Good morning from Camp Kubena! Executive Director Rob Clift captured this beautiful sunrise recently at camp. Camp staff are preparing for the 2021 camping season. The next project will be renovating an existing building into a maintenance barn. Stay tuned for more camp news!

With the new swimming pools in the background at Lodge 88, Houston, Amie and Alex D’Ambrosio and daughter Stella are pictured by the tree that they planted on Saturday, January 30 during the lodge’s tree planting day. More than 200 people assisted with the project to beautify the lodge grounds and plant 55 trees. More on page 7.

Editor’s Note

Happy Valentine’s Day! Happy Valentine’s Day to our dear Věstník readers! Thanks to our readers who reached out and said they enjoyed the editorial in the January 25 Věstník. I know our lodges, youth clubs, and members are constantly searching for ways to show appreciation. Here’s another idea that can make a difference to “heroes” in your local community on Valentine’s Day or any day. Appreciation bags are small, meaningful tokens of thanks for nurses, first responders, and caregivers. This can also be a great family project, too, if your lodge or youth club members cannot get together. Create a shopping list of items that you would like to include in your appreciation bags. Here’s an example: Gatorade Small box or bag of tissues Lip balm Pens/small tablet Crackers/pretzels/cookies Granola bar Hand sanitizer Instant coffee/hot cocoa packet(s) or powdered drink packet(s) Mints/gum Hard candy/other candy To pack up each bag, you will need bags with handles, ribbon, and cardstock for tags. Prior to assembling the bags, you may wish to decorate them with fun cutouts or stickers. To assemble the bags, open and line them up on your table. Then distribute the items among the bags.

Pinterest has many ideas for different wordings for the tags. Here’s a sample for a police appreciation bag: Thank you for all you do! Our definition of a hero is someone who protects our world and continues to make it a better place, despite having to see its darkest aspects every day. Our hero courageously puts on his or her badge every day and sacrifices more daily than most do in an entire lifetime. We see you, we appreciate you, and you truly are a hero! Feel free to get creative with the tags! (The tags, of course, can be printed and cut in advance of the bag assembly.) Use a single hole punch at the top of the tag. Slip a ribbon through the tag and tie it to your bag. Now gather your bags and arrange for safe distribution.

Dear Members and Readers, The rebuilt SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville has been reopened for event bookings after a fire destroyed the previous building on July 16, 2019. We are accepting booking for weddings, sweet sixteens, showers, business meetings, reunions, graduation parties, and most other events upon approval of hall management. The capacity at this time is 300 but will be dependent on the COVID-19 regulations in place at the time of the event. Since COVID-19 has had an impact on all of us, we have developed special pricing for the year 2021. Please contact Bonnie Urbanek at 512-739-9324 or send an email to spjst48@gmail.com to discuss pricing and availability. This has been a long journey to actually see our vision of a new facility come to realization. You will see a modern look while incorporating many of the usable items from the destroyed building within the decor. There are still some final touches to the premises that are being addressed. We would appreciate any donations towards this endeavor, and anyone interested can contact Bonnie Urbanek.

Lodge 88, Houston: successful Tree Planting Day Eighty-eight trees were delivered to Lodge 88, Houston, and 55 were planted at the lodge. Nine were donated to our friends at TSA. Twenty-four trees were given away to members. Twenty yards of mulch and five yards of compost were also delivered. One dump truck got severely stuck in the mud. And more than 200 people stopped by to make their mark on our lodge that will grow and grow over decades. A special thanks to Apache Corporation for their generous tree grant. Additional thanks to Amie D’Ambrosio, Matt Johnson, and Laura Rigamonti for organizing an incredibly successful day and creating the layout for the trees. Thanks to the 55 families who came out and planted trees around the lodge that

Monday, February 8, 2021 they will watch grow over the years. After tree planting, many people stayed to help wherever else they were needed. Sincere thanks to all of the people who missed out on the sign-up for a tree and still showed up to help move mulch, clean flower beds, or just generally chip in wherever they could. That’s what our lodge has been and will always be about. Next Member Event Everyone’s participation at the tree planting got us a little inspired. Your willingness to jump in and do some good was felt. However, we are somewhat limited for health and safety reasons, so outdoor events are the best play for us for the time being. We are working out the details, but you can expect something like a “Member Beer Garden” on Sunday, February 28 benefiting the Houston Food Bank. There is an incredible amount of help we can provide . . . and we should. Next Meeting—February 15 The members’ meeting is Monday, February 15 at 7 p.m. In person and virtual options will be available. Fraternally, Aaron Rigamonti, President —SPJST—

