Introducing . . . A New Plan For Children

SPJST is rolling out a new life insurance plan for children, called JT21. It’s a term policy until age 21, at which time they can convert it to a permanent policy. If your child is between the ages of 0 and 12 years, you can purchase $10,000 for $10 per month, or $25,000 for $15 per month. If your child is between 13 and 18 years of age, you can purchase $10,000 for $15 per month, or $25,000 for $20 per month. Once the young adult turns 21 years of age, they will have the option to automatically convert the $10,000 certificate to $20,000 or the $25,000 certificate to $50,000 with no medical, at their current age.

Once they convert, that price will be locked in for their entire life. They will not have to worry about price increases or lapsing (unless they stop paying premiums).

With this, the child will qualify for the SPJST Youth Program and all the benefits that come with it. Let’s see your 100 pennies (or dollar bills)!

March is the final month of the 2022-2023 SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive . . . and we need your help! We need your pennies (or dollars, of course) to fund this year’s scholarships that will soon be awarded to deserving high school seniors and college undergrads.

But, first, we have a fun project on page 6. The March Caring Challenge is to design and donate 100 pennies or a dollar bill. Gather 100 pennies. Get creative and arrange them into a design. Grab a dollar bill and fold it into a shape or design. Use your imagination and creativity. Most of all, have fun!

Photograph your design and submit online at spjst.org/gives. Share it on social media using #spjstgives.

Westphalia KCs hosts drive-thru plates-to-go shrimp and fish fry

Westphalia Knights of Columbus Council 13902 will sponsor a drive-thru shrimp and fish fry every Friday evening through March 31. Plates will be “to go only” starting at 3:30 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. (or until sold out). Plates will consist of fried shrimp, fried fish, beans, slaw, and french fries. Cost will be $12 per plate. Plates can be picked up in a drive-thru lane behind Westphalia Parish Hall, 3000 State Highway 320, Westphalia. Proceeds support the KCs charity goals for the year.

Under the supervision of the Controller, this full-time position applies accounting principles, practices, and procedures to prepare and analyze financial statements including balance sheet, income statement, and departmental budgets. Responsible for the preparation of journal entries, analysis of general ledger account balances and reconciliations, verifies accuracy and makes recommendations for correction. Ensures that assigned responsibilities accurately reflect SPJST’s position.

Education qualification requires a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Three to five years experience in similar position required.

It’s Not Just Life Insurance

When it comes to fraternal organizations, a person is buying a certificate of membership. Yes, they have a life insurance policy or an annuity, but that is what buys your membership. Because we are a member organization, certain benefits come with that designation. SPJST carries a lot of benefits that come with that membership. Children’s Death Benefit

The sadness of losing an infant or caring for an infant in poor health shouldn’t be compounded by financial distress. SPJST’s Newborn Benefit can help ease the financial burden if a newborn passes away between three and 180 days after birth. If one parent is an SPJST member, the family will receive $2,500, and if both parents are SPJST members, the family will receive $5,000 to help with medical or funeral expenses. SPJST must be notified within six months of the child’s passing for the benefit to take effect.

Scholarships

Any student (senior in high school to a sophomore in college) can apply for a scholarship. SPJST has awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships. Go to

Youth Groups

The children learn responsibility, leadership qualities, and life education. They can earn community service hours that are great for the college resume.

Youth Recognition

Every year, SPJST hosts a statewide Youth Showcase that recognizes children in many categories including creative arts, talent, science, and public speaking. Youth also earn opportunities to represent SPJST at different events throughout the state and ride on floats in parades.

Summer Camps

We offer summer camp opportunities for any youth in kindergarten to 12th grade. This helps build team spirit.

State Fraternal Director shares March adult, youth member engagement activities

It’s always nice when we can do something special for someone you know or a total stranger. Monday, March 13 is National Good Samaritan Day. It’s the idea of carrying out selfless acts in celebration of kindness. I revere the idea of actively seeking out ways to spread joy. The concept is everyone carries around an empty bucket of love, and in order to fill our own bucket, we must fill others. It’s a win-win; we feel good, they feel good – and around we go! What is so special about Tuesday, March 28? Well, if you are a cat lover, it’s “Respect Your Cat Day!” It’s the day to celebrate you and your feline bestie! I want to share a story about our cat, Mr. Kitty. Unfor tunately, one night about four months ago, he was run over. He came crying to the door. I took him to our veterinarian to see if there were any internal injuries and what we could do to help him. Our vet told us he suffered a broken pelvis and that in time, it would heal on its own. We were very happy to hear that news. We nursed him to good health at home. He scooted himself around from place to place in our living room for two weeks. After two and a half weeks, he was walking again. As each day that passed, he got better and better. Mr. Kitty is now climbing trees, fences, and still very independent — until he wants to be fed or be loved. Cats are independent, very resilient, and can easily adapt to change. I now understand the saying,

“Cats have nine lives!”

Cats are not much different than humans. Many of us are independent, resilient, exuberant, and very passionate of our beliefs. One thing that is difficult for many of us though — is change. I challenge you — how adaptive will you be to change? There are a number of changes I am sharing with you in this letter, and we will soon be setting up workshops for lodge officers in the districts to review the changes.

I leave you with this quote by baseball great Nolan Ryan: “Enjoying success requires the ability to adapt. Only by being open to change will you have a true opportunity to get the most from your talent.”

Incentives for Districts, Lodges, Youth Groups

We have an exciting district and lodge incentive program for 2023. Districts, lodges, and youth groups will have several ways to earn funds for their activities

and projects. Keep a list of all of the lodge or youth club/group donations, meetings, activities, projects, and volunteer hours until we fully launch the webpage where we will ask you to input the information. We will be asking for lodges to enter these hours on a quarterly basis. We will also host several online discussions and trainings on what can be collected and what will not count. Watch for more details to be coming soon.

The Fraternal and Insurance Departments are happy to be working hand-inhand on lodges earning money through “The Survivor Game” and the SPJST Membership Drive for 2023. A big congratulations to Lodges 79, Corpus Christi; 88, Houston; 92, Fort Worth; and 160, San Angelo who each received $100 awards for adding new members into their lodges! Souper Bowl — Statewide Community Service Project

Thanks to all lodges, youth clubs, and members that are collecting soup for the Souper Bowl. These collections benefit your local community.

