Celebrating the Spirit of September
As the calendar flips to September, a trifecta of significant occasions graces our lives - Labor Day, Grandparents’ Day, and the much-anticipated start of football season in the Lone Star State. September brings values, traditions, and connections. As we honor the workforce, celebrate the bonds of generations, and cheer on our football heroes, let’s relish the rich blend of experiences that make this month truly special.
Labor Day: Honoring Dedication
Labor Day marks a moment to recognize the dedication and contributions of the American workforce. It’s a day to pause and appreciate the hard work, innovation, and resilience that drive our communities forward. Let’s take a moment to honor the laborers whose efforts have built the foundations of progress, and to express our gratitude for their unwavering commitment.
Grandparents’ Day: Generational Bonds
As we celebrate Grandparents’ Day, we weave a warm tapestry of generational bonds. The wisdom, stories, and love passed down from grandparents enrich the lives of their families. Grandparents’ Day is a reminder to cherish these precious connections, to learn from the ex-
periences of those who have come before us, and to carry forward their legacy in our own lives.
Football Season: Texas’ Unmistakable Passion
In the heart of Texas, football is more than a sport – it’s a cultural phenomenon! As Friday night lights illuminate fields across the state, the fervor and unity that football brings to communities is palpable. From high school rivalries to the electrifying cheers in college stadiums, football season is a time to don our team colors, rally behind our athletes, and celebrate the unique camaraderie that only this sport can ignite.

It’s Your Life
Life Happens in an Instant . . .
Will you be Prepared?
An 18-month-old child is inadvertently left in a car and tragically loses its life. A three-year-old gets struck by a car and passes away en route to the hospital. A six-year-old drowns at a serene lake. A 12-year-old faces an unfortunate shooting incident. Close friends aged 16 and 17 meet their end in a tragic car accident. A 21-year-old athlete experiences a sudden cardiac arrest and doesn't survive. A 35-year-old singer suffers a heart attack while performing on stage. A 45year-old actor succumbs to cancer. A prosperous 62-year-old businessperson takes their own life. A 74-year-old's mind succumbs to dementia, and their 75th birthday becomes a distant dream.
As harsh as these realities may seem, this is the world in which we live. Anything can happen at anytime to anyone. Life happens in an instant, and tragedy doesn’t care what age someone is when it strikes. It doesn’t care what race, age, gender, income class, or faith you are. It’s harsh and unforgiving. It will strike anywhere, and it doesn’t matter who is present. When tragedy strikes, no one is safe.
I recall vividly the loss of my twin sister’s 24-year-old son – an experience beyond comprehension. Why did this happen? How could it happen? He had so much life ahead. How will my sister ever overcome this? Can I aid her in her journey to healing? How can I endure this myself? With strong faith anchoring our family, we sought solace in knowing that God would guide us and provide understanding in time. Nevertheless, the pain seemed insurmountable.
As reality set in, things started to get real. My sister was unprepared. She lacked the funds for a funeral, and crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe were not available then. She was too embarrassed to ask for help. The
funeral home would work with her, but that was a debt she was not ready for. Even though I was in the life insurance business, I never talked to her about it because she was in a different state. I still should have helped her prepare. For that, I have to bear the burden.
Life does happen in an instant, and most people are not prepared. Being in the industry, I hear every excuse. “Life insurance is a bad investment,” they say. Of course, it is a bad investment! That’s because it’s not an investment; it’s insurance. You protect your house, your car, your business, even your pet in case something happens. Why not protect your family?
“I have life insurance at work,” some claim. That’s great if you plan on dying before you leave the job or retire. It doesn’t go with you when you leave the job. By then, it may be too expensive.
“I have a prepaid plan,” others insist. Perfect. What about the non-guaranteed expenses that are in the disclosure?
When my mother-in-law passed away, it cost an additional $16,000 to cover the non-guaranteed expenses from their pre-paid funeral. Non-guaranteed expenses are basically things that don’t exist today, but will exist tomorrow. If you bought a plan in 1970, PowerPoint didn’t exist. That slideshow will cost you today. With AI available now, there may soon be an option to have a hologram of you saying goodbye to your friends and family at your funeral. That will cost. Even with a pre-paid plan, a small policy can cover those new expenses.
“Children don’t need insurance.” Tell that to the parents who lost that 18month-old. Or the one who lost their two-year-old, or the 12-, 16-, or 17-yearold. Every day, tragedy strikes a child.
Because life happens in an instant, it is better to prepare now then to wait. If you have something, always review to make sure the policy is keeping up with
society. Buying a small policy to supplement your current one may be enough. If you don’t have anything, consider what could happen if you are part of an instant. If you know loved ones that don’t have anything, let them know the importance. It doesn’t matter where they live; they can always find something in their area. I wish I would have with my sister.
Addressing life’s stark realities isn’t easy. Having lived through, endured, and observed them daily, I’m pained by the sight of GoFundMe campaigns necessitated by a lack of readiness. The cost to be prepared today is much less than the cost of not being prepared tomorrow. Life happens in an instant . . . Will you be prepared?

