Happy New Year
May the New Year bring joy and happiness to you and your family.
The Pursuit of Happiness
There was once a group of 100 people attending a seminar on personal development.
In the middle of their talk, the speaker stops and decides to run an impromptu group activity. He hands out a balloon to each attendee and tells them to write their name on it.
The balloons are then collected and placed in an adjacent room.
The speaker then instructs the 100 attendees to enter that room and, within five short minutes, find the balloon with their name on it.
Pandemonium breaks loose as they charge in, pushing and colliding with each other as they desperately search for their name.
The five minutes pass and nobody succeeds.
The speaker then tells each person to pick up any random balloon and give it the person whose name is written on it. Within a few minutes everyone has their balloon back.
He then said, “What just happened with those balloons is exactly what happens in our search for happiness. We frantically look for it all around us, not knowing where it is.”
“Yet our happiness lies in the happiness of others. By giving them their happiness, you get yours.”
Moral of the story:
Happiness and fulfilment rarely come from selfish pursuits, but almost always come from doing good deeds for others. By helping others, we help ourselves.
—Author Unknown

—Benjamin Franklin
“This year, be structured enough for success and achievement and flexible enough for creativity and fun.”

It’s Your Life
It’s Time for Your Annual Checkup
This year sure went fast. It seems the older we get, the faster time goes by. As the new year approaches, there are certain things we know we have to do every year. One thing on everyone’s list is annual checkups. When we think of annual checkups, we think doctors, dentists, A/C and heating units, etc. One of the most important things that need to look at each year, which is the most neglected, is your insurance policies.
We buy life insurance, health insurance, auto, homeowners, retirement plans, long term care, Medicare supplement plans, and even pet insurance. Insurance is so much part of our lives we just assume everything will be there for us when we need it. The truth is if you don’t keep it updated, you are sure to have problems when you need it the most. It doesn’t matter what insurance you have, every year you should do a checkup. Life happens in an instance; you should always be ready. From a life insurance and annuities standpoint, here are 25 questions you should ask (this also is good for other insurances):
1. Are the names, addresses, dates, etc. correct on all your policies? People move, they get married, get divorced. Incorrect names and addresses will create problems in the future.
2. Are birthdates and ages up to date?
3. Do you know how much cash value you have? This can help if you get into a financial need situation. You may be able to borrow against it.
4. Are your beneficiaries up to date? If they changed names, addresses, or are not around, this could create problems
when it may be needed most. We are leery about giving social security numbers, but this is the one number that identifies a person their entire life. If their info is no longer valid, they can still be identified by the social security number.
5. Do you know why you bought the policy in the first place? It may be the wrong one or not enough now.
6. Do you know what your options are? If you need less insurance, you may be able to take a reduced paid up policy, or get a loan, etc.
7. Is your insurance still adequate for your needs? You may have gotten married, had a child, purchased a house, bought property, got a better job. All these could mean you need more insurance. A review can help determine what you need today. You don’t want to leave them short when they need money the most.
8. Is your premium payment schedule convenient for your situation? Maybe going to quarterly or changing your date may work better for your budget.
9. Were you rated? If you were, you may be able to have it looked at again to
get lower premiums. For example, if you quit smoking over a year ago, you may qualify for a standard rate.
10. Are the riders still needed? You may be able to save money by eliminating unnecessary riders.
11. What is your home or business status? If you are self-employed, you may be able get a key man policy. With partners, is a buy/sell agreement in place? Maybe you have enough employees for a group policy.
12. Do you know the Social Security laws? If you take money from the policy, it could affect your social security. Check with www.ssa.gov
13. Did you assign your certificate to someone else, or do you still have control of it? If you assigned it to someone else, make sure they are doing what is right for your situation.
14. Do you have a proper estate plan in place? You may want to look at annuities to protect some of the money from your estate.
15. Are you taking full advantage of trusts?
16. Have there been any changes to you coverage at work? You should never count on your work insurance. If you leave the job (quit or retire) or get laid off or fired, you no longer have the insurance. By then, it may be very expensive to purchase.
17. Do you have a will in place?
18. If you have a term policy, would it be better to convert it to a whole life?
19. If you have a term policy, do you have riders with it? Can they be removed?
20. Do you have any outstanding certificate loans that could affect your death benefit? You may want to work to pay it back or get additional insurance to offset the loan.
21. Have any polices lapsed that could be re-instated?
22. Has your health changed? If you have a term and you are not as healthy, you may be able to convert it to a whole life at your healthy price.
23. Do you have provisions in place if both parents die together (for those with kids)?
24. Are there changes in your familykids, grandkids, new spouse, etc.? The best time to get insurance is when they are children. The rates are locked at the lowest price they can ever purchase. You can get up to five times more insurance for a child at the same price it would be at the age of 30.
25. Any major financial changes? New job, promotion, laid off, new home, shale on land, lottery winnings, etc.
This is the most important checkup you can do every year. The last thing you want to do is have problems when you need your life insurance the most. You don’t want your beneficiaries to have problems you left behind.
The best and easiest way is to call your agent and have them review this with you. If you don’t know your agent, we will certainly assign someone to take care of you. We will even review any current life insurance or annuity certificates with other companies. As disciples of Christ, it is our job to help you any way we can.
Life happens in an instance. Will you be ready?
My door is always open; figuratively and literally. Stay blessed, Delisle L. Doherty Vice President of Sales and Marketing 832-232-2049
From the State Fraternal Director
Adult and Youth Member News and Information for January
Happy New Year!
New Year’s Day around our house consists of waking up late morning, getting ready to watch college football bowl games, and taking life at a slower pace for the day. We also prepare the traditional New Year’s Day meal— the one consisting of ham, black-eyed peas, cabbage, and cornbread. Does this sound familiar with your family?
According to popular folklore, if these foods are eaten on New Year’s Day, they guarantee good luck throughout the year. Each food group represents something. You probably already know, or it can be googled!
I express gratitude to our membership. We just celebrated 125 years of service and financial care for your family and families across our great state. Without you, we wouldn’t be here. Your membership is very important in keeping SPJST moving forward in 2023. You have made this fraternal organization what it is today. As a fraternal benefit society, we must all be involved in setting goals to attract new members. May the New Year bring you happiness, peace, and prosperity. Wishing you a joyous 2023!

