his week’s Věstník features 41 members who are graduating from either high school or college on pages 14 to 20. Congratulations to these graduates. COVID-19 When the novel coronavirus COVID19 struck the world at the end of 2019, few people anticipated just how much the virus would upend daily life in the months to come. Because there currently is no cure or standardized treatment for the disease, the best course of action has involved maintaining social distance to help cut down on the rate of spread. Social distancing has changed the way the public shops, interacts socially with friends and family members, and attends work and school. It’s also changed the way we meet and conduct events. SPJST Youth Showcase This week’s Věstník introduces the 2020 SPJST Youth Showcase on pages 21 and 22. Unfortunately, this year’s District and State Youth Achievement Days (YADs) have been canceled. The SPJST Youth Showcase will include several of the traditional YAD categories including constructed items, photography, pictorial arts, individual talent, and royalty (public speaking). These competitions will be held online. Please stay tuned for more information on this youth activity which is open to all SPJST youth who have completed kindergarten through high school senior. Summer Camp Canceled SPJST summer camps at Camp Kubena have been canceled for 2020 due to the coronavirus. However, Camp Kubena isn’t closed for the summer. “We

will remain a resource to the community and SPJST members that exemplifies our values of benevolence, humanity, and brotherhood,” says Executive Director Rob Clift. “The plans are to utilize camp throughout the summer months as a daycamp facility with limited activities.” This will include working with individual groups – including families, lodges and youth clubs, and other organizations that would like to come out and enjoy the property. For information, please contact Rob directly at 979-249-5674 or by email at robc@spjst.com. See President Vanicek’s letter on page 4 for more information about the cancellation of this summer’s camping program. Deadline for Convention Ads The deadline to submit an advertisement in the 2020 SPJST Convention Souvenir Program Book is June 1. Ads can be submitted online at spjst.org. SPJST Annuities may be a good fit for your financial plan during times of uncertainty by Richard Hrbacek SPJST Operations/Marketing Manager The importance of re-evaluating short- and long-term goals prior to periods of uncertainty cannot be overstated considering recent events. During these times of financial uncertainty, it may be more important than ever to review your savings or retirement plan. Your SPJST agent can assist you by demonstrating how SPJST can provide stability and help deliver a consistent rate of return to your financial plan. Markets change, information changes, and so do opportunities to protect your hard-earned money from those changes. Here are a few questions to ask yourself about your current financial plan in consideration of the current economic environment: o Has market volatility affected your retirement or savings?

Dear Editor, I do enjoy the Věstník - info on all the grads, activities of lodges, obituaries, history articles of Czech culture (menu, foods, etc.), youth clubs, and word seeks! Mary Ellen Kiely Lodge 187, Round Rock —SPJST—

o Will you be forced to change your retirement date . . . • due to market downturn - loss of principal? • due to layoff? • job change?

Recent Legislative Changes One of the several major changes in the Secure Act is that Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) will now begin at age 72, not age 70 1/2 as they have been. Beginning in 2020, every IRA account owner may make contributions to their Traditional IRA after the age of 70 1/2. These changes now allow those receiving Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) to contribute to their Traditional IRA. Certain restrictions apply as to earned income. The Care Act moved the tax filing date from April 15 to July 15. For members who have not filed their 2019 tax return and would like to make an IRA contribution for 2019, you may still do so prior to July 15, 2020. Both the Secure Act and Care Act have numerous changes in tax treatment that may or may not impact you. SPJST staff, agents, and Richard Hrbacek do not provide legal or tax advice. Members and prospective members should always consult their own legal or tax professional for information concerning their individual situation for interpretation, taxation, and guidance.

o Does your current plan provide enough safe income to cover essential expenses? o If you become ill and/or have a long-term care need, where will the money come from? o Are you in danger of outliving your money? Keep in mind, interest rates are at a low point on bank certificate of deposits and savings accounts. Markets have been volatile with ongoing up and down swings. Members who . . . • are nervous about the market and the big downturns • who want to save but not deal with the risk of losing money • who want a guaranteed interest rate • who want a guaranteed income • who want access to their money in the event of long term care needs without penalty*

