REALITY CHECK

The time for life insurance is now. If you’re like me, you’re probably trying to reevaluate this new normal we’re all living in. But one thing has stayed the same—how important my family is and trying to protect them.

The time for life insurance is now.

We’ve come face-to-face with the reality that the unexpected can happen at any time. And we’re all looking for ways to make sure our families would be OK 昀nancially if something happened to us. That’s what life insurance is for. The need has never been more obvious, and the time for you to get life insurance is now.

Martha Zavodny

4/9/ 1933 - 7/29/2020

For the past 20-something years, my spring and summer seasons have been spent traveling across the state to parades, district/lodge/youth events, Youth Achievement Days, camps, and various other SPJST activities. While I have certainly missed these experiences this spring and summer, I will be forever grateful for the change in course this year which has led me to find the silver lining in the coronavirus pandemic. I was able to spend more time with my parents during this period of time when I would have normally been on the road. And thankfully so. After a few very challenging weeks, my mom passed away peacefully on July 29. Seeing her health decline over the past few months was quite painful. But, the moments we shared together with her sweet smiles and warm hugs are now blessings and treasured memories. I am extremely indebted to have had these special times. My mom loved SPJST, and she and my dad practically lived at SPJST halls when I was growing up. I was one of the kids who ran up and down the dance floor during intermissions. Mom and Dad helped in the bar, kitchen, and ticket areas. I remember the joy in my mom’s eyes when she took me to my first youth club meeting at Lodge 24, Cyclone. She was proud when I sang A Ja Sam for Youth Achievement Day when I was six years old and just as proud when I competed for district and state queen when I was a teenager. She

was my biggest cheerleader and my best fan. And, I miss her tremendously. I am grateful for her love and all of the values that she instilled in me. I adapted author Bessie Anderson Stanley’s quote which perfectly defines my mom: “That woman is a success – who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; who has enjoyed the trust of pure women, the respect of intelligent men, and the love of children; who has filled her niche and accomplished her task; who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it; who has left the world better than she found it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best she had.” That was my mother. My sincere thanks to the many people who have reached out to me to express their condolences over the past week. The prayers, thoughts, and kind sentiments are carrying me through this challenging time.

Member offers scholarship thanks

Melanie, I saw and read the June 8, 2020, Vestnik article “Lidice.” It still breaks my heart. My grandfather and my father (Irvin) owned Navratil Music House in Brenham, Texas. When Hitler destroyed Lidice, my grandfather F.J. Navratil wrote this music to honor the Czechs in Lidice. I inherited the patent for the music and decided not to renew my patent, but to let it go into the public domain - in hopes more could know about and play the music - still honoring the memory of those sacrificed in Lidice.

Dear Scholarship Committee, Thank you for selecting me as a scholarship recipient. I will work hard to ensure that these funds are put to a good cause. Sincerely, Brodie Bachmayer Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—

There were no treasury reports. Floor Chairman Gene Pavelka and Bar Chairman Randy Pavelka gave their turn-in money reports. Under old business, Walter Kubitza was to meet with the gentleman that replaced the roof since we are having some problems that need to be addressed. With no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m. At this time, no meetings are scheduled due to the virus. Your reporter, Janie Brewer —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton hosts successful picnic Hello, Friends and Vestnik Readers, I hope each of you have had good health and that you, your family, friends, and workplace have been kept safe from the COVID-19. For those of you that have been affected in any way, we pray for you during this most difficult time. May God bless each of you! Lodge 47, Seaton knew our annual June picnic would be canceled to keep everyone as safe possible and keep COVID-19 away. After much consideration, the officers, board, and membership agreed to have a drive-thru only meal on Sunday, July 26. How many could we expect? It was hard to determine with our country in this situation. The number of 500 plates kept coming up. We stayed with that count, putting the number on all

