Wharton farmer sees best corn yields in state Editor’s Note: Thanks to El Campo Leader-News for permission to reprint this article. Keith and Sara Kresta and their children Andrew, Lauren, and Emily are all members of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton. By Emily Lincke El Campo Leader-News March 20, 2021 Reprinted with permission A Wharton County farmer produced the best corn yields in the state last year, putting him in first place for the National Corn Growers Association’s 2020 yield contest. Keith Kresta of Wharton earned the top spot for the Conventional Non-Irrigated category of NCGA’s annual National Corn Yield Contest with yields of 236.9 bushels per acre during the latest

Keith Kresta, pictured above, produced the highest corn yields in the state during the 2020 growing season, according to the National Corn Growers Association’s annual yield contest. Kresta used a hybrid seed and lots of hard work to produce about 237 bushels of corn per acre, earning him first place in Texas for the Conventional Non-Irrigated contest category. harvest season. He used a yellow food corn hybrid seed from seed supply company Pioneer. “Pushing the yield envelope is an exciting challenge,” Kresta said. “Strict adherence to the basic agronomic principles of crop production is key. Soil management, soil fertility programs, and hybrid selection are the top factors.” Kresta was one of 506 state winners out of 7,844 producers who entered the contest nationwide. Entries from 48 states were submitted, with national winners being selected from 12 states. Kresta’s farm is a family run operation. His passion for agriculture developed from working with his father and brothers in the fields as a kid, Kresta told the newspaper. As an adult, Kresta and his wife, Sara, aim to teach the same work ethic to their three children. “I am fortunate to work with a dedicated team and equally important, a very understanding wife when it comes to the Continued on Page 2.

The projected US yield average for corn in 2020 was 175 bushels per acre, according to NCGA, making Kresta’s yields 35 percent higher than the projected national average. Texas’ runners-up are Chet Zdunkewicz of Needville and Justin Hansen of Lorena who produced 235.2 and 234.5 bushels per acre, respectively. Of the state winners, 27 won national titles, with the national winners’ average hitting 346 bushels per acre and the highest entry producing 476.9 bushels per acre. “With all the negatives from last year, we were very fortunate to have an excellent corn growing season along the Gulf Coast,” Kresta said. “This was definitely needed for farmers and landowners considering the depressed commodity prices.”

Farmers participating in the contest submit information about their crop, including the yields, the variety of seed used and chemicals or minerals used to aid the production process. Contest data is used for agronomic research that will help address current obstacles in the industry, according to NCGA. “This valuable information helps farmers feed and fuel the world while preserving natural resources for Americans in rural and urban areas alike,” according to the NCGA press release. This year’s contest showed national winners planted more seeds per acre than other contest entrants, with an average of 38,425 seeds per acre for winners and an average 34,163 per acre for other participants. More national winners applied trace minerals to their crop compared to others, with 23 percent of winners utilizing this technique versus 19 percent of all entrants. The first NCYC was held in 1965. At the time, the average national corn yield was about 65 bushels per acre, and the highest contest entry was 218.9 bushels per acre, according to NCGA. —SPJST—

VĚSTNÍK

SPJST President Vanicek shares message to members Dear Brothers and Sisters, Throughout its history, SPJST has built a good reputation of being there for its members and for their communities in the most critical times. The unprecedented year of 2020 was no exception. Actions taken during this global crisis enabled us to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on operations and provide uninterrupted service as an essential service provider. Foremost, I am filled with gratitude for our members and for their continued interest and support of our Society. Correspondingly, my sincere thanks to SPJST employees for their commitment, professionalism, and solidarity during this challenging period. The great silver lining of 2020 was that trying conditions prompted SPJST to accelerate its digital and technological capabilities on multiple fronts. We continue to build on these advances and remain well-positioned to make a positive difference in the lives of our members. Looking back on the past two decades, SPJST has weathered some unprecedented challenges but they have not stopped us from accomplishing some extraordinary things. Here, I must express my appreciation to the members of SPJST Supreme Lodge for their loyalty, support, and for the determination and leadership that they have demonstrated in correcting the procedural inadequacies of the past and investing in technological solutions for the future. Already, as a result of the actions taken in 2019 and 2020, the diversity and value of SPJST investment portfolio has been enhanced, which enabled the Supreme Lodge to increase annuity rates in the third quarter of 2000. The stark reality is that the corrective measures and the investments in the future have come at a cost. Three years of progressive actions have resulted in three years of negative net income for the Society, overshadowing, perhaps, the seven years of progress which preceded them, leading to SPJST’s strong balance sheet, high credit quality, liquidity, and low lapse ratio of insurance sales. In 2020, SPJST posted total income of $22.19 million. That compares favorably to the $23.59 million recorded in the prior year. SPJST’s cash disbursements – which represent a combination of life and annuity benefits, additions to reserves and operating expenses – was $24.67 million for 2020. As a result,

