SPJST Memories SPJST Memories Editor’s Note: Special thanks to Georgia Pavlica of Lodge 47, Seaton for sharing these special SPJST memories with us. Georgia is a 67-year member and celebrated her 85th birthday in 2020. Here is a little story about my involvement with SPJST, which is minimal at best, but fun! My first encounter with SPJST was when I was just a toddler. My mom was a widow with nine kids. She worked hard during the week, but on Saturday nights, we got dressed and went to the SPJST hall. Mom would sit on the bench - remember the benches against the wall? No? Too young? And she watched us dance the night away with all of the other little kids there. When the little kids got tired and sleepy, they would lay on a quilt “under the bench” or in a cloak room. That was in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Then in early 1950, Walter Jakubec, who was an agent at the time, came to our house, and mom had me enrolled in SPJST. Soon after, Mr. Jakubec encouraged me to join the beseda dance group. That was a fun time. We went to different lodges to dance like the kids do now. We were a very large group. There

were married couples and some older people dancing as well as the young ones. Then in the late 1960s and early 1970s, I became an assistant youth leader with Adeline Kohutek. My daughter Susan and son Gary were in the youth club at the time. I loved working with Adeline and the kids, helping with projects, the Christmas programs, socials, chaperoning, and camping. I made many friends from the other districts. My husband John and I had our wedding reception and dance at Star Hall. After that – again Saturday nights were spent dancing at some SPJST halls in the area. I am a member of Lodge 47, Seaton, and John was a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone. Also on the wall at Lodge 24, Cyclone is a picture of Mr. Anton Sodek, Sr. I think he was the first president of Lodge 24. He was my grandfather from my mom’s side of the family. I have enjoyed being a member of SPJST and being involved with all the wonderful people in SPJST. I also loved the Coronabusters story in the Vestnik. East Bell County people just know how to have fun! —Georgia Pavlica Lodge 47, Seaton —SPJST—

Editor’s Note

Congratulations and thank you, Patsy! Honoring and celebrating someone who has touched your life and countless other lives is certainly a high point. But, when it’s a surprise to the special person, the look on their face is priceless and precious and brings joy to all! Kudos to former Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Leader Heidi Bartek for initiating a surprise party to recognize Patsy Koslovsky of Lodge 47 for 31 years of service as District Two Youth Counselor. Heidi gathered a team of current and former youth club members, leaders, and parents to plan what turned out to be an afternoon filled with hundreds of people reminiscing many SPJST memories and moments under Patsy’s leadership. The event was originally planned for Saturday, September 26 but was moved to Sunday, September 27 after Patsy’s sister, Shirley Franklin of Temple, passed away earlier that week. (Our thoughts and prayers are with Patsy and her family.) Thanks to Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall for hosting the event and to all who planned the party and attended. I still remember the first time I met Patsy. I was about four years old, and we were at my parents’ friends (and Patsy’s relatives) Miro and Helen Spanhel’s house. I instantly bonded with Patsy. As a little girl, I remember her

being a nice ‘big person’ who was fun and easy to talk to. I’ll never forget that she told me that if she has a daughter one day, she will name her “Melanie” – after me! And she did! What a coincidence that I find a husband named “David” since Patsy’s son is also named David. And this has all caused some humorous confusion over the years! Patsy was my District Youth Counselor when I was a youth club member. She inspired me and left a positive impression on my life. Shortly after I graduated from the youth program, she asked me to serve as youth leader at Lodge 24, Cyclone. What an honor it was to be able to work with her so closely. A few years later when I served as State Youth Director, I was blessed to have Patsy as one of the seven DYCs. We have shared so much over the years in SPJST and in our lives. Above and beyond everything, Patsy has been and will always be one of my best friends. I love you, Patsy!