We are overcome by negativity nothing but bad news all around us which leaves us feeling helpless unable to control our own lives bad news so foreign and contrary to what we believe we wonder if we are declining and wonder if we will ever be safe again still there are those few souls who remain optimistic who go about their lives with goodness in mind who are never distraught or defeated so while the world tests negative those who spread kindness remain unaffected and are asymptomatic to negativity they are the antithesis of a virus in that they infect goodness not harm we should demand more of that kind of protective positivity let it spread worldwide and pray there will be no vaccine to stop it. —SPJST—

2020 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance Fourth Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the January to December 2020 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2020 youth year. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from January to December 2020. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities. What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district, and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards. Contest Dates January 1 to December 31, 2020 Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten or Age 5 to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 Years to High School Senior Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Fraternal Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Fraternal Director, may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Fraternal Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest.

Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Fraternal Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal. Merit Point Awards Awards are presented on the district and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through third place awards to top qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The top three junior and teen youth club members with the most points in each district will receive awards. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first through third places will receive the award. A youth may only receive the state award once in the age division. State Teen and State Junior awards are presented at State YAD. District Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place - $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the

current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The 2020 youth year began January 1 and ends December 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school. Dist Ldg Name Pts Mtgs

Frank J. Fojt, III, age 80, of Snook, Texas, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020. A celebration of life was held on Sunday, January 17, 2021, at 2:30 p.m. at Snook Brethren Church. Frank J. Fojt, III was born to parents Frank J. Fojt, Jr. and Milady (Gerzik) Fojt on March 6, 1940, in Wilcox, Texas, on a small family farm. His Frank Fojt, III family then relocated to Snook where Frank continued to live and raise his family. During his childhood, he developed passions for agriculture, hunting, and fishing. He continued pursuing those passions into adulthood, earning a bachelor’s degree in poultry science from Texas A&M University - Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of ’64. After graduation, he served the United States, standing ready to fight for his country in Vietnam, if called upon. He retired from TAMU after his career of 36 years as an agriculture technician in the Soil and Crop Sciences Department. “Little Frankie,” as referred to by many in his hometown, loved family, the simple country lifestyle, farming, and ranching. Any conversation with him included a story about hunting or fishing, raising crops, genetics, family get-togethers, loving Jesus, telling a joke, or about a prank he pulled in his younger years. All who knew him, knew he was never short on words, jokes, or stories. He also loved teaching and preparing the next generation. We, as his family, will always have memories of him as the most patient, kind, generous, and funny dad and grandpa. Frank was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Allen Fojt of Houston; and grandchild Garrett Fojt. He is survived by daughter Rebecca McCarty of College Station; sons Patrick Fojt of Snook and Chris Fojt of Navasota; grandchildren Kendell, Jaycee,

Wyatt, and Reid Fojt, and Hannah, Madelynn, and Carter McCarty; greatgrandchildren Chloe and Baylee Price; sister and brother-in-law Bonnie and Jim Williams of Ruidoso, New Mexico; sister-in-law Peggy Fojt of Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved and cherished. —SPJST—

In Memory of Pat Gunn Patricia Ann “Pat” Gunn entered the Kingdom of Heaven on January 12, 2021, after valiantly battling heart disease for many years. She was not expected to survive a six-month stay in the hospital in 2016. Not only did she survive, she again thrived. She knew that God was not yet finished with her service. Funeral service Pat Gunn was Saturday, January 16 at 11 a.m. at Cross Church on Birdcreek with Reverends Randy Holtzclaw and Tim Chaplin with burial following at Greathouse Cemetery. Visitation was Friday, January 15 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Patricia was born on April 15, 1938, in Alice, Texas, to William George Sodek and Elsie Olga Novosad Sodek; she was an only child. Her parents returned to Temple when she was six weeks old, and she lived out her remaining days in Temple. Pat graduated from Temple High School in 1956. She made many lifelong friends while in school, and she continued to meet with a group of them on a monthly basis until she was no longer able. Pat met the love of her life, Lawrence Ed Gunn, while in high school, and they were married on June 1, 1957. Their love and dedication to each other during their 63-year marriage was an inspiration to many. If the Temple Wildcats were playing football, Pat and Lawrence were there. Pat and Lawrence welcomed their only daughter, Karen Renea, on May 20, 1960, and their only son, Mark Kevin, on May 12, 1963. She loved her children dearly, and she was their rock.

