Embracing Czech Heritage Month
As the vibrant colors of autumn soon begin to paint the Texas landscape, there’s something extra special in the air this October. It’s the time of year when we come together to celebrate our rich Czech heritage, paying homage to our ancestors, their customs, and the enduring spirit they passed down through generations. This October, Texas proudly marks Czech Heritage Month, and we invite every member of our community to take part in the exciting activities and festivities planned for this month-long celebration.
In the pages of the September 25, October 9, and October 23 issues of Vestniks, you’ll find a treasure trove of Czech heritage fun activities that promise to delight and educate. These events are not just an opportunity to revel in our cultural roots, but also a chance to connect with fellow community members who share this proud heritage. Whether it’s enjoying traditional Czech cuisine, learning about our history, or dancing to the lively tunes of Czech music, these activities have something for everyone. The deadline for participation is November 3, so mark your calendars and make the most of this unique occasion to immerse yourself in Czech culture.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the lodges that have taken the initiative to host these events and actively uphold the mission of SPJST. Their dedication to preserving and promoting our Czech heritage is truly commendable. Through their tireless efforts, they are not only preserving our traditions, but also ensuring that they continue to thrive and evolve with each passing year.
SPJST’s mission to foster a sense of community and support its members in times of need is at the core of our identity. It’s heartwarming to see our lodges come together to organize these events, not only to celebrate our heritage but also to strengthen the bonds of friendship and solidarity among our members. These gatherings serve as a testament to the enduring spirit of unity that has defined our community for generations.
As we come together to celebrate Czech Heritage Month in Texas, let us reflect on the importance of preserving our cultural legacy and passing it on to future generations. Let us embrace this opportunity to connect with our roots, share stories with our fellow community members, and forge lasting memories that will keep our heritage alive for years to come.
Happy Czech Heritage Month to all! Na zdraví!

Proclamation
October 2023 as
Czech Heritage Month in SPJST
WHEREAS, Texans of Czech descent have made significant and lasting con-tributions to our state’s prosperity, heritage, culture; and
WHEREAS, beginning in the late 1840s Czech settlers came in growing numbers to the Lone Star State, gravitating to the rich soil of the black lands and upper coastal plains, these industrious pioneers created closeknit com-munities that kept intact their unique old-world customs while adapting to the challenges of a new land; and
WHEREAS, Czechs are renowned for their exemplary work ethics and love of democracy and have established standards of excellence as both private and public citizens to whom all can aspire; and because for generations, Texans of Czech ancestry have made many notable contributions, both cul-tural and historic, to the betterment of our state; and their many accom-plishments in this regard were deemed worthy of special legislative recogni-tion by the 76th Texas Legislature in 1999.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Executive Committee of SPJST, does hereby urge each and every member to recognize the contributions made to this Society and to Texas by Czech settlers and their descendants.
This proclamation is hereby submitted on September 22, 2023.

FROM STATE FRATERNAL DIRECTOR FRANK HORAK
October is finally here! Cooler weather, football, State Fair of Texas, and many other festivals and picnics happening throughout our state. In September, I attended Westfest and the Kolache Festival in Caldwell.
Even though it was hot, Westfest parade spectators turned out in droves to see the parade. Thank you, District Three Director John Engelke, Doug Galler of Lodge 66, Waco, and Mary Steinman of Lodge 154, Fort Worth for helping with the float. Thank you to our SPJST State Royalty and all the District Three members who rode on the SPJST Float. You were a big part of the excitement in West.
There were so many things to do and see at the Kolache Festival in Caldwell. Good food, arts and crafts, and kolaches.
Along with SPJST Controller Roy Vajdak, I experienced what being a judge does at the kolache baking contest. There were some great kolaches that youth, adults, and professionals had baked for the contest. Kolache judging was not easy, but they sure were delicious. Somehow I was able to judge my two favorites—poppyseed and prune kolaches! It was a fun day in Caldwell.
