Very Into Polka!  SPJST is proud to be one of the sponsors of this weekend’s National Polka Festival in Ennis, Texas. Held Memorial Day Weekend, the National Polka Festival will celebrate 54 years of Czech heritage and traditions Friday, May 28 through Sunday, May 30. The event offers an abundance of activities to be enjoyed by the entire family in a small town atmosphere. The festival kicks off with an opening dance on Friday featuring polka music and the King and Queen Dance Contest, where participants and nonparticipants are encouraged to wear traditional Czech kroj (costumes). SPJST is sponsoring the contest which will be held at 9 p.m. at KJT No. 35 Hall, 1216 South Paris Street. Since 1987, Johnnie I. and Margaret Krajca of Lodge 25, Ennis have facilitated the annual National Polka Festival King and Queen Contest. The “Polka Princess” contest will also be held for contestants between the ages of six to 10 years old. Registration will be held at the entrance of the hall, and contestants must sign up before 8:30 p.m. A Czech costume is required for the winner who will participate in the weekend festivities. On Saturday morning, decorated floats, bands, and colorful costumes kick off the downtown festivities with a giant parade that twists through historic downtown Ennis. Then experience traditions, religious customs, dancing, taste, sights, sounds, and “a little bit of the Czech Lands” on Saturday and Sunday at three spacious, air-conditioned halls (KJT, Sokol, and SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis) and in downtown Ennis. Enjoy a weekend of polka dancing

with 15 live polka bands including Grammy Award winning Brave Combo and a Saturday night country concert. Visit nationalpolkafestival.com for more festival details. Look for the signs at each of the halls - SPJST Lodge 25, KJT, and Sokol - and at the SPJST booth downtown to sign up to win a Pit Boss grill! (See photo on page 12.) More information is on page 11, and a map appears on page 12.   Congratulations, Graduates!       The Vestnik will honor graduates with a special “Senior Spotlight.” All SPJST high school or college seniors are encouraged to submit photographs and information that showcase them as a person and an accomplished graduate! Member expresses scholarship thanks Dear Mr. Vanicek and Members of SPJST, I am writing to thank you for generously awarding me the SPJST scholarship. To be selected as a recipient of your scholarship was incredible. This fall, I will be a freshman at Texas Tech University. By awarding me the SPJST scholarship, you have lightened my financial burden and allowed me to focus on the most important aspect of school - learning in order to obtain a great career and graduating with a degree. Thank you again for your support and financial contribution to achieving my goal. I promise to work hard in all of my classes and receive an ‘A’ letter grade in each of them. The donors’ investment is honored, and I hope to give back to the community in a similar form in the future. Sincerely, Thomas Carlile Lodge 54, West —SPJST—

Member submits recommendation to By-Law Committee In going through the proposed by-law changes this weekend, I noticed one that I feel needs to be modified. It is Article IX, Section 36, stating that the President is to be a voting member of the board of directors. His vote could serve to cause for motions being voted on to end in a 4/4 tie and that would cause the motion to fail. I do think that he should be the tie breaking vote if one would arise because

of an absent board member or from a member abstaining in a vote. It is not normal practice for a hired president to be a voting member of a board of directors, and in this case, it would put the president is a more powerful position than is appropriate. Thanks for your help and hard work in serving SPJST’s membership to make the needed change to the by-laws to improve the operations for this body. Attention SPJST Graduates

From the Desk of SPJST Vice President Delisle Doherty

It’s Your Life

Graduation may still look a little different this year . . . but we want to make it special by providing a

