This earned him the title of “Popcorn King.” H e l e n served the Home Office as District Five State Field Representative from 1989 to 1998. She also served in local lodge, district, and state roles throughout her 75-year membership. Helen was an award-winning sales agent for many years, receiving the

Editor’s Note Thanks, Hiram, Karen, and Bob! Welcome, Richard, Annie, and Regina!
Results of the ballot in lieu of
convention are featured on pages 4 and 5 of this week’s Vestnik. The results were announced to the 33rd SPJST Convention Delegates in a live webinar format on the evening of Thursday, September 17. Later that evening, they were shared on SPJST’s Facebook page. Congratulations to those who were elected to Supreme Lodge and Standing Committee positions! The Supreme Lodge is welcoming three new members on October 1. They are Vice President Richard Hrbacek, District Six Director Annie Vahalik, and District Seven Director Regina House. Best wishes for much success in your new positions! We also congratulate and extend sincere thanks to Vice President Hiram Dixon for his 11 years of service; District Six Director Karen Kaspar for her 20 years of service; and District Seven Director Bob Bayer for his 32 years of service. We wish them good health and happiness. The left column on this page includes a listing of the Supreme Lodge members and Standing Committee members along with their contact information. SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration For the past 14 years, the SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration has provided an opportunity to gather with members and friends to enjoy beautiful vehicles and fun activ-
ities for the entire family. After careful consideration, we regret to announce that our 15th annual event that was scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2020, will be postponed to 2021. We take great pride in providing an exceptional event for all ages. It was especially hard to make the decision to cancel this year’s event. The health and safety of our participants, vendors, sponsors, members, and the community-at-large is our number one priority. We have decided the risks of having the event outweigh the benefits of hosting it this year. Making this decision was inevitable after recognizing that even if all the restrictions were lifted by our scheduled show time and we could assure the health and safety of everyone attending, it is not possible for us to put into place all of the elements required to offer a quality event. We appreciate your understanding of how difficult this decision has been. We thank you for your past, present, and future support and hope to see you in 2021.

Fraternal Focus Live starts October 13 and You’re Invited! We’ve all been to meetings or events where the presenters take an hour to present the message or program, and at the end, you’re left wondering if it was really worth attending. In order for a presentation to be of true value to the audience, it needs to be both engaging and informative. That’s the idea behind the Fraternal Focus webinar series that kicks off on Tuesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join in the webinar. While that is a true statement – everyone is welcome – the reality is that we are limited to the first 500 callers being able to join in on the call. Somehow I don’t believe that will be a problem. To participate in the webinar, visit spjst.org under “Events.” The word “webinar” originally came from “web seminar.” A webinar is essentially just a seminar or workshop held over the Internet, and it can be a presentation, discussion, demonstration, or other instructional session. In our case, the topic of the October 13 program will be the importance of strategic planning – of having a blueprint for your lodge to carry out its mission and make a differ-
ence for the members and for the community. This is not going to be a boring lecture from me sitting at my desk in the Home Office. Not at all. The presentation will include input – live and on video – from lodge leaders who have continued to put a premium planning in these trying times and have been making a positive and fraternal difference. I know that COVID-19 has had a terrible impact on lodges with buildings and especially those who depend on private rentals to make ends meet. Even so, many are managing to cope and are doing whatever they can – and in a responsible way – to maintain their connection to the community. We’ll be on the road in the coming weeks gathering stories and footage for the program. In the meantime, I want to hear from you about what your lodge is doing — or planning to do — that might inspire others to do the same! Please direct your inquiries to me at vanicek@spjst.com. I would also like to acknowledge the 2018 donations given through the SPJST Foundation to assist the volunteer fire departments in the District Six area through the SPJST Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. With the COVID-19 situation at hand, I have only been able to do one director’s donation for 2020 which was to Taiton Community Center (TCC). TCC is appreciated for all of the various SPJST District Six events held at the facility periodically through the years. We have 12 active lodges in District Six, and they are all representing for the 2020/2021 SPJST Convention. Thank you sincerely for your dedication and commitment to SPJST. To the lodges, officers, members, leaders, and youth of District Six: I have truly enjoyed traveling to see you all for lodge meetings and events. This includes the last eight years as I served as your director and the prior 12 years as your state field representative managing agents and sales. During these 20 years, there have been many, many traveled miles and treasured memories with each and every District Six lodge meeting and event attended. This also includes travels throughout District Five and District Seven as state field representative along with numerous trips to the Home Office in Temple. Thank