2023 Incentives Program
God’s 9-1-1
Desk Delisle L. Doherty SPJST Vice President of Sales and MarketingIt’s Your Life
The next couple of articles come from a book I have referenced before, “Daily Insights With Zig Ziglar.” It is an old book that stands the test of time.
Throughout the country every child, teenager, and adult is drilled to call 9-11 in times of trouble. Whether or not the problem is grave, or we don’t know the person who is in trouble, we dial the number. In an emergency of any kind, day or night, 9-1-1 is the number we call because it’s our connection to every emergency service in the city. In the same way, God has given us a 9-1-1 number to call no matter what our needs may be. We simply call on Him anytime, anywhere, for anything. He’s available to help.
We have confidence in our community’s fire department, police, and emergency personnel because we know they’ve been screened and trained, and we’ve heard about their exemplary service to other people. Similarly, we have confidence in God because He is God Most High, the Almighty King. “Most
High” is the name of God that most signifies His role as the sovereign ruler of the universe. Nothing escapes His notice, and nothing is beyond His wisdom to grasp. “Almighty” is the translation of the name El Shaddai, which means “all sufficient.” God’s power is beyond all other forces in the universe. He reigns supreme.
God is awesome in His power, but He is tender in His love. He invites us into the “sacred place” where we spend time with Him, and we live “under the shadow” of His gracious perfection.
“Be assured, if you walk with Him and look to Him and expect help from Him, He will never fail you.”

youth clubs. Please familiarize yourself with the guidelines necessary to qualify for the 2023 incentive. Any activity, such as meetings, outings, or social events, must be submitted by uploading the event sign-in form, photos of the activity, and fraternal hours through the spjst.org/gives webpage.
There are two informative videos available on the spjst.org/gives webpage that explain the reporting process. I highly recommend watching them. If you have further questions after viewing the videos, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
State and District Royalty
Congratulations to all state and district youth who emerged victorious in the royalty competition at the State Youth Showcase. You are encouraged to attend any festivals, socials, or lodge activities within your district while proudly wearing your tiara and sash. Feel free to assist the organizers where needed and ensure to have photos taken and submitted to the Vestnik. You serve as the representatives for the SPJST Youth Program.
Youth Club Attendance
Youth clubs no longer use quarterly reports for meeting attendance. Attendance is now collected by visiting spjst.org/gives webpage. Using the Youth Group Community Service Form, youth leaders should fill in the text boxes, upload photos of the event signin form(s), and include pictures of your youth group at the meeting, outing, or social gathering. This information will be used to track youth attendance for summer camp, scholarships, and other youth programs. Additionally, it will benefit your youth club’s fraternal hours each year.
All youth clubs are expected to hold face-to-face meetings. Online meetings where all members are using video conferencing tools like FaceTime or Zoom are not accepted for meeting attendance. Exceptions include situations where a member is unwell or when a member lives more than 50 miles from the meeting location.
2024 SPJST Youth Activities
Currently, we are in the process of compiling information to keep leaders and parents informed about the 2024 youth program. Following the SPJST Executive Committee’s strategic planning session in October, I will have more details to share. Please make note of a couple of important dates for your calendar:
The 2024 camp is Wednesday, June 19, through Sunday, June 23.
The Youth Showcase will be Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27 in Temple. The Youth Showcase Guidebook will remain largely unchanged, with minor adjustments in some of the categories.
Socks For Seniors
For October through December, we have our fourth quarter state charity project: Socks For Seniors. This initiative continues through December 31. SPJST lodges, youth clubs, and members are invited to participate. Identify a senior home, organization, or local shut-ins. Contact them for specific needs. Note that needs may range from socks, warm clothing, blankets, toiletry items, gifts, etc.
Photograph your donations with the donors. Submit your photo and information at spjst.org/gives and share on social media using #spjstgives.
Please be aware that some facilities may not permit visitors for health reasons. If this is the case, take your group photo outside by the facility’s sign or the front door.