. . . an SPJST Annuity may be a good fit in your financial plan. For our members who have recently changed jobs or for those who have, unfortunately, been laid off . . . if you are looking for a place to roll over your retirement dollars and earn a stable consistent rate of return, the peace of mind of an SPJST Annuity may be a good fit for you. We have all experienced disruptions in some manner due to COVID-19; some more so than others. During times of uncertainty, we seek stability, consistency, or simply, peace of mind. Each member’s financial situation is unique to them. An SPJST Annuity could possibly be what you seek or need to give you that peace of mind. Our annuity products can help bring a stable, consistent rate of return to your financial plan, and your SPJST agent is equipped and ready to assist you today. For more information on SPJST Annuities, contact your agent or call the Home Office at 800-727-7578. *Certain restrictions apply. Read the annuity disclosure statement for complete details. Interest are subject to change. An annuity grows tax-deferred, which means members do not pay taxes on the interest it earns until the money is paid out. Members may also pay a 10 percent federal income tax penalty on earnings you withdraw before age 59 1/2. Early withdrawal surrender charges may apply.

Lodges may begin meeting in June provided that precautions are taken

Summer Camp Canceled; Day Camps Invited to Schedule The Camp Kubena overnight summer camp program for 2020 has been canceled. The decision was made on Wednesday, May 20 by the Camp Kubena Advisory Committee comprised of District One Director Donnie Victorick, District Three Director John Engelke, State Fraternal Director Frank Horak, President Brian Vanicek, and Camp Kubena Executive Director Rob Clift. This was a difficult decision especially in light of Governor Abbott’s announcement on May 18 that would permit summer camps to open on June 1 with restrictions. “The decision was based on input from health experts, program leaders, and our years of experience managing successful camps,” says Rob. “After a careful review of the American Camp Associations’ Field Guide for Camps, the CDC guidelines, and the guidelines from the State of Texas; to implement the restrictions placed on our groups and staff for safe camp operations during the COVID-19 outbreak would be impractical at this time.” Under these restrictions, social distancing would continue. Also, guidelines mandate that there would be daily health screenings, the use of masks as well as additional personal protective equipment. Additionally, cabin populations would be reduced and all activities would be segregated by cabin groups which would not be permitted to interact with each other during their stay at Camp Kubena. Activities including cultural group dancing, hay rides, opening campfires, and closing programs would be canceled or dramatically limited. From the operational perspective, opening for the summer would have placed significant and additional burdens on camp staff. This would have included quarantining camp staff on site for seven to 10 days before the camp season begins. It would have also necessitated that camp staff would be required to remain onsite

except for supervised visits to town while wearing masks. “The added stress placed on our camp staff and group leaders would have been enormous,” says Rob. “The hardest part of our decision has been to think about the impact on our children. It is devastating that our overnight summer camp program will not happen this summer, but we believe it is the safest choice for the health and wellbeing of our groups, our staff, and our camp. That gives us great comfort we are making the correct decision,” says Rob. Economic considerations also factored into the decision to close Camp Kubena for the summer. As of this writing, all but one of the many groups that were signed up to use Camp Kubena this summer had canceled their reservations. “With 75 percent of the groups canceling, we are going to refocus our resources and efforts that will allow us to support the SPJST Youth Program and membership,” says Rob, indicating that he would be working with State Fraternal Director Frank Horak in hosting activities within the districts this summer. While the summer camp program is off for 2020, it’s important to know that Camp Kubena isn’t closed. “We will remain a resource to the community and SPJST members that exemplifies our values of benevolence, humanity, and brotherhood,” says Rob. “The plans are to utilize camp throughout the summer months as a day-camp facility with limited activities.” This will include working with individual groups – including families, lodges and youth clubs, and other organizations that would like to come out and enjoy the property. For information, please contact Rob directly at 979-2495674 or by email at robc@spjst.com. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek SPJST President —SPJST—

