Lodge 48, Beyersville begins to rebuild

SPJST Supreme Lodge met on January 21 and 22 at the Home Office in Temple for the quarterly meeting and to initiate Vision 2020, a three-year plan to improve and effectively integrate SPJST Home Office operations, utilizing technology, performance metrics, optimized processes, and strategic partnerships with the goal being to operate the Society in a way which is both productive and cost effective.

SPJST Recognizes Longtime Members on pages 9 to 13 SPJST extends its thanks and appreciation to the many members who are achieving membership landmarks in 2020. This Vestnik issue lists SPJST members achieving 50- and 75-years of membership in SPJST and Age 96 and Age 100 members. Congratulations to these honorees! Members who achieve “The Grand Age of 96” receive special recognition in

SPJST. At this special age, members are considered to have “outlived” the terms of their insurance certificate and are allowed to collect its proceeds. They remain members of SPJST with all the privileges and benefits of active members, but are not required to pay any dues or assessments. The 2020 honorees are listed on pages 9 to 13 of this week’s Vestnik. —SPJST—

After a fire destroyed Lodge 48, Beyersville on July 16, 2019, lodge members have begun the rebuilding process. Best wishes to the lodge. —Photo by Alice Bracewell, Secretary Six months after an accidental fire damaged SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville hall on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, lodge members are taking steps to rebuild. Lodge 48 Property Committee Chairman Larry Beran says that bids have been submitted and presented to the members. “The pad has been built, and the plumber has come to do the rough-in on the plumbing,” he stated. “After the trenching, beams, and steel prep on the slab, we will be ready to pour the concrete. But it all depends on the weather . . . it should be around the first of February or so.” He explained the builder will then erect the metal, which Brother Larry anticipates should be completed around the first of March. The interior work - electric, air conditioning, lighting, and floor - will then begin. Lodge 48 was chartered in 1903. The hall was built in 1929 using lumber from

a church. In the early 1960s, the building underwent renovations, adding indoor bathrooms, storage room, kitchen area, bar, and space for tables. The lodge underwent renovations again in 2003 and the restorations were completed in 2006. The hall - which has touched many generations of people - is an important element in the community and has hosted many weddings, holiday celebrations, family reunions, and SPJST local lodge events and district meetings. Best wishes to Lodge 48 as they begin the rebuilding process. If you would like to contribute to the lodge’s rebuilding fund, please mail a donation check to SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville in care of Bonnie Urbanek, Treasurer, at 6401 FM 1466 in Coupland, Texas 78615. Editor’s Note

Your good deeds no matter how big or small can change the world

Oftentimes, I think about all the great things we do in SPJST and what a difference it makes in our communities. It doesn’t matter how big or how small the deed or project is, it always makes a difference. I came across this story, and it certainly gives me motivation to continue to work in my lodge and community. “Every Sunday morning I take a light jog around a park near my home. There’s a lake located in one corner of the park. Each time I jog by this lake, I see the same elderly woman sitting at the water’s edge with a small metal cage sitting beside her. This past Sunday my curiosity got the best of me, so I stopped jogging and walked over to her. As I got closer, I realized that the metal cage was in fact a small trap. There were three turtles, unharmed, slowly walking around the base of the trap. She had a fourth turtle in her lap that she was carefully scrubbing with a spongy brush. ‘Hello,’ I said. ‘I see you here every Sunday morning. If you don’t mind my nosiness, I’d love to know what you’re doing with these turtles.’ She smiled. ‘I’m cleaning off their shells,’ she replied. ‘Anything on a turtle’s shell, like algae or scum, reduces the turtle’s ability to absorb heat and impedes its ability to swim. It can also corrode and weaken the shell over time.’ ‘Wow! That’s really nice of you!’ I exclaimed. She went on: ‘I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake and helping these little guys out. It’s my own strange way of

making a difference.’ ‘But don’t most freshwater turtles live their whole lives with algae and scum hanging from their shells?’ I asked. ‘Yep, sadly, they do,’ she replied. I scratched my head. ‘Well then, don’t you think your time could be better spent? I mean, I think your efforts are kind and all, but there are fresh water turtles living in lakes all around the world. And 99 percent of these turtles don’t have kind people like you to help them clean off their shells. So, no offense . . . but how exactly are your localized efforts here truly making a difference?’ The woman giggled aloud. She then looked down at the turtle in her lap, scrubbed off the last piece of algae from its shell, and said, ‘Sweetie, if this little guy could talk, he’d tell you I just made all the difference in the world.’” —Author Unknown

Valued Members of SPJST: I would like to introduce myself. My name is Delisle Doherty, and I am currently the Regional General Agent (RGA) for District Five. This district has been one of the most consistent districts over the last eight years. I have been a member of SPJST since 2005. I am married and have two children and five grandchildren, all members of SPJST. I am officially announcing my candidacy for the Supreme Lodge Vice President position. Prior to owning my own businesses, I joined American General in 1991 and earned myself a position on the President’s Club, as one of the top life agents in the company. I have successfully owned my own businesses since 1993. I had a technology business that excelled at the start of the cellular revolution. I owned four wireless locations. In 2003, I focused on my printing and marketing company, which included business consulting. Over the last 26 years, I have consulted with multiple small to medium businesses to form marketing strategies and implemented them. I also trained employees in salesmanship and networking. I am certified with the state to write continuing education classes and conduct them. This allows me to train agents and keep them compliant with their license. I currently have more than 50 hours of classes registered with the state. As a speaker, I have spoken to groups from 10 to 300 people at a time on “The 6 Keys to Successful Networking,” “Hidden Value of Networking,” and