19

Pat worked as a dental assistant and credit consultant for several dental practices in Temple. She took time off to raise her children then returned to work, retiring on July 18, 2000. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 87, Temple. She was also a longtime member of Heights Baptist Church where she was honored to serve as the first woman Sunday School Director. Later in life, she enjoyed attending Temple Bible Church and Cross Church on Birdcreek; she was grateful for the wonderful friendships she made in the Buck’s Bunch Bible study group. She had a tremendous faith in God and used every opportunity to share the good news of Jesus and eternal life. Pat and Lawrence loved to travel, especially to the mountains, and they always included the kids. One of Pat’s greatest joys was traveling to Ouray, Colorado, every fall to see the leaves change. During these trips, they made many wonderful friends who always held a special place in her heart. Pat loved to write and send cards. If you were a friend of hers, then you surely received many cards. Her “card ministry” brought her a special peace during her final year when she was no longer able to engage in the other activities she enjoyed. She will forever live in our hearts, and we are grateful for the legacy she has left. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by grandchildren Aspen Wold and Blaise (Amber) Schiller, whom she adored. In this last year, she was blessed by the arrival of precious great-granddaughter Kensli Grace Schiller. Memorials may be made to Cross Church on Birdcreek, 2202 Birdcreek Drive, Temple, Texas 76502. —SPJST—

As the first born in the family, she was tough and a tomboy who wasn’t afraid to work hard or get her hands dirty. She grew up in the area and attended Happy Hill School and Snook High School. Although she left school early, she was very proud to have earned her GED later in life. On July 3, 1948, she married the love of her life, Bennie Nathan Hejl. They were married for 69 years prior to his passing in 2017. They worked side by side on the farm together working cattle; raising pigs, turkeys, and chickens; and performing other tasks like hay baling, hay hauling, cotton picking, and harvesting corn and maize. She also helped process post oak firewood for wood heaters and sold it in the local community. Emily’s childhood experience of learning to work the land was a benefit to her as she and Bennie maintained their ranch and farm. In 1980, Emily and Bennie started the H&H Ranch along with their two sons B.J. and Donnie. She worked alongside them until her last days, whether checking livestock, feeding, hay hauling, or bookkeeping. They raised a large garden and enjoyed the fruit of their hard work by canning their own produce and processing their own meat. Bennie and Emily were blessed with a daughter and three sons. Emily was a hard worker and was always finding a way to serve others and serve her community. Emily had a part in the first organization of the Snook 4H Club and was a leader of the club. She also helped the organization of the Tunis Water System and served as director. She was involved in many other community organizations including man-

VĚSTNÍK agers of the SPJST Lodge 9, Snook Hall in Snook, Burleson County Fair Association, and active supporters of Snook VFD. Emily was an excellent cook and enjoyed sharing her gift of pastries with others. She also won awards several times at Kolache Festival. She baked many kolaches and pastries over the years, and she was known for gifting them to her doctors and office staff as a thank you for her care. She made mouth-watering cheese braid breads to donate for local charities and auctions. For many years, Emily was a consistent supporter helping put on the Men’s Brotherhood Harvest Meal at New Tabor Brethren Church and other events. Emily was very strong in her Christian faith, and she always faithfully attended and contributed to her church. In their earlier years of marriage, she and Bennie attended New Tabor Brethren Church, where she sang in the choir. Emily was the president and treasurer for the New Tabor Christian Sisters, served as an elder and church treasurer. In more recent years, Emily enjoyed attending Caldwell Brethren Church and Snook Brethren Church. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook. Above all, Emily loved her family and was always there to cheer on her kids and grandkids whether it be ball games, fair events, or other milestones in their lives. Emily was a caring and generous person who will be missed by many. Her hobbies were growing pot plants, watching and listening to polka shows, and sport events. She also liked shelling pecans and sharing them with her kids for baking. Emily is survived by children Bonnie Walker (late husband Randy), Ronnie (wife Ginger), B.J. (wife Nichole), and Donnie (wife Bonnie); grandkids Kristen Hejl Rietz (husband Zachary), Nathan Hejl and partner Steven Soares, Justin Hejl (wife Laine), Jessica Hejl, Jacob Hejl, Jordan Hejl (fiancee Preslie Hale), Sarah Hejl (fiance Trace Choate), Randa Walker Vajdak, and Erin Walker; six great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren; brother John Orsag (wife Betty); and brother-in-law Jesse Floeck, III. Emily was preceded in death by husband Bennie; son-in-law Randy Walker; and sister Joyce Orsag Floeck. Please consider a memorial to Snook Brethren Church or Snook Brethren Christian Sisters. —SPJST—

