In Memory of Fred D. Merlick

Fred D. Merlick, 87, passed away on May 30, 2023.

Memorial service was at 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2023 in Mount Olivet Chapel.

Fred D. Merlick was born to Maxinne and Fred Merlick on June 21, 1935 — a born and raised “Fort Worthian.” Fred had various jobs throughout his life where he installed windows, sold ads for the Fort Worth Star Telegram, sold real estate, and finally landing in the aircraft business in General Mechanics then into Bell Helicopter where he stayed for 30 years.

Fred married Edna De Poyster on December 10, 1964. They had two children, Sharon and Forrest Merlick.

He loved his family very much. He was a member of Glenview Church in Haltom City. He loved his family, his church, and his Lord. He was also a member of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth.

Fred was truly a family man and loved to travel with them to many states and interesting cities. Even though he loved to travel, he was notorious for getting lost during vacations even with his gift of telling someone how to get somewhere. On a trip the family took to Red River, New Mexico, he went back to Texas up and through Oklahoma. One trip to Louisiana, he argued with the GPS the entire time and got the family lost in a town of only 400 people. Despite this, he always managed to find some truly amazing places to eat during the journeys.

When Malachi wanted to get a dog, they adopted one and let his grandson name him Ike. Fred swore up and down he would not sleep in the house, but Ike slept in the house that first night. Then he said that Ike couldn’t be up on the furniture and before you knew it, Fred even let him up on the bed and got him his own chair for the bedroom. He loved Ike very much.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Blake Alex Matherly; and daughter Sharon Merlick.

Fred is survived by wife Edna Merlick; son Forrest Merlick; grandson Malachi Karnstein; granddaughter Brooklyn Merlick Coleman; sister Dorris Mobley, and very sweet, mischievous dog Ike.