★ ★ ★ Senior Spotlight ★ ★ ★

Jack and Jill Went Up the Hill Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down and broke his crown, and Jill went tumbling after. When they got to the bottom, Jill fixed Jack’s wound, and they fell in love with each other. They got married, had kids and lived happily ever after . . . Or so they thought. Jill was a stayat-home mom while Jack brought home the bacon. When Jill died, Jack realized they never had insurance for her. Jack always had insurance, but never thought of insurance for her. After all, she was a stay-at-home mom. Now he has the extra cost of putting his kids in daycare so he can work. He has to hire someone to help him clean and cook. He is missing work to take the kids to the doctor. He didn’t realize the time it took for all the extracurricular activities. Band, sports, choir, plays . . . everything takes time and money. Within two years Jack had to change his job to accommodate his new life schedule. It doesn’t matter who brings home the bacon or who takes care of the kids, when one partner is lost, there is a tremendous cost to the survivor. When looking at life insurance for you and your spouse, you should include future costs. Know what your plans are. Are the kids going to be active in school? Do you plan on having your kids attend college? If that kid can’t attend college, their entire life just changed direction. What cost and lifestyle changes will need to be made if only one of you are around? Are the kids going to need to be put in daycare, or is a nanny going to be hired? All this needs to be considered. After all it is called “life insurance” — not death insurance. How do you continue to live?

and parents and grandparents of graduates!

All SPJST high school or college seniors are encouraged to submit photographs and information that showcase them as a person and an accomplished graduate! Each graduate will be featured in a special section of the Vestnik. To be included, please complete the following information and submit along with up to 4 photographs no later than May 31, to: Online - www.spjst.org/graduates Email - vestnik@spjst.org • Text - 254-534-0807

The Cost to Leave One Behind Think about everything you have done in life. What would have changed if you were alone to do it? A good daycare alone would be between $800 to $1,000 per month per child. Would the mortgage payments, car note, taxes, schooling, and groceries take away some of the vacations you had? Probably. College may be out the window. Extracurricular activities that you spent with your kids to help the grow their character? Probably not. Family nights out? Not anymore. If you knew you had to give all of this up, would you want to make sure you were protected? So why do we think $10,000 is enough? $10,000 might bury you or your spouse, but it sure would not bring back those things in life we enjoy. Under-insuring yourself guarantees your family will have to make choices on what to leave out of their lives. Do we want to put them in that situation? Would you want to be put in that situation? Need to review your insurance? Contact your SPJST Sales Agent or Regional General Agent (RGA) listed on page two of this week’s Vestnik, and they will be glad to help. I am always glad to answer any questions, too. All you have to do is call me at 832-2322049. My door is always open - figuratively and literally. —SPJST—

From the SPJST State Fraternal Director State Fraternal Director shares June updates June Fraternal Focus Hosted Live and You’re Invited Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek will host the next Fraternal Focus webcast on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at 7 p.m. The webcast is open to all SPJST members who register. Webcast topics vary from month to month. The lively webcast typically includes reports on select lodge happenings, organizational updates, and the “topic of the month.” As an added bonus, the names of two webcast attendees are drawn at the end of each show for prizes. It’s fun and informative. I encourage you to join in on the June presentation. This link will take you to the registration page: https://spjst.org/fraternalfocus/ or you can go to www.spjst.org; click on events in the upper menu of the website. After you register for the webcast, you will receive a confirmation email that you registered for the event. Please see the next Vestnik for more “topic of the month” information. SPJST District Annual Meeting Here are the scheduled 2021 district meetings. Thank you, district officers, for scheduling your meetings on the Sundays recommended by the Supreme Lodge. District One—Sunday, June 6 Lodge 9, Snook District Two—Sunday, June 13 Lodge 48, Beyersville District Three—To Be Announced District Five—Sunday, June 27 Lodge 81, Needville District Six—Sunday, June 13 Camp Kubena District Seven—Sunday, July 25, 2021 Jourdanton Community Center Flag Day—June 14 The week of June 13 to 19, 2021, is designated as “National Flag Week.” During National Flag Week, the President will issue a proclamation urging United States citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which

happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August 1949, an Act of Congress established National Flag Day. Please take a few moments on this date to pause and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag; and we encourage you to talk to your children, grandchildren, and friends about what the flag means to you. In these days we are living in, it’s important to remember that so many others have given their lives to secure our freedom so please participate in this national observance. Your lodge may want to join with a veterans organization in your community and be a part of the celebration. This would count as a service project/community outreach. SPJST Summer Camp Information Please know all campers must have finished kindergarten to high school senior to attend camp. For camp registration, go to the SPJST website and under programs, click on summer camp registration that will direct you to the CampDoc website to register, or click on this link: http://app.campdoc.com/register/spjst. • Youth members, this year you can invite a friend to camp! Yes, that’s right. Your friend or friends don’t have to be an