you so much to everyone for your personal friendship and SPJST love. In addition to the 12 active lodges, we also have five inactive lodges. Of those, Lodge 125, Westhoff has recently been presented with the opportunity to reassign its membership to active lodges in District Six. District Six has experienced several noteworthy accomplishments over the last few years. Lodge 41, Port Lavaca donated two acres for the Six Mile Volunteer Fire Department Station. Lodge 23, Moravia was recognized as one of the first 25 lodges in SPJST with its original lodge building. The historic Lodge 19, Velehrad building was moved to Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange and a dedication celebration was held in 2019. We partnered with representatives of Wharton County Czech Heritage Society to host the Dozinky festival in conjunction with the District Six Fall Family Day. District Six Cemetery Organization representatives/volunteers take care of the upkeep of three SPJST Cemeteries in our district - Moravia, Shiner, and Velehrad - which are dedicated to the honor and memory of our forefathers and past members. I send a “great job” shout-out to our District Six youth club members for their participation and accomplishments in the activities and events that SPJST offers. You all are our future leadership, and we
need you. Congratulations to 2019 State King Luc Marcaurele of Lodge 30, Taiton in District Six. And, what a delight it was to see numerous youths involved in the virtual 2020 SPJST Youth Showcase held this summer. It was a job well done by all who were responsible for the success of this new venture. It has been quite an honor and privilege to serve on the Supreme Lodge these past eight years. I have been diligent through my leadership in doing my best and striving hard for the good of the organization. As I have served and chaired the audit committee for several years and served as Supreme Lodge Vice Chairman from 2015 to 2019 and as Supreme Lodge Chairman in 2020, I am humbled by and appreciate all of the mutual working relationships that have been built with my fellow board members. I sincerely thank each of you. I am blessed for the opportunities that I have experienced through SPJST. Through my seasons in SPJST, I have strived to do my best to leave it in a better place each time. I continue to be very excited for SPJST! Congratulations to Annie Vahalik, incoming District Six Director. I look forward to Annie’s experience and expertise for SPJST business, and I wish her the best. Congratulations to Richard Hrbacek, incoming Vice President, and Regina House, incoming District Seven Director. They both will also be assets to the board. I extend my sincere best wishes to Vice President Hiram Dixon and District Seven Director Bob Bayer on their retirements. Enjoy! Thank you to my lodge home - Lodge 30, Taiton - and again, to all of the lodges in District Six for their support and vote of confidence throughout my eight years of service as your District Six Director. I will definitely miss my travels through District Six and seeing all of you. I will miss my fellow Supreme Lodge members and everyone at the Home Office in Temple. This organization is an important part of my life, and each of you have a very special place in my SPJST heart! As I am stepping down from the Supreme Lodge directorship, I am planning to make good on my desire to stay active with SPJST. I will continue my work as a sales agent and fulfill a commitment of building our organization with future membership along with servicing present membership. I also appreciate the delegates electing me to represent District Six on the SPJST Finance Committee. God’s blessings to each of you and to SPJST. Stay healthy, and stay safe. Best wishes! From the SPJST State Fraternal Director State Fraternal Director shares October updates Meetings, Play It Safe Throughout the spring and summer months, SPJST lodges were excused from any requirements to adhere to their established regular meeting schedule. Moving forward, the Supreme Lodge will continue to excuse lodges from their established monthly meeting schedules. That is not to say you are prohibited from meeting. Any decision on the part of lodge to host faceto-face meetings should rely on a riskbased approach. Precautions to consider include actions to prevent transmission between people, and where to hold the meeting and how it can be modified to make a safer environment. Meeting organizers are requested to provide all necessary supplies – masks, hand hygiene stations, hand sanitizer or soap and water, tissues, and distance markers. Deciding not to meet remains an option that should be considered or when precautions cannot be effectively implemented or adequately communicated. Additionally, lodges are encouraged to consider incorporating online teleconferencing as a way to stay connected. The spjst.org website includes some basic information that will enable you to get started. If you have any specific questions relating to setting up an online meeting please know that you may contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at melaniez@spjst.com for additional information. Fraternal Focus Live Starts October 13 and You’re Invited Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek hosts the first Fraternal Focus webinar on Tuesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. The webinar is open to all SPJST members; however, it is open to the first 500 that register. You will register on the SPJST website under “Events.” The direct link is https://spjst.org/fraternal-focus/. Once you register for the webinar you will receive a confirmation email that you registered for the event. The topic will be the importance of strategic planning – of having a blueprint for your lodge to carry out its mission and make a difference for the members and for the community. This is not going to be a boring lecture! The presentation will include input – live and on video – from lodge leaders who have continued to put a premium on planning in these trying times to make a posi-
