Dominick Naplava was the first Texan killed in World War I. He was born in the small village of Zadovice, Moravia, Czechoslovakia, on January 11, 1892. He attended the local village school as time and opportunity permitted. As a very small boy, he had made one journey to the United States with an older brother to visit a still older brother who had lived in Houston for some years. He came back to the United States for the second time early in 1914. He boarded a steamer at Bremen, Germany. He had been accompanied on board by several friends, mostly musicians. Dominick had always had intense feelings of nationalism and patriotism. Just prior to departure and before the farewell music began, he offered his own sentiments about his homeland and friends when he wrote these words on a poster he displayed: To the Czech Nation, liberty—good luck” (in Czech). Dominick Naplava sailed for Texas, his new home.
Dominick had failed to let his older brother know of his expected arrival date, and it was for that reason no one met him at the docks at Galveston. He arrived in Houston a short time after debarking. His first job was with a railroad bridge building crew in the Houston Ship Channel District. His days of hard work in the Moravian coal fields paid off in the brawn and muscle necessary in his new job. He tackled his job with enthusiasm. After that project was completed, Dominick got a job as kitchen helper in the Houston Country Club. This opened a whole new field of association to him. He made many friends while there, and when he announced that he was going to quit his job at the club, he was urged to reconsider. He was happy but somehow restless. Patriotic fervor was seething within him. Continued on Page 16.

He discussed the rating change only effects the bond if it drops by two ratings, then you will be required to write the value of the bond down. He noted that only 3.9 percent of the bond portfolio is below investment grade, and that is due to the rating drop after the purchase of the bond.
Consultant Ballard noted that the portfolio is well laddered with bonds maturing and redeeming regularly which allows for the financial needs of the SPJST.
Recess for lunch from 11:50 a.m. until 1:05 p.m.

Thanks to our officers for doing the preliminary work in letting us undertake this task and make some important decisions. The entire board is committed to doing our fiduciary responsibility in making sure we operate as a business, realizing we can’t be all things to all people. Everyone in our organization needs to understand that we are a nonprofit, but for us to do and continue to do the things of the past, we must have a profit. Remember, “without a profit there is no mission.” We have faced many challenges over the last several years because of unfortunate circumstances, which we have overcome. We talked about some possible projects, and everyone was asked to think about and have some plans and options for discussion at our November meeting. Happy anniversary was wished to Brad and Joette Krpec - 20 years and Heather and John Garrett - 10 years. Happy birthday was wished to Marjorie Treumer, Abigail Garrett, Lauren Kresta, Emily Kresta, and Bubba Baker. Our next meeting will be Sunday, November 5 at St. John’s Parish Center. Lodge 24, Cyclone: site of anniversary celebration By Justin Everett • SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone
The year was 1977. Jimmy Carter was president. Glen Campbell’s song “Southern Nights” was climbing the charts, and “Happy Days” was one of the most popular shows on television. That was also the year Garrey and Cynthia Prcin tied the knot. On Saturday, October 28, 2017, Garrey and Cynthia Prcin celebrated 40 years of wedded bliss at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. Mr. and Mrs. Prcin are two of the most kind and pleasant people you will ever know. The two of them have also been attending SS Cyril and Methodius Church in Marak for many, many, many years. In the words of Alfred Vrazel, “That’s a lot of many’s.” The celebration started off with Garrey and Cynthia welcoming everyone. Afterwards, Mr. and Mrs. Prcin acknowledged all of the veterans of the US armed forces. Like at every anniversary celebration, a grand march was also held. I was amazed to see a tunnel made of people, ha ha.
Alfred Vrazel, far right, a member of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts, presents commemorative plaques to the Jodie Mikula Orchestra honoring their 50th year in the polka music industry.
Garrey and Cynthia made sure to provide wonderful, live entertainment by two great bands - The Dujka Brothers and The Jodie Mikula Orchestra. Alfred Vrazel even presented the Jodie Mikula Orchestra with commemorative plaques honoring their 50th year in the polka music industry. While Alfred was presenting the plaques, he jokingly said, “I remember when the Vrazels played a dance with the Mikulas in Tombstone, Arizona. I mean Tucson, Arizona. I’m thinking of Wyatt Earp.” Mr. and Mrs. Prcin also supplied delicious barbecue. My barbecue was so tender, it practically melted in my mouth. Finally, at the end of the celebration, a jam session was held featuring guest musicians. I want to say a very happy anniversary to Garrey and Cynthia, and I wish them many, many, many more happy years of marriage. That’s a lot of many’s again. —SPJST—