Fraternal Focus Live starts October 13 and You’re Invited! We’ve all been to meetings or events where the presenters take an hour to present the message or program, and at the end, you’re left wondering if it was really worth attending. In order for a presentation to be of true value to the audience, it needs to be both engaging and informative. That’s the idea behind the Fraternal Focus webinar series that kicks off on Tuesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join in the webinar. While that is a true statement – everyone is welcome – the reality is that we are limited to the first 500 callers being able to join in on the call. Somehow I don’t believe that will be a problem. To participate in the webinar, visit spjst.org under “Events.” The word “webinar” originally came from “web seminar.” A webinar is essentially just a seminar or workshop held over the Internet, and it can be a presentation, discussion, demonstration, or other instructional session. In our case, the topic of the October 13 program will be the importance of strategic planning – of having a blueprint for your lodge to carry out its mission and make a differ-

ence for the members and for the community. This is not going to be a boring lecture from me sitting at my desk in the Home Office. Not at all. The presentation will include input – live and on video – from lodge leaders who have continued to put a premium planning in these trying times and have been making a positive and fraternal difference. I know that COVID-19 has had a terrible impact on lodges with buildings and especially those who depend on private rentals to make ends meet. Even so, many are managing to cope and are doing whatever they can – and in a responsible way – to maintain their connection to the community. We have been on the road gathering stories and footage for the program. In the meantime, I want to hear from you about what your lodge is doing — or planning to do — that might inspire others to do the same! Please direct your inquiries to me at vanicek@spjst.com. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek SPJST President —SPJST—

This was the first in-person meeting in several months, and even with today’s technology, it was much more fun in person. We started with a potluck lunch (thank you, Linda, for the great enchiladas), and some nice catching up with other members. We then had the monthly business meeting, and we covered a lot of items that had been delayed by the virus situation. We did maintain all of the safety requirements to keep everyone as safe as possible. All-in-all, we had a very good time. Fraternally, Don Fruin Event Coordinator —SPJST—

The Wagers will bring the turkey, and we are asking everyone else to bring one or two of your favorite side dishes for everyone to taste and enjoy. We are expecting a larger than normal group and would ask that you let us know how many people will be coming in your party. Please call the lodge at 281-373-9482. This will be a very big help in knowing how large the turkey will need to be. We hope to see you there. Please cover your face with a mask except when eating. Lodge 25, Ennis youth learns Czech phrases

Lodge 47, Seaton youth excited about Halloween

Dear Readers, 2020 has been full of surprises for me so far. Although having to be in quarant i n e had me feeling down for a little bit, my family and I found ways t o cope. W e have made the most of having to be home by playing games, cooking together, and playing with our pets. I’ve also had time to sit down and start learning some new Czech phrases. For example, I’ve been trying to use the phrase “fakt,” which means “is that true,” in my everyday conversations! Cody Nelson, age 17 —SPJST—

Dear Vestnik Readers, We had fun this weekend. I had my first soccer game. It went very, very, v e r y, v e r y good! Grandma e v e n came to see it. We went to Jerem i a h ’s Italian Ice after my socc e r game. I got a watermelon gelati. My gelati was very, very good. We then went to a friend’s birthday party. We did fireworks at the party. It was fun at the birthday party. The next day, I won a door prize at the SPJST meeting. I got Dr. Pepper, and I got root beer. I shared a root beer with my brother. It was the best weekend I’ve ever been through. I really want Halloween to come soon. Fraternally, Andrew Ordogne, age 5 —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton youth ready for in-class learning October is going to be a very busy month. This weekend, we are going to Dime Box and we are building a gate. In the third week of October, we get to go to the LukeFest at our church. It will have games and even a petting zoo. In one week, I get to go back to in-class learning! I cannot wait. Halloween is coming up. I cannot wait. I am going to dress up as Batman. Fraternally, Travis Ordogne, age 8 —SPJST—

