Editor’s Note

Deadline is January 30 to submit Vestnik Valentines!

The new 2020 year has begun! I hope you and your loved ones enjoyed a blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Best wishes for a healthy, successful year. Now it’s time to send your special someone a valentine in the Věstník! Our special Valentine Věstník will be published in early February. But, valentine greetings are due by 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 30. Don’t delay, submit today at www.spjst.org. See the back page of this week’s Věstník for more information. We look forward to receiving your valentines! Where’s My Calendar? The 2020 SPJST Calendars were scheduled to be mailed the week of December 23 to those who requested them and those who receive the mailed version of the Věstník each week. However, the post office rejected the calendars because they needed to be mailed in envelopes. (Previously, they were not mailed in envelopes.) Imprinted envelopes were ordered, and the calendars were then stuffed and mailed the week of January 6. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we hope that you have received or will be receiving your calendar soon. A big thanks to our friends at Temple Daily Telegram for all of their assistance with the calendar mailing. We are grateful for their help and support. SPJST Scholarship/ Leadership Grant Deadline The Fraternal Department must receive the completed SPJST Scholar-

ship and/or Leadership Grant application and all requested information by Monday, February 3, 2020. Applications can be downloaded at www.spjst.org. More information about the scholarships and leadership grants appears on page 30 of this week’s Věstník. Still to Come! Stay tuned for scenes from the Czech Heritage Museum’s Christmas Open House; Home Office Christmas project to assist families in need; and the annual listing of longtime members.

Christmas ornaments bring back memories Melanie, I loved the cover of the December 23, 2019, Věstník with all the pretty ornaments . . . especially two of them! For more than 25 years, I had a business called Natures Woodrounds. I painted on slices of east Texas Sweetgum that we processed ourselves from our place near Palestine. So seeing those brought back memories. I started in about 1973 so this was before the internet. I am sending a picture of the color sheet I sent with every order and handed out at trade shows.

VĚSTNÍK you’re in the market to buy clothing, home furnishings, cell phones, personal computers, jewelry, sports and fitness equipment, travel and vacation packages, or even services like auto insurance, PerkSpot can save you time, money, and energy. It’s your one-stop-shop for discounts, deals, and savings. Here’s what you need to do to put SPJST PerkSpot to work for you:

Take Advantage of the Member Benefits Waiting for You Online by Brian Vanicek SPJST President “Today is the oldest you’ve ever been, and the youngest you’ll ever be again.” — Eleanor Roosevelt That quote certainly generates food for thought! I just turned 60, and it makes me even more conscious of time and its precious value. My predecessor, Honorary SPJST President Howard Leshikar, had a saying about “time.” It went something like this, “You can repay someone for their expenses, but you can’t ever give back the time that they devote to a project. The best that you can do is offer them a sincere ‘thank you’ for their commitment.” That’s so true and with that thought in mind — and on behalf of the Supreme Lodge — thank you to SPJST members everywhere for your devoted membership in our fraternal order. Special thanks to those of you who give your time and of yourself to your lodge, working to make a positive difference in your lodge and for your community. Best wishes to you for a Happy and Prosperous New Year! For Your Consideration . . . If saving money is one of your New Year’s resolutions for 2020, you’ll be interested in learning more about SPJST’s

truly “unsung” member benefits. These are the perks that members can take advantage of simply for having an SPJST life insurance certificate. All of them are web-based — accessible by the Internet — and through the SPJST website; however, you’ve got to know about them before you can take advantage of them. The first is a program called “SPJST PerkSpot” that we’ve had in place for several years now. Based on the “traffic report” that we receive from our PerkSpot service providers, only 250 SPJST members took advantage of this benefit last year.