Member Engagement news
from state fraternal director frank horak State Fraternal Director shares September updates
Never would have I imagined the long and hot summer we have had to endure this year. It looks like we will be in for another month of hot weather. Honestly, I am not sure how much more my yard can take. We need cooler temperatures and rain now!
Our SPJST youth need to go outside and sing our camp prayer “Johnny Appleseed!” Maybe we can drum up some rain across our state. This year at camp our youth sang this prayer before lunch on our first day of camp. That evening, everyone was scrambling to get to their cabins because of a big thunderstorm. I truly believe this might help break this heat and drought that we are in.
If you find yourself in San Antonio, I highly recommend visiting San Fernando Cathedral right off the western side of the River Walk. In the evening year-round from Tuesday through Sunday starting at 9 p.m., they have a unique video art projection on the front of San Fernando Cathedral called “San Antonio | The Saga.” The projection is very colorful and rich in San Antonio history. San Fernando Cathedral is also where you will find the tomb of three Texas heroes – David Crockett, James Bowie, and William Barret Travis.
2023 Incentive Reporting
A very important date has passed –May 15. Your SPJST lodge’s annual financial report was due in the Home Office on that day. Thank you to the lodges that have submitted their report. The form can be found at https://spjst.org/gives/ under the lodge incentives. Please look for an email from me in the coming days with more details about your lodge. It will include a listing of the lodges and what forms have been turned into the Home Office for 2023. If you have any questions, please contact me, and I will be happy to help you.
State Youth Showcase
clicking on https://spjst.org/gives/. Using the Youth Group Community Service Form, youth leaders will complete the text boxes, upload photos of the event sign-in form and photo(s) of your youth group at the meeting or gathering. This will be used to record the youth attendance for summer camp and scholarships. More details will be presented soon on this area. This will also benefit your adult lodge’s fraternal hours each year.
2023 State Charity Project: Back to School Supply Drive
Our third quarter state charity project is Back to School Supply Drive and continues through September 30. Lodges and youth clubs are asked to identify a local school to benefit students in need of supplies. Contact them to determine specific needs. Then collect and donate the items. Take photos of your lodge’s or youth club’s donation, and submit online at https://spjst.org/gives/. Be sure to also share on social media using #spjstgives.
Monthly Caring Challenges
online or with a check mailed to SPJST Home Office c/o SPJST Tours, PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503-0100.
The trip is non-refundable after September 1 unless you purchase your own travel insurance for this trip. SPJST offers travel insurance through a member benefit at this link https://spjst.org/programs/memberbenefits/#1563387428894-7f3919a008ff or you may use another travel insurance company of your choice.

Cars & Guitars—November 4
Cars & Guitars is Saturday, November 4 at Camp Kubena. Activities will include classic cars, music, food, arts/crafts vendors, kids’ activities, and family fun. Camp Kubena is located at 2001 Waldeck Road in Ledbetter. We are currently seeking vendors and sponsors for the event. Please contact Rob 979-249-5674 at Camp Kubena or Melanie melaniez@spjst.com for details.
The heat did not stop Connie and me from enjoying some family time with our children in San Antonio. We visited many sites, the Alamo, River Walk, great restaurants, and the Historic Market Square.
I extend my sincere gratitude to the youth who participated in the SPJST State Showcase on July 28 and 29 in Temple. Congratulations on your victory! Thank you to the DYCs, youth leaders, parents, lodge volunteers, Home Office personnel, and Executive Committee members who helped with entry check-in, at the water park, creative arts room, backstage, and royalty. You were a great help in making the day run so smoothly. We are currently planning for 2024 and will release more information as soon as possible.
Youth Club Attendance
Earlier in the year, I met with each district and their youth leaders. I communicated that the merit point system as we know it would end at the end of May. June and July were very busy months with camp and the showcase. Now that is behind us, you will not be using the quarterly report for meeting attendance.
Attendance will be collected by
The September Monthly Caring Challenge is performing an act of kindness. SPJST youth clubs, lodges, and members are invited to perform an act of kindness for a person of their choice. Think of little ways that you can help someone in need, or ways to say ‘thank you’ to someone you know or don’t know. Explain your act of kindness and your reason for choosing it. Take a photo and submit it under the 2023 Monthly Caring Challenges at https://spjst.org/gives/. Note that each act should take one hour, at minimum, of volunteer time.

