WHAT ’S IN A NAME?

Camp Kubena and J.R. Kubena

Proudly serving as the executive director of Camp Kubena for the past five years, I awaken each morning in the heart of Fayette County, Texas, sur rounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Post Oak Savanna.

The serene landscape, adorned with foggy mornings and vibrant springtime wildflowers, transports me to a bygone era—an era devoid of internet and social media, where communities thrived on face-to-face interactions at local halls. As I reflect on the past, my mind wanders to the origin of our camp’s name: Camp Kubena. For those who have had the privilege of visiting, you’ve likely heard me strumming our theme song, “I been thinking a lot about Camp Kubena, where the oak trees grow real tall.” This song not only encapsulates the spirit of our camp but also serves as a bridge to the past, evoking a time when the com-

munity gathered to connect and socialize. In this article, I aim to delve into the significance of the name Kubena within SPJST and Fayette County community, sharing insights into the history of John Rudolph Kubena—the individual behind the name that defines our beloved Camp Kubena.

J.R. Kubena was born on June 10, 1868, in the little Town of Lichnov, Moravia, Czechoslovakia (now Czechia), where many generations of his family worked on farms, raised cattle, and grew a variety of crops. J.R.’s parents worked the lands of Lichnov until J.R.’s father decided it was time to move his family to Texas. With civil unrest growing throughout the European countries, and stories of land available along the Colorado River in Texas, the thought of a fresh start must have sounded good. J.R.’s father was also the only sibling in his family to emigrate to the United States. I can only imagine how big this decision must have been.

“Inspired Faith 365 Days a Year”

The next couple articles will be from one of my devotional books. This is the time of year all our sinful debt is paid in full. I hope these will inspire you as much as they inspire me.

Along with many others, the Litt family suffered lean times during the Great Depression. In order to keep food

on the table, Mr. Litt opened a charge account with the neighborhood grocer. Having an unpaid grocery bill pained and worried the proud father.

When she turned 16, Katherine Litt went to work at the five and dime store to help with family expenses. And out of admiration for the many sacrifices he had made, she also wanted to give her dad a great birthday present, something he hadn’t received in several years.

After receiving her first paycheck, she burst through the front door in excitement and handed her father a carefully wrapped present. He couldn’t hide his

tears when he found inside a neat stack of receipts from the grocery store, all marked “paid in full.”

During times of trouble, it’s tempting to draw inward in fearful selfishness. But when we react to difficulties with unselfish acts, we make life beautiful–for ourselves and for others, even in the worst of time.

“God paid our debt in full with the sacrifice of His son Jesus Christ.”

An Open Letter to District Five Delegates

2024 is a very important year for SPJST – it’s a Convention year. The delegates have a very important role in deciding the direction that SPJST is going to move to in the future.

One very important responsibility the delegates have is selecting the district’s representative to the Board of Directors. The members of the Board of Directors are the people who:

• Hire and oversee the President/CEO.

• Review and implement the plans for the actions of the company.

• Are responsible for setting goals for achieving the best results from the plans, and

• Make changes in the plans from time to time.

The basic qualifications for a director are laid out in the by-laws, and each candidate is vetted to make sure they are qualified. This is just a part of what a director needs to know.

It is important that the candidate has a good understanding of how business works. Acquiring this knowledge comes in many forms:

• Formal classroom training

• Experience from in-house manage-

ment training

• Working for other companies

• Owning and operating a business

• Specific knowledge of the life insurance business

Life insurance is very different from other insurances, in that it protects your family in a very personal way. It provides money for your family at the most difficult time of life, and allows them to make tough decisions, without the worry of finances. It allows for the building of family wealth or for extra monies in retirement or for emergencies. It can provide the monies needed to help educate children, pay off debts, and many other things for your family.

Think about why you bought your life insurance and compare it to your reasons for car or home insurance. Building this understanding on life insurance can be greatly enhanced by having experience working with other major life insurance companies, learning how they market, present, and communicate how life insurance can meet the needs of the community.