Fort Worth Friendship Club Everyone at Fort Worth Friendship Club sends greetings to all our members and friends. We have not had a meeting since March. Our telephone committee has been busy calling everyone to say that no meetings will be held in August, and they will let us know when the next meeting will be held. I’ve had several calls to say how they all miss seeing each other. I had an email from member Linda Powell. She wrote that she enjoys hearing about our members. She said her grandson Nejan made it to the ninth grade. Fort Worth ISD is still up in the air as to when school will be starting. Elizabeth Creamer said she is not doing a thing - just staying home, which is what most of us are doing. We were all saddened to hear of the death of Father Mathew Kavipurayidam of St. Thomas Church on June 18. He used to come have lunch with us at the Friendship Club. On those days he could not attend, Mary Ann Krivanek always made sure a plate of food was left for him. Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Worth celebrated Mass, and he was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Fort Worth. A few days later, Father Henry Drozd of Ennis passed away on June 20 while in the care of his sister in California. His

funeral Mass will be at St. John’s Church in Ennis on August 8. Father Henry retired from the Air Force and settled in Ennis. He celebrated mass for most of the weddings and funerals of all the folks that knew him. I recall that he came to my birthday celebration at the Sokol in Ennis that my nephew had for me several years ago. Here is one more bit of sad news. Our Dallas Sokol friend Joe Pokladnik passed away on June 22. At this time, he was living with daughter Michelle and husband Laren in the Fort Worth area. Joe was on the Dallas Sokol Men’s Team, and they were most talented. During this time, Joe

was known for the “iron cross” he performed on the still rings; Walter Hosek was known for the “one arm hand stand” on the parallel bars; Joe Ehrenberger was known for the “giant swings” on the high bar; and Jerry Stransky was known for the “flair” on the side horse. They were all good. Of these gymnasts, Jerry Stransky is the only one still living. He receives the Vestnik so my question to Jerry is, can you still do the flair? All were SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas members. Our sympathy goes out to all three of the above. I had a call from Helen Skrasek of Oklahoma this morning. She is visiting her son and daughter-in-law, but plans to return home on Thursday. She said she is being treated like a queen, but then again, she is treated like a queen by Debbie and Gary when she is at home in Fort Worth. Both sons and daughters-in-law really look after her which is so nice. Tracy Horn is still at the assisted living, and she said she cannot leave her room without wearing a mask. Of course, the only place she can go is to “walk the halls.” Lydia Alholm sends thanks and much appreciation to Anna Marie Moncrief for all the kolaches she has been sending her. Anna Marie always stops in West when she goes down I-35 to see Patrick. Lydia’s caretaker also does work for Anna Marie’s husband. I hope Bill is doing better. Lydia is doing fine. “Happy Birthday” to our August celebrants - Pat McWilliams on August 12, Margaret Sears on August 17, and Betty Krenek on August 25. May you all have many more. Stay well, stay safe, and wear your mask. Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

In Memoriam In Memory of Martha Zavodny Martha Francis (Schiller) Zavodny, age 87, passed away peacefully at home in Rogers, Texas, on Wednesday, July 29, 2020. The family accepted visitors at Hewett-Arney Funeral Home in Temple on Monday, August 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. A private family celebration of life was held at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 4 at 10 a.m. with Ka- Martha Zavodny thryn Hartmann officiating. A public graveside service was held at 11 a.m. at Seaton Cemetery in Seaton. Martha was born to the late August (Gus) and Fannie (Luksik) Schiller of Red Ranger on April 9, 1933. She grew up on the family farm in East Bell County with her five siblings. Martha was a graduate of Rogers High School. On November 7, 1953, in Temple, Milton Zavodny officially made Martha “his girl” for the rest of her life. The newlywed couple settled outside of Rogers to build a home, farm, and family together that would eventually include twin daughters, Debbie and Faye, who were born in 1956. Daughter Melanie was born 16 years later. Martha lived in the Rogers area her entire life. Martha was an excellent cook, seamstress, and gardener. She enjoyed canning fresh vegetables and fruits from her garden and sharing them with her family and friends. Martha loved to watch reality television shows; two of her favorites were American Idol and Bachelor. Her life was surrounded by the joy of her grandchildren and great-grandsons. Martha always had a beautiful smile and kind word, and she found good in everyone. She will be remembered for her generous giving spirit, compassion for animals, and her cheerful heart. Many of Martha’s memorable years were spent taking care of infants and young children in her in-home child care. For 25 years, she provided the best