tive and fraternal difference. Brian would like to hear from you about what your lodge is doing — or planning to do — that might inspire others to do the same. Please direct your inquiries to Brian at vanicek@spjst.com. For more information you can find President Vanicek’s letter in the Vestnik. You’re all invited . . . and please wear your face mask. Fort Worth Friendship Club Greetings and hello to all members and friends of the Fort Worth Friendship Club! It has been more than six months since we have been all together - just too long! I have missed all of you. Anna Marie Moncrief sent me news the last time I wrote an article, and I do recall composing the paragraph and typing it, but between me and my computer, which both of us do strange things, the paragraph got deleted from the copy I sent to the Vestnik. I told Anna Marie that I would include it in my next article. Sorry about this, Anna Marie and Bill. Anna Marie honored her husband Bill on his 80th birthday with a homemade Texas sheet cake and homemade peach ice cream. Helen Rogers, Betty Landsfeld’s daughter, helped Anna Marie peel fresh Parker County peaches for the ice cream - both were so yummy and good. Anna Marie also submitted Bill’s photo to the Texas Rangers for the Doppel Ranger pop-up at Globe Life Field. Did any of you see Bill’s smiling face as one of the spectators? On August 14, Anna Marie and Bill celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary with a candlelight dinner at home. Congratulations, Bill, on your birthday and to you and Anna Marie on your anniversary! Each year, I always look for and buy Parker County peaches as they are the best. I missed them this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I’ve been staying in. Mary Ann Krivanek has been busy lately looking after her daughter, Mary Cecilia, who fell at home and broke her ankle on August 17. She has had three
surgeries since, and hopefully will be able to go home soon. She has been in the hospital and in Wellington Oaks Rehab. Get well soon, Mary Cecilia. That is a long time to be in the hospital. I talked with Lydia Alholm the other day, and she said all she does is watch all the sports on television and just sits in her chair all day long. The Wellington brings her food to the room each day. She said she is doing fine. Since everyone knows the Milan family . . . and since I don’t have more Friendship Club news . . . I will mention and send belated wedding anniversary wishes to Jerry and Henrietta Milan who celebrated their 63rd anniversary on September 15, to Gay and Darrell Williams who celebrated their 57th anniversary on August 30, and to Art and Jeanette Keim who celebrated their 63rd anniversary on September 8. The Milans, Williams, and the Keim’s daughters are all SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth members. I heard that Rome Milan looked great in the red sports coat he was wearing this past weekend at Klaire Stoppleman’s wedding. This sport coat was from the 1984 Olympic Games. Rome and the jacket got lots of attention! Happy birthday to our September celebrants — Mary Ann Krivanek on the 9th, Sherrill Gustavson on the 19th, Mary Schaffer on the 20th, and Libbie Vrla on the 29th. Sharron Connelly will celebrate her birthday on October 7. May all of you have many more! The phone committee will call each of you before the next meeting (whenever that will be). Stay well, stay safe, stay in, and wear your mask if you do go out. Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

SPJST Endowed Scholarships Members and lodges wishing to make a positive difference in the life of a young person and at the same time establish a lasting memorial may establish or contribute to an SPJST Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship may be established in your name or the name of the individual you wish to honor. SPJST Endowed Scholarships may be established starting at $10,000. By definition, an endowed scholarship is one in which the principle remains intact and only the interest is awarded each year. Once established, your scholarship will be managed by SPJST. Your endowment creates a permanent funding source that will grow over time and will support deserving students today and in the future. In establishing an SPJST Endowed Scholarship, you have the opportunity to set the criteria for your SPJST Endowed Scholarship. For example, you may wish to direct your scholarship fund to reward high achievement students who are pursuing a specific field of study. Other criteria for you to consider are specific colleges or universities, areas of academic interest or extracurricular involvement, community service, or hometown. Please know that in establishing restrictive criteria, you will be limiting the pool of qualified recipients.

Also, in accordance with IRS publication 526, located at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irspdf/p526.pdf, a donor may not select a specific individual as a beneficiary of their gift, i.e. scholarship recipients. SPJST Endowed Scholarships differ from others in that they are truly the gift that keeps giving. An SPJST Endowed Scholarship is a perpetual gift because only the interest is applied towards the scholarship while the
VĚSTNÍK principle continuously grows. Endowed scholarships are a wonderful way to honor a loved one or link your legacy with the future. The minimum gift needed to establish a named, endowed SPJST scholarship is $10,000. This amount can be paid all at once or in payments. Once the fund reaches the $20,000 amount, the scholarship will be awarded annually in the hon-
oree’s name. Until $20,000 is reached, the interest gained is reinvested in the fund. At the primary donor’s request, an endowed scholarship will be awarded every other year, provided that the endowment balance totals at least $10,000. There are many ways to fund an endowment, including gifts of cash, bequests, securities, life insurance, retirement assets, or properties.