PerkSpot is a personal online savings resource for all members – a place to find discounts and rebates on goods and services from many of the best known brand names in the United States – online and off, nationally and locally. And they’re up to date, too – PerkSpot updates the discounts and deals daily. Through partnerships with thousands of popular retailers and service providers, PerkSpot is able to obtain discounts for almost anything you can buy. Whether

Register. From your home computer, go to the spjst.org PerkSpot site — beneath the “Programs” and “Member Benefits” menu heading; click on the spjst.perkspot.com link and complete the very simple sign-in instructions for the registration process. Once you have logged in to PerkSpot, you can browse discounts from 26 different categories. Shop. Check out the deals each vendor offers. The site and deals change daily, too - so keep checking! You may click on a vendor’s icon on the PerkSpot homepage, search in the search bar, or browse the many categories. Follow the instructions provided for each deal – this is the info that you’ll need to close the deal. In some cases, you may need to print a coupon. Some discounts are available only online. You’ve just got to login to have access to it all! It gets better. In addition to SPJST PerkSpot, in 2019, the SPJST Supreme Lodge launched three new web-based fraternal benefit options for SPJST members. It’s an exciting set of offerings that will extend benefits in three key areas including: Freshbenies - A practical web-based program to controlE healthcare costs. It’s a membership program that can save you and/or your family money on your healthcareU costs;

Travel Insurance - A web-based program for travel insurance for travelers of all ages and occupations. Joan and I took advantage of this service during our vacation trip last summer. There’s great peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be provided for in the event of an untimely travel accident; and

Amazon Smile - This one is so easy to use, and it’s great to see that some SPJST members have been taking advantage of it. This is a website that is operated by Amazon with the same products, prices, and shipping features as Amazon.com. The big difference is that for every purchase that you make on the smile.amazon.com website, .05 percent of the purchase price is directed to the SPJST Foundation. That doesn’t sound like much but it can add up! The final three programs which I profiled are two-fold wonderful in that they bring with them the potential to provide SPJST members with services that SPJST could not have provided alone. Additionally, the revenue stream generated by these affiliations could eventually go a long way towards supporting the growth and continued success of SPJST’s fraternal program. Thanking you in advance for visiting the SPJST PerkSpot link as well as the associated links for Freshbenies, TravelInsurance.com, and smile.amazon.com in 2020. —SPJST— DO YOU SHOP AT AMAZON.COM? Jesse Pospisil Announces Candidacy for District Two Director

Dear District Two Members, It has been a great honor to serve as your director and representative on the SPJST Supreme Lodge. I hereby announce my candidacy for reelection to this very important position. I am sincerely seeking your support and vote at the upcoming 33rd SPJST Convention to be held June 14 through 16, 2020, in Killeen, Texas. The past eight years were filled with financial charts, insurance statistics, and various reports. As a member of the board of directors, I am amazed at the details that each officer’s report contains. I have been involved in several property loan evaluations and have cochaired the Supreme Lodge Internal Audit Committee. I am honored to have been a part of the Supreme Lodge of this great organization. SPJST will be 123 years old this year, and I believe it is in a better financial situation than in 2012 when I was elected at the 31st Convention. I know it is due to the commitment and diligence of its officers and directors. This convention, as all conventions in the past, will include very important decisions that must be studied prior to the vote. Please know that I am available to help you understand the proposed changes so you can be an informed delegate. I am a 51-year member of SPJST Lodge Praha No. 29, Taylor. I have served as vice president in the 1970s, convention delegate since 2004, and property committee member for 16 years (committee chairman for the past 14 years). I was elected to the SPJST Li-

brary, Archives, and Museum, now called the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, in 2006, and I have served as its treasurer for 13 years. After 34 years of service, I retired from the Texas Department of Transportation. I also retired as a master sergeant from the United States Army Reserve in 1996 after more than 28 years of service. My wife, Linda, of almost 53 years, and I have traveled throughout the district and the state of Texas to many functions during my tenure as District Two Director. We have acquired many new friends and have truly enjoyed all the lodge meetings, youth club activities, picnics, socials, fundraisers, Corpus Christi Getaways, etc. that we have attended. I have presented numerous college scholarships to SPJST high school graduates. I highly support the youth, youth leaders, and youth clubs in District Two and throughout the state. This program is our future and a very important part of SPJST. Seeing the talent and leadership skills displayed at Youth Achievement Days (YADs) impresses me and inspires me to be a better role model. I have been busy as your District Two Director, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything! I feel that these activities are a vital part of my duties as director. Again, I ask for your vote and support. Fraternally yours, Jesse Pospisil Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—