• SPJST lodges, youth clubs, and members are invited to collect and donate soup to a food bank near you. Contact your local food bank for specific needs.

• Photograph your soup donations. Submit your photos along with the total items donated to spjst.org/gives and share on social media using #spjstgives.

• Start planning for the next quarter (April through June). The next statewide community service project will be Paws for a Cause. Lodges, youth clubs, and members will be asked to collect and donate supplies for local animal shelters. Be thinking of your community or city animal shelter or rescue that you would like to support. Then, reach out to them for their specific needs.

2023 Youth Theme

In September, youth were asked to submit a theme for the 2023 youth year. We had many youth participate by submitting their ideas. SPJST youth then voted on their favorite theme from among four submissions that were listed in the December Vestnik Project. After all the votes were tallied, the winning theme was “Painting the World a Better Place” by Kyren Plachy of Lodge 17, New Tabor. Thanks, Kyren, for the theme idea, and thanks to Graphic Design/Communication Specialist Brooke Hoelscher for creating the design that defines Kyren’s theme and will be the center of much of our youth programming in 2023.

District Youth Counselors’ Workshop

The District Youth Counselors’ (DYC) workshop held on Sunday, February 5 at the Home Office was attended by all DYCs and several members of the Executive Committee. We covered a lot of material between 10:32 a.m. when the workshop began and 2:20 p.m. - the time it ended. Thank you, DYCs, for traveling to Temple on a Sunday morning to review the 2023 youth program.

Youth Leaders: I am working with the DYCs to set up a time for several workshops around the state. This will be similar to the meetings that we hosted last year—except this year, we will be presenting updates to the Youth Program. Scheduled workshops are:

SPJST State Camp

Summer camp registration is now open for SPJST members at this link: https://spjst.org/camp. The one state camp session is Wednesday, June 21 to Sunday, June 25 at Camp Kubena in Ledbetter, Texas.

• Youth enrolled in 1st through 12th grade as of the 2023-2024 school year may attend.

• Fee is $335 (includes $25 non-refundable registration fee).

• SPJST youth members can earn up to $210 in camp credits for attending 7 meetings between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023. Youth leader (lodge secretary for adult meetings) provides sign-in sheet for verification of attendance to apply towards the camp registration.

• SPJST youth who have a current life certificate that are unable to attend youth club/adult lodge meetings/activities can earn credits by earning service hours for community projects on behalf of SPJST. Please contact me for more details. Projects completed through May 31, 2023 will count.

• The $25 non-refundable registration fee is due at the time of registration. Please select the $25 online/$310 offline payment option. This will defer the remaining balance until the Home Office can update the meeting credits, if applicable. Payment can then be made through login.

• All fees must be paid by June 1. Fees (except $25) are refundable until June 6.

• Registration ends on May 1 or when all available slots are filled. Registration is first come, first served. A waiting list will be created, if necessary. Please notify us by June 6 if unable to attend for a full refund (except non-refundable fee).

• Camp registration will open to nonSPJST members on March 15, pending availability.

• Fee for non-members is $450 (includes $50 non-refundable registration fee).

• All fees must be paid by June 1. Fees (except $50) are refundable until June 6.

State Youth Showcase

Registration for State Youth Showcase will open at 7 a.m. on Saturday, April 1 and end at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, June 30. More information will be pre-

The registration process will be on the webpage and will be the same process as last year. There are 12 creative arts categories, and youth can submit one entry for each category. The Wednesday, February 1, 2023, SPJST Lodge 9, Snook meeting was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 7 p.m. Loree Lewis led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll of officers was called. Minutes from the January meeting were approved. Hall manager, communications, treasurer, and statewide reports were given.

The youth club made valentine cards and collected for the Souper Bowl caring project. They are planning a club/district outing.

Motion was passed to sponsor softball. We are in the process of getting quotes to redo some of the floor of the hall.

February birthdays include James Schoeneman (5th) and Loree Lewis (16th).

Lodge 24, Cyclone announces Super Bowl fundraiser winners

Lodge 24, Cyclone met at Flag Hall on Monday, February 13, 2023, amid fields primed for planting. President Brenda Maddux called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance, a silent prayer for our deceased members, and a Valentine’s Day greeting.

Secretary Cathy Bruggman read the minutes from the January meeting. Treasurer Linda Wilde presented her re-

port with a mention of insurance. Brenda then gave the bar and hall reports. Cathy also presented the fraternal report and reported on the 42 domino tournament coming up at the Home Office, membership drive for new members, and summer camp registration is now open at Camp Kubena.

Sadly, we lost Doris Klinkovsky, super salesman Charlie Waits, and JT Stepan, Sr.

Winners of the Super Bowl fundraiser were Rose Vrazel, Steve and Cathy Bruggman, K of C Assembly 3488, and Mike Boley.

Lodge 25, Ennis welcomes new member Cooper James Clayton. Cooper was born on July 26, 2022. He is the son of Kyle and Kaylin Clayton of Waxahachie. His sales agent is Margaret Krajca.

The Vrazels’ Tribute Dance is set for Sunday, July 30 – the only Sunday all of the musicians were off. We discussed more dances.

Daniel Wilde discussed the floor and roof, and he is getting two bids. We are also taking bids for a unisex bathroom.

Lodge 25, Ennis plans May 27 polka festival event

Dear Readers, Lodge 25, Ennis met Thursday, February 9, 2023. In celebration of Mardi Gras, the meal consisted of gumbo and garlic bread, and for dessert, Betty made chocolate delight dessert. It was so yummy! Thank you, Betty!

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Arlene since JoAnn was out of pocket due to back surgery. Pledge of Allegiance was led by Margaret. On the sick list were JoAnn Jones and George Hornik. Get well soon! All reports were given and accepted.

Rita announced the upcoming District Three Annual Meeting to be held Sunday, April 23 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. She also reminded everyone about the ongoing Souper Bowl campaign and mentioned that local lodge scholarship applications are due May 1. If anyone needs criteria information and an application, please give her a call at 469-3372284.

