Editor’s Note
Third time’s the charm! Convention begins this week! Congratulations to all participants
of the 2021 SPJST State Youth Achievement Day held Saturday, July 31 at the Frank W. Mayborn Center in Temple! We certainly enjoyed hosting this live event once again. It was a wonderful day, and the convention center was filled with excited youth, parents, grandparents, other family members, and friends. A special thanks to all who attended. I especially enjoyed the royalty competition and hearing how our teens talk and feel about SPJST and what a difference our organization makes in their lives. Congratulations to the new State King Caleb See and State Duke Zane Lauderdale, both of Lodge 9, Snook, and State Queen Megan Ohnheiser and State Duchess Lilyanna Howard, both of Lodge 185, New Braunfels. King Caleb follows in the footsteps of his brother Colby (2016 State King) and uncle John See III (1986 State King). State Duchess Lilyanna’s uncle Jonathan Haag was the 1998 State King. Best wishes to these young people as they represent SPJST traveling the state in the next year and serving as our youth ambassadors.
State YAD results are included in this week’s Vestnik on pages 22 to 34. All of the craft photos, talent videos, and royalty speech videos can be viewed online at spjst.org. 33rd SPJST Convention The 33rd SPJST Convention begins this Friday, August 13 in Killeen. It’s Your Life
The Power of Positivity The last year and a half has been very challenging for many of us. This pandemic has caused us to make many life changes. We were stuck inside for a long time; we were told what we can do and what we can’t do. Some of us lost our jobs and struggled with our health and the health of friends and families. Our married life was tested. Our children and grandchildren were struggling without their friends. Everything changed, and with that, our attitudes started changing, too. It became all too easy to focus on the negative and forget about all the positives around us. “I can’t do this” . . . “They won’t let me do that.” . . . “I shouldn’t go there.” . . . “It wouldn’t be right to do this.” . . . “I couldn’t get this done.” All these “not” words created an environment where we looked at the negative first. The negative became a pandemic in itself. Each one of us started feeding off the other’s negative, and soon we forgot how fortunate we really are. If you spend your time looking at the negatives, after a while, you will look for the negatives. Look at the positives, and you find yourself looking for the positives. During this pandemic, I realized how blessed I really am. 1. I have lost friends to the Covid, but I had those friends in the first place. 2. If you lost relatives to Covid, cherish the times you had with them not the time without them. 3. When everything was locked down, I could still talk to my relatives through Zoom or phone and email. I still have my voice to talk to them and my ears to listen to them.
4. I have a wife to worry about. 5. I have children that worry about me. 6. I have grandchildren who are happy to see me. 7. I get up every morning and put two feet on the floor. 8. My son-in-law lost his job, but he still had a wife and kids to wake up to and a family to support him. 9. I get to see the sun, feel the rain, hear the thunder, and smell the flowers. 10. If I lost my job today, my life would still be good. I will still have my life, God, family, and friends. They are still there, even if the job isn’t. The negative can be just as debilitating as a disease. The positive can be just as therapeutic as a prescription. Wake up every morning and thank God you are about to experience life - good or bad, you have a life to experience. When I took this position, I took it knowing there is nothing I had to do to make my money, except to show up every day. My job was secure. It didn’t matter if I did a bad job; it was still secure. I listened to committee after committee telling us how bad everything is . . . telling us to cut this, cut that, take this away, take that away. I saw a team of people looking for the negative and finding it. I didn’t fall into that trap. My job is to look at the 360-degree view. I know if we look at the positive, we can make the moves to eliminate the negative. It’s never about cutting expenses. It’s about the cost to cut that expense. It doesn’t help to save $5,000 if it costs $6,000 to do it. But if we can make shifts in efficiency, that allows us to make $10,000 when we make that $5,000 cut, it becomes a positive. If
we have to spend a million dollars to get a system that will help us save $500,000 and make $2 million at the same time, then that is a positive. It’s time to leave the negative behind and focus on the power of positivity. Every move we have made this year has been for the positive. If we saw negative effects, we stopped. Every move has one question attached—how does it affect the 360degree view? If it’s positive, we move forward. As we go into the 33rd Convention this week, and SPJST starts to enter a new era, let’s focus on the positive. If you are reading this article, you know I believe we should leave the past in the past and move forward. We move forward by looking for the positive. SPJST is as strong as ever. We are improving our systems - not to spend money - but to bring value and growth. Every dollar spent is being looked at for the value it can bring. Nothing is being spent just to spend. We are looking to change our governance to make the leaders accountable. Today, I can kick my feet up on the desk and do nothing and still have my job (until you vote me out). I am confident that next month, you will not allow me to do that. And, that is a good thing. Some think this governance is taking away their control over the leadership. That’s looking at the negative. Looking at the positive, it is giving you more con-