Lodge 117, Robstown met for the final meeting of the year on Saturday, December 10, 2022, to wrap up some business before the year’s end.
While we had decided in September’s meeting the nonprofit organizations to whom we would be making donations and the amounts, our treasurer made a great decision and donated to them on the Coastal Bend Day of Giving on November 8, 2022. This is an online event held annually for many nonprofits in the area, and any donations up to a certain amount are doubled. This was great because our donation of $250 to Peewee’s Animal Adoption, Halo Flight, and The Good Samaritan Mission was actually doubled to $500 each!
Our lodge has also been providing birthday gift bags and other goodies all year long to Windsor Nursing Home and Rehab.

How to Secure Your Home Network Against Cyber Threats
Editor’s Note: Special thanks to our good friends at BFB Security for sharing this important information. “As the New Year approaches, we wish everyone at SPJST a happy holiday season,” BFB Security CEO/President Bruce F. Bading says. “As the cost of a data breach states, cloud is now the number 1 target, followed by on prem and small businesses. Last year alone, over 25,000 vulnerabilities were tracked by the National Vulnerability database leading to risk and threats to any company’s brand reputation.”
Computers, tablets, smartphones, TVs, thermostats, cameras, doorbells,
and coffee pots. What do all these things have in common? They are all devices that connect to your home network and the internet.
Modems and routers act as the gateway between your devices and the internet. Without proper security in place, you can leave the door open for attackers to access and take over your network.
Let’s review some steps you can take to keep your home network safe from potential cyber threats.
Secure Your Modem and Router
Use current hardware. Technology changes quickly, and if the manufacturer no longer supports your modem and router, a security vulnerability may emerge and not receive a fix. Whether you purchase your own modem and Continued on page 20.