State Fraternal Director presents October updates Welcome, Fall 2020! This certainly has been a year to go down in the history books. I do hope that 2021 will not be a repeat of 2020. I know that everyone is now venturing out more - testing the water with school, sporting events, and meetings. Being cooped up at home and not being able to venture out is for the birds! I am glad to hear that some of our youth clubs are meeting again. I look forward to getting out again and visiting with you at your meetings. Make sure to play it safe when you have your meeting. Heritage Fest and Muziky If you’re looking for a chance to get out and celebrate Czech Heritage Month in October – and doing it in a socially responsible way – please know that SPJST is once again partnering with Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange on Saturday, October 17 for its annual outdoor Heritage Fest and Muziky. You’re all invited . . . and please wear your face mask. SPJST will set up at the historic Lodge 19, Velehrad hall with a fish pond for the kids and axe throwing – for all ages – courtesy of our friends, Rob and David, from Camp Kubena. The fun and music starts at 10 a.m. and concludes with fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Here’s the complete schedule:

Czechs Celebrate Czech National Day October 28 is Czech National Day, a day of celebration in the Czech Republic. The holiday commemorates the date in 1918 when Czechslovakia was formed. In that way, it is similar to the way people in the United States observe Independence Day on July 4th. The events of the past are remembered in many ways. Typically, the President of the Czech Republic places a wreath on the grave of the former President Tomáš Masaryk who is considered the founding father and was the first president of the former Czechoslovakia. In the evening, the Czech President presents awards to important figures who lead cultural and social programs in the country. Lodge will continue to excuse youth clubs from their established monthly meeting schedules. That is not to say you are prohibited from meeting. Any decision on the part of a lodge to host faceto-face youth meetings should rely on a risk-based approach. The www.spjst.org website includes some basic information that will enable you to get started. We will be happy to work with you on this if you decide to pursue this option. Several youth clubs have taken advantage of meeting online. If you have any specific questions relating to setting up an online meeting, please know that you may contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny by sending an email to melaniez@spjst.com for additional information. Dates for 2021 Camp Sessions Please mark your calendars for these camp dates: Leaders-in-Training (LIT) Camp Wednesday, June 23 to Sunday, June 27 Junior Camp Session One Wednesday, July 7 to Sunday, July 11 Junior Camp Session Two Wednesday, July 14 to Sunday, July 18 State Youth Achievement Day Please mark your calendar for State YAD on Saturday, July 31 in Temple. The District Youth Counselors are once again planning to host District YADs in the districts. Look to the November newsletter for those dates. Youth Leaders Workshop: Attend In-Person or Online: The 2021 Youth Leaders Workshop
VĚSTNÍK will be held at the Home Office on Saturday, January 16. This training is an excellent opportunity for you to improve your skills as an SPJST youth booster helping youth on their SPJST journey. This 2021 event is earlier in the year than past workshops. The reason for the change is that our SPJST youth year now begins on January 1. In the past, you will recall, the youth calendar year commenced on June 1. The 2021 SPJST Youth Program handbooks will be updated this fall and be available for distribution as early as December. With regards to attending the Youth Leaders Workshop, participants will have two options: (1) Attend the workshop inperson at the SPJST Home Office on the morning of Saturday, January 16; or (2) Participate in the workshop via GoToMeeting. Youth leaders and assistant youth leaders are expected to participate in this meeting. The youth have an important role to play in the development of our Society. For that reason, we are also encouraging lodges that do not have youth clubs to designate someone to participate in the workshop either in-person or online. We want to spread the word far and wide of all the SPJST Youth Program has to offer. I encourage all SPJST sales agents to join in and learn more about the SPJST Youth Program and the important role it can play in the life of a young SPJST member. I would also like to extend an invitation to our new Vice President Richard Hrbacek to join us during the workshop to discuss bringing in new members and getting to know our Youth Leaders. Youth Development Workshops: New and Improved for 2021 We are in the construction phase of the 2021 Youth Development Workshop scheduled for Saturday, January 30, 2021. Who’s invited? Youth leaders, youth, and parents. Since the youth were unable to be together this summer, DYCs discussed having two workshops held simultaneously — one at the Home Office and the other at Camp Kubena. Districts can choose where to attend. Watch for more details in the November newsletter. Camp Chaperone Training Online Camp chaperone training for 2021 will be conducted online via GoToMeeting. Chaperones will be able to select from one of two scheduled sessions. Times and dates will be announced at a later date. Please know that it will be nec-