trol. If I’m doing a bad job, you can get the District Directors to make the President/CEO act to eliminate me and get someone in before I create bigger problems. You don’t have to wait four years to vote me out. Do you know how much damage a person can do in four years if they are not qualified? And at the same time, you are paying them to mess up the system. I like job security, but I am okay with someone holding me accountable. If you see the positive, you will see good things coming. If you see good things coming, you will see more positive. It’s time to leave the negative behind with COVID-19 and start looking for the positive. I look forward to the Convention and the new era of positivity. Some people say the glass is half full; some say it’s half empty. I say, “I feel blessed there is something in the glass.” My door is always open, figuratively and literally. Always be blessed! July - St. John’s Picnic in Schulenburg; cooked burgers for Districts Three, Four, Five, and Seven Junior Camp Session 1 at Camp Kubena; Lodge 81, Needville; Supreme Lodge Audit Committee meeting; Supreme Lodge meeting. Commentary As the Supreme Lodge, we were pleased to see a profit in operations up until June 2021 so far. SPJST also continues to see improvement in investment net income. This has been very difficult in this low interest environment. We have seen many other fraternal insurance companies struggle throughout the United States. The Supreme Lodge unanimously approved all the By-Law Committee recommendations that are to be set forth before the Convention delegates. Good corporate governance is an important step for the future of SPJST. The Audit Committee sees improvements and great changes in the Insurance Department. The Audit Committee reviewed the audit by JRBT, and all went well. Board members continue to talk and meet in between Supreme Lodge meetings on a variety of topics. Camp Kubena continues its improvements on facilities and programs. The Supreme Lodge has worked so efficiently, and members are so well prepared before the meetings that we were able to finish business in a single day - saving the Society much money. SPJST’s Supreme Lodge members and RVOS’ board of directors had a social following the meeting. Both organizations share so many of the Czech values and have the same agents. Great fel-
lowship was had, and old acquaintances were rekindled. Fraternally, Bradley Stavinoha District Five Director •••

Lodge 54, West honors longtime members The meeting of SPJST Lodge 54 West was held at St. Joseph’s Hall and called to order at 7 p.m. by President Freddie Kaluza. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Kaluza followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members Elsie Marie Perez and Sherry Cockrell and her father Benedict Matusek who attended all of our lodge meetings for many years before he became ill and could no longer drive. We had all officers and agents present except agent Jean Martin for the meeting. There were 23 members and guests in attendance. President Freddie Kaluza welcomed all who were in attendance for the meeting,
Monday, August 9, 2021 especially guests District Three Director John Engelke and wife Diana and State Fraternal Director Frank Horak. We dispensed with the reading of the minutes and fraternal activities coordinator’s and treasurer’s reports until the next meeting because we wanted to celebrate honoring all who were receiving a 75- and 50-year pin and special recognition awards. Janice Kaluza read a letter from the SPJST Home Office about lodge refunds indicating our premium refund would be $2,235.56, and it has been deposited directly in our lodge’s bank account. President Freddie Kaluza told the members this refund was important to our lodge because it helps to fund our Christmas party held the first Sunday in December. He also said we will have a bigger, better party since the 2020 party was canceled because of Covid-19. We
are looking for good things ahead for our lodge and its members. Shelly from West Rest Haven called and said we can do a Join Hands Day project for the residents but can’t attend because of strict visitor rules. Janice had talked to Luritha Svacek about making homemade kolaches for the residents, and they would be having a farmer’s market. We were to wrap each kolache individually to keep it safer for all the residents because of covid. They suggested we get eight dozen kolaches. Terry Sefcik made a motion to order the kolaches, and JoAnn Matus seconded the motion. Motion passed. The event would take place on June 16. Any volunteer members who wanted to help wrap the kolaches could meet at St. Joseph Hall at 12 noon the day before to wrap each one to take to the nursing home.