“Smart Marketing.” More than 20 groups a year request my speaking. Since 2009, I have owned Christian Business Fellowship Association (see www.thecbfa.com). It’s a business network for Christian businesses to help them grow using their faith-based foundation. I have expanded it into a community organization, that not only helps businesses, but also individuals and charities. Over the last 10 years, we have helped charities raise more than $536,000. I currently have five chapters. I helped run a children’s program for my church for 17 years and attended 11 mission trips with the youth over that same period. I am active with several local charities. As Vice President, I will bring experience in the five main areas necessary to help SPJST to grow. • Operations - My 26 years as a business owner gives me the experience to help manage the day-to-day operations of this organization. I will be able to control costs and increase our bottom line. I will work with the lodges and the Fraternal Department to increase membership by becoming community partners with each market. • Marketing - As the owner of a marketing company and a consultant, I can implement marketing strategies that will help get the SPJST name out to the public. I can update our materials to reflect the interest and attractiveness of the fraternal aspect of our organization. I will work closely with the Fraternal Department to help grow our programs through membership drives and creating community centers for our lodges. I will update our products to become more competitive. • Training - My training and public speaking experience will help us to bring in a more professional insurance sales team. Since I am certified with TDI to write and conduct classes I will keep our agents compliant with the state. We can change the culture to expect agents to be active with the lodges as part of their job, understanding the fraternal aspects, as Texans celebrating the Czech heritage. As a strong advocate to youth, I can help re-establish youth programs by training the agents to emphasize the

VĚSTNÍK importance of active youth when they sell the insurance. • Technology - My technology background and knowledge will allow us to continue to upgrade our software and communications to allow easier access to information necessary to grow SPJST and the lodges. This will increase our efficiency and response time, while cutting costs. • Fraternalism - With my experience working with the community and running youth programs, I will work closely with the Fraternal Department.

Monday, January 27, 2020 This will ultimately allow the smaller lodges to have the opportunity to grow and become active again, thus embracing the community while preserving the Czech heritage. I would love the opportunity to speak to each lodge and answer any questions you may have on my qualifications. Feel free to contact me at 832-232-2049, and I will make arrangements to speak to you. Fraternally yours, Delisle L. Doherty Lodge 196, Houston-West —SPJST—

Donnie Victorick Announces Candidacy for District One Director

Dear District One Members and Delegates, It is amazing how fast time passes as we continue to move forward in the 21st century. Seems that everything moves at a much faster pace, especially when compared to times of the past. Now we are approaching our 33rd SPJST Convention on June 14, 15, and 16. There are many issues which will need to be considered and addressed to meet the challenges faced by fraternals nationwide, which by no means excludes SPJST. Things are changing in the way of doing business, and we must set the tone to preserve our future. There are always new approaches presented constantly indicating we must adapt or cease to exist. With the challenges facing us, I am announcing my candidacy for District One Director. I have had the honor of serving our district since 1998 and feel I have represented the district and SPJST to the best of my ability. I have learned

and am still learning about ways of doing things to make our organization better today than it was yesterday. You can never stop learning because if you do, you are not living. I have been outspoken on many things and have always been open-minded when it comes to making decisions for SPJST. Personal feelings and agendas have never been at the forefront of my decisions and have always chosen the path which I feel is best for our society. Sometimes this has caused negative results for me personally, but doing what is best for our organization has always been my priority. I am qualified to serve as your director. I am a graduate of Texas A&M University holding both bachelor’s and master’s degrees along with superintendent certification. I have attended numerous American Fraternal Alliance conferences and seminars seeking to obtain the best knowledge and practices for our organization to follow. Continuing education is a must for directors and officers to have the knowledge to promote best practices in the fraternal world. My experiences have been rewarding and eye-opening in the way of doing what needs to be done to accomplish success. I have learned what regulators in the insurance industry expect of fraternals to continue future growth and success. Today, it is imperative that officers and directors possess formal educational training in special areas to meet the challenges we face on a regular basis, even daily. They must be able to make difficult decisions which are in the best interest of the organization for its survival without letting personal feelings and ideas get in the way. Board members need to re-

member that we are a business which requires making tough decisions. I meet these qualifications and want to represent you in our district and also SPJST. Over the years, I have enjoyed visiting local lodges and attending various events throughout the state meeting old friends and making new ones in addition to knowing your feelings about the SPJST. We all need your input and suggestions to help us make the appropriate decisions to continue to be successful for another 123 years. We must continue to build on the foundation which our founders and forefathers have done for us. We cannot let them down! We must continue our cherished Czech traditions and culture and promote a wholesome family environment while doing for others. We must also continue to promote and support our youth program because our youth are our future. Presently, we are facing the challenge of excessive expenses and minimum returns on our investments. This decrease in revenue is due to the extremely low interest environment with the result of lower income from years past. This means we must examine all ways of doing business and make significant changes. Expenses must be cut, and some difficult decisions must be made.