In Memory of Raymond Klechka, Jr. Raymond Robert Klechka, Jr., 75, of Caldwell, Texas, was called home to the Lord on Monday, November 9, 2020. Mass of a Christian burial was recited at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 14 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Father Melvin Dornak officiated the services. Visitation was held at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home on Friday, Raymond Klechka, Jr. November 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 13. Raymond Robert Klechka, Jr. was born on Groundhog Day - February 2, 1945, in Houston, Texas, to parents Raymond and Ella Klechka, and the world has never been the same. Raymond talked of a time when his grandmother would sing “At the Spring Waltz” to him as a youth. When Raymond was 10, he delivered newspapers and worked at the local grocery store. These jobs taught Raymond some of his many lessons

VĚSTNÍK about the “school of hard knocks” and so began the business man. He was enlisted in the United States Army and was called the banker by his platoon; he would loan the guys $20 of his money and get $40 of their next check. Raymond bought a small plumbing company and hired a college graduate to run it. He sold it five years later for a million dollars. Raymond loved to tell stories of all the investments he made. Raymond and first wife Marie had two beautiful sons together, and he also had pleasure in raising his nieces and loved teaching them all the importance of making money and loving life. He enjoyed spending time with his kids and traveling to places. Raymond was very close to his mom, Ella. They would always take adventures to the mountains, to Mexico, and dancing in multiple dance halls. He was with his mom when he met Sharon Lee, who won over his heart. Raymond and Sharon spent the last 20 years living life to the fullest. Dancing the polka, traveling all over the world, but most of all, loving, teaching, and encouraging their nine grandchildren. He has two granddaughters - one born April 9 and one born on April 10 of the same year. They lived six hours apart, but there was nothing that was going to stop him from being there when they were born. After Krista was born, he hit the road for six hours to make it before Lois was born. All his kids know the love he had for them. Raymond has always been involved and active in the Catholic church. Religion is an important part of his life. Heaven gained a perfectly beautiful, Bohemian angel with Raymond. Raymond was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook. Raymond was preceded in death by parents Raymond Klechka, Sr. and Ella (Janac) Klechka; and brother Arnold Klechka. He is survived by loving wife Sharon Klechka; brother Jimmy Klechka; children Raymond Klechka, III, Kenny and Sherry Klechka, Tammy and Brian Easterwood, Elesha and Jody Adamek, George and Sheila Harrison, Kim and Jason Leyva, and Adam and Chris Farmer; grandchildren London Klechka, Lois Klechka, Sophia Klechka, Colin Easterwood, Krista Adamek, Elizabeth Adamek, Jaden Leyva, Alex Farmer, and Samantha Farmer. reer with the Texas Highway Department. There is a now-removed rest area in the middle of Interstate 10 just west of Brookshire that he is famous (within his family!) for designing. He was recruited to join the City of Houston Public Works Department when Houston Intercontinental (now George Bush International) Airport was in the planning stages. He worked on the design and building of the airport through completion. He ultimately transferred to the Department of Aviation, where he held various posts as assistant manager of IAH and manager of Hobby Airport. He was instrumental in bringing back Houston Hobby Airport from an essentially abandoned airport to a once again thriving commercial airport. When Bill retired, he and Effie pursued their love of travel. Trips to Europe inspired them both to learn about their heritage, he being of German and Swedish descent and she of Czech descent. They built a vacation home in the wine village of Hlohovec, South Moravia, in the Czech Republic, giving them a base for exploring, as well as a comfortable place for extended family to visit. Bill became an adopted Czech by choice. They had the idea to create an organization to showcase not only the historical achievements and heritage of Americans of Czech descent, but also offer and present the European culture of past and contemporary Czechs and Slovaks that is so rich in artistic accomplishments. The Czech Center Museum Houston was incorporated on March 8, 1996, as a non-profit educational and cultural organization, made up entirely of volunteers. Initial office and retail space were established in the Northwest Mall. Over the subsequent years, Bill and Effie worked tirelessly to help bring forth a permanent home to showcase the best of Czech heritage. Monetary support from more than 6,000 individuals, with assistance from local as well as national and international sources eventually culminated in the current Czech Center Museum Houston, which was completed in September 2004 in Houston’s Museum District. The outpouring of support for the center has enabled Czech language classes, scholarship awards, dinners, programs, and events to take place in the Czech Center. The organization was recognized by the Czech government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a prestigious Gratia Agit award for its work in the furthering of and advocacy of a Civil Society in the

