Veterinary Student Taking Poultry Medicine To A New Degree

2014 SPJST State King Nikolas Faust of Lodge 9, Snook is only the third person in A&M history to simultaneously pursue a poultry science Ph.D. and a doctorate in veterinary medicine.

University School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

As both a Texas A&M Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and poultry science Ph.D. candidate, Nikolas Faust is on a mission to improve poultry health and welfare while also feeding the world.

Like most students who dream of becoming a veterinarian, Faust intended to start his DVM upon his undergraduate graduation. However, when his initial application to veterinary school was rejected, he decided to pursue a master’s degree in poultry science. His second application for vet school was a success, but his poultry science research was still underway.

Rather than abandon his master’s research, Faust worked with his faculty mentor in the poultry science department, leadership in the School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), and the Texas A&M Graduate and Professional School to expand his master’s research into a Ph.D. program.

Doing so has allowed Faust to work on his research during the first couple of summers between his DVM classes so that he can simultaneously complete both degrees.

While Faust’s simultaneous pursuit of degrees is rare, as he’s only the third person to pursue both a poultry science Ph.D. and a DVM at once, his academic success is driven by his desire to feed the world and is rooted in his passion for poultry science.

“I come from a family that loves to feed people, and poultry is the most consumed protein in the world,” he explained. “I feel that the impact I can make through poultry production medicine has the most applicability around the globe.”

State Fraternal Director shares August adults, youth activity updates

Connie’s Crops Update

Connie and I enjoyed the fresh vegetables while they lasted. Unfortunately, the Texas heat has taken its toll on this year’s garden – and it’s only July. We did share many of the vegetables with neighbors and co-workers. I guess now we can look forward to planting a fall garden.

We have two new additions to our family! Meet Bandit and LuLu, our two kittens. They are brother and sister, and they keep us en tertained when we are at home. Bandit is very independent and wants attention on his terms. LuLu is very loving and enjoys sleeping in our laps and receiv ing as much attention as possible.

Summer Camp Success

Summer camp for 2023 is now behind us, and what a wonderful time we enjoyed. A big thanks to our youth for attending; to our adult staff for all of their assistance; and to the donors and supporters. Summer Camp 2023 was a grand success – thanks to you all. See the pictures in the youth section of this Vestnik to view all of the fun and excitement.

The email will also include information on Saturday’s program.

2023 State Charity Project: Back to School Supply Drive

Our third quarter state charity project is Back to School Supply Drive and continues through September 30. Take photos of your lodge’s or youth club’s donation, and submit online at spjst.org/gives. Be sure to also share on social media using #spjstgives.

Monthly Caring Challenges

The August Monthly Caring Challenge ties into the quarterly project of donating school supplies.

There’s still time to participate in the July Monthly Caring Challenge of writing a letter to an SPJST member in the military or a veteran, thanking them for their service to our country. Mail your letter to SPJST Home Office, PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503-0100. Special shout-out to Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club for mailing their special cards. Celebrating Grandparents

A very special day is coming in September. Grandparents’ Day is Sunday, September 10. Where would you be without them? Grandparents are special. They give us unconditional love, they

make the best audience, and they are not afraid to be silly. I hope our lodges plan a special celebration for them. Be sure to announce it in the Vestnik so all members can attend. And, send a summary story and photos to the Vestnik, too.

It’s Your Life

Build Your Foundation

Around the 3 F’s

Every day it seems there is something to worry about. Your finances may seem to be a struggle. Bills continue to grow: electricity, health insurance, home and auto insurance. Everything appears to be

going up, but your paycheck stays the same. Your retirement account is on a roller coaster. Your social security doesn’t seem to keep up with the bills. Things are getting older and breaking down, and repairs are not getting any cheaper. No matter how uncertain things can get, three F’s can make your life better . . . Faith, Family, and Friends.

SPJST is offering an exclusive VIP, fully guided, three-day unforgettable trip as we celebrate together at the

Tyler, Texas

October 19-21, 2023

Thursday to Saturday

Sometimes, we take the importance of this for granted. If every decision in life is centered around one of these three F’s, you will find less stress, more happiness, comfort, and support in good times and bad.

Everything starts with faith. Without faith, hope diminishes faster, confidence wanes, and pessimism rules over optimism. With God first, you can always be sure peace is not far behind. Psalm 56:11 says, “In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me ?” With God on your side, man cannot harm you.”