essary for you to join by computer, tablet, or smartphone. You will not be able to dial in with a flip phone or landline. Vestnik Project The November Vestnik Project will focus on Captain Richard King, founder of the King Ranch. Youth leaders, please let your youth parents know that from this point forward, the monthly Vestnik Projects will be presented for completion and submission online. The projects will be accessible on the www.spjst.org webpage under the “Youth Program” tab. If you should need a .pdf file of the Vestnik Project, please contact me by email requesting the project, and I will email it to you. Christmas Ornament Contest Your District Youth Counselor will be informing you of the Christmas ornament contest in your district. This information will also be presented in the Vestnik as it becomes available. 2021 SPJST Scholarship Applications SPJST scholarship applications are available now and must be submitted to the Fraternal Department by February 1, 2021. If you have a 2021 graduating high school senior in your lodge, please let them know they can apply for the SPJST General Scholarship. The Leadership Grant is based on youth club involvement from the eighth through 12th grades. Youth club members are strongly encouraged to apply for both the Leadership Grant and General Scholarship. Also, full-time undergraduates who have not received an SPJST Scholarship may apply for the General Scholarship. If you have questions, please contact Sandra Dubcak at 800-727-7578 or email her at sandrad@spjst.com. You can also download the scholarship applications at www.spjst.org. Click on “Benefits,” “Scholarships,” then “SPJST Scholarship/Grant Program.” You will then find the .pdf applications available to download. —SPJST—
Lodge 25, Ennis youth sings Czech National Anthem for youth showcase Dear Readers, Youth Achievement Day was much different this year due to COVID-19. It was very interesting to have YAD online and virtual instead of being on stage in front of a lot of people.
I practiced at my grandma’s house singing Písnička Česká multiple times. We got a case of the giggles, and we could not stop laughing. When I got comfortable with my song, I put on my grandma’s Czech costume from 50 years ago. Then she recorded me singing the Czech National Anthem in front of a pretty painting of the Saint Charles River in Prague. I got first place at district. I’ll be so glad when the virus is gone so I can see all my SPJST friends again. Fraternally yours, Madison Holland, age 12 2017 SPJST State Duchess —SPJST—

Dear Readers, I play football, and I have the same number (84) as my grandpa had.
Dear Vestnik Readers, I just started back to school. I cannot believe I am in third grade. I have two very good teachers for third grade. I can’t wait to go back to in-class learning. I am doing remote learning from home right now. We had an SPJST end-of-summer party. It was fun. We had pizza there! I got to try pizza with pineapple on it. I guess it was okay, but pepperoni and other pizzas are better. It has been very rainy in the first week of September. It is now sunny so I can play outside again. We have been having fun with our neighbor. He comes over a lot! We have a swing set, and he really likes to swing on it. It is almost fall, and I cannot wait till Halloween. Fraternally, Travis Ordogne, age 8 —SPJST—
Dear SPJST, I got moved to offensive line in football. Now, maybe I have a chance of playing. I got moved to defensive line nose as well and have been getting more playing time. Hunter Wood, age 14 —SPJST—
Dear Readers, I am in first grade. My cousins, sister, and I spent two nights at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. We are learning how to sing “Kde Domov Muj?” Grandma also taught us about “Hey-hey, Ho-ho” and Aunt Bessie.

Lynda said that all Vestnik projects will be online, and it will be up to us to make sure that we do them each month. State Fraternal Director Frank will let Lynda know when we turn in our projects. I miss our get togethers, but with COVID-19, we are staying safe and not leaving the house. My mom is teaching all of us at home again this year to keep us safe. I miss my friends at school, but I do get to talk to them on the phone. Youth Leader Lynda said that the mother lodge might start having some events coming up, and I hope we will be able to attend. It just all depends on the virus. Lynda also told us she will be meeting Megan and Ryan to give them their awards. Until next time, stay safe everyone! Josh Tucker, age 11 —SPJST—

Dear Vestnik, School is different this year because you have to wear a mask and stay socially distanced. It’s hard (sort of) being in school when this virus is going on. But I know I could get it, so I’ll go with the flow. Sincerely, Jenna Fair, age 10 —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy
In Memory of Sammy Kutac
We, the members of Lodge 84, Dallas wish to express our deepest sympathy to our dear departed brother JOSEPH EDWARD POKLADNIK, age 95, who passed away peacefully on Monday, June 22, 2020, in Fort Worth, Texas. Committal service was Tuesday, June 30 at DFW National Cemetery with full military honors. Joe was born August 28, 1924, Joseph Pokladnik in Benton County, Minnesota, to his parents Cyril Frank and Anna (Kartous) Pokladnik. He was the seventh of eight children. Czech culture celebrated on radio, in stories by Michael Barnes September 18, 2020 Brownwood Bulletin https://www.brownwoodtx.com/news/2 0200918/czech-culture-celebrated-onradio-in-stories One of this column’s most compelling correspondents is Gary Brantley of Cameron, Texas. He understands that Texas history happens close to the ground, and it is all around us, not just associated with books, museums, or monuments. He sent a note