Arlene reminded everyone that National Polka Festival plans are underway, and our doors will be open on Saturday, May 27. If anyone is able to work, please let Arlene know. More details to come.

Margaret welcomed new members Cathy and Keith Lepthien. We are so happy to have them join our lodge! They also have been doing a great job cleaning the hall. Thank you so much for all your hard work, and we look forward to seeing y’all at our socials and meetings.

My mother, Viola Doskocil, has kept newspaper articles, etc. for 70-plus years. Many are family and neighbor’s wedding pictures, graduation, and other newsworthy events.

One such article is “The Flag Hall Times” with 1995 news and events. That’s the year she received her 50-year SPJST membership pin.

Does anyone know why Flag Hall is named that? The answer is in this newsletter: The hall became more popularly known as “Flag Hall” because of the flags that were periodically raised to make area residents aware of various community happenings and meetings.

I thought others might be interested in this vintage news.

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje elects 2023 officers

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje met on Sunday, January 15, 2023, at 1 p.m. at the SPJST Hall in Hillje. The meeting was called to order by President Cathy Garcia. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a prayer and moment of silence was observed.

Officers present were President Cathy Garcia, Treasurer/FAC Felix T. Garcia, Assistance Youth Leader Felicia Garcia, and Vice President Kate Manrriquez. Officer absent was Secretary Cynthia Garcia due to a medical reason. Members presents were Vlasta Bartos, Ardis Bacak, Georgia Henderson, Mary Ann Cerny, Jo Daynette Watson, Linda Henderson, Jennifer Rubesh (Higgins), Patsy Reck, Bennie Reck, Taylor Manrriquez, Mario (Mo) Manrriquez, Trianna Manzano, Carol Garcia, Sky Garcia, and Alicia Gutierrez. Guests were District Six Director Annie Vahalik, Philip Vahalik, SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek, Joseph Higgins, and Joshua Higgins.

Minutes from the August 14, 2022, meeting were read and accepted.

The treasurer’s report was presented. A motion was made by Trianna, seconded by Taylor, to accept the report. Motion passed. Cathy read the debt that is still owed to members and vendors. But, we will wait to get those paid until the next allocation is received. Cathy received an email that the lodge was in compliance and will receive allocation funds from the Home Office but not sure of the amount.

Correspondence received was the bank statements, direct energy bills, and letters from the Home Office on membership reports, Christmas card from Louise ISD, and a thank you letter from Ronald McDonald House.

No cemetery report was given, per Vlasta, as the next meeting is January 29 in Hallettsville.

Cathy reported the youth have been meeting monthly and assisted SVDP.

Cathy then reported abandonment roads were completed. The survey will need to be completed. She received guidelines on the sale of the building process by email from the Home Office. She will review the information, and the lodge will need to move forward in that process. Brian will email the policy of the building insurance that the Home Office is paying for. Cathy and Felix

only mowed the back of the building for safety purposes. Cathy asked if there was anyone that wanted to donate a mow. Taylor Manrriquez, who just turned 18, volunteered to donate a mow.

Cathy asked Brian if anything was found on the last audit of the bingo business in the boxes located at the Home Office. Brian stated that the boxes were located. Linda volunteered to go to Temple and look through the boxes for the last audit at her available time.

New Business

Kooper Walker Vasquez was accepted as a new member upon a motion by Felix, seconded by Georgia. The motion passed.

Elections

Nomination Chair Cynthia Garcia submitted a slate of officers: Cathy Garcia - President/Youth Leader, Kate Manrriquez - Vice President, Felix Garcia - Treasurer/FAC, Carol Garcia - Secretary, and Felicia Garcia - Assistant Youth Leader. Before ballots were

handed out, Cathy asked Brian if the position of fraternal activities coordinator (FAC) can be combined. He stated yes. Therefore, FAC will be part of the duties of the vice president. Cathy asked if the assistant youth leader’s position needed to be elected, and Brian stated no. So no election would be held for assistant youth leader; it will be noted by the elected youth leader to name as assistant. Election ballots were handed out.

From the floor, Vlasta nominated Linda for president. Nominations then ceased, and members then casted a paper ballot vote for Cathy or Linda for president. Ballots were counted by Brian and Annie. Results were announced as Cathy with 9 votes and Linda with 8 votes. Cathy was elected as president for 2023.

Election for vice president/FAC was called with no other nominations from the floor. Kate Manrriquez was elected by acclamation, after a motion by Trianna, seconded by Taylor. The motion passed.

Election for treasurer was called with no other nominations from the floor. Felix was elected by acclamation after a motion by Mario, seconded by Trianna. The motion passed.

Annie asked that a picture of the newly elected officers be taken after the meeting concludes. Annie will submit it to the Vestnik for the lodge. Cathy announced that Felicia will be the assistant youth leader.

Brian announced that Territory Manager Kerry Harrington will be attending the lodge meeting at least once a year to report to the lodge with an insurance update. We still have insurance agents in our area. Cathy is hopeful that we will have a booth at the Wharton County Fair this year. We are not sure about Prairie Day but will update the lodge.

Guest Reports

District Six Director Annie Vahalik reported that the District Six Annual Meeting is not scheduled yet. Scholarship applications for graduating seniors are due January 31, 2023. She thanked all who participated in the El Campo Christmas Parade. She announced that Mary Ann Cerny won fourth place in the State 42 Domino Tournament held at the Home Office in Temple. Other tournaments will be announced in the Vestnik. Annie will be traveling to Temple for the Executive Committee meeting. She also mentioned that two projects were announced in the Vestnik: Valentine project and canned soup drive. Kate asked about camp. Annie stated that registration will open in February, and there will be one camp opportunity for the youth. In addition, no District YADs will be held in 2023—only State Youth Showcase. She said to look in the Vestnik for additional information. Brian said that we will know how we did in 2022 in about two months, and the information will be posted in the Vestnik. He also discussed the sale of other lodge halls with the membership.

Cathy announced that the FAC report has been submitted online, and she will submit the 990 form online. She will also send the minutes and election results to the Vestnik, will update the calendar in the Vestnik, and will confirm with Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny if the January 15,

2023, meeting will be counted for the 2022 year or the 2023 year.