The support of family from you provides comfort, raises self-esteem, and increases confidence. Knowing you have your family will bring comfort that you will never be alone. It also assures them that they are not alone.

Friends provide support in good and bad times. Your friendship can help others get through tough times. Friends

help build a strong foundation to keep us from losing our direction in life.

With every decision based on the three F’s, your life will become less stressful, more confident, supportive, and optimistic. When dealing with your life, understanding the three F’s will allow you to help comfort even strangers and find comfort yourself. It doesn’t matter where you are in life.

“To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.” —Thomas Aquinas

All youth and adults enjoyed a great time decorating the UTVs and sailboat, riding in the parade, and throwing candy along with SPJST items such as pens, pouches, mints, and keychains to the spectators at the parade. “The parade keeps getting bigger and better each year,” Lodge 160 President Sandra Jansa says. “The number of people watching it keeps growing, too! Nikolas Faust

Continued from Page 1.

Faust began his academic journey at Texas A&M University as an undergraduate student in the Department of Poultry Science after graduating from Snook High School.

“I knew I wanted to go to vet school in high school, but I also knew how selective the DVM program at Texas A&M is,” Faust recalled. “So when a recruiter from the poultry science department gave a presentation and said they have 100 percent job placement, I was sold on the department. I thought that if vet school didn’t work out, I’d have a good backup plan. Then after I was at Texas A&M for a year or two, I picked up animal science as a double major to strengthen my vet school application.”

After submitting his first application for the DVM program, he learned that his GPA needed to be improved and that his application could be more competitive by gaining more experience in his focus area.

“When I didn’t get into vet school the first time around, I thought a master’s degree in poultry science was the logical next step,” Faust said. “My goal, initially, was to strengthen my next application while also gaining a

solid career choice if my next vet school application received the same result.”

Faust chose to focus his graduate research on improving flock welfare by enhancing dietary satisfaction. The goal of his research is to investigate a method to increase the feeling of satisfaction that birds feel from their meals, thus improving their welfare and quality of life in a broiler, or chicken raised for meat, breeder production system, he explained.

“Just like people, birds like to eat foods beyond what they need nutritionally to survive and grow. Like many other domesticated species, if given the opportunity, poultry will overconsume to obesity,” Faust explained. “Also like people, when their food intake is restricted to combat obesity and its comorbidities, birds have a tendency to become stressed and agitated. This desire to consume combined with feeding programs required for broiler breeders to meet production goals has the potential to infringe on overall welfare.

“My research hones in on the idea that if we find a way to bolster satisfaction with the feed that keeps them healthy and productive, then we can improve their overall welfare and quality of life.”

After working with his faculty mentor to progress his research, Faust decided to apply to vet school again. He

didn’t expect to be accepted with his second application but was pleasantly surprised when he received an acceptance letter.

“When I got in earlier than expected, I was really excited,” Faust shared. “I knew I wanted to pursue my DVM, but

Lodge 180, Burleson: June Member Activities

I didn’t want to give up my research in poultry science. Thankfully, faculty from both schools came together to help develop a plan for me to convert my master’s degree into a Ph.D. so that I could finish my research and vet school simultaneously. Now I have a village of support across both entities. With my poultry science department faculty mentor, Dr. Rosemary Walzem, leading the charge as I continue my research, and the DVM professional programs office promoting my best interest in the DVM program, I know that success in both fields is only a matter of time.”

Some of the active members of Lodge 180, Burleson, Texas, gathered at Logan’s Steakhouse in Burleson for their monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. Pictured are, left to right, Robert Sill, Secretary Patricia Sill, Treasurer Rhonda Hurtik, Liana Scott, Sandy Alemonte, Dena Bowden, Dylan Bowden, Verna Mason, and Vice President Joseph Hurtik. After the meeting, members enjoyed a plentiful dinner. Birthday celebra-

tions for June were Liana Scott and Joseph Hurtik. Robert and Patricia’s special day was July 12, 2023. Rhonda, Patricia, and Joseph are members of Lodge 180, and Robert is a member of Lodge 183, Arlington.

Faust said his Ph.D. will support his veterinary aspirations upon completion of both degrees in 2025 because each degree program complements the other and will make him a better poultry veterinarian upon graduation. His DVM training will allow him to practice veterinary medicine on the flocks under his care, while his Ph.D. research will help him identify and investigate new potential improvements for flock welfare practices.