State Charitable Raffle Information
Lodges that host fundraisers and raffles during the year, please take note of this important information. I urge you to read the Attorney General of Texas’ information that has been prepared about charitable raffles. This link (https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/ divisions/charitable-trusts/charitableraffles-and-casinopoker-nights) includes information about “Charitable Raffles and Casino/Poker Nights” from Office of the Attorney General. Below are excerpts from the website:
The Charitable Raffle Enabling Act (“CREA”) permits “qualified organizations” to hold up to four raffles per calendar year, with certain specified restrictions. The language of the law is very technical, and the two types of raffles have different rules and regulations. If your organization is considering holding a raffle, you should check the statutes to be sure that your raffle qualifies.
Recent Changes to the Laws
HB 2757, effective June 15, 2021, amended the Charitable Raffle Enabling Act to increase the allowable value of each purchased prize from $50,000 to $75,000 and the allowable number of raffles that may be held per calendar year from two to four.
VĚSTNÍK Monday, August 28, 2023 5
What is a raffle?
CREA defines a raffle as “the award of one or more prizes by chance at a single occasion among a single pool or group of persons who have paid or promised a thing of value for a ticket that represents a chance to win a prize.”
Who may conduct raffles?
Under CREA, only a qualified religious society that has been in existence in Texas for at least 10 years; a qualified volunteer fire department that operates firefighting equipment, provides firefighting services and that does not pay its members other than nominal compensation; a qualified volunteer emergency medical service that does not pay its members other than nominal compensation; or a qualified 501(c) tax-ex-
empt, nonprofit organization that has been in existence for at least three years may hold raffles in Texas. Individuals and for-profit businesses may not hold raffles.
For what may the money raised be used?
Under CREA, all proceeds from raffles must be used for the charitable purposes of the organization as defined by CREA 2002.002(1).
Can I advertise and sell tickets on the Internet?
CREA states that the organization may not promote or advertise a raffle statewide, other than on the organization’s website or through a publication or solicitation, including a newsletter,

social media, or email, provided only to previously identified supporters of the organization. Selling or offering to sell tickets statewide is prohibited. The term statewide has not been defined or interpreted in any known court proceeding or Attorney General Opinion, but it is generally thought that statewide would include the Internet.
What must be printed on the tickets?
Under CREA, the following five items must be on each ticket:
The name of the organization conducting the raffle.
The address of the organization or of a named officer of the organization.
The ticket price.
A general description of each prize
having a value of more than $10 to be awarded in the raffle.
The date on which the raffle prize or prizes will be awarded.
Can I give cash prizes?
Under CREA, cash prizes are strictly prohibited. “Money” is defined by CREA as “coins, paper currency, or a negotiable instrument that represents and is readily convertible to coins or paper currency.” See 2002.002(1-a). A certificate of deposit is a prohibited prize. A U.S. savings bond and a prepaid, or “stored value,” credit card is not prohibited.

Rediscovered Treasures: Vintage Friendship Quilts Unveiled by The Stitch Witches
Lodge 15, Buckholts Member
Cecilia Marak Unveils Century-Old Quilts found at Milam County Museum
Cecilia Marak, member of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts, is creating a buzz in the quilting community with her recent discovery of exquisite vintage quilts at the Milan County Museum in Cameron. Cecilia, along with her fellow quilters known as The Stitch Witches, stumbled upon these remarkable finds while engaging in their own quilting endeavors.
The uncovered gems, two intricately designed friendship quilts, are believed to have been crafted around 90 years ago. To Cecilia’s delight, some of the quilt blocks bear the artistic touch of her own grandmother, mother, and aunts. These quilts are a testament to the tradition of friendship quilts, a practice dating back to the early 1800s, where such creations were lovingly made for newlyweds and newcomers in tight-knit communities.
Based on the names embroidered on the quilts, historical estimates suggest
that these pieces might have originated in the early 1920s. The quilts proudly display surnames like Klecka, Hubnik, Dohnalik, Majek, Sipula, Plsek, Mraz, and many more, reflecting the rich tapestry of the local Czech community. Cecilia enthusiastically shared that the quilts also bear the names of other quilts linked to the Rockdale region, further highlighting the significance of these textile artifacts.
Captivated by the intricate details and heartfelt history encapsulated within the stitches, Cecilia expresses that the photographs she captured of the quilts do not fully convey their splendor. Notably, one of the quilt panels features the name “Mrs. Klecka,” paying homage to Cecilia’s grandmother, a native of Czechoslovakia. Another panel commemorates Frances Klecka, Cecilia’s mother, who was born in America in 1910, encapsulating a poignant interweaving of family heritage.
Cecilia Marak’s revelation is a testament to the enduring beauty and cultural significance of these textiles. As The Stitch Witches continue their own quilting journey, this newfound connection to the past adds another layer of depth to their craft. These quilts, each thread holding stories of generations past, serve as a vibrant reminder of the community’s shared history and the artistry that binds them together.