Fraternally, Hannah Kovar, Reporter —SPJST—Lodge 18, Elgin Seeks Member Input: The Future of our SPJST Hall
Dear Members of Lodge 18, Elgin, We are at a crossroads, and we need your input. The SPJST hall in Elgin has played a significant role in our community since its establishment in 1976. It has been the backdrop for numerous cherished occasions, including benefits, school functions, weddings, graduations, and many more.
However, the sustainability of our hall is now in question. While some of our rentals cover their costs, our dances have not been profitable, making it increasingly difficult to attract live bands for entertainment due to low attendance. So, where do we go from here?
We believe the answer lies within our
membership. Your opinions matter, and we want to hear them. What do you envision for the future of our SPJST hall in Elgin? Should we focus on increasing rentals, and if so, how can we achieve this goal?
Our upcoming meeting on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall is an opportunity for you to voice your thoughts and ideas. After all, the hall belongs to the members, and your input will help shape its future.
Please join us in this important discussion and together, let's chart a path forward for our cherished SPJST hall in Elgin.
Sincerely,
Lodge 18, Elgin Officers and Trustees

Aaron Rigamonti, President —SPJST—Winnie Susan o f Lodge 81, Needville celebrates Centurian milestone
SPJST congratulates Winnifred (Winnie) Susan of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville - who celebrated her 100th birthday!
Winnie was born July 18, 1923, to parents Louis Bosak and Albina Ripple Bosak Kovar, who were both of Czech heritage. Winnie’s siblings include brother Leroy Bosak (Char lotte); brother Ladis Bosak (Lydia), and sister Darlene Blinka (Alvin) - all de ceased.
mother. They enjoyed raising all their own food with cattle, hogs, sheep, two big gardens each year, canning, and country cooking. For fun, they did much volunteering, dancing, and playing dominoes and bingo. They were happy to be at home and were not travelers. They were active members and volunteers with SPJST Lodge 81, Needville; RVOS; and St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church.
September 12,
Winnie married Edwin Susan on February 14, 1942, at age 18. They lived with Edwin’s mother, Frances (Kasparek) Susan, on the Susan Farm on Dannhaus Road. The couple was blessed with childrenKaren Rust of San Marcos and son Edwin “Sonny” Susan, Jr., who passed away in 1960.
Winnie attended Brown Community School and went through the seventh grade twice as she loved school so much. There was no high school in the area - only in Richmond. She did not have the resources to travel to Richmond, and there were no school buses back then. Winnie often mentions that she wanted to be a nurse, but did not have the opportunity for education. At age 14, she went to work as a caregiver/domestic for a local family to support herself. She has always had a loving, kind, caregiver heart.
Winnie enjoyed farming alongside husband Edwin, a full-time partner with the crops and animals, as a farm wife and
Edwin and Winnie were both of Czech heritage. Czech was spoken at home with Grandma, and Winnie continues to enjoy speaking it with her Czech friends.
After Edwin’s passing, Winnie lived on the farm alone for seven years until she moved into Needville in 2007. She enjoys being closer to friends and activities. While she has slowed down a bit the past few years, Winnie found the energy to get to church and to any and all social events where she might see an old friend or make a new one. She has a warm smile and a loving heart for everyone she meets. As a definite extrovert, Winnie has an amazing gift for making friends. She was active and had enjoyed a good mind until a stroke in February 2022, which affected her memory and eyesight.
Again, we congratulate Sister Winnie Susan on reaching this grand milestone. Thank you, Sister Susan, for your devotion to our SPJST Society. May God bless you and your family. —SPJST—

Lodge 88, Houston announces nominating committee
We would like to thank Janice Jahns, Michael Berry, and Dave Andrews for volunteering to serve as the Nominating Committe for 2023. As a reminder, I have included the language below from a previous letter which outlines the responsibilities of the Nominating Committee. The order of activities is just a suggestion, and they may change some aspects of how they complete the task.
