Editor’s Note

Thankful Pumpkin Time Autumn is a beautiful time of

year with all of the fall colors, pumpkins, and times of thanksgiving. A fun, family activity is a “thankful pumpkin.” Select a pumpkin - either from the neighborhood pumpkin patch or a craft pumpkin from the hobby store. Each day during this fall season, grab a marker and write what you are thankful for on the pumpkin. What a masterpiece you will be creativing and what a beautiful centerpiece this will be for your Thanksgiving dinner on November 25. Be sure to send a picture of your family with their “thankful pumpkin” to the Vestnik. VĚSTNÍK

From the Desk of Delisle L. Doherty SPJST Vice President of Sales and Marketing

It’s Your Life

Consider the Possibilities Focus on possibilities, not roadblocks: The road of life contains a number of potholes and stumbling blocks. Of course, you will encounter them from time to time, and so will your friends and family. But don’t invest large quantities of your life focusing on past misfortunes. On the road of life, regret is a dead end. It is always a road to nowhere. All of us face difficult days. Sometimes even the most optimistic people become discouraged, and you are no exception. If you find yourself enduring difficult circumstances, perhaps it’s time for an extreme intellectual makeover perhaps it’s time to focus more on your strengths and opportunities, and less on the challenges that confront you. And one more thing: perhaps it’s time to put a little more faith in yourself. Every day, including this one, is brimming with possibilities. Every day is filled with opportunities to grow, to serve, and to share. But if you are entangled in a web of negativity, you may overlook the opportunities that have been

scattered along your path. Don’t give into pessimism, to doubt, or cynicism. Instead, keep your eyes upon the possibilities, fix yourself on opportunities, do your best, and success will follow. Once you learn to see opportunities and ignore failure, the road to success will be laid out for you. Starting today, wake up and say to yourself: “When I get this done” instead of “I hope I can get this done” or “If I get it done.” Start with “when the opportunity comes along, I will be there.” Put faith in yourself, and you will start living in a “when” world instead of an “if” world. When I finish this job. When I see my family. When I reach my goals for the day. Look forward, not backwards, and you will start to be in a world of “when it happens” instead of “if it happens.” Success will follow “when,” and failure will follow “if.” Choose your path. My door is always open; figuratively and literally. Stay blessed, Delisle L. Doherty Vice President of Sales and Marketing —SPJST—

District News District Two Fall Fun Day

October 24, 2021 • Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall 10842 State Highway 53 • Temple, Texas

Attention, District Two Members! We, the District Officers, are planning the District Two Fall Fun Day. This event will be held outdoors at the pavilion at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton - Star Hall on Sunday, October 24 at 3 p.m. Star Hall is located at 10842 State Highway 53, seven miles east of Temple. We will have a Christmas ornament contest for adults and youth. So get started on something for this contest! We will also have “trunk or treat.” We are asking each lodge in the district to please have one vehicle stuffed in the trunk with all sorts of candies - but please, no chocolate - and make sure all candy is individual wrapped. You can decorate the trunk with Halloween decorations or anyway you choose or not. You don’t have to stuff the trunk all the

way to the top - just so you have a lot of candy for the youth to pick from. We will be having hot dogs with all the trimmings, chips, nachos, drinks for your enjoyment, and it will only cost $2 per person. We will also have a cake walk, one spin wheel, door prizes, and a 50/50 drawing. All we ask is that you bring some sweets for the cake walk and something for the spin wheel. Please plan to come out to Seaton Star Hall on Sunday afternoon, October 24 for a lot of fun activities. Meet up with some folks that you may have not seen for a while. Let’s all have some fun! Thank You, Ruth Hanusch District Two Vice President/FAC —SPJST—