5

We have already exhausted some areas but more needs to be done. We have a business to operate and cannot be everything to everyone. We are no longer just a small fraternal, but an organization with $240-plus million in assets and facing a declining membership. We must have qualified leaders to make us profitable by examining everything to ease the strains we are facing. At the same time, we must hold to what makes us who we are and what we stand for. We must look at ways to increase our income and cut expenses without cutting the heart out of SPJST. We must think outside the box and look at new approaches to the way we do things. As your director, I will continue to push for these concepts and make the decisions which are in the best interest of our organization, regardless of personal feelings. I look forward to visiting with you, not only in my district but statewide. I will always welcome your input and look forward to being your voice on the Supreme Lodge and SPJST. You vote of confidence will be greatly appreciated. Fraternally, Donnie Victorick Lodge 9, Snook —SPJST—

Bradley Stavinoha Announces Candidacy for District Five Director

Please accept my candidacy for reelection for District Five Director. I hope I have cemented my position as an asset on the board and Supreme Lodge. I have a history of insurance experience, board experience, and community and lodge service. Through the past four years of serving as an SPJST

Supreme Lodge Director, I have gained vast knowledge in SPJST. There was a much larger learning curve than I realized over the past four years. I have learned to chase solutions to challenges head on and be willing to step into roles that I had not yet grown into. I realize SPJST is at a critical cross road, and I want to be a part of the bus that puts SPJST in the right direction. There are so many issues I would like to pursue a conclusion to. Also because I have so many friends and family with SPJST, I want to make sure SPJST has a bright future. I hope my early contributions have had a very positive impact on SPJST so far. I believe there are workable solutions to the issues facing SPJST. I do understand the demands of serving in this elected position, and I am willing to continue to invest the time and energy in SPJST. Bradley Stavinoha Lodge 81, Needville —SPJST—

Regina House Announces Candidacy for District Seven Director

My name is Regina House, and I would like to be considered as a candidate for District Seven Director. I was born and raised in Pleasanton, Texas, and I still live there with my family. I have been married to James House, a self-employed conservation contractor, for 32 years. We have two daughters - Michelle House, a 2018 graduate of Texas A&M University, and Kelly House, a student at Texas Tech University. Both were very active and involved in the SPJST Youth Program by participating in summer camps, Youth Achievement Days, Leaders-in-Training (LIT), and community service activities. Both Michelle and Kelly represented District Seven as queens, and Kelly also represented SPJST as the 2018-2019 SPJST State Queen. I graduated from Pleasanton High School in 1983, and attended University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) for a year. I then decided to attend the Executive Secretary Program at Durham Business College in San Antonio. Upon completion of the program in 1985, I was hired by the college as the director’s secretary. After working as the director’s secretary for a year, I was promoted to the Financial Aid Department to work closely with students applying for student loans and grants to help pay tuition and fees, as well as working in the registrar’s office. My responsibilities in the registrar’s office included scheduling classes, recording grades and attendance, maintaining student records and transcripts, and scheduling substitute teachers. While I worked in the registrar’s office, Durham College partnered with the City of San Antonio and offered a program for senior citizens called the

“Older Worker Program,” and I taught basic typing and word processing to the senior citizens that attended. While teaching this program, I discovered my love of teaching and decided to return to UTSA in 1988 and pursue my teaching degree. While working on my teaching degree as a part-time student at UTSA, I worked several jobs to help pay for my education, including working five years as secretary/bookkeeper for an irrigation company in Pleasanton; bookkeeping for my father’s convenience store/truck stop business; and also working various other jobs at my father’s business. I graduated with cum laude honors from UTSA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in 1995. I have my Texas Teacher Certification in K-6 Education and I also have my ESL Teacher Certification. I began my teaching career in 1995 at Pleasanton Elementary as a self-contained educator, teaching all subjects in fifth grade. After a few years in the selfcontained classroom, I worked as a fifth grade math teacher then a fifth grade reading teacher. In 2006, I transferred to Jourdanton Elementary. In Jourdanton, I worked as a fifth grade self-contained teacher, math teacher, and most recently, I have been teaching fourth grade reading/writing. I am inspired by seeing kids learn and grow, and I truly enjoy working with elementary children. While teaching, I have also served on the math curriculum alignment committee and technology curriculum alignment committee; I was the fifth grade health curriculum leader; fifth grade team leader; and most recently, the fourth grade team leader. I also earned my Master of Arts degree in 2003 from Walden University in Educational Technology, where I studied the use of technology in the classroom. Some of the programs that I studied included Microsoft Office-including Word, Publisher, and Excel, and Dreamweaver, a program for creating web pages. I also spent several years working as an after school math tutor at Think Box in Pleasanton, a private tutoring service. I will be retiring from teaching at the end of the 20192020 school year after teaching in the elementary school setting for 25 years. I am also active and involved in my community. I attend St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Pleasanton, where I have been serving as a lector for the past 24 years. I am currently serving as vice