Faust also hopes to use what he’s learning in both degree programs to promote sustainability within the poultry industry by improving flock health and preserving production through ethical methods that also improve welfare,

health, and overall quality of life.

“My overall goal after graduating from vet school is to complete a poultry residency program,” Faust said. “After that, I hope to become board certified in general poultry medicine with a food animal focus. I want to work with companies in the poultry industry to help maintain commercial flocks and keep feeding the world.”

In Memory of Henry Micky Groce

Henry Micky Groce, age 67, of Caldwell, Texas, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at home surrounded by loved ones. Visitation was Monday, June 12 at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell. A private memorial service was scheduled for a later date.

Micky was born on January 6, 1956, to Thomas and Madeline Groce in Cameron. He was raised in Volney along with his twin brother Roger “Ricky” Groce, older sister Gail Weathers, and older brothers Dennis, Don, and Jimmie Groce. He graduated from Caldwell High School in Caldwell in 1975. It was there that he met the love of his life, Michelle. They were married on May 24, 1980, and just celebrated their 43rd anniversary together. He was her “Mick,” and she was his “Chick.” Their love and marriage produced two wonderful sons, Josh and Chad; daughter-in-love Amber; and three grandsons, Kade, Jax, and Xander.

After high school, Micky worked for Weaver and Lina Refrigeration before attending Capitol Barber College in Austin. He was in business 33 years as a barber on the Caldwell Square at Cozy Barbershop and looked forward to going to work every day. He always enjoyed visiting with his customers and loved learning where they were from and who they were related to. He may not have been able to tell you the county road numbers, but he sure knew who lived down each and every one of them. As his MS progressed and he was forced to retire, he found new ways to visit his friends in the community. We referred to these visits as “drive-bys,” and his route grew as his friends retired.

Before the MS took hold of his mobility, you would often find him on his days off outside on a tractor, mower, slinging an ax, or clearing brush with a machete. It’s what he loved to do most.

But what he loved most in life was his family. Whether that was spending Sunday afternoons in fellowship with his parents and siblings over a fried chicken supper that his Mama whipped up, or watching his sons and later, grandsons, play in the yard. If you really knew Micky, you know he had a love of all things Tabasco. Whether it be on a Chick-O-Stick, a Lay’s potato chip, or a peanut butter cookie. He also loved to travel, camp, and drive, drive, drive. He never seemed to get tired of it. Although, who could get tired of a 1972 Red Chevelle? He sure loved that car. When his love of cars carried over to Josh, he loved to drive to the race track to watch Josh race his Camaro. Watching him break it was less pleasant, but he still cherished the time spent. Really though, he cherished all time spent with his family. When Chad developed an interest in welding, many a night was spent hovered over a welding machine and pipe, watching Chad improve his craft. To this day, his boys are often approached by Micky’s past customers and reminded of his caring heart, genuine conversation, and great haircuts.

Micky was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook.

He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Groce; stepfather Bryan Bates; and other extended family members.

Micky is survived by wife Michelle; sons Josh (Amber) and Chad; grandsons Kade, Jax, and Xander; mother Madeline; brothers Roger “Ricky” (Kathy), Jimmie, Don (Sylvia), and Dennis (Mary Ann); sister Gail Weathers (Rick); and many other family and loved ones.

Please consider a donation in memory of Micky to further MS Research at https://mssociety.donordrive.com/campaign/Micky-Groce-Memorial. —SPJST—

Naomi was born December 17, 1929, in Smithville to Charles and Annie Hribek. Naomi worked for Smithville ISD and Calhoun County ISD for over 25 years as a school secretary. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar and loved to play bridge.

Share your heart and home: Host an international exchange student for 2023-2024

The SHARE! Student Exchange Program sponsors high school students from abroad for either one semester (5 months) or one academic year (10 months) of study in the United States. In the SHARE! Program, each student is matched with a suitable host family and attends the local high school in the district in which the family lives.

The students come to America from around the globe, including Brazil, Vietnam, Mongolia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Spain, and more! They are between the ages of 15 and 18 years and are carefully screened in their home countries to ensure that they are academically prepared as well as proficient in English.

Students arrive with medical insurance and ample pocket money to cover personal expenses. SHARE! students are prepared to make real contributions to their school, community, and host family.

Host families provide a bed and three meals a day, as well as a loving environment, friendship, and a desire to share