That said, if you are interested in serving Lodge 88 in 2024 in one of the positions below, why not go ahead and reach out to the committee directly to save them the trouble. They can be reached at:
janicejahns@gmail.com michael.paul.berry@gmail.com dbandrews@gmail.com
Nominating Committee
To facilitate an active and engaged leadership team for Lodge 88, we have a Nominating Committee. By rule, this committee will present to membership a slate of individuals at the October meeting (one month before the annual meet-
ing) that they collectively nominate for each of the elected positions. To be clear, this is just a nomination. Others may still be nominated from the floor and actual elections will occur if there are alternate candidates.
The Nominating Committee may create that list of nominees how they see fit, but typically:
Check with current officers, chairs, and trustees to see who is still interested in serving in 2023.
Solicit other nominees from membership for any willing and qualified candidates. Individuals can self-nominate to the committee.
Where there are multiple candidates for a position, pick an official committee endorsed nominee.
Where there are gaps, actively find quality candidates.
Present the full slate of candidates at the October meeting.
Note: Members of the Nominating Committee are not precluded from being among the slate of nominated candidates.
Here are the lodge officers that are to be elected:

Allen’s aunt Margaret Bucek lit a candle in his remembrance. She also shared a brief history of his life.
President Macha resumed the meeting at 7:20 p.m. The June meeting minutes and treasurer’s report had been handed out to the members. After they had been reviewed, Frances Macha made a motion to accept them. The motion was seconded by Edith Molberg, and it passed.
Secretary Janie Bucek announced our lodge had one new member and had received two transfer requests to our lodge. The names of the individuals were announced.
Janie then gave the fraternal activities coordinator’s report.
David Bucek presented the cemetery report. He reported that he and his wife crafted three concrete slabs measuring two feet by four feet, placing them on the graves of unidentified individuals in Velehrad Cemetery. Dirt was covering the bricks around two of the graves. The bricks around the other grave were out of place.
Under new business, Edith Molberg made a motion to accept our new
member. The motion was seconded by Frances Macha, and it passed. We would like to welcome Collier Kaye Owens to Lodge 151.
Treasurer Carolyn Bucek made a motion to accept two members from Lodge 240, Bay City who requested transfers to our lodge. The motion was seconded by David Bucek, and it passed. We would like to welcome Kimberly A. Fields and Fannie Marshall to Lodge 151.
Edith Molberg made a motion to donate $100 to S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Center in Needville - Christmas activity fund; $100 to S.P.J.S.T Senior Living Center in Hillje - Christmas activity fund; $100 to Share in Wharton; and $100 to the Wharton Depot Museum’s model train display. LODGE 88, HOUSTON YOUTH SHARE ACTS OF KINDNESS
On Sunday, September 10, 2023, at Lodge 88, Houston, the youth meeting was dedicated to discussing various ways to perform random acts of kindness. They explored how a simple act of kindness can significantly brighten someone’s day. The young members brainstormed ideas ranging from greeting strangers with a friendly smile to sharing a heartfelt hug with a family member. Following this thoughtful discussion, the youth were pro-
vided with crafting supplies to create cards, flowers, bracelets, and necklaces for individuals they had never met. These handcrafted items were then generously offered as door prizes during the lodge’s monthly adult member meeting that followed. While the youth had a blast crafting these gifts, the adults found equal enjoyment, if not more, in receiving them at the conclusion of their meeting.
—Sarah Itz, Youth LeaderVictoria Community Center. Last, she stated SPJST is doing well financially.
District Five Director Bradley Stavinoha gave us a report about the lodges in District Five. He announced the credited rate for a 1-Year annuity is 5.25 percent. A $10,000 minimum deposit is required.
Sales Agent Mary Jo Salinas reported she is working on orphan accounts. She stated she will be attending a sales agents’ training session.
Lodge 151 members participated in the Back-to-School Supply Drive. The school supplies will be donated to Sivells Elementary School in Wharton.