chairperson on the pastoral council at St. Andrew’s Church, and I also help every year at our annual church picnic by being in charge of the cakes and also by being an active buyer with my husband in the auction. I also served several years as secretary/treasurer for St. Andrew’s Mixed Club when the club was active in the parish. The Mixed Club served the parish by assisting with the hall rental and bar upkeep. I have been serving as president of St. Andrew’s Cemetery No. 2 Association since 2014. My duties as president include selling cemetery plots, coordinating and leading cemetery officer and trustee meetings, working closely with the funeral home to coordinate burials, and scheduling and working cemetery clean-up days. I have also been active in Project Grad, by being involved in the committees that plan and work fundraising events and working activities during the night of the Project Grad celebration for the graduating classes of 2014 and 2019. I became involved in Jourdanton FFA Booster Club while my daughters were active members of Jourdanton FFA program. I have served as treasurer of Jourdanton FFA Booster Club since 2011, and this year, I will continue to serve as assistant treasurer, even though both of my daughters have graduated and are no longer involved in FFA activities. As treasurer and member of the booster club, I help plan, coordinate, and work to raise funds for the youth of the ag program. Our fundraising activities include a barbecue chicken plate sale, lamb/goat prospect show, golf tournament, pingpong ball drawing, and working concession stands. The majority of funds we raise is used at the county livestock show, where I help work the consortium sheets for the Jourdanton FFA students in the livestock sale. I am a member of SPJST Lodge 202 Jourdanton, and I am currently serving as youth leader. I have served as youth leader since 2004, and in the past, I also served as Assistant District Seven Youth Counselor for seven years, beginning in 2011. As Lodge 202 Youth Leader, I am responsible for assisting youth in planning and conducting meetings; planning and coordinating youth club outings; planning and coordinating Youth Achievement Day (YAD) when we are the hosting lodge; planning membership drives; and planning and coordinating community service projects that the youth complete, such as decorating and filling “Shoeboxes for CASA,” working at the local animal shelter, preparing the Grandparents’ luncheon, donating items to the local nursing homes, and collecting

food, clothing, and money for the needy. I truly enjoy working with the youth of our lodge and district, watching them grow and become strong, successful adults. Being a part of the youth program has given me the opportunity to assist at District Seven YAD by helping plan, organize, and find judges; assist at State YAD; chaperone at LIT and district youth camps; and plan and attend youth outings, meetings, and workshops. I believe that the youth are our future, and I believe that SPJST is an important part of making sure our youth are prepared. I was elected as District Seven Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) this past spring, in which I work closely with other officers and members to plan and coordinate the fraternal activities in the district, including District Seven Fall Fun Day activities such as craft contests for adults, domino tournament, and cornhole tournament. I also served as a secretary for the 2008, 2012, and the 2016 SPJST State Conventions. I served as lead secretary for the 2012 and 2016 Conventions. My responsibilities included recording the proceedings of the Convention sessions and preparing the final Convention documents for print. My family has a strong background in SPJST, beginning with my grandmother, mother, and her sisters all being lifetime members. Many members of my husband’s family have also been lifetime SPJST members, including Pete Valchar who was a former District Seven Director and Tillie Valchar Koch, who served as an insurance field representative. I am excited to have this opportunity to run for the position of District Seven Director and to serve our membership. I have been able to watch my children grow into strong, confident, dependable, and outgoing adults because of the SPJST Youth Program, and I also believe very strongly in the fraternal, familyoriented ideals of this society. I want to serve District Seven as director in order to continue to be a part of the decisions that take this organization into the future. I believe in having an open-door policy and being available to discuss issues at all times. I also believe that being retired will allow me the time needed to devote to being the District Seven Director, where I can be 100 percent involved in district and Supreme Lodge meetings and decision-making. Fraternally, Regina House Lodge 202, Jourdanton —SPJST—

Non-contractual benefits to define, fulfull SPJST vision by Brian Vanicek SPJST President

For SPJST to remain relevant in the lives of its members — and in order for the Society to grow — it’s important that we as leaders possess a solid understanding of the role that SPJST seeks to fill in the lives of its members and in the life of the community. Every so often, I get asked by someone outside the organization, “What is SPJST?” I love to get that question! My short answer begins, “We’re a fraternal benefit society. Our mission is to sell life insurance and to do good for each other and for the communities that we serve . . . ” Given time, it’s easy to expand on that definition. The fact that SPJST touches so many and varied aspects of our lives makes that a challenging question to answer. Without question, SPJST is a financial organization: We sell life insurance to protect those you leave behind. It’s an expression of love and caring, and we’ve been doing it now for 123 years. Additionally, SPJST offers annuities, IRAs, and Roth IRAs. Proceeds generated from the sale of SPJST life products help to cover other areas of SPJST engagement. The insurance benefits outlined in your SPJST life insurance certificate are referred to as your “contractual benefits.” They are exacting arrangements which guarantee the payment of a death benefit to designated beneficiaries. Beyond these basis contractual benefits, membership in SPJST is complemented by what are known an “non-contractual benefits.” The online benefits — SPJST Perkspot, Freshbenies, Travel Insurance, and Amazon Smile — which were profiled in the January 13 Vestnik are all recent additions to SPJST’s menu of non-contractual benefits. The Vestnik itself is a non-contractural benefit of membership. And that’s just

for starters! Many of the characteristics which help to define the vitality and character of SPJST are the “non contractual” attributes associated with the Society. For example: SPJST is Cultural. SPJST supports the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogical Center in Temple; Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange; Czech Center Museum Houston as well as other Czech heritage organizations and celebrations throughout the state.

SPJST is Educational. Through participation in the SPJST Youth Program, including Youth Achievement Day competitions on the district and state level and patriotic essay contest, youngsters between the ages of five and 18 develop a greater awareness of the common bonds that we all share; moreover, SPJST encourages its young members to continue their educational development. Since its inception, the SPJST Scholarship Program has awarded more than $1.2 million to deserving, college-bound youth. SPJST is Recreational. SPJST celebrates life by bringing members and non-members together at events such as the SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration, Corpus Christi Getaway, statewide contests, local lodge activities, and special events. What’s more, SPJST’s Camp Kubena impacts lives through outdoor experience. Situated on 182 picturesque acres in northern Fayette County, the property doubles as a retreat center for family events, spiritual awakenings, and team building.