From the SPJST State Fraternal Director State Fraternal Director shares October updates SPJST Meetings, Play It Safe As long as the coronavirus continues to spread and impact lives, please review the tips below and incorporate them in your face-to-face adult lodge meetings and youth club meetings. Precautions to consider include actions to prevent transmission between people, where to hold the meeting, and how it can be modified to make a safer environment. Meeting organizers are requested to provide all necessary supplies – masks, hand hygiene stations, hand sanitizer or soap and water, tissues, and distance markers. Meeting online or teleconferencing remains an option that should be considered or when precautions cannot be effectively implemented or adequately communicated. If you have any specific questions relating to setting up an online meeting, please know that you may contact Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny at melaniez@spjst.com for additional information. Fraternal Focus for October Please make plans to join in on the next Fraternal Focus webcast coming Tuesday, October 19. SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek and Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny will be conducting the program. Please check the next Vestnik for more information. To register for the webcast, visit: https://spjst.org/fraternalfocus/. SPJST Scholarship Applications Available Online November 1 SPJST scholarship applications will be available online starting November 1. If you have a 2022 graduating high school senior in your lodge, please let him/her know they are eligible to apply for an SPJST scholarship. Also, full– time undergraduates who have not received an SPJST Scholarship may apply for the General Scholarship. 2022 State Tournaments All SPJST state tournaments at this

time have not been scheduled for 2022. We will be making a decision in October, and I will be sharing the information in the Vestnik. Here is the tentative schedule of the 2022 tournaments: Progressive “42” Dominoes January 8 • SPJST Home Office Tarok Tournament February 5 • SPJST Home Office Straight Dominoes March 5 • SPJST Home Office Regular 42 Dominoes April 2 • SPJST Home Office Something to Consider: Strategic Planning for Your Lodge SPJST recognizes the importance of fielding a fraternal program that is relevant and in touch with the lives of its members. Whereas some lodges are experiencing a resurgence in member participation, others have been less fortunate. There are reasons for this: While it is certainly possible for a lodge to experience a level of success without a plan, those lodges whose members have invested the time and resources into a mission and goals can look forward to achieving success at a much quicker pace. A great place to start is by conducting a simple — and fun — strategic planning session that helps to answer, “What is my lodge doing to make a positive difference for its members and for the community?” And with a little bit of advance notice, President/CEO Vanicek and I would love to lend a hand with the process. With just a little preparation, it is possible to conduct these three-step exercises in 60 to 90 minutes. In the end, the information that is collected can be useful in constructing a strategic plan for your lodge. It makes for a fast-paced and enjoyable program. Topics that don’t typically come up in your regular lodge meetings will be — the positives as well as the negatives — and then we talk about how to build on the positives and what we can do to eliminate the negatives. When we’re done, your lodge will be well on its way to moving forward with a clearly defined mission statement. If you’d like to have us come in and work with your lodge, please give me or Brian and call and we’ll set it up.

VĚSTNÍK SPJST Invites Members to Build Their Business Online SPJST invites business owners and service providers – large and small – to stand out online and promote their trades and services in the new SPJST Member Services Directory. The directory – first published in 1995 as a special edition of the Vestnik – is scheduled to go live in September. Reserve Your Listing Now Now is the time for business owners to claim their space in the directory. It’s easy to do. Begin by going to the spjst.org website. Once you’ve arrived, look for the big kolache and click on “SPJST Member Services Directory.” That will take you to the “Get Started” form. On the “Get Started” form, you will input your business name, location, and select the categories that apply to your business listing. There is also a place to include your contact information and your business website – if that is applicable. This basic information will enable the SPJST Communication Department with all of the initial information that they will need to set up the directory framework. “Once the framework is up and before the directory goes online, I will send an email and link to our SPJST business and service providers — to manage their listings,” explains Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny. “It’s at that point that business owners and service providers will be able to provide detailed information about the products and services as well as a photograph that helps to communicate their business.” The old printed directory featured a wide range of more than 700 business and service listings – everything from accountants, attorneys and artists to wedding cake designers, well drillers, woodworkers. “We expect the online directory to be much larger,” says President/CEO Brian Vanicek. “It isn’t necessary that you’re the business owner. The directory will include members who work for larger companies, too. The rule of thumb is any member who is in a position to provide a business or service qualifies.” “And the listing doesn’t have to reflect your primary occupation,” Vanicek adds. “We know that there are many SPJST members who have sideline busi-