Cathy announced that the lodge meets quarterly. Usually it has been in March, June, September, and December—usually on the third Sunday of the month at 1 p.m. But with discussion with the prior officers, it was suggested to move the meeting to 12 p.m. instead of 1 p.m. Cathy took a consensus of those present, and the consensus was that 12 p.m. was a better time.

Next Meeting—March 19

The next meeting will be Sunday,

March 19, at 12 p.m., tentatively. Cathy advised everyone to look at the Vestnik for any changes to the next meeting as this is the time frame for spring break and might not be a good meeting date. Other meetings will be posted as new officers discuss the sale of the building process, and they will be posted in the Vestnik.

At our February member meeting, we were able to bring back (yet another) tradition to Lodge 88, Houston. Membership then voted on our Fraternalist of the Year among those 11 candidates. It is really very fitting that the 2022 Fraternalist of the Year for Lodge 88 is Ashley Victorick. Ashley was one of the very first people that many of us met when we joined the Lodge. He was a bridge from the Lodge’s past to its future. Over his years at Lodge 88, he served in various roles such as board chairman, treasurer, bar manager, and many others. It’s an understatement to say that he was critical to the revitalization of Lodge 88 and the community that we all now enjoy.

Sadly, we lost Ashley last February, almost exactly a year from the day that his family accepted Fraternalist of the Year on his behalf. We would like to thank his family (father Donnie of Snook, sister Melissa of Pearland, and aunt Janice and uncle Wallace of Pearland) for joining us to accept the award on his behalf.

Ashley was an inspiration to giving his time and talent back to his fellow members and Lodge 88. We are happy to say that his legacy will carry on.

Lodge 47, Seaton to organize committee for annual picnic

The February 2023 meeting of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton was held on Sunday, the 5th at 2 p.m., beginning with the presentation of flags by youth club members Everhett Bartek and Andrew Ordogne. Lodge President Brandon Bartek led the Pledge of Allegiance. Previous lodge meeting minutes were read by Youth Leader Amber Bartek, which were approved as read. Lodge members were thanked for helping with replacing the rope lights surrounding the interior of the hall.

President Brandon informed members that the Backroads Band would be playing at the hall on Saturday, February 11 for the Valentine’s dance. He also communicated that the youth club would be selling hamburgers from the kitchen and needed volunteers to run the door to collect tickets. Brandon informed the lodge that repairs were completed to the men’s bathroom. The drain was fixed without any demolition, and pipe for the trough was replaced at a minimum cost.

Emily Ordogne gave the treasurer’s report. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rick Beck informed lodge members that there was a really good turnout for the state 42 and tarok tournaments. He proceeded to update members on registration for the state progressive straight domino tournament on March 4. Members can register in person or online for $30. He also passed on information about the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund and that the Souper Bowl is still ongoing.

Amber conveyed to the lodge that there are three upcoming bookings for the lodge. Rick Beck made a motion to explore utilizing internet banking for lodge accounting, motion carried. Brandon communicated to lodge members that firewood is available to those who need it. He also conveyed that a committee is needed for the picnic in June. Amber will reach out for members willing to volunteer. Lastly, Brandon mentioned about the need to draw more people to the hall and gain new members. The lodge will attempt to facilitate a dance once a quarter to spread the SPJST word. February birthdays and anniversaries were recognized. Two youth club members retired the flags, and the meeting adjourned.

Lodge 48, Beyersville gives to SPJST Memorial Scholarship Fund

Members of Lodge 48, Beyersville met on Monday, February 13, 2023, at the hall. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. The secretary’s and financial reports were read and accepted.

The youth leader reported that valentines prepared by the youth had been delivered to the Home Office for distribution. A canned food drive is in progress through March 23, and the youth will be manning Shepherd’s Heart

Food Pantry on April 1.

The fraternal activities coordinator reported the upcoming state domino tournaments and the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive through March 31.

New business discussion was the District Two annual meeting that we will host on Sunday, August 6.

Motions were made and approved for Lodge 48 to donate $100 to the SPJST Memorial Scholarship Fund in loving memory of Albert Koslovsky and $100 to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

Lodge 48 welcomes new member Casin Finn and transfer member Jennifer Urbanek Miksch.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth hosts Valentine Dance

On Sunday, February 12, 2023, SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth hosted a Valentine Polka Dance with the Alpen Musikanten band. All had a great time!

All ages are welcome to play, and the tournament is open to 40 teams. The tournament is double elimination, unless otherwise announced prior to the start of the tournament.

Entry fee is $50 per team and includes lunch for participants. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place teams. Bags and boards will be provided. No outside bags are allowed. For more information, call 325-6560489.

Lodge 81, Needville gives to 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive

The February 2023 meeting of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville was held on Sunday, the 19th. At 12 noon, a prayer of thanks was given by President Vincent Newman, and everyone enjoyed a meal of gumbo and pizza picked up by Bradley Stavinoha and provided by the lodge. Desserts were provided by members. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the kitchen committee for getting everything ready for us.

President Newman called the business meeting to order at 1 p.m. The youth led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call except Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha and Special Funds Chair Marion Morales. Added to our sick list were Willie Mae Kuykendall, Dorothy Kuban, and Jeanette Newman.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her report, and it was approved as read. She then read the treasurer’s report, and it was also approved as read. Willie Mae also read the special funds report from Marion Morales, and it was approved as read, after a minor correction.

Since we didn’t have any old business, we moved straight to new business. Under new business, Vice President Jeanette Newman mentioned that our lodge always donates to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. A motion was made

and seconded to make a donation again this year.

Under other business, it was brought to our attention that people do not have enough parking space when there is an event at our lodge. We reminded members that they are welcome to park on the grassy area. It is solid enough to park on. It was suggested to have a sign made that informs people to park there. We also talked about the barbecue area, the covered seating area, and a future playground – just for everyone to start thinking about these areas.