The fest will be altered to a one-day event for 2020 only. The fest kicks off at 10 a.m. with heritage and culture in the Czech Village, an early 1900s recreated village complete with residential houses, barns, and stores. Demonstrations of early life for the immigrants will take place throughout the grounds all day, including working in the saw mill, the operation of the Czech Newspaper Museum press and engine, blacksmithing, corn shelling and grinding, hay pressing, and more. Plenty of food and cold beverages will be available as well. An antique farm equipment show sponsored by South Texas Wheel Spinners and Crank Twisters Club and an antique/classic car show will spread throughout the village. The Janak Barn and Texas Czech Agricultural Museum displays farm practices and implements from the late 1800s up to 1940. Children’s activities will also be available to keep those youngsters occupied. The Czech Village houses two music museums. TCGS announces October Book of the Month Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) is pleased to announce its Book of the Month for October 2020. Short Geographical Description of Communities from Vsetin County, The Czech Republic is considered by some to be an encyclopedia for family research in the Moravian section of the Czech Republic especially in the county of Vsetin, where many Czechs who now live in America emigrated from. This book, written by Richard Pavlik, was originally published in the Czech language by the County Pedagogical Council at Vsetin in 1957. Permission was obtained from the author’s family to allow Texas Czech Genealogical Society to translate the book and publish it in the English language. The book was first offered in 2004 and was reprinted in 2020. The book begins with a map of Vsetin County where the villages described in this book are shown in bold print. The first county land records date back to 1505. These records mention the fortress at Vsetin and the little towns of Vsetin and Przno; the villages of Hovezi, Jablunka, Ruzdka, Hostalkova, Jasenka, Dolni Rokytnice, Johanova, Liptal, Katerinice, Usti, Vyssi Rokytnice, Ratibor, and Seninka; and the ruined villages of Borek, Huslna, Teskovice, Mikulkova, Semetin, Sterbov, and Dvorce. In the land ownership records of 1548, the village of Svojanov was named as a ruined village. The history of 27 villages is included. Among items mentioned in the village information is the population, the original cadastre, track names and owners, schooling curriculum, religious affiliation, occupations, political divisions, and surnames of residents. A surname index, sorted by village, is included along with a surname index of emigrants from Vsetin County to America between 1853 to 1880. An excellent article about the beginnings of emigration from this area, written by TCGS member Arnold Pechal, completes the book. Short Geographical Description of Communities from Vestin County, The Czech Republic is a softback book, containing 142 pages. The price is $14, plus shipping and handling; however, the shipping charges on orders received on or before October 31 will be waived.

Monday, October 12, 2020 Please remit $14, payable to TCGS, to Nancy Machu, 3337 Bianco Terrace, Round Rock, Texas 78665. For questions, or to charge the order, please call 512-971-4284. Submitted by, Nancy Machu Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—

TCGS presents 2020 Christmas Ornaments After a year like no other, with the coronavirus causing havoc with our plans, our events, and our minds, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) is pleased to announce that our 2020 Christmas ornament campaign will be held, with a few adjustments to the past years’ procedure. While we will not be able to invite you to our gift shop in Temple, we will be happy to ship ornaments as we have done in the past. Once again, we have acquired some beautiful, unique ornaments that reference various Christmas legends, traditions, and symbols, and we believe you will be pleased to give them to your family and friends and to hang them on your own tree. The first four ornaments are shown. Watch future issues of the Vestnik for others.

Orders may be placed for shipment beginning on October 15 by calling Nancy Machu at 512-971-4284 or sending a message to nbmachu@gmail.com. Shipping charges will be added, based on quantity ordered. Please call for shipping charges and to ask any questions you may have. Wreath No. OR204 - $15 The wreath symbolizes the eternal nature of love – never ceasing and never ending. It is one continuous round of affection. Because they are circular in shape, symbolizing eternity, the circle of life, and endless hope, people began to use them at Christmas. Wreaths combine several Christmas symbols including holly, fruit, mistletoe, evergreens, tinsel, or other items, all of which retain their own symbolism on the wreath. The wreath has no beginning and no end, symbolizing God Himself. Noah’s Ark No. OR207 - $11 The story of Noah’s Ark and the great flood, found in the Book of Genesis, is common to the religions of Judaism, Christianity, Islam and the Baha’i Faith. It tells of extreme punishment for h u m a n wickedness in the form of an enormous flood. God saved only Noah (a righteous man), his family, and pairs of each animal, bird, and crawling creature on earth. They all took refuge in an ark which Noah built while the waters rose. After the waters subsided, God promised never again to cause such a flood. This ornament is of a whimsical nature, depicting Noah on the ship, along with two of each of the animals that were saved. Starfish No. OR202 - $11 Painted in hues of sand, orange, and brown, the starfish ornament is a symbol