On Monday, May 18, 2020, Governor Greg Abbott issued an Executive Order to announce the second phase of the ongoing plan to open additional businesses and activities in Texas. This announcement expanded upon the businesses and activities included in the first phase of the plan to Open Texas while minimizing the spread of COVID-19. Businesses and groups that are being allowed to open will still need to observe standard health protocols outlined by Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSH). Surprisingly, the list of openings for the state of Texas includes no specific guidelines relating to meetings of civic clubs or fraternal organizations. Knowing that our members are eager to support each other and their communities during this transitionary period, SPJST lodges and youth clubs may begin meeting again in the month of June. To that end, the Supreme Lodge recommends that lodges and youth clubs adhere to the TDSH guidelines for wedding receptions: https://www.dshs. state.tx.us/coronavirus/docs/opentx/WeddingReception-Attendees.pdf To summarize, when members and guests attend a lodge meeting, they should, to the extent possible, minimize in-person contact with others not in the individual’s household. Knowing that SPJST members are a friendly crowd, at this stage of the game that means no hugging all of those dear friends you haven’t seen in a while! According to the official guidelines, in-person contact includes maintaining six feet separation from individuals. When maintaining six feet separation is not feasible, other methods should be utilized to slow the spread of COVID-19, such as wearing a face covering or mask, washing or sanitizing hands frequently, and avoiding sharing utensils or other common objects. Individuals aged 65 or older are at a higher risk of COVID-19. To the extent possible, avoid contact within six feet with individuals aged 65 and older. Senior members and others who may not be comfortable with the idea of meeting face-to-face may receive excused absences. Lodges that choose to begin meeting in the month of July will receive an automatic waiver for the month of June. To that end, lodge officers are encouraged to meet and make a deter-

mination if your lodge will be meeting in June or waiting until July. As previously noted in the May 11 Věstník, lodges are encouraged to experiment with and/or incorporate online teleconferencing as a way to stay connected. The spjst.org website includes some basic information that will enable you to get started. Building Rentals and Bar Facilities In accordance with the State of Texas Executive order regarding building usage, lodges with buildings that host venues such as weddings and receptions may do so provided that they operate at 25 percent of the listed occupancy for the facility. For lodges with bar facilities, Phase II of the plan to Open Texas states that bars may open on Friday, May 22 at 25 percent capacity. Additionally, it will be necessary for them to comply with the Texas Department of State Health Services guidelines. The entire checklist is accessible online at: https://www.dshs.state. tx.us/coronavirus/docs/opentx/Bars.pdf Additionally, for bars – and lodges hosting events and/or private rentals – the follow guidelines apply: • People should remain seated at tables when inside. • No tables of more than six people. • Dancing is discouraged. • Hand sanitizer stations should be at entryways. • There should be six feet of distance between parties. Bingo Games For those lodges that offer bingo, Phase II of the plan to Open Texas states that bingo halls may open Friday, May 22 at 25 percent capacity and are advised to follow these guidelines: • The business must keep six feet between each person playing bingo. • If offering food, businesses should use disposable menus; and single-use condiments only when requested. • The business should block off selfservice drinking fountains. Complete bingo guidelines relating to bingo may be referenced online at: https://www.dshs.state.tx.us/coronavi-

Monday, May 25, 2020 family has risen to the challenges that have come our way. While there is uncertainty as to when we will all get back to normal, I have no uncertainty about the strength, capability, and determination of our magnificent community of fraternalists. Thank you for all that you do and please continue to take care of yourselves and your families as you care for the welfare and future of our wonderful SPJST. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek SPJST President —SPJST—