Our July, August, and September birthday honorees were Director Vahalik and Frances Macha. Each birthday honoree received a gift from the lodge.
Door prizes were drawn.

I enjoyed riding on the float and being involved in so much of our Czech heritage. I got to enjoy a yummy sausage and sauerkraut sandwich from the SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood booth.
If you guys have never been to Westfest, I do recommend you give it a try. Though I don’t think I ever ate that many different types of foods or sweat that much, it was still fun to experience.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth ready for Halloween candy, fall activities
It is now September. I cannot wait till Halloween. I ate up all of my candy and now don’t have any candy. All I have is suckers. On Halloween, I get to get more candy. We put up our Halloween decorations on Labor Day weekend.
I’m so excited that football season
has started again. I went to the Wildcats game on Friday, and they lost terribly. You see, I live in Temple and the high school’s mascot is the wildcat. I can’t believe the Wildcats lost.
I can’t wait for the soccer season to start up. I’m sorry, I meant professional soccer season start up. I just played my first soccer game on Saturday. I lost 0 to 7. It was a big upset. Luckily, it was a preseason scrimmage. Texas A&M also played Miami this weekend. They lost, too. I don’t know what the score was,
but believe me, I promise they lost. I hope the Cowboys don’t lose as well. They play their first game tonight.
I miss summer vacation. I like being able to sleep in every day. I like not having to learn. I like to play video games every single day. At least I have nice teachers this year. I have made new friends, too. My favorite subject this year is math. Now I have to say bye. Fraternally, Andrew Ordogne, age 8 —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton youth begins middle school
Dear Vestnik Readers, I have started middle school this year. I go to Travis Middle School, and my name is Travis. That’s pretty cool! Middle school is very different from elementary school. You get more freedoms, and you get to move classes. You also get your own Chromebook to take care of. I’m enjoying it much more than elementary school.
It is unbelievable that it is already September. This year has just flown by. It is about to be fall so hopefully it will bring cooler temps and more rain.
A lot of fun things are coming up. We get to go to Castell, Texas, with my grandparents, uncle, and aunt. Our dogs get to go, too. I know it will be a lot of fun. Hopefully, the river will have some water in it and the fish will be biting.
Halloween is also coming up soon. I hope I get good candy. My friend and I are planning on going trick-or-treating together. This year, I hope I don’t get a lot of gummy candy since I have braces and I am not able to eat it.
We had our youth meeting last weekend. We talked about kindness and did a kindness bingo.
Stay cool from that hot, hot heat.

I was able to become a district and State Duchess with SPJST, which not only enriched my life but also led me to volunteer in

my community at various events.
Our community involvement began with volunteering to walk dogs at our local animal shelter once a month on weekends, assisting the Texas Critter Crusaders. We also participated in local parades, walking with the dogs, and recently, we contributed to their fundraiser by donating essentials like blankets, beds, food, and toys. I also encouraged my two young cousins to join the youth club and attend monthly meetings. I showed them the ropes during our meetings and conveyed the importance and joy of volunteering in our community. So when they joined me at the food pantry and assisted with our local animal shelter, it was a promising start for them.
Unfortunately, we’ve had to stop walking the dogs lately because some of them were too big for my younger cousins to handle due to their age. However, we continue to support the shelter by providing monetary donations or requested items. We’ve also assisted the animal shelter with their Paws for a Cause event.
Another avenue where I’ve been actively volunteering is our local food pantry. Every quarter, we help by bagging

My cousins were initially apprehensive about it, but once they were assigned to the dessert table, they enjoyed selecting desserts for those who drove up. They always ask if I’ll be there, and it’s heartwarming to see their enthusiasm.
These are just a few ways in which we’ve made a positive impact on our community through our SPJST membership. I also volunteer with my mom’s church group, assisting with fundraisers, managing food lines, and helping decorate for raffle fundraisers. Her church group collaborates with the Catholic School I attended, participating in their annual fundraiser, which allows me to give back to the school that played a significant role in my growth and learning.