District Seven Director Bob Bayer Announces Retirement

I, Robert J. “Bob” Bayer, am announcing my retirement as of June 30, 2020. The 2020 Convention will be my last official duty as District Seven Director. I have served SPJST and District Seven for 32-plus years, and as substitute director for 12 years. In 2004, I ran for SPJST President. I served as Supreme Lodge Chairman from 2000 to 2004. I learned a lot about SPJST during this time. I have attended 12 conventions as a delegate. The 2020 Convention will be my 13th convention. This has been a fabulous venture for me. I never dreamed this would lead to a rewarding career. But it is time I step down. I want to start enjoying my family and my three great-grandsons more because I am not getting any younger. I am now 80 years young. My best friend/wife and I will be married for 60 years on October 29, 2020. What a blissful 60 years it’s been! I got involved in SPJST and my Czech background in 1960 when I married a Czech girl from Floresville. Her name was Polly Jane Pavliska. I had to ask her father Joe Pavliska if I could marry his daughter. The only thing he asked was if I could play dominoes. The rest is history! We started attending meetings at Lodge 107, Floresville. Shortly after that, I was elected president of Lodge 107 where I served for 31 years. I currently serve as lodge fraternal activities coordinator (FAC), which I have held for a few years now. I also served as District Seven President. What more could a guy from Hondo, Texas - raised in Castroville - ask for or hope for? I had no idea about my Czech

background, being raised in a German community. I have to thank my wife for getting me involved. I would love to do this all over again if only I were 40 to 50 years younger. I wish to thank all SPJST members for supporting and working with me. I have served with three SPJST Presidents - Nick A. Morris, Howard Leshikar, and Brian Vanicek; with five vice presidents - Joe B. Hejny, Bernard Gebala, Clifton Coufal, Gene McBride, and Hiram Dixon; with two financial officers - Lanita Anglin and Leonard Mikeska; with two accounting officers - Jerry Mikulas, Jr. and Roy Vajdak; with three legal advisors - Reuben Lesikar, Sidney Kacir, and Drew Popelka; and with 21 directors - John Kubena, Henry Vitek, Sid Pokladnik, Stanley Broz, Matt Vanek, Louis Hanus, Frank Klinkovsky, Johnnie Krizan, Andrew Vavra, Willie Kohutek, Jerry Prochaska, Billy Rollwitz, Michael Ahlstrom, Larry W. Pflughaupt, Bobby Wuensche, Donnie Victorick, Jesse Pospisil, John Engelke, Karen Kaspar, Bobby Davis, and Bradly Stavinoha. I have made some decisions that I believe were in the best interest of SPJST. There were some decisions that some members of District Seven did not like or agree with. In the long run, it was the right decisions. District Seven is no longer the toil. District Seven is now in the mix. Thanks to all of you who helped District Seven to move in the right direction. Polly and I have made many new friends in District Seven and across the state of Texas. Please come to the convention with open and clear minds. Let’s make the right decisions. I will always remember my SPJST family. Thank you for your support during my tenure as director. Spanem bohem. What’s next? Look out, future, we’re coming. Thank you forever. God bless all of you. Fraternally, Bob Bayer, FIC 4188 FM 1303 Floresville, Texas 78114 830-391-3375 —SPJST—

It’s important to remember where we came from

It’s important to remember where SPJST — as a Society — came from. The Velehrad Lodge Hall, pictured above, now located at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, is a reminder: SPJST grew and was respected because of the relationships and trust that it fostered . . . As stated in the Preamble to our SPJST By-Laws, “The main idea and purpose of this Society, as organized by fearless and peace-loving Czech pioneers in Texas, was and is: To provide and promote fraternal and social fellowship among its members. To endeavor to keep alive the cherished traditions, customs, heritage, culture, and language of our forefathers. And generally, through moral, spiritual, and economic respect, to encourage benevolence and humanity through the Society with sound practical life insurance for its members.” To this day, SPJST lodges are the life and foundation of our Society in the communities that we serve. Lodges bring people together, establishing a common bond among men, women, boys, and girls of many backgrounds. Lodges help to keep members informed of the life insurance programs and the array of fraternal benefits afforded through membership in SPJST. It is through service to others and fraternal programming that lodges help SPJST convey a sense of purpose and tradition. Thank you to all of our SPJST members and friends who are working through their lodges to make a positive difference in their communities. Best wishes to you all for a happy and prosperous 2020! —Brian Vanicek, SPJST President • Photo by Mark Hermes, TCHCC