nesses or services that they offer in their spare time. Hunting leases, fence building, beauty products, and so on . . . ” In addition to the member business listings, the directory will also include local lodge contacts, including sales agents and information about the life insurance and annuity benefits available to SPJST members and prospective members. There will also be sections which introduce various aspects of the SPJST experience – including the SPJST Youth Program, Scholarship Program, and Camp Kubena. The online format will also enable business owners to make updates online as well as add additional member business and service listings. Users will be able to conduct searches on the basis of topics as well as location – like the zip code. What will really make SPJST’s online directory unique is that only SPJST members will have access to posting their businesses or services; however, the general public – by virtue of the Internet – will also have access. “More access means more potential business for our members,” says Vanicek. “Exactly!” says Zavodny. “We’ll be taking advantage of social media to promote the directory – to members, of course, as well as to non-members. “It’s all part of SPJST’s invigorated effort to make membership in the SPJST a more engaging experience,” says SPJST Vice President of Sales and Marketing Delisle Doherty. “It underscores the great value SPJST places on building upon its existing relationships. We want to see our members do good. That’s the value proposition they receive in exchange for getting involved. We appreciate that and to show it, we’re going to provide every business that is listed in the directory with signage that will help to promote their business while it raises our profile.” “Every business listed in the directory will receive signage that will help to promote their business and help to build the SPJST member services network.”

Depending on the nature of the business or service, the signage will come in two forms – as a window decal and as a plaque – each designating the business or service provider as a “Proud SPJST Member.” “By marketing your business or service as an SPJST member, I believe you’ll get the same kind of stimulus that you would if you were a member of your local chamber of commerce – which is also a good thing,” says Doherty, adding, “It reflects your community service orientation and makes you more desirable to customers.” “And, certainly, it helps SPJST because it helps to reflect the superior character of our membership.” SPJST FAC Assistance We are here to help in you need assistance. She organized the event, and her husband Justin cooked all the meat and did not sleep all night to make sure everything came out yummy. Thank you, Dava Villafranca and Alexandra Villafranca from Villabella Cremations Garden for helping us put the plates together, and thank you to our pet funeral di-

SPJST Frisbees F ly High in Nepal Dear SPJST, I’m Terry Mikeska in San Angelo, Texas, and a member of Wall Brethren Church. Charlene Dusek (my aunt) and Sharon Hohmann (my dear friend) are members of SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo and members of the church. Since the 2015 deadly earthquake, I have completed 74 mission projects in Nepal including building a new school, a Christian church, providing water filtration and solar systems, medical camps, school supplies, and food and humanitarian relief to thousands of families. I have no office and no paid staff including myself, yet 100 percent volunteerism continues to help the poorest of the poor. My reason for this communication is

that for the past several years, Sharon Hohmann has donated some SPJST frisbees to take to these children in the villages so they can have something to play with as many have nothing at all, but work in the rice fields. I have attached some photos from this past August and September’s 2021 mission projects in Nepal. My website www.terrymikeskafoundation.org has hundreds of photos and stories. Each year, our club donates $50 to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive for supporting their activities. Another yearly project is that we sew a quilt for the Junior Sokol fundraiser which helps fund their participation in various slets. Our members have sewn and donated 40 baby quilts to Hope Clinic in Waxahachie. Some members also continue making them at home. At the October meeting, the Circle asks members to donate to the food drive, and we give the items collected to the local Helping Hands or the St. John Nepomucene Church food pantry. In December, members celebrate with games such as bingo and share a ham with sides for a Christmas meal. Members also donate towards the purchase of personal items that are placed in Christmas bags and delivered to home-bound members. At the July meeting, members participate in a white elephant sale. Members bring items from home and sell them to each other. Proceeds go to the club. We also have a show-and-tell. Members can share items such as personal collections, old photos, clothing, newspaper clippings, or any items such as quilts passed down through the years

Remembering Honorary Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride January 6, 1938 - September 7, 2021

