“W
e can find meaning and reward by serving some higher purpose than ourselves, a shining purpose, the illumination of a thousand points of light . . . we all have something to give.” —President George H.W. Bush Founder of Points of Light National Volunteer Week is coming up on April 17 to 23, 2022. The theme for National Volunteer Week is Celebrate Service – an opportunity to shine a light on the people and causes that inspire us to serve. Volunteerism empowers individuals to find their purpose, to take their passion and turn it into meaningful change. When each of us, in our own way, answers the call to make a difference, we make progress in solving our most persistent problems, and create stronger communities and a more just society. National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognize and thank volunteers who lend us their time, talent, voice, and resources to meet the critical needs of our communities. Their stories serve to inspire others to take action, to realize their power to make a difference, and be a force that transforms the world. National Volunteer Week is a time to celebrate the impact of volunteer service on our communities. The local events, volunteer projects and social media conversations that take place during this week demonstrate that every individual has the power to make a difference, creating healthy communities in vibrant, participatory societies. National Volunteer Week was es-
tablished in 1974 and has grown exponentially each year, with thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week. It is an opportunity to honor the impact of all those who do good in SPJST and communities, and who inspire others to make a difference and improve the world. Cars & Guitars This week’s Vestnik includes forms and information about Cars & Guitars which is set for Saturday, April 2 at Camp Kubena in Ledbetter, Texas. I hope that you will plan to attend this inaugural event that we hope will showcase and share our beautiful Camp Kubena to members and friends. A big thank you for a tremendous job to Delisle Doherty for making our insurance program a tremendous success. Also, the new program of renewing annuities out of penalty phase has reduced

It is refreshing to know we will be profitable for the first time in four years. AQS, our investment advisors, have done a tremendous job of upgrading our portfolio to have us prepared for the coming years which we have no idea of which direction it will go in terms of interest rates. Our members should be happy to know we are prepared. Thanks to all directors for being so committed and for having their hearts in the right place for SPJST. We can now have excellent discussion and debate without someone taking it personal. When you have your business hat on — and not let personal feelings get in the way — much more can be accomplished. I am looking forward to the days and years ahead where SPJST will be back in the forefront where it belongs! Fraternally, Donnie Victorick District One Director •••

Commentary It was a very emotional day as Jerome Dressler, Robert Mayfield, and I moved out the last files, pictures, plaques, and awards from the hall at Lodge 172, Pasadena. It was built in the early 1980s, and those lodge members/officers had spent countless hours attending and participating at meetings, dances, many other events, and doing maintenance. As we went through old boxes, we saw so many photos of Jerome’s father. There were also several awards, mayor’s proclamations, and citations from the city of Pasadena to the lodge for all of its fundraising efforts and community events. Lodge 172 truly had an impact on that community for many years. Lodge 172’s building was

an icon on Preston Street. As we loaded some of the last boxes, I reentered the front door where a sign over the door in large bold face read, “Vítáme Vás.” It was difficult knowing this was one of the last times any of us would walk through those doors. Jerome reminisced about the heyday of the lodge in the 1980s and 1990s with the well-attended dances that were held at the hall. Lodge 172 was the place to be during those times. The dances there were only rivaled by the legendary Gilly’s honkytonk made famous from Urban Cowboy in Pasadena. The hall was a tribute to those Lodge 172 members who were able to do the hard work that raised the funds to build such a large facility. The dance floor was so large you could only do one round on it per song. At its January meeting, the Executive Committee watched a video that SPJST helped fund called Dance Hall Days: A Documentary on Texas Dance Halls. Even though Lodge 172, Pasadena may not have been as old as those featured in the video, it certainly will be missed in the community by those who wore out many a pair of boots on that dance floor. I know that building will forever be in Jerry’s and Robert’s hearts. Fraternally, Bradley Stavinoha District Five Director •••

