VĚSTNÍK more than $100,000 in insurance, the actual cost for $1,000 is lower than if you buy a $25,000 policy.

From the Desk of Delisle L. Doherty SPJST Vice President of Sales and Marketing

It’s Your Life

5 Reasons to Buy Life Insurance Before You are 30 Frequently, the least reached age group for life insurance products is those under the age of 30. However, there are some significant benefits for this group that can be an advantage when shopping for life insurance coverage. 1. Easier to qualify for coverage. A great reason to buy life insurance before a person is age 30 is to lock in coverage while they are relatively healthy. The cost of insurance rises as a person develops health conditions. While a young person may believe they will never develop any health conditions, the odds are against them. For example, while just 11 percent of men and 7 percent of women ages 20 to 34 have high blood pressure, 37 percent of men and 35 percent of women ages 45 to 54 have the condition, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Among 55- to 64-year-olds, 54 percent of men and 53 percent of women have high blood pressure. 2. Cheaper life insurance rates. Life insurance rates increase as you age because your life expectancy is shorter with each passing birthday. A 29year-old female nonsmoker could pay less than $39/month for a $500,000 20year term policy with a 10-year guarantee. That’s $9,360 for $500,000 over 20 years. But the lowest quote for a 40-yearold with the same characteristics and the same amount of coverage is over $60 per month. Children are at their lowest cost and healthiest point. They could never get anything lower, and the price never changes on a whole life policy. 3. Paying off student loans. Although government student loans

are generally forgiven upon the borrower’s death, private student loans generally are not. Some 1.4 million American students borrowed private loans in the 2011-2012 school year, according to the most recent data compiled by The Institute for College Access and Success. If there is a co-signer on the loan, the co-signers will likely have to pick up the burden in the event of death. Combined with grief, that’s a painfully heavy load to shoulder.

Little Humor for You . . . “There are worse things in life than death. Have you ever spent an evening with an insurance salesman?” —Woody Allen

My door is always open; figuratively and literally. Stay blessed, Delisle L. Doherty Vice President of Sales and Marketing 832-232-2049 —SPJST—

Please see the flyer below for complete details about the Lodge Incentive and Premium Refund Program. Celebrating Grandparents Grandparent’s Day is Sunday, September 11. Where would you be without them? Grandparents are special. They give us unconditional love, they make the best audience, and they are not afraid to be silly. Plan a special celebration for them.

2022 SPJST Lodge Enhanced Premium Refund Guidelines One of the most important financial benefits that the SPJST Executive Committee has extended to local lodges is the annual Premium Refund Program. The purpose of this program has been to help SPJST lodges keep their operations on a sound financial basis. The formula for calculating the refund is: 1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate in the lodge; and 2. 1.25% of the lodge’s annual earned premium. To receive the refund in early 2023, lodges must meet the following four-point criteria:

YEARS!

PRIZES

Hold Regular Lodge Meetings in Accordance with Section 74 of the SPJST By-Laws and Offer a Well-Rounded Fraternal Program.

Every lodge is required to hold regular meetings to discuss lodge business with its members. Service to each other — as fellow SPJST members — and service to the community is an important part of SPJST’s mission. Rather than mandating a specific number of fraternal activities that your lodge must accomplish in a given year in order to remain in good standing and qualify for incentives, the greater focus is on lodges working to host a healthy mix of “quality” events that bring value to SPJST’s community presence.

r 2.

Return All Paperwork. • Form 990 or Form 990-T for 2021 (due May 15, 2022) • Fraternal Activity Summaries (due January 15, 2023) • Updated Lodge Officer Listing (due January 15, 2023)

r 3.

Submit Routine News/Photos to the Vestnik.

Every lodge is required to submit news of upcoming events, lodge meetings, and/or meeting/event summaries and/or photographs to the Vestnik as well as to their local media. Youth submissions, member features, and obituaries can also be submitted to the Vestnik. Every lodge is required to have a submission in at least 4 of the 24 published Vestniks in 2022. Of course, the lodge may contribute to the Vestnik more frequently. Local news media features can also satisfy these requirements when the features are shared with the Vestnik (see contact details below).

A BIG ANNIVERSARY CALLS FOR

A BIG PRIZE DRAWING!

Vestniks are published on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Unless otherwise noted in the Vestnik, the deadline for submitting items for publication are the first and third Mondays of each month at 5 p.m. Articles and photos may be submitted in several ways: • Online at www.spjst.org under the “News” tab • Email to vestnik@spjst.org • Mail to SPJST Vestnik • PO Box 100 • Temple, TX 76503-0100 • Text to 254-534-0807

r 4.

Share Lodge/Member Activities and Stories on Social Media.

Lodges are encouraged to share lodge/member activities and stories on Facebook and/or Instagram. Some examples include lodge members serving a meal at a soup kitchen; members cleaning a cemetery; food drive for local pantry; hosting a heritage or cultural event; and contribution to non-profit organization. The Communication Department is available to assist with fulfilling the lodge’s social media requirement.