† I was introduced to Gene when I was applying for the position of State Field Manager in 2007. When Gene stood up to introduce himself, I certainly had to look up to him because of his stature. Very soon, I began to look up to him not because of his height, but because of his leadership, compassion, and his dedication to SPJST members, to those who worked with and for him in the Insurance Department. Gene could be relied on any time I needed help with a large project or some mundane day-today task. He gave of his time, energy, and expertise not because it was his job, but because he wanted to. He was never too busy to simply sit down and talk to you as a friend, a boss, or as a mentor no matter what was on his schedule. Gene will be missed by those who knew and loved him. Although his physical presence will no longer be at the SPJST lodges or in the Home Office, his spirit and the memories of him will always be present. I am sure he is sitting with loved ones and friends from SPJST reminiscing about all the great times he enjoyed and sharing a lifetime of memories of SPJST. —Hiram Dixon Honorary Supreme Lodge Vice President

† Gene McBride always had a big smile and warm greeting every time we saw him. He and his wife visited our lodge and district many times. He was easy to work with, and I am glad I had the chance to know him. —Annie Vahalik District Six Director † Gene was a pleasure to work with. His jovial spirit always made your day better. —Roy W. Vajdak Controller † I will always remember Gene’s friendly disposition and his smile. —Sandra Dubcak Executive Assistant to the President/CEO † Gene hired me on October 16, 2000, and on October 17, I realized I had made a friend for life.

Gene was a strong and knowledgeable leader who loved SPJST in its entirety; he loved the insurance team (staff and agents), the youth/fraternal, the lodge system, and all the members. He was the embodiment of SPJST. His love of Frances was HUGE - as was the love for the rest of his family. If you were around him long, he would share the stories of love and laughter of his kids, grandkids, and greats! He made coming to work a pleasure and always greeted you each morning with a big smile and “How are you?” We had many conversations about our commonalities and love of hunting, fishing, and working in the yard. It’s sad to know that I will never hear him say, “Mrs. Powell, what’s your biggest problem” to which I would respond “You.” He would just laugh and say, “Well, you have a pretty big problem then!” So many memories and great times flood my memory when I think of Gene. Like Bob Hope said, “Thanks for the memories.”

Geno, my friend, I will see ya later, and we will make sure the fish are bitin’. —Doni Powell Underwriter

† Brother Gene had two families in this life. His biological family — the family into which he was born, his wife and his children — and his SPJST family which he grew into and embraced. To that first family — and on behalf of our great extended SPJST Family — our heartfelt condolences are with you. Gene was born into a depression era family, the youngest of three children. In spite of the adversities that he faced, Gene always strived to achieve something better for himself and for those closest to him. Gene loved his family, and they loved him. He was the man everyone turned to for support. And, of course, he adored his Frances. Both Gene and Frances loved to go out dancing when they lived Ennis. In fact, their first real exposure to SPJST was when Leta and Gordon Phillips

used to bring Gene and Frances along as guests to the dances hosted by SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. On one such occasion, Gene noticed a sign that was posted in the hall entry that stated, “Members and Guests Welcome.” That was the prompt that caused Gene to ask, “Well, what if we want to come out here sometime, and we don’t have a member with us?” That was all the push that it took for Gene and Frances to sign up as members of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. One thing led to another and in very short order, Brother Gene and Frances were active members of the lodge. Gene put his social skills and business ambition to work and became an SPJST sales agent for the Ennis lodge. The members of Lodge 25 must have liked what they saw because soon after that they elected Gene to serve as their lodge president. Serving as a lodge president – especially a lodge that maintains a property and busy schedule – has got to be a labor of love . . . and indeed it was! Wanting to show their support — and knowing that SPJST had deep roots in the Texas Czech community — Frances and dutiful son, Rusty, enrolled in evening Czech classes at Hill College in