Put Health and Wellness on Your 2022 Calendar
Editor’s Note: SPJST’s emphasis on health and wellness complements the “fiscal fitness” aspect of SPJST. The goal is to support, motivate and encourage the physical and emotional wellbeing of our SPJST members and employees. In the February 14 issue, we announced that Gallagher – the nationwide health and risk management – was making available to SPJST and its members a wealth of health and wellbeing information. Last month we focused on the importance of creating a more active lifestyle. This time, our focus is on explaining how making some simple dietary choices that can go a long way towards helping you build a stronger immune system. On Building a Stronger Immune System The old saying “You are what you eat” ties into the notion that to be fit and healthy, you need to eat good food. It is well-known that having a strong immune system makes it easier for the body to ward off harmful organisms like bacteria and viruses. Since the ar-
rival of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a lot of focus on how to strengthen immune function. A 2021 systematic review and metaanalysis identified vitamin D as being associated with improved clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19. Conversely, people who were deficient in vitamin D saw a heightened immune response and poorer recovery rates. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is mostly known for its role in bone health and calcium metabolism, but it has other functions as well. A deficiency of vitamin D has been linked to a higher incidence of autoimmunity as well as a higher susceptibility to infection. Similarly, there appears to be an inverse relationship between vitamin D and the rate of infections. What this means is, maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D may offer some additional protection. Some of the most common symptoms associated with low vitamin D levels include fatigue, muscle weakness, and mood changes.

The biggest source of vitamin D is through sun exposure. Sunlight triggers a series of chemical reactions in your skin that lead to the production of vitamin D. Spending as little as 10 to 15 minutes in the sun a few times a week is enough to saturate blood levels.
ness on your 2022 calendar. We build on that theme with the March 29 Fraternal Focus online webcast with the emphasis on healthy eating and what we can all do in order to sustain healthy eating habits. Be sure to join online for the presentation! Based on your posi-
Few foods are naturally rich in vitamin D. The best sources are the flesh of fatty fish and fish liver oils. Smaller amounts are found in egg yolks, cheese, and beef liver. Vitamin D-enhanced mushrooms are the only non-animal food product with substantial amounts of bioavailable vitamin D and, as such, have the potential to be a primary source of dietary vitamin D for vegans and vegetarians. One of the best ways to get enough Vitamin D in your diet is to eat a variety of healthy foods from all of the food groups, including some fortified foods, including cereals, milk, and yogurt. The topic of our first SPJST Fraternal Focus Online webcast on January 24 was all about putting health and well-
tive feedback, once again, our guest presenter will be Joan Vanicek, who is the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention program manager at Central Texas Veterans Health Care System in Temple. The online programs are approximately an hour in length and include a wealth of information relating to SPJST activities as well as our regular focus topics. It’s Your Life
A Little Discipline Goes a Long Way The past two articles have been about creating habits that can make your life healthier without spending large sums of money and investing your bank account into supplements, special diets, exercise programs, etc. It was simple habits that everyone can do everyday without costing a penny. Helping others, it’s that simple. Being a disciple to others. Then it was taking control of your mind. No cost there either. Once you learn to feel good about helping people and take control of your mind, it now takes a little discipline to get you anywhere you want. As I mentioned in the last article, I am 5’7” and walked around carrying 220 pounds, but I was healthy. It didn’t matter how healthy I was, with that 40-inch waist, comfort was not going to be in the cards for me. I knew if I came this far with my health then a little discipline could go a long way. I decided to take 10 minutes at the end of every night and do one exercise, and not intense exercise. Each night it was a different exercise. One night it would be squats (believe me, it was two squats and rest, two more and rest 😊), then curls from my couch, then lunges, etc. One exercise a night and nothing more. As soon as that 10 minutes was up, I would drink a bottle of water and go straight to bed. It didn’t matter what time of night, it was the last thing I did before I went to bed. Within six months, I was down to 150
pounds with a 32-inch waist. Discipline, that’s all it took. No diet, no change in eating habits, no special pills . . . nothing but discipline. Now I do 10 minutes of simple exercise after dinner almost every night. This is done just to keep my strength up and keep me flexible. I used that discipline to lose weight without paying for a diet plan. But you can use a simple discipline method for anything in life. You can use it to relax every night and let your worries go away. You can use it just to stay flexible. You can take a walk every night. Do a puzzle. Watch your favorite show without letting anyone interrupt you. Work with your favorite charity. A little discipline can make your life healthier in mind, body, and spirit. It all starts with creating good habits. These habits will help create a sound mind and healthy body. This will allow you to become more disciplined. Discipline can go a long way. It can take you anywhere you want. “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.” —Jim Rohn My door is always open; figuratively and literally. Stay blessed, Delisle L. Members enjoy a cultural gem in San Diego submitted By donna kaspar of Lodge 29, Taylor
I’d like to share with Věstník readers a wonderful Czech connection in Southern California. My husband (a San Diego native) and I decided to settle here in his hometown after we both retired from the Navy. I was new to California and missed all the Czech heritage events, music, people, language, etc. from my younger years in Texas. I looked around San Diego for anything Czech. Eventually, when visiting the city’s beautiful Balboa Park, I stumbled across an international community of “cottages”—a consortium of about 35 mini museums representing cultures around the world. One of these cottages was called The House of Czech and Slovak Republics. I learned a bit about the organization and decided I wanted to become a member and join in their activities. Before long, I met lots of wonderful folks dedicated to preserving their Czech heritage right here in San Diego. Members are required to “host” at the cottage at least three times a year. This involves opening and closing our little museum, posting the flags, serving ethnic snacks, receiving donations, and engaging with the public for five hours on your appointed weekend days. When my mom Lillian Kaspar (Taylor, Texas) visits, we love to take our turn hosting at the Czech cottage. We greet visitors, provide information, and answer questions from the con-