Vrazels' Tribute Band takes fans on a trip down memory lane
Sunday, July 30, 2023 ✦ Lodge 24, Cyclone - Flag Hall
Members of the Vrazels’ Tribute Band gathered at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone - Flag Hall for the Vrazels’ Tribute Band dance on Sunday, July 30, 2023, along with 600 fans to celebrate the band’s reunion. Vrazels’ Tribute BandJohn and Mark Dujka, Scott Hodde, Mike Marek, Jerry Haisler, and Mathew Strmiska - imitated the sound the Vrazels’ Polka Band entertained their audiences with for the 55 years it played.
All who attended were treated to a special introduction of past band members as well as a sing-along led by Alfred Vrazel. The crowd gathered around the stage to join in singing the band’s signature song, “If I Were a Bird,” which was dedicated to accordion player Anton Vrazel, who was unable to attend.
Former band members at the dance were Larry Olejnik, Bill Collins, Patrick Strmiska, Glenn Marek, Franklin Hruska, Albert Heselmeyer, and David Trojacek. Another memorable part of the day was when Glenn Marek played “You Win Again” on the piano and Alfred Vrazel on vocals - just as they did when the band recorded it 50 years ago. Alfred Vrazel also sang a beautiful version of the country song “Crying Time” in the Czech language, which many of us remember the band playing in the 1970s.
The Vrazel girls - my sister Rose Vrazel and I (daughters of Anton Vrazel), Debbie Vrazel and Karen Pratt (daughters of Albert Vrazel), Patricia Hoelscher (daughter of Lawrence Vrazel, Jr.) and Cindy Morris (daughter of Alfred Vrazel) - decorated the hall with pictures and posters of the band as well as all banners and table covers. Daniel Wilde had a 1929 Model A and John Deere B Tractor on display, both of which appeared on the covers of the band’s CDs. Cindy Morris had a quilt made by Cecilia Marak, which included pictures of all the band’s vinyl record album covers and was proudly on display. A big thank you to my sister, cousins, and my husband, Daniel, for all their help in decorating and seating guests.

We are very excited to announce that Maggie’s Fabric Patch from West, Texas, is joining us. After extensive research, we have determined that Maggie is the preeminent provider of traditional Czech costumes (kroj) in the state of Texas. You can reach out to her at maggiegrmela@yahoo.com or visit maggiesfabricpath.com if you want to preorder a kroj to have it by Czechfest . . . like the sweet one I just ordered.
Calling all vendors: If you own or work for a company that would be interested in having a booth in the Czechfest Market, please email entertainment.lodge88@gmail.org as Mary is organizing. We are asking for vendors to donate items to the silent auction in lieu of booth fees.
Food Distribution Improvements: First, thanks to the BBQ Committee for agreeing to cook for the event this year.
We will have sausage and pulled pork on the menu. Dorothy and the Kitchen Committee will still be cooking up the sides.
We are still going to offer a full meal inside, but we plan to also offer sausages and hot dogs outside as well. We know the line can get pretty long, and that should be pretty grab and go.
Rather than include the meal in everyone’s ticket price, we will just let people buy the meal separately. It should lower the price point for people just looking to Czech it out and keep things moving.
So get excited, mark your calendars, and email us at members@lodge88.org if you think you can help organize (otherwise be on the lookout for the chance to volunteer on the day of).
Many thanks, Aaron Rigamonti

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle shares August activities
The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth met on August 8, 2023, with 32 members, two visitors, and two men attending. It was such a hot day so it was wonderful to see everyone anxious to get together for a few hours of fellowship in a cool building. Thank you, SPJST Lodge 92, for allowing us to hold our meetings at your hall each month. We appreciate your generosity.
After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, President Cathy Simmank turned the meeting over to Lee Williams for our “thought for the day” and a game of “What’s in Your Purse.” She called out specific items, and the person who had the most items called won a cute manicure set.
Visitors were then introduced and welcomed. Madeline came again with her grandmother, Maria Nuncio, and Glenda Irby brought her neighbor, Sandy Kilgore. It is always a such a joy for us to have visitors. Too bad that school has started, and we’ll miss seeing Madeline until next summer.
It was reported that several members were still under the weather. We want them to know they are missed, and we send our thoughts and prayers to Delores York and Kathy Thome.
Meeting Highlights
September will bring a speaker from the Salvation Army, and we are looking forward to hearing about the work the Salvation Army does in their efforts to care for those who are need.
Project possibilities or special activities were talked about, but nothing was determined.
Today, members brought dog food for the “Don’t Forget to Feed Me” organization. Thanks to all who donated.
September’s theme will be “Back to School in the 50s.” No telling how everyone will come dressed or pictures they might bring!
Cake walk plans were made for the upcoming Czech Heritage Day on September 16.
Sandi Celusniak honored Janet Basham with a sweet tribute by reading a poem in her memory. It was entitled, “A Love Letter from Those Who Have Passed On.” Her service was held August 18 at First Methodist Church in
downtown Fort Worth. She was a lovely person who will be missed by many including the members of this organization.
As many of you may have noticed, Czech Heritage Day is coming up on September 16. Ads have been in the Vestnik listing all of the details. Jon Durham gave a review of everything that is being planned, and it sounds like an awesome day. Check it out!
Last of all came a wonderful lunch that had been prepared. Thank you to the hostesses who worked hard to keep everything replenished. Birthday ladies were serenaded, and there was a lot of visiting, laughter, and catching up with each other. Door prizes were awarded, and bingo was played.
Next Meeting—September 12