VĚSTNÍK Czech Republic and for increasing knowledge of the impact those of Czech heritage have made here in their new homeland. Bill and Effie were presented an award by Houston Business Alliance for a significant asset to the City of Houston in building the unique Baroque architecture building in the Museum District, and they were also honored with the 2019 Civil Society Vision Award by American Friends of the Czech Republic. Bill was a charter member of SPJST Lodge 232, Houston Midtown. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Effie; his sister Dorothy Moore; and his son-in law Eric Johnson. He is survived by daughters Sherry Pierce and husband Lindsey, Cathy Anderson and husband Larry, and Christie Johnson; grandchildren Sarah Pierce, Matthew Anderson, Christopher Anderson and wife Mary, Rory Johnson and wife Alexis, and Eric Johnson, Jr.; cousins, nieces, and nephews and numerous friends both in the United States and in the Czech Republic. —SPJST—

In Memory of Deloris Wolbrueck Deloris Jean Wolbrueck of Taylor, Texas, entered peacefully into her eternal rest on January 4, 2021, at a Bartlett nursing home where she had resided for more than a year. She was 87. An open viewing was held at Condra Funeral Home on Monday, January 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A memorial was scheduled for a later date. She was born Deloris Jean Simcik to John A. and Emma Kotrla Simcik at the family home in the shadow of what is Deloris Wolbrueck now Christ Lutheran Church in Noack on May 25, 1933. Deloris stated that she was the only one of her siblings not born in a hospital. As a child, she attended school in Hare. She married Edward Wolbrueck Jr. on Valentine’s Day in 1953, and that union lasted almost 59 years until Edward’s death in 2012. To that union were born James Edward, David John, and Susan Jean. Like many women of her generation, Deloris was a master of the domestic arts, including housecleaning, canning,

cooking, baking, and gardening. However, having grown up with four brothers, she adamantly refused to iron blue jeans. She was quite proud of her Czech heritage and could still speak the language. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville since 1949. She liked polka music, especially the Vrazels Polka Band. While no one in the family can recall Deloris reading a book in its entirety, she was a voracious reader of magazines, newspapers, and the ticker on television news—a habit that greatly advanced her knowledge. Her collection of cookbooks is voluminous. On rides through the country, she could also recall every farm’s owner when she was younger. Deloris’ baking and gardening skills brought her countless awards at events such as the Taylor Independence Festival, Williamson and Bell County Pecan Shows, and Austin Statesman’s annual cooking and baking contest. The family will always fondly remember her dill pickles and cottage cheese pie. She was equally talented in the greenhouse, where she never met a plant she couldn’t make grow and flourish. She also had an unrivaled fondness for preserving everything in plastic bags and the prodigious use of weed killer. Deloris and Edward were avid garage sale and auction-goers for decades. It was Deloris who claimed to be the inspiration behind Taylor’s first-ever garage sale. An acquaintance recently described her as “feisty;” a description that leaves little room for argument. Deloris was preceded in death by her parents; husband Edward; and brothers Raymond (killed in action in World War II), Clarence, Rubin, and Jerry. She is survived by children and their spouses James and Sandra Wolbrueck of Humble, David and Anna Wolbrueck of Round Rock, and Susan and Eddie Klingman of Manitou Springs, Colorado; grandchildren Kristel, Andrew (Emma), and Cody Wolbrueck and Devon and Lila Klingman; and greatgrandchildren Zane, Victoria, and Tobias Wolbrueck; brother-in-law John Wolbrueck; sister-in-law Cherri Wolbrueck; and a host of nieces and nephews. —SPJST—