router or lease them through your internet service provider (ISP), consider replacing them at least every five years to ensure your devices receive the support and security fixes you need to keep your home network safe.
Use a surge protector or uninterruptable power supply (UPS). Prevent potential damage to your modem and router from unexpected power surges, spikes, and lightning strikes by connecting them to a surge protector or UPS. Some models also include surge protection for phone, ethernet, and coaxial cables.
Disable remote management. Some routers have the capability for you to manage your home network over the internet. While this does add convenience, it also increases the risk that an attacker will compromise your network. Disable remote management by default, and if you absolutely need it, be sure to enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to use this feature.
Change your modem and router passwords from the default passwords to secure passwords. Changing default passwords will prevent others from accessing the configuration, changing settings, and gaining visibility into your network.
Enable automatic updates and install the latest firmware. Keeping your modem and router up to date with the latest firmware helps protect them as new vulnerabilities emerge and receive fixes. Enable the router’s firewall. The firewall helps prevent the devices on your network from accessing malicious sites as well as keeps outsiders on the outside of your network.
Enable website filtering. Some routers have website filtering and parental controls as added features to prevent users from accessing malicious or inappropriate websites while on your network. If your router does not have these features built in, you can set up free internet Domain Name System (DNS) filtering through services such as quad9, CleanBrowsing, or OpenDNS.
Reboot your modem and router at least once a month. Malicious software can infect your router without your knowledge. Periodically reboot your modem and router to clear potentially malicious software from memory, refresh your device connections, and keep your internet connection healthy and fast.
Secure Your Wi-Fi
Change the Wi-Fi network name (SSID). The default wireless network name is typically the brand of the router. As such, it can provide clues to outsiders as to what type of router you are using and what vulnerabilities exist. Make sure you do not use your name, home address, or other personal information in your new SSID name. For added protection, disable broadcast of the wireless network name.
Enable Wi-Fi encryption. Use Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA3) if supported by your device and choose a strong passphrase to connect devices to your network. When feasible, choose wired connections over wireless for enhanced security.
Enable a Wi-Fi guest network. A security best practice is to segregate network devices. Connect your computers, mobile devices, printers, and other trusted devices on your primary wireless network. Additionally, restricting devices such as smart TVs, personal digital assistants, and your refrigerator to the guest network.
Monitor Your Network
According to Deloitte’s 2022 Connectivity and Mobile Trends Survey, the average U.S. household has 22 connected devices. Do you know what devices are connecting to your network? Periodically review the devices that are connected to your network and block the ones that you don’t recognize.
We rely on our home internet connections more than ever before for work, school, communication, and entertainment. By following these steps, you can greatly improve the security of your home network and protect you and your family from potential cyber threats.