Lodge 107, Floresville shares August meeting recap
SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville convened for its monthly meeting on the afternoon of Sunday, August 13, 2023. The meeting took place at the lodge hall, commencing promptly at 3 p.m. The gathering was graced by the presence of a distinguished guest, none other than District Seven Director Regina House. With an air of authority and leadership, President Bielefeld confidently called the assembly to order, setting the tone for a productive session.
The commencement of the meeting was marked by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, a symbolic act that unified the members in their shared devotion to their nation. A moment of silence ensued, a solemn tribute paid to departed members, alongside a heartfelt acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by military personnel and veterans.
As the roll call of officers was conducted, it was heartening to observe the complete presence of all officers, underscoring the dedication of the team to the cause. The diligent Secretary Pruski, with precision, read aloud the minutes
from the previous meeting held in July. With a unanimous nod of approval, the minutes were accepted as an accurate representation of the past proceedings. The financial health of the lodge was subsequently unveiled by Treasurer Korus, who articulated the financial report for July. This meticulously prepared report was met with unanimous endorsement.
Director House took a moment to impart vital information to the members of Lodge 107. A forthcoming event, the September meeting/fun day hosted by Lodge 202, Jourdanton, was brought to the forefront of everyone’s minds. Her
wisdom extended to the provision of informative “cheat sheets,” designed to facilitate the often intricate process of filling out FAC paperwork, a requirement incumbent upon lodges. Furthermore, Director House drew attention to the ongoing charitable initiative dedicated to equipping students with essential back-to-school supplies throughout the month of September. Looking ahead, the charity drive for the months spanning October to December was revealed - an initiative to collect socks for the elderly, a gesture that resonates with empathy and care.

ful achievement, Youth Leader Lynn shared an account of the State Youth Showcase. Among the participants, Colt Pruski, the sole representative from Lodge 107, emerged triumphant, clinching the coveted first place accolade with his meticulously crafted Christmas ornament. As a testament to his talent and presence, Colt also secured the distinction of being named first runner-up Junior Mr. SPJST. A well-deserved round of applause and congratulatory sentiments enveloped the assembly, celebrating Colt’s remarkable achievements.
Reporting on the practical aspects of the lodge, Hall Manager Bertrand conveyed insightful observations. Rental activities were noted to be on a gradual decline, a seasonal phenomenon charac-
teristic of this time of the year. It was acknowledged that the lack of precipitation had impacted the landscape, leading to a delay in mowing the grass. The preservation of the lodge’s environment was emphasized through a commitment to water the trees over the forthcoming days, a conscientious effort to nurture and sustain these vital elements.
Transitioning to familiar territory, the old business was addressed with a brief reminder that the next meeting was scheduled for Sunday, September 10 in Jourdanton. An invitation was extended to all to convene around 11:30 a.m. for the collaborative setup of the community center, emblematic of the unity and camaraderie shared by Lodge 107.
As the agenda concluded, a sense of
closure pervaded the meeting as the floor was opened for new business. Yet, none arose, exemplifying the seamless administration of current affairs.
In a nod to the individuals celebrating their August birthdays, Lodge 107 took a moment to extend warm wishes. The list of honorees included Kevin Bayer, whose birthday fell on August 8, Erich Bielefeld Jr., commemorating his special day on August 16, Launa Turner, whose birthday graced August 20, followed by Colt Pruski on August 21, and finally, John Bayer, whose birthday rounded off the month on August 29.