Dear Readers, Members of Lodge 84, Dallas met on Sunday, February 19, 2023, for their monthly meeting. The meeting was brought to order by President Vicki Petr Sims at 2:50 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Charles Nemec with a moment of silence held for departed members, Brother Donald Petr and Brother Marvin Marek, the earthquake victims, the victims of the shooting in Michigan, and any others who may be needing special thoughts sent their way. Secretary Cherri Petr read the minutes from the last meeting which were approved by all present. Youth Leader Lynda Novak read her youth report. She welcomed the youth in attendance and thanked them for bringing donations of canned soup for the SPJST Souper Bowl canned soup drive for local food banks. She said there would soon be a new link online to be able to record service hours, that a training workshop will be held online for those wishing to learn more about the service hours, and that camp registration is online for those wanting to

attend. Sister Lynda then gave her reports on Fraternal Council and Czech Culture Society.

New business included the announcing of the total amount of ounces collected at today’s meeting. A total of 2,707.2 ounces of canned soup will be donated to The North Dallas Shared Food Ministries - Food Distribution Center. Thank you to Brother Charlie and Sister Kathy Nemec who generously volunteered to deliver it.

Funeral Home and Bereavement Center

Memorial services can be very different from and more informal than funerals. As such, it is vital to know about how to plan for and attend these services in a tasteful manner.

Memorial services are often open to the public or may have a larger attendance than a funeral. We at Young's Daughters have many families who come from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds, and it is important to ensure we have a welcoming space in which they can grieve and reflect comfortably. We are a variety of staff who train on the communities rites, cultures, and customs.

For this reason, many may decide to have a memorial service in an open space—such as outdoors. We have hosted in-home services and destination services.

Although memorials may be more informal than a funeral, they still present a somber or an enlightened atmosphere where individuals reflect on the deceased in a meaningful manner. As such, all guests—especially children—should be prepared to enter this environment with a respectful, open mindset. Funeral rites and customs are not always the same and should come with the understanding of how they wanted to be remembered or celebrated. Unlike a visitation that offers a “come and go” atmosphere or a designated time for a testimony/rosary, memorial services tend to follow a schedule, and guests should be prepared to arrive at least 15 to 20 minutes before it begins. Arriving early allows individuals to get comfortable, speak with others, and prepare to focus on the life of the departed. The parking lot is structured with signage around the building for where guests are to park according to their position in the service.

Speaking to Family Members

Family members are generally present at memorial services and typically seated at the front in the reserved areas. A minister or officiant offers guests a chance to share condolences, stories, or readings during the memorial service of during testimony time - which is at the visitation. Offering support in a brief and respectful manner is appropriate; however, if family hosts appear overwhelmed, it is important to provide them the space they need.

Showing Respect

To maintain politeness, guests should avoid bringing outside distractions— such as cell phones, live streaming from their seats, food and drinks—into the service. Those who wish to offer a warm gesture to the deceased and the family are encouraged to bring or buy flowers, sentiment cards, bereavement gift cards for the classes, bereavement meals, etc. Typically, our website is equipped with such tokens and delivered to the service or the families home after the services. There’s another one sitting so lonely by the curb another Treadmill deserted gone the way of broken promises with no one wanting it or using it another resolution cancelled good intentions gone awry

it was supposed to be the answer the way to exercise and health but after a while the routine grew old the excuses came and the treadmill fell into disuse it became a fixture a spare piece of furniture to hang clothes on

the treadmill cost a fortune but it looked so easy we would be revitalized and become heart strong and healthy but along the way little by little things slacked off then we got off and never got back on the treadmill became unwanted we closed the door and forgot it being back there in the closed-off room out of sight out of mind

treadmills are us running as fast as we can to keep up yet our promise unfilled we show people the shiny treadmill and feel better about ourselves yet we never get anywhere we just run in place.

Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station

Hosts annual christmas party

Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station held its annual Christmas party on Sunday, December 4, 2022, at the new C&J Barbeque location in Bryan. A moment of silence was held for the members who passed away in 2022 as well as Ashley Victorick of Lodge 88, Houston and Czech Heritage Museum Administrator Susan Chandler, who both attended as guests at last year’s Christmas party. A barbecue buffet was served, and desserts were provided by the members. SPJST Territory Manager Chris Liebum attended and spoke about new

agents and other exciting changes happening in the insurance department. The current officers were all re-elected for 2023. Regrettably, both President Henry Mayo and District One Director Donnie Victorick were absent due to separate funerals they were attending. Vice President James Polasek conducted the business meeting, and Geri Polasek did a great job decorating, organizing bingo games, and door prize drawings.

Christmas for Single Mother, 4 Children

Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point sponsored a family in need at Christmas. Members and the lodge purchased and donated various items to the single mom and four children. About 50 presents were wrapped and delivered to the family prior to Christmas. Thanks to the members and friends who assisted with this project. The family was grateful for the Christmas blessings.

In Memory of Larry Bertrand

Lawrence “Larry” Edward Bertrand, age 67, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2023, when he lost his oneyear fight with colorectal cancer in San Antonio, Texas.

Visitation was held at Franklin Funeral Home in Floresville on Friday, February 17 at 4 p.m.; rosary followed at 5:30 p.m. A private family interment will be held at a later date.

Larry was born May 12, 1955, to Lawrence and Catherine (Warnken) Bertrand in Beaumont. He was raised in Poth and graduated from Poth High School in 1973 where he played various sports and was in the band. After graduating high school, he attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos and graduated with an industrial arts degree in 1977. While in college, he had an internship at Fredricks Refrigeration. Upon graduation, he started at Chevron Uranium Mines. Then he moved along to the Warnken family business and started at Wilco Peanut Company following in his father’s footsteps in 1978 where he was employed until his passed. Larry started out small on the yard, and after his father’s passing, he moved up to the office.

Larry met the love of his life, Roxanne “Roxy” Bayer, on the back of a jet boat out on Calaveras Lake in the summer of 1982. After seven years of dating, they finally tied the knot in Poth at Blessed Sacrament Church on May 2, 1987.

He had a love for motorcycles, boats, and water skiing. Larry and Roxy loved to get out and go on vacations. They loved to cruise the ocean blue, go to Louisiana for Mardi Gras, and travel to many different places for the Texas Peanut Growers Association Conferences. They were members of the Cajun French Music Association (CFMA) where they participated in many gumbo cookoffs and numerous crawfish boils

and festivals.

Larry was a member of SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville, where he held the office of vice president for many years. Larry’s in-laws had a timeshare in Colorado and any time there was an opening, he was ready to go.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Catherine (Warnken) Bertrand; father-in-law Bob Bayer; and sister in-law April Bayer.