A director invests a lot of time with the members, the lodges, and the entire district. Spreading oneself thin with other organizations, even though they are wonderful groups, takes away from the time that should be invested in SPJST needs and requirements. Time invested in growing SPJST’s name into the communities around the lodges and helping band the lodges in the district into a cooperative unit better improves the SPJST mission of “insuring and enriching lives.”

Selection of a director must be more than a popularity contest, or the extension of a “blood line.” Any farmer or rancher will tell you genetics are no guarantee you are going to get the end product you are hoping for. The selection of a director to the board of directors has to be based on the totality of that person’s education, knowledge, and ex-

perience in the life insurance industry, and business as a whole. For SPJST to continue to move forward, new ideas need to be introduced and are often very necessary when seeking the best person for the job.

Fraternally,

Don Fruin

Hop on these tips for a great Easter egg hunt

Egg hunts are a traditional component of many people’s Easter celebrations. Children often delight in searching for eggs around the house or in the backyard. Egg hunts are so popular that they have become a component of many town-sponsored festivities. In fact, the White House hosts its annual Easter Egg Roll each year.

There are many ways to make Easter egg hunts more enjoyable and productive for participants of all ages. Try these “eggcellent” ideas.

Designate a clear hunting area.

Young children can grow frustrated searching for eggs in large areas. Set parameters for the search area that are manageable depending on the ages of the children participating. If you’ll be in a large yard or field, tape off the search area perimeter.

Vary the prizes.

Candy, candy and more candy seems to be the name of the game on Easter. But too many sweets can lead to stomach aches for young Easter celebrants. Instead, mix and match the prizes contained in the eggs. Candy can be in some, money in others, and perhaps small toys in a few eggs. Another clever idea is to mix the egg hunt with cha-

rades. Put charade prompts in some eggs so that kids have to act out what they read inside for added fun.

Special privilege egg.

Hide one egg that gives the finder the opportunity for a special honor. It may include getting the first slice of the holiday ham or being able to choose a movie that the entire family watches together after dinner.

Label eggs for equity.

When there are children across a wide range of ages, label the eggs with the children’s names or utilize a colorcoded system to ensure that everyone has an equal shot at finding eggs.

Keep a master list.

It can be hard to remember where each egg is hidden, so keep a running list of where they are or take photos with a phone of the hiding spots. This way you're not left to discover a chocolatefilled egg teeming with ants come summertime.

Interesting Facts about the month of March

March marks a turning point for many people each year. Perhaps because winter winds down and officially ends in midMarch, the month is easy to characterize as a turning point toward spring and all that entails, including warmer weather and additional hours of daylight. The vernal equinox is one of many interesting facts about the third month of the year.

1. March might mark the official return of spring, but the inspiration for its name is far less serene. According to Almanac.com, March is named for Mars, the Roman god of war. That might not jibe with modern impressions of March, but it makes sense from a historical perspective. That’s because military campaigns were once routinely suspended during the cold winter months. Upon the return of spring and the more favorable conditions it produced, military campaigns would start up again, thus making March an aptly named month.

Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point officers enjoyed the February 10, 2024, Lunch & Learn held at SPJST Home Office in Temple. Pictured are, left to right, President Ingrid Petrik, FAC Susan Hutton, Vice President Frances McBride, and Secretary/Treasurer David Nauert.

2. Though presidential inaugurations in the United States are now held in January, that wasn’t always the case. In fact, March 4 was the official Inauguration Day until 1933, when the Twentieth Amendment was ratified and inaugurations were officially moved to January. Even George Washington, the first man to serve as President of the United States of America, was initially slated to be inaugurated on March 4. However, the Library of Congress notes that electoral ballots could not be counted as quickly as Congress anticipated, so the first inauguration was delayed until April 30, 1789. President Franklin D. Roosevelt holds the distinction of being the first American president to be inaugurated in

January after he was sworn in on January 20, 1937.

3. March hosts one of the most beloved holidays across the globe, even though the day commemorates the patron saint of a small country in western Europe. St. Patrick is the primary patron saint of Ireland, a small island nation in the North Atlantic Ocean with a population of roughly seven million people. Despite that, World Population Review reports that St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in more than 200 countries each year on March 17. The New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade is world-renowned, but the holiday is celebrated in other countries one might not immediately associate with Ireland and St. Patrick, such as Singapore, Russia and Japan.