From the SPJST State Fraternal Director State Fraternal Director shares June updates SPJST District Officer elections which were to have taken place at the 2020 spring meetings have been postponed for one year until spring of 2021. The Supreme Lodge passed a resolution in a special called telephone conference to postpone the election in deference to focusing on SPJST’s 2020 Convention process, including the hosting of delegates’ meetings in each district. The decision was also made to cancel all SPJST spring district meetings until 2021. “Given the extraordinary circumstances of the current year, the Supreme Lodge expresses its appreciation to all district officers who are willing to serve one additional year until the Society proceeds with new elections in 2021,” says Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. “In the event that there are individuals who are unable to serve through the spring of 2021, vacancies may be filled at the pre-convention delegate meetings that the Supreme Lodge requests to be held in each district prior to the August 14 to 16 Convention.” Update on Social Distancing Phase I of the State of Texas’ ongoing plan to safely and strategically open Texas began on Friday, May 1. The guidelines allowed retail stores, restaurants, movie theaters, malls, museums, and libraries to reopen on Friday, May 1, while limiting their capacity to 25 percent of their listed occupancy. As you all know, the 33rd SPJST Convention has been set for August 14, 15, and 16, 2020. As this convention is coming upon us, I remind all of you to read all of the information sent to you. There will be a lot of changes for the 2020 Convention and the 2024 Convention. Be ready to discuss and vote on any item brought up. We have two members who are running for the office of SPJST Vice President. We have five members who are running for director positions. We will also be electing members to the Convention Committee, if that by-law proposal passes. The Convention Committee member will also serve as the substitute director in each district. Vice President Hiram Dixon, District Seven Director Bob Bayer, and District Six Director Karen Kaspar are retiring after the Convention or not seeking reelection. The Supreme Lodge voted to extend the elected officers’, Věstník editor’s, and directors’ positions until the Convention. If I had to do this all over again, I would gladly do it. As for the members who are glad to see me go, I hope this makes you all feel better. I think that I did a very good job for the past 45 years for District Seven. I have no ill feelings against anyone. I will always remember my SPJST family. Love you all. Thank you for your support during my tenure as your director. S panem Bohem . . . “What’s next?” . . . Lodge 87, Temple reports on April teleconference Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in lieu of the regular lodge monthly meeting, President Sidney Kacir led members of Lodge 87, Temple in a teleconference call on Sunday, April 19, 2020, at 2:10 p.m. Minutes from the prior monthly meeting were read. Following a discussion led by President Kacir, members voted unanimously to make a monetary donation to Churches Touching Lives for Christ (CTLC) for the purchase and distribution of food and supplies to the community in this time of need. Members discussed concerns that at the time the SPJST Vision 2020 Convention is held, those who are to attend, including delegates, may need another option for participating in voting and other communication through a virtual source such as videoconferencing rather than being there in person if faced with high risk age and/or health-related issues in the event of exposure to COVID-19.

VĚSTNÍK President Kacir provided a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety practices in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The next teleconference call is to be held in lieu of our regular monthly meeting on Sunday, May 17. Fraternally, Carolyn S. Greene Secretary —SPJST—

Lodge 29, Taylor member shares Czech heritage through accordion music I’m a longtime member of Lodge 29, Taylor. I moved out of state in 1988 when I joined the Navy, but I managed to receive the Věstník in Guam, Italy, Japan, and several places in the United States across the years. I always enjoy receiving the publication, as it takes me back to Texas and my Czech heritage. My husband and I both enjoy browsing through, and looking for folks we know. I particularly enjoy the cultural, heritage, and language lessons. Keep up the great work! I retired from the Navy in 2012, and took up accordion lessons in 2016. It has brought me great joy to be able to play the polkas and waltzes I grew up hearing. When I visit my mom Lillian Kaspar and family in Taylor, I love to get together with Buster Pavlicek and play some Czech music at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. A couple years ago, I discovered I can livestream Vrazel’s Polka Show on KMIL website on Sundays. What a kick it is to listen to the broadcast from Central Texas here in San Diego! Just last year, I joined the San Diego accordion club, made some wonderful new friends, and met so

many amazing musicians. The club (usually) meets once a month for open play, and often has a guest professional accordionist perform for an hour. We look forward to when we can resume our gatherings. We have all been a bit cooped up lately. So a few weeks ago, I invited a friend to come over and play some accordion duets outside. It turned into a nice recurring driveway concert with several neighbors and friends stopping by to listen. We’ve done three concerts so far on Sunday afternoons. We play a variety of music, including international duets, oldies, sing-alongs, and even a few nursery rhymes if we have little ones listening. Several polkas and waltzes I grew up with are enjoyed across cultures, and are standard fare for many accordionists, regardless of heritage: “Beer Barrel Polka,” “Blue Skirt Waltz,” “Tick Tock Polka,” and “Westphalia Waltz.” It’s so much fun to be able to play these old favorites with friends in San Diego. Lodge 180, Burleson assists with providing meals to those in need It seems that it has been forever since I sat down to write the happenings that have been taking place with our lodge. I felt that I needed to write something to let all of the fellow members of other lodges know that we are all still kicking the barn door and wanting out! We have been unable to have a meeting since February. That is really very hard to believe that we have been invaded by a monster virus that is and has been attacking our fellow man, family, and acquaintances all across our country. Because the majority of our active members are not “spring chickens,” as the saying goes, and our meeting location was not open for assembly, we had no choice but to postpone our meetings. It has been done with saddened hearts, but through necessity for each other.