Mr. Willis let us know that he always enjoys giving out the awards and was very proud of the students. Under new business, President Kaluza informed the members that we were unable to meet last year to present the 50and 75-year pins for the 2020 year so they would be combined with the 2021 year pins. Members receiving a 50-year pin in 2020 are Helen Marie Matus, Daniel R. Mynar, Alfred “Freddie” Renfro Pavlas,

Back to School Tips for a Better Student By Justin Everett Lodge 24, Cyclone With summer vacation coming to an end, it is time to start preparing your young ones for getting back into the swing of things as far as back to school goes. I was not a high school graduate that long ago; therefore, I learned a thing or two about going from a relaxing vacation to a hectic first week of school. Most schools in Texas start the final week of August. With that being said, a great first tip would be getting your young ones used to going to bed at a reasonable hour. For the past two months, lots of children have been picking their own bedtimes. However, with school being just around the corner, having a scheduled bedtime at least two weeks prior to the start date of school is a wise choice to be consid-
ered. Nine o’clock is a good time to start winding down and 9:30 should be the time for bed. Should you have problems motivating your children to keep this routine, rewards such as healthy bedtime snacks (any kind of fruit) or electronic allowance (20 minutes of a game or Internet time right before bed) may be of assistance. However, nothing beats a classic bedtime story reading. During the days leading up to the new school year, be sure to include some academic time during your child’s day. This can be something as easy as purchasing a children’s workbook at your local retail store. When your child wakes up after they have eaten their breakfast, make it mandatory that they must complete a few problems out of the workbook correctly before they can start their fun activities for the day. Then, let them have fun until after their lunch and make them do another work page from the workbook to keep their brains active. Also try to encourage more games that exercise the brain such as word searches and hangman. Even letting your child read a page or chapter a day from their

favorite book can be a big help to get their brains warmed up for the new school year. Taking one final family summer day trip can also help safely bring your child’s summer to an end. This could include a day at the lake or pool or a day at the waterpark or zoo, etc. However, the trip should be encouraged after your child has completed a page of work in his or her workbook for the day. As a parent, you will come to find that little rewards such as a snack, electronic allowance, or outdoor playtime can make a healthier relationship between you and your child. In the mornings, after breakfast and workbook time, take the kids for at least a 30-minute walk around your neighborhood while it is still cool out, and spend the time having conversations. Only the adult or parent in charge will be allowed a phone on the walk. Promise the children if they go on the walk and leave electronics at home, they will be rewarded with them later. Practicing morning routines two weeks before school can be quite beneficial as well. Right when your kids wake up, have them get dressed and ready for the day as to staying in their pajamas. Then of course, breakfast, workbook, walk, free time, lunch, workbook, brain game (word search, hangman), free time. Early evenings should be spent as always and not a lot of changes should be made there to prepare for back to school. Mom and Dad should also be in their bedroom by 9 p.m. to set an example for the children about getting to bed early
Full Steam Ahead: World’s Largest Steam Locomotive Returns with “The Big Boy 2021 Tour”
on a school night. When the very first day of school arrives, try to make getting ready that morning calm and easy. Leave the television off and electronics in another room. As a parent, constantly say positive reinforcers such as, “looking good, kids” and “all right, we are going to have a good day today.” Positive attitudes are key in achieving a goal. Hopefully, these tips will help your family have a better school year and home life. —SPJST—

Members invited to assist with Moravian rebuilding
Donation Total as of August 6, 2021: $27,087
On Thursday afternoon, June 24, a tornado swept through several villages in the south-eastern Moravian region of the Czech Republic, ripping the roofs off buildings, uprooting trees, and overturning cars. At least five people were killed and hundreds injured by the rare and destructive tornado. The twister destroyed thousands of structures, tearing through seven towns and villages in the southeast part of the country, making this the most severe on record in the area. Damage commensurated with EF3 to EF4 intensity on the 0 to 5 Enhanced Fujita scale for tornado strength. That would place maximum wind speeds in the 140 to 180 mph range. Radio Prague reported on June 25 said that financial as well as material aid is pouring into South Moravian villages hit by the devastating tornado. While the government has allocated emergency funds to cover immediate needs, caring individuals have already donated millions of