Updated DPS Driver Handbook now available
Effective September 1, 2017, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Texas Driver Handbook was revised and transitioned to a printable, online-only format. Handbook revisions include information on texting while driving and several other clarifications passed by the Texas Legislature during the 85th Legislative Session. Additionally, the handbook includes practical suggestions on what the public should expect and actions to follow when pulled over by law enforcement. The information in this section of the book, beginning on page 68, was compiled through input from a working group of interested stakeholders, including advocacy attorneys, civil liberty organizations, law enforcement and legislative members. These practical suggestions in the handbook will also serve as a base foundation for the educational curriculum that will be developed as a result of Senate Bill 30. All of these revisions and additions to the handbook were made in order to further assist new Texas drivers in learning the rules of the road and enhancing public safety for all Texans by making our roadways safer. Simple Tips to Reduce Suffering this Flu Season
Wednesday, November 8, 2017
(StatePoint) U.S. health officials are predicting a harsh flu season. While there is still no cure for flu, there are steps you can take to reduce suffering while the virus takes its course. Some experts suggest starting the quest to feel better by exploring your local health food store. Dr. Lawrence Rosen, author of several books based on 25 years of practicing pediatric integrative medicine, is offering some advice to ease flu symptoms. While none of the items mentioned in this article have been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, most have a long history and are relatively inexpensive. Curative Foods and Beverages: The digestive tract accounts for 70 to 80 percent of the immune system. When battling a virus, foods rich in vitamin C are essential to immune function. Try drinking a cup of hot water and lemon daily. Onion tea can promote a healthy respiratory system by relieving a cough and sore throat. Honey, which is a superfood, is a good choice, coating and soothing the throat, helping control cough, and promoting a restful night’s sleep that is necessary for healing. Spiced-up Recipes: Add garlic and oregano to foods for immune support. Basil, rosemary and thyme help the respiratory tract. Try different recipes, too. One traditional bedtime treatment in the Dominican Republic is a paste of honey, finely chopped onion and garlic, and the juice of at least half a lime. The vitamin C content found in its ingredients helps boost immunity. Indispensable Oils: Add eucalyptus oil to a bath to ease body aches from flu, or inhale drops added to a steaming bowl of water for clearer nasal passages. Inhale fennel oil similarly as a cough expectorant. Homeopathic Medicine: There are few conventional over-the-counter (OTC) drugs specifically for flu symptoms. Antihistamines and decongestants help with head and upper respiratory symptoms that are mostly associated with colds. Flu affects the whole body with fever, chills, aches and fatigue, and a pain reliever can address some of these symptoms. To shorten both the duration and severity of flu-like symptoms, consider a homeopathic medicine, such as Oscillococcinum. When patients took it
15
within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms, nearly 63 percent showed “clear improvement” or “complete resolution” within 48 hours. It’s the number one over-the-counter flu medicine in France, where it’s been on the market for more than 70 years. The key is to take quick action against early symptoms. Recommended for anyone age 2 and up, Oscillo is non-drowsy and doesn’t interact with other medications. Healing Herbs and Plants: Homeopathic OTCs use microdoses of plants, animals and minerals; whereas herbal supplements are less diluted with a different therapeutic principle. Astragalus and echinacea supplements purportedly boost immunity. Try teas with eucalyptus leaves or calendula for fever. Elderberry, when taken in extract form, boosts the immune system, which helps the body respond quickly and strongly to viruses such as influenza. For more information, check out Dr. Rosen’s book, “Treatment Alternatives for Children,” a comprehensive reference guide for nearly 100 common illnesses, offering side-by-side comparisons between conventional and alternative treatment options. —SPJST—

after arriving in Texas. The law required that full citizenship not be granted until after a residence of five full years. Before the United States entered World War I, Dominick had tried to enlist in the United States Army, but because of his citizenship status, he was rejected. Determined to serve in the armed forces, he went to Canada (Winnipeg) in 1917 and enlisted in the Canadian Army. He had told no one of his intentions. War between Austria-Hungary and Serbia had been declared July 28, 1914. “The hour has sounded when the sacred dream of our fathers will be realized; Bohemia will be born again,” he had told his brother earlier. Memories of his birthplace, Zadovice, his mother, and family came across his mind again and again, and his nationalistic passions were again aroused. He had the urge to fight. The memories of the past, coupled with the inspiration of his American experiences, carried him into battle. “Killed in action on the morning of November 12, 1917,” began the message from the Canadian Government to his brother John Naplava in Houston. “He was out on a work party under L.D.G. Sheratt, digging a ditch to drain the water off the road east of Kansas Cross. While returning to billets along the Duck Walk (rr track), a German airplane dropped three bombs on the party, wounding the officers, including Pvt. Naplava, who was struck on the back of the head by a piece of one of the bombs and died instantly at about 11 a.m. on November 12, 1917.” Thus went the story from the Canadian Government. In Canadian Army records, he was “No, 294,914, Sec. D. of Unit 107 Battalion.” Today, the name of Dominick Naplava is engraved in bronze on the Gold Star Honor Roll erected in front of the city hall in Houston. He did not live to see the reality of a free Czechoslovakia, to which he had contributed so mightily. Nobly, he lived and served and gloriously, he died. The young man who had dug coal in the Moravian coal fields had not died in vain. In one of his last communications to friends in Texas, he wrote: “ . . . We care not how we shall emerge from this conflict, be it sound or well or wounded. Nor shall it matter that our bones will rest on French soil, or any other soil, as long as our dear Czech country emerges a free land from this conflict. The dove of peace must make its flight over our beloved land. Would
that my mother could know that her son is again in Europe and in battle.” Between the time Dominick Naplava left Houston and enlisted in the Canadian Army, he spent some time in Trinity, Texas, Trinity County, about 40 miles northeast of Huntsville. It was from Trinity that he sent Brother Becan his picture postcard, plus several other picture postcards, dated February 2, 1916; January 10, 1916; and several other undated cards. It is not known what Dominick did while in Trinity. Brother Becan and Dominick became acquainted by mail only, through the “Czech Postcard Club” (CPK - Cesky pohlednicky klub), and he always signed his card as “No. 156 - CPK.” This correspondence club was conducted by the Czech daily Denni Svornost in Chicago, which has long since ceased to publish. The club was in existence about three years, from 1914 until World War I was declared. Brother Becan collected about 2,000 postcards and about 100 picture postcards as a result of correspondence in this club. One of those came from Dominick Napalac, Box 144, Trinity, Texas. Dominick Naplava would be celebrating his 73rd birthday this coming January 11, 1965. We, in America and the Free World, owe much to people like Dominick Naplava and the thousands like him who gave the maximum for their country.