Hillsboro. Gene also took in a few sessions. I don’t believe they became proficient in the language; however, their heart was in the right place! Gene enjoyed selling and during his tenure as an SPJST sales agent, he enrolled 244 men, women, boys, and girls as members. In addition to being an SPJST Top Producer, Gene was also an RVOS property insurance sales agent. To hear his son Rusty tell it, “Gene was always looking for a way to get people together for an activity or an event where he could make a sale.” Gene’s success as a salesman is what prompted Vice President Joe B. Hejny to hire him in 1978 as SPJST State Field Manager, a title which he held until he was elected SPJST Vice President at the 2000 Convention held in Temple – a position which Gene held until he made the decision to retire in 2014. When Gene took on the position of State Field Manager, he and Frances set up the family household in the Bruceville-Eddy community where he also made it his job to get involved in the business affairs of the town. This passion for service led to Gene being elected mayor of Bruceville-Eddy along

with appointments to the positions of municipal judge and fire chief. Both Gene and Frances also served as EMT volunteers while residing in BrucevilleEddy. Additionally — and this should come as no surprise — Gene was instrumental in the chartering of SPJST Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy in 1992. The formation of Lodge 200 led to lasting friendships and partnerships between members of that lodge. In particular, I recall the Willow Flats Cooking Team that was comprised of Lodge 200 members Bob Miracle, Doug Roming, and Gene McBride. In the World of Barbecue, these three gentlemen were considered true Pitmasters. They had mastered their techniques to create great barbecue and were extraordinarily willing to share their culinary gifts with friends, family, and community. In later years, Brother Gene partnered with Allen Trigg and his wife, Shirley, on the Double Tree Cookers Team. And, of course, Frances was always there by his side. Routinely, Gene found ways to combine his two companion worlds — that of SPJST and of barbecue. In particular, I recall SPJST’s 100th Anniversary

Celebration at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton and the impressive 100-team cookoff that Gene orchestrated on behalf of the SPJST. As head of SPJST’s Sales and Marketing area, Gene was close to his staff. He was a colleague and friend to many. May honor be given to his memory now and forever. —Brian Vanicek President/CEO

† The Supreme Lodge did well in placing Gene McBride in the position of State Field Manager in 1979. He served SPJST in many capacities, and he will be missed. He was loyal and a hard worker with great organizational skills and highly talented at marketing. He put his talent to good use when he organized Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy which was highly positive for SPJST and that community. Gene’s organizational skills were illustrated by his community service in Bruceville-Eddy in many capacities including being selected JP Court Judge. Gene excelled in marketing SPJST and our products. On a lighter side, he

was a master of the pit in doing barbecue. I recall he donated a pickup bed full of his cookoff trophies to be repurposed by a youth organization. By the way, I still use the winning recipe he shared with me for doing ribs. Gene was a loyal friend and colleague. He left a positive mark on SPJST. He was a fraternalist in every sense of the word. —Leonard Mikeska Chief Financial Officer

as I was the underwriter for the Insurance Department, and we shared another room together. Gene was also voted in as District Two President, and we worked together during that time, too. All in all, we had great times together as employees of the Insurance Department. He will be missed so very much. Rest in peace, Brother Gene! —Ruth Hanusch Fraternal Department Assistant

† Gene McBride . . . I remember when he was hired by Mr. Joe B. Hejny. Mr. Hejny was having health issues and needed a field manager to go visit with the sales agents as he no longer could make the trips himself. First, he hired Gene then Silas Smith to help out also. We were all together in one big area in the back where two other girls and I were working. It was a pleasure to have Gene and Silas working with us. We had a lot of fun back then. Then I had the time to be with Gene

† My sincere sympathy to Frances and all of the family on the passing of SPJST Honorary Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride. Gene meant the world to me; he was my boss for 12 years from 2000 to 2012 as I was State Field Representative in the SPJST Insurance Department under his vice presidency . . . and he was the best a person could have. He was genuinely passionate for SPJST and always worked towards the best for the organization. He helped me

to be a better person, and I will always remember his encouragement and confidence in me. He loved SPJST, and I so enjoyed listening to his stories of his state field manager days prior to his election and duties as Vice President. He worked diligently through his years as Vice President and was always thinking ahead to better SPJST through the Insurance Department. I worked hard out in the field, always wanting him to be proud of my management of the training of agents and good business and continued membership for SPJST. He was a good and sincere man and appreciated for his 35 years of loyalty to SPJST. A great boss and a good friend through all, he will be dearly missed. My thoughts, prayers, and condolences. May he rest in eternal peace. —Karen Kaspar Honorary District Six Director