tinuous flow of visitors. I enjoy taking my accordion and playing some polkas and waltzes, as well as other ethnic tunes for the diverse array of visitors. I also love to see the joy on the faces of the children when I play “Mary Had a Little Lamb” or “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” and they marvel at the sight and sound of this rather unusual instrument. On Sunday afternoons between March and mid-November, lawn programs and other special events are held on the outdoor stage from 2 to 3 p.m. Each national group presents its own program once a year featuring the songs and dances of that nation. The San Diego Accordion Band (a subset of the larger San Diego Accordion Club) performs for Czech Heritage Day in Balboa Park in October 2021.
Back in October 2021, the San Diego Accordion Club participated in the Czech Lawn Program. I’m a member of the accordion club and helped coordinate our performance. We played Škoda Lásky, Má Roztomilá Baruška, Sirotek, Tancuj Tancuj, Pod Tým Naším Okénečkem, and Červená Sukýnka. For those interested, here’s a little more background on this beautiful green space in the heart of our city. San Diego’s Balboa Park emerged as the city prepared for the 1915 Panama Exposition. Twenty years later, the House of Pacific Relations (HPR) was founded as a not-for-profit community organization dedicated to furthering cooperation and understanding between national groups in the United States. HPR consists of more than 35 national groups, many of which have their own small cottage in Balboa Park. These cottages, furnished and staffed by organization members, offer visitors a delightful window into each country’s culture, history, and traditions. The cottages are open to the public every Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Light refreshments are prepared and served by the volunteer hosts, and donations are welcomed to defray costs. I love spending time at the cottages. Visitors are always smiling, happy, enjoying the beautiful park and the charming cottages. The cottages were closed for several months during the Covid crisis, but are now open once again and enjoyed by San Diego residents and visitors from across the states and around the world. —SPJST—

Czech-American TV invites readers to view programs Dear SPJST Members and Friends, We are a compatriot non-profit organization based in the USA broadcasting cultural-educational TVA shows. Czech-American TV (CATVUSA) has been educating people all over the world about the Czech Republic for free for almost 19 years. The content of our programs is focused on several categories, namely the introduction of the Czech regions, the highlighting of Czech traditions, and the presentation of Czech dishes. Our mission is to educate and inform non-Czechs about Czech culture, traditions, and folklore from Bohemia, Moravia, and Moravian-Silesia. The program is broadcast on cable TV in 60 US cities and reaches more than 2.6 million households. Thousands of visitors also watch our broadcasts on the Internet, where we reach more than 100,000 viewers worldwide on a yearly basis. Our broadcasts are available to the public for free of charge, stored in the archive of Czech-American TV web pages. Czech-American TV broadcasts solely in English, so it searches for its viewers via the Internet all over the world. Outside of the US, we also reach people interested in the Czech Republic. Canada, Australia, England, Germany, and Asia typically have the highest numbers of viewers; other than that, we reach viewers in countries all over the world. Our organization has obtained many references, from these partners: http://www.catvusa.com/partners/ You may find more information about us at http://www.catvusa.com The main objective of our activities is to spread the reputation of the Czech Republic abroad, in a completely nonprofit way. We do this with pure patriotism and enthusiasm for making the Czech Republic better known, and volunteers help us do so without any reward. The main motivation of all contributors is the selfless promotion of the Czech Republic, not personal interests. We regularly cooperate with students from Czech universities – University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Technical University in Prague, Silesian Uni-