care and unconditional love to every child whom she kept. To this day, some of these children, now grown, have stayed in contact with Martha due to the lasting impact she has had in their lives. Martha thoroughly enjoyed all holidays, with Christmas and Easter being her favorites. She ensured the Zavodny household was decorated beautifully. She delighted in family coming together at the holidays and sharing in the spirit of the season. Family gatherings featured an abundance of homemade dishes and desserts. She also applied her crafting skills to assisting daughter Melanie with creating homecoming mums for Rogers Eagles and other local schools. She was proud of her heritage, and she stayed true to it by speaking the Czech language with her family and friends, listening and dancing to Czech music, and preparing Czech foods such as kolaches, sauerkraut, and strudel. Martha was a 50-year member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone - Flag Hall, where she served on several committees and volunteered at events and fundraisers working for the betterment of the organization. She was also always happy to lend a helping hand to youth projects, holiday events, and parades. She received the Lifetime Achiever Award in 2003 for loyal service and dedication to SPJST. Martha was also a longtime member of Western Fraternal Life Association (WFLA). She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Edwin Schiller in 1979; brother Gus Schiller in 1989; brother Johnnie Schiller in 1992; brother Rudolph Schiller in 2009; and sister Evelyn Henson in 2018. To cherish her memory, Martha leaves her husband Milton of 66 years; daughter Faye Hudson and son-in-law Carroll of Robinson; daughter Debbie Veselka and son-in-law Freddie of Robinson; daughter Melanie Zavodny and son-in-law David Nauert of Temple; granddaughter Ashley Shoesmith and husband Eric of Leander; grandson Scott Hudson of Robinson; great-grandsons Caseton and Bryce Shoesmith of Leander; several nieces and nephews; and devoted caregiver and special friend Melissa Hughes. Pallbearers were sons-in-law Carroll Hudson, David Nauert and Freddie Ve-

selka; grandson Scott Hudson; nephews David Schiller and Marvin Schiller; and neighbor/special friend Jason Koliha. Memorials in honor of Martha’s life may be made to Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, 119 West French Avenue, Temple, Texas 76501; or Gentle Transitions Hospice, PO Box 1509, Moody, Texas 76557. We take comfort in knowing Martha is in the presence of her Lord and Savior. She will be missed by all and never forgotten. —SPJST—

2020 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance Second Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the January to December 2020 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2020 youth year. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from January to December 2020. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities. What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district, and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards. Contest Dates January 1 to December 31, 2020 Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten or Age 5 to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 Years to High School Senior Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Fraternal Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Fraternal Director, may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Fraternal Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest.

Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Fraternal Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal. Merit Point Awards Awards are presented on the district and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through third place awards to top qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The top three junior and teen youth club members with the most points in each district will receive awards. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first through third places will receive the award. A youth may only receive the state award once in the age division. State Teen and State Junior awards are presented at State YAD. District Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place - $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on January 1 of

the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The 2020 youth year began January 1 and ends December 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school. Dist Ldg Name Pts Mtgs

TCGS August Book: Emigration from Moravia to America 1855-1918: The Area of Zlin The book, Emigration from Moravia to America from the Area of Zlin, is Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Book of the Month for August 2020. The Zlín region is located in southeastern Moravia on the banks of the Drevnice River. Its seat of government is located in the city of Zlín, which is a modern city closely connected to the famous Bata Shoe Company which was developed after World War II. MUDr. Josef Simicek, author of the book, states, “The first groups of Czech immigrants started to appear on the North American continent in the fifties of the 19th century. These shy beginnings were interrupted by the civil war during which all American ports were closed for naval transportation. “The victory of the North and slavery abolition meant a mass escape of black farm laborers to cities, where they hoped

to get easier livelihood. The production of agriculture dropped, and a large area of land lay fallow. The “Immigration Office” was established by the State of Texas, and its agents went to Europe to bring new settlers. They introduced agencies in European ports and published articles in newspapers that glorified America. Endeavors of these agents fetched success.” Most of the Czech people traveled through the port of Bremen. Their records were archived; however, they were destroyed by the bombings during World War II. Immigrant records were also recorded in the archives of Galveston, Texas, but they were destroyed by the horrible hurricane of 1900. The USA entrance ports were New York, Baltimore, New Orleans, Indianola, and Galveston. People traveling through New Orleans, Indianola, and Galveston mostly headed to Texas whereas those traveling through Baltimore and New York tended to go to the northern states, but this was not always true. “The Czech emigrants, mostly from towns, went to the northern industrialized areas of the United States and looked for jobs in New York, Chicago, Cleveland, and other cities. The country people were drawn up by fertile land in Texas and Nebraska.”