† On my first day as State Youth Director, I was sitting behind my desk slightly overwhelmed. Suddenly, I hear

a loud knock on my door. It was Mr. McBride. He wished me well, said he looked forward to working with me to grow the youth program, reminded me that his name was ‘Gene’ - and not ‘Mr. McBride,’ - and handed me a note that read: “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.” —1 Timothy 4:12 I have so many wonderful memories of the times I shared with Gene. I will forever treasure those times. Gene was a highly engaged Home Office staff member, always ready to provide advice and perspective on any issue - and willing to lend helping hands to every project. I will miss Gene. He changed the dynamic wherever he was, with his tremendous sense of humor, warmth, and caring nature. When Gene was involved, you knew everything would be better. He was simply incomparable. — Melanie Zavodny Vice President of Communications —SPJST—

Get to Know District Seven Youth Counselor April Howard

District Seven Youth Counselor April Howard was born in what was once a small German community between Austin and San Antonio called New Braunfels to Roy and Theresa Haag. She is the only girl, stuck between two boys - Chris and Jonathan - and a lifelong member of SPJST Hill Country Lodge 185, New Braunfels. Growing up in New Braunfels, April spent many days and nights on the waterways of New Braunfels swimming, tubing, rafting, and camping with family and friends. To this day, just the smell of the lakes and rivers joined with the sound of the croaking frogs at night is enough to put her heart at ease. April has always been active, a mover and shaker with a love for music. It is said that she danced right out of her mother’s belly the day she was born. In elementary school, she participated in Kinderchoir, where children are taught to sing and dance German songs. She also participated in 4-H with sewing and baking, winning grand champion in the 1986 Comal County Youth Show for her cookie entry. Her parents signed her up for Hermann Sons dance to get some of her energy out until middle school, where she learned to play the clarinet and

twirled in the marching band. With her newfound music abilities, her father started the “Village Family Band” which played at the family restaurant, Wurstfest, and once even at her own school. In high school, April continued to play clarinet in the marching and symphonic band, but she decided it wasn’t enough, so she added high school choir to the mix. She was involved in several clubs in high school including Future Homemakers of America (FHA), Home Economics COOP, Business Professionals of America (BPA), Yearbook, German Club, and SPJST. All this involvement helped with competing in Youth Achievement Day (YAD) through the years. There wasn’t a category April did not compete in, with talent being her favorite. She was so excited to become a teenager in order to become a LeaderIn-Training (LIT). With this rite of passage, she learned things such as CPR, first aid, low ropes, high ropes, how to lead games, and make longtime friendships. After LIT camp, the anticipation would begin with plans to meet up with her friends at State YAD which was a two-day affair at the time. Saturday was the royalty competition and dance. Sunday was the craft and talent competitions. SPJST continued in April’s life. She became a camp lifeguard and chaperone as well as an SPJST sales agent when she turned 18 to keep Lodge 185, New Braunfels growing, and she continues to sell SPJST certificates today. She started as assistant youth leader as a teenager, has served as treasurer for her lodge for several years now, and serves as District Seven Youth Counselor today.