4. College sports fans anxiously anticipate the arrival of March each year. That’s because the month marks the return of March Madness, a college basketball tradition that annually draws millions of fans to watch and/or attend games in the weeks long single-elimination NCAA Tournament that culminates with the national championship game. The origins of the phrase “March Madness” are not precisely known, though many historians trace the phrase to high school basketball in Indiana in the 1930s. Legendary broadcaster Brent Musburger is credited with associating the term with the NCAA Tournament in the 1980s. (MS)

WHAT ’S IN A NAME? Camp Kubena and J.R. Kubena

Continued from page 1.

In 1882, J.R.’s father packed up his family and went to Bremen, Germany, almost 1,000 miles away to board the SS Elbe. For reference, that is like traveling from Temple, Texas, to Chicago, Illinois, in 1868. When they arrived in Bremen, they booked passage aboard a large transatlantic ocean liner called SS Elbe. The SS Elbe was a 416-foot ship with four masts and a three-cylinder coal fired steam engine with one propeller. The ship was only one year old and was very popular for immigrants headed to the United States. She would average about 12 knots (about 14 mph) which was fast for 1882 and had room for 796 in steerage (very rough accommodations). They were at sea for about 16 days before arriving in New York on March 16, 1882. The Kubena family knew they were going to Texas and headed west as soon at they could. It would be another journey of 1,700 miles before they arrived at the promised land of central Texas where the wildflowers fill your soul.

When the Kubena family finally arrived in central Texas, J.R.’s father purchased a beautiful property just outside of Fayetteville. J.R. and his siblings started public schools where they would begin learning English. J.R continued his schooling for two winter terms, and worked on his father’s farm until he turned 22.

In 1890, J.R. was presented with the opportunity to move down the road to La Grange and begin his mercantile experience with C.J. Von Rosenberg as a clerk. It was during his time in La Grange he met Miss Julia Sladek, and on January 21, 1896, he married her. J.R. worked at Von Rosenberg until the spring of 1896, when he moved back to Fayetteville and built a beautiful 1,500 square foot home for his new family. That home still stands today on 209 West Market Street in Fayetteville. It is currently a fantastic bed and breakfast.

In 1897, J.R. Kubena was involved with his local community of Fayette County and was learning about fraternal organizations such as Woodman of the World

and Sons of Hermann. On July 1, 1897, he and others worked together to form a new fraternal organization called Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas or SPJST. Our beloved organization began with 866 members and 25 charter lodges. SPJST officially received its state charter on August 12, 1897. J.R was passionate about SPJST, was elected to the position of secretary, and helped grow the membership to 15,000 with assets of $3,500,000. J.R. was an active figure in the SPJST organization for his entire life.

In 1898, J.R.’s father, John Kubena, passed away in Fayetteville at the age of 60. His father’s career in America was passed as a farmer and settling among his Bohemian countrymen in Central Texas. I don’t know how J.R. and his father really felt about each other, but I believe that he must have been proud of his son.

After leaving Von Rosenberg in the spring of 1896. J.R. worked for a local merchant named Mr. Knesek. He only worked for him for about a year before accepting a clerk position in Moulton for a different merchant named Ed Boehn. On March 1, 1899, J.R. and Mr. Knesek connected back up and created the partnership of Kubena & Knesek, The General Store in Fayetteville. This store is still located on the corner of East Fayette Street and North Live Oak Street and originally had a dance hall on top. One of J.R.’s sons operated a Ford dealership at this location, and it was

the SPJST business office until the organization moved to Temple in about 1950. After SPJST moved out, it was Kubena Cafe. Multiple businesses have come and gone over the years, but the building is now home to The Vintage Rose Market and several other retail businesses. I recommend visiting Fayetteville, Texas.