Participating in SPJST statewide and lodge activities is a non-contractual benefit of membership in SPJST. Pictured with 2019-2020 Miss Texas Chandler Foreman are Vicki Sims, left, and Lynda Novak, both of Lodge 84, Dallas, at the 2019 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration at Lodge 47, Seaton. The 2020 event will be held October 31 at Lodge 47.

SPJST is Charitable. Through statewide initiatives such as the Fort Hood Memorial, West Benevolence Fund, and countless lodge fundraisers and service projects, SPJST presents itself as a good neighbor to cities and towns throughout the state of Texas. Our Mission and Vision The strength — and future potential — of SPJST resides in its diversity and the ability to mobilize our 39,000 - plus members to action. It is through service to others and fraternal activities on the lodge, district, and state levels that enables SPJST to convey a sense of purpose and tradition. The broad mission of the SPJST — as defined and adopted by the SPJST Supreme Lodge in 2013 is simple: “Insuring and Enriching Lives.” The SPJST Vision Statement expands on that mission: “Our vision is to provide a wholesome family environment, to encourage cherished Czech traditions; and to provide high quality, competitive life insurance for our members.” Both the mission and vision statement are now part of our SPJST ByLaws. It is through fraternal outreach and the SPJST lodge system that we are able to define and convey this vision and sense of purpose. The challenge and charge for the future is to do it in a way that remains costeffective. Without question, SPJST lodges have been and remain the foundation and life of our Society in the communities that we serve. Lodges attract new members and bring people together, establishing a common bond among men, women, boys and girls of diverse backgrounds. Lodges help to keep members informed of the life insurance programs and the array of fraternal benefits afforded through membership in the SPJST. With the SPJST 2020 SPJST Vision Convention right around the corner, we’re looking to our lodges for inspiring stories to share, motivate and inspire. Granted, there have been some good ones in the Vestnik over the last four years; however, if there’s a special project or fundraising effort that your lodge has championed, we’d love to hear about it and share it in a series of video spots that are being compiled for SPJST’s social media and convention. Too, an SPJST orientation video is also in the works that will highlight various SPJST programs and lodge victories. If you have photos and/or video to complement your story, even better! Please direct your inquiries regarding the video series to Vestnik Editor and Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny. —SPJST—

From the SPJST State Fraternal Director State Fraternal Director shares February updates Premium Refund Checks and Fraternal Paperwork Please know that I set a due date for all fraternal paperwork to be in the Home Office by January 15, 2020. This is so I can report to the Supreme Lodge, prepare a report for the National Fraternal Alliance, and for mailing out lodge premium refunds from 2019. Please know that as of Tuesday, January 21, the Supreme Lodge has set a final due date on all fraternal paperwork to be back in the Home Office. It will no longer be May 1; the new due date is April 1, 2020, in order to receive the 2019 premium refund for your lodge. Fraternal hours and lodge officer listings must also be in the office by April 1. Otherwise, you will forfeit the premium refund for your lodge. This also includes 990E-card from 2018 taxes. Lodges that earn $50,000 or more are required to send a copy of the receipt from their IRS filing. Lodges under $50,000 are completed by Tamara Gettys here in the Home Office. If you have any questions, please contact me by email at frankh@spjst.com or cell phone at 254-534-0681. District Spring Meetings District spring meetings are right around the corner and will begin in March. These meetings are informative, and your participation and input are very important for the success of SPJST and your district. What better time to meet fellow SPJST members in your district. Please plan to attend the meeting in your district. They are: District One - Sunday, April 19 Lodge 9, Snook District Two - Sunday, March 15 Lodge 47, Seaton District Three - Sunday, April 26 Location to be announced District Four - Saturday, April 4 Location to be announced District Five - Sunday, April 19 Lodge 81, Needville District Six - Sunday, March 15 at St. Mary’s Parish Hall hosted by Lodge 4, Hallettsville District Seven - Sunday, March 29 Jourdanton Community Center hosted by Lodge 202, Jourdanton 2020 SPJST Lodge Enhanced Premium Refund The 2020 SPJST Lodge Enhanced Premium Refund Guidelines were approved at the Supreme Lodge meeting on January 22, 2020. Your lodge will need to follow these

guidelines in order to receive a refund in 2021. Please review these with your officers and lodge members. 2020 SPJST Lodge Enhanced Premium Refund Guidelines

otherwise noted in the Vestnik, the deadline for submitting items for publication are the first and third Mondays of each month at 5 p.m. Articles and photos may be submitted in several ways:

Traditionally, one of the most important financial benefits that the SPJST Supreme Lodge has extended to local lodges is the annual Premium Refund Program. The purpose of this program has been to help SPJST lodges keep their operations on a sound financial basis. The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

• Online at www.spjst.org under the “News” tab • Email to vestnik@spjst.org • Fax to 254-773-8087 (text articles only; photos not accepted through fax) • Mail to SPJST Vestnik, PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503-0100 • Text to 254-534-0807

1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and

4. Share compelling lodge/member activities and stories on social media. Lodges are encouraged to share compelling lodge/member activities and stories on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram. Some examples include lodge members serving a meal at a soup kitchen; members cleaning a cemetery; food drive for local pantry; hosting a heritage or cultural event; and contribution to non-profit organizations. The Vestnik/Communication Department is available to assist with fulfilling the lodge’s social media requirement.