This book contains 131 pages of information about the Czechs who came to America from the area of Zlin, including a map showing the location of the towns and villages in this region, a short description of each town and village, sources used in the publication of information, along with extensive, alphabetized charts giving information about the immigrants. During the month of August, this book can be purchased from Texas Czech Genealogical Society for $45. The charge of shipping and handling will be waived for all orders received on or before August 31, 2020. Please send a check for $45, payable to TCGS, to Nancy Machu, 3337 Bianco Terrace, Round Rock, Texas 78665. For questions, please call 512-218-1559 and leave your number for a return call. Zlin . . . Czech Republic’s most unique town A few days ago, I messaged my good friend Bradley Stavinoha of Lodge 81, Needville about my hometown Zlin. It’s where I was born and where I grew up. The message was about a weird storm it had a few days prior, but what he found more interesting than the clouds were the houses, the nature, and overall how everything looked just so much different from Texas. In reality, Zlin is different from any other town in Czech as well. And there’s a reason for that. That reason is one man who built it. Here’s a little write up of why you should be interested in Zlin, a town that is not widely spoken about in a country where Prague is the one attraction that overshadows all others. ••• Zlin is the most unique town in the Czech Republic. While many cities in the Czech Republic have been built over centuries, Zlin in reality was built by one man over the course of less than 50 years in the first part of the 20th century. At first look, it is an uninteresting town, but if you look beneath the obvious, you will see that it is a place that is globally unique. Tomas Bata was the founder of Bata Shoes company, which was one of the largest shoemakers in the world at one time. Bata drew inspiration from Ford, whom he visited in the United States at

the onset of the car revolution. He returned to Zlin with the idea to implement automotive processes to shoemaking to revolutionize a whole industry and build an empire. This man not only built Zlin from 5,000 to 50,000 inhabitants in approximately 20 years, but he also gave the town its unique red brick look. Everything is built out of red bricks. Seriously. The whole town was built according to Bata’s design, including the layout of the city. The first part of the 20th century was the time to be in Zlin as Bata built everything: hospital, schools, biggest movie theater in Czechoslovakia and possibly in Europe, the famous Bata skyscraper with his in-elevator office, student dormitories, bank to finance the building of his factory workers’ homes, building homes, and much more. He only employed the best and most renowned architects and urban planners at the time. This man was the ultimate example of a capitalist, eventually also becoming the mayor of the town he built. He always insisted on very high moral standards of all involved in his business going as far as to educating his management and prodigies in gentleman behavior. Rules such as never sitting down in public transportation unless there are more empty seats than people applied to Bata men. Bata men were men carefully selected to be the future elite of his company crafted into shape over many years starting in school (which he, of course, also built and managed). These men among other things, involved in the top management of the company, eventually went out and set up new cities. Yes, new cities, such as Batadorp in the Netherlands, Batovany in Slovakia, Batawa in Canada, Batapur in Pakistan, and a few others.

Bata, controversial as any big visionary, was an enlightened man and a capitalist. His legacy still lives very strong in Zlin, and you cannot be a Zlin patriot not to know him. He is adored and widely studied by the local patriots and entrepreneurs as his methods were revolutionary then and are still applicable today. I’m sure they will be in the years to come. It does not take much to recognize that much of his teaching and approach was inspired by the words in the Bible. Many books were written about him. Bata died prematurely at the age of 56 in a plane crash while he was on a business trip. His legacy still lives in Zlin. Zlin is much more than a city - it is a story of a man told on every street corner. •••

This short writeup was written for my friend Bradley Stavinoha and our friends at SPJST for their Věstník. Feel free to contact me for more information about Zlin and the Czech Republic. We will gladly welcome our Czechsan friends when things return to normal. Reach me at pavel@ecalypse.com if there’s anything you’d like to know about Czech Republic/Zlin. I was born in Zlin and live in Prague. I love Texas, and I hope that our Texan friends will weather the current health crisis successfully so that we can soon again meet in person in Texas or in the Czech republic over a glass of pivo. REALITY CHECK

The time for life insurance is now. If you’re like me, you’re probably trying to reevaluate this new normal we’re all living in. But one thing has stayed the same—how important my family is and trying to protect them. We’ve come face-to-face with the reality that the unexpected can happen at any time. And we’re all looking for ways to make sure our families would be OK 昀nancially if something happened to us. That’s what life insurance is for. The need has never been more obvious, and the time for you to get life insurance is now.