In 1900, J.R. was elected and served one term as mayor of Fayetteville and began to be more involved in county and state governance. Then on January 13, 1903, he became a Texas State Representative of Fayette, Bastrop, and Gonzales counties of District 58 for three terms. He served through the Lanham administration and two years under Governor Campbell. He retired in 1908 but took an appointment by Governor Colquitt to an official position at the State Insane Asylum in Austin. J.R. later resigned from that office in 1915 to become a board member of the Agricultural and Mechanical College, by the appointment of Governor Ferguson.

Sadly, JR Kubena died on May 4, 1938, in Galveston. He was hit by a car while crossing the street in Galveston. He was 70 years old and in Galveston on official SPJST business. The driver of the car was charged with negligent homicide. While this is sad, J.R. Kubena was doing what he loved most, fraternalism or benefiting a brother with SPJST. J.R. and his wife, Julia, had nine children, and the Kubena name is still strong in Texas.

In drawing inspiration and guidance, we can turn to the legacy of J.R. Kubena, whose name stands as a beacon, symbolizing the profound brotherhood and our deep-rooted connection to the rich history embedded in the fabric of Camp Kubena.

Resolution of Sympathy

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, New Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, GERALDINE RUTH LINDEMAN.

On Monday, December 29, 2023, Geraldine gracefully departed this earthly realm to embrace eternal peace alongside our Lord and Savior, enveloped by the love of her devoted family.

To honor her life, visitation was held Friday, January 19, 2024 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell. A mass dedicated to Geraldine's memory was held on January 20 St. Mary Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, led by Reverend Melvin Dornak.

Geraldine Ruth Lindeman was born Geraldine Ruth Miller on January 20, 1944, to Louis Fritz Miller and Alma Cora Schulz in Cameron, Texas, embodied the essence of devotion as a wife, a nurturing mother, a loving grandmother, a cherished great-grandmother, and a dear friend. Her kindness, generosity, and steadfast faith radiated beyond measure, leaving an enduring imprint on the community of Caldwell and beyond.

In 1962, Geraldine graduated from C.H. Yoe High School, embarking on a life journey marked by love and resilience. Her path intertwined with that of Milton Franklin Charanza, whom she married on Christmas Eve in 1962. Two beautiful children - Steven Milton Charanza and Angela Kay Charanzablessed their union.

Geraldine worked at Nagel Coat Hanger Company and Burleson County Tax Assessor-Collector's Office for many years.

She found joy in holiday cooking, created cherished memories with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, lent her voice in church choirs, and was interested in genealogy alongside her sister, granddaughters, nieces, and friends. As a member of the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS), she was honored as the Member of the Year. Resolution of Sympathy

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, New Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, WAYNE WOLZ, who passed away Monday, May 22, 2023. A memorial service was held on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at 2 p.m., at Caldwell Methodist Church. Wayne was a local rancher, former NASA engineer, loving father and husband, and friend to many.

VĚSTNÍK Monday, March 11, 2024 21
Alton Machan Albert Scasta Marcela Vaculik Wayne Wolz

Wayne was born in Corpus Christi on July 7, 1945 and lived his early years in Houston. Each summer was spent on his grandparents’ farm in Deanville, where he learned all the chores of farm and ranch life at his grandfather’s side. By the age of eight he was already driving the tractor and trucks. When he was in the fourth grade, the family moved to Caldwell where he started working in their “Ben Franklin” store. He formed many deep friendships at school and graduated from Caldwell High in 1963. Over the decades he and his classmates would meet two to three times a year for reunions.

Mr. Wolz attended the University of Houston, graduating with an Industrial Engineering degree, and was hired by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He was present in Florida for the Apollo 15 rocket launch. He worked in the same building as the Apollo astronauts and knew them all. After his retirement he planned yearly trips for his NASA ACE group to get together and reminisce about their working days during the Apollo moon missions.

In 1968, Wayne married Mary Leigh Sheffield. He was a loving and dedicated father to their children Jenness and Ben. He fully enjoyed every minute of being a parent and volunteered in many organizations, investing in his kids and community. He was a Chief of the Indian Princesses and Indian Guides. He was a Scout Master of the Cub Scouts and a baseball coach, too. Mr. Wolz had a lifelong passion for cars. He rebuilt and loved to drive MGs prior to having children. Wayne and Mary visited many automobile shows over the years. He taught his son how to work on cars, imparting the skills of being a good handyman and excellent troubleshooter. Ben will miss talking with his dad about ideas on how to fix just about anything.