2. 1.25% of the lodge’s annual earned premium. To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund in early 2021, lodges must meet the following four-point criteria: 1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Section 88 of the SPJST ByLaws and offer a well-rounded fraternal program. Every lodge is required to hold regular meetings to discuss lodge business with its members. Service to each other — as fellow SPJST members — and service to the community is an important part of SPJST’s mission. Rather than mandating a specific number of fraternal activities that your lodge must accomplish in a given year in order to remain in good standing and qualify for incentives, the greater focus is on lodges working to host a healthy mix of “quality” events that bring value to SPJST’s community presence. 2. Return all requested paperwork by the due date. Every lodge is required to send in all requested paperwork that is needed from the lodge. This includes Form 990, Form 990T, fraternal activity summaries, and updated lodge officer listing. 3. Submit routine news/photos to the Vestnik. Every lodge is required to submit news of upcoming events, lodge meetings, and/or meeting/event summaries and/or photographs to the Vestnik as well as to their local media. Youth submissions, member features, and obituaries are also welcome to be sent to the Vestnik. Every lodge is required to have a submission in at least eight of the 24 published Vestniks throughout the calendar year. Of course, the lodge may contribute to the Vestnik more frequently. Local news media features can also satisfy these requirements when the features are shared with the Vestnik (see contact details below). Vestniks are published on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Unless

• Enhanced Premium Refund will be withheld from a lodge deemed to be “noncompliant.” Enhanced Premium Refunds will be retained in escrow for a non-compliant lodge until April 1, 2021. If Enhanced Premium Refund Guidelines are not met by that date, the lodge will forfeit its refund. • The Enhanced Premium Refund formula enables lodges to benefit in direct proportion to the amount of earned premium that is generated by the lodge. As such, there will be no maximum amount that any lodge can receive. Guidelines for New Lodges and Lodges in Existence Fewer Than 5 Years For a newly chartered lodge, the lodge incentive award will be prorated from the date of the lodge’s organizational meeting. The lodge must also meet fraternal reporting requirements. During the first five years of its existence, any lodge that receives an award greater than $2,000, the excess amount will be deposited into the SPJST Lodge Management Fund. The lodge can access the funds at any time with two lodge officers’ signatures, subject to the approval of the Supreme Lodge President and Supreme Lodge Vice President. The Supreme Lodge reserves the right to periodically revisit the terms and incentives provided in the 2020 SPJST Lodge Enhanced Premium Refund Guidelines, making such adjustments and/or enhancements as necessary to ensure the success of the program and its participants.

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive October 1 started the SPJST 100 Pennies Drive to benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will run through March 31, 2020. So keep sending in your pennies! Calendar of Events Please remember to mark your calendars for the 2020 SPJST State Tournaments. Again this year’s state tournaments will be held at the SPJST Home Office. Entry for the tournaments will be $10 for members and non-members. There will be Czech pastries in the morning, a catered meal for the participants during the noon hour, and fun and fellowship. Ennis Sewing Circle Ennis Sewing Circle met Thursday, January 9, 2020, at Sokol Club Room. We started arriving around 8 a.m. and stretched Dolores Vrana’s pretty quilt. Before we knew it, we had quilters all around. We had 23 members. Thank you, everyone, for coming! We quilted till noon then President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch of three different soups and many, many different sandwiches. I wish we could have saved some of them for next month. After lunch, Dorothy Prachyl installed the new officers - President Liz Krajca, Secretary Dolores Vrana, Treasurer Anita Kubin, and Vice President

Irene. President Liz Krajca called the meeting to order and gave a beautiful bouquet of flowers to outgoing officers Irene and Dee. Secretary Dolores read the minutes of the last meeting, and Treasurer Anita gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. President Liz led us in reciting the “Our Father” and the Pledge of Allegiance. She announced the one and only birthday celebrant - Lil Kosarek - who turned 90 years young on January 1. Lil, you look great! Keep up the good work and have many more. In February, we will quilt for Maggie Holy. In March, we will quilt baby quilts. I think our members have about five small quilt frames, and they will bring them. That should be fun.

John Vrla selected 2019 Silver Beaver Recipient Congratulations to John Vrla who was selected as a 2019 Silver Beaver recipient which will be awarded at the annual Circle Ten Council on March 26, 2020, at Plano Centre in Plano, Texas. John is a member of SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas where he serves as president. The Silver Beaver is the highest award a council can award to a scouting volunteer, and it recognizes Scouters of exceptional character who have provided distinguished service within a council and who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council. John is an Order of the Arrow member which is the national honor society for the Boy Scouts of America and has been called to keep his vigil as a vigil honor candidate and will complete his journey to become a vigil member on the weekend of April 4, 2020, at Camp Constantin. The vigil honor is the highest honor that the Order of the Arrow can bestow

upon its members for service to the lodge, council, and scouting. Membership cannot be won by a person’s conscious endeavors. One does not seek the vigil, the vigil seeks them, and not what they’ve done, but what they’re going to do. “Scouting has impacted my life by surrounding me with true champions that have guided and mentored me to live the scout oath and law and to provide cheerful service to others in my daily life,” John says. “I have made many lifelong and true friendships that wouldn’t have been possible if not for scouting that exemplify the true brotherhood of scouting. Most of all I’ve been impacted by working with and seeing an incredible group of youth grow in scouting to be our future leaders of tomorrow. May God continue to bless this great country and scouting, to enable me to continue to serve others, and to do my best for many more years to come.” —SPJST—