Larry is survived by his wife of 35 years, Roxanne “Roxy” Bertrand; mother-in-law Polly Bayer; brothers John and wife Lisa, Wayne and wife Treva, and Stephen and wife Irma; brother-in-law John Bayer and wife Peggy; sister-in-law Wendy Pruski; nieces and nephews Dustin Bertrand and wife Kaleigh, Justin Bertrand and wife Alyssa, Allie Bertrand, Spencer Bertrand, Franchesca Bertrand, Trevor Bertrand, Kevin Bayer, Josh Bayer and wife Donna, Zach Bayer, Hope Bayer, Lian Lynn and husband Robert, and Trevor DeBellotte; great-nieces and greatnephews River and Raine Bertrand, Breelyn and Emberlyn Bertrand, Atlas Bayer, Jack Bayer, and Colt and Tillie Lynn; very close friends Lance Reinhard, Richard and Janie Mutz, David and Judy Davenport, and “Mr. Larry” Kellenberger and the late Flo Kellenberger.

In Memory of Julius Dubcak

Julius James Dubcak of Round Rock, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at the age of 83. Visitation was at 10 a.m. Monday, February 20 at Beck Funeral Home in Pflugerville with services starting at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial was at 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 20 at Seaton Cemetery near Temple.

Julius was a first generation Czech, born on a cotton farm in East Bell County. He spoke fluent Czech at home and learned to speak English when he began first grade. He was very proud of his Czech heritage.

Julius graduated from Rogers High School in 1958. He went part-time to Temple Junior College while working at Temple National Bank. After TJC, he enrolled in what was then called Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville. He graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

Julius loved his Sam Houston State Bearcats.

After graduating, he went to work with the State Comptroller’s office in Bryan. He worked there for a couple years then was transferred to the Houston office. That’s where he met the love of his life, Jeannie Rockco. Julius was married to Jeannie on May 6, 1967, in Nelsonville. They were married 55 years.

After retirement, Julius and Jeannie did extensive traveling in the United States, Canada, and Europe. They also went on several cruises.

Julius retired from the State Comptroller’s office on July 31, 2000. He worked in Comptroller Bob Bullock’s administration, and at one time, he was one of “Bob Bullock’s Raiders.” He was proud of that title. Julius was in the enforcement headquarters when he retired.

He took an interest in music at an early age and began playing trumpet with the Music Masters of Seaton with Alice Sulak and her sister. He played with the Vrazels’ Polka Band from 1966 until 1970. Julius was so proud of his association with the Vrazels’ Polka Band. He and Jeannie took a couple trips to the Czech Republic with the band and went on their Italian cruise tour. Julius and Jeannie attended dances at several SPJST halls, and Julius would carry his trumpet and would play with the bands when invited. He also had enjoyed playing with Jerry Haisler and the Melody 5. When Julius and Jeannie lived in Houston, he played with several polka bands and even played on albums with Jimmy Brosh and Julius Tupa. His proudest album song though was when he played with the Vrazels’ on their recording of “If I Were a Bird Polka” where he played harmony on his trumpet.

While in Houston, he became an active member of Sokol. He served as vice president of Sokol West when we moved to Waco. He served on the board

of directors of ZCBJ / WFLA (Zapadni Cesko Bratrske Jednota / Western Fraternal Life Association). He served as the longest unopposed director from 1976 until 2007. His territory as director was Texas, Kansas, Colorado, Louisiana, and Alabama. He served as president of the local WFLA lodge for several years and as an officer at the state WFLA meetings.

Julius began selling insurance with RVOS in 1993, was elected as a board member on August 1, 2015, and retired January 24, 2023. His service area covered several Texas counties, and he attended most of the annual lodge meetings. He was a very proud Czech and made a lot of friends in RVOS. He loved speaking Czech and would when he found anyone who could converse with him.

Julius was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton; RVOS; WFLA (now called Better Life); Hermann Sons; KJT Society 132; Austin Czech Historical Association; and Travis/Williamson Counties Czech Heritage Society.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeannie; son Travis Edward Dubcak, Sr., of Baytown; grandsons Travis Edward Dubcak, Jr. of Austin and Horacio Dubcak of La Porte; great-grandson Nicholas Julius Dubcak of Austin; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins in Texas and Kansas.

Pallbearers were Joe Lyles, Richard Hykel, Mike Nipper, Larry McEntire, Brian Ray, Ray Dubcak, and Travis Dubcak Sr.

In Memory of Milton Peterson

Milton Nelson Peterson, age 81, of Malone, Texas, passed away late Sunday evening, February 19, 2023, at Town Hall Estates in Hillsboro.

A rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Sunday, February 26 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, February 27 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with Reverend Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Milton was born November 25, 1941, in West, the son of Harrison and Mennita (Lander) Peterson. He attended the old Leggott School, West Elementary, and was a 1959 graduate of West High School. On January 19, 1963, he was united in marriage to Irene Soukup in West.

Milton was an active hard-working, dedicated member of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood. He served as president from 2006 to 2022. He was also a delegate to several past state SPJST Conventions including in 2021.

He was also a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Hillsboro; Hill County Farm Bureau; KJT Society 109, Hillsboro; Malone Volunteer Fire Department; and Hill County Cell Block Museum. He was a USDA field enumerator for more than 20 years and a board member for the Brandon and Irene Water Supply District. In 2017, Milton received the Pioneer Award for District 4 of the Texas Farm Bureau. He worked for the General Motors Assembly Plant in Arlington for 30 years, before retiring in 1992. Milton enjoyed playing “42,” attending and participating in tractor pulls, farming, having a cold Lone Star Beer, eating barbecue, going to auction sales, and tending to his cattle. He loved spending time with his family and was known by his nickname, “Let’s Go.”

