? A Lifetime Achiever Award form is available at spjst.org. Please complete and return the form to SPJST Fraternal Department. Outgoing Officers With the election of new officers, do not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your
lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not elected to serve in 2020 and will not seek re-election in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meeting. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Everyone spread the word! October 1 started the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive to benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will run through March 31, 2020. SPJST District Three Director John Engelke greets and presents Czech Ambassador Hynek Kmonicek with an SPJST medallion at a November 20 welcome reception at West Station Roadhouse in West. Ambassador Kmonicek headed the delegation to Texas which included five members of the Czech Parliamentary Defense Committee. The Texas - Czech Republic State Partnership is one of 22 European partnerships that comprise the U.S. European Command State Partnership Pro-
gram and one of the more than 70 worldwide partnerships that constitute the National Guard State Partnership Program. The State Partnership Program has been in place since 1993 with a multitude of military exchanges and familiarization over the course of its existence. In the second photo, Director Engelke presents an SPJST medallion to Chairman of the Committee on Defense Jana Chernochova. Special thanks to SPJST Lodge 54, West member Kathy Podsednik and Mildred Dokupil of West for organizing the reception which included West city officials, business leaders, and fraternalists.
The current officers were re-elected, as there was no competition. I don’t know what will happen if our officers retire. Who will step up? Will our lodge be able to keep going? We have this great hall, and we really need members to take interest in the hall if we are to continue. If we start hiring help, will we have to start paying taxes? Will the dances continue? It is a lot to think about! The dance on Sunday, November 17, 2019, with the Czechaholics was not well attended. I don’t know how long the bands will continue to play for the small groups that are coming to the dances. You know, dancing is a great

Only time will tell. When you read this article, Christmas will probably be over for most of us. All of the shopping, baking, family, and friends getting together and all of the hustle and bustle has settled down. Hopefully, we made time to celebrate the true meaning of this holiday - not just the commercial side of it. We celebrate the most important birthday - the night that Christ was born. That precious

How many of you spent hours on the floor dancing to the Vrazels’ Polka Band over the 55 years that they played for dances all over the state of Texas? What great times we had at their dances, always ending with their famous sing-alongs. Well, here is your chance to take a walk down memory lane at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone (Flag Hall) on Sunday, March 29 featuring the Vrazels’ Tribute Band with dancing from 2 to 6 p.m. Hear some of the songs the Vrazels band played at every dance and short stories about the history of how the band got started. But, dancing and music will be the central part of this celebration. The Tribute Band consists of John Dujka playing Anton’s accordion; Mark Dujka and Michael Trojacek on saxophones; Mike Marek on bass; Jerry Haisler on guitar; and Matthew Strmiska on Thomas’ drum set. They did a concert last October in La Grange, and I could
close my eyes and just see the Vrazels’ Polka Band playing. I fully expect the original Vrazels’ Polka Band members to get on stage and do a few songs for you, too. We hope that many of the past members will also attend and get on stage to play and sing your favorites from the past years. A meet-and-greet is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. so come and visit with my dad Anton and my Uncle Alfred as well as other past band members. Call me at 254-985-2258 to reserve your favorite table and get advance tickets which are $10 per person. Tickets went on sale December 1, and several tables are already reserved so don’t wait too long as I think we will have a lot of people visiting Lodge 24 on March 29! See you there. Linda M. Lodge 187 Round Rock reports on December meeting Hello there! We started the December meeting by sending out well wishes to Joann Oman. We discussed the construction and landscaping repair that the city is going to do. We talked about the tax exemption on the building and property and also had the fire extinguishers inspected. the attack. Eldon also talked about the USS Arizona - that its entire band was lost in the attack, and the fuel continues to leak from USS Arizona’s wreckage. In fact, the oil that often coats the surface of the water surrounding the ship has added an emotional gravity for many who visit the memorial and is sometimes referred to as the “tears of the Arizona,” or “black tears.” Carla Krenek started our gift exchange, and we all agreed to the rules. It was very exciting and fun. I am still hungry for some summer sausage, cheese, and crackers. We ended with a mouth-watering fajita dinner with all the trimmings. It was so delicious! Christmas gifts were handed out by the lodge to all the youth who were present. A big thank you to Carla Krenek for also bringing some gifts to the kiddos. They were all so very excited! Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth Celebrates Christmas Tuesday, December 10, 2019 • National Hall - SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth
They came bearing gifts, hugs, and Christmas sweaters. Almost 40 members and guests of the Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth were ready for the fun and games that were to come. There was the Pledge of Allegiance and a brief meeting. Then . . . the craziness began. Mary Ann Krivanek read a new gift exchange story while passing presents, and the last I heard, she had to start over a couple of times due to some of us getting lost in the madness. It was so wild!
Jon Durham catered a delicious traditional meal of turkey, ham, and trimmings for our festivities. And, there was an abundance of food left over: enough for us to take home for another meal or to share with someone who couldn’t be with us. All in all, we had a blast and a wonderful time just being together for another day. Kudos to President Cathy for her determination to keep making this Circle special. She always goes way above and beyond of what is required of her, and we
appreciate her immensely. We are so lucky to have her guiding us. Thank you so much, Cathy! So as we end this year, we give thanks to God that we made it, and from each of us, we send wishes of joy, hope, peace, and good health to all in 2020. See you next year. We had nine door prizes, and thanks go to all the donors of these gifts. It is always fun to get unexpected presents. Vice President Betty also filled a pint jar with small marshmallows, and we had to guess how many were in the jar. I guessed 200, and the correct amount was 217 - I was the closest number. I received a cute reindeer ornament. Thanks, Betty; that was fun! Margaret Sears and Marilyn Llewellyn were the winners of the 50/50 dollar games. It was just a fun day. We then played a “O Christmas Tree!” game, which the questions were hard. Not many of us had many answers, but we did have a winner. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to seven members - Marilyn Llewellyn, Debbie Skrasek, Lola Taylor, Lupe Esparza, Carolyn Irby, Christine Strieff, Helen Skrasek, and guest Jeannette Lee. May you all have many more. Christmas cards were signed for all our homebound members. The Friendship Club sends all of you best wishes for a happy holiday. Instead of members exchanging gifts, we voted in November to bring a Walmart gift card to give to St. Vincent de Paul for its use. The total amount in collected cards will be reported later.