Kay Lynn Kovar talked about how happy Geraldine Zhanel was with her Christmas sack from our Circle. I told how happy Bessie Laznovsky was with her sack also. We miss them both. I wish they could come be with us sometimes. Jon Dohorty was the 50-50 dollar winner. Congratulations to her. We want to thank Irene Prachyl for being president for seven years. Time sure flies. She was a good one, but I’m sure Liz will be a good one also. President Liz thanked all for coming and announced the next meeting will be Thursday, February 13. We will quilt, and we will have lunch. She also reminded us to please pay dues if you have not already paid yours. Thanks for coming. Stay well and happy. See you in February. Georgie Morales Reporter —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club The Telephone Committee of the Fort Worth Friendship Club has been busy. First, they called all members to remind them that the January meeting was being postponed a week due to the first Wednesday being on New Year’s Day. Then they had to make another call to all that there was a funeral with lunch at St. Thomas Church on the second Wednesday, and that we would just not have a January meeting. I have missed everyone and hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season. The next meeting is scheduled for the first Wednesday of February which will be February 5 at St. Thomas Church. Hopefully, it will be a nice day and that no one has the flu. Since I do not know who the February hostesses will be or the designated person to pick up the chicken, President Barbara said she would tell the telephone ladies, and they will let you know.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes to member Debbie Skrasek. Her mother, Velma Jo (Jody) Eakin Burns, passed away on January 3 with the funeral service being at Lucas and Blessing Funeral Home in Burleson. It was a lovely service. Instead of exchanging gifts for Christmas, everyone was asked to bring a Walmart gift card to donate to St. Vincent de Paul Society. I have since learned that $450 in gift cards was donated. Thanks to everyone for your most generous contributions. Anna Marie Moncrief had surgery before Christmas and is now doing great. Remember, it’s time to pay the 2020 dues. When you pay, Treasurer Margaret will give you a new membership booklet. I look forward to seeing everyone on February 5. Stay warm and well. So Until, Keep Smiling Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Our Circle is getting smaller and smaller due to deaths, health issues, or family matters. We encourage everyone that can, to come be with us. We guarantee that you will have a good day all day long. To all of our members who are going through “tough times,” just know we are thinking of you and praying that you’re on the road to recovery. Business proceeded as usual. President Cathy reminded members of the new member challenge. She encouraged everyone to bring a guest next month. After all, there will be a prize for the most new members you bring. Each year, we try to recognize community organizations. In 2019, we were able to help The Salvation Army, Safe Haven for Women and Children, school supplies/monetary donations for Castleberry Elementary and Lake Worth Elementary, food and cash for Tarrant Area Food Bank, and SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth. It was suggested that we start 2020 off with a donation to Lodge 92. We appreciate their generosity in letting us use their facilities, and everyone was happy with the choice. Our wonderful hostesses for January were Betty Krenek, Kathy Thome, and

Janet Pappas, who replaced Shirley Martin since she couldn’t be with us. It’s a lot of hard work, and we really appreciated them taking over the kitchen duties. Our lunches are always so very good. Garland was in the kitchen as always. Bessie Ellsworth and Darlene Tompkins celebrated their birthdays with us. We missed singing to Ann Cooksey, Starlene Clawson, Kai Martinez, and Kitty Rippin. Since they were unable to attend, we send our best wishes for many happy days ahead, and we look forward to seeing them soon. Door prizes were given away, and Birthday Girl Darlene Tompkins received one of them. Now what a deal— she received a birthday present she wasn’t expecting. We raffled off a bath basket which Binnie Thieme won. There were a lot of goodies and well worth the dollar ticket. Janet Basham led the group in the blessing for lunch, the meeting ended, we ate big time, and bingo followed lunch. What better way to spend the day with good friends, food, and fellowship. Everyone stay safe and warm, and we’ll see you in February when we will celebrate Valentine’s Day. Our plan for Valentine’s Day . . . We are going to do a Valentine Exchange Secret Pal kind of thing. If you plan on attending and/or bringing a guest and were not at the January meeting, we ask that you please bring a valentine and a “dollar store” gift to give to another person. The details are too long; just bring the card and a fun, cheap little gift. See you then! Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

In Memory of Ollie Duron Olga “Ollie” Chudej Duron was born on March 5, 1935, in Meeks, Texas, to Will Chudej and Bessie Hrachovy. She had a younger brother, William, and graduated from Rosebud High School. After graduation, she attended business school in Dallas, and went to work for Douglas Ollie Duron Guardian Warehouse Corporation where she was employed for many years until retirement. She also met Bob Duron after graduation, and they married in 1954. They were lifelong members of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas. Ollie and Bob were married for 63 years until Bob passed away in 2017. Ollie loved sewing, but her real passion was cooking. She left a wonderful legacy of Czech recipes handed down

by her family to pass on to future generations. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren always knew they came first with Ollie. Ollie passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2020. She was preceded in death by hus-

band Bob; parents Will and Bessie; brother William; and grandson Bubba. She is survived by daughters, Barbara (Johnny) and Mary Ann (Rick); son Bobby (Stefanie); six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. —SPJST— The deadline for all Věstník items is 5 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of each month. This section is dedicated to the youth of SPJST. As part of its membership benefits, SPJST offers a statewide youth program. If you or someone you know is interested in learning about opportunities offered to young members of SPJST, please contact your local lodge, District Youth Counselor, or State Fraternal Director at 800-727-7578, or visit www.spjst.org.