At this time, we are still trying to raise awareness of our programs and spread the good reputation of the Czech Republic abroad, and thus extend the interest of the public about the Czech Republic and mainly promote it as a safe destination, which should also have a positive impact on tourism. In the Czech-American TV project, we promote not only the historical and cultural monuments of the Czech lands, but also the Czech lifestyle and cultural customs and traditions. Our broadcast in English is aiming at two main groups of interest Czech compatriots who want to stay in touch with their country of origin, and foreigners interested in the Czech Republic, mostly tourists. CATV is about to celebrate the 19th anniversary of its existence and has created a great audience base during these years. It has become very popular and has great reception. Viewers are so excited about CATV that they call the main office or write emails with supplementary questions about the regions shown in broadcasts, and many of them are also planning a visit to the Czech Republic. Nowadays, we are the only organization in the world that makes audiovisual programs about the entire Czech Republic in English. We are therefore a unique audiovisual TV show that can be viewed over the Internet from anywhere around the world. We write to ask whether you would be willing to help us with the promotion of the CATV internet programs, by printing the flyers linked to below and posting them in your office or public waiting rooms and by sharing information on your websites and social networks such as Facebook. In Memory of Bette Hurta
In Memory of Edmond Kelarek
Bette Drews Hurta, a 34-year resident of Jersey Village, Texas, passed away at the age of 79 on Thursday, February 3, 2022. Visitation was Friday, February 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Funeral service was Saturday, February 19 at 11 a.m. at Memorial Oaks. RefreshBette Hurta ments were provided after the burial services. Bette was born on December 3, 1942, to Bill and Lilly Jaster Drews. She was a graduate of Sam Houston High School class of 1961. One Saturday evening while out dancing at Bill Mraz Dance Hall, she met the love of her life - Jerry. They were married on December 6, 1963. As a stay-at-home mother, Bette found joy in attending her children’s little league games, serving as a den mother for Cub Scouts, and volunteering as a Bluebird leader. As her children grew into adulthood, Bette remained active in the community as a member of Advent Lutheran Church, SPJST Lodge 88, Houston and the Birthday Club Sisters, additionally working at Collier Library for 15 years. Bette cultivated a love for the Houston Astros - particularly ‘little’ Jose Altuve - and for traveling with Jerry to parks in their RV. Ultimately, Bette valued her family the most. Some of her best memories were of sitting around the table with family members playing dominos and card games. Bette was preceded in death by beloved daughter Valerie; loving husband of 45 years, Jerry; numerous brothers and sisters on Jerry’s side of the family; and brother-in-law Jim Jankowiak. She is survived by son Kirby; daughter-in-law Lori; grandchildren Cameron and Alyssa; siblings Diana (Jim) Jankowiak and Jerry (Diane) Drews; and many nieces and nephews. The family requests that memorial donations be made to any public library. —SPJST—
Edmond Jerry Kelarek, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 25, 2022, surrounded by his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all. Service was Tuesday, March 1 at 10 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church in Temple. Edmond Kelarek Visitation was Monday, February 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. with the rosary beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Scanio Harper Funeral Home in Temple. Edmond was known for his love of family, especially his two granddaughters, Hannah and Sarah Kate. He loved to cook barbecue ribs. Many meals were cooked on his “pit” at the lake on his barge and in his backyard by the pool. Edmond had the most generous spirit. He always gave to others, never expecting anything in return. In retirement, Edmond and Evelyn enjoyed cruising to Alaska and the Caribbean, casinos, and watching any events Hannah and Sarah Kate were involved in. Edmond was born on December 31, 1930 in Seaton, Texas, to John and Angeline Andel Kelarek. He attended school in Seaton. He was a veteran and served in the Korean War. He was owner and operator of the Specialty Muffler Shop for 38 years. Anyone who ever visited his muffler shop knew how meticulous he was about his shop. It was so clean that you could eat off the floor. After retirement, he worked for Smetana Construction for three years. Edmond was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church. He was a third and fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3444. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Smetana Kelarek; sons Kenny Kelarek and his wife Jennifer of Salado, Kevin Kelarek of Temple, and Kelly Kelarek of Temple; and granddaughters Hannah Kelarek of Deer Park and Sarah Kate Kelarek of Salado. —SPJST—