They spent many nights enjoying country music as she supported Melvin’s musical endeavors. If he wasn’t playing in the band, you would find the two of them dancing the night away. With the exception of four years when she was first married, she lived her entire life in New Berlin and was always extremely involved in all of the activities which occurred in New Berlin. She became an officer of the New Berlin Community Club at an early age, and at her death, she was still the rental coordinator for the community center. Through the years, Joy was involved with all of the major community events including the bringing of East Central Water to the New Berlin area, the establishment of the New Berlin Volunteer Fire Department and the creation of the City of New Berlin. She was a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, assisted with Vacation Bible School, and either participated in or organized numerous food-related functions. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 258, Seguin. She left employment outside of the home to devote full-time to raising a

family. She was an active room mother, PTA member and booster club member to support her children’s school activities. She took great joy in attending all of her children’s and grandchildren’s ball games, banquets, and various activities through the years. She greatly enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and having them gather as often as possible. Her cooking and baking abilities were well recognized not only by friends and neighbors but also with the numerous awards she received. Her contributions to the volunteer fire department were acknowledged by being named Firefighter of the Year in 2012 and 2022 by the Guadalupe County Firefighters Association. She was thought of as a “second mom” by many members of the New Berlin VFD. She was known as the organizer of many fundraisers for the New Berlin VFD and the annual New Berlin Sausage Festival. Joy was preceded in death by her parents; brother Carl Dwight Koepp; nephew Carl Henry Koepp; son-in-law Brian Walters; brothers-in-law Henry Strey Jr. and Marvin Huth; and sister-inlaw Gertrude Huth. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Melvin Strey; daughter Kimberly Schlichting (Jeff); daughter Kelly Lindholm (Jon); and son Kurt Strey (Barbara); grandchildren Zachary Schlichting, Tucker Walters, Bode Walters, Briley Strey, Kinley Strey, Eric Lindholm, and Meagan Prince; grandson-at-heart Ethan Strzelczyk; nephews Jason Koepp and Marshall Strey (Barbara); nieces Shirley Winkelmann (Gerald), Sharon Schaefer (Ronnie), Deborah Price (Paul), and Karen Bradshaw (Paul); very best friend Karen Borgfeld; and numerous cousins, friends, and neighbors. —SPJST—

Lodge 142, Houston Youth Club partners with Supply Bridge Ministries to collect, box, send 45 self-care boxes to victims of natural disasters

In May, Lodge 142, Houston Youth Club chose to work with Supply Bridge Ministries as the second quarter charity project. This program collects self-care items, including shampoo, deodorant, lotion, razors, and more, and boxes up the items to send to families who have been victims of natural disasters. With the generous donation from our adult lodge, the youth were able to send 45 boxes as well as extra donated items to this pro-

gram and help out at least 45 different individuals who have lost their homes. Pictured above, the youth of Lodge 142 work in an assembly line to fold/make the boxes, fill the boxes with necessary items, and close them. Lodge 47, Seaton youth excited to attend SPJST summer camp Dear Vestnik Readers, After two years, I finally got to go back to camp! I had fun! My favorite part was the blob. We also got to see alpacas on the last night of camp. Andrew was my bunkmate. This weekend, we are doing YAD. I hope I get first place on some things so I can go to State. After YAD, we get to go to Galveston. I can’t wait! This week, we are doing Ram Camp with our friends. It is where we play games and go swimming. I guess I will see you in August. Fraternally Travis Ordogne, age 10 —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton youth enjoys summer activities Dear Vestnik Readers, I can touch the bottom of the pool at eight-feet deep when I’m swimming. We are doing Ram Camp right now. We get to swim at Ram Camp every day. Today, I played Pickleball. It was superduper-stupor fun. Pickleball is the same thing as tennis. Instead of using tennis rackets, we use super-duper-bigger ping-pong paddles. I was super good at it. I was better than my brother. I’m doing YAD this Sunday. I’m still working on my crafts. I hope I win something.

The Stavinoha magic gambler

One of the most treasured artifacts at the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple is the “Magic Gambler” automation. When wound up for music and a button for the mechanics is pulled, the device rolls miniature dice under the tiny brass dome. Part of the table drops down then pops back up via a spring. The family of the donor, Joseph Stavinoha, visited the Museum recently. Matriarch Anne Cowan, greatgranddaughter of Joseph, taught her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren about their family history and the Magic Gambler’s part in it. Anne, who resides in Temple, is pictured with her family and the Joseph Stavinoha “Magic Gambler” recently at the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center.

Proper nouns, that is, names of persons, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organi-

Example: Karel Dvořák, Wilsonovo nádraží, Dunaj, Angličan, Čechy, Smetanova opera, “Prodaná nevěsta”, etc., and Naše římsko-katolická cirkev; Veliká slovanská podporujíci jednota. Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech. S

A new exhibit, Moravian Glory: Preserving Our Brilliance, is on display at the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, 119 West French in Temple, through October 1. Susan Chandler, executive director of the museum, said the museum will celebrate the exhibit with an “official opening reception” from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 30. “This exhibit was created at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa,” Chandler said. “That museum was particularly interested in having Moravian Glory shown

With four seasons in the background, the stages of human life take place (childhood, youth, adulthood, and old age), and the exhibit depicts Maryška’s journey through each stage. The customs and traditions of the season are associated with Maryška’s life story, which are also in many ways typical to many other women in the 20th century. In the stories from her life, viewers will recall some important historical moments, such as world wars.