Lodge 180, Burleson donates more than $18,000 to deserving organizations First of all, let me say what a fantastic Christmas party we had this year! It was super with a record number of attendees, great food, and wonderful fellowship! Our Christmas party was held at El Fenix Restaurant in Burleson, Texas, on Saturday, December 14, 2019. We had approximately 45 guests in attendance. I have a feeling that this count is a little low as some of the guests did not reg-

We were pleased and honored to have the opportunity to make contributions to various organizations - some for the first time. This year, we were able to contribute a greater amount than we have in the past. What a humbling experience to be part of group that so willing gives of its funds to others for the betterment of humanity. As an individual, I feel a special privilege to be part of this organization and grateful to know my fellow lodge members. Each table at El Fenix was dressed with Christmas decorations, queso, hot sauce, chips, and guacamole for everyone to munch on while donations were being presented. A slideshow of photos from Henry and Sandra Mayo’s tour of the Czech Republic was shown while members and guests enjoyed the buffet meal. Desserts were provided by the members. District One Director Donnie Victorick installed the officers for 2020, which included

new Secretary-Treasurer John Skrabanek. Everyone took home a door prize, several which were souvenirs from the Czech Republic. Thank you, Ann, it was delicious as were all the other dishes our members brought. We have lots of good cooks, and everything is always so good. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order for her last time. She has been president for seven years - and a good one, I must say. She asked to resign from that position, but she will now be our vice president. Liz Krajca will be the new president. Delores Vrana has been treasurer, and now will be secretary. New treasurer will be Anita Kubin. Thank you all for serving in these positions. Quilt winner was Mary Nell Sladecek. I am happy for her as she is one of our best quilters. We had several other prizes. Winners were Nina, Lil, Victoria, Irene, Lillie Macalik, and Georgie Morales. Can you believe I was the 50-50 winner so I paid my dues for 2020! You all know, they will be due in January. We all sang “Happy Birthday” for Irene and Pat, and we also sang “Silent Night.” I must say, we sounded pretty good. In January, we will quilt for Dolores Vrana; and in February, for Maggie Holy. So members, please come so we

Senior Living proudly introduced the Senior Crimestoppers program to residents and staff at the skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility in Taylor, Texas, on Monday, December 9, 2019. The program is sponsored by Round Top State Bank. Senior Crimestoppers Field Representative Michael C. Its 24/7 toll-free Tip Line for anonymous crime/incident reporting offers rewards up to $1,000. Mr. Ozga also talked about the “Wishes Come True” program that grants a lifelong or current wish for one or more residents. The “Time of Your Life” program will provide S.P.J.S.T. Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation with an enjoyable event for residents, staff, family members, and other invited guests. Senior Crimestoppers at S.P.J.S.T. District Two youth visit Main Event Center for fall activity Dear Věstník Readers and Members, The District Two fall activity was held in Austin at Main Event Center. It was four hours of great fun - bowling, laser tag, glow-in-the-dark putt-putt, arcade games, a prize room, and so much more. Forty-four youth members, six friends, and 25 parents had a fabulous time. We hope to repeat this social again in the near future. I was so proud and pleased to have five of the eight youth clubs in District Two joining in on the fun. Thank you for being a part of this day: Lodge 20, Granger; Lodge 24, Cyclone; Lodge 47, Seaton; Lodge 182, Falls County; and Lodge 187, Round Rock. Save the Date—February 16 District Two Youth Development Workshop and Skating Party Please mark your calendars for the annual District Two Youth Development Workshop and Skating Party on Sunday, February 16. Watch the Věstník for updates and times. This is the biggest district activity, and I know for a fact, the longest tradition of having the skating party take place. I remember as a youth member, it was one of everyone’s favorites, and it still seems to be. Our beloved past DYC Frank Klinkovsky, better known as “Colonel Klink,”