Last Last Ma Man n on the Moon: Remembe bering ring Astr Astrona onaut ut Eugene Eug ne C Cerna rnan On December 14, 1972, Eugene Cernan was standing on the surface of the Moon. As captain of NASA’s Apollo 17 mission, he had spent three days collecting rocks, driving the lunar rover, and conducting experiments. Now it was time to go home. Cernan drew his daughter’s initials in the dust, looked around him, and saw the Earth in the distance. Then he spoke. “As I take these last steps from the surface . . . I’d just like to record that America’s challenge of today has forged man’s destiny of tomorrow. We leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return: with peace and hope for all mankind.”
Eugene Cernan travelled to space three times: he performed a space walk in 1966; a ‘final rehearsal’ for the Moon landing in 1969; and led Apollo 17 in 1972 when he brought a Czechoslovak flag with him on the journey in honor of his family’s roots. ‘Gene’ Cernan died in Houston on January 16, 2017, surrounded by his family. Cernan loved giving talks to young children and inspiring them to follow in his footsteps. “Always shoot for the moon,” he’d tell the kids. “Even if you miss, you wind up among the stars.” But while China, Japan and the European Space Agency (ESA) have planned missions to the Moon, these will not take place until at least 2024. Visiting the Moon was a profound experience for Cernan because it gave him an outsider’s perspective of the Earth. The planet ‘was alive, it was moving, with purpose and beauty through space and time.’
Then joining his colleague in the lander, he said that it was time to go and blasted off. No one has returned since.

CESAT sets Feb. 8 annual membership meeting The Czech Ex-students Association of Texas (CESAT) will have its annual membership meeting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2020, at Blinn College in Schulenburg. Members can attend online or in person. The meeting will discuss the expanding of dual credit Czech classes in high schools of Texas. The Czech Ex-students Association of Texas, with the Czech name of Spolek bývalých českých studentů státu Texasu, had its beginning in 1909 at the University of Texas, where several students of Czech heritage formed the Čechie Club to study, perpetuate, and promote the Czech language and culture in the southern United States ČESAT, together with its sub-organization Texaská Matice vyššího vzdělání (The Texas Council of Higher Education), now as in the past, continues in the tradition of the Čechie Club to perpetuate and promote the Czech language and Czech culture. ČESAT’s financial mission has evolved away from an earlier mode of providing educational loans to Texas Czech college and university students. The organization now continues to offer support through scholarships to individual student members of ČESAT. This is done through investments, donations, and annual memberships. The most important goal of ČESAT is the preservation of the Czech language in Texas through the expansion of Czech language classes in Texas. Contrary to the belief that ČESAT is an organization for college ex-students of Czech descent only, this association accepts the membership of any person interested in Czech heritage and preservation of the Czech language in Texas.