Milton was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter Haley Lynn Peterson; and brothers-in-law Edward Soukup, Gary Hayes, George Soukup,

and George Berger.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Irene Peterson of Malone; children Kenneth Peterson, Kimberly Seith and husband Robert, Matthew Peterson and wife Naomi, and Marshall Peterson; sisters Nancy Hayes, Mary Mangrum and husband Boyd, and Mollie Hatton and husband Russell; sisters-in-law Ann Berger and Elleen Soukup; grandchildren Amelia Booth and husband Eli, John Peterson, Amber Perez and husband Joe, Ashley Pechacek and husband Adam, Courtney McGuire, Dakota Meadows and husband Thomas, Colton Peterson, Dylan Peterson and wife Ryann, and Paige Peterson; great-grandchildren Madison, Samuel, Cassandra, Abigail, Audrey, Kaden, Ella, Riley, Paeyton, Presley, Parker, Fenton, and one on the way; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Active pallbearers were Dylan Peterson, John Peterson, Colton Peterson, Jimmy Uptmore, Edward Nors, Brian Berger, Chris Hatton, and Dale Berger. Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters, the Kelm Brothers, members of Hill County Farm Bureau, and members of Malone Volunteer Fire Department.

In Memory of Georgie Soukup

Georgie Soukup, age 88, of Robinson, Texas, passed away early Saturday morning, January 21, 2023, at Ascension Providence Hospital in Waco.

A rosary was prayed at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 26 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, January 27 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West with Reverend John Boiko as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Georgie was born November 14,

1934, in Ross, the daughter of Alfons and Julia (Hykel) Hrabal. She attended the old Leggett School. On September 25, 1954, she was united in marriage to Alfons Soukup in Waco.

Georgie was a member of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood and St. Louis Catholic Church in Waco. She worked as a seamstress for JM Woods Manufacturing for 20 years and worked at various frame shops in Waco for 20 years. Georgie enjoyed canning vegetables, quilting, crocheting, and baking with her great-granddaughters, Alivia and Tori. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Georgie was preceded in death by her parents; son Richard Soukup Sr.; brothers Eugene Hrabal Sr. and Alfons “Poncho” Hrabal Jr.; and sister Angie Kocian.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 68 years, Alfons Soukup of Robinson; daughter Beverly Williams of Waco; grandsons Richard Soukup Jr. and wife Brittany, Jake Williams and wife Lindsey, and Tye Williams and wife Lera; great-grandchildren Alivia, Tori, Brynn, Grady, and Claire; brother Eddie Ray Hrabal and wife Veronica; sister Irene Barber; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In Memory of Joe Kocab

Joe Kocab passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2022. Joe was a member of the Czech Catholic Union/CCU Life for 85 years. In 1966, Joe became Vice President serving alongside Charles Hronek. In 1986, Joe was elected President serving until 1998 then continued to serve as Director/Past President until his death. Joe will be sadly missed by all that came in contact with him. SPJST will host one state camp session this summer beginning Wednesday, June 21 through Sunday, June 25, 2023, at Camp Kubena in Ledbetter, Texas. The session will be open to SPJST members and non-members, pending availability.

SPJST youth members who will be in first through 12th grade as of September 1, 2023, are eligible to attend. Activities will be age-specific for both teens/leaders-in-training and juniors, and programs will run parallel during the camp session.

Registration for members opens on February 15 and closes when filled or on May 1. Camper slots are first come, first served and a waiting list will be created, if necessary. The fee for youth members is $335. The fee for youth who have attended at least seven lodge/youth club meetings between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023, is $125, which includes a $25 non-refundable registration fee. Fees will be prorated for youth who have attended less than seven meetings.

Pending available slots, camp registration for non-members will open on March 15. The fee is $450, which includes a $50 non-refundable registration fee.

All fees must be paid by June 1. Fees (except non-refundable registration fees) are refundable until June 6.

Happy February! February is the month of love, happiness, and chocolate. February is also Black History Month.

On Tuesday, it will be Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is about love and chocolate. Tonight, we have our Valentine’s dance at Seaton Star Hall. The band that is playing there tonight is really good.

Going back to January though, my birthday was good and fun. One of my friends came over, and we had a sleepover. Then, a lot of my family came, and we ate good food. I had fun.

The other day, I went on a bluebonnet field trip to the Armstrong Browning Library then to the Fabled Bookshop and Café. I had fun, and I even bought a book. The best part was that I got to skip school. I guess reading pays off. Have a great month.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club reports on upcoming activities

Dear Readers,

The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas joined the mother lodge for their monthly meeting on Sunday, February 19, 2023. Together, we brought our contributions of soup for the SPJST Souper Bowl community service project. We also learned about making authentic Czech rosettes which we enjoyed for our svacina after the meeting.

Youth Leader Lynda Novak reminded us about continuing to complete our Vestnik projects (now called Caring Challenges); the upcoming State Youth Showcase on Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29 in Temple; and online camp registration. She also presented the third place youth merit point awards to Ryan and Megan Ruzicka.

It was a fun afternoon. Don’t forget to watch for details about Lodge 84 joining with KJT Society 111 and KJZT Society 108 on Sunday, March 19 at Sokol Dallas for a Sunday Fun Day Easter Party. It is sure to be a blast.

What the Czech Republic was able to accomplish during its term as President of the European Union in 2022

The Czech Republic held the presidency of the Council of the European Union from July through December 2022. Each EU Member State holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union for six months on a rotational basis. The task of the presidency is to determine the agenda and priorities of the Council of the EU, to preside over its meetings, to broker compromises among the states as well as to represent the Union at meetings with the other EU institutions and external partners. To ensure continuity, the member states form presidency trios that prepare a joint program. This is a summary of what the Czech Republic was able to accomplish. The text comes from Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala:

“It has been a busy six months for the Czech Republic at the helm of the European Union. Six challenging months marked by the Russian war in Ukraine, the energy crisis and inflation. Therefore, our motto “Europe as a Task” was fitting for the weight of responsibilities and obligations on the shoulders of the Czech Republic. I am all the more pleased to be able to declare, even with all modesty, that we have performed our European task perfectly.

We have taken a number of difficult decisions and worked steadily on our European policy, which is a constant part of our lives here at home in the Czech Republic. The Presidency of the Council has helped us to promote the interests of the Czech Republic.

Our aim was to seek compromises,

solutions acceptable to all parties. We have always strived to promote the interests of the Czech Republic and our citizens.

During our second term at the helm of the Council of the European Union, we have fulfilled the five main priorities set out in the summer. Let me now recall the most significant achievements with a major international and domestic impact.