SPJST posted a negative net income of $2.48 million for 2020. Two significant factors which contributed to the negative net income in 2020 were increased death claims and pending claims which were reserved for in 2020. Of our death claims last year, 30 were attributed to COVID19. SPJST’s life insurance and annuity sales declined in 2020. A total of 665 certificates were issued for insurance totaling $35.661 million in 2020. This compares with the 1,100 certificates issued in 2019 totaling $68.898 million. SPJST’s member certificate base consisted of 43,048 certificates at year-end 2020, down from the 43,754 certificates in force at year-end 2019. Total insurance and annuities in force at year-end 2020 was $1.117 billion, down from the $1.135 billion recorded at year-end 2019. Over the same period unallocated surplus declined from $16.27 million at year-end 2019 to $13.38 million at year-end 2020. Certainly, all of us look forward to putting COVID-19 and the year 2020 behind us. Even so, that does not signal a return to the old ways of doing things – and certainly not from the business perspective. We are standing at the beginning of a new and rebuilding chapter in the history of our fraternal order. And when I say, “we” I mean all of us – from our newly minted members to our longtime lodge leaders and volunteers to SPJST Home Office personnel, management team and Supreme Lodge. Effectively serving the insurance needs of our existing members and their extended families with high quality life insurance remains a key component of SPJST’s invigorated efforts to achieve new growth in 2021 and beyond. SPJST’s business development emphasis is on achieving sustainable, year-overyear growth that is aligned with the mission of the Society. Additional growth is planned by expanding existing distribution channels within our traditional markets as well as in those geographic areas where SPJST enjoys good name recognition and a strong fraternal presence. It is important to reiterate that SPJST and its insurance and annuity business – here and now – remains healthy and well capitalized. The net loss in income that occurred as a result of business actions has no direct impact on SPJST certificate holders. SPJST – like all fraternal and commercial life insurance companies –

is closely regulated and its reserves are protected with assets to meet certificate holder obligations. We simply want to be the best that we can be. On the fraternal front, our watchword is “relevancy” – doing those things that bring meaning and substance to SPJST’s fraternal mission. The prescription for relevancy in the Supreme Lodge and in our local lodges is strategic planning – making a conscious effort to routinely address what we and our society are doing to deliver redeeming value to our members and to society. Here at the Home Office, we are pursuing ways of achieving operating efficiencies as we also consider ways to

remain a strong and dynamic fraternal benefit society. It’s an exciting time. Together we have tackled many of the legacy challenges that were facing SPJST. As a result, we are a de-risked fraternal organization with a strong balance sheet, highly-rated investment portfolio and a diverse platform of insurance and annuity products and non-contractual benefits. Your trust and confidence in SPJST is appreciated and well placed. Thank you for your kind attention. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek SPJST President —SPJST—

Lodge 88, Houston: April is a big month Happy April, everyone! This won’t be a particularly short note as we have many activities returning to Lodge 88, Houston in April. Easter Egg Hunt Success First off, thanks to everyone who chipped in to make the Easter egg hunt such a success. More than 170 people registered. It was a beautiful morning, and fun was had by all. Special thanks to Angela Curley for running point on the event, everyone who volunteered on Friday night to stuff eggs, and those who showed up early on Saturday to hide them. Bingo is Back! Community health numbers are finally back to a level where we felt safe opening bingo back up to the public. Starting on Thursday, April 8, bingo will be open at 50 percent capacity. If we keep seeing trends head in the right direction, hopefully, we can expand that number soon. Thanks to everyone who has been patient as we bring back this foundational Lodge 88 event.

Camp Lodge 88 Starting June 14! There are still some slots left for Camp Lodge 88. Register at https://kidventure.com/camp-lodge-88/ Help Needed . . . There are a couple of targeted places where we could use some active assistance around Lodge 88. We hope you will consider lending a helping hand. Lifeguards Wanted Last week, the pool was officially handed over to our pool management company which is beyond exciting. We are anxious to get the Swim Club opened up to everyone as fast as possible, and the most notable thing we need at this point are lifeguards. If you know someone or a group of people who are interested in becoming lifeguards at Lodge 88 this summer, please have them email swim@lodge88.org.