TCGS introduces its 2021 egg collection Easter in the Czech Republic is a fun time! The celebrations are very cheerful and lighthearted and last for several days. The villages and different regions usually have their own Easter traditions and customs, all relating to spring and the beginning of new life. Decorated eggs, also known as “Kralice,” are mentioned as early as the 14th century in Bohemian and Moravian literature. The hand-painted real eggs are still made there. The decorations can be quite elaborate, requiring skill and patience to decorate them using bee’s wax, straw, watercolors, onion peels, and picture stickers. The most common designs are probably geometrical patterns, but you will also find flowers, leaves, and other subjects in a myriad of colors as well as many other eggs made by a variety of decorating methods.

Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) is happy to introduce its egg collection for 2021. While we have a supply of the hand-painted eggs from Moravia, we also have a beautiful selection of exquisite, beautiful glass eggs which are handmade in the Czech Republic. These eggs are designed with the same type of geometrics and flowers that are painted on the real eggs, but they are hand blown and hand-painted ensuring that no two eggs are identical. If you have not already begun a collection of eggs, we encourage you to consider starting a new tradition of gifting eggs to your loved ones on Easter. This is a gift that they can enjoy right away and then enjoy again during the Christmas season by placing them on their Christmas trees. We offer 12 different selections, which we will be happy to ship to you in time for Easter giving. A gift box for each egg will be included Please contact Nancy Machu at www.nbmachu@gmail.com or call 512971-4284 to place your order or for questions or comments. Shipping charges will be added to the price of the egg, depending on the number of eggs ordered. Please leave a short message for a return telephone call as anonymous calls without messages are not answered or returned. Fraternally, Nancy Machu Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—

NCSML to host virtual presentation with Stephen J. Sebesta Join the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2021, for a free virtual presentation led by Dr. Stephen J. Sebesta, author of “The Settlement, Growth and Movement of Czechs and their Institutions in Cleveland, Ohio.” Highlighted with photos, maps and graphics, this book reviews the history of the Bohemians, Moravians, and Silesians in Europe, collectively known as the Czechs, and the forces that led them to emigrate. It traces immigration patterns of the Czechs in the U.S., giving detailed descriptions of the Czech settlements in Cleveland, Ohio, which, in 1910, had the fourth largest population of Czech-born inhabitants in the world. Sebesta’s research includes information about the Catholic and Protestant churches, the Jewish immigrants, freethinker organizations and the Sokols, as well other Czech organizations. He touches on Czech music and drama societies, summarizes the history of Czech fraternalism, newspapers, radio broadcasting, and breweries. The book also provides a history of the Cleveland Czechoslovak Legionnaires who fought in WWI and those in Cleveland who

provided foreign relief in support of the struggle to form the new country of Czechoslovakia. Anthony Avina of Pacific Book Review calls Sebesta’s book “ . . . a mustread for any history buffs out there and those interested in Czech culture overall.” Sebesta was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and raised in the predominantly Czech Mt. Pleasant neighborhood. He has served as President of the Cleveland Chapter of the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU) and as a Vice President of Sokol Greater Cleveland at Bohemian National Hall. He has lectured on the subjects of the Czechs in Cleveland and the Cleveland Czech Legionnaires throughout the U.S., as well as in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He’s also the author of “The Wartime Experiences of A Cleveland Czechoslovak Legionnaire.” The virtual program is free to attend, but participants must RSVP to receive the Zoom link. Registrants have the option of purchasing a copy of “The Settlement, Growth and Movement of Czechs and their Institutions in Cleveland, Ohio” from the Museum Store for $16.99. Those who do will receive a signed bookplate from Sebesta and a free copy of “Cleveland Czechs” by John T. Sabol and Lisa A. Alzo. This package is valued at $39.98. There are limited quantities of the

bookplates and “Cleveland Czechs.” Interested parties are encouraged to make their purchase early. As an added incentive, Sebesta will send a free digital copy of his book to the person who RSVPs for the program furthest away from Cedar Rapids.