19

of rebirth and regeneration because of the starfish’s ability to grow back limbs. A story about the Starfish which is circ u l a t e d widely goes as follows: “An old man had a habit of early morning walks on the beach. One day, after a storm, he saw a human figure in the distance, moving like a dancer. As he came closer, he saw that it was a young woman and she was not dancing but was reaching down to the sand, picking up a starfish and very gently throwing it into the ocean. “Young lady,” he asked, “why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” “The sun is up and the tide is going out, and if I do not throw them in they will die.” “But young lady, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it? You cannot possibly make a difference.” The young woman listened politely, paused, and then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean, past the breaking waves, saying, “It made a difference for that one!” The lesson is that everyone can make a difference. This starfish ornament is accented with crystal gems, sequins, and glitters and will make a meaningful addition to your Christmas tree in 2020 and many years thereafter. The Legend of Santa Claus No. OR209 - $16 In ancient times, St. Nicholas, the forbearer of Santa Claus, was known as a kind, benevolent man and was known for performing miracles. He was always ready to help anyone in need, and he became the patron saint of children. He rode into town on December 6, St. Nicholas’ Day, and the holiday season of celebration began. His legend lives on today, as Americans, who have emigrated from European countries, blend their beliefs and customs surrounding the Christmas holidays as they celebrate Santa Claus. The American Santa Claus embodies the innocence and delight of childhood

as he delivers gifts and treats for children everywhere. Legend says that he and his elves work all year, building toys and games and on Christmas Eve, he leaves the North Pole and flies all around the world in a sleigh, delivering gifts. There are many Christmas traditions in the world today. One thing is for sure: This American patron saint of children certainly brings joy and delight to all during the holiday season. —SPJST—

October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas Editor’s Note: This article was originally submitted to the Vestnik in 1997 by the late Willa Mae Cervenka, member of SPJST Lodge 54, West. Texas Czech Heritage Month is October 1 through 31. All Czech Texans are encouraged to participate in this monthlong celebration. The purpose of this month is to preserve and promote the many contributions made by Czech immigrants and Czech Texans, and to honor our ancestors. Throughout the month, we remember the past and our ancestors who were proud enough to stand up for what they believed in and loved. The Legislature of Texas passed a resolution, signed by then-Texas Governor George W. Bush, designating the month of October to be celebrated annually as “Texas Czech Heritage Month.” The idea for the resolution was introduced by Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka of La Grange. The Travis-Williamson Czech Heritage Society, during the presidency of Dr. Dorothy Bohac, was instrumental in having the resolution passed. The month of October was chosen because of its historical significance - Czechoslovakian Independence was proclaimed on October 28, 1918. This special month of October of each year will give us an opportunity to remember and commemorate our rich Czech heritage. Here are a few ideas: * Speak with school superintendents and principals informing them of Czech Heritage Month. Suggest that aspects of Czech culture be included in the curriculum.