about one aspect of Czech culture in Texas that reminded me of previous stories we’ve done on this community whose language was still the fourth most spoken in the state when I was growing up. On September 6, Alfred Vrazel of the former Vrazels Polka Band, who has hosted a weekly radio program on radio station KMIL in Cameron since 1955, celebrated his 80th birthday, as well as the 65th anniversary of his radio program. “When the program first aired in 1955, the band actually played live in the studio,” Brantley writes, “while in recent years, Alfred has recorded it on Thursdays for its weekly airing from noon to 2:20 on Sundays. I usually listen at home as he plays polka music from great bands throughout the state, as well as music from the Vrazels. I feel lucky being able to enjoy the music and the great history behind it, while it’s all presented by a genuine Texas living legend. Listeners call in and email Alfred from across the country, and even from international locations where they listen online.” The September 6 program was especially meaningful because of the double
anniversaries, and it was a live show with Alfred’s wife Bernice, their daughter Cindy, son-in-law Michael, and grandchildren Jessica and Matthew in the studio with Alfred. “I caught most of the show and it was so cool listening to their memories of the band and the program,” Brantley writes. “In 1976, the Vrazels Polka Band was the only polka band invited to take part in bicentennial celebrations in Washington, D.C., performing at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. In 1991, they were invited to the Texas Festival at the John F. Kennedy Center in D.C., and in 1992, they performed at the Barns of the Wolf Trap Foundation in Vienna, Virginia.” The September 6 radio show featured several recordings made during that Barns of the Wolf Trap performance. “It was endearing to hear that ‘The crowd went wild,’” Brantley writes, “with a lengthy chant of ‘One more song!’ calling the band back for more. Shades of ‘The Boss!’” Brantley reports that good wishes and happy birthday messages poured in during the program, with Alfred’s family members announcing them between songs. “I heard a tribute come in from Russia while I listened,” Brantley says, “and Vrazels’ fans from across the nation called and emailed their appreciation of the band and its preservation of the Czech language and culture. Growing up as I did in Cameron, one had a lot of Czech and German friends and neighbors and nearly everyone knew a few words and phrases of the Czech language. Of course, one still hears it, but it has become less prominent now as demographics change.” Brantley’s note reminded me of a particular story I had written four years ago. In 2016, I reported about a key exhibit on Czech-Texan culture put together by

Congratulations to Alfred Vrazel of Lodge 15, Buckholts! Brother Vrazel, who is formerly of Vrazels Polka Band, celebrated his 80th birthday and the 65th anniversary of hosting a weekly Czech radio program on radio station KMIL in Cameron on Sunday, September 6, 2020. He is surrounded by his family - granddaughter Jessica Strmiska, grandson Matt Strmiska, wife Bernice, and daughter Cynthia and son-in-law Michael Morris.
friends Lori Najvar and Dawn Orsak. The show premiered at the Texas Capitol Visitors Center in the old General Land Office Building, then it toured the state. Alas, it is no longer in any shape to tour again. I offer now a few snippets from that story about “Texas Czechs: Rooted in Tradition” . . . The Czechs who came to Texas migration peaked in the 1880s - were primarily Moravians, but also Bohemians, Slovaks, and Silesians. Most immigrants landed in Galveston and moved inland to farm the land. Because their rural communities remained isolated, many of their traditions survived into the 21st century. One way that Texas Czechs endured rural life here was by creating fraternal groups - KJT, Sokol, SPJST, and others that tended to social, fitness, and economic needs. Also faith helped to preserve Czech culture. Tourists are dazzled by their painstakingly preserved painted Central Texas Catholic churches. Yet, the immigrants also included members of the Unity of the Brethren, a Christian group whose roots go back to before the Reformation. Almost every weekend, this Czech culture goes on public display somewhere in Texas at church picnics, weddings, fundraisers and cultural festivals, where centuries-old music, dance, food, and apparel are revived. The oldest such large-scale event is Houston’s Saints
Cyril and Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival, established in 1963. Lori Najvar, who grew up in Hallettsville in Lavaca County between San Antonio and Houston, often heard Czech at home. “My parents’ first language was Czech,” the Austin artist says about her Texas Czech family. “They spoke Czech first, then were forced to speak English.” To be clear, what her parents spoke was not what one would hear nowadays in the Czech Republic. “The language froze in time here,” Najvar says about a dialect handed down from 19th-century immigrants to Texas. “And it absorbed new words here, even a few German ones. Meanwhile, it continued to evolve in the old country. Our Czech dialect sounds more like old Moravian, from the area home to most of our ancestors.” Dawn Orsak is a fifth-generation Texas Czech. “I really wanted a project that honored my ancestors,” says Orsak, whose family also settled in Lavaca County. “I also wanted to focus on not just history but currently practiced Czech customs. I wanted the community to celebrate itself.” Her late great-uncle was John Morkovsky, bishop of the Galveston-Houston Catholic Diocese. The charming archival film footage in the exhibit comes from his personal collection. “There’s so much about the past in museums,” says Najvar, who made a