Monday, January 13, 2020 loved planning this activity and giving each youth a $1 bill as they left. Frankie, you will always be loved and never forgotten for all the good times your provided for the youth. Not sure about any of you, but I truly believe Six Flags Over Texas is missing us. What do all of you members think? Let me know! I think it is time we get the buses rolling and head to Arlington. Youth leaders, please check with your parents/youth and get back with me about a good month to go. Ordering the tickets in March (The Early Bird Special) does save a lot of money. Let me have your feedback as soon as possible. The only time I recommend not to go is Halloween weekend. I want to wish each of you a happy new year! I hope you enjoyed the time away from school or work, but mostly, I hope you enjoyed the time with your family and friends! Hugs to all of you! Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Good Grief News Dreaming Your Loved one is alive By Sabrina N. Young, CFSP

On Saturday, December 14, 2019, several Lodge 202, Jourdanton youth members assisted with Wreaths Across America. Dreaming your loved one is alive: Is this normal? Questions about dreams and death are frequently asked. A woman said she dreams a lot about her parent coming back in her dream, and she feels she has to remind them that they have passed away. This woman was a caregiver and was always with her mom in her daily routine. Therefore, now she sees her mom regularly in her dreams. It is very common that when your daily routine consisted of care-taking for someone that you feel an absence, and your mind/body tries to adjust without them. Your mind begins to dream to help make up the difference in your awaken life. You might be replaying a day over and over again or a particular incident that was an important image to you. If you feel it is tiring or hurtful, there are a few things you can do to try and alleviate the dream. Think about it during your waking day. If you are able to, go and sit in the area until you feel relief from the situation as this could be helpful. To ease your dream and your mind from the event, sometimes you have to replay it giving yourself permission to relieve yourself from the dream. Many people are opposite from this and wait patiently for the loved one to come to them - letting them know they have crossed over, letting them know they have made it to the other side peacefully. Many people look for signs in a dream and google dream dictionary to look up meanings to try and hold onto the deceased. This is okay, too. We are all hopeful and imagine there is more. If you want to see them in your dreams, it’s reversal of the above paragraph. In your waken daily routine, make screensavers of the deceased one’s images, have a personal altar with memorial photos, or talk about them frequently. A lot of times your mind will search, and you will have dreams of them. Whatever your desired outcome is, know that there is a correlation with how present they are in your waken life. If you would like some helpful resources, you can contact me by sending an email with the subject “dreams” to youngsdaughtersfuneralhome@gmail.com. —SPJST —

Visitation was held at 8:30 a.m. until service time at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 12 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with burial following. Jimmie attended the first two grades in Orchard; the next six years at Bernard Prairie Jimmie Losack School and graduated from East Bernard High School in 1953. Jimmie excelled in all sports throughout his high school career and qualified for state two years in a row in high jump. Following high school, he entered and served his country in the United States Army. On May 31, 1958, he married Georgie Kanak in East Bernard. They have two sons, Duane and Gregory. Jimmie was a faithful member of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard; Holy Cross Church in East Bernard; Parish Council; and Knights of Columbus Council 2500. He was active in East Bernard Booster Club and was recognized for his role in the Little League organization in its early years. Jimmie’s working career included Gulf States Tubing, National Furniture, Schindler Steel Leedo Cabinetry, and United States Postal Service. Each job change always involved upgrading his managerial positions. Jimmie enjoyed locating and investing in small properties in Harwin, Hungerford, and Sublime. His pride and joy was his ranch