Monday, May 25, 2020 Lodge Helps in Times of Need During this time frame, we were approached by one of the organizations that we have helped financially before in our contributions. We decided that this was the time to help again as this organization helps in providing meals to those in need and to the elderly. It is such a blessing to be able to help during this crisis. Please be aware of your family, friends, and acquaintances out there and continue to urge them to be aware of their surroundings, being aware of social distancing, and wearing masks and gloves to help protect yourselves as well as those around you. This virus is not over; it has slowed down some, but it is still out there. I know this for a fact. Please stay safe so that we can have another conversation, hopefully after the beginning of June. Major Frank Zastoupil of Lodge 84, Dallas flies high with Blue Angels

Major Frank Zastoupil

Dear Readers, The United States Navy Blue Angels flew over Houston, Dallas, and Fort Worth, Texas on Wednesday, May 6, 2020, as part of Operation America Strong. The Blue Angels flyover of these cities was a collaborative salute from the Navy to recognize healthcare workers, first

responders, and other essential personnel while standing in solidarity with all Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic. When this spectacular display flew over Dallas, SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas members gave a special salute not only to the Blue Angels, but also to one of the pilots - Major Frank Zastoupil, who is also a member of Lodge 84. As a matter of fact, the Zastoupil family are 100 percent SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas members. Major Frank Zastoupil is a native of Kingwood, Texas, and graduated from Kingwood High School in 2005. He attended Texas A&M University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2009. Frank earned his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps through the Platoon Leaders Course in 2009 and reported to The Basic School (TBS) at Marine Corps Base (MCB) Quantico, Virginia, to complete training. Following TBS, Frank was assigned to the Center for Advanced Operational Culture Learning (CAOCL) for Russian

language and culture training. Frank joined the Blue Angels in September 2019. He has accumulated more than 1,000 flight hours across three different tactical platforms, has 10 carrier arrested landings, and 90 shipboard vertical landings. His decorations include three Strike Flight Air Medals, one Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and various personal and unit awards. We are so proud of Major Frank Zastoupil for his love of being on the team, flying high, and giving us a tearfully heart-throbbing moment as the Blue Angels flew over the Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston areas. Major Frank’s parents, Patrick Frank and Kris Zastoupil, are from the Kingswood area, and I’m sure he gave them a special high five when he flew over Houston! Thank you, Blue Angels, for a fantastic show, and to the Zastoupil family for your membership in the SPJST organization! Fraternally yours, Lynda Novak Lodge 84, Dallas Sales Agent —SPJST—

S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Shares COVID-19 Updates Dear SPJST Members, I have been asked by many of you about how the S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living facilities are doing since the arrival of COVID-19. I am proud to say, with God’s blessings, so far, we have escaped any diagnosed cases. Thanks to our new administrative team for this success. Rest Home No. 1, Taylor and Rest Home No. 3, El Campo-Hillje have been inspected by the state for our handling and preparedness of COVID19, and we have passed both with no infractions or write-ups from the state inspectors. Rest Home No. 2, Needville is surely on target to be inspected in the near future. Our census continues to be steady with a small decline in residents due to deaths which are unrelated to the virus. We have had no replacements due to the seriousness of admitting new residents with the situation that we are facing. Our Assisted Living in Taylor is doing great as well, and currently, it has no issues to deal with. Taylor will be undergoing the mandatory testing for COVID-19 by the Taylor Fire Department soon. We hope that our clean record will continue. I really do not want to admit anyone into the facilities, but this is unpreventable. It has been a real hardship for our residents who could not have family visit them, but they have made it so far. Many of our families have only seen their loved ones through the window. This is so sad, but we must be diligent