My mom also introduced us to some of her friends who needed help with a local barbecue cook-off. Initially, I couldn’t assist, but they eventually allowed me to participate as long as my mom was present. They saw how well I followed instructions and entrusted me with responsibilities. I started by helping at the judging table, delivering plates, and then progressed to assisting with the tally selection. I genuinely look forward to being part of this local community event.
Through this group, I had the opportunity to meet and get to know important people in my community, and I believe much of this was made possible because of my involvement with SPJST.
This year, my school counselor invited me to be part of the “Welcome Camp” at our school before the start of the school year. As a junior, I could pro-
vide incoming students with insights and get to know them better. I’ve also shared with them how much fun it is to attend district outings. For instance, I encouraged my cousin Della to join us for a day at Six Flags. We spent the whole day together, enjoying rides like the Tony Hawk and the Bugs Bunny water ride. We met up with the district group, took pictures with everyone, and reintroduced her to some of the other youth members.
Over the years, my cousins have observed my sister and me actively participating in the SPJST youth club, dancing beseda, engaging in YAD, and running for royalty. Last year, my cousins were able to participate fully in YAD and performed admirably. My cousin Tatiana
This is how SPJST has empowered me to make the world a better place over the past 11 years. I’m thankful for the opportunity to involve my cousins and family in these meaningful endeavors. Little League World series: Needville and Czechia athletes visit SPJST Lodge 81, Needville shared this post recently on its Facebook page of the Brno, Czechia team (in blue) with the Needville team at the Little League World Series being held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
The musical festivities continue at the Muziky, Muziky event from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater. Always a popular part of the Heritage Fest, this year’s Legends Series presents a show that is sure to evoke nostalgia. The grand finale for 2023 will be the Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys Tribute Show, celebrating 90 years! When Texas Playboys frontman Jason Roberts takes the stage with his fiddle and utters his first “Ah-ha” of the evening, westernswing fans know they’re witnessing the living embodiment of a tradition dating back to 1933. That was the year when the charismatic fiddler Bob Wills, along with several other musicians in a group called the Light Crust Doughboys, broke away from Fort Worth’s Burris Mills and its autocratic business manager, W. Lee “Pappy” O’Daniel, to form their own band. As Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, they became one of the most pop-
ular touring and recording acts in the nation, offering audiences the highly danceable musical mixture that came to be known as western swing.
Presale tickets for the Amphitheater Show are $20 and are available at the TCHCC Office in La Grange and online at Eventbrite.com from September 1 until Thursday, October 19. Gate admission is $25. To conclude the evening with a bang, a massive HEB Fireworks Finale above the Amphitheater (weather permitting) is in store.
In addition to the fantastic music, you’re invited to explore the Czech Village, a recreated village from the early 1900s, complete with residential houses, barns, and stores. Demonstrations of early immigrant life will take place throughout the grounds all day, including working in the Zapalac Saw Mill, operating the Czech Newspaper Museum press and engine, blacksmithing, corn shelling and grinding, hay pressing, and the production of textiles, soap, noodles, sausage, honey, and more. Children’s activities will be available, courtesy of the Leo’s Club (train ride), KJZT (pumpkin painting), RVOS, and many other activities for everyone to enjoy. The famous SPJST Kolace Eating Contest and the RVOS Beer Tasting Competition are among the favorites.
An antique farm equipment show sponsored by the South Texas Wheel Spinners and Crank Twisters Club, along with an antique/classic car show by H&H Automotive, Schulenburg, will be spread throughout the Czech Village. The Janak Barn and Texas Czech Agricultural Museum displays farm practices and implements from the late 1800s to 1940. There will also be mule-drawn wagon rides around the grounds all day. Don’t forget to visit the country store and vendors for some great deals, including fresh, stone-ground cornmeal for cooking.