~ Lisa Ellsworth10 Health Resolutions Doctors Encourage You to Make Today
(StatePoint) The New Year represents a fresh start and is the perfect time to invest in your health. However, you may be unsure what resolutions will have the biggest impact. Doctors say that the easy, tangible actions you take are some of the most important.
“Many people kick off the start of each new year with big-picture health resolutions,” says Jack Resneck, Jr., M.D., president of the American Medical Association (AMA). “The good news is that small, positive health choices made right now can have longlasting effects.”
Want to get started today? Here are the 10 resolutions the AMA recommends top your list this year:
1. Exercise is essential for your physical and mental health, so get moving today. A good rule of thumb for adults is at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity.
2. Vaccination is the best protection against a number of serious illnesses. To protect yourself and your family, get up to date on your vaccines, including the annual flu shot and the COVID-19 vaccine for everyone 6 months and older. Your doctor can let you know if you’re due for a COVID booster. If you have questions, speak with your physician and review trusted resources, including getvaccineanswers.org.
3. Get screened. Estimates based on statistical models show that since April 2020, millions of screenings for breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer diagnoses may have been missed due to pandemic-related care disruptions. Check in with your physician. If you’re due for preventive care, tests, or screenings, make an appointment. These measures are designed to keep you healthy and help your doctor spot certain conditions before they become more serious.
4. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can increase your risk of heart attack or stroke, and it affects millions of Americans. Visit
ManageYourBP.org to understand what your blood pressure numbers mean and what you can do to get your blood pressure under control.
5. One in 3 American adults has prediabetes, a condition that can lead to type 2 diabetes if left unmanaged. However, there are steps you can take that can help delay or even prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Learn your risk by taking a simple 2-minute self-screening test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org. This resource also features helpful lifestyle tips that can help you reverse prediabetes.
6. Whenever possible, drink water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages and replace processed foods — especially those with added sodium and sugar — with nutritious, whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, herbs, and spices.
7. If consuming alcohol, drink only in moderation. The U.S. Dietary
P P P Presenting 2023 Officers P P P SPJST Lodge 142, Houston
Guidelines for Americans defines that as up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.
8. Speak with your doctor or health care professional about quitting tobacco and nicotine use. Declare your home and car smokefree to eliminate secondhand smoke exposure.
9. Follow your doctor’s instructions when taking prescription drugs – especially opioids. Always store and dispose of these medications safely to prevent misuse. Whenever prescribed antibiotics, take them exactly as directed. Not taking the full course can lead to antibiotic resistance, a serious public health problem, and will not make you feel better if you have a virus, such as a cold or flu.
10. Invest in your mental health by managing stress, getting sufficient sleep, exercising and seeking help from a mental health professional when you need it.
If you don’t have health insurance, the AMA encourages you to sign up for coverage at healthcare.gov, which has new, affordable options. The enrollment deadline for 2023 coverage is January 15, 2023. Find more health resources at ama-assn.org. For a healthy 2023 and beyond, invest in your wellness with these doctor-recommended New Year’s resolutions.

2. Donate. Most organizations need financial support to continue their operations and deliver on their missions. Having a family fundraiser can be a great way to support an organization or cause. Whether you run a lemonade stand, plan a virtual fundraiser, sell friendship bracelets, or do something else creative, activities like these help youth learn planning skills and the value of supporting organizations financially.
3. Purchase Power. Consider shopping at small local businesses. You can also find and support companies that give back – either with a percentage of proceeds or by working sustainably.

How to Deepen Children’s Civic Engagement
(StatePoint) Increasingly, parents of young children are placing a larger focus on civic engagement and giving back. Not sure where to get started or how to strengthen your involvement?
The following actions draw upon Points of Light’s Civic Circle, a framework that helps people understand the many facets of civic engagement and provides an opportunity to show children the variety of ways they can support causes they care about. Combine
these ideas to engage your whole family, strengthen your community, and amplify your efforts:
1. Volunteer. Hands-on action is always an amazing way to get involved. Whether you find time to volunteer at a local organization or use one of Points of Light’s DIY project guides, there are plenty of options for families of all ages and abilities. Consider projects that focus on issue areas that children can easily understand and get involved with, such as food insecurity, animal welfare and climate change.
4. Listen and Learn. A critical element of civic engagement is listening to and learning from the community you hope to serve. Before taking action, learn about what’s really needed. If you can’t talk to those directly impacted, ask a local nonprofit organization if they have suggestions or more information. You can also read books, listen to podcasts or watch documentaries about the causes you wish to support.
5. Use Your Voice. Helping kids find their voice is important because they can use it to harness their power in bringing awareness to important causes. Kids can share information by telling friends and family what they learned over a dinner, sharing a report at school, or providing information for others with an action item to take.
If you’re looking for tactical ideas, Points of Light’s website has family-

friendly toolkits for youth of all ages that incorporates some of these elements. Visit www.pointsoflight.org to find a project that’s right for you.
Let your initial efforts be just a starting point. Taking action and understanding the impact of your work can lead to a lifetime of civic engagement and service.