in keeping our residents safe. This has truly been a hardship on our families, but we continue to survive and be successful with our endeavors. We will be glad when things begin to return to normal, but we feel it will be a long time before that happens due to the high risks for our elderly residents. We plan to protect them to the best of our abilities. We will make no exceptions. The board would like to give special thanks to our administrators for their diligence and efforts to keep our residents safe and healthy. They have done a remarkable job, and we know they will continue to do so. Special thanks to Natalie Wright in Taylor, Kristi Petty at the Assisted Living, Juan Azua in Needville, and Rowena Tabler-Smith in El CampoHillje. We also want to thank all of our staff in all facilities for their dedication and loyalty for going above and beyond expectations to follow the direction of the administrators. We are proud of our entire Senior Living team who are dedicated and committed to being the best that we can be. We ask all of you to continue to keep us in your prayers and ask for your support to keep us going to provide the best care for our residents through this crisis. For those of you who have asked, thank you for caring and may God bless all of you and the entire SPJST organizations. Fraternally, Donnie Victorick, President S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living —SPJST—

This section is dedicated to the youth of SPJST. As part of its membership benefits, SPJST offers a statewide youth program. If you or someone you know is interested in learning about opportunities offered to young members of SPJST, please contact your local lodge, District Youth Counselor (listed on page 2), or State Fraternal Director at 800-727-7578, or visit www.spjst.org.

State Fraternal Director shares June news State and District Youth Showcase to Replace YAD for 2020 I would not have imagined in a million years that 2020 would turn out like this. I have spent sleepless nights thinking about the what ifs. “What if we can’t go to camp?” “What if we can’t have YAD?” Then I thought about our ancestors who migrated to this country under adverse conditions. They faced many challenges, obstacles, and even a pandemic in 1919. Somehow they survived and made their lives better. We can do the same! In a previous letter, I let you know about cancelling all State and District Youth Achievement Days (YAD). We are now diligently working on an online program. I don’t want to call it YAD due to this being something different. I like “SPJST Youth Showcase.” After having the virtual decorated rock contest with 155 entries from across the state, I know this will be a good way to keep our youth active and involved with SPJST. Please know we are still working on the timeline on how this process will work. Youth leaders, I will send emails explaining the details. Information explaining the rules for the categories and contests follows this letter. 2020 Camp Kubena Overnight Summer Camp Program Canceled Due to COVID-19, Camp Kubena has made the difficult decision to cancel its overnight summer camp program for

2020. The decision was announced on May 20 by the Camp Kubena Advisory Committee. Despite Gov. Abbott’s announcement that summer camps can open on June 1, the Camp Kubena Advisory Committee decided the restrictions under which Camp Kubena would have to operate make it impractical to open camp this year. In a letter to group leaders and parents, Camp Kubena Executive Director Rob Clift gives details about some of the guidelines such as the use of masks and PPE, restrictions of cabin occupancy, no cultural dancing or social large group activities like opening campfire or hayrides, and other restrictions. He also explained the significant and additional burdens that would have been placed on camp staff, including quarantining them on site for seven to 10 days before the camp season begins. It would have also necessitated that camp staff would be required to remain onsite except for supervised visits to town while wearing masks. The full letter can be viewed at http://campkubena.com/covid-19/ While the summer camp program is off for 2020, it’s important to know that Camp Kubena isn’t closed. The Camp will remain a resource to the community that exemplifies its values of benevolence, humanity, and brotherhood. The plans are to utilize camp throughout the summer months as a day-camp facility with limited activities. This will include working with individual groups – including families, SPJST lodges and youth clubs, and other organizations that would like to come out and enjoy the property. For information, please con-

tact Rob directly at 979-249-5674 or by email at robc@spjst.com. Flag Day Essay Contest All SPJST youth between the ages of five and high school senior are encouraged to enter this year’s Flag Day Contest. This contest will promote patriotism and creative literacy. Members who are ages eight and under are encouraged to submit an entry in the coloring contest. Several prizes will be awarded in the Flag Day contest. All of the winners will be announced in the Věstník leading up to Flag Day on Sunday, June 14. The deadline for all entries is May 31. This year’s theme is “The American Flag - Freedom, Courage, and Honor.” Youth leaders, this would be a good time to talk with your youth about the right way to display the United States flag and flag etiquette. You may also want to consider having a member of the Boy Scouts or the American Legion come in as a guest speaker at a future meeting. Presenting the 2020 SPJST Youth Showcase What is SPJST Youth Showcase? The SPJST Youth Showcase was born of the idea that healthy competition inspires young people to do their best! Competition is wonderful when it provides feedback to young people about their performance and improvement, when winning is not the sole objective, and when young people get to grow from the experience. For years, that idea presented itself in SPJST in the form of seven District Youth Achievement Day contests held in early summer and culminating with State Youth Achievement Day at the end of summer break. Thanks to the social distancing mandated by the coronavirus, that changed things — at least for now! The SPJST Youth Showcase aims to fill that void and will consist of competition in five categories: Constructed Items Photography Pictorial Arts Individual Talent Royalty Who Can Enter? The SPJST Youth Showcase is open to all SPJST young people who have a current SPJST Life Insurance certificate. Certificates must be issued no later than June 1, 2020. Any young person who has completed kindergarten to an incoming high school senior is eligible to participate. The 2020 SPJST Youth Showcase is open to youth who have not previously been part of the SPJST youth program. Contestants will compete for first, second, and third place recognition in four age categories in each district:

Royalty winners will be the 2020 SPJST Youth Ambassadors for the society.

Compelling, confident public speaking is a crucial skill that is often not developed in a young person’s formative years; however, it can strongly impact how the young person views him/herself and how he/she develops and succeeds in school. The poise and increased command of public speaking that are gained from competing in this category at the district and state levels will not only help youth in school, but also empower them in any situation they encounter in life. Lodge 187, Round Rock youth prepare bags of school supplies, snacks for neighboRHOod children We did a virtual meeting online and discussed the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/ 2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/socialdistancing.html The kiddos related to the part on tips for distancing that listed, “Consider a grocery delivery service.” This is what we were going to do, but it was school supplies and snacks. We also talked a lot about stress and ways to cope. The CDC also lists some great ideas: Ways to cope with stress: Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.

Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals. Exercise regularly, and get plenty of sleep. While most of us are familiar with some of the most common reasons for volunteering, such as making a difference and helping others, there are many additional reasons and motivations such as: • Teaching your children strong, positive values. • Changing someone’s life.

The youth did a great job of preparing 50 bags of school supplies and snacks to be delivered throughout the community on doorsteps. The adults did all the deliveries while maintaining a physical distance. It was overwhelming to see the smiles on the kiddos’ faces when we dropped off their brown bag specials. We even gave out an SPJST frisbee to all the kiddos who wanted one. We also maintained privacy to all the households that were helped to maintain their dignity. Blessings to all, Jennifer McCarthy Reporter/ Youth Coordinator —SPJST—

LCRA, City of La Grange award $10,000 grant to TCHCC La Grange’s Sanford Schmid Amphitheater to get new roof Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center will replace the aging roof of a popular amphitheater, thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) and the City of La Grange. The Community Development Partnership Program grant, along with $22,125 in matching funds, will help replace the 20-year-old roof atop the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater. “We really appreciate the grant and look forward to getting this project underway,” said Retta Chandler, Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center president. “Although the building is not old, it is very special. It was designed in the European style that is very important to the Czech culture.” The entire roof is worn, Chandler said, and a replacement is essential to protecting the amphitheater’s integrity and visitor safety. The amphitheater is available to the public for an array of events, including musicals, weddings, and concerts. Visitors can also explore the amphitheater when touring the cultural center. “The stadium can hold up to 400 seats, plus the grassy area behind us can accommodate up to 1,000 people,” Chandler said. “We want the community to enjoy the beauty of the amphitheater and the special events it hosts, like the Czech Heritage Festival, which draws between 400 to 500 people.” The community grant is one of 28 grants awarded recently through LCRA’s

Community Development Partnership Program, which provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, regional development councils, and other nonprofit organizations in LCRA’s wholesale electric and water service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. The City of La Grange is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and a partner in the grant program. Applications for the next round of grants will be accepted July 1 to 31. More information is available at lcra.org/cdpp. About LCRA The Lower Colorado River Authority serves customers and communities throughout Texas by managing the lower Colorado River; generating and transmitting electric power; providing a clean, reliable water supply; and offering outdoor adventures at more than 40 parks along the Colorado River from the Texas Hill Country to the Gulf Coast. LCRA and its employees are committed to fulfilling our mission to enhance the quality of life of the Texans we serve through water stewardship, energy, and community service. LCRA was created by the Texas Legislature in 1934 and receives no state appropriations. For more information, visit lcra.org. —SPJST—