Lodge 139, Danbury member, beloved librarian leaves for Germany
June 23, 2023 ● The Facts
By Cynthia Zelaya cynthia.zelaya@thefacts.com
Ace Filipp grew up in Danbury, and after a couple of career changes, it called him home. Now he is answering another calling and will move overseas.
Filipp’s desire to explore new horizons led him to pursue a teaching opportunity in Germany. He will be the elementary school librarian at the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin, where German and American students learn side by side, promoting cultural exchange and bilingualism.
ture in Germany.”
If a child went though Danbury ISD over the last almost two decades, they likely had Filipp as their librarian. He has gotten to serve children who, as grown-ups, now bring their kids to the same library. Some grew up to be writers, like Kristen Bird. Others want to follow in his footsteps.
“This year at the kindergarten graduation, they talked about their favorite classes. Several have mentioned the library,” Filipp said. “Over the years, I’ve had kids tell me ‘When I grow up, I want to be a librarian as well.’ ”
But Fillip didn’t know he wanted to be a librarian at a young age - or an older one.
“It’s interesting when you look back on life, how your life takes different turns and everything. I actually majored in museum history, with the intention of working in museums,” he said.
After graduating from Baylor in 2000 with a degree in museum studies and history, he wanted to sign up for the Peace Corps, but his options with the organization were limited.
“I wasn’t a teacher, I wasn’t a doctor, I didn’t have a background in a foreign language. I didn’t have the skills necessary to be able to do that,” Filipp said.
zoria County Red Cross. His background in creating interactive programs and love for storytelling allowed them to breathe life into history, humanizing the people and cultures portrayed in textbooks and museums. He developed a Makerspace area in the library and a school garden right outside.
He even made national headlines.
“In 2009, we nominated the official state amphibian of Texas,” Filipp said. “Texas has a lot of symbols. There’s the longhorn, which is the Texas state mammal. The monarch butterfly is the insect. The Texas state bird is the mockingbird, but there was no state amphibian.”
As a fourth-grade teacher, he realized the project would be an excellent way to unify the school and get every student and teacher involved in the democratic
black salamander population in danger. Had the black salamander made the cut only to be harmed soon after, it would have brought unwanted environmental attention on the aquifer’s dealings, Filipp said.
The children were dejected, but didn’t give up. When Danbury Elementary decided to give its state amphibian another shot, state Rep. Dennis Bonnen of Angleton stepped in to help. With the support of biologists, they narrowed the vote to five cold-blooded candidates. In 2009, a bill making the Texas Toad as the official state amphibian made it to Perry’s desk, and this time he signed it.
“It was a learning process, not just for the students, but for me as well,” Filipp said. “Together, we showed them the power of their voices.”
Ace Filipp, whose legacy in Danbury ISD includes a student-led effort to name an official state salamander, poses outside the Alamo. Filipp is leaving the district after 17 years as its librarian for an opportunity in Germany
Danbury will feel his loss as evidenced by about 200 people turning out June 11 to Skrabanek Park to wish him off to his next adventure. His impact from 17 years as a librarian in Danbury ISD will remain long after he steps on German soil.
“Ace has done more for our kids and community than we could ever repay, and we are truly blessed to have had him,” Danbury resident Heather Martin said. “He deserves nothing but the best and we hope he has an amazing adven-
He took a job at Brazoria County Historical Museum as a program coordinator and curator instead, and the amount of teaching involved in the job surprised him. When the time came for a career change, taking his knowledge and transitioning to teaching seemed natural.
“I got a job in Alvin teaching Texas history and science. Then, the librarian position in Danbury became open,” Filipp said. “A former teacher of mine was the librarian for many years, and the principal was my former math teacher. And she asked me to apply for the job, and if I’d consider going back for my master’s and be the librarian.”
He realized his exposure to different roles within the museum and the education system laid the foundation for a career as a librarian. Transitioning into this new role was natural, so he accepted the position.
Filipp spearheaded a multitude of projects and organizations during his tenure as district librarian. In his free time, he served as secretary of the Danbury Civics Club and president of Bra-
process. They immersed themselves in research, conducted schoolwide votes and eventually took their nomination of the Texas Black Salamander to the Texas Legislature in 2007.
Their choice taught them a lot about politics.
“The governor vetoed it at the last minute,” Filipp recalled. “He said it wasn’t very inclusive. We made the front page of the Wall Street Journal! Why would the governor veto this kids project?”
At the time, Governor Rick Perry wanted to raise the cap on the Edwards Aquifer, which would have put the
The community also showed its love for the school librarian.
“I appreciate everything that they’ve done for me, letting them be part of their kids’ life in school and being an active member in the community,” he said.
Whether he will ever feel the pull of calling Danbury home again, Filipp can’t say.
“I don’t know what the future holds. I could choose to stay in Europe, return to Texas or explore these opportunities,” he said. “For now, I’m focused on the present and the exciting journey ahead.”

In Memory of Helmer Dahl
Helmer Woodrow William Dahl of Hutto, Texas, was born April 19, 1924, and went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, August 6, 2023, blessed with 99 years on this earth.
He was the sixth child of seven born to Oscar and Hilda Dahl, emigrants from Sweden to the United States in the early 1900s. Both came as single adults and married a few years after arriving.
Helmer was baptized and confirmed at Hutto Lutheran Church. Helmer attended Monodale School and graduated from Hutto High School.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Corps and U.S. Army, and assisted in war crimes trials at the notorious Camp Dachau in Germany.
Returning, he met and courted Kathryn Elizabeth Weiss, while working in Austin and attending school in Chicago. They married May 8, 1948 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pflugerville.
They purchased a farm north of Hutto where they raised three children, David Dahl (Jacqueline), Christy Noren, and Karole Eno, who survive him.
As a lover of music, Helmer began his musical career at a young age with his God given gift, a harmonica, an accordion, and an organ. For 50 years, he entertained at weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, political events, and more. Upon retirement from his musical career, he began playing gospel music at home. His weekends were filled with music, traveling, and visiting all the beautiful places God made for us to enjoy as well as spending time with his family that he loved immensely.
He was a member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor.
Helmer was preceded in death by his parents and siblings and their spouses, Signe (Mac) McDowell, Viola (Chester) Deen, Ann (Don) McCullough, Martha
(Milton) Krenek, Mayme Speed, and Thure Dahl, and his loving wife of 68 years, Kathryn. His son-in-law, John W. Noren, also preceded him in death.