SPJST member to come to camp with you. They will have to pay $350 to attend. • If your child is a current youth club member and has made seven out of 12 meetings, SPJST will pick up the cost of camp. • Youth who attend lodges with no youth club can attend seven adult meetings and qualify for camp without paying. The lodge secretary will need to provide the Home Office with copies of the membership roster of each meeting the youth attended. • Youth who have not made at least seven meetings will be prorated $35 per meeting missed. Youth can make up a meeting by attending another local youth club. Please see your youth leader about this. • Parents and grandparents, please know your child or grandchild can attend camp this year for $250 — as long as they have a current SPJST life insurance certificate that is in force. • Parents and grandparents, if you have an in force certificate and your child or grandchild does not have one, he or she can still go to camp for $350. • Please contact me if you have any questions about attending SPJST Summer Camp.

2021 SPJST Camp Dates Leaders-In-Training (LIT)/Teen Camp Wednesday, June 23 to Sunday, June 27 Junior Camp Session One Wednesday, July 7 to Sunday, July 11 Districts Three, Four, Five, Seven Junior Camp Session Two Wednesday, July 14 to Sunday, July 18 Districts One, Two, Six Strategic Planning for Your Lodge SPJST recognizes the importance of fielding a fraternal program that is relevant and in touch with the lives of its members. Whereas some lodges are experiencing a resurgence in member participation, others have been less fortunate. There are reasons for this: While it is certainly possible for a lodge to experience a level of success without a plan, those lodges whose members have invested the time and resources into a mission and goals can look forward to achieving success at a much quicker pace. A great place to start is by conducting a simple - and fun - strategic planning session that helps to answer, “What is my lodge doing to make a positive difference for its members and for the community?” And with a little bit of advance notice, President Vanicek and I would love to lend a hand with the process. With just a little preparation, it is possible to conduct this three-step exercise in 60 to 90 minutes. In the end, the information that is collected can be useful in constructing a strategic plan for your lodge. It makes for a fast-paced and enjoyable program. Topics that don’t typically come up in your regular lodge meetings will be — the positives as well as the negatives — and then we talk about how to build on the positives and what we can do to eliminate the negatives. When we’re done, your lodge will be well on its way to moving forward with a clearly defined mission statement. If you’d like to have us come in and work with your lodge, please give Brian 254-534-2902 or me 254-534-0681 a call, and we’ll set it up. Fraternally, Frank Horak State Fraternal Director —SPJST—

District Two Annual Meeting Sunday, June 13 at Lodge 48, Beyersville

District Six Annual Meeting Sunday, June 13 at Camp Kubena

The annual business meeting of District Two will be held on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at the new SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville Hall. The address is 10450 FM 619 in Taylor, Texas. Directions are listed under Lodge 48’s information in the back of the Vestnik. Registration begins at 1 p.m. with the meeting following at 2 p.m. Be sure to register prior to 2 p.m. to be included in your lodge’s member count. Three auditors from three separate lodges will be appointed by the president to audit the district treasurer’s records, as well as the district youth club records prior to the business meeting. We will combine business with fun as there will be a silent auction, 50/50 prize drawing, guessing games, and a painted rock contest. Each lodge is asked to bring an item for the Silent auction. Business will include election of new officers. Current officers are wishing to “retire” and are hoping others will become more involved by serving as an officer. Be ready to nominate someone who is willing to serve and who is dedicated to maintaining the fraternal activities of SPJST. A meal with pork loin roast will be served by Lodge 48 following the close of the meeting. Cost is $3 per plate. What a bargain! We are hoping to see all lodges represented at the District Two meeting. Come and socialize with friends whom we have not seen in a year due to the Covid distancing. Members may wear masks if they feel uncomfortable in the crowd. Fraternally, Rita Spinn District Two President —SPJST—