front of the gazebo. Many of our members have great stories to tell about Lodge 88. I invite you to volunteer to share a story about the lodge’s past with our members. It could be about an artifact at the lodge, activities that occurred, or anything of the sort. If you are interested, please email me at aaron.rigamonti@gmail.com with the topic you would like to share. We would like to have one of these each month. The Pokrok* Project (*it means progress) If you were at the meeting, you also heard about the board launching “The Pokrok Project.” We would like a small group to develop a long term plan for activities and facilities at the lodge. After soliciting input from members in whatever methods are appropriate, create site plans, schedules, budgetary costs, and some theoretical order of implementation. None of this would need to be immediately actionable, but it would allow us to plan. This committee would report to the board of trustees. If you are interested in serving on this committee, again, please send an email to aaron.rigamonti@gmail.com. The board would like to get this work started as soon as possible.

Marketing Committee Help We’re looking for a handful of volunteers to help us with marketing initiatives over the next few months to truly enhance the lodge’s presence in the community. Email erin.rife14@gmail.com. Duties include revamping the website to ensure it’s a valuable resource to current members, potential members, and visitors; reviewing all the content on the website—edit, enhance, spruce it up, etc.; researching and gathering information to enhance information around membership at the lodge, renting the space, and events. We hope everyone enjoyed their Easter break. We hope to see each of you at the lodge in April. In the near future, we hope to have full capacity bingo, the return of dances, the Swim Club open, and maybe even get the Blue Room back up and active. It’s basically what we have all been waiting for. Pokrok, Aaron Rigamonti, President —SPJST—

mám - I have máš - you have má - he/she/it has

Plural máme - we have máte - you have mají - they have 2. The Noun in Czech All Czech nouns are classified as being either masculine, feminine, or neuter. Therefore, the noun “park” is masculine; “lampa” is feminine; and “okno” is neuter. 3. The Demonstrative Adjectives The demonstrative adjective “that” is translated in Czech by ten, ta, to. Ten is always used with masculine nouns; ta with feminine nouns; and to with neuter nouns. S

Read the following verse; see if you can translate it: Babička Alenka a Jiřík si hráli s míčem. Kolem šla stará babička. Náhle upadla. Jiřík podal Alence míč. Skočil a pomáhal babičce na nohy. Alenka čekala na Jiříka. Ptala se: “Kdo to byl? Tvá babička?” “Ne!” “Tak teta?” “Také ne!” “Nebo známá babička?” “Vůbec ne. Byla to cizí babička.” —SPJST—

Czech Heritage Museum to present The Pagan Queen April 15 in Belton The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center and The Beltonian Theatre will present two showings of the 2009 film The Pagan Queen on Thursday, April 15, 2021, at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the historic Beltonian Theatre, located at 219 East Central, just off the courthouse square in Belton. The Pagan Queen tells the legend of Libuše, queen of Moravia and wife of Přemysl. It was Libuse who first envisioned the city of Prague to be built on the Vltava River and then saw it through to be built. Premysl the farmer founded the longest Czech dynasty, lasting 500 years. The film has English audio with Czech subtitles. The Pagan Queen is a beautifully dark film, but there is nudity and violence. If you prefer to see the story in opera form, an excellent performance of Czech composer Bedřich Smetana’s opera Libuše, at the National Theatre in Prague can be found on the homepage of the museum website at CzechHeritageMuseum.org. Czech Heritage Museum in Temple hosts “The Bonfire of Liberties” exhibit through April The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center’s temporary exhibit, “The Bonfire of Liberties: Censorship of the Humanities,” an exhibition by Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities will continue through April. This exhibit includes Czech themes on censorship such as Charter 77, the document Vaclav Havel wrote in 1977, protesting the arrest of the rock band “Plastic People of the Universe.” Easily understood books on Charter 77 are available for sale by the Museum. A video from the Library of Congress is available on the Museum’s home page which features Gábor Demszky, a Hungarian sociologist dedicated to the plight of the Roma, who was punished for signing Charter 77 by having his research license suspended. He continued his dissident writings and published them through the samizdat method of underground publication. He speaks on the topic of samizdat. “The Bonfire of Liberties” gives an overview of censorship in its various guises over time. It examines the struggle between those who want to censor difficult, controversial, and revolutionary material from sensitive viewers and those who want to protect the freedoms of all people to read, view, and think for themselves. The exhibit includes information on Venus of Dolní Věstonice, one of the oldest known ceramic articles in the world. The Venus was found near Brno, Moravia, and is dated to approximately 30,000 BCE. The Venus of Dolní Věstonice suffered censorship by an East Texas newspaper in the not-so-distant past. Susan Chandler Czech Heritage Museum Executive Director —SPJST—