In Memory of Thomas Darilek
Thomas Joseph Darilek, 65, of Flatonia, Texas, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023.
Thomas, “Tom,” was born on January 12, 1958, in Houston to Rudolph and Celestine Darilek. He attended Lamar High School and played football and baseball, where he excelled on the football field starting as both a running back and linebacker. He worked at his dad’s JMH grocery stores when he was young and went on to build his own company, Third Planet Construction, in Houston, which he continued to drive to daily after moving to Flatonia.
Thomas met his wife, Debbie McBride, at the Schulenburg Festival in August 1979. They married in Schulenburg on November 10, 1984, and made their first home above the West U JMH#3 store. From there, they moved to a house in Meyerland, which they made their home and began to raise their
three children – Dylan Matthew, Ryland Elise, and Brenna Anne.
As their children started to grow, Debbie and Tom knew they wanted to return to the country. In 1996, the family bought 207 acres in between Flatonia and Moulton and moved into their house in 1999. This farm was special for Tom and his family. ‘Always An Adventure’ or ‘Triple A Farm,’ was the name Tom gave to their 207 acres, and it was his pride and joy. Tom loved farm life and worked hard to care for the animals and make it a home for his family.
Any time Tom was not working, you could find him enjoying coffee on the porch; making sausage in his sausage plant; tinkering with his antique finds; cooling off in his self-designed pool; attending an Astros game; or enjoying the company of family and friends. Those that visited him could see his vast array of collectables, which included vintage stereos; eight-tracks; classic cars; and a multitude of beer signs. He loved going to estate sales, bi-annual antique shows and beer sign shows. He also had a love for music, especially polkas and hardly missed a chance to dance to his favorites.
Tom was a loving husband, amazing dad, and a hard worker. He had an easy going, carefree attitude, finding the light and humor in every situation and being one-of-a-kind. Family was a priority to him, dropping his work on the farm to help out his children, attend celebrations, and enjoy making memories with family. He absolutely adored his granddaughter, Darcie Kansteiner. He enjoyed caring for and playing with her as well as taking a step back to watch her grow.
Tom had a saying he would tell anyone, from a stranger to his oldest friend . . . Be Somebody!
He was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston.
Pallbearers were his niece and nephews Jonathon Rohlfing, Brian Dunlavy, Dan Darilek, Matt Nowak, Phillip Nowak, Jennifer Darilek, Charlie Stevenson, Bart McBride, and Kaz McBride. Honorary pallbearers were special friends and family who meant so much to Thomas: Darcie Kansteiner, Kes McBride, Amy Hunter, Sheridan Fisher, Blake Parish, Michael Veselka, Andrew Gertner, William Blackmon, and Mary Hoffman Fisher.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Debbie McBride Darilek; son Dylan Darilek and Austin Weger; daughter Ryland Darilek-Jones and husband Nicholas;

In Memory of Rubie Loessin
Rubie Mae (Machu) Loessin was the eldest of nine children born to Albin E. and Vlasta Machu of Granger, Texas, on March 24, 1941.
Ruby passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
Rubie would develop her skills in childcare assisting with her younger siblings. Her first stint as a childcare provider began in her teens when she became housekeeper and babysitter to the church pastor and his wife. Inspired by her parents’ level of participation, Rubie dedicated the same commitment to service in the Czech Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge 20, Granger. Her roles included many years as president of the Christian Sisters, singing in the choir and 20 years as custodian—faithfully cleaning all facilities weekly.
While in high school, Rubie worked for Mikulencak’s Dry Goods store and, after graduating Granger High School in 1959, attended Durham’s Business College in Austin. During that period, she met Leslie Eugene Loessin of Circleville.
Les was soon indoctrinated into the Czech culture and institutions of the Machu clan, and the two married on April 22, 1961.
That same year, the Loessin Gin in Circleville observed 40 years of operation on the north bank of the San Gabriel River. A half-mile north of this family enterprise, the newlyweds purchased property that became their home for the next 60 years. Les relocated his parent’s home to sit beside his and Rubie’s, and along with his dad, proceeded to open a new television repair shop at the front gate. Soon after launching their new venture, Rubie began one of her own that lasted 40 years, providing child daycare in the home.
In this home full of other people’s children, Les and Rubie raised their two sons, Terry (1963) and Kelly (1973). It was a home full of laughter and love, with kinfolk enjoying coffee at her kitchen booth while Rubie supervised the kiddos and tended to her pressure cookers on the stove, all happening while polkas played on the radio.
Rubie loved old country stars, especially Porter and Dolly, who she met multiple times. The couple first took family to Nashville in 1968, and chartered bus tours she organized to the Grand Ol’ Opry and Dollywood became an annual tradition.
Her parents, and later Les’ mom, relocated to the house beside Les and Rubie’s where Rubie served as their caregiver. In this role, as she had done as mother, wife, and childcare provider, she was fully self-sacrificing and focused on the needs of others. She provided this care while privately waging her own courageous health battles not once but twice, defeating cancer in 1999 and 2011.
In their sunset years, Les and Rubie delighted in time spent with their grandchildren and being outdoors in their yard.
Rubie was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2013, but was able to continue in the home she loved, increasingly with the help of family. In December 2021, both she and Les transitioned to Winnie L Nursing Home in Cameron. The sons are eternally grateful to Rubie’s sisters as well as Amedisys Hospice Care and the Winnie L staff for providing outstanding care.
Rubie was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Eugene Machu.
She is survived by husband Leslie; son Terry of Circleville; son Kelly (wife
Stacey) of Georgetown; grandsons Trevor (wife Sam) of Brenham and Payton Ames of Georgetown; granddaughter Lauren (fiancé Will) of Hutto; brothers Albin F. Machu (wife Elaine) and Marvin Machu (wife Barbara); sister-in-law Rose Machu; and sisters Marie Ann (Henry) Ripple Jr., Angie Malicoat, Sharon (T.J.) Mikulec, Debbie (Larry) Haag, and Sandra (Clement) Strmiska.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 15 at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. Funeral service was Wednesday, August 16 at 10 a.m. at Taylor Brethren Church. Rubie was laid to rest at the Machu Family Cemetery in Granger. Following internment, a luncheon was held at the Taylor Brethren Church fellowship hall.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Machu Cemetery Association, 909 T.H. Johnson Drive, Taylor, Texas 76574. Or https:// machu-cemetery.org/ donations.html. —SPJST—