crowns to public collections set up by the country’s non-governmental support organizations. Closer to home, Americans are learning of the destruction and are asking what they can do in order to show their solidarity and support for their distant motherland whose residents are now suffering and who must begin what promises to be a lengthy rebuilding process. Texans, especially, remember that it was not so long ago that it was the Czech Republic that showed compassion and support for the people of Texas when disaster struck. In 2013, the Czech Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented four million crowns — approximately $200,000 — to the city of West, Texas for rebuilding following the massive explosion of a fertilizer warehouse that occurred in that Central Texas community. Four years later, in 2017, the Czech Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved the provision of five million Czech Crowns — approximately $237,000 — for humani-
tarian assistance to displaced families in La Grange, Texas in response to Hurricane Harvey. The gifts demonstrated the Czech Republic’s dedication and solidarity with the United States and especially Texans, where Texans of Czech Moravian ancestry represent a large part of the population. Individuals and organizations wishing to offer assistance may make their tax-deductible donations to: Czech Moravian Benevolence Fund c/o The SPJST Foundation P.O. Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503 The SPJST Foundation The Foundation is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides assistance to projects of redeeming value, especially those which embrace Czech heritage and culture. Donors may also make their gifts online on Facebook at this link: (8) Facebook. “Facebook was selected as our primary donor site as Facebook pays all of the processing fees, enabling100 percent of the monies collected will go to the cause,” says Foundation President and Honorary Czech Consul Brian Vanicek. Every individual and group donor will be recognized. The funds will be retained until such time it can be determined where they can be most effectively utilized. “As Texans of Czech ancestry we have a deep and enduring need to be connected with our Czech homeland. The Czech Moravian Benevolence Fund will help us to make that connection. We will stay in touch with our friends and contacts throughout the region,” says Vanicek. “To that end, The SPJST Foundation’s Facebook page will provide regular updates of how the situation is progressing.” —SPJST—

Lodge 88, Houston youth share summer activities Dear Members, I had a fun summer with working hard at softball and learning pitching. We went to the zoo, and my favorite were the lions and monkeys. We enjoyed a day at the Astros game - it was so fun! They won, and we were able to run the bases at the end. We attended State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) in Temple, and I placed first and third with my crafts. We enjoyed a day at the new pool at Lodge 88. I also was excited to try the lap pool. SPJST showcases Talents at 2021 State Youth Achievement Day a
pproximately 200 SPJST youth from across Texas met at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, July 31, 2021, to showcase their knowledge and skills at SPJST State Youth Achievement Day (YAD). The 2021 competition involved participants in grades kindergarten to high school senior. They competed in eight art/craft categories, individual and group talent, and public speaking. District and State YADs allow SPJST youth club members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and gain recognition for their achievements. As the youth compete, they develop self-confidence and sharpen their decision-making abilities. They also have a chance to socialize with other youth club members. SPJST State YAD is the culmination of a year of hard work by some of the best and brightest SPJST youth club members. First place winning entries in seven District YAD competitions qualified youth to compete at the state contest. The seven District YADs were held virtually in 2021. The grand finale of the 2021 State Youth Achievement Day was the presentation of the 2021-2022 State Royalty Court. Crowned to represent SPJST in the coming year were King Caleb See and Duke Zane Lauderdale, both of Lodge 9, Snook in District One, and Queen Megan Ohnheiser and Duchess Lilyanna Howard, both of Lodge 185, New Braunfels in District Seven. State King Caleb, 16, is the son of Randy and Jonna See of Snook. Caleb is a junior at Snook High School. State Duke

SPJST - United we Stand
SPJST - United we Stand
Royalty Speech By 2021-2022 State King Caleb See
Royalty Speech By 2021-2022 State Queen Megan Ohnheiser