documentary about a Texas Czech family’s 50 years of sausage-making tradition. “But not much for young children to relate to, for instance.” “Czech language programs are dying out in Texas schools,” Orsak says. “The Czech Museum in Houston is more about maintaining arts and cultural ties with the Czech Republic. No more Czech-language radio, though there’s loads of polka stations.” Still, the exhibit-makers contend that each Texas Czech should find some personal comfort in their preserved culture. “It gives me a sense of place,” Najvar says. “It wasn’t till I went to college that I realized I had a culture to identify with. And I identified more with it once I got there: ‘Oh, it’s my culture that makes me like some kinds of food and like certain music.’ I found value in where I’m from.” “Everybody can learn from each other’s cultures,” Najvar says. “It broadens our perspectives. Our society is moving so fast, we are in danger of losing all this. Festivals are a good place to start, but talking to relatives or neighbors about their memories is better. If you can get it firsthand, it sticks.” —SPJST—

In the evening, kick back in your favorite lawn chair for the SPJST Octoberfest on the Deck with music by the Dujka Brothers from 6 to 9:30 pm. The music will also be broadcasted live on Facebook. Mark and John Dujka have been making music together for more than 30 years and have several acknowledgements, including being inducted into the Polka Hall of Fame at the KC Hall in Hallettsville, and receiving a favorite song award from the International Polka Association for their recording of “Church Picnic Polka.” The song is featured on their latest CD, Let’s Have a Party, which celebrates the duo’s 30th anniversary. Saturday, October 17 will be filled with plenty to do for the entire family at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange! If you’re not kin when you get here, you will be when you leave! TCGS announces October Book of the Month Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) is pleased to announce its Book of the Month for October 2020. Short Geographical Description of Communities from Vsetin County, The Czech Republic is considered by some to be an encyclopedia for family research in the Moravian section of the Czech Republic especially in the county of Vsetin, where many Czechs who now live in America emigrated from. This book, written by Richard Pavlik, was originally published in the Czech language by the County Pedagogical Council at Vsetin in 1957. Permission was obtained from the author’s family to allow Texas Czech Genealogical Society to translate the book and publish it in the English language. The book was first offered in 2004 and was reprinted in 2020. The book begins with a map of Vsetin County where the villages described in this book are shown in bold print. The first county land records date back to 1505. These records mention the fortress at Vsetin and the little towns of Vsetin and Przno; the villages of Hovezi, Jablunka, Ruzdka, Hostalkova, Jasenka, Dolni Rokytnice, Johanova, Liptal, Katerinice, Usti, Vyssi Rokytnice, Ratibor, and Seninka; and the ruined villages of Borek, Huslna, Teskovice, Mikulkova, Semetin, Sterbov, and Dvorce. In the land ownership records of 1548, the village of Svojanov was named as a ruined village. The history of 27 villages is included. Among items mentioned in the village information is the population, the original cadastre, track names and owners, schooling curriculum, religious affiliation, occupations, political divisions, and surnames of residents. A surname index, sorted by village, is included along with a surname index of emigrants from Vsetin County to America between 1853 to 1880. An excellent article about the beginnings of emigration from this area, written by TCGS member Arnold Pechal, completes the book. Short Geographical Description of Communities from Vestin County, The Czech Republic is a softback book, containing 142 pages. The price is $14, plus shipping and handling; however, the shipping charges on orders received on or before October 31 will be waived.
VĚSTNÍK Please remit $14, payable to TCGS, to Nancy Machu, 3337 Bianco Terrace, Round Rock, Texas 78665. For questions, or to charge the order, please call 512-971-4284. Submitted by, Nancy Machu Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—
History of The Texas Polka News In the Beginning: Julius and Marie Schultz Tupa It all began with Julius and Marie Schultz Tupa. Marie and husband Julius Tupa made their home in Houston. In fact, they first met at Bill Mraz Dance Hall, and that’s where he proposed to her as well. She jokingly said she wouldn’t marry him if he was going to be a musician. He told her he would give it up. Both of them knew that wasn’t going to happen. “Music was his life,” she said. Julius went on to form three bands – Sagebrush, Night Shift, and Sound Connection. He also hosted a polka radio show on KYND in Houston. In 1987, Marie and Julius, together with seven other couples, formed the first Texas chapter of the Polka Lovers Klub of America (PoLK of A) in 1987. The Tupas served as the group’s first king and queen. Also, that year, Julius united the statewide polka community when he began publishing The Texas Polka News, with the mission to preserve and promote polka music and dance. When Julius passed away in 2002, Marie had a decision to make – continue publishing the paper or stop the presses.