The Czech Village houses two music museums. The Czech Music Museum of Texas, located in the Kalich House, features four genres of Czech music – classical, folk, polka, and liturgical. The Polka Lover’s Club of Texas Museum, located in the Hoelsher House & Huebner Center, showcases Texas polka bands, as well as memorabilia and photos of the Polka Lover’s Club of America, Texas Chapter.
Inside the TCHCC Main Center, make sure to visit the Kopecky Gift Shop to browse the brand-new stock of authentic Czech items, T-shirts, caps, crystal,
periodicals, music CDs, and new Christmas decorations for 2023. The Hanslik Hall will host the annual KJT State Taroky Championship. Swing by to learn this fun card game. The Czech Heritage Society of Texas and US Queens will have displays and are eager to share more about their role in Czech heritage.
Enjoy the current featured exhibits at the center: “Neighbors Helping Neighbors for Prosperity” in the Museum and the updated Military and Glass Exhibits in the Library. If you’ve ever wondered about your Czech roots, the spacious Melnar Library will offer assistance with genealogy research.
There’s plenty to do for the entire family! Come and experience all the fun and variety you could imagine at the Heritage Fest and Muziky!

Texas, Illinois, and California stood out as the states where the majority of individuals laid claim to their Czech heritage.
Written by ČTKPublished on September 22, 2023
In a 2020 census, a staggering 1.4 million individuals in the United States identified themselves as having Czech roots or heritage, as reported by the Federal Census Bureau, the entity responsible for conducting the census.
Among the various white ethnic groups, Czech identity emerged as the 16th-most frequently cited. Texas, Illinois, and California stood out as the states where the majority of individuals laid claim to their Czech heritage.
In the 2020 U.S. Census, respondents who specified their race also had the opportunity to delineate their ethnic background or community, and they could choose more than one if applicable. This
marked the first time individuals could provide detailed responses about their race and ethnicity, as highlighted by NPR.
Czechs in the U.S.
U Pinkasů pub, founded by Jakub Pinkas in 1843, was the first Prague pub to serve the bottom-fermented lager Pilsner Urquell on tap. It has remained one of the city’s most popular establishments throughout its more than 180 years of continuous operation.
U Pinkasů pub and restaurant is located in the centre of Prague on Jungmann Square, in the neighbourhood of the Franciscan Monastery and the Church of Our Lady of the Snows. Its
bottom-fermented frothy lager, Pinkas expanded the rooms on the ground floor of the pub, and opened up the cool medieval cellar suitable for storing beer. And he introduced a new practice. At that time, beer was poured from big casks into smaller containers. But in Pinkas’ cellar, the beer wasn't poured, it was tapped. In other words, each glass of beer was drawn directly from the cask. This novelty, which quickly attracted more beer-lovers, was nonetheless an ordeal for the staff. No one has ever counted how many pints a waiter had to carry from the barrel cellar up the stairs to the pub inthe course of one shift. They say there were waiters who would carry as many as 15 glasses at a time.
Several towns and neighborhoods have Czech-inspired names, reflecting their Bohemian roots. These include Prague, Oklahoma, and Prague, Nebraska, both settled by Czech immigrants in the late 19th century. New Prague, Minnesota, attracted Czech immigrants and was originally known as Prague before adopting its current name. Praha, Texas, hosts an annual Czech-Texan homecoming event. Pilsen, Kansas, was settled by Bohemian families in 1874 and still retains its Czech heritage. Additionally, Chicago has Pilsen and East Pilsen neighborhoods, reflecting changing immigrant populations over time.
The Census Bureau documented around 300 distinct ethnic communities and recognized 1,200 tribes or other origin designations among Native American people.
A total of 1.4 million respondents proudly asserted their Czech heritage, either individually or in conjunction with other identities.
Texas Czech
Hungary, Portugal, and Denmark reported similar numbers in the census. Within the white category, the most prevalent ancestries were English (46.6 million people), German (almost 45 million people), and Irish (38.6 million people).
Outside of the European spectrum, Mexicans constituted the largest nonEuropean ethnic group, with nearly 36 million individuals acknowledging Mexican ancestry.