Dobre odpoledne. Good afternoon. Thank you for being here as we celebrate SPJST and delve into the phrase “United We Stand.” This phrase has been attributed to the Greek storyteller Aesop. It is used in many mottos with the intent to inspire unity and collaboration. The idea is that when one focuses on the individual, instead of the group, he will surely fail. When I think of SPJST and its members, the characteristics of Brotherhood and Joining Hands really stand out to me. Those traits are the definition of being united. Brotherhood is the feeling of friendship, support, and understanding between people. In Mark 3:25, it says, “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” When we seek brotherhood, we are coming together for the greater good. I have been a member of SPJST since I was six years old. I trust that when I work with my club to complete a project, this brotherhood will support me along the way. Our youth club celebrates brotherhood by working together to perform skits for YAD; put on programs for Grandparents Day and Christmas; collect and assemble care packages for the elderly, our military, and for those in need. Houses stand together, and so do SPJST members. Join Hands Day was created by SPJST to build stronger connections between members through com-
munity service activities. This reminds me of a verse from John Dickinson’s war piece, The Liberty Song: “Then join hand in hand, brave Americans all! By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall!” For my club, Join Hands Day is when youth club and adult l o d g e members unite at our local cemetery to clean and beautify the grounds. We work together because there is strength in numbers, and our cemetery looks awesome when we complete the project. The youth also learn about the history of our community while working with our elders. Another way we unite is by literally joining hands to dance the Ceska Beseda. My club has been performing these waltz and polka steps since 2003, and I have been participating since I was eight. We perform this expression of Czech pride at District and State YADs, as well as at other venues such as World Fest; Musiky, Musiky!; and the Kolache Festival. Joining together with my fellow youth club members to share this dance with others helps our Czech heritage survive. Living a life focusing on being united versus being divided has led me to be the best version of myself. If I am crowned SPJST State King, I will encourage and inspire while working with others. Thank you, and God bless! —SPJST—
Hello, distinguished judges, members, and guests. “United We Stand” is a phrase that has been used across time; as a battle cry for the Revolutionary War at the birth of this great nation and as a phrase that we use frequently today during this pandemic. This phrase does not just demonstrate people uniting for various reasons over the years, but also the unity promoted by SPJST since 1897. Although we are from numerous lodges within seven districts across the state, we are united as one fraternity that we call a family. This family is very diverse and includes many youth members that are given a vast number of opportunities for their growth in the five pillars: Fraternity, Brotherhood, Youth, Heritage, and Humanity. These opportunities are made available to the youth of this organization regardless of their heritage. I, for example, am Norse, French, Scot, Irish, English, Native American, and German. You didn’t hear Czech in there anywhere, did you? Even though SPJST is centered around the Czech heritage, I, with my unique background, am still welcome, and I appreciate the opportunity to learn about and
23
grow within the Czech heritage. SPJST takes all this diversity and incorporates it into one united family. SPJST does not just offer material possibilities to its youth, but also emotional rewards. These possibilities include lodge meetings, district outings, camp, scholarships, and more. The bonds of friendship formed with other members and the community, and also the feeling that you are a part of something substantial are ample rewards. Among the opportunities that fall into both of these categories in SPJST is being a Leader-in-Training, or as we call it, LIT. Becoming an LIT has been my goal since I joined the youth program. As a little girl, I looked at the LITs with admiration and respect. It is now my turn, to unite with other LITs, to encourage participation within the youth program, and to inspire leadership qualities in the younger generation. I am proud to be a part of this SPJST family. And I know that when we stand together, as one, we can do great things. “United We Stand” is a phrase that is truly an accurate description of SPJST. Thank you. —SPJST—

State Merit Grant Essay: SPJST - Superheroes unite! By Caitlyn Petett of Lodge 107, Floresville - District Seven
F
or as long back as I can remember, I have always wanted to be a superhero. I still remember going to Six Flags in San Antonio with my parents when I was much younger. As I am walking into the park, there it is - the Superman cape blowing in the wind at one of the game areas. I knew I had to play that game and win that cape. I wanted to feel powerful and save the world like the superheroes I had watched on television at home. After all, why couldn’t I lift a building or shoot rays out of my hands to blast some giant meteor headed towards Earth? The best part was everyone would be cheering for me! Okay, reality check – I got older and realized that I didn’t live in a fantasy world. It was impossible for one person to have every superpower imaginable or to even be able to stop a speeding train with their bare hands. However, each one of us has a strength or something that we are good at and that is what makes us unique – we all have individual, special superpowers. Every one of us holds special superpowers that we can use to better ourselves and those around us. In our SPJST Youth Club, we have superheroes of all ages with different talents and strengths (aka superpowers). I am one of the older members of the youth club, so I am better at mentoring the younger members of the club and helping with more difficult tasks. Some of the youth need help building things or