I am all-electric, wired and ready charging across America except I have to stop every 200 miles to recharge when my battery goes down or the wind doesn’t blow then the stations only sell gas and super sized sodas no place to plug in need a longer extension cord so I limp in on a dead battery order a pizza to go might as well eat it’s a long way home on foot. —SPJST—

To the Bereaved Survivors of Our Deceased Brothers and Sisters, the SPJST Supreme Lodge Expresses Its Heartfelt Sympathy. Fraternally, Leonard D. Mikeska, FIC Chief Financial Officer —SPJST—

In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy The members of Karel Jonáš, Lodge 28, East Bernard, express our sympathy to the family of EMIL WILLIAM FALTISEK, JR., age 94, who passed away peacefully at home in Lake Jackson, Texas, on Friday, March 12, 2021. Memorial service was held on Wednesday, March 24 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Lake Jackson, beginning with a visitation at 10 a.m. and rosary at 10:30 Emil Faltisek, Jr. a.m., followed by mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Interment followed at Restwood Memorial Park with Military Funeral Honors. Born on March 31, 1926, to Helen Keprta and Emil Faltisek in East Bernard, he grew up with five sisters, and was affectionately called “Sonny.” Immediately after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and became a B-17 bomber tailgunner in World War II. By 19 years of age, he was honorably discharged after flying 24 European missions, and awarded the Victory Medal, the Air Medal with two Bronze Leaf Clusters, a Sharpshooters Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the EuropeanAfrican-Middle Eastern Medal with three Battle Stars, and the Good Conduct

Medal. Emil married Ollie Rachunek in December 1946, and soon after they moved to Lake Jackson. He began his 39-year career as an instrument technologist with Dow Chemical Company, where many coworkers knew him only as “Kingfish.” When there were problems, Kingfish was the one called out to solve them, often in the middle of the night. Emil and Ollie had seven children and raised them in the same home where Emil lived until his death. Emil was an active member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, and previously of its home parish St. Mary: Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Emil was truly one of the “Greatest Generation” who knew how to make-do and solve problems. He was hard-working and responsible, a faithful believer, brave and honest, a man of integrity. Truly one of a kind, he’s been described as “a diamond in the rough” and “salt of the earth.” Well known for his directness and brutal honesty, he was also quite charming, with a sense of humor and a quick wit. He enjoyed staying busy: fixing anything broken - even if it meant designing a needed part, woodworking in his garage or at side jobs, tending to his cows and spending time at “the pasture.” He was an expert carpenter, often volunteering his skills at his church and Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School. As “Gramps,” he especially loved holding and spoiling the babies, reading to the youngest, giving tractor rides, pushing in the tire swing, playing ball or attending ballgames. In later years, he began recalling his wartime experiences, and spoke to audiences on several occasions of his amazing adventures. Active even at age 93, Emil began each day on his exercise bike, while praying his rosary, and before working his daily crossword puzzle. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard. In addition to his parents, Emil was preceded in death by son Bill (Emil William, III); grandson Colin Samway; and sisters Helen (W.J. “Dub”) Aubertin, Annette (Maurice) Weber, and Bernie (John) Reed. Get to Know District One Youth Counselor Hannah Kovar

Hannah Kovar was born at Humana Hospital in Bryan, Texas, on September 11, 1992, to David and Sharon Kovar. Hannah grew up in Snook and continues to reside there today. Hannah’s father grew up in the SPJST Youth Program and was District One King during his time. Her mother, however, did not grow up in the program, but she knew she wanted her children involved in this organization. Hannah is a lifelong member of SPJST and became an active youth member at the age of eight. Hannah is the oldest of two kids; she has a younger brother named Hayden. Growing up, Hannah spent most of her summers at her grandparents’ house. There she would spend her days outside playing baseball, riding around in the pasture, or playing ping-pong in her grandfather’s shop. As a youth club member, Hannah enjoyed participating in youth achievement day (YAD) where she competed in royalty, talent, and crafts. Although she never advanced to state in royalty (first runner-up both years)