VĚSTNÍK * Paint or sketch posters or cut out illustrations of the Czech Republic and display them in classrooms, halls, libraries, downtown shops, malls, and bulletin boards. * Display the Czech Republic flag with the United States and Texas flags whenever possible. * Ask students to write article about the Czech Republic, “What Czech Heritage Means to Me,” or about Czech-Americans living in Texas * Teach students greetings in Czech: Ahoj, Dobrý den, Na shledanou, Nazdar, and Vitáme vás. * Adopt a school in the Czech Republic. * Find pen pals in the Czech Republic. * Make a collection of short resumes and photos on persons of Czech ancestry who were in various professions, such as engineers, geologists, lawyers, nurses, sports, musicians and singers, etc. * Teach children a Czech song or a short dance routine. Play a video or cassette featuring “Annie in the Cabbage Patch,” “Red Handkerchief Round You Go,” or “The Beseda.” Ask students to participate in dancing. * Develop a family tree. Distribute generation charts to students to take home and trace their roots for future descendants. Eight volumes of passenger lists compiled by Leo Baca have listings of passengers, ports of entry and names of ships on which they sailed. * Take trips to Czech museums such as the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, Caldwell Czech Heritage Museum, Dallas Czech Club Museum, Sokol Collection in Ennis, Fayetteville Museum, and the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio. (Editor’s Note: Please contact museum prior to visiting to ensure that it is welcoming visitors due to COVID-19.) * Present Czech programs, music and singing of Czech songs at nursing homes, retirement homes, hospitals and veterans’ hospitals. You can provide this during meal time in the dining room or lobby. Feature singing and Czech music at shopping centers to make people aware of Czech Heritage Month. (Edi-

tor’s Note: Due to COVID-19, programs may need to be presented virtually.) * Share your travel experiences in the Czech Republic and items of interest from there. * Restaurants: Feature a Czech menu during Czech month. Add a little something to a hamburger and call it Czech-aburger. * Ask the mayor of your city to issue a proclamation. * Display a marquee sign, “Czech Heritage Month.” * Newspaper media: Submit Czech recipes during that month. Ask a news reporter to interview some early settlers in Texas. Submit an article on Czech notables such as Jan Komensky, father of Education, or Vaclav Havel, former president of the Czech Republic. Write an ar-

ticle about Czech composers: Antonin Dvorak, Bedrich Smetana, Leos Janacek or Jaromir Vejvoda, composer of Skoda Lasky. Write an article on the Czech national anthem, Kde Domov Můj? (Where is My Home?). Publish the anthem in English and Czech. * Radio: Contact radio stations about placing special emphasis on Czech music and programs. * Television: Set up interviews early with exchange students from Czech Republic or any person visiting from there. * Give special recognition to the oldest lady or gentleman of Czech descent in your city; write their profile and have it published. * Have children record an interview with their grandparents or great-grandparents.

Combine flour and milk (which has been heated in the microwave for 20 seconds) to make thickening. Add to pot. Add salt, pepper, and bay leaves. Simmer for a few minutes. Last, add cream and cook on low only long enough to get it hot. Note: This recipe takes 1 hour to make. I received it from Vladka Unruchova from Czech Republic on July 2, 2011. This is the best! History of Czech Marionettes

Source: https://pragshop.com/czech-marionettes/

Help the marionettes get to their stage.

Marionettes (dolls on the ropes) appeared long ago – in Ancient Greece and Egypt. Italian actors brought them to Czechoslovakia (Bohemia) in the 17th Century. Italian actors performed their puppet-shows on the streets and marketplaces. Through these shows, Czech people got acquainted with marionettes. History and culture of this territory were reflected in the character of the dolls made in Bohemia. The secret of making wooden puppets travelled by word of mouth among craftsmen. Today, there are about nine marionette theaters as well as 400 independent theater companies. But puppet-shows in the Czech Republic were not only children’s fun: at the end of the 19th Century, Czech marionettes helped save the Czech folk language from extinction. Before the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1918), people in big cities spoke German, not Czech. People who loved the Czech language very much, took marionettes and moved through the cities. Performances were in Czech. More people began to speak Czech again. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the First Republic Czechoslovakia appeared. The educated urban class (professors, writers, artists) set eyes on marionettes, and marionettes became an important part of the culture of the new country. Today, professional artists and craftsmen make marionettes as a handicraft. Traditional technologies and raw materials only of high quality - wood, cloth, paints - help retain marionettes for a long time. Marionettes make great souvenirs from the Czech Republic.
