TCGS offers cookbook

The Kitchen is the Heart of Every Czech Home

Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) is pleased to announce its newest cookbook Cooking with Czech Recipes. Filled with time-treasured Czech recipes preserved from generation to generation to recipes served at Czech gatherings and family get-togethers, we know deciding which recipe to prepare first will be a hard decision.

You have read about cookbooks advertising recipes from soup to sandwiches. Within its 300-plus pages, Cooking with Czech Recipes contains recipes from appetizers to vegetables, with an added bonus of family tributes. Czech Heritage Museum; Beltonian Theatre present Miloš Forman film May 11

Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center and The Beltonian Theatre will present two showings of the 2009 film Miloš Forman: What Doesn’t Kill You on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. The films will be shown at the historic Beltonian Theatre, 219 East Central, Belton, Texas - just off the courthouse square in Belton.

Miloš Forman, What Doesn’t Kill You is an award-winning documentary about director Miloš Forman, who directed One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Amadeus, Hair, The People vs. Larry Flynt, Man on the Moon, and more. This film follows Forman as he returns to his home in the Czech Republic and explains how his experiences there informed his films. For example, in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, he saw the character of Nurse Ratched as communism. Rather than casting an older, harsher woman as was called for, he cast a woman who appeared tender and nurturing, which he felt characterized communism’s appeal as a caretaker masking the character’s “ratcheting” control of the patients, accruing in almost undetectable increments. Slavnost is May 16 at TCHCC in La Grange

Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC), located at 250 West Fairgrounds Road in La Grange, invites you to pay homage to spring with a family Sunday filled with music, food, laughter, and remembrance during the 19th Annual Slavnost - May Fest - on Sunday, May 16, 2021. Festivities begin with a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. paying tribute to all Czech-Texas Immigrants. If you would like to recognize Czech immigrants in your family, contact TCHCC for a recognition form. Your family will be named during the ceremony along with the presentation of a certificate. Forms are due by May 10. A delicious fried chicken dinner will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m. Plenty of Czech-style desserts will also be available, along with refreshing beverages of all kinds. There will be live music from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the deck of the main center by Mark Halata and Texavia. The day’s activities also include a traditional May pole dance at 1:30 p.m. and demonstrations at the Zapalač Saw Mill and Czech Newspaper Museum at 2 p.m. You’ll also have a chance to shop in the Country Store and the Kopecky Gift Shop where you’ll find unique gifts for dads, grads, newlyweds, and Christmas ornaments in stock year-round.

Have You Seen the Czech Village?

During Slavnost, tour the TCHCC Czech Village, which includes structures from the late 1800s and early 1900s depicting what life was like for Czech Texans back then. See the latest additions – the Czech Newspaper Museum and SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad. The village also features houses from the Kalich, Hoelscher, Migl, and Hluchanek-Salas families. The Hoelscher Haus is home to the Polka Lovers Club of Texas Museum, and the Kalich house serves as the Czech Music Museum of Texas. The village also includes the Hospoda (Tavern) and General Store, Zapalač Saw Mill, Janak Barn and Texas Czech Agriculture Museum, and a double log crib.

The Fayette County Community Theatre will also be having their spring performance at the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater of Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily Friday, May 14 and Saturday evening, May 15 and a matinee on Sunday, May 16. This makes for a great weekend at our venues and gives time to visit the many sites in the La Grange area!

Czech Center Museum Houston invites all to May Fest on May 23

The Czech Center Museum Houston, also known as the Czech Cultural and Community Center, invites members and friends old and new to May Fest on Sunday, May 23, 2021, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

With the weather warming up, Czech Center Museum Houston (CCMH) wishes to share joy and bring people together to enjoy Czech culture, music, and food. At this complimentary festival, CCMH will be featuring Czech music, food, and beverages.

Diverse organizations from all parts of Texas and beyond are invited to come together to celebrate spring and new beginnings. May Fest will include a beer garden, live music from the Slavic Heritage Band, kolache eating contest, and Czech beer, sausage, and sauerkraut. Admission is free of charge. Very Into Polka!

SPJST is the proud sponsor of the King and Queen Dance Contest at the 2021 National Polka Festival in Ennis, Texas, on Friday evening, May 28 at 9 p.m. at KJT No. 35 Hall. The hall’s address is 1216 South Paris Street in Ennis. Since 1987, Johnnie I. and Margaret Krajca, have facilitated the annual National Polka Festival King and Queen Contest and this year will be one like no other. Dust off your dancing shoes and plan on competing this year. Couples should plan to register for the contest at the entrance of the KJT Hall before 8:30 p.m. A Czech costume or “fancy” dancing is not a requirement for the contest, but winners will need a Czech costume for the remainder of the weekend. The “Polka Princess” contest will be held. Contestants between the ages of 6 to 10 years old are eligible and must have their parents or guardian’s consent. Registration will be held at the entrance of the hall, and you must sign-up before 8:30 p.m. A Czech costume is required for the winner who will participate in the weekend festivities.