or talent, she did advance in several craft categories. One of her best memories from State YAD is winning the special category contest by painting a rock to look like a lamb. Hannah was also a member of the Lodge 9, Snook Ceska Beseda group where she danced for six years. When she was eight years old, Hannah began attending SPJST camp at Camp Val Verde. She has many memories of camp from horseback riding, hiking the trails, Christy’s Crossing, and parties on the basketball courts. Hannah loves SPJST camp and has only missed one year of camp since she was eight. Hannah also attended camp at Forest Glen and has continued at Camp Kubena. Hannah’s last year as a leader-intraining (LIT) was her first year at Camp Kubena. She fondly remembers sleeping on the floors of the dining hall due to the cabins not being built yet. Hannah graduated from Snook High School where she was active in FFA, volleyball, basketball, softball, track, tennis, golf, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She was also active in 4-H and the 4-H Exchange program, traveling to Tennessee, Kansas, and Pennsylvania. Hannah raised market rabbits and goats to show in the Burleson County Fair for many years. Her love of goats allowed her to raise her own baby goats for a few years. Hannah was also crowned the 2010 Burleson County Fair Queen. Hannah has enjoyed making kolaches throughout the years and has entered

them in the Kolache Fest bake show several times. She was crowned Miss Kolache Fest in 2011 and 2012 and won grand and reserve champion with her kolaches in 2012. After high school, Hannah attended Texas A&M University where she graduated with a degree in recreation, parks, and tourism sciences with an emphasis in youth development. She is employed as an a d m i n istrative associate at Texas A&M Counseling and Psychological Services. Hannah also works part-time at Aggie sporting events as a concession’s supervisor.

Hannah is active at Lodge 9, Snook. She was Assistant District One Youth Counselor for three years and has served as District One Youth Counselor since 2020. —SPJST—

Učme se česky Let Us Study Czech Lekce šestá Lesson 6 Read the following out loud. Get family or friends help with the pronunciation; do them together. Clip and save each lesson, and compile them into notebook. dobrý den - good day dobré ráno - good morning dobré jitro - good morning dobrý večer - good evening dobrou noc - good night sbohem - goodbye s Pánem Bohem - goodbye na shledanou - see you later nazdar - hello, cheerio S

S

S

The most useful term is dobrý den. It has almost replaced dobré odpoledne meaning good afternoon and made inroads in replacing even dobré ráno or dobré jitro. Dobrý den has also replaced quite a few overly polite greetings such as poklona, má úcta, rukulíbám, etc. S

S

S

Dobré ráno is used more in the country, while dobré jitro is more common in the cities. Dobré jitro is becoming more and more common. Since jitro is a poetic word

and not otherwise commonly used, you may run across an abbreviation dobrýtro, which is strictly colloquial. S

S

S

Sbohem has a religious origin. Literal translation is “with God” and traces apparently to the phrase Jdi (or Jděte) s Bohem. Jdi is singular, while Jděte is plural imperative meaning “Go with God”. The religious meaning has been slowly lost in the common usage, therefore, it is written now as one word, sbohem, instead of s Bohem. S

S

S

The religious meaning has been largely preserved with the longer form of the same greeting s Pánem Bohem, and, therefore, it is usually written as three separate words with capital letters. Literal translation would be “with Lord God”. Occasionally, you may see it written as one word, spánem bohem. S

S

S

Dobrý večer and dobrou noc are used similarly as in this country. The same is true of na shledanou. S

S

S

Nazdar was made popular by the Sokols, and in this country, it was regarded as a special Sokol greeting. This is no longer so. Nazdar is very common, and no

S

S

S

When you meet someone who is older or whom you do not know closely then the greeting of dobrý den would come to your lips, while a close friend or contemporary you would greet with nazdar. From the point of an English-speaking person, the usage of nazdar is peculiar in the sense that it could and actually is commonly used, not only when meeting a person like the American “hello”, but also in parting, instead of na shledanou or sbohem. Sliby Ve slibech buď opatrný, věrný a svědomitý. Děti nemajíc žádného jmění nemohou mnoho slíbiti. Co však dle svých okolností s rozvahou slíbilo.