Upon his early retirement from NASA at the age of 47, he moved his family to the Wolz acreage in Deanville. His children graduated from Caldwell schools, the same as he did. Both are grateful that they built a connection to Burleson County and call it their forever home.

Wayne and Mary formed a business, “Mary’s Patterns,” that kept them very busy for 25 years, traveling to quilt shows across the U.S. and accomplishing the feat of visiting all 50 states.

As a member of the Caldwell Methodist Church, Wayne sang for 35 years in the choir. He belonged to Methodist Men, volunteered at the Christian Care Store, and led the senior group, taking

them on day trips each month. He helped establish, and was the first Board President for, the Deanville Heritage Foundation. Wayne enjoyed playing dominoes with friends for many years. He was also a competitive bridge player and competed on behalf of Burleson County at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo several times in the 2000s.

Wayne spent his final years ranching, visiting friends over lunch at the Surrey Inn, Pizza Hut, and auction barn, and driving around his beloved family land.

Wayne was preceded in death by sister Karen Zgabay; mother Isabelle Devlin; and father Lanceer Wolz.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Wolz; brothers Bill and Bobbie Serafine; daughter and son-inlaw Jenness and Dan Pooley; son and daughter-in-law Ben and Shelly Wolz; grandkids Wesley Bivins, Austin Bivins, Andrew Wolz, Travis Wolz, Evelyn Pooley, Abbigale Brysch; and greatgrandkids Sam, Hazel, Colt, and Raelynn.

Solar Eclipse

Howdy Party April 4 at SPJST Home Office

The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center’s popular “Night at the Museum” series returns to Temple for its second season in 2024, commencing with the “Solar Eclipse Howdy Party” on Thursday, April 4. The event will be held at the SPJST Home Office located at 520 North Main Street from 5:30 until 8 p.m.

“A complete solar eclipse is a rare occurrence and for many of us will be a once-in-a-lifetime, awe-inspiring experience,” says SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek. “Taking this to heart, the SPJST Foundation, which is coordinating the party, wanted to make this a community event that is both fun and educational. That’s where we got the idea of throwing the ‘Solar Eclipse Howdy Party’!”

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on the Earth’s surface. It’s a heavenly spectacle that has fascinated humans for centuries, with the earliest recorded solar eclipse dating back to 2137 BC in ancient China.

So, what does the solar eclipse have to do with Czech history? “That’s easy,” says Vanicek. “All of us – regardless of where our ancestors came from share a common interest in the world in which we live. The April 8 eclipse belongs to all of us! The Solar Eclipse Howdy Party is a chance for everyone to get ready before the main event arrives on Monday, April 8!”

Howdy Party attendees will enjoy a mix of country-western and polka music from 6 until 7:30 p.m. by the trio of Jerry Haisler and Friends. The “Crash Course in Eclipse Education” follows at 7:30 p.m. by the Reverend Harold Vanicek, Jr. of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Marble Falls.

space engineering, Harold’s early career was devoted to working on the Space Shuttle Program in Houston and exploring uncharted frontiers in high energy physics in Austin. Over time, God kept knocking on Pastor Harold’s door with the calling to a different vocation. He answered that knock and attended Wartburg Seminary in Iowa. Today, Pastor Harold’s ministry blends his roles of pastor and engineer. A children’s sermon includes a lesson on earth’s magnetic field and how it reminds us that God’s unseen presence affects our everyday lives.

“We’re excited about the Night at the Museum’s second season,” says SPJST President/CEO Vanicek. “Everyone, I believe, wants to be a part of something that can bring positivity to their lives and benefit the community.

“This is a program that brings the community together. It’s a once-amonth opportunity that allows us to congregate, to celebrate, to educate, and experience something bigger than just ourselves,” says Vanicek.