April graduated from Texas State University San Marcos with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. One piece of interesting information is that she has two diplomas. The school was changing its name from Southwest Texas University, so she received one from each university. SPJST has always been in April’s life. She says: “SPJST was like going to school. It was just what I did, and I loved it! I went to monthly meetings where I learned how to conduct meetings, socialized, met new people, worked in teams, learned new crafts and talents for District YAD, discovered that youth may or may not be good public speakers, went to State YAD, and the most beloved of all, CAMP. Camp is where it was! I would count down the days until the day we would leave for camp. At camp, the youth learned how to ride horses, dance to ‘Popcorn’ with Ms. Maxine, synchronized swimming with Ms. Frankie. We learned how to hide our leftovers from Ms. Cornelius, raise and lower a flag in the worst conditions, tell a good ghost story, cross Christy’s Crossing with no fear, change clothes on top of a bunk bed without being seen, lived without AC, crafted with the best of them, sang camp songs at the top of our lungs under the stars, and bond. I was one of the lucky ones to be able to have my mom chaperone camp for 39 years, with her only recently retiring her title as chaperone/snack lady. Not too many people can say that. “SPJST has been a very big part of my life. It helped create who I am today. Because of SPJST, I am a leader, cherish heritage, give back, value camp, and know the importance of the three F’s:

family, friends, and fun! I have friends all over the United States. There aren’t too many festivals that I go to that I do not run into someone from my SPJST family. If I vacation in Florida, I know someone. If my plane is grounded in

Houston, I know someone. If I blow a tire in Dallas, I know someone. If I have a dead battery in San Angelo - you got it; I know someone. SPJST is where it’s at!”

Učme se Česky Let us Study Czech Lekce Třínáctá Lesson 13 Accent (stress) and Intonation In this lesson, we will discuss some rules and guides to speaking correct Czech, and using stress and intonation. 1. In Czech, the accent is invariably on the first syllable: PRÁ-ce, SKÁ-kat, ŠKO-la. 2. In the case of three or more syllables, there is a secondary accent on the third syllable: PRÁ-co-VÁti, VZDĚ-la-VÁ-ti, zA-palo-VÁ-ti.

6. Prepositions are pronounced in full if the word following begins with the same sound: VE Vídni, KE kostelu, SE sestrou, ZE země. The reason for this is because double consonants are pronounced as single consonants in Czech: (Anna, cenný). A double vv or double kk are no pronounceable. However, in a word like nejjemnější, the two j’s are separated because nej is a superlative prefix. More on superlatives later. 7. Although the accent is always on the first syllable, it does not lengthen a short vowel following it, and we must not yield to the temptation to stress long vowels outside the first syllable. The length or shortness of a vowel has no bearing on the stress.

4. If the preposition consists of only one consonant - v, z, s, k, it must be joined in a single sound with the word following k vám kvám - not ke vám: V Novém Yorku (not ve Novém Yorku).

8. Stress is not as strongly marked in Czech as in English, German, or Russian. The intonation (melody of the speech - its “musicalness”), that is, the rise and fall in the pitch of the voice, is not made up from as many tunes and patterns as in the above three languages. The voice does not rise to as high a pitch, nor does it fall low as readily as in the above languages. In these respects, the Czech language, may be said to be rather “flat” and monotone in character.

5. Before other groups of consonants these prepositions are said in full and accented: VE středu, KE mně, SE mnou, ZE školy.

9. The outstanding feature of Czech speech is the contrast between long and short vowels, alternating in succession, giving it rather staccato character.

3. One syllable prepositions form one single unit with the word following, and are always accented: Do Prahy (doprahy), po válce (poválce).

Máte dnes MNO ho PRÁce? POT-kal jste pana DOKtora? A-no, pot-ká-vám ho VEL-mi ČASto. 10. Finally, this rule should probably be observed: if you’re not sure which syllable is to be accented, don’t accent any; this will be better than stressing the wrong one. Don’t worry too much about stresses and intonation at this point, but make it a part of each lesson as we move along. S

Sliby Ve slibech buď opatrný, věrný a svědomitý. Dítě nemajíc žádného jmění, nemůže mnoho slíbiti. Jak krásná jest to chvála pro člověka, když se říká o něm, že jest spolehlivý, věrný a pevný ve slibech svých. A člověk takový může mnoho dobrého působiti, i jest příkladem, jenž lásku k pravdě, pevnost mysli, věrnost a důvěru lidí k lidem kolem sebe rozšiřuje. —SPJST—