State Fraternal Director explains new youth year January 1, 2020 Beginning of New Youth Year As I have been reporting in my monthly letter, this is a traditional year in changing the timing of the youth year to coincide with the calendar year. I would like to answer questions that I have received. Youth Club Elections - Will not change. Elections will continue to be held in March, and new officers will take over at the June meeting. This will allow seniors to finish out their officer positions before leaving the Youth Program. Qualifying for Camp and YAD - To qualify, youth still need seven meetings. We will count meetings from June 2019 to May 2020, just like past years. This will give all youth an opportunity to earn their points for 2020 camps and YAD. Meetings during this time - December 2019 to May 2020 will also count for 2020 camps and YAD. Merit Point System and Points — The points for 2020 will be based from June 1 to December 31, 2019. The amount of

points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings will be for the winning categories. I hope this helps you with who will qualify for camp, YAD, and merit points. Merit Points and Due Dates Please know we are having an ongoing issue with a few youth leaders who do not submit their youth club’s merit points to the Home Office by the due date. Reports are always due by the 15th of the month after the quarter is over. Beginning this quarter, if the points are not turned in by the due date, the youth club will forfeit its money for the quarter and the youth members will not receive their merit points for the quarter. This also means your youth club will not receive it after the next quarter. Most of the time, everyone is good about getting this to us in a timely manner. I’m sorry I have to be so blunt, but Tammy and I have many responsibilities with the Youth Department and adult fraternal areas. If there is a reason you are having a problem getting us this information, please contact me. I am here to help you with solving this issue.

Stephe Ste phen nF F.. Austin: Austin: “T “The he F Fathe therr of T Texa xas” s” Stephen Fuller Austin was born November 3, 1793 in the lead mining region of southwestern Virginia to Moses and Maria Austin. In 1798, his family moved to present-day Missouri. In 1804, Stephen was sent to Connecticut to attend school. He graduated in 1807 and attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, where he studied math, geography, and astronomy. Stephen returned to Missouri in 1810, where his father set him up as a merchant. Moses Austin eventually lost his fortune in lead mining and traveled to Texas, where he fell in love with the ruggedly beautiful lands of Texas and secured permission from Spanish authorities—Mexico was not yet independent—to bring a group of settlers there. Moses fell ill and died in 1821: His final wish was that Stephen complete his settlement project.

Anglo-American settlers outnumbered Mexicans in the Texas territory by almost 10 to 1. Austin’s colony was an important settlement and the families there had begun raising cotton, mules, and other goods for export, much of which went through New Orleans. These differences and others convinced many that Texas should leave Mexico and become part of the U.S. or independent. In 1833 Austin went to Mexico City to clear up some business with the Mexican government and deliver demands from the Texas settlers. While returning to Texas, Austin was arrested, brought back to Mexico City, and thrown into jail. Austin was in jail in Mexico City for a year and a half: he was never tried or even formally charged with anything. Released in August of 1835, Austin returned to Texas a changed man. His loyalty to Mexico had been ground out of him in prison. Also, by the time he returned in late 1835, it was clear that Texas was on a path destined for conflict with Mexico and that it was too late for a peaceful solution. When push came to shove, Austin would choose Texas over Mexico.

Stephen Austin’s planned settlement of Texas hit many snags between 1821 and SPJST’s Camp Kubena in Fayette County and several 1830, not the least of which was the fact that SPJST lodges are located within the boundaries that Austin was 43 when he died on DecemMexico achieved independence in 1821, comprised Stephen F. TCGS: presents February Book of the Month: The Hope has its Name - Texas The Hope Has Its Name - Texas is the first of a seven-book series, written by MUDr. Josef Simicek from Lichnov, Moravia. It was originally published in the Czech language. In 2013, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) was privileged to receive the rights to publish this entire series of wonderful books about emigration in English in the

BROTHERHOOD

★ Založené roku 1897 United States. It has been modified and updated at various times. Dr. Simicek has lived in Lichnov all his life and maintains a museum dedicated to those who left for Texas from this village. Many travelers to Moravia have been privileged to visit this museum and, within the walls of this special place, found snippets of information that related to their families. Dr. Simicek, who has spent years and many dollars researching our Czech families, has made it easier for us to discover information about them. This first book gives information on emigration to America from the villages of Bordovice, Lichnov, and Verovice in Moravia during the period of 1860 to 1914. It is soft-cover bound, containing 246 pages of information and handdraw pictures. Included is a table of contents, a map showing the exact location of these three villages, and historical data about the Austro-Hungarian monarchy from 1618 to 1914. Each village is described from historical information: inhabitants, number of houses, pictures of the flags and emblems, stories about life in the villages, including interesting facts about agriculture, housing, heritage, crafts, burials, and much more. It discusses the reasons for emigration, the first steps taken, the first immigrants, documents required for travel, and tells of the perils of ocean travel. In addition, the book contains information on the various ships that brought the travelers to America. A surname index provides quick access to each family’s information. There are extensive ancestral charts and narratives to help one decide which family might include his ancestors. During February, this book can be purchased from TCGS for $45, with the

charge for shipping and handling waived for all orders received on or before February 29, 2020. Please send a check for $45, payable to TCGS, to Nancy Machu, 11 Stillmeadow, Round Rock, Texas 78664. If you prefer to charge your order to Visa, MasterCard, or Discover, please call 512-218-1559. Please specify the title of the book, The Hope Has Its Name - Texas, with your order.