Following closely, African Americans comprised the next largest demographic, with 24.6 million people indicating their identity on the census forms.
The Census Bureau reported an astounding 350 million responses regarding race and ethnic group membership, which stands in stark contrast to the 2010 census, receiving six times fewer responses. It’s important to note that disparities in data collection methods between the 2010 and 2020 censuses make them not entirely comparable.
Based on the 2020 census, the U.S. was home to approximately 331 million individuals in the year 2020.
For
first owner was Jakub Pinkas (18051879), originally a tailor. In the spring of 1843, Jakub Pinkas asked Pilsen coachman Martin Salzmann, who sometimes stayed with him when he came to Prague with goods from Pilsen (later founder of the most famous Pilsner beer hall U Salzmannů), to bring him the new lager from Pilsen to taste. On April 8, 1843, Salzmann brought two buckets of the tasty lager from the new brewery in Pilsen for him to sample. Jakub Pinkas left the tailoring trade and established the now famous pub.
With the growing popularity of the
Pinkas was a strict innkeeper, but his regulars were his protégés. They included famous politicians, writers and journalists such as František Palacký and František Ladislav Rieger who had their own tables. And Pinkas was always happy to welcome young students from Prague schools to his pub. The old pipe, on which the first Pilsner was drafted, is still on display in the cellar of the famous pub.

Prague
Myths and Legends
Not all things are as they seem to be. Streets paved with cobblestones, long shadows stretching from glowing lanterns, the wind playing with the colored leaves and the dark outlines of the Gothic cathedrals. This is magical Prague, a city shrouded in countless myths and legends from its thousand years of history. Set out on the trail of its mythical inhabitants and creatures to unusual places, which go to make up the unique character of this city on the banks of the Vltava.
Libuse and the Founding of Prague
Libuse was a legendary woman who ruled the Czech people back in the day. She had quite a unique ruling style, basing a lot of decisions on prophecies. For example, when she was pressured into marriage, she didn’t select any old prince. And she could hardly consult
the personals. Instead, she insisted on marrying a man in her vision. He was a ploughman, named Premysl, who would be found in the fields near the village Stadice. Now, that is picky.
Her decision to found Prague was based on the same mystical approach. Libuše had a vision a city “whose fame would reach to the stars.” She said the place would be near the river Vltava about 30 hons (4.5 kms) from where they were. Having trusted her method of selecting a husband, the people went to where she said and found a man making a threshold for a house. Threshold in Czech is prah, hence Praha. The site is what we now know as Vysehrad.

Celebrate the rich, cultural heritage of American Czechs and the many contributions they have made to America during Czech Heritage Month. The Vestnik invites you to participate in its Czech Heritage Month activities. This week’s activity doubles as SPJST’s Caring Challenge for October; but everyone is welcome to complete the activity and send in! Czech-themed items will be awarded in a drawing from all entries received.
Josef Lada was born on December 17, 1887, in Hrusice.
Lada was sent to Prague to be an apprentice binder, but art was his passion, and he loved to paint and draw.
Entirely self-taught, Lada created his own style as a newspaper caricaturist, and later, as an illustrator. He also wrote and illustrated The Adventures of Mikes, a little black cat who could talk.
Lada is best known as the illustrator of Jaroslav Hasek’s WWI novel The Good Soldier Svejk.
Here in America, many people associate Lada with his wonderful Christmas paint-
ings, many of which have been appearing on Czech Christmas cards for generations. Typical images include large families in simple, but cozy rooms; men smoking pipes while rosy-faced children marvel at Nativity scenes, carolers, and children building snowmen or sledding.
Over five decades since Lada’s death, his illustrations remain because people can relate to them. His works are so perfectly done that people find something in them - a bit of their own childhood.
Lada died December 14, 1957, and is buried at Olsany Cemetery in Prague. https://praguemylove.blogspot.com/2010/12/