SPJST Painting the World a Better Place for 70 Years
By Hagan Sebesta Lodge 9, Snook District One Merit Scholarship
Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” In other words, art is cleansing to the soul. It has the power to heal, the power to make positive changes, and the power to help youth grow. I cannot think of a better way to make the world a better place than through the “art” of SPJST.
The SPJST Youth Program is a collaboration of both young and old who share a common goal of enriching the
lives of youth. Youth activities are held throughout the year at the community, district, and state levels. These activities include community service projects, summer camps, youth showcases, and social gatherings. During these activities, SPJST members work together as young aspiring artists, volunteering their time to give back to their community, their club, and outside organizations. Through community service projects, SPJST youth help paint the world to be a better place by providing opportunities to boys and girls to be conservationists, donate to charities, participate in lifelong lessons, and carry on traditions. One example is when the youth club members can participate in the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive during the month of March. During this drive, youth club members express their artistic style through creating a design with 100 pennies or a one-dollar bill. They

then submit their design electronically as a photo and turn in their one dollar or 100 pennies to the SPJST organization as a donation to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. Taking this approach to raising funds for scholarships helps youth visualize how creativity can be personally rewarding as seen in the world of art as well as a sense of giving back to others selflessly.
Recently, the community service projects took a new direction. Both the youth club members and adult lodge members are now able to join hands to make a difference in the world by working together towards meeting monthly challenges. Besides the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive, SPJST youth and adults can participate in challenges such as collecting school supplies for disadvantaged youth, collecting canned soups for a local food bank, and gathering pet food and supplies to donate to

local animal shelters. By participating in each of these challenges, SPJST lodge members are able to make a positive mark in the world.
Over the last 70 years, SPJST has provided youth an avenue to step through life with honesty and integrity. SPJST youth club members are given the opportunity to pass along their knowledge by mentoring someone in many circumstances. One example of this is through summer camp as an LIT or leader-in-training. Each year, SPJST youth club members from across the state have the chance to attend summer camp at Camp Kubena. Youth who are
in high school can attend training and be role models to younger campers during summer camp. As a leader at summer camp, LITs may assist with arts and crafts, games, the ropes course, archery, swimming, and any other activity planned during camp. Being an LIT allows youth to grow personally and recognize the humanity of other people, and respect their dignity.
There is overwhelming evidence that childhood programs make an enormous difference in the lives of youth. The initial sense of sacrifice, generosity, and contribution often turns into exhilaration and happiness. SPJST offers youth club
members the chance to shine and demonstrate their artistic talents at the youth showcase each year. Formerly called Youth Achievement Day, or YAD, the SPJST State Youth Showcase is now available to active youth club members as one large, two-day event at the state level during the month of July.
At the State Youth Showcase, SPJST youth club members display their artistic talents in categories such as handicraft, photography, holiday corner, hobby kits, individual or group talent, and royalty, just to name a few. Through each of these contests youth learn the meaning of hard work, diligence, and

Dear Vestnik Readers,
On Saturday July 29, 2023, I at tended SPJST State Youth Showcase. I entered several of my crafts and hung out with my fellow SPJST members. I placed third in hobby kits, second in photography, and second in holiday cor ner. I also received a $1,000 District Merit Scholarship. It was an amazing and bittersweet day since it was my last time competing at the State Youth Showcase!

dedication. They learn how to adapt and make important decisions when designing their crafts, writing speeches, or learning a part in a talent group. SPJST youth learn to work with adults and other youth from across the state and in turn, become ambassadors to the youth organization. By competing in the Youth Showcase, SPJST youth members help paint the way to a bright future as adults in society.
Social gatherings within SPJST youth clubs play a vital part to building a strong foundation in terms of character development in youth. Outside of the monthly challenges, community service activities, and the State Youth Showcase, youth clubs add a splash of color to the world by hosting social gatherings throughout the year. Whether it is Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Grandparents’ Day, Thanksgiving, or Christmas, youth club members relish in gathering together to celebrate the special occasion with family and friends. Most of these gatherings involve giving back to the community in some form or fashion. For example, some youth club members make valentine cards for the elderly, play bingo with grandparents on Grandparents’ Day, or sing Christmas carols at local nursing homes during the Christmas holidays.
A Chinese Proverb once stated, “A child’s life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark.” Being an active member of SPJST allows a person to make a lifelong impact by helping others, thus leaving a mark in the world. We all start life with a blank canvas, waiting for that first stroke of a brush. I would definitely say that over the last 70 years, SPJST has made this world a better, safer, and more colorful place to live.