understanding how to properly hold one of our meetings using parliamentary procedure. These are just a few of my superpowers and how I use them in our youth club to be a superhero. Now, I am terrible at arts and crafts, so the y o u n g e r members of the youth club are better able to use their special superpowers to assist me in this area. Yes, I can color and glue, but I will sit for hours trying to come up with something creative. The younger kids are amazing at coming up with creative ideas and doing arts and crafts. Our leaders get to showcase their special superpowers of planning activities for us and teaching us about benevolence and what it means to serve our community. I have had the opportunity to participate in so many wonderful community service projects over the years. The youth leaders have taught me what it means to be a leader and I have been able to develop some new leadership superpowers, thanks to them. I love that each brings different
superpowers with us to our meetings and together, as superheroes, we can achieve anything. It is almost summer, and I look forward to going to Camp Kubena. Not only do I get to see my friends from SPJST, but I also get to use some of my superhero superpowers. When the leaders call on the youth for assistance, we get to all unite with our superpowers to help. If someone is having a hard time learning something new, then I get to use my superpower to help them. I really like it when someone uses their superpower to help me. We are not perfect and sometimes we need to lean on each other for help. I still remember how scared I was to do the zipline my first year of summer camp. Some of my friends, who are now my superheroes, used their superpowers to encourage and motivate me to do the zipline. It was hard, and boy, was I scared to death! Honestly, I played my death over and over in my head. However, with their support, I did it! It was fun, and I over-
came my fear! Now, I look forward to summer camp and trying new things because I know that my SPJST family of superheroes will be there, and they have amazing superpowers that bring us closer together during camp. I still can’t believe that I have been a member of SPJST since I was born. My grandmother was very fond of this organization, and it was special to our family. I am sad that my grandmother is no longer alive, and I miss her so much. She was my greatest superhero, and she taught me to be happy and enjoy life. I know that my love of SPJST and family came from her. She had a natural superpower for making sure that families kept in touch and had fun together. She always told me to look for the good in people and if someone needed help, then I should help them. This is another superpower that was given to me from my grandmother. I genuinely care about people, and I enjoy watching others come together and have a good time. I am glad that I share this superpower with one of my superheroes and so many others in our SPJST organization. By the way, I did win that Superman cape that day at Six Flags. It didn’t give me any special superpowers that I didn’t already have inside of me, but it sure was fun to pretend. When we unite, we all become superheroes with superpowers to do amazing things! —SPJST—

In Memoriam In Memory of Alvin Stasney Alvin Joseph Stasney passed away peacefully at his home in Crosby, Texas, on Monday, July 19, 2021, at the age of 100. Alvin was born in Crosby on January 2, 1921, the first child to Millie Zadrapa Stasney and Joseph Stasney. He had younger twin brothers, Odell and Gordon Stasney, both deceased. Alvin has three children with his first wife Doris Klima Stasney (deAlvin Stasney ceased); Mark Stasney (wife Janet), Rebecca Smith (husband Rusty), and Laura Roman (husband Joe, deceased). Alvin is survived by his wife of 32 years, Virginia Kinney Gibson Stasney. From Virginia, Alvin has three stepchildren - Troy Gibson, Todd Gibson (deceased), and Tonia Dikeman (husband Dennis). Alvin has eight grandchildren - Jonathan and Robert Stasney, Anne and Gordon Smith, and Joseph, Christina, Elyssa, and Ava Roman, along with four step-grandchildren - Derrick Gibson, Brittany Godin (husband Noah), Dennis Dikeman II and Courtney Dikeman, and two step-great-grandchildren - Cam and Luke Godin. Alvin and his brothers lost their father Joseph when Alvin was just four years old. During that era of the Great Depression, his mother Millie struggled to provide even the most basic necessities for her three sons by taking in laundry and other manual work. She eventually opened and operated Millie’s Café in Crosby. In the meantime, Alvin and his brothers largely raised themselves by their own wits and self-reliance, nurtured by the community, hunting and fishing in the woods of the San Jacinto river basin, where Lake Houston and Newport now exist. When he entered first grade, Alvin spoke no English, only Czech, and wore his very first pair of shoes. Despite these humble beginnings, Alvin received a solid education from Crosby schools.