How to Prepare for Winter Storms
Winter arrives with fanfare as Christmas, Chanukah, and New Year’s Eve all take place within days of the first day of the season. Parties and shopping may distract people from the weather around them, but after resolutions are made and the decorations are packed away, it’s not long before it’s time to confront winter’s wrath.
Storms are commonplace in January and February in many parts of the world, and even March storms are not unheard of. Knowing how to prepare for storms can keep people safer and prevent home damage. If a storm is forecasted, follow these guidelines.

Expression of Sympathy
We, the members of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of ALLEN JOSEPH KOHLEFFEL.
Allen Joseph Kohleffel, “Big Al,” a lifelong resident of the Eagle Lake area passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2022, peacefully in his sleep.
He was born on January 16, 1961, and attended Rice Consolidated, graduating in May 1979. He continued farming with family while pursuing his rodeo dreams. Allen was a fourth generation farmer on Kaechele Ranch as well as family land. He took pride in every crop he planted. In true Allen Kohleffel fashion, he got his final crop out for the 2022 Harvest.

Big Al’s sons were the light of his life. He often referred to them as his greatest gifts. Allen loved to spend his time with them farming, roping, and riding around on the prairie. They spent every day together working on the farm side by side.
He was a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton.
Allen was preceded in death by his father Raymond Lee Kohleffel; mother Dorothy Mahalitc-Kohleffel; aunt Dorothy Kohleffel-Cassady; and uncle Dale Cassady.

Visitation was Thursday, August 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus. Funeral mass was Friday, August 26 at 10 a.m. at Parish of the Nativity Catholic Church in Eagle Lake with Fr. Robert Guerra officiating. He is resting eternally at Chesterville Cemetery in Chesterville.
Pallbearers were August Jochec, Mark Meyer, Greg Zwernemann, Buddy Mascheck, Johnny Philipp, Kurt Kelso, Pat Pavlu, and Bunge Halla. Honorary pallbearers were Frank Reznicek, Cliff Mock, Mark Daigle, Tommy Mahalitc, and Rusty Graves.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth ready for Christmas
Dear Vestnik Readers,
It’s Christmas time, almost. I still have not decided what I should get from Santa. The SPJST lodge Christmas party was fun. I got to leave early and go to my friend’s birthday party. The cake was good. My elf, Cookie, came. He is hiding in my room today. The past weekend, I got to open presents at my
Mawmaw and Pawpaw’s house. I got a basketball. On Christmas, my grandparents, uncle, and aunts are coming over.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth: it’s the best time of the year
Dear Vestnik Readers,
It is almost Christmas! I can’t wait to get presents. It will be the best time of the year. We had a wonderful time at Lodge 47, Seaton’s Christmas party. We first had our monthly meeting. Then, we did a skit followed by visits with Santa. We had a delicious meal of pork steak and potluck. It was a fun day. This Friday, it will be the last day of school till after winter break. I can’t wait. Thursday is polar express day, and we get to wear pajamas. Friday is our Christmas party, and it is a half day. Have a great and festive Christmas!

STATE DUCHESS VANESSA RIHA VISITS SPJST HOME OFFICE; RIDES IN TEMPLE CHRISTMAS PARADE
Ahoj, Readers!
On Monday, December 5, 2022, we headed to Temple and the SPJST Home Office to participate in the Christmas parade. I had so much fun riding in the Corvette! There were so many people to wave to that my arm got a little tired, but I was having so much fun I barely noticed. I also really loved that I got to see the Christmas tree at the Home Office with all the ornaments from years past. It is a really special tradition that I am glad we have! I hope everyone is having a wonderful Christmas season so far!