house which was built in Sublime. There he began raising a few cattle as his hobby. He loved the ranch and having big family barbecue blowouts. It was at the ranch that Duane and Greg killed their first deer. Nothing, however, gave him greater joy than attending and supporting his sons’ activities no matter where they were held. Having both sons on the 1977 East Bernard State Football Championship team was the highlight of his life. Jimmie and Georgie continued these trips to their grandchildren’s scholastic and sporting activities, along with attending piano and dance recitals. They continued creating many memories along the way taking trips across the United States for summer vacations. These summers were always devoted to taking trips to various states first with their two sons and later taking the same trips with their grandchildren. Jimmie had always been a hardworking man until his body began to fail him. His sons and grandsons made his last years happy ones - taking him to deer camp, allowing him to be a big part of their lives and taking him wherever he wanted to go. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and two sisters; Johnnie and his wife Evelyn Losack, Louis and his wife Daisy Losack, Charles Losack, Catherine and her husband Jack Philips, Leona and her husband Larry Jackson, Joe, Thomas, and Donald Losack; and two infants, son Matthew James and daughter Valerie. Jimmie is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Georgie Kanak Losack; sons Duane Losack and wife Melinda and Greg Losack and wife Joyce; grandchildren Justin Losack, Brooke Losack, and Garrett Losack and girlfriend Lindsay Weakley; step-grandchildren Jenise Moszkowicz and husband Daniel, Tara Sliva and husband Dustin, Megan Krusleski, and Connor Krusleski; and stepgreat-grandchildren Kale and Kalan Moszkowicz. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Tributes and words of condolence may be left for the family at www.davisgreenlawnfh.com. May he rest in peace. Respectfully, Helen Kelner Secretary —SPJST—

The program is open to the public and will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. Doors will open at 8 a.m. for sign in, walk-in registration, and refreshments. Program sessions will include: 1) “Texas Czechs Bring the Music” by Theresa Parker, publisher of The Texas Polka News, and Editor Gary E. McKee. He attended first grade in the Czechoslovakia days after the 1968 Soviet occupation and came to America via a refugee camp. Patrick has conducted extensive parish register research in the Czech Republic, visited more than 100 courthouses and libraries in 26 states, and lectured at more than two dozen genealogical conferences and meetings. 6) We will also have our annual meeting and election of officers. In addition to these presentations, there will be a sales table laden with authentic Czech items. We will also offer books published by TCGS, including our newest publication, Pamatnik Czechoslovaku, a memorial book honoring the Czechs of Texas for the work they carried out in the years 1914 to 1920 to benefit the liberation of the Czech lands in World War I. Of special interest is the Walter and Mary Bennett collection, chronicling their life as they traveled from Kentucky, becoming one of the first families to settle in West. The Grossman collection contains many early farm artifacts including the

family’s original covered wagon. Other objects include cameras, printing press, Czech costumes, military uniforms, photos and paintings and murals by local artists. The History of West Museum is located at 112 East Oak Street in West, Texas. It is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment. Admission is free of charge. Take a Walk Down Memory Lane with Vrazels’ Tribute Band at Lodge 24, Cyclone How many of you spent hours on the floor dancing to the Vrazels’ Polka Band over the 55 years that they played for dances all over the state of Texas? What great times we had at their dances, always ending with their famous sing-alongs. Save the Date: Sunday, March 29 Well, here is your chance to take a walk down memory lane at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone (Flag Hall) on Sunday, March 29, 2020, featuring the Vrazels’ Tribute Band with dancing from 2 to 6 p.m. Hear some of the songs the Vrazels band played at every dance and

Monday, January 13, 2020 short stories about the history of how the band got started. But, dancing and music will be the central part of this celebration. The Tribute Band consists of John Dujka playing Anton’s accordion; Mark Dujka and Michael Trojacek on saxophones; Mike Marek on bass; Jerry Haisler on guitar; and Matthew Strmiska on Thomas’ drum set. They did a concert last October in La Grange, and I could close my eyes and just see the Vrazels’ Polka Band playing. I fully expect the original Vrazels’ Polka Band members to get on stage and do a few songs for you, too. We hope that many of the past members will also attend and get on stage to play and sing your favorites from the past years. Meet-and-Greet A meet-and-greet is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. so come and visit with my dad Anton and my Uncle Alfred as well as

37

other past band members. Call me at 254-985-2258 to reserve your favorite table and get advance tickets which are $10 per person. Tickets went on sale December 1, and several tables are already reserved so

don’t wait too long as I think we will have a lot of people visiting Lodge 24 on March 29! See you there. Linda M. (Vrazel) Wilde Treasurer —SPJST—