Editor’s Note: According to http://lestweforget.vpweb.be, on November 11, 2014, a special ceremony took place in the Military History Museum in Prague, Czech Republic - the unveiling of the original Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) headstone commemorating Dominick Naplava. When Pioneer Naplava was killed on November 12, 1917, his grave lost in the later battles. Naplava’s memorial headstone in Tyne Cot CWGC cemetery near Ypres was marked for replacement by the CWGC in 2014. Lest We Forget Battlefield Tours-Flanders owner Milena Kolaříková noticed it and saw the chance of acquiring this symbolic patriotic headstone for the Czech Republic. She approached the CWGC as well as the Military History Institute and Military Museum in Prague. Finally, a permission was granted by the director of the CWGC to loan this particular headstone to the Military Museum in Prague - the only museum in the world which exhibits a CWGC headstone with the name of a fallen soldier. After almost a century, Dominick symbolically returned home.

In this country, the number 13 is considered to be an unlucky number and Friday the 13th - pátek třináctého is regarded by some people as an exceptionally unlucky day. There is also a Czech expression třináctá komnata “the 13th chamber.” Often appearing in fairy tales, it is a chamber which is not supposed to be opened because that’s where the darkest secrets are kept. In common speech, it stands for everything dark and secret, which we don’t want to reveal a bit like the proverbial skeleton in the cupboard. The number 14 - čtrnáct - is most often used in Czech in the expression čtrnáct dní meaning two weeks or a fortnight. Czechs will much more often say čtrnáct dní than dva týdny - two weeks. Czechs who are learning English can be very easily spotted because they will use the words “fourteen days” in English, too. The number 15 - patnáct is the age of consent in the Czech Republic and the age of criminal responsibility. Next, 16 - šestnáct used to be the legal age to buy cigarettes, but has been raised to 18. The number 17 - sedmnáct - can still be heard very often as part of the phrase “November 17th” - sedmnáctý listopad - which was the day the Velvet Revolution started in 1989 when the police bru-

At 18 years of age, v osmnácti letech, one can get a driver’s license, drink alcohol legally, go to the polls, get married without parental consent and so on. And 19 is devatenáct. There are no remarkable phrases using that word on its own, but it’s used to denote years in the 20th century. We already mentioned the year 1989. The more common way to say that in Czech is devatenáct set osmdesát devět - that is “nineteen hundred and eighty-nine.” However, when counting objects, the figure would read tisíc devět set osmdesát devět - “one thousand nine hundred and eightynine.” And that’s it. We’ll be back with more Czech numbers. Till then - na shledanou.

Are you a streaker, a stroller, or a studier? Czech Heritage Museum announces new membership opportunities
By Susan Chandler Executive Director Czech Heritage Museum
How do you like to tour a museum? Most people fall into one of three types: streakers, strollers, and studiers. Streakers like an overview. They zoom through the exhibits, find something that interests them to read and then hurry on, ready to get to the next adventure. Strollers go to museums to relax. They leisurely walk through the displays, stop now and then for a closer look and finish the tour as contented as a zen master. Studiers are hungry for knowledge and afraid of missing any opportunity to learn something new. They read every word of every text and study artifacts closely,
often analyzing, comparing and contrasting, or fitting a new fact into their own understanding of the world like a lost piece in a jigsaw puzzle. I was the studier type until I found that with four children of widely varying ages, I had to learn to be a streaker and hope to come back some day for a more in-depth tour. Now, I find myself doing internet searches on my cell phone while in a museum because I want to know more about an artifact or historical event. But, if time constrains, I still streak through to get an overview and then research things at home before I go back. If you’re a museum lover like me, an annual membership is just the ticket. The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center is offering an exciting