In 1943, Alvin joined the United States Army Air Corps in World War II as navigator of a B-24 in the 392nd Bomber Unit stationed in Wendling, England. He flew 30 missions over Europe and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, Alvin returned to Crosby and ultimately built a dry cleaning business, purchased a Mobil Oil bulk distributorship that delivered fuel to area farmers and businesses, and built two Mobil Oil retail service stations. He and his brother Odell were active in the growth of Crosby, building homes and developing real estate. Alvin loved the outdoors, fishing with his brothers and friends in the waters of Trinity Bay, Matagorda Bay, and 3rd and 8th Pass south of the border in Mexico. After settling down and starting a family in his 1940s, Alvin’s love of the outdoors continued through his gardening and planting of trees and flowers around his home. He also enjoyed long family driving vacations in the 1970s throughout Mexico and the southwestern United States. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 91, San Jacinto. Alvin’s greatest devotions in life were to his Catholic faith, his family, the community of Crosby, and to our great nation. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and he was an exceptional example of how a moral, fair, generous, and compassionate man should live. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Visitation was Tuesday, July 27 from 5 until 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Sterling-White Funeral Home in Highlands. The funeral service was Wednesday, July 28 beginning with a rosary at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crosby. Following the graveside service, a reception with food was held. Donations may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 915 Runneburg Road, Crosby, Texas 77532. Alvin’s son, Mark Stasney, can be reached at markstasney@hotmail.com. —SPJST—

Early Czech Schools August Book of the Month
Czech Center Museum Houston offers free language classes
With the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year just around the corner, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) has chosen Early Czech Schools as its August Book of the Month to coincide with that most important time of the year. Early Czech Schools was selected as the Texas State Genealogical Society’s first place winner at the statewide conference in 2014 from a number of entries in the Category VII Division: Books Published by Partner Society Members. This offering is a two volume, soft bound set containing 597 pages of stories, more than 600 photos, and over 2,900 surnames. The book is indexed for easy navigation. Features include early Czech educators in the Fatherland, early Texas educators in public as well as private schools in Texas, plus photos and articles about Czech Clubs at Texas A&M, The University of Texas, and The University of Houston. Included is a section on more than 100 Czech schools from the 1800s, which were built in numerous small towns and in the countryside where the families lived. This section contains so much more than a photo of the school and a class photo with many of the students identified. You will enjoy viewing various newspaper articles, documents, awards, and other types of special recognition that the students received. The last chapter contains articles about the individual students. The cost of the two volume set is $55 with free shipping and handling during the month of August, which is a $17 savings. Don’t delay. Send your check, payable to TCGS, in the amount of $55 for each set to Nancy Machu, 3337 Bianco Terrace, Round Rock, Texas 78665. Checks must be postmarked on or before August 31. For questions or to pay by credit card, please call Nancy at 512-971-4284. Nancy Machu Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—

Learn more about Czech Texas History August 26 at CCMH Join us at a complimentary lecture on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at 12 noon at the Czech Center Museum Houston, located at 4920 San Jacinto Street in Houston. The lecture discusses the hurdles Czechs and Slovaks were facing when migrating to the USA. Czech migration to the United States started in the mid-19th century during the Habsburg Dynasty and continued through the outbreaks of the World Wars. Spurred on by the letters of Czech Reverend Josef Bergmann praising life in America, in particular Texas, many immigrants undertook the tough journey. Only half of the first group of im-
migrants to follow Bergmann in 1851 made it to Texas, but their story helped pave the way for future Czechs’ safe passage. Now, there are 1.2 million Czech-Americans in Texas, making it the largest Czech community in the United States. The lecture will be presented by Dr. Ivan Puš. He received his doctoral degree from the Palacký University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, where he has been working as an Assistant Professor of History since. Dr. Puš is a scholar of European nationalisms in the nineteenth and twentieth century and is particularly interested in the Czech-German relations and the history of the Jews in Eastern Europe. He is currently a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence in the History Department of University of Houston, where he lectures on Jewish history. —SPJST—
Czech Republic: Day of Memory August 21 June 2019 - The Czech Republic Senate officially announced August 21 as the Day of Memory of the Victims of the 1968 Invasion and subsequent occupation of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops. 1968: The then Soviet leader, Leonid Brezhnev, backed by eastern bloc allies, had dispatched a massive invasion force to crush the Prague Spring movement led by Czechoslovakia’s communist leader, Alexander Dubček, whose liberal reforms had won wide domestic support but alarmed Moscow, who feared that they could presage the eventual loss of a cold war ally. In 1968, Alexander Dubček was appointed to the key post of First Secretary of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. Dubček made changes that liberatised the nation, a period known as the Prague Spring. In response, after failing to persuade the Czechoslovak leaders to change course, five other members of the Warsaw Pact invaded with Soviet tanks rolling into Czechoslovakia on the night of August 20, 1968. The invasion put an end to the democratisation and the humanist efforts at reform of the Communist system in Czechoslovakia