We had to act quickly to ensure energy security in order to protect our citizens and their interests. We are all well aware that these are difficult times, and that only by working together will we improve this bleak situation.

The Czech Presidency has been firmly determined to tackle energy prices and to ensure the strategic autonomy of the Union. This is evidenced by a record eight meetings of energy ministers and a plethora of negotiated legislative measures.

We have significantly reduced the Union’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels, capped energy prices, established joint gas buying, ensured sufficient gas for the entire heating season and much more.

In terms of the refugee crisis and postwar reconstruction in Ukraine, we have not only confronted the aggressors, but also provided comprehensive support and assistance to Ukraine and, above all, we have been actively managing the impacts of migration across the European Union.

Important measures included the approval of three sanctions packages against Russia and Belarus, restrictions on visas to Russian citizens and the continued financial, military and legal aid for Ukraine.

Support for Ukraine and the unity of the European Union are, of course, crucial for the functioning of the Czech Republic. The unity of Member States and a strong response to Russia’s actions

guarantees the security of our citizens and protects our interests. Ukraine is fighting a war so that we do not have to, and our humanitarian and financial aid is helping prevent thousands more Ukrainians from fleeing the war to other countries, including the Czech Republic.

We have found compromises and negotiated and passed legislation in other areas as well – we have worked intensively on securing our cyberspace and strengthening the economy and democratic institutions.

We have also kept in touch with our neighbors. We have started accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia. Bosnia and Herzegovina has been granted candidate status and a few days ago Kosovo officially applied for EU membership.

Last but not least, we have successfully brought Croatia into the euro area and Schengen Area, making the already popular holiday destination even more accessible and attractive for Czechs.

Besides our success in the area of European policies, we have also managed to excellently organize three hundred events in the Czech Republic. These included 14 informal ministerial meetings, a visit of the College of Commissioners in Litomyšl and a with the leadership of the European Parliament. There were also dozens of conferences, cultural and accompanying events, held not only abroad and in Brussels, but also across the Czech Republic.

The Prague European Summit that was held in October is undoubtedly an organizational success of which we can all be justly proud. The Prague Castle hosted 43 leaders from across the European continent at the first ever meeting of the European Political Community. For the first time, countries like Armenia and Azerbaijan sat down to talk at the same table.

The Czech Republic has established valuable relationships during its sixmonth presidency, built a strong position in the EU and, above all, improved its reputation as a dependable partner and major political player.

Let me conclude by thanking once again all the members of the Government, diplomats and officials for their work in making the second Czech Presidency such a success. As much as two thousand people have contributed to this outcome and they all deserve to be commended for their professionalism and unwavering commitment throughout the Presidency.

I am convinced that we will capitalize on all these successes and experiences for the benefit of our country.”

Czech Heritage Society of Texas offers memorial scholarships

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will award two scholarships - the Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship to a 2023 graduating Texas high school senior and the Albert Blaha Memorial Scholarship to a 2023 graduating Texas high school senior or first-year college student. Proof of registration in a program of studies in a college, university, or vocational school is required of the selected applicant prior to receipt of financial award.

The applicant must submit a packet of information outlined on the CHS website (czechheritage-texas.org) that includes an essay about a family member who represents or contributed to Czech heritage.

Applicant packets must be submitted no later than February 28, 2023, for the Victor Peter Scholarship and April 3, 2023, for the Albert Blaha Scholarship.^

Brazos Valley CHS sets March 4 kolache baking class

Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society (BVCHS) is offering a kolache baking class on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish Activity Center, 600 East 26th Street in Bryan, Texas, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) has had the privilege of paying tribute to our Czech Veterans by publishing three volumes entitled Czechs in Uniform. The awesome Czech Veterans’ who served, or are currently serving our country, truly fit a submission by TCGS

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard, or reserve is

Albert J. Blaha Memorial Scholarship to be awarded; deadline is April 2

This $1,000 scholarship is granted by Milady “Bunny” Blaha, the eldest child of Albert Blaha, the founder of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas (CHS), to a graduating Texas high school senior or Texas college, university, or vocational/technical school first year student of Czech descent. Primary qualifications include past or current Czech culture- and heritage-related activities and involvement. Proof of registration in a program of studies at a college, university or vocational/technical school is required of the selectee prior to disbursement of the financial award which will be made to the school, not directly to the selectee.

The applicant must submit the following: (All personal documents are to be in Times New Roman font, 14-point, oneinch margins.)

1. An original 300-400-word essay describing what your Czech heritage means to you, how it has influenced you, your current and past Czech cultural and heritage involvement and why you think you should be selected for this scholarship.

2. A list briefly describing ways in which you have been involved with Czech culture and heritage in descending order of importance. Skip a line between each numbered item in the list. Attach evidence or attestation from a cognizant person for each. Possible ideas:

• Take Czech language or history lessons.

• Research family genealogy and create a family tree (at least 4 generations).

• Interview a senior (65+) person of Czech descent about his/her life or his/her ancestor’s life.

• Visit a cemetery with Czech graves and record information on several interesting Czech markers.

• Help clean up or mow a cemetery with Czech graves.

• Membership in CHS or other Czech organization and attend several meetings.

• Organize, volunteer, or participate in a Czech-related program, e.g., the CHS Queen Pageant, a Czech celebration, play, polka band, dance group.

• Make kolache or other traditional Czech food.

• Attend Hus Camp (as student or staff).

• School project on Czech culture, heritage, history or language.

• Visit Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC), Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, Czech painted churches of Texas, or other Czech-historic site.

• Attend a Czech festival.

Summer Schools of Slavonic Studies (SSSS) are study courses organized by several public universities in the Czech Republic. Courses are held annually during the summer months (July, August, and September). Their duration ranges from three to four weeks. The length of the course is determined by the organizing school.

The courses are primarily designed for foreign students, specialists (teachers, translators), and academics in the field of Czech studies and Slavonic studies, however, they are open to all those interested in the Czech language, literature, history, and culture over the age of 18. Applicants from within the Washington, DC, jurisdiction can apply to participate in SSSS in Prague (1 spot), Brno (1 spot), and Pilsen (1 spot).