She knew how much the paper meant to Julius, and with the help and support of John Rivard as volunteer editor, she took on the role of publisher. John’s wife, Marlys, also was a regular contributor to the paper, and the couple were always on the floor at dance halls throughout Texas and the United States. When John stepped down as editor in the summer of 2014, Marie once again was faced deciding the fate of the paper. She decided to sell the paper to Theresa Cernoch Parker. “I am happy to announce the sale of the paper and see Julius’ legacy live on,” Marie said in the September 2014 issue of the paper. “I can’t thank John enough for his dedication and friendship over the years. And I can’t think of a more fitting person to take the publication to the next level than Theresa.” Theresa Cernoch Parker Theresa Cernoch Parker is a thirdgeneration Texan and native Houstonian born to a German mom from Weimar (Florene Helmcamp) and Czech/Irish dad from Dubina (Willie “Bill” Cernoch). She grew up within walking distance of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston in the Heights area and remembers going to dances with her parents at the lodge and Bill Mraz Ballroom. Theresa used her journalism degree from the University of Houston to write for newspapers, magazines, and communications departments at major corporations. She founded polkabeat.com in 2010 to honor the memory of her dad, a passionate polka promoter. The site is the only online source for a compilation of dance schedules of Texas polka bands, festivals, and church picnics. The site also has a Polka On! store featuring tee-

shirts, koozies, magnets, and other novelty items, along with a large selection of CDs. Almost 2,000 subscribers enjoy receiving a weekly e-newsletter listing the weekend lineup of dances, as well as photo and video coverage of festivals, band news, and a weekly laugh. The polkabeat Facebook page has more than 2,000 fans who appreciate the sharing of polka news, as well as information on all types of Texas music. In 2011, Theresa collaborated with musician Jimmy Brosch to publish the book Jimmy Brosch Remembers Twenty Legendary Texas Czech Polka Bands. More information on Julius Tupa can be found in the book. The New TPN Theresa purchased The Texas Polka News in July 2014 and resumed publication of the paper in September 2014. After three years of publishing under the guidance of Theresa and Editor Gary E. McKee, the paper has been hailed as the premier polka publication in the nation. Gary uses his background as a Texas historical author and photo journalist to bring to life the history of bands, instruments, and dance traditions. Theresa brings her Czech/German heritage and years as a journalist/writer to promote Texas musicians, bands, and dance halls. Polka lovers are also dance lovers, and Theresa and Gary have continued the tradition, started by John, of covering other genres of music, including country, western swing, and Cajun. And the paper has stepped up coverage of oprys and other live music venues across the state. It’s a tribute to Texas roots music. The newly designed, full-color newspaper debuted in January 2015 with polka legend Alfred Vrazel as the first

TPN stays true to featuring a calendar listing of dances and festivals, and has broadened the list to include live music events. Thanks to advertising partners Janak’s Country Market in Hallettsville and Slovacek’s in West, the paper also has expanded coverage of church picnics, and features “polka smiles” photos every month. Special editions include Spring/Summer Fest Guide (March), Oktoberfest Guide (August), and Christmas Gift Guide (November). TCHCC Takes Over The Texas Polka News has entered a new chapter! On August 1, 2020, Theresa Cernoch Parker donated The Texas Polka News to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. Without this extraordinary beacon, Texas’ rich musical history would be jeopardized. TCHCC is humbled by Mrs. Parker’s donation and would also like to thank the subscribers and advertisers of The Texas Polka News and PolkaBeat.com and look forward to keeping this publication one of the best musical outlets in the state. TCHCC has partnered with Fayette County Record to produce the paper and other supplements to the paper.

The Tradition of Svatý Mikuláš The Czech Advent tradition - Svatý Mikuláš - takes place on the eve of his name day, December 6. The preChristmas celebration is held in squares throughout villages, towns, and cities of the Czech Republic. On the evening of December 5, Mikuláš walks the streets accompanied by an angel - anděl - who represents good, and a devil - čert - who represents bad. Mikuláš asks children if they have been good during the past year. After reciting a poem or singing a song for Mikuláš, the anděl and čert, the good children receive treats candies, fruits, nuts, or toys - given to them by the anděl. Bad children receive lumps of coal or potatoes from the čert. Very bad children are scared by the čert who threatens that he will put them into his sack. Color the characters